June is a time of endings and beginnings. School adjourns for the summer, and the much warmer days signal the exciting onset of vacations, camps, and more outings at the pool and beach. We also celebrate Father’s Day in June. I lost my dad in 2013, but I still think about him every day. Although he is gone, I am fortunate that he left me with so many wonderful memories. After my mother passed away, he moved closer to me and my children, and I began to get to know him in a new way, from an adult perspective. When his dementia set in, I became his caretaker, and although those were challenging days, I feel fortunate that we had that time together. I got to see his true personality, his incredibly outgoing nature and wonderful sense of humor. The experience helped me move forward with a new appreciation for just how precious every single day is. Don’t wait until Father’s Day to let those important men in your life know how special they are to you. On a much lighter note, June is also a good time to look around your home to see what may be in need of some attention, especially with hurricane season beginning. Make sure you take the necessary precautions to protect your house, yard, and pool. You may even consider upgrading your windows or installing hurricane shutters, and if you have questions, you can always reach out to our sponsors. Enjoy your June!

Family-Friendly Summer Entertainment at Maltz Jupiter Theatre The Maltz Jupiter Theatre (MJT) has entertainment options for everyone in June and July. On June 23 and 24, middle and high school students from MJT’s Goldner Conservatory of Performing Arts (GCPA) summer camp bring the oddball romantic comedy Guys and Dolls to the MJT stage. The story follows gambler Nathan Detroit as he tries to find the cash to set up the biggest craps game in town, and Frank Loesser's brassy, immortal score helps makes this crowd-pleasing musical a treat for audiences of all ages. International performer and GCPA faculty member Ricky Nahas serves as director and choreographer. On July 1 and 2, be sure to catch Students from the Godspell, the first major musical by threeMaltz Jupiter Theatre’s time Grammy® and Academy Award® Professional Training Program will perform winner Stephen Schwartz. Performed Godspell on the MJT stage July 1 and 2. by soon-to-be-graduates of the MJT’s Pictured is Arthur Wesley. Photo by Jen inaugural Professional Training Program, Vasbinder.
the musical, which features the international hit “Day by Day” and a host of other beloved songs, chronicles the adventures of a troupe of actors who help Jesus Christ stage parables and teach kindness, love and tolerance through games, storytelling, and spot-on comedic timing. Broadway veteran and Conservatory faculty member Brian Andrews directs and choreographs. On July 28 and 29, GCPA summer camp participants in grades 3-5 present Roald Dahl’s James and the Giant Peach, Jr., the spectacular tale of a boy, his insect friends, and their amazing cross-ocean journey. A delightful adaptation of the classically quirky children’s book, the musical combines a witty, charming story with an unforgettable score to highlight courage and self-discovery. Once again, Ricky Nahas directs and choreographs. Student productions feature professional production values such as lights, sets, costumes and full orchestra. Tickets to all student shows are $20 for students and $25 for adults. For show times, tickets and more information, call 561.575.2223 or visit www.jupitertheatre.org. ■

How Do You Spell Love? By Darla Parris Smallwood
Some people say that kids spell love, T-I-M-E. If love is indeed defined by the quality and amount of time that parents willingly give to their children, perhaps no children are more loved than seven-year-old Dylan and five-year-old Giahna Lipset. Their parents, Steve and Leonor Lipset, first met 11 years ago, when Leonor still lived in her homeland of Peru, and Steve, a native New Yorker, was vacationing there. Married one year later, they moved to Westchester, but the Lipsets (especially Leonor, who was used to Lima’s milder, warmer, drier climate) eventually grew tired of the snow. What’s more, traveling back to Peru once or twice a year was important to Steve and Leonor, perhaps even more so once their children were born, but flights there were both long and expensive. 8

More and more, Florida began calling the Lipsets’ names. Steve had friends in West Palm Beach and had visited the area, but he knew that wasn’t precisely the right place for his family. Three years ago, drawn to Palm Beach Gardens partly because of its good schools, they settled on a home in Mirabella.
Steve and Leonor say they feel fortunate to be able to center their lives on seven-year-old Dylan and his five-year-old sister. Steve is semi-retired after a long career in banking. Leonor, who was a licensed architect back in Peru, now does only occasional remote work for her brother’s engineering firm there. “We spend most of our time with the kids and their activities,” she explains. Dylan, a second-grader at Marsh Pointe Elementary, loves school, especially reading, and willingly does his homework every afternoon, says his dad. Dylan also takes golf lessons. Giahna, a pre-K student at Mirasol School, studies ballet and tap. Next year, she will join her brother at Marsh Pointe. The two both speak fluent Spanish and English. “They’re great kids. We’re very lucky,” says Steve. But, clearly, it isn’t all about luck…
“Leonor has done such a good job of creating an organized routine for our children, one that they both seem very happy with,” says Steve. “They go to school, come home and have a snack before doing their homework, and then we all get to do something fun before dinner and the kids’ bedtime.” One of the best parts of living in Mirabella, says Steve, is that the possibilities for fun are so wideranging. Because there’s limited traffic, the children can enjoy riding bikes and scooters around the development, and their home’s culde-sac location is the perfect place for Dylan and Giahna to roller-skate, kick around a soccer ball, and just enjoy good old-fashioned play time with a handful of other neighborhood kids close to their ages. Make no mistake, however: In Mirabella, there are plenty of options for fun for all ages, including planned holiday parties, Continued page 10

luaus, book readings and a host of other activities at the clubhouse/kids’ clubhouse. “We have been so warmly welcomed here, and we’ve met so many other New Yorkers and people with similar reasons for coming to the area. We enjoy spending time with people we’ve met,” says Steve, “and Leonor absolutely loves to entertain.” Once or twice a month, Leonor invites a halfdozen or more friends for dinner, where she serves traditional Peruvian dishes like ceviche and causa. (If you don’t know what these are, be nice to Leonor – maybe she’ll invite you over to find out!) Grateful for their family’s many blessings, the Lipsets attend Spanish mass together every Sunday at The Cathedral of St. Ignatius Loyola Catholic Church, where Steve and Leonor help with fundraisers and other church events whenever they can. The family celebrated Dylan’s first communion there in April, and Leonor’s mother, who is still visiting, traveled from Peru for the occasion. That same gratitude also motivates Leonor to help children less fortunate than her own. She does regular volunteer work for St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, and she is currently growing her hair to donate to an organization that makes wigs for children with cancer. “I have done it once before. I just feel that I have been given so many gifts. My hair grows fast, and these children touch my heart. I know God wants me to help.”

ex p e r t c o n t r i b utor DR. DAVID SHUTER, M.D.
Plastic Surgery without Surgery By Dr. David Shuter Even as plastic surgery becomes increasingly popular and effective, some people still rule out a trip to the operating room. People in this group may fear surgery or pain, have financial restraints, or simply not be healthy enough for surgery, perhaps due to age or medical status. Until the last decade or so, this group had limited treatment options, and therefore limited potential for improvement, but relatively new treatments have changed all that. There are three major categories of non-surgical treatments. The first and most popular is Botox. More formally known as a neurotoxin, Botox and its competitors have the ability to relax certain facial muscles, thereby minimizing lines and wrinkles. Most commonly used on the upper face and forehead, Botox creates a softening effect that can reduce “the angry look” and smooth skin in these areas. Treatments typically last approximately three months and can be repeated for maintenance as desired. Facial fillers constitute a second extremely popular treatment category. These materials can be injected into depressions and lines to fill out indentations and to smooth skin. There are many filler material options, depending on the facial zone and desirable material properties (e.g. thick vs. thin, shorter-term vs. semipermanent, reversible or not.) Each physician has favorites based upon facial area, experience, and patient expectations. Longevity depends upon material used and other factors, and can range from a few months to two years or more.
Reason

Direct skin treatments are the third major category, which offers numerous options depending upon patient desires. These can range from OTC creams and lotions, to medical grade products, to chemical peels, to lasers and other light-based therapies. Successful treatments can reverse sun damage and/or improve skin tone/color, elasticity, and overall skin quality. Choosing the best treatment requires consideration of many factors, including severity of problems, patient expectations, and cost. Once again, maintenance is critical, and improvements can be additive. Obviously, there are other treatments available as well. However, the above options are not only "tried and true" with strong scientific evidence of effectiveness, but also performed by the great majority of cosmetic physicians. Natural results are much better than a "too much" plastic look, and this should be discussed pre-treatment with your provider. Properly selected treatment, performed by a skilled and board-certified provider, can lead to great results and happy patients. You deserve the best. David Shuter, M.D. is a board-certified plastic surgeon with 25 years’ experience in the Jupiter area. He is the inventor of the Illumask, a home-based phototherapy mask, and he has been featured on TV and in national magazines and newspapers. Please call 561-743-0244 for a personal consultation with Dr. Shuter.

Footprints in the Sand By Shawn Taker
If you live in South Florida, it’s a safe bet you’ve taken a walk or two on the beach. Have you ever noticed that one foot turns out more than the other, or your stride is uneven? If you haven’t, pay attention next time you’re out for a stroll. You’ll see that your footprints are off. In fact, just about everybody has some kind of imbalance.
I used to think my uneven footprints were because of an old injury, so
there was nothing I could do about it. However, the more I studied movement and learned about the body, the clearer it became that there was more to it than I had previously been aware. Once I started focusing on correcting some of the imbalances in my hips and shoulders, I could see and feel differences in my walks on the beach. It didn’t take long. Just a few of the right exercises and I was moving more evenly and easily across the sand. Every week we hear about people who have to give up their beach walks because walking hurts; their bodies just can’t do it anymore. They find themselves going out less and

less frequently until they eventually stop trying at all. For some people, giving up that walk on the beach feels like giving up one of their greatest freedoms. Our favorite clients to work with are the ones who refuse to give up that freedom. They apply the principles we teach and put a little effort into making improvements – It really doesn’t take a lot of effort, or a lot of time. The key is knowing some simple techniques that make a huge difference in the balance of the body. As your body changes, your footprints in the sand will even out, and you’ll soon realize that you have much more control than you thought. ex p e r t c o n t r i b utor RELIABLE GOLF CARTS
Choosing the Right Golf Cart By Albert Narvaez
When you’re ready to purchase a golf cart, you need to know whether an electric or gas cart is right for you. To decide, ask yourself three questions: 1. How do you plan to use your cart? 2. Where are you going to use your cart? 3. How much do you have to spend? Pros and Cons of Electric Carts • They run more quietly. • They are much more environmentally friendly than gaspowered carts.
• They do not require you to be as mechanically inclined to keep them operating. • They are typically more affordable. • They lack the power to handle a larger property. Pros and Cons of Gas Golf Carts • They offer more “get up and go” for use on a hilly/larger terrain. • They don’t require access to electricity for charging. • They may fall under stricter emission regulations. For more information about which option best suits you, contact Reliable Golf Carts at 561.729.4316.

Non-Invasive Imaging for Heart Disease By Dr. Dewey Carpenter, Jr, ACVIM-Cardiology
In both humans and pets, special tests can be used to evaluate the heart. Aside from an electrocardiogram (aka EKG or ECG), other tests include radiographs (X-rays) and echocardiography. Thoracic Radiographs: Radiographs provide a general assessment of cardiac size and shape, but more importantly, allow for evaluation of the lungs. While echocardiograms have widely replaced radiographs for evaluation of heart size, shape and function, radiographs are still the primary way to evaluate the lungs. Air within the lungs will interfere with the ultrasound, yet does not hamper radiography. Chest radiographs may be taken to determine if an animal is in congestive heart failure, with fluid accumulating in or around the lungs, secondary to poor cardiac function. Echocardiogram: The echocardiogram, or cardiac ultrasound, is a noninvasive technique that, when performed properly, has excellent diagnostic capabilities. Currently the gold standard of diagnostic testing in veterinary cardiology,

This allows the cardiologist to (noninvasively) visualize the heart muscle, heart valves, and the great arteries. co mm u n i t y n e ws RESIDENTS WANTED
Your Community Magazine Wants YOU! Everybody has a story, and sometimes the most interesting ones come from people who don’t think they have much to tell. From work and community involvement, to hobbies, travel and other interests, the self-perceived “ordinary” things that make you distinctively you, are often, in others’ eyes, quite extraordinary. Our magazine enjoys helping bring neighbors together and fostering a closer-knit community by featuring residents of all ages, backgrounds, and interests. No one has to have rescued puppies from a burning building or bungee-jumped off the Empire State Building to be featured (though if you have, we definitely need to get you on an upcoming cover). We believe in the simple power of connections, of people getting to each other one resident or family at time. Help us tell the stories of those who make this community a great place to live, work, and raise a family. Volunteer to share your story, or nominate another resident or family to be highlighted. Whether it’s the proverbial new kid on the block or the long-timer who’s watched the community grow from the ground up, the neighbor who started the book or bridge club, or the mastermind behind that new beer tasting or belly dancing group – so many stories beg to be told! Send self-nominations or nominations, complete with the following information, to dsmallwood@ bestversionmedia.com: •
