POWER YOGA TRIBE

Happy 4th of July! When my children were young, summer meant weekend barbecues around the pool. My refrigerator was always stocked with burgers, hot dogs, corn on the cob and watermelon. No matter how crazy life was between work, camp, and other activities, the weekends were for reconnecting with our friends, family, and neighbors. Our hope is for this magazine to connect you with your neighbors and your community. It’s our goal to help promote that dialogue and to provide helpful and educational information. I want to thank you, our readers, for all that you do to help those hopes become reality. Thank you for your input, your kind words, your enthusiasm, and for giving me the best job I’ve ever had! It’s a pleasure and a privilege to share your stories. In just under four years, between our four magazines, David and I have featured 155 families. We continue to invite you to make this YOUR publication. Please don’t hesitate to recommend a resident to be featured or to nominate yourself. Everyone has a story to share, and we’d be honored to tell yours. We also appreciate the commitment of our sponsors. Their involvement makes it possible for our team to provide you with information that educates, entertains and inspires. As you read through this issue, I hope that you’ll be motivated to support those sponsors who help us make it all happen. I wish you a wonderful July…full of laughter, good food, and great memories!

Family-Friendly Shows, Great Camps at MJT, Conservatory On July 1 and 2, be sure to catch Godspell, the first major musical by three-time Grammy® and Academy Award® winner Stephen Schwartz. Performed by soon-tobe-graduates of the MJT’s inaugural Professional Training Program, the musical chronicles the adventures of a troupe of actors who help Jesus Christ stage parables and teach kindness, love and tolerance through games, storytelling, and spot-on comedic timing. Broadway veteran and Conservatory faculty member Brian Andrews directs and choreographs. On July 28 and 29, GCPA summer camp participants in grades 3-5 present Roald Dahl’s James and the Giant Peach, Jr., the spectacular tale of a boy, his insect friends, and their amazing cross-ocean journey. A delightful adaptation of the classically quirky children’s book, the musical combines a witty, charming story with an unforgettable score to highlight courage and self-discovery. Once again, Ricky Nahas directs and choreographs. On August 12, students from MJT’s Youth Artists’ Chair summer internship program present The Diary of Anne Frank, an impassioned drama about the lives of eight people hiding from the Nazis. The play explores mature themes as it captures the claustrophobic realities of their daily existence. A

new adaptation for a new generation, the piece was created by local students with guidance from industry professionals at MJT. For show times, tickets and more information, call 561.575.2223 or visit www.jupitertheatre.org. Looking for vacation camp options for the kids this summer? Look no further than the MJT Conservatory. Budding young performers can participate in a range of theatre-related activities, including acting, dancing, singing, prop-making, improvisation, storytelling and more. Many of the summer camps conclude with unique themed showcase performances, and enrollment fees are all-inclusive, covering all costumes and performance-related costs. Other camp options include the following: July 5-7: three-day Improv and Comedy camp for grades K-2 and 3-5, and the audition-only three-day Dance Company camp with Brian Andrews July 10-14 and July 31-Aug. 4: two sessions of one-week Dance Intensive camps for grades 6-12 July 31-Aug. 4 only: a one-week Disney Frozen camp for grades K-2 and a one-week Pokemon camp for grades 3-5 Camp registration is now open. Enjoy a July Play Date with PBG Recreation Submitted by the City of Palm Beach Gardens

Since 1985, America has celebrated July as the nation’s official Park and Recreation Month. Created by the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA), Park and Recreation Month specifically highlights the vital and powerful role that local parks and recreation (such as Palm Beach Gardens Recreation) play in conservation, health and wellness, as well as social equity efforts in communities all across the country. This year, it’s all about discovering the power of play with your local parks and recreation facilities. Whether you’re learning a new sport like pickleball or meeting your friends on the playground, Palm Beach Gardens parks and recreation facilities are the places where everyone can play, regardless of age or ability. NRPA and the City of Palm Beach Gardens encourage everyone to get out there and experience the power of play for themselves. In Palm Beach Gardens, you can celebrate Park and Recreation month by attending Movie Nights & Food Truck

Bites on July 21, viewing the “Wildlife” art exhibit at City Hall, having your child participate in an awesome summer camp, or visiting the refreshing Gardens Summer GreenMarket at STORE every Sunday from 9am-1pm. “July is the perfect time to highlight all the benefits parks and recreation can provide right here in Palm Beach Gardens,” says Recreation Director Laura Schuppert. Nationally, NRPA celebrates Park and Recreation Month with a weekly contest encouraging people to show why play is so important in their lives. They can also share this with the hashtag #PlayOnJuly. For more information about the contest and/or Park and Rec Month in general, visit www.nrpa.org/July. To learn about specific Park and Recreation Month activities planned for Palm Beach Gardens, pick up a calendar at Burns Road Recreation Center, 4404 Burns Road, or visit www.pbgrec. com. 

Karma Burning: Episode III By Dr. Tracy L. Hackett, AP DAOM

The scaffolding creaked and shuddered as I tiptoed barefoot across the clattering plywood sheets. (Shoes are not allowed in Hindu temples and foot washing is typically done before entering).Getting the scaffolding in place had been no easy task. As I was preparing to begin my work, the priests sat me down and told me that they had done the horoscope for the work and determined that this was not a fortuitous time for it to take place. Undeterred, I challenged them. I explained that my passport stamp gave me but one year to finish, and that I was certain they didn’t want an unfinished representation of the deity left hanging in the main temple for all to see. I also questioned whether they were suggesting that the head swami who had invited me to do the work was wrong in thinking that the timing of the project was just fine. Not about to “go there,” they conceded that he was indeed right, and confirmed that the scaffolding I needed for the work would be in place that very week. Still, the Brahmin priests questioned my worthiness to paint the god, and they were particularly unhappy that my feet, bare or not, hovered above the Vishnu shrine in temple’s center. Feet are considered the dirtiest part of the body. Even pointing one’s feet in the wrong direction is an insult. Sitting with one’s feet directed toward a teacher, for instance, or gesturing toward/touching something or someone with the feet is disrespectful. Having one’s feet anywhere near or above the deity in a shrine shows the ultimate disrespect. I meant no disrespect, and I was admittedly unaware of some of the

rules that I was breaking. Obstacles continued to arise as a result of cultural and religious differences. The head priest, Ayyar Swami, was a blue-eyed man with a smooth, coffee complexion, fine features, and white hair. He had been performing pujas (daily rites) in the converted Ayurvedic hospital temple

The priests’ next concern was that I should only work three weeks of the month, due to Hindu taboos regarding menstruation. I managed to convince them to allow me to continue working every day, but not without some intense and contentious conversations. Still, I was not without support. The youngest priest was a wild-eyed man with unkempt flowing black tresses but a simple grace in his gait. Every sunrise and sunset, he came to do the puja in the shrine of the pretty little temple where I worked. He often appeared in between dawn and dusk as well, for many special times of the moon calendar. Although he never spoke to me either directly or through

shrines for at least fifty years. His wrought facial expressions and snorts toward me every time I passed made it clear that he did not welcome my presence. Not fully understanding why he took such a dislike to me, I assumed the old man was senile.

an interpreter, he frequently offered me blessings and prasad (consecrated sweet food). He was gentle towards me every time we met; he always smiled as he placed flower gifts at the feet of the deity in the shrine. There is no mistaking a kind heart no matter the language.  July 2017

Keeping It Real By Darla Parris Smallwood

When Brooke and Mick Stanton first moved to Palm Beach County from Los Angeles four years ago, they knew one thing for sure: “Come hell or high water, we would never live in a gated or planned community!” says Brooke. Oh, well, as American spiritual leader and author Ram Dass once said, “Our plans never turn out as tasty as reality.” After spending their first few Florida years in Juno Beach, the Stanton family, which includes four-year-old Skylar and one-year-old Sophia, moved to Evergrene in February, 2017. According to Brooke, the family couldn’t be happier. Atlanta-born Brooke, and Mick, who hails from Australia, say they love being part of a community of friendly people. Approachable and outgoing themselves, the Stantons like 8

chatting with neighbors they encounter on the sidewalk, and knowing there’s someone around to bring in packages from your porch when you’re away, or to help you move that heavy pool table you just bought. “And if someone needs to borrow a cup of milk or have us help them out with something, our door is open; we’re there for them too,” says Brooke. The Stantons’ older daughter is apparently equally delighted with life in the new neighborhood. “When Skylar went outside for the first time after we moved here and looked around at all the kids to play with, you could practically hear her thinking, ‘How lucky am I?’” Brooke says. Of course, it isn’t just the Stanton kids who like to play. Outdoor-lovers Brooke and Mick enjoy paddle-boarding, kayaking, and taking their girls on beach outings. Brooke is also active with a local running group. “The outdoor lifestyle is really what drew us to Florida,” Brooke explains. But even if they can’t get an outdoor table at Duffy’s, she and Mick enjoy

rooting for Alabama and the New York Giants during football season (Brooke’s brother graduated from the University of Alabama, and both Brooke and Mick have lived in New York.) That’s not to suggest, however, that the grown-up Stantons don’t work hard too. Mick is an attorney at Ocwen Financial Corporation, where his official title is Senior Vice President, Deputy General Counsel and Company Secretary. Brooke is not only a stay-at-home mom; she’s also a Continued page 10

romance novelist who penned The Misadventures of Catie Bloom and The Adventures of Natalie Bloom. The latter was a #1 best-selling e-book on Amazon and nabbed second place in the Florida Romance Writers 2015 Golden Palm Writing Contest. The third and final book in her Bloom Sisters series, The Downfall of Catie Bloom, debuts this summer. Brooke self-publishes her work through her own publishing company, Coco and Bee. To those who ask Brooke how she finds time to write when she has two young children underfoot, Brooke says, “I’m just blessed with a good napper!” On a more serious note, she adds that juggling it all can definitely be a challenge, but she doesn’t even try to be a martyr. “I do think it’s important to show the kids that I’m following my passions and dreams. I want my daughters to understand that my work is at home. It’s not a ‘Daddies go to work and mommies just stay at home’ kind of situation.” Skylar actually said that once, and I was like, ‘No, no, NO!’” As busy as they both are, Brooke and Mick still find

time to be involved in their community. They both support organizations devoted to cancer research. (Mick, although healthy now, was diagnosed with bladder cancer about five years ago.) Both Brooke’s running group, and the “moms group” to which she also belongs, often raise funds for these and other deserving nonprofits. In addition, Brooke, a firm believer in pitching in politically at the grassroots level, regularly hosts meetings where similarly action-minded people plan steps to improve the community. She also participates in efforts to support women in business. All in all, things may not have all turned out exactly as the Stantons planned. But the Evergrene-based life that they lead now is undeniably a rich and vibrant one. Ram Dass might call it a decidedly “tasty reality.” ————————————————————————————————————— Do you have a story to share, or do you know a neighbor who does? ex p e r t c o n t r i b utor ANYTHING BATTERIES

Ready, Set, Go Get Ready for Hurricane Season! By Sue Chonoles

Hurricane season officially arrived in June, so if you’re not ready yet, it’s time to get cracking! The wind, rain, and tornadic activity that often accompany hurricanes can wreak havoc with power lines/power and even the solar panels on your roof. When the power unexpectedly goes out, a good supply of batteries goes far in helping you weather the storm. Flashlights are far safer to use than gas lanterns, which can easily tip over and start fires, and a battery-powered radio can tell you what weather conditions to expect, whether you have to boil water, when power might be restored, and where to find the nearest shelter. In short, flashlights and radios can be lifesavers, but without batteries, these devices will leave you in a lurch when you need them most. Stock up today on the various sizes of batteries that

your devices require. Don’t wait until the last minute when everyone and his brother is scrambling to buy the last package in the store. (And, by the way, we aren’t talking about rechargeable batteries. How will you charge them when the power’s out?) Speaking of hurricane preparedness, go ahead and gather first aid equipment and any medications you might need as well. And don’t forget to stockpile plenty of water, and food that you can eat cold. If ravioli, stews or other canned goods end up in your emergency food pantry, be sure you have a manual can opener at the ready. Non-sudsy bleach can also be good to have on hand, in case you need to purify water; but make sure you know how to do it properly. Prepare now to stay safe no matter what hurricane season may bring! At Anything Batteries, we have all of your battery supplies. Visit us at 1665 N. Old Dixie Highway, Suite 11, in Jupiter, or call us at 561.746.6551. 

Peggy Adams Seeks Volunteers to

Foster Animals, Save Lives

Provided by Lauren N. Ellis, Events and Marketing Manager, Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League

Peggy Adams Rescue League, the largest animal rescue shelter in Palm Beach County, provides services to over 45,000 dogs, cats, puppies and kittens each year. Along with Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control, its mission is to eliminate dog and cat euthanasia of adoptable animals in Palm Beach County by 2024 through their collaborative Countdown2Zero initiative. Although much progress has been made toward this goal through adoptions, the opening of a kitten nursery, TNVR (trap, neuter, vaccinate, and return), and a growing foster program, the League seeks even more community volunteers to serve as foster parents. Fosters provide short-term homes for dogs, cats, puppies and kittens until they are ready for adoption. A foster parent typically houses and cares for the animal(s) for two to four weeks. All foster parents are matched according to their available timeframe. Adams provides the foster parent with

all supplies and wellness requirements, including food, litter, toys, vaccines, etc., while the foster provides a temporary home, socialization, care and love. Being a foster parent not only saves lives, it also enriches the lives of every volunteer. Peggy Adams’ foster program also offers community service hours for children 10 to 17 years old. If you are interested in becoming a Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League foster parent, please contact Shannon Clounts at S.Clounts@peggyadams.org, call 561.472.8578 or visit PeggyAdams.org/Foster. Together we can save lives! ď Ž

Plastic Surgery for the Arms By Dr. David Shuter

Toned and strong arms are a critical part of a woman's body. While less-than-perfect arms can often be camouflaged with long sleeves, Florida’s climate makes this solution far from optimal. Cosmetic arm issues are therefore a common concern in my office, but many women are unaware of the range of practical treatment options. As with every other medical decision, diagnosis of the problem is the first step. Multiple variables related to arm shape and appearance, skin quality/laxity and fatty deposition are important considerations in determining the most appropriate, effective treatment. Smoking, genetics, and weight gain and loss are important considerations as well, especially since they can add risk to treatment. A younger patient, especially if a bit overweight, might be unhappy due to a fatty collection in her upper arms. An

older woman might suffer from loose skin alone, or, as is often the case, in combination with a fat issue. If the dominant issue is fat alone, the best treatment is fat reduction. This can range from weight loss and exercise, to Coolsculpting, to liposuction. Coolsculpting, the newest nonsurgical option, uses a freezing device to reduce the fatty bulge of the arms. This procedure is performed in our office while the patient watches TV or relaxes quietly for an hour. It can reduce the fatty bulge by approximately 20-25% per cycle. There is no down time, and recovery is typically relatively simple and quick. Liposuction remains the gold standard for fatty bulge reduction. This common surgical outpatient procedure reduces and reshapes the arms. While there is some Continued page 17

downtime as with any surgery, discomfort is minimal and results are predictable. If redundant skin is a variable, surgical excision is typically the best option for removing extra skin and tightening the upper arms. Otherwise known as a brachioplasty or an arm lift, this surgery will leave scars, typically from the armpit to the elbow, although this is customized to each individual's presentation. This outpatient procedure does result in some additional downtime, as more work is needed. However, if a woman has significant extra hanging skin, the transformation can be dramatic; the procedure has a high satisfaction rate. Many women tell me in their initial consultation that they shy away from wearing sleeveless dresses and tops because they feel ashamed of their upper arms. The above treatments provide options to these women, empowering them to stop hiding their arms under long sleeves in the Florida heat, and start proudly showing off their trim, toned arms in any outfit. David Shuter MD is a board-certified plastic surgeon with 25 years’ experience in the Jupiter area. He is the original inventor of the Illumask home-based phototherapy mask, and he has been featured on TV, as well as in national magazines and newspapers. You deserve the best. Don’t Delay Your A-Ha! Moment By Pattie Light

on price alone. To achieve quality results, you’ll need help from people who believe that you deserve to succeed. Ask yourself these questions before you choose a gym:

Do you make the same resolution year after year about your need to exercise, only to have that end-of-season party or birthday dinner derail your good intentions? According to some pretty depressing statistics generated by the fitness industry, many people procrastinate about finding time to work out until (a) they receive a devastating diagnosis from their doctor or (b) their spouse declares “enough is enough” and divorce proceedings get underway. Believe it or not, some of these same people actually pay for monthly gym memberships. Clearly, paying is definitely not the same as playing! Why wait for things to become this drastic to have an A-Ha! Moment and realize the power of getting and staying fit? Here are a few gentle suggestions to help you not only get going, but put some pleasure in the process:

1. Does it offer options for strength and cardio, as well as offering solid nutrition advice? 2. Can their programs be customized to my current condition and encourage me to progress to meet my goals? 3. Is it clean and easy to navigate? 4. Are their hours in sync with my schedule? 5. Does the staff seem genuinely interested in my success? • Find rewards that aren’t all about food. You and your buddy don’t want to put all that energy into working out in your great new gym, then turn around and sabotage your efforts with too many treats. Nutrition is a key element in your fitness regimen; some experts say as much as 80%. (Sorry, but it’s true.) So treat yourself to some guilt-free “you time,” pampering, or a new experience instead of bag of chips and/ or a banana split!

• Find the right workout buddy. No matter what your age, find someone whose company you enjoy, someone who will stick with you and keep you accountable. Text, email or even call that person today and get him or her onboard. Make a date as soon as possible to develop your strategy and identify your specific needs.

As Kelly Clarkson says in her song, “What doesn’t kill us makes us stronger.” Take the time to balance your life with exercise. You’ll quickly find out the truth of those lyrics and say, “A-HA!” This is what I’ve been missing! To your health and fitness, Pattie Light 

• Find the right facility. All gyms are not created equal. If you have one in your neighborhood that you haven’t used in five years, maybe it simply isn’t the one for you. When you finally find the right gym, you’re going to go there at least three times a week, so you want to choose a place where you’ll feel at home. Shopping for a gym shouldn’t be based

Understanding and Preventing Periodontal Disease Provided by Appearance Implant Dental

Most people who have periodontal disease are not aware of it because the disease is usually painless in the early stages. Unlike tooth decay, which often causes discomfort, it is possible to have periodontal disease without noticeable symptoms. Having regular dental check-ups and periodontal examinations is essential to early detection of periodontal problems. Periodontal disease begins when plaque (a sticky, colorless, film of bacteria, food debris, and saliva) is left on the teeth and gums. The bacteria produce toxins (acids) that inflame the gums and slowly destroy the bone. Brushing and flossing regularly and properly ensures that plaque is not left behind to do its damage. Other than poor oral hygiene, several other factors can increase the risk of developing periodontal disease: • Smoking or chewing tobacco. Tobacco users are more likely than nonusers to develop plaque and tartar on their teeth. • Certain tooth or appliance conditions. Bridges that no

longer fit properly, crowded teeth, or defective fillings can trap plaque and bacteria. • Many medications. Steroids, cancer therapy drugs, blood pressure meds, oral contraceptives and some other medications have side effects that reduce saliva, making the mouth dry so that plaque more easily adheres to the teeth and gums. • Puberty, oral contraceptives and pregnancy. Since they all change hormonal levels, they can all increase gum tissue’s sensitivity to bacteria toxins. • Systemic diseases. Diabetes, blood cell disorders, HIV / AIDS, etc. can lead to serious periodontal problems. • Genetics. Some patients may be predisposed to a more aggressive type of periodontitis. Patients with a family history of tooth loss should pay particular attention to their gums. Good oral hygiene, a balanced diet and regular dental visits can help reduce your risk of developing periodontal disease. If you have any questions, or would like to schedule an appointment, we’re here for you. Call us at 561.513.4401. 

co m m u n i t y n e w s FROM THE DESK OF MAYOR MARINO

From the Desk of Mayor Marino By Mayor Maria Marino

When Janet and David Roy launched Fairway Living Magazine (one of their four local publications which also include Resort Living, Gardens Living, and Lighthouse Neighbors), they invited me, an LPGA member, to appear with my family on their first cover. Fast forward, and today I’m also Mayor Maria Marino of the City of Palm Beach Gardens, home of the PGA of America, and my home for over 30 years. Much has changed in Palm Beach Gardens since I first arrived. We used to go the six movie theaters at Loehman’s Plaza; now it’s the Cobb 16. Todays Honda Classic was known as the Jackie Gleason Inverrary Classic and was held down south. The Gardens Mall was just an idea, and there was no Costco nor Home Depot on Northlake. The current City Hall hadn’t even been built yet. Politics was once something I observed, but I never saw myself as a public official. I was satisfied supporting those who had the time and inclination. Again, things changed, and with the advent of term limits in Palm Beach Gardens, I

found myself throwing my hat into the ring to be a new city councilwoman, which led to my role as mayor. For those of you who may not know, we have one of the finest cities in the Palm Beach County. I hear it from local residents, businesses and even city officials from other cities within the state. Many of our departments have won awards for their leadership and knowledge, including our police, fire, accounting, and procurement departments – and many more. Our city manager, police chief and other staff members have been invited to speak around the state on a variety of subjects. Our tennis center, 15 city parks, and Sand Hill Crane Golf Course have also earned numerous accolades and awards. We are a city that believes in our motto: Live, learn, work and play. Our goal is to attract new residents and provide everything our families need to build a special life here. Welcome to Palm Beach Gardens! mmarino@pbgfl.com www.pbgfl.com  July 2017

Help! My Phone Got Wet! By Ryan Riley, Corporate Repair Manager

So you’ve accidentally poured a drink on your phone or laptop. Maybe your phone fell victim to a cannonball contest near the pool, or you were actually pushed into the pool with your phone in tow. All hope is not lost. It is possible to fix water-damaged phones, tablets and computers. Repair can succeed even if the device has been totally submerged in water. If you take the correct steps immediately, there is an excellent chance your device can be brought back to life again. Effects of Water on Electronics If the proper precautionary steps are not carried out after your device gets wet, it may still work for a while. However, you shouldn’t assume your device is fine. Features and functionality will start dying out as corrosion takes over. Even small amounts of water left inside your phone or tablet can quickly lead to corrosion. Eventually this can damage your device beyond repair. The tiny internal resistors and capacitors can corrode beyond function, and short circuits can fry essential electronic circuits. A professional repair company like iFixYouri has the expertise to remove any liquid or oil damage from your device and possibly get it working as good as new again. What to Do with Water-Damaged Electronics 1. Make sure the device is off and do not switch it on again.

2. Remove the SIM card if your device has cellular service. 3. Shake out any excess water and dry your device with a clean, dry cloth. 4. Put some rice (or silica if you have it) into a bag, and place the wiped-dry device into the rice immediately.* 5. As soon as possible, contact a repair company experienced with water-damaged devices. *The bag of rice is not a permanent, final solution. Although it will dry out your phone, the exposure to possibly damaging elements has already occurred. The liquids most commonly spilled on a device contain minerals and compounds that react over time with moisture in the air and even with other elements within the phone. Over time, these chemical reactions will catch up to you. The Real Fix for Water-Damaged Devices Make sure you find a company that specializes in repairing water damaged devices, rather than taking it to the manufacturer, who will most likely offer a reconditioned replacement at a premium price, and all the data from your old device might be gone for good. Companies specializing in fixing phones and computers damaged by water will give your device a thorough diagnostic. Then they can fix any problems that might prevent your device from operating normally. iFixYouri offers industry-leading water damage repair services for all devices, at its five Palm Beach county locations or via website mail-in service. 

Vertical Design By JoAnn Munro, ASID

Do you want to make your ceilings look loftier, while enhancing the open feel of your interior space? These vertical design tips can work wonders: • Walls are the largest area to design or decorate and paint with color. Taking advantage of this space can visually enlarge and enhance a room or larger area. •

Vertical design elements/details such as wallmounted televisions and asymmetrical shelving can make your family room’s media area a beautiful focal point. The warmth of the wood and contrasting colors and textures can enhance the visual height of the wall.

Vertical stripes in upholstery fabrics and draperies can also seemingly add height. (Floor-to-ceiling drapery treatments pack the most vertical value punch.) Drapery side panels on windows and doors are also perfect for framing a fabulous view!

In small bathrooms, rectangular tile placed vertically and accented with glass mosaic center detail visually enlarges your space. For example, bisque porcelain tile and contrasting spa blue mother-of-pearl emphasizes ceiling height.

Vertical wall sconces and pendants, as well as vertical wood paneling/trim details, can also create an illusion of height.

Separating one area from another with a vertical room divider can provide some visual separation without completely sacrificing and an open- concept design.

“Living” wall designs and vertical plantscapes emphasize height.

Remember, when space is at a premium, go vertical. Southeast Interior Design, Inc. is here to help with your vertical design – and all your design – needs. Call 561.745.6919 for an hourly consultation and find out how to freshen up your home or stage it for a quick sale. 

While popular culture suggests that ADHD is a condition that only affects kids, that is not the case. ADHD can be a serious issue for adults as well. Left untreated, it can lead to difficulties at work, depression, anxiety, relationship or marital problems, and even substance abuse. DID YOU KNOW? • 4.5% of U.S. adults have ADHD, according to the World Health Organization. (ncbi.nlm.nih.gov) • 8-10 million of these adults are undiagnosed. (adaa.org) • 60% of U.S. children with ADHD that is left untreated become adults with ADHD (adaa.org)

While no two people are exactly alike, the following behaviors tend to be more prevalent among adults with ADHD/ ADD: • Difficulties with structure and organization: Whether it’s forgetting to pay bills, coming into work late, missing appointments, or needing constant reminders about due dates, etc., adults with ADHD tend to be very “scatterbrained.” They often have trouble sticking with a single task; instead, they bounce from one to another, inhibiting productivity. • Struggling to relax or be still: Some adults who suffer from ADHD show the more traditional signs of hyperactivity, while others simply find it difficult to relax or “turn their brains off.” • Hyper-focus: Some adults with ADHD seem sloppy at work. Others present as paradoxically hard-

working because of their tendency to hyper-focus on a task once they get themselves “in the zone.” While this may not seem like a bad thing at face value, hyper-focusing can make people unaware of their surroundings, unable to change direction as priorities or expectations shift, and/ or neglectful of other tasks and commitments. • Poor listening skills or trouble retaining information • Procrastination If you think you or a loved one may have adult ADHD/ADD, testing by a professional to enable proper treatment is essential. Neurocore helps both children and adults tackle ADHD. Adults with ADHD have achieved improved concentration, better sleep and greater productivity through our program. Get Your Pool Hurricane-Ready By Peter C Marcello Jr.

Do you know what steps to take to protect your pool this hurricane season? • Trim dead limbs/branches that could become airborne and damage your house, pool equipment or screen enclosure. • Remove and store (inside) all unsecured items. Patio furniture, toys, canvas awnings, patio umbrellas, grills, telescopic poles, pool equipment, etc. can become dangerous projectiles in heavy winds. Remove and store solar blankets as well. (Do not throw these items into the pool where chemicals could damage them/removal could be difficult.). • Lock the safety straps on portable spa covers, or remove and store

them indoors along with any steps or benches. • If you remove any child safety fencing, keep children away from the pool after the fence is removed. • Shut down the breaker panel in case your pool motor/other permanently plumbed electrical equipment are submerged. Sandbag the area around the equipment if possible, and wrap exposed equipment in securely tied waterproof covering (e.g. garbage bags). • Do not drain the pool. An empty pool is subject to “floating”/“popping” out of the ground due to “lift” pressure from excessive ground water. Likewise, lowering the water level to help prevent the pool from overflowing is not recommended

because then rain water in your backyard will drain into your pool, instead of off your property. Runoff water also carries fertilizers, mulch and dirt that are harmful in your pool. Running the pump dry after the storm can cause serious pump damage. • Add extra liquid chlorine and circulate the pool before the storm or add some three-inch tablets and a floating chlorinator feeder to the pool to provide some sanitization in case you lose power and cannot run your pump after the storm. What to Know Before Seeing a Chiropractor By Dr. Andrew Hope

Chiropractors can help patients achieve/maintain optimal health. Many people see a chiropractor regularly because they know that doing so is one of the best ways to get healthy, avoid injury and feel great. What Does A Chiropractor Do? Chiropractors treat the body through alignment or adjustment. The whole idea behind chiropractic care is that the spine and body become unbalanced, causing a person to carry weight or stress on one side of the body. The spine can also become contorted, resulting in nerve pain. Chiropractors focus on getting the body back in balance. An alignment feels like a mixture between having joints popped and getting a massage. The patient usually lies on a table while the chiropractor has him/her cross the

arms, hold the knees up, and move into other positions. The chiropractor puts pressure on the appropriate area until the joints and spine pop back into position. It doesn’t hurt; in fact, many people say it feels good. The whole process is pretty quick; an appointment typically takes 30 minutes to an hour. Who Can See A Chiropractor? People of all ages can see a chiropractor. In fact, many professionals recommend that newborn babies see a chiropractor right after birth. Moving through the birth canal can be traumatizing for the child. In some cases the child experiences shoulder pain, spine or neck pain, or similar ailments that can lead to acid reflux, sleep problems, or other issues. Even the tiniest baby can benefit from chiropractic care. There are pediatric chiropractors, as well as “regular” chiropractors who see adults of all ages. An alignment can be beneficial to anyone. What Can a Chiropractor Treat? If you have neck, shoulder, or back pain, you should see a chiropractor. A misplaced disc, nerve pain or pain from whiplash can be safely treated by a skilled chiropractor. This is probably the most common reason people go. A chiropractor can also help pregnant women with pain during pregnancy and can help relax the uterus so that the baby moves into the proper position for birth. This is in addition to treating simple infections and discomforts. For more information or to schedule a visit, call Hope Health at 561.686.0120. 
