August is here, and the summer is winding down. Summer vacations and activities will soon be over as students head back to school. David and I have had a fabulous summer reconnecting with family, friends and co-workers, and traveling to Seattle, as well as to Ohio, Rhode Island, and Wisconsin. We’ll visit St. Augustine and Niagara Falls in August. Our final trip to Virginia in October for my nephew’s wedding will be the last family get-together this year. Years ago it was easy to lose track of school mates, friends, and even family members. Today’s technology has made it so much easier to maintain these relationships through phone calls, email, Facebook, texting, etc. But for me, the connection is much more personal when it’s face-to-face. Unless you FaceTime or use Skype, technology doesn’t allow you to see a smile or hear laughter. And even then, you don’t get to see the subtle nuances of body language or enjoy the warmth of a hug. We hope this magazine encourages face-to-face interactions between neighbors. The next time you see someone featured on the cover, say hello and share something about yourself and your family. It’s one small step toward becoming part of the fabric of your community. People are what make a neighborhood a living community instead of just a group of buildings. Reach out to me, too. I’d love to share your story. Enjoy the last days of summer. The holidays are just around the corner!

Jessica & Darren Coyne

co v e r s t o r y J essi c a a n d Da rre n C oyne

An Inside Job By Darla Parris Smallwood

“Everything in life starts with how you feel about yourself.” That’s not just something Jessica Coyne likes to say – it’s a mantra that she and her husband Darren Coyne live. Jessica, originally from Winthrop, Massachusetts, and Darren, who grew up in St. Charles, Missouri, first met in Los Angeles. After graduating from Emerson College in Boston, Jessica spent 13 years pursuing acting in the City of Angels. In 2008, after attending Maryville University, Darren won an acting award while doing additional studies at the John Robert Powers Academy in St. Louis. The achievement inspired him to head to the West Coast to seek work as an actor as well. The two aspiring performers met in an L.A. bar in late 2011. They exchanged phone numbers, but their first date wouldn’t happen until nearly a year later. “She was involved with someone at the time, so I kept my distance. But 10-11 months later, I was back in that same 8

bar with friends, and I remembered the girl I had met there earlier. I didn’t even think I still had her number, but it turns out that I did, so I reached out to her,” Darren explains. “I still had his number too,” Jessica adds. Both were in different and better places in their lives this time, and the couple soon began dating. For both Jessica and Darren, that “different and better place” centered on physical and emotional wellness. Darren, who had fallen into working behind the camera, felt professionally unfulfilled. Once a five-sport athlete, he longed to get into some type of coaching or training, so in 2014, with Jessica’s encouragement, he earned his personal training certification. “I got a job at a gym in L.A., and loved it right away. I had finally found what I was meant to do,” says Darren. Meanwhile, Jessica felt that she had hit her own “emotional

bottom” with her career. “At 30, I looked at my life and felt I didn’t have much to show for myself…there was a big empty hole in my soul. Then I found yoga. I had done it before, but this time it opened me up and helped me connect spiritually, develop a foundation of wellness, and make difficult changes in my life. It gave me so much…I realized that I wanted to teach it and help others.” Jessica subsequently earned her M.A. in spiritual psychology at the University of Santa Monica. She would become a yoga instructor and life coach, helping others heal and transform themselves. Jessica and Darren, quickly realizing that their relationship was serious, were ready transform their own lives in other ways as well. Eager to get out of what Darren refers to as “big, fast L.A.,” the couple decided that once they were married – while they still wanted to live someplace “coastal” – it needed to be someplace that felt more like home.

Darren had family in South Florida and had often visited the area as a kid. Jessica’s parents now lived in Palm Beach Gardens. “We talked about places that seemed ideal, and we were both on the same page about Florida,” Jessica explains. The two moved to Palm Beach Gardens in September, 2015, and within just a few weeks, they had both found their dream jobs. Darren is a full-time fitness coach/trainer at PGA

National’s fitness center, where Jessica also teaches yoga four times a week. (Outside of PGA National, Jessica also works as a spiritual life coach and trainer for other yoga instructors.) “Once Darren and I aligned with our true purpose, our lives began to shift. It’s what brought us here, where we both feel so fulfilled. We are at PGA all the time. We love the community and have truly found our home here. People have taken us in and supported us in helping others find wellness,” Jessica says. While the Coynes, who married on May 22, 2016, currently have no children of their own, they share an obvious commitment to helping children attain physical and emotional wellness. This month, Jessica will host donation-based yoga events at a Jupiter studio to benefit Smile Train, an international children’s charity to help those with cleft lips/ palates. Darren heads up the fitness department of PGA’s summer youth camp for children ages 6-14. Not only do they get golf instruction with the pros, Darren explains, but he gets to

work with them on strength and agility training, body awareness, hand-eye coordination, and a variety of other ageappropriate physical activities, all of which he describes as “good stuff for the body and mind.” “Some people work just for a paycheck, but I’m so happy that I actually get to do something that has long-term benefits for others. Being healthy and physically active helps with everything – mentally, spiritually, emotionally – It’s about helping people attain an overall better quality of life. It’s mind-blowing that I get to be part of this, and I can’t wait to do more!” “It’s all an inside job,” agrees Jessica. “When you feel good about yourself, you can achieve your truest fulfillment. And our truest fulfillment comes in knowing we get to help others with that.” ————————————————————————————————————— Do you have a story to share, or do you know a neighbor who does? co mm u n i t y n e ws FROM THE DESK OF MAYOR MARINO

Palm Beach Gardens: Then and Now By Mayor Maria Marino

The City of Palm Beach Gardens has a glorious history. It is one that I wish to share, while comparing the city in its early days to the Palm Beach Gardens of today. Incorporated in 1959 by Florida Statute, the initial organizational meeting was held July 25, 1959, in Lake Park, Florida. Herbert Thompson was named the first mayor and Norman Roland became the vice mayor. At that time, the land mass that is now Palm Beach Gardens was considered fresh, unoccupied territory, so city business was conducted in Lake Park. The Florida Construction Company, where the meeting was held, soon became the Public Works Department. Early financing for the city was supplied by Bankers Life and Casualty of Chicago, owned by John D. MacArthur. Today, 58 years later, I represent Palm Beach Gardens as its mayor, while Mark Marciano serves as our vice mayor. City business is conducted in our municipal complex on Military Trail. The complex is set to be renovated and expanded with some of the 1% sales surtax dollars the city now receives from the county. In 1959, Mayor Thompson’s objectives for a well-rounded

city read this way: “…with 3,800 acres of land, by usual standards this should mean about 12,500 lots plus parks and playgrounds, etc. and should accommodate a population of slightly more than 50,000 people. With the steady and growing migration to Florida, Palm Beach Gardens will reach this population within eight years.” Now, 58 years later, the population of Palm Beach Gardens has just reached the 50,000+ mark; however, the size of the city is not 3,800 acres but a land mass that is equivalent to over 55 square miles or 35,200 acres (almost 9 times the original incorporation). To put this into perspective, PGA National alone is 2,340 acres, and the future development of Avenir encompasses 4,800 acres, of which 2,400 will be designated preserve. This will bring the green space in Palm Beach Gardens to more than 50% of our entire city. To read more about our rich history, please visit our website, specifically the section of “City Council Meeting Archived Minutes.” There you find the original meeting minutes dating from 1959 to today. The foresight of those that came before us was truly amazing. mmarino@pbgfl.com | www.pbgfl.com 

Bufo Toad Toxicity By Carmen MH Colitz, DVM, PhD, DACVO

Bufo marinus, more commonly known as the cane toad, secretes a hallucinogenic neurotoxin from glands along its sides. Pets that mouth or bite these toads absorb the neurotoxin through their gums, and the poison irritates mucous membranes. Once absorbed, the toxin interferes with the heart rate and rhythm, which can be lifethreatening, particularly for small pets. Initial signs that your pet has come into contact with a cane toad include drooling, foaming at the mouth and bright red gums. Other symptoms of toxicity can include vomiting, stiff limbs, loss of balance and seizures. Consider these tips for keeping your pet away from cane frogs: • Keep your pet leashed when outside, especially during the rainy season, at dusk or early in the morning, when the toads are most active. • Keep your pet away from moist areas, around sprinklers,

under bushes and in other vegetation. These are the places where cane toads frequently hide. If you have reason to believe that your pet has mouthed or bitten a cane toad, take these steps immediately: • Use a damp washcloth to wipe out your pet’s mouth and gums to reduce the amount of toxin absorbed. Do not allow your pet to swallow the water. DO NOT ATTEMPT THIS IF YOUR PET IS EXPERIENCING A SEIZURE; AND DO NOT USE A HOSE! • Call your veterinarian or Jupiter Pet Emergency and Specialty Clinic. Follow whatever instructions you are given. • Try to remain calm. Be prepared to transport your pet as quickly as possible to the facility for emergency treatment. If your pet has an emergency, call us at 561.741.4041; then come right in. Calling before you bring your pet in for treatment will give our staff time to prepare for your individual situation and requirements, and enable us to give you instructions for transport. 

Expansions to VA Medical Center By Josh Miller, General Manager

With so much current news about spending cuts to the federal budget, care for our veterans is always at the forefront of the discussion. Gilmore Electric is proud and honored to have been a part of expansion and improvement projects at the VA over the last few years, and would like to share some of the completed, ongoing, and upcoming projects. I am thrilled to see so much money and so many resources being devoted to improving services for our veterans here in Palm Beach County. In June, 2017, the VA Medical Center in WPB celebrated its 22nd anniversary. In 2016, the VA completed construction of a new building in order to add two new Tesla MRI scanners. This exciting project enabled incorporation of all LED lighting and advanced lighting control systems. Attached are some pictures of the completed project. VA projects for 2017 and 2018 also include the renovation and expansion of their emergency room, as well as of the ambulatory and GI lab. A new domiciliary building and renovations to the 6th floor are also in the works. We are so grateful to our veterans for their service to this country and for their continued sacrifices to keep our country free and protected. The VA Medical Center depends on the community’s generosity to make veterans’ stay and care there as comfortable as possible. Volunteers perform a number of services; if you are interested in learning more or joining in the mission to provide comfort and care for America’s veterans, please call or visit the VAMC West Palm Beach Voluntary Service Office.
