May is one of my favorite months. I celebrate my birthday, and Mother’s Day gives me an opportunity to thank all the women who have made such a difference in my life: my mom, my grandmother, my step-mother, and my mother-inlaw – not to mention so many other female role models. I’m fortunate to call a number of women “Mom.” My mother graduated from high school at the age of 16 and began working for the United States Air Force. After she married my dad, she soon became a stay-athome mom, raising four children. When I married at 21, I was given the gift of a second “mom.” My mother-inlaw, Noreen, had three sons and enjoyed welcoming “daughters” to the family. When her son and I divorced, she never took sides and instead maintained our relationship and her involvement with her grandchildren. When my mom passed away in 2001, my relationship with Noreen became even more important. She was even there at my wedding when I remarried in 2009, supporting me unconditionally. An amazing grandmother to my children, she is also a friend and role model to me. My husband David’s mom and two stepmothers were also present at our 2009 wedding. I was blessed to meet three women, all so different from one another, who nevertheless all received me with the same welcoming open arms. Along with all these wonderful “moms,” I am fortunate to have a number of female peers who support and inspire me. In addition, Armed Forces Day and Memorial Day, also in May, remind us to pay respective tribute to those women and men who currently serve in the United States’ armed forces, and to those who gave their lives during service. This May, I hope we all take a moment to thank those whose dedication and support have enriched our lives. And remember: Summer will be here before we know it, so get out and enjoy your May!

Magazines usually hit mailboxes the first week of the month. Dates may vary depending on the post office.

Don’t Let Your Legal Rights Float Away When Cruising the High Seas By Attorney Joshua D. Ferraro and Gary S. Lesser, Esq., Managing Partner

This year more than 20 million people throughout the world will embark on cruise vacations to destinations ranging from the Western Caribbean to the Far East. Each of these passengers can expect to enjoy new sights, adventure and (in most cases) large amounts of food. However, it’s those things that cruise passengers rarely expect that can end up costing them a relaxing vacation, and often a whole lot more. According to a study published through the National Center for Biotechnology Information, about one percent of cruise passengers will experience a traumatic injury during a cruise vacation. By far, the most prevalent cause of injury is an onboard slip and fall, but other common injuries occur on shore excursions and during tenders from ship to shore. If you are injured during a cruise vacation as a result of actions, inactions or negligence on the part of the cruise line, any employee of the cruise line or any company operating a shore excursion sponsored by the cruise line, you may have a legal entitlement to compensation. However, the procedures and deadlines for exercising these rights are much different from those in a typical personal injury case. The most important differences between a cruise ship injury case and a land-based injury claim are as follows: •

Cruise ship injuries are typically governed by federal maritime law (the law of the sea), rather than state civil law

Most of your rights and obligations are set forth in your cruise ticket, which is considered a binding contract.

You will need to file any lawsuits within one year, instead of the four years typically permitted in landbased injury claims.

If you are injured during a cruise vacation, follow these tips to ensure that you do not waive any rights: •

Report the injury as soon as possible to a cruise employee and make sure that they follow-up by documenting the time, place and manner of your accident.

Seek medical care immediately if you are injured. Almost every cruise has medical personnel on board, ranging from trained EMTs to board certified physicians. Most ships have the capability to run tests, take x-rays and even perform minor procedures. Make sure that you document all of your injuries Continued page 7

in pa r t n e r s h i p wi th LESSER, LESSER , L ANDY & SMITH, PL L C for the medical personnel and follow all of their recommendations regarding your level of activity while you are on board. •

Ask for a copy of any medical notes or records that are taken while treating you on board.

In rare circumstances, injuries will be so severe that you will need to be removed from the ship. In this case, you should contact the U.S. Embassy immediately to ensure that you are taken to a facility that can provide appropriate care.

If your accident was the result of a slip and fall, be sure to keep your shoes and your clothes so that they can be examined in the event the claim proceeds to court.

Ask if the incident was captured on video and ask to see a copy of the video. If they will not allow you to see the video, ask them to preserve it so that you can get a copy later. If possible, make this request in writing.

Every major cruise line requires that you provide formal notice of a claim within a very short period of time and that you file a lawsuit within one year. These

requirements are set forth in your ticket and they are binding upon you. These deadlines are far shorter than for most land-based accident claims, so it is vitally important that you obtain legal advice as soon as possible. •

Keep in mind, that most major cruise lines require that any lawsuit claiming personal injuries must be filed in South Florida. Therefore, if you live in another state, you should make arrangements (if possible) to consult with a South Florida cruise injury lawyer before you leave town.

The vast majority of cruise passengers have a great trips, filled with wonderful experiences and memories. Unfortunately, the unforeseen sometimes happens, and when it does, it is important to be informed so that important rights are not inadvertently waived. Therefore, it is vitally important that you contact a cruise injury attorney as soon as possible to secure your rights and ensure that you remain eligible for all available compensation. Joshua D. Ferraro, Esq. and Gary S. Lesser, Esq. are attorneys at Lesser, Lesser, Landy & Smith, which exclusively handles personal injury cases. ■

Familia Ante Omnia By Darla Parris Smallwood

Family. It’s but a single word, yet it says so much about what motivates David and Mary Elizabeth Coldwell. From their first date, to their current life together, everything that matters to them seems to start and end with love for, and devotion to, family. David is a Knoxville, Tennessee native and Mary Elizabeth hails from Orlando, but in the late 1960s, David’s mother and Mary Elizabeth’s mother had become Miami neighbors and best friends. Best friends who thought that plotting and planning a blind date for their respective children was the best idea ever! David and Mary Elizabeth didn’t share their mothers’ enthusiasm, but they did share a sense of obligation to honor their parents’ wishes. So, dragging their 8

feet and silently grumbling to themselves, they went on the date, with no intention other than subsequently saying to their parents, “Okay, we went on a date. The end.” Only it wasn’t. Eleven months later, on March 21, 1970, David and Mary Elizabeth were married. And just like that, the Coldwells were their own little family. David soon became a financial representative of Northwestern Mutual, where he has remained for some 45 years. Mary Elizabeth taught elementary school for six years, but when the Coldwells’ two sons, Grant and Christopher, were born, Mary became a stay-at-home mom. Although she later completed graduate work as a reading specialist, she never went back to the classroom. In fact, by the time she was ready to return to

work in 1985, she had developed such an interest in her husband’s business that she ending up becoming as an associate representative for David H. Coldwell, in which capacity she continues today. Time marches on, as they say. Now the Coldwell’s firstborn son Grant has worked for 17 years as a financial advisor representing Northwestern Mutual. He lives in Jupiter with his wife Amanda and their two-year-old triplets Ella Leona, Olivia Marie, and Carter Grant. “Watching the triplets grow is truly amazing; we have been given triple the joy,” says Mary Elizabeth. “We could not be prouder of Grant and Amanda, who have amazing parenting skills.” The Coldwells are also proud of Grant’s younger brother Christopher. Born with Downs Syndrome, Christopher has worked for Publix for 17 years, the last five at the Abacoa store. “He has a happy heart and so enjoys his interaction with people there,” says Mary Elizabeth. Christopher not only participates in Special Olympics events, excelling at shot put and swimming, but is also involved with his Publix store’s annual participation in the statewide Torch Icon Campaign, playing an instrumental role in fundraising for the Special Olympics. “God has blessed our work with our son, and he excels in so many areas,” says Mary Elizabeth. Christopher lives at home with his parents.

Not just family, but family traditions as well, are dear to the Coldwell family. In addition to three of the four members representing Northwestern Mutual, both sons earned Eagle Scout status – as did David’s own father. Furthermore, both David and Mary Elizabeth belong to organizations that they describe as “honoring lineage and patriotism.” David, who served in the U.S. Coast Guard during the Vietnam War, is a member of both Sons of the American Revolution and the Society of Colonial Wars, Palm Beach chapter. Mary Elizabeth, whose parents were Virginians, is a charter member of Virginia Society Daughters of the American Colonists. She also serves as chaplain for United Daughters of the Confederacy, and is a long-standing member of Daughters of the American Revolution. For the Coldwells, family most certainly includes “church family” too. David and Mary Elizabeth, who were married in the Miami Shores Presbyterian Church, continue to be active in the First Presbyterian Church of North Palm Beach, where David has previously served as an elder, and Mary Elizabeth as a deacon. Even the Coldwells’ life at PGA National, where they moved in late 1984, is a story that echoes the words family and family tradition. When the community had its first open house Continued page 10

to show off the new development model, the couple bought not one, but two lots. They built their own home on the one in Thurston, on the second hole of what is now the Fazio Course. They sold the second lot to Mary Elizabeth’s parents, who built their own home and lived there for more than a decade. Although her parents are now deceased, Mary Elizabeth says she still recalls how wonderful it was for them all to live in the same great community. While David’s parents have also passed away, the legacy of all four parents clearly lives on in David and Mary Elizabeth. “David and I always felt great responsibility to our parents

and appreciated all that they did for us…We have tried to continue that feeling with our kids, to stay close with them.” Whether David is golfing with Grant, he and Mary Elizabeth are watching Christopher hit the court in Special Olympics basketball, or all eight Coldwells are enjoying time together — in a word, it all comes back to family. ————————————————————————————————————— Do you have a story to share, or do you know a neighbor who does? It’s All about Options By Ryan Riley, Corporate Repair Manager

It’s all about options. Apple tries to shackle you into their ecosystem, forcing you into expensive service plans. They’ll threaten to cancel your warranty if you don’t repair the iPhone or iPad (that you paid for!) at their certified repair facilities. An old yarn that Apple likes to spin is that repair shops don’t know what they’re doing, that they use counterfeit parts, that they’re an absolute danger to you, your device, and your wallet. But this isn’t the case: They simply want to remove your options. iFixYouri is one such option that thrives despite Apple’s warning to the contrary. Since 2010, our technicians have been providing expert repair service for every make and model of smartphone, tablet and personal computer. From phones dropped in wet cement, to iPads that took a plunge from a five-story building, iFixYouri technicians have seen and repaired it all. But how did we get here? The iFixYouri story began in 2009, when our CEO and founder, Christopher Johncke, was laid off from his job as an engineer. During his disappointing job hunt, Chris broke his iPhone, his lifeline to the professional world. Like most people, he assumed his only option was the Apple store, so he took the phone in. The repair quote? $300. At the time, Chris was scraping by on unemployment checks, and that sum seemed astronomical. After a day of despair, Chris realized that he had an option: a shattered

CHRISTOPHER JOHNCKE, CEO smartphone screen should be no match for someone with the kind of engineering training that he had. Sourcing replacement parts online for $30, Chris got to work and handily repaired the phone himself. Chris only did the repair to save himself some money and his job search continued. Soon after, however, a friend heard of the successful fix and asked Chris to work on her phone. The networking spiraled out from there, and Chris realized he’d found a lucrative business, one that served the needs of the community and gave people an important option when faced with a busted device. Several busy months later, Chris decided that he had outgrown the trunk of his car and opened a brick-and-mortar repair store in Lake Park. Today, the iFixYouri family has expanded to multiple locations and over 80 employees, and we continue to grow. We repair thousands of smart devices on-location in Palm Beach County, Boston, and the greater Orlando area each month. In addition, our 7,600-square-foot warehouse space is a state-of-the-art repair depot for our corporate and website customers. We hope you never need iFixYouri, but if you find yourself with a broken smart device, remember that you have options. 

ex p e r t c o n t r i b utor NEWSOUTH WINDOW SOLUTIONS

The Right Windows Will Save You By Phil Stone, Affiliate President

Imagine your home with walls but no windows. Pretty bleak, right? Nobody wants that kind of darkness. On the other hand, while windows let in desirable sunlight, unless they are windows with high-performance Low-E glass, they also let in the sun’s burning heat. Since that heat conducts through glass even at night, your air conditioner struggles to fight it, while you struggle to pay skyrocketing utility bills. Think about this: Aluminum cookware, beverage cans and high-performance car radiators all use aluminum because of its ability to conduct hot and cold. If your window frames are made of aluminum, you have one of the most conductive metals on the planet between you and the Florida heat (or between you and the cold on some rare Florida nights). As that heat (or cold) continuously moves through your aluminum frames, you can find yourself in an endless (losing) battle with high utility costs. High-performance windows can solve that. Savings of 35% on cooling and heating costs are normal. Of course, not even the most energy-efficient window can address the energy costs of running your refrigerator, stove, washer/ dryer, and other appliances, so don’t expect a flat 35% off your bill. Still, high-performance windows will have a substantial impact. Speaking of impact, there’s another huge benefit: Remember how you had to install or close your hurricane shutters to protect your windows from impact when Matthew threatened? Impact-rated windows not only protect your home from storm damage, but they also spare you

the hassle and darkness that come with “buttoning up” for a storm. In addition, they’re on guard 24/7/365, thwarting any intruders who hope to smash your windows and dash off with your valuables. Finally, as if all those benefits aren’t enough, imagine yourself enjoying the quiet when your new impact windows muffle the sounds of trains roaring down the tracks with whistles blaring, planes rumbling overhead (especially with all the recent changes in flight plans), and leaf blowers blasting next door. Impact windows can put a stop to practically all that noise! Every day you pay a price – and not just a monetary one – for aluminum-framed builder’s grade windows. NewSouth Window Solutions will save you – in more ways than one! Call us at 561.712.9000 or visit www.NewSouthWindow. com. 

b u s ine s s p ro fi le NEUROCORE

Physical Therapy for the Brain By Rob Trube, Vice President, Marketing & Growth

The brain is a powerful and complex organ that controls every aspect of our daily lives. Even the slightest imbalance in the brain’s electrical activity, or in its intricate communication networks, can create noticeable problems in day-to-day activities. You may find yourself struggling with stress, sleeplessness, anxiety, depression, migraines, memory or ADHD. The thing is, many of us accept feeling subpar because we don't know that there's a way to address this. Enter, Neurocore. While many people rely on medications to treat the above concerns, there is a safe, effective, drug-free alternative. It's called neurofeedback, and it’s like physical therapy for the brain. The Neurocore Brain Performance Center has specialized in neurofeedback and brain mapping since 2004. With over 10 years' experience, the company focuses solely on helping children and adults optimize their brains so they can function at their best. “We provide a proven solution that, unlike medication, doesn’t simply mask symptoms, but treats the underlying issue at its source: the brain,” says Neurocore CEO Mark Murrison. “We all struggle with something, whether it’s energy, mood, sleep, focus, anxiety or stress. At Neurocore, we work on strengthening the brain so symptoms are reduced or even eliminated.” 16

And with the statistics to back them up, it's hard to deny that what Neurocore does is pretty impressive. Eighty percent of people who complete the Neurocore program experience improved symptoms (for ADHD, depression and anxiety). Additionally, over 50 percent of patients no longer suffer from the condition that brought them to Neurocore in the first place. The company, which opened its first South Florida location last fall in Boca Raton, is proud to announce their newest location in Palm Beach Gardens. The Palm Beach Gardens Brain Performance Center features a state-of-the-art brain-training room with 17 stations, as well as cutting-edge neurofeedback and biofeedback technology. Neurocore also recently launched a Memory Bootcamp program designed to strengthen the aging brain. As part of the Neurocore program, all clients complete a comprehensive diagnostic assessment to measure brain connectivity and speed. This brain-mapping assessment serves as a baseline for developing personalized training for each client’s unique brain. Led by an expert team of neuroscientists, Neurocore’s team of clinical social workers and highly trained brain coaches work hand-in-hand with you to provide education and feedback along your journey to better brain health. 

Tackle the Bear Trap with a Summer Preview Membership By James M. Gelfand, General Manager, PGA National Members Club

There’s a new bear in town! PGA National Resort & Spa has unveiled a dramatic new statue at its entrance. The new statue replicates the already-famous Jack Nicklausdesigned “Bear Trap” on its acclaimed Champion Course. While the replica stands sentinel at the front of the resort, the original Bear Trap statue continues to welcome players on the mighty Champion and warn them that they are entering hole numbers 15-17, one of the most difficult three-hole stretches in golf. When tackling the course, be sure to note that PGA National has the distinction of being home to both the Leadbetter Golf Academy and Dave Pelz Scoring Game School. The resort’s off-site Estates Course also offers Every Ball Counts, the world’s first science-based, statistics-driven training system for golf improvement. Loft Golf will bring out the best in a player’s game with its custom PGA TOUR-level club fitting, and the new Bear Trap HD Indoor Training facility allows you to train with a PGA Tour professional no matter the weather conditions. The varying degrees of difficulty on all five private golf courses is matched

Uh-oh. Your once-vibrant and stunning Oriental rug is looking a little dirty and worse for the wear. Rover’s and Fluffy’s muddy paws haven’t done your sofa any favor, nor has Junior’s spilling his juice-box on the cushions. As for your tile grout – well, those charcoal lines used to be white, didn’t they? You thought the plumber fixed that pesky leak, but now your home is frankly smelling kind of funky – and what on earth are those weird little pink and black dots and spider-weblike discolorations blossoming on the bathroom wallpaper? Yikes! It’s 2am and your basement is flooded!

No matter which of these is your “uh-oh moment,” you can count on Padron Cleaning & Restoration to make things right again. For more than 30 years, the Padron family has specialized in practically every kind of cleaning. From gentle but effective cleaning that pampers rugs’ most fragile fibers and delicate dyes, to upholstery stain removal, to tile and

grout cleaning, to emergency services like mold detection and remediation, to restoration after fire, smoke, flood or other water damage, Padron has the knowledge, expertise, and experience to take you from “Uh-oh!” to “It’s all good!” Padron Cleaning and Restoration is a three-generation, family-owned and operated business started by Gervasio Padron in 1979. Whether your cleaning or restoration needs are commercial or residential, large or small, Padron will be there for you. And relax. Even if your “uh-oh” happens in the middle of the night, their 24-hour emergency services division has you covered. ex p e r t c o n t r i b utor EPIC ADVENTURES THERAPY

Feeling Down? Take a Hike. By Nicky Treadway

Despite our accessibility to beautiful beaches and local parks, we often overlook the multitude of FREE health benefits that the great outdoors affords. As humans become less connected with nature, we lose an essential health buffer. Time spent in nature is associated with reduced levels of stress, depression and anxiety; increased resilience and learning engagement, and improved self-esteem and capacity to engage socially. All of this can also have a huge positive impact on physical health. Such benefits can occur not only when we take a walk in the woods or are otherwise immersed in nature, but even as we look out the window at, or view photos of, natural scenes. One 2013 study investigated the impact of different types of images on stress recovery. Researchers discovered that participants who viewed nature scenes had higher activity of the parasympathetic nervous system than participants who had not. This “rest and digest” branch of the autonomic nervous system helps balance the activity of the sympathetic (“fight or flight”) branch. Newer research suggests that the more awe-inspiring the scene, the better. In a 2015 study, people who looked at scenes of awe-inspiring nature had an even greater increase in mood than those who viewed “mundane” nature scenes

www.shadesandmoreinc .com

such as parks and gardens. The awe-inspiring scenes also encouraged a more pro-social value orientation among participants. The sounds of nature appear to have similar benefits, according to a 2013 study showing that, when it comes to recovery from stressful situations, hearing recorded nature sounds has effects similar to those that occur when we view nature images. Researchers have also compared the effects of walking through a forest to walking through a city, revealing that “forest bathing,” as they call it, not only leads to decreased stress hormones, but actually increases the natural “killer” cells in the immune system, as well as the expression of anticancer proteins. These effects seem to suggest that humans have an inborn need to connect with nature. Our separation from nature has been relatively recent, and we have not adapted to this division. At EPIC Adventures, we believe that the growing disconnection with our natural environment exacerbates the escalating rates of depression and anxiety. We design our therapeutic work around the core idea that time spent in nature is valuable for optimal physical and mental health. 

Hemorrhoids By Ronald S. Zelnick, MD, FACS, ASCRS; Board-Certified

No one likes to talk about them, but millions of people worldwide suffer from hemorrhoids, enlarged, bulging blood vessels in and about the anus and lower rectum. External hemorrhoids develop near the anus and are covered by sensitive skin. Mild symptoms can be relieved by increasing fiber in the diet, avoiding excessive straining, taking warm baths and using anesthetic creams. However, if a blood clot develops in an external hemorrhoid, a painful swelling may occur. (It bleeds only if it ruptures.) Evacuation of the clot, performed under local anesthesia with a small incision, may bring immediate relief. Excision is the best method of permanent removal, and is necessary if clots repeatedly form, protruding hemorrhoids can’t be reduced, or persistent bleeding occurs. The surgery is done under anesthesia, usually as an outpatient procedure. Internal hemorrhoids develop within the anus beneath the lining. Painless bleeding and protrusion during bowel movements are the most common symptoms. However, severe pain can result if it protrudes from the anal canal and cannot be pushed back in. More severe symptoms of internal hemorrhoids may be

treated by rubber band ligation or by HET bipolar systems (Hetsystems.com), the newest treatment, which applies highenergy compression to internal hemorrhoids while a patient is under sedation. It can be done in combination with colonoscopy, and multiple hemorrhoids can be treated in one procedure. While the exact cause of hemorrhoids is unknown, our upright posture forces a great deal of pressure on the rectal veins, causing them to bulge. Aging, constipation, diarrhea, pregnancy, heredity, straining due to poor bowel function, overuse of laxatives, and spending long periods of time on the toilet may also be contributing factors. There is no relationship between hemorrhoids and cancer. However, because the symptoms of hemorrhoids (particularly bleeding) are similar to those of colorectal cancer, having symptoms investigated by a physician is imperative. If you are a hemorrhoid sufferer, today’s treatment options offer an excellent chance of relief. Ronald S. Zelnick MD is a board-certified colon and rectal surgeon. He is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons. His office is in Jupiter, and he may be reached at 561.575.7875. 
