June is a time of endings and beginnings. School adjourns for the summer, and the much warmer days signal the exciting onset of vacations, camps, and more outings at the pool and beach. We also celebrate Father’s Day in June. I lost my dad in 2013, but I still think about him every day. Although he is gone, I am fortunate that he left me with so many wonderful memories. After my mother passed away, he moved closer to me and my children, and I began to get to know him in a new way, from an adult perspective. When his dementia set in, I became his caretaker, and although those were challenging days, I feel fortunate that we had that time together. I got to see his true personality, his incredibly outgoing nature and wonderful sense of humor. The experience helped me move forward with a new appreciation for just how precious every single day is. Don’t wait until Father’s Day to let those important men in your life know how special they are to you. On a much lighter note, June is also a good time to look around your home to see what may be in need of some attention, especially with hurricane season beginning. Make sure you take the necessary precautions to protect your house, yard, and pool. You may even consider upgrading your windows or installing hurricane shutters, and if you have questions, you can always reach out to our sponsors. Enjoy your June!

The Life and Death of a Battery By Ryan Riley, Corporate Repair Manager
Because of modern society’s love of smartphones, most of us keep a watchful eye on battery levels. When a phone’s power level is getting low, life can become a rush to find an outlet to charge back up so we can return to our interconnected day. As cell phone batteries age, they lose ability to hold a charge, and our outlet search anxiety becomes more frequent. But did you know there is also a safety risk in carrying around a phone with an old battery? Old batteries can expand, damaging the device they were meant to power, causing it to heat up, and sometimes even explode. The Brief Life Story of a Battery Rechargeable batteries may run for a long time, but they do have a limited lifespan. iPhone batteries, for example, are good for roughly 600 charge cycles; after that, performance starts to degrade, necessitating a battery replacement. Sometimes a replacement is required much earlier, such as when the unit routinely fails to charge, gets noticeably warmer, or runs out of power quickly. What Causes Batteries to Explode? Cellphone batteries are lithium ion batteries, which differ from the alkaline AA’s you have in your cable remote.
Lithium-ion batteries are rechargeable and rely on the chemical lithium as their power source. Typically these are built directly into smartphones. Lithium-ions, a newer type of battery than the alkaline variety, allow quite a bit more voltage. However, this increased power also increases some possibilities for combustion. Cheap manufacturing, rough treatment or impacts, overheating, or improper charging process (determined by device software, as well as accessories) can sometimes lead to a thermal runaway which concludes with a literal bang. So How Do We Take Charge of Battery Life? Always use high quality charging accessories. Many modern phones provide notifications when charging blocks are not the proper voltage. Pay attention to them. They do this to get the best performance and quality out of your battery. Avoid the super discount junk chargers found in gas stations and opt to purchase quality accessories from specialized phone companies, like iFixYouri. Owners may choose to replace batteries themselves since spare batteries are sometimes available online at reasonable prices. However, the benefit of bringing your phone with the old battery intact to a professional repair company like iFixYouri is that you can be sure a high-quality battery is installed correctly and comes with a warranty.

S is for Snake – and Serendipity By Darla Parris Smallwood
How does a New York girl traumatized by a pet snake grow up to become the owner of a successful pet-sitting business in Jupiter, Florida? It’s not a riddle; it’s merely a question, one that unravels the serendipitous life story of Jeannine Sherman. As a child living in New City, Jeannine actually had all kinds of pets: dogs, gerbils, rabbits, birds, fish and turtles. (Cats would have surely joined the menagerie had Jeannine’s mother not been allergic.) It’s not a riddle; it’s merely a question, one that unravels the serendipitous life story of Jeannine Sherman. “One day he just bit me, and I was so upset that I’ve blocked him out – I don’t even remember his name. No more snakes after that!” says Jeannine. Although she clearly loved animals (snakes excluded after the famous incident), Jeannine had no early aspirations for animal-related career. Math came naturally and easily to her, so much so that when she was just a high school student, 8

she had already nailed down a part-time job keeping the books for New York company run by a woman named Netta. As luck would have it, Netta also happened to own a house in Jupiter (in the Bluffs), and she generously offered it as a vacation spot for Jeannine and her family for two weeks every year. “At first, my parents didn’t even believe me when I told them about Netta’s offer, but when they met her, she told them that, yes, that was one of the perks of the job. Every time we’d come down here, I’d say to my parents, ‘I’m going to live here someday.’” But after high school, Jeannine again put her mathematical talent to work, earning an accounting degree. At a college graduation party, she by chance sat across from couple who did pet sitting. Fascinated by every detail of their work, she talked to them for three hours. It sounded like a wonderful job. Could she do that too? Nah. There was no way she could earn enough money pet sitting to pay back her school loans.
Instead, Jeannine took an accounting job, going to work every day in an office at the World Trade Center. “I hated everything about my job,” says Jeannine. “Here I was, just 23-years old, already working crazy hours. I was miserable.” And then one day she ran into Netta. “You look terrible,” Netta told Jeannine. “Why don’t you come back to work for me? Maybe I’ll even open a Jupiter office. You can buy a house there and run it for me when I retire.” Although Netta’s plan never materialized, the encounter got Jeannine’s “Florida wheels” turning. In 2000, she attended a career fair and ended up moving to Jupiter and taking an accounting position at Office Depot in Delray Beach. Although she knew she wouldn’t remain in accounting forever, at least the job would get her to the Sunshine State. On her very first day at Office Depot, Jeannine met fellow accountant Scott Sherman, who had relocated to Florida from New Jersey in 1995. Jeannine still hadn’t found the career of her dreams, but she had found the place. And now, she had found the man. Of course, it took her a little time to realize that last part. When she and Scott first met, both were seeing other people, so it wasn’t until they were assigned to the same project in 2001 that they began dating. “The first time I walked into Scott’s office, I looked at his
book shelf and saw photos of his two dogs, and I thought, ‘Oh, my God, he’s cute and he loves dogs!’ And then my dog, who hated other dogs, met his dogs and got along great with them!’” What could Jeannine do but marry the guy? They set a wedding date in late 2002. Jeannine made no secret of the fact that once she and Scott were married, she didn’t plan to stay at Office Depot – or even in accounting. (Scott would eventually leave Office Depot too. Today he is Vice President of Finance for Quick Test, Inc. in Jupiter.) He supported Jeannine, agreeing that she should find something that would make her happier. But what? Then one day while Jeannine was sitting in her muchdespised cubicle at work, her mom (who by then had also relocated to Florida with Jeannine’s dad), called and told Jeannine about an ad she’d seen in the newspaper: Someone was selling a pet-sitting business called PGA Pet Pals, Inc. Jeannine was having another “OMG moment,” and she couldn’t wait to talk to Scott. For the first time, she shared with him the story about that graduation party where she’d met those pet-sitters. She and Scott quickly sharpened their Continued page 10

their pets the way you’d want your own to be treated.” And Jeannine should know. She, Scott, and their five-year-old son Zach have their own precious, energetic Lab/Weimaraner mix named Shadow and a Betta fish, Big Red. “Scott and I owe so much of where we are today to my high school boss, Netta. She has passed away now, but we will always love her for getting us here,” says Jeannine. ————————————————————————————————————— Do you have a story to share, or do you know a neighbor who does? pencils and came up with a plan to buy the business, not really believing the owner would accept their offer. But she did. Now the only fly in the ointment was that they’d have to get the current owner to stay on for a couple of extra weeks so that could go on their honeymoon. Darn, she’d never agree. But she did. Jeannine couldn’t be happier with her new career. “There’s nothing like the feeling of having pets run up to you because they’re so happy to see you, or like the feeling of giving peace of mind to their owners because you take care of

ex p e r t c o n t r i b utor DR. DAVID SHUTER, M.D.
Plastic Surgery without Surgery By Dr. David Shuter Even as plastic surgery becomes increasingly popular and effective, some people still rule out a trip to the operating room. People in this group may fear surgery or pain, have financial restraints, or simply not be healthy enough for surgery, perhaps due to age or medical status. Until the last decade or so, this group had limited treatment options, and therefore limited potential for improvement, but relatively new treatments have changed all that. There are three major categories of non-surgical treatments. The first and most popular is Botox. More formally known as a neurotoxin, Botox and its competitors have the ability to relax certain facial muscles, thereby minimizing lines and wrinkles. Most commonly used on the upper face and forehead, Botox creates a softening effect that can reduce “the angry look” and smooth skin in these areas. Treatments typically last approximately three months and can be repeated for maintenance as desired. Facial fillers constitute a second extremely popular treatment category. These materials can be injected into depressions and lines to fill out indentations and to smooth skin. There are many filler material options, depending on the facial zone and desirable material properties (e.g. thick vs. thin, shorter-term vs. semipermanent, reversible or not.) Each physician has favorites based upon facial area, experience, and patient expectations. Longevity depends upon material used and other factors, and can range from a few months to two years or more.
Reason

Direct skin treatments are the third major category, which offers numerous options depending upon patient desires. These can range from OTC creams and lotions, to medical grade products, to chemical peels, to lasers and other light-based therapies. Successful treatments can reverse sun damage and/or improve skin tone/color, elasticity, and overall skin quality. Choosing the best treatment requires consideration of many factors, including severity of problems, patient expectations, and cost. Once again, maintenance is critical, and improvements can be additive. Obviously, there are other treatments available as well. However, the above options are not only "tried and true" with strong scientific evidence of effectiveness, but also performed by the great majority of cosmetic physicians. Natural results are much better than a "too much" plastic look, and this should be discussed pre-treatment with your provider. Properly selected treatment, performed by a skilled and board-certified provider, can lead to great results and happy patients. You deserve the best. David Shuter, M.D. is a board-certified plastic surgeon with 25 years’ experience in the Jupiter area. He is the inventor of the Illumask, a home-based phototherapy mask, and he has been featured on TV and in national magazines and newspapers. Please call 561-743-0244 for a personal consultation with Dr. Shuter.

Two New iRISE2 Mentoring Programs By Darius Murray
The Center for Autism and Related Disabilities at Florida Atlantic University (FAU CARD), is proud to announce two new additions to our iRISE2 Mentoring Program. Under the guidance of an experienced female computer engineer, FAU CARD staff and trained iRISE2 mentors, this innovative program helps close the gender gap in technology while providing its club members with the opportunity to explore an interest in the STEM field. FAU CARD is proud to be an official host of Girls Who Code, an inclusive computer science club for creative and intellectually curious girls (ages 14-19) who have strong interest in art and computers, while also sharing a diagnosis of autism. With the use of best-practice tools, this club takes a unique approach: building social skills, while promoting independence, confidence and self-esteem during key developmental stages of social and emotional growth. This spring, coding is the common interest that will serve as a
basis for forming friendships and enhancing skills. Our second new program initiative within the iRISE2 Mentoring Program is a School-Based Group Mentoring Program at Renaissance Learning Academy (RLA) in West Palm Beach. RLA is a non-profit Palm Beach County charter high school serving students ages 14-21 with autism spectrum disorder. This program focuses on the development and strengthening of communication skills, utilizing the PEERS school-based curriculum. The club is held on Wednesdays bi-monthly from 1-2pm and runs until the end of the school year. The group-mentoring format provides students the ability to practice and apply their social skills with adults as well as peers. These programs are currently offered free to individuals registered with the Center for Autism and Related Disabilities. To learn more or become a mentor, please contact Darius Murray, iRISE2 Mentoring Program Coordinator at: 561.213.6936 or dmurra23@fau.edu.
