May is one of my favorite months. I celebrate my birthday, and Mother’s Day gives me an opportunity to thank all the women who have made such a difference in my life: my mom, my grandmother, my stepmother, and my mother-in-law – not to mention so many other female role models. I’m fortunate to call a number of women “Mom.” My mother graduated from high school at the age of 16 and began working for the United States Air Force. After she married my dad, she soon became a stay-at-home mom, raising four children. When I married at 21, I was given the gift of a second “mom.” My mother-in-law, Noreen, had three sons and enjoyed welcoming “daughters” to the family. When her son and I divorced, she never took sides and instead maintained our relationship and her involvement with her grandchildren. When my mom passed away in 2001, my relationship with Noreen became even more important. She was even there at my wedding when I remarried in 2009, supporting me unconditionally. An amazing grandmother to my children, she is also a friend and role model to me. My husband David’s mom and two stepmothers were also present at our 2009 wedding. I was blessed to meet three women, all so different from one another, who nevertheless all received me with the same welcoming open arms. Along with all these wonderful “moms,” I am fortunate to have a number of female peers who support and inspire me. In addition, Armed Forces Day and Memorial Day, also in May, remind us to pay respective tribute to those women and men who currently serve in the United States’ armed forces, and to those who gave their lives during service. This May, I hope we all take a moment to thank those whose dedication and support have enriched our lives. And remember: Summer will be here before we know it, so get out and enjoy your May!

Make Your Garage into a Garage Again By Jim Sisto

You pull into your driveway, push the button on the remote and the door goes up. But there’s not enough room to park your brand new convertible inside. Your garage has turned into a giant storage container, and now there’s no room for anything else. It’s time to get things rearranged so that you can park that beautiful machine where it belongs. You need organized storage for those golf clubs, power tools, and your surfboard. Not to mention the kids’ bikes, an array of cleaning supplies, and so much more. Having shelves and cabinets that provide appropriate storage and a perfect place for everything will open up that garage space so that it can be used for what it was intended to be: a safe spot to park your car.

The right accessories and custom cabinets not only create ideal storage for everything, they also reflect the inside of your home and your overall style. In addition, they can give you a work station for honey-do lists, with ample space left over for the kids’ sports equipment and all the other “stuff” in your life. Coming up with just the right design to make your garage an organized place that works well for everyone in the family can be tricky, but a professional can help you sort it all out. Let’s get together to give you the garage of your dreams – with plenty of room to park that shiny new convertible you’ve been dreaming of bringing home! Jim Sisto, founder of Able Closets, is a third generation woodworking craftsman with a work ethic and attention to detail that has been passed down through the generations. 

Insuring your life helps protect their future. It can also provide for today. I’ll show you how a life insurance policy with living benefits can help your family with both long-term and short-term needs. We put the life back in life insurance. CALL ME TODAY.

b u s ine s s p ro fi le PURITAN DRY CLEANERS

Where Friendliness Meets Cleanliness By Darla Parris Smallwood

When Bob Choi and his wife Leena Jun took the helm at Tequesta’s Puritan Dry Cleaners more than a decade ago, their mission was to transform the business, which had already effectively served area residents for more than 15 years, into something even better. That’s precisely what they’ve done. First, with the help of their marketing manager (Gary Marcus), Bob and Leena gave Puritan a “facelift,” compete with an updated logo and website, to bring the business into the 21st century and make their service more visible and accessible. Next, while customers had already come to expect excellent customer service from the family-owned business, Bob and Leena committed to make it even better, offering super-quick, convenient pick-up and delivery service to meet your every dry-cleaning need without your ever having to leave the comfort of your home. Of course, if you do venture out to visit Puritan, you’ll always be greeted with a smile and treated with the same friendly, efficient service. Speaking of friendliness, the Puritan team believes in being as kind to your garments and to the environment as they are to their customers. Local pioneers in eco-friendly dry cleaner practices, they were the first Palm Beach County dry cleaner to be lauded by the Green Cleaners’ Council as a Green-Certified Dry Cleaner. Puritan uses only the best solvents that are not only “kinder” to your clothes, but also to the environment. Their “wet-clean” method and organic dry cleaning solvents result in a 90% nontoxic process. What’s more, their hanger recycling program reduces waste and conserves resources. Bob and Leena, who got married just a week before taking over Puritan, live in Jupiter. They now have a five-

year-old daughter, Lydia, and a three-year-old son, Robert. “I grew up in California, but we love the weather, the relaxed atmosphere, and the people here,” says Bob. “This place is special because it’s where we started not just our business, but our family.” At Puritan, you can count on being welcomed and treated like a member of that family. Whether you require basic dry-cleaning services for clothing or bedding, shirt-finishing, couture/fragile item cleaning, wedding gown preservation, or precise tailoring and alterations, you can rest assured that Bob, Leena and their highly-trained team will take care of your needs with the utmost professionalism, and with customer service that’s friendly to you, your clothes, and the earth – including the beautiful Palm Beach County paradise that you call home. Call Puritan Dry Cleaners today at 561.746.1400, visit them online at puritandc.com, or stop in at 150 N. US 1 #20 in Tequesta. 

Traci Fichter & Dana Rymarz

co v e r s t o r y T R A C I F IC H T ER A N D DANA RYMAR Z

Another Day in Paradise By Darla Parris Smallwood

Traci Fichter and Dana Rymarz say they aren’t the kind of women who crave the spotlight. Nevertheless, when they drive down the local streets in their dad’s beautifully restored orange 1967 Firebird (perhaps with their mom and their kids in tow), it’s kind of hard not to notice them. But Traci and Dana don’t think of the car as a showpiece. Instead, it’s just another joyful reminder of the indomitable spirit of their late father, who lives on in everything that they do. The New Jersey sisters landed in Jupiter 10 years ago, thanks largely to Traci’s husband Guy, who, like so many others, yearned for the outdoor, beach and boating lifestyle. Although they already lived at a Jersey beach with its own undeniable charm, they could only enjoy it for a couple of months of the year. Traci was on board with the move, but only under one condition: “I said, ‘No way, unless Dana and 8

her family and our mom and dad come too!’” Convincing Dana and her husband Jim wasn’t that difficult. “We all loved New Jersey – still do – but our family loves biking and swimming and the outdoor lifestyle too…shoveling snow is no fun, and we thought it would be really nice to head to the grocery store or go out for coffee without our feet being cold,” Dana explains. Traci, Guy and their two children, now 19 and 16, moved to Canterbury. Dana, Jim and their young son, now 12, settled in Valencia. (Four years later, Dana and Jim’s second child would lay the family claim to being a South Florida native.) Nadine and Vinny, who had always been incredibly close with their daughters and their respective families, weren’t about to be left behind. Like Traci, they set up housekeeping in Canterbury.

“We all needed to be in walking distance of each other…we’re so close-knit… we’re truly a blended family,” say Traci and Dana, proving their point by literally finishing each other’s sentences. And their entire family quickly took to Jupiter life. “I call this my Jupiter bubble,” says Traci. “It’s the most beautiful place ever… People come to vacation here, but we get to live here. “Our dad always called it paradise,” Dana adds. In 2012, Vinny, just 68 years old, died of liver disease while awaiting a transplant. For Traci and Dana, the loss of their father, whom they describe as “an artist and entrepreneur with a huge personality” was devastating, but they found solace in compelling reminders of his magnificent, vibrant essence. “He was a huge car enthusiast. He probably restored 20+ cars just in our lifetime, including that Firebird. Now, whenever we drive it, we feel him here with us.” But that’s not the most important legacy that Vinny left his

girls. He had been a Manhattan clothing designer before he retired in Jupiter, and after his death, Dana looked through an old briefcase of his, searching for contact information for past colleagues they might need to notify of his passing. What she found instead was a tee shirt with “Beverly Hills” written on the front, and “Send me back” on other side. “I know it sounds crazy to some people, but I called Traci and said, “Dad wants us to send him back!” The two sisters agreed that this design their father had toyed with was indeed something special. They speculated Continued page 10

that the “Beverly Hills” part was probably just his nod to how his daughters used to love watching Beverly Hills 90210; the “send me back” part, however, really spoke to them. “Our dad was a person who insisted, even when we were kids, that we open our eyes to every day. He’d stop and say, ‘Look at that flower in the sidewalk crack.’” Says Dana. That tee shirt, they say, “sent them back” to those invaluable moments with their father, while reminding them of his overall perspective on life: to find and appreciate paradise wherever you are. The message was so important and so powerful, say Traci and Dana, that it even inspired them to launch a business called – what else? – Send Me Back. With the amazing and unwavering support of their mother, Traci and Dana now create custom designs on everything from – yes – tee shirts, to tote bags, caps, cell phone cases and koozies, to remind people of their own paradise, wherever it may be, and to transport them there, even if only through precious memories. (A portion of all proceeds go to organ donation through Donate Life America.) In addition, the sisters-turnedbusiness partners created Instagram and Facebook accounts (sendmebackparadise) featuring photos that promote finding the paradise around ourselves every day. Most important, however, that tee shirt empowered Traci and Dana to keep their father’s positive approach alive,

Social Opportunities for Adults on the Autism Spectrum: Access and Practice Matter By Alison B. Bourdeau, M.S.Ed., Clinical Support Specialist

The availability of social opportunities for adults on the autism spectrum is an incredibly timely topic. I am a clinician with FAU’s Center for Autism, where one of my areas of focus is social relationships for adults. I currently run two such social groups out of Northern Palm Beach County. One is specific to young women, while the other is a mixed-gender group. Access to social connection and networking scenarios that promote ecologically valid skill sets is vital for young adults, and I can personally testify to the many benefits of providing such opportunities. Unfortunately, access to these types of opportunities becomes more challenging as constituents age. Among schoolage children, the schools serve as a meeting point where those with disabilities and their non-disabled peers can

communicate, connect, and intermingle. Opportunities extend across several settings: the classroom, the lunchroom, as well as in extra-curricular activities. As children age, the impetus to interact and connect gradually becomes more self-directed and less adult-directed. At this point, individuals facing challenges in social communication and interaction often determine that the cost of potential rejection outweighs the benefits of social connection. Later, once the common ground of the school is lost, finding others with common interests (which provides the basis from which friendships typically begin) becomes even more difficult. Compare this situation to a blooming flower. As that flower opens up, its petals are less connected; they stretch out in different directions. Similarly, as children age, they become more interest-specific

and less connected. Those who have not already established relationships must now actively seek them out based upon common interests. Young adults attending high school or college still have that home base to work from, but for working adults, this may be more of a challenge. And here is a key reality: Access alone does not ensure there will be a connection. If the underlying skill set needed to foster a connection is not present and utilized, then every encounter will become just another missed opportunity. Providing meaningful, consistent opportunities for young adults to practice their skills of social communication and interaction in ecologically valid scenarios is therefore an essential goal. co mm u n i t y n e ws RESIDENTS WANTED

Your Community Magazine Wants YOU! Everybody has a story, and sometimes the most interesting ones come from people who don’t think they have much to tell. From work and community involvement, to hobbies, travel and other interests, the self-perceived “ordinary” things that make you distinctively you, are often, in others’ eyes, quite extraordinary. Our magazine enjoys helping bring neighbors together and fostering a closer-knit community by featuring residents of all ages, backgrounds, and interests. No one has to have rescued puppies from a burning building or bungee-jumped off the Empire State Building to be featured (though if you have, we definitely need to get you on an upcoming cover). We believe in the simple power of connections, of people getting to each other one resident or family at time. Help us tell the stories of those who make this community a great place to live, work, and raise a family. Volunteer to share your story, or nominate another resident or family to be highlighted. Whether it’s the proverbial new kid on the block or the long-timer who’s watched the community grow from the ground up, the neighbor who started the book or bridge club, or the mastermind behind that new beer tasting or belly dancing group – so many stories beg to be told! b u s ine s s p ro fi le i FIX YOUR i

It’s All about Options By Ryan Riley, Corporate Repair Manager

It’s all about options. Apple tries to shackle you into their ecosystem, forcing you into expensive service plans. They’ll threaten to cancel your warranty if you don’t repair the iPhone or iPad (that you paid for!) at their certified repair facilities. An old yarn that Apple likes to spin is that repair shops don’t know what they’re doing, that they use counterfeit parts, that they’re an absolute danger to you, your device, and your wallet. But this isn’t the case: They simply want to remove your options. iFixYouri is one such option that thrives despite Apple’s warning to the contrary. Since 2010, our technicians have been providing expert repair service for every make and model of smartphone, tablet and personal computer. From phones dropped in wet cement, to iPads that took a plunge from a five-story building, iFixYouri technicians have seen and repaired it all. But how did we get here? The iFixYouri story began in 2009, when our CEO and founder, Christopher Johncke, was laid off from his job as an engineer. During his disappointing job hunt, Chris broke his iPhone, his lifeline to the professional world. Like most people, he assumed his only option was the Apple store, so he took the phone in. The repair quote? $300. At the time, Chris was scraping by on unemployment checks, and that sum seemed astronomical. After a day of despair, Chris realized that he had an option: a shattered

CHRISTOPHER JOHNCKE, CEO smartphone screen should be no match for someone with the kind of engineering training that he had. Sourcing replacement parts online for $30, Chris got to work and handily repaired the phone himself. Chris only did the repair to save himself some money and his job search continued. Soon after, however, a friend heard of the successful fix and asked Chris to work on her phone. The networking spiraled out from there, and Chris realized he’d found a lucrative business, one that served the needs of the community and gave people an important option when faced with a busted device. Several busy months later, Chris decided that he had outgrown the trunk of his car and opened a brick-and-mortar repair store in Lake Park. b u s ine s s p ro fi le NEUROCORE

Physical Therapy for the Brain By Rob Trube, Vice President, Marketing & Growth

The brain is a powerful and complex organ that controls every aspect of our daily lives. Even the slightest imbalance in the brain’s electrical activity, or in its intricate communication networks, can create noticeable problems in day-to-day activities. You may find yourself struggling with stress, sleeplessness, anxiety, depression, migraines, memory or ADHD. The thing is, many of us accept feeling subpar because we don't know that there's a way to address this. Enter, Neurocore. While many people rely on medications to treat the above concerns, there is a safe, effective, drug-free alternative. It's called neurofeedback, and it’s like physical therapy for the brain. The Neurocore Brain Performance Center has specialized in neurofeedback and brain mapping since 2004. With over 10 years' experience, the company focuses solely on helping children and adults optimize their brains so they can function at their best. “We provide a proven solution that, unlike medication, doesn’t simply mask symptoms, but treats the underlying issue at its source: the brain,” says Neurocore CEO Mark Murrison. “We all struggle with something, whether it’s energy, mood, sleep, focus, anxiety or stress. At Neurocore, we work on strengthening the brain so symptoms are reduced or even eliminated.” 16

And with the statistics to back them up, it's hard to deny that what Neurocore does is pretty impressive. Eighty percent of people who complete the Neurocore program experience improved symptoms (for ADHD, depression and anxiety). Additionally, over 50 percent of patients no longer suffer from the condition that brought them to Neurocore in the first place. The company, which opened its first South Florida location last fall in Boca Raton, is proud to announce their newest location in Palm Beach Gardens. The Palm Beach Gardens Brain Performance Center features a state-of-the-art brain-training room with 17 stations, as well as cutting-edge neurofeedback and biofeedback technology. Neurocore also recently launched a Memory Bootcamp program designed to strengthen the aging brain. As part of the Neurocore program, all clients complete a comprehensive diagnostic assessment to measure brain connectivity and speed. This brain-mapping assessment serves as a baseline for developing personalized training for each client’s unique brain. Led by an expert team of neuroscientists, Neurocore’s team of clinical social workers and highly trained brain coaches work hand-in-hand with you to provide education and feedback along your journey to better brain health. 

y o u r h e a l t h S P ON SORED BY J U P ITER MEDICAL SPECIAL ISTS

Hemorrhoids By Ronald S. Zelnick, MD, FACS, ASCRS; Board-Certified

No one likes to talk about them, but millions of people worldwide suffer from hemorrhoids, enlarged, bulging blood vessels in and about the anus and lower rectum. External hemorrhoids develop near the anus and are covered by sensitive skin. Mild symptoms can be relieved by increasing fiber in the diet, avoiding excessive straining, taking warm baths and using anesthetic creams. However, if a blood clot develops in an external hemorrhoid, a painful swelling may occur. (It bleeds only if it ruptures.) Evacuation of the clot, performed under local anesthesia with a small incision, may bring immediate relief. Excision is the best method of permanent removal, and is necessary if clots repeatedly form, protruding hemorrhoids can’t be reduced, or persistent bleeding occurs. The surgery is done under anesthesia, usually as an outpatient procedure. Internal hemorrhoids develop within the anus beneath the lining. Painless bleeding and protrusion during bowel movements are the most common symptoms. However, severe pain can result if it protrudes from the anal canal and cannot be pushed back in. More severe symptoms of internal hemorrhoids may be

treated by rubber band ligation or by HET bipolar systems (Hetsystems.com), the newest treatment, which applies highenergy compression to internal hemorrhoids while a patient is under sedation. It can be done in combination with colonoscopy, and multiple hemorrhoids can be treated in one procedure. While the exact cause of hemorrhoids is unknown, our upright posture forces a great deal of pressure on the rectal veins, causing them to bulge. Aging, constipation, diarrhea, pregnancy, heredity, straining due to poor bowel function, overuse of laxatives, and spending long periods of time on the toilet may also be contributing factors. There is no relationship between hemorrhoids and cancer. However, because the symptoms of hemorrhoids (particularly bleeding) are similar to those of colorectal cancer, having symptoms investigated by a physician is imperative. If you are a hemorrhoid sufferer, today’s treatment options offer an excellent chance of relief. Ronald S. Zelnick MD is a board-certified colon and rectal surgeon. He is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons. His office is in Jupiter, and he may be reached at 561.575.7875. 
