Well, luckily Yesware decided to contribute by compiling numerous studies they conducted. Yesware’s team came up with 10 empirical ways to boost your open rates.

Emails remain an important part of business operations. Cold emails can be the fastest way to win new business, and can also be the fastest way to lose it. Experts say that it all boils down to the subject line - a crappy subject will mean worse open rates. However, determining a subject line’s effectiveness will mean going over several elements. It can be time-consuming and without a ‘Golden Principle’ to essentially bypass much of this tediousness, how then can marketers and sales professionals make this easier?

Before we hit the facts and figures, you can access the full report with the complete details here. Since we don’t want to take away from the entirety of the report, we’ll only be discussing these tips in quick summary. Hit The Boost!

1. Use Numbers in The Subject Line 2. Optimize Your Subject Line for Mobile and Keep It Between 1 - 5 Words Yesware analyzed some 115 million emails and observed that subject lines that contained numbers, on average, had higher open and reply rates. In a recent email template study that they conducted, Yesware’s team analyzed around 262,518 email templates and found that the ones with the best open and reply rates were those whose subject lines contained only 1 - 5 words. Clear and concise subject lines seem to work best here.

3. Appeal to Emotion: Curiosity, Empathy, FOMO Write your subject lines in such a way that it would appeal to any of these three emotions. Relating to something activates a part of the brain called the Insula. It’s a good idea to address pain points in your subject line. Check out Yesware’s report for some good examples. 4. Ask Questions Questions pique curiosity. Have you ever wondered why ‘Hooks’ are so effective? In their cold email study, Yesware found that question subject lines experienced around 10% higher opens.

5. Use Language That Shows Immediacy Email subject lines that imply same-day send times experience higher open and reply rates. Communicating with a sense of urgency works, but avoid spammy statements like ‘Act Now’ or ‘Now Only’. 6. Avoid Words & Punctuation Marks That Trigger Spam Filters You’d want to avoid tags and descriptions that might have your emails run through the spam filter. Avoid using ALL CAPS and multiple exclamation points. Yesware has a handy table of trigger words in their report.

7. 3x Personalize Being more personal has been shown to improve open rates - studies show that by including a recipient’s name, emails are 26% more likely to be opened. Address your emails to individuals, not for en-masse sending. 8. Indicate Forwards and Replies Based on one of their studies, recipients have shown a greater inclination to open emails whose subject lines contain the strings ‘Fwd’ or ‘Re’. This builds confidence for the recipient as it likely points to a prior conversation the sender already made.

9. Give Relevant Resources and Provide Value It’s about giving at this point. This is where you practice the social norm of reciprocity - if you want value, you have to first give value. 10. Avoid ‘Negative’ Phrases You’d want to steer clear of these phrases that would decrease your open and reply rates. Negative phrases are often statements that recipients often perceive as repetitive, therefore, unimportant. Refer to Yesware’s report for some examples.

Yesware offers an abundant amount of insights. While various studies and figures will help steer you in the right direction, trial and error are what will tell you what ultimately works and what doesn’t. Either way, this report is definitely worth looking at, and if you ’ re prioritizing email marketing, then this resource should help optimize your approach. The Wrap
