BOARD OF DIRECTORS

Welcome Whether you are a new resident or a visitor, we are proud to introduce you to Gaston County and a wide variety of activities available here. In a single day, you can enjoy the beauty of a world renown botanical garden, learn the history of our area at one of several museums, get your heart racing on a mountain bike course, and run the rapids at one of the world’s finest whitewater centers. If you’re drawn to water, few communities offer more water access than those of the Montcross area. The Catawba River marks the eastern border of Gaston County flowing through Mount Holly and Belmont, allowing for beautiful riverfront parks, marinas and waterfront communities. West of Belmont and Mount Holly, flowing through Lowell, McAdenville and Cramerton is the South Fork River, smaller than the Catawba, but ideal for kayaks, canoes, and fishing. The spectacular 380-acre Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden is located along the South Fork River in Belmont, featuring a five-story orchid conservatory, a children’s garden, and much more. The cities and towns of the Montcross area along Gaston County’s eastern border offer residents the best of small-town living, with easy access to the attractions of the big city next door.

Charlotte Douglas International Airport is less than a 10-minute drive from Belmont and Mount Holly. In just 20 minutes, eastern Gaston visitors and residents can be in uptown Charlotte for a sporting event, for a play or concert, or just to have a dinner. When the big city isn’t calling, visitors and residents of the Montcross area communities have lots to enjoy in their own backyard. Unique independently owned restaurants and specialty shops line Main Street in every town, and parks, greenways and other outdoor recreation opportunities are abundant. Our public schools are outstanding, and we also have excellent private school options. We have Gaston College, a two-year community college, and the four-year Belmont Abbey College. If you’re considering our area as your next home we hope this publication will be a valuable tool in helping you become acquainted with Gaston County and its communities. When you arrive, please let us know you’re here. We invite you to attend our events and let the Montcross Area Chamber help you connect quickly to sources for services and to new friends. Our website has a lot of valuable information. You can sign-up to receive our emails, which will keep you updated on happenings in the business community. You’ll also find our Chamber staff eager to welcome you, answer questions and provide information.

MONTCROSS AREA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

Dear newcomers and new businesses to the Montcross Area - the Economic Gateway to Gaston County, Serving both the businesses and communities of eastern Gaston County, our Chamber has been providing value and strengthening the economies of our dynamic growing region since 1960. Operating as the Belmont Chamber at that time, we primarily served one community. Now we have evolved and grown to serve a wider region that includes the communities of Belmont, Cramerton, Lowell, McAdenville, Mount Holly, Ranlo and Stanley. Along with a bolder vision, a new name was announced in 2008 to reflect the expected growth and service to these cities and towns. Derived from the name of the 1,100-acre retail, residential and commercial Montcross project being developed along I-85, between the Catawba and South Fork rivers, “Montcross Area Chamber of Commerce” was chosen as the new name. Partners in the Montcross construction project embraced the idea of the Chamber adopting the name. At that time, close to 40% of the Chamber’s membership had an address other than Belmont. This holds true today with members in every city and town in Eastern Gaston County, plus Gastonia, Charlotte, Lake Wylie, and many others. This enormous project continues being developed today on land owned by the Southern Benedictine Society at Belmont Abbey College, Pharr Yarns, R.L. Stowe Mills and Parkdale Mills with more than 14,000 jobs projected to be created over the next 30 years. Our strategic location, across the Catawba River from Charlotte, NC, one of the fastest growing metro regions in our country, and one exit away from one of the fastest growing international airports, puts us close to major league sports, and major league culture and attractions, including the U.S. National Whitewater Center. Our unique cities and towns, each with their own identity and charm, offer great places to live surrounded by miles of trails to hike and ride as well as easy access to rivers for boating, kayaking and canoeing. Today, as we celebrate the end of 2021, and the beginning of 2022, we have much to be thankful for. Our small businesses and the communities we serve have shown true grit and courage during this impactful pandemic. The greatest assets we have as a purpose-driven organization are our chamber members and partner cities and towns. One thing we have learned during these challenging times is our Chamber’s mission must be more closely aligned with our cities and towns. How successful and how well we lead this dynamic Montcross area, will rest on how well we partner and collaborate with our public sector leaders and other organizations. And how we make diversity, equality and inclusion a major factor in the successful growth of our small businesses and our economic growth. A major step in helping to create our future is through our recently announced initiative “Montcross Emerge”. The purpose of Montcross Emerge is to promote and support our small businesses and communities as we emerge from the impact of Covid-19. Montcross Emerge exists to serve this purpose practically and personally through a team of industry leading professionals who specialize in marketing, efficiency, culture, economic growth and leadership development. The backbone of our nation is the small business owners and our communities are no different. The small business owners and local entrepreneurs will influence and craft the growth and impact of our local communities. The Montcross Area Chamber exists to serve and add value to them. Our goal is to be recognized as essential, not just relevant. Welcome. We would love to have you be part our chamber and help take us to the next level with your leadership experience.

Preserving the Past, Reimagining the Future

Chronicle Mill, the newest addition to Belmont, is an adaptive re-use project by Armada Hoffler Properties. This distinctive space will bring additional retail, restaurant, residential, and coworking space to the heart of downtown. Founded in 1902 by textile pioneers R.L. Stowe, Sr., and Samuel Pinckney Stowe, Chronicle Mill was Belmont’s first textile mill, transforming it from a sleepy, rural town into a textile hub. It was named after Maj. William Chronicle, a Revolutionary War hero who lived nearby and was killed in the Battle of Kings Mountain, a turning point in the war. Initially powered by steam, Chronicle Mill eventually introduced electrical power to increase productivity and expanded the facility over the years. Most workers lived near the mill and their children attended Chronicle Mill School.

Located off Catawba Street just two blocks from Belmont’s bustling Main Street, Chronicle Mill will bring a unique residential and retail experience to complement the city’s small-town feel. Additionally, it provides easy access to I-85, Charlotte Douglas International Airport, Uptown Charlotte, and the U.S. National Whitewater Center. Armada Hoffler Properties, based in Virginia Beach, VA, is dedicated to preserving the past and reimagining the future with this restoration and development project. While conserving several elements like the structure, reclaimed wood, and doors, Chronicle Mill will have similar features to the building’s original architectural design. Construction commenced in 2021. Pre-leasing will begin in spring 2022 for apartments consisting of studio to two bedroom units. For more details on leasing and to sign up for updates, visit www.thechroniclemill.com.

rom repurposing existing buildings to fine-tuning plans for new facilities, the City of Belmont is well-positioned for an exciting future of growth. “We’re really building this recreational hub,” City Manager Adrian Miller said, citing numerous upcoming plans including a recreation center, a dog park and an outdoor skateboard facility. Many of these plans have been hatched from the city’s new administration building, which previously served as the public works headquarters. While completing a renovation that included more energy-efficient features and windows to overlook the Catawba River, the building officially opened in late 2020.

On the grounds of the facility, now called “City Works,” plans are underway for both a skateboard and dog park. “Many people live in apartments and town homes with small backyards and need a place to walk their dogs,” Miller said. “It’s also another great place for dog owners to interact.” Design is also complete on a new recreation center, with construction slated to begin at the end of 2021. That facility, situated along the river, will include three full-sized gymnasiums as well as several classrooms and an indoor walking track. These as well as the city’s existing park facilities will help accommodate a growing population as Belmont becomes a popular option for Charlotte residents looking to move a little further out of the city. “We are on their radar,” Miller said. “If you can work from home, or frankly from anywhere…then we offer a fantastic quality of life and a great place to live.” A bustling downtown filled with restaurants, local breweries and shops also makes this east Gaston County city a popular destination for visitors. While the pandemic initially posed unique challenges for Belmont businesses, Miller said support from local residents helped merchants brave the storm. Now, traffic to shops and restaurants is as strong as ever. “We actually added businesses during the

pandemic,” he said. “Our downtown is absolutely slammed.” While strolling through the streets, pedestrians may also notice a redesigned logo and updated streetlight banners that were created as part of the city’s recent branding campaign. This fall, the new Belmont Middle School campus welcomed its first class of students, while local leaders begin to consider options for renovating and repurposing the school’s former site. “It also offers a redevelopment opportunity for the old middle school, which is in the heart of downtown Belmont,” Miller said. Each of these services and facilities offer a great variety for the growing number of residents and visitors the city looks forward to welcoming throughout the year. As workers adjust to some pandemic-inspired office environments that may be in place indefinitely, Miller said local home designs and creative downtown co-working spaces are offering great options. “Homebuilders have accelerated their building and have adapted their plans to include a home office,” he said. “Marketing us as a place to live while you’re working remotely is something that’s going to stick around for a while.” a

The Gaston 2035 Comprehensive Plan was adopted in 2016 and serves as a "blueprint" for how and where the community should grow and considers issues such as land use, neighborhoods, mobility, community facilities, infrastructure and economic development. The process involved a coordinated effort involving Gaston County Board of Commission, Gaston County Planning Board, Steering Committee Members, Gaston County Planning Staff, N Focus Planning & Design Inc., and most importantly, the citizens of Gaston County who attended meetings and submitted valued input. The Plan looks at the interconnectedness between transportation, utilities, recreation, economic development, land uses and the like. One of the primary methods of gathering citizen or public input was with the citizen input meetings. After ten (10) extensive public involvement meetings, a thorough analysis of current and future trends, and assessment of the county’s issues and opportunities, this official long-range guide for the future was established. ith strong ties to its community and a history of highlighting outdoor spaces, Mount Holly officials consider a local green space as the perfect location to honor safety officers and a hometown hero. The Mount Holly Police Department Memorial Plaza will include several bronze statues, an eternal flame and a wall of recognition to honor those who have helped protect the city. Most of the plaza is scheduled to be completed by December 11, 2021 to commemorate the end of watch for Officer Tyler Herndon, who was killed in the line of duty on that day in 2020. “Tyler was a great young man, a promising person. We lost just a great person that had so much potential,” Police Chief Don Roper said of Herndon, who was killed during a response to a call of a reported break-in at a local car wash.

Following his death, Roper said local citizens flooded his department with support. For that reason, the memorial will also be a tribute to the strong ties Mount Holly residents share with their law enforcement officers. One of the statues to be included in the memorial will be an officer holding a child’s hand. “Our community has really just stepped up and taken on the role of supporter,” Roper said. “In our minds, it’s going to tell a story about our community.” The plaza fits well with Mount Holly’s focus on providing entertaining and engaging events and areas while also working to maintain its small-town feel. A downtown concert series includes nearly a dozen bands covering a wide variety of music, from the Eagles to Dave Matthews to Motown. While enjoying the music or strolling by the shops and restaurants, decorative lighting helps set a relaxed and inviting tone. “People are really looking forward to coming across the river,” City Manager Miles Braswell said of Charlotte residents who may consider moving to Mount Holly. While planning for the city’s growth, he said he and other local leaders make sure to always consider “how do we make sure it still feels like Mount Holly?” Improving and expanding the city’s large network of outdoor trails is a major part of future growth plans, Braswell said. A new mountain biking trail includes nearly three miles to ride and an addition to the greenway will tie into River Street Park. In recent years, residents have shown an increased interest in local art, and a new $50,000 arts initiative will provide even more opportunities for those types of projects, Braswell said. The recent renovation of an older building in the north Main Street area revealed an older mural under a peeling concrete finish, so plans are in place to revive that piece of the city’s history.

“We should really see some nice art come out this year,” Braswell said. All of these planned paths and projects lead Mount Holly back to where Roper hopes his city will always be: a community that supports each other with any eye toward the future. He said he imagines a young family stopping to visit the Memorial Plaza while enjoying a stroll along the greenway. Parents can read the names of those remembered and honored at the site, while their young children study the statues. “Thirty years later, this girl is a Mount Holly Police Chief,” Roper said, revealing his vision for a plaza that both honors Herndon and helps the city heal and grow in the future. a

rom expanding bike paths and walking trails that link neighborhoods and nearby cities to preserving historic landmarks and maintaining strong community ties, connectivity fuels the focus of the Town of Cramerton. “Over the past decade-plus, we took a look to the past and how can we look to things that were positive in the past and link to the future,” said City Manager David Pugh. Cramerton’s past as a mill town steeped in community spirit has helped guide many of the moves town residents and leaders have made, including recent renovations to Rocky Branch and Central Parks. At Central Park, trails meandering along a gentle stream as well as a community garden give visitors plenty of opportunities to visit and exercise, while expanded bike trails at Rocky Branch Park now connect the town to nearby Belmont. “Central Park is fully complete and that looks absolutely amazing,” Pugh said. “You are able to use walkability and bike-ability to get to both Cramerton and Belmont.”

Live Music At Centennial Center

Several pieces of outdoor-inspired art along the trails at Rocky Branch provide another great attraction along the cityconnecting trail. While these types of amenities are always popular in this recreation-centered town, they became especially important during the pandemic. “We were always able to say, ‘Hey, you can always get outside, you can always use our great trails,’” Pugh said. “That’s absolutely something we continue to promote as something people can use.” Beyond the trails, an exciting community project has the potential to provide the town another important connection to its past. Local residents and government leaders are teaming up with a Cramerton property owner to preserve a historic schoolhouse in the town’s Baltimore community. Thanks to their efforts, the 900-square-foot building once scheduled to be destroyed as part of a controlled burn with the fire department is now listed as a historic landmark with future plans for a museum. “This is the last one-room African American schoolhouse in Gaston County,” said Wendy Cauthen, wife of Mayor Will Cauthen who is working with the

building’s owner, Fred Glenn, to get the structure preserved. Glenn was raised in the Baltimore community, and his mother attended the school. “We’re just trying to bring it back to what it was. It can be used as a small museum of the neighborhood,” Cauthen said. “It goes along with pride in our past, our whole town motto.” One of the first steps involved getting the building listed as a local historic property, a move unanimously approved by the Town of Cramerton and the Gaston County Board of Commissioners. This designation will provide guidelines for any structural changes proposed in the future as well as promote its historical preservation. The historic Baltimore school project stands as another great example of local residents eager to come together for a common goal, Pugh said. “Cramerton has pretty much always had that community spirit,” he said. Cauthen said she and Glenn have become great friends as they work together to plan a big future for the small schoolhouse. “We’ve been working as a team on this,” she said. “Cramerton’s just such a great place. I can’t imagine living anywhere else.” a

eekly wind-downs at downtown hang-outs and local leaders that work well together are helping the City of Lowell grow while maintaining its small-town charm. “It’s real important that you can work closely, that everybody meshes, that you can work as a team,” Mayor Sandy Railey said. A key step in that direction included hiring a new city manager with strong local ties, she said. In late 2020, the city named Scott Attaway, who previously served as planning director, to the municipality’s top post. “It’s probably one of the best things that could ever happen,” Railey said of Attaway, who had worked closely under Lowell’s previous manager. Successfully managing and planning for future growth is a top priority for the city’s administration and leaders. While the pandemic presented its own challenges for supporting local businesses and keeping residents healthy and safe, new construction continued to thrive in existing neighborhoods. “We’re getting hit up a good bit from smaller developers

and contractors,” Attaway said, listing plans for nearly 50 townhomes and more than 100 single family residences in existing subdivisions. “We’re seeing the infill development continue.” To support this growth, Lowell has added two additional positions for police officers and is working on a master plan for its parks and recreation department. While plans are already in place to add a segment to the Carolina Thread Trail, Attaway said the pandemic highlighted the need for maintaining and expanding outdoor recreation opportunities. “What the pandemic showed us is that we don’t have enough recreation in this country,” he said, adding that an important component of the plan will include maintenance of existing facilities. “How to take care of what you’ve got is one of the important things for my council to see once we get this Mayor Sandy Railey completed,” Attaway said. For indoor activities, the city has plans to renovate the bottom floor of the community center. Located just down the street from city hall and adjacent to Bob Bolick Park, the center is an affordable rental option for birthday parties, family reunions, baby showers and other mid-sized social gatherings and events, Railey said. “I’m just excited about getting that done,” she said. “It’s going to be a really nice facility.” City leaders are also working with Gaston County officials to provide increased pedestrian and ADA access at the local library branch. While Lowell may often be abuzz with a busy slate of upcoming projects, local businesses also provide plenty of options for taking a break and visiting with neighbors and friends. One local café, for example, worked to

provide a safe outdoor gathering place during the pandemic that developed into a popular weekly routine for many. “Fryeday Coffee Roasters has been a relief for a lot of people,” Attaway said, speaking of the business’ weekly live music schedule. “That was pretty good to coast us through and get people downtown.” For Railey, weekly visits to downtown offered both a chance for the busy mayor to unwind and catch-up. “It’s so neat to go there, sit out back, listen to the music and talk and have a few drinks,” she said. “It’s like you can meet with your friends and figure out what’s going on.” a

GATEWAY85 A new 365-acre site in Lowell and Gastonia is being developed with 3.6 million square feet of industrial space. Located along I-85, the GATEWAY 85 project involves the partnership of two municipalities and various agencies in Gaston County. Construction is well underway at the site with tenant space expected to be available by the end of 2021. When completed, it will be one of the largest industrial parks in the Charlotte region.

hether by foot, kayak or car, the town of McAdenville includes several paths for welcoming visitors into this thriving east Gaston community as well as plenty of reasons to make them stay. The new headquarters of a regional environmental organization combined with an active, civic-minded community means this town offers something for nearly every type of visitor or future resident. McAdenville may be well-known throughout the region and country as “Christmas Town USA,” Council Member Reid Washam said, “but I feel like we’re becoming a destination for outdoor recreation.” In mid-2021, the Catawba Riverkeeper Foundation celebrated the groundbreaking of its new headquarters in a renovated downtown building along the banks of the South Fork River. Months earlier, the Riverkeepers also renovated a building on the banks of the river at the head of the South Fork Trail along the Carolina Thread Trail and are using that facility to offer kayak rentals, public information and retail sales. “It’s just a great opportunity for us to meet people who are into the outdoors,” said John Searby, Riverkeeper Executive Director. From the boathouse, visitors can begin a 2-mile hike along the Carolina Thread Trail to nearby Lowell. The Riverkeepers also offer kayaks for a variety of expeditions, including a float trip to Cramerton’s Goat Island or shuttle rides for a longer, guided trip back downriver from Spencer Mountain. 26

Plans for the nearby Riverkeeper headquarters, which will be the anchor tenant in a 20,000-square-foot space along Main Street, include offices, a water testing lab, and a classroom for hosting summer camps, community lectures, and a wide variety of other events, Searby said. “Just having classroom space is huge for us,” Searby said. The facility will also house a taproom, showcasing a wide variety of local beers brewed solely from water along the basin. As with many projects in the town, the Riverkeeper Foundation benefited from the help of the McAdenville Woman’s Club, which sponsored the sign at the boathouse. From helping to maintain the local greenway to sprucing up the elementary school to sponsoring a college scholarship, club members volunteer time and help raise funds to support a wide variety of projects throughout McAdenville.

Each year, members organize a 5K road race, held the evening of the first Saturday after Thanksgiving. With a path winding through the town’s famous Christmas lights, the race typically sells out months in advance. Proceeds then help to support the club’s many projects as well as the local YMCA. “We’ve become neighborhood race experts,” said Club President Ashley Westmoreland. “We improve every year.” While these exciting annual events as well as a full menu of hikes, river trips and other outdoor activities offer plenty of reasons to bring visitors into downtown McAdenville, Council Member Washam knows there are plenty more to make them stay. From bakery treats to gifts shops to restaurants, the town offers friendly merchants who welcome visitors and remember residents. CHRISTMAS TOWN USA With a tradition that began in 1956 when the local Men’s Club decided to decorate a number of trees with Christmas lights, McAdenville is now known as “Christmas Town USA”. Leading Healthcare Provider Is Building A New Hospital In Belmont

In May 2019, CaroMont Health announced plans to build the Belmont hospital, expand critical care services with construction of a four-floor tower at the main hospital in Gastonia, and complete several renovation and expansion projects in its medical group. The more than $300 million commitment was the largest in the history of Gaston County. These projects are aimed at expanding CaroMont Health’s clinical network to prepare for anticipated population growth across the region. As part of CaroMont Health’s commitment to the $300 million investment in new and expanded facilities in and around Gaston County over the next three years, construction has begun for CaroMont Regional Medical CenterBelmont and is scheduled to open in mid-2023. In a partnership with Belmont Abbey College, CaroMont Regional Medical Center-Belmont will be located off I-85 near exit 27 at Highway 273. The 28-acre medical campus will include a 66-bed hospital (54-acute care beds and 12 observation beds), 16-room emergency department, labor and delivery unit, operating rooms and surgical capabilities, and robust diagnostic testing and imaging services. Also planned is a medical office building and parking deck. Early estimates suggest the hospital alone could create as many as 150 new jobs in the region and see as many as 16,000 patients in the first year. “We are building more than a hospital, more than a medical campus, we are building the future,” said Chris Peek, President and CEO of CaroMont Health. “This will be the site of so much hope and promise – where new life is welcomed, where patients heal and where the next generation of healthcare professionals find their purpose.”

65 Years of Holy Angels: LOVING, LIVING AND LEARNING INTO THE FUTURE

A desperate mother and her infant needed help. It was as simple as that. They turned toward their faith and the Sisters of Mercy in Belmont, NC, seeking a compassionate heart and helping hand. And in that moment, Holy Angels began. The year was 1955. Maria Morrow was mere weeks old when her overwhelmed mother left her in the care of the Sisters of Mercy. Baby Maria wasn’t expected to live beyond three months old following diagnoses of spina bifida and hydrocephalus among other paralyzing physical disabilities. But she did - and she didn’t just live beyond three months of age, or a year, or a few dozen years. Maria thrived until age 54! And in doing so, she shined a light on a need greater than herself. A need for loving, living and learning for the differently able. A need for Holy Angels.

Holy Angels celebrates 65 years of compassionate care for children, women and men like Maria. We serve an immensely vulnerable population of children and adults with intellectual disabilities and delicate medical conditions, offering physical, educational and emotional support. We provide specialized, round-the-clock service to the differently able in a setting focused on faith, love and kindness. Throughout these 65 years, our nonprofit organization has grown and changed in the most positive of ways. It began with one child and her unique care. Today, Holy Angels is a robust campus in Belmont, NC, that serves approximately 100 individuals at a time. We have group homes and relationships throughout the community, regional retail businesses that employ adults with special needs and numerous programs that support residents in addition to a dedicated, extensive network of staff, volunteers, families, advocates and donors. Holy Angels has a strong foundation, 65 years in the making. Now, as we look toward the end of 2021 following a tumultuous pandemic year, we prepare for another 65 years of serving the differently able. Our most crucial task is, as it always has been, meeting the changing needs of our children and adults, including our aging adults. This focus has long remained central to our mission and Holy Angels will continue to rise to the occasion, putting these delicate needs first and foremost. This means amplifying our services, updating and expanding our facilities, increasing our community outreach, strengthening our role as a business and nonprofit and growing as an employer of choice in the region. We’ll continue to seek ongoing financial support, especially in light of healthcare funding changes that will significantly impact our organization. One of our biggest challenges will be maintaining pace with the changes in our healthcare system, and we look toward tackling these shifts - today and in the years or decades ahead - with creativity and ingenuity as we provide comprehensive, beneficial services and programs. From financial stability to recruiting a quality workforce and consistently providing superior compassionate care to our residents, Holy Angels carries its mission from our first 65 years to our next 65 years and beyond. Our needs are plentiful, but our hearts are bigger and we are eternally grateful for the successes and support that led us here and the love that will carry us into the future.
