State-of-the-art Dubai launches facial recognition for seamless airport experience

ubai, UAE: Dubai Police has recently acquired the legendary Toyota Supra to be added to its globally acclaimed fleet of exotic super cars. The inclusion of the 2021 GR Supra in the aweinspiring fleet, which is used to promote the Dubai Police both locally and internationally, reinforces its position as one of the most sought after sports cars since its return after a 17-year wait. The Supra was provided by Al-Futtaim Automotive, exclusive distributor of Toyota in the UAE, and a long-term partner of Dubai Police. Living up to the heady expectations of some of the world’s most devoted enthusiasts, the Supra with a 3.0L powerhouse hits the 100km/h mark in just 4.1 seconds and easily accelerates to an electronically limited top speed of 250km/h. According to local media reports, among Dubai Police’s fleet of exotic supercars are the Lamborghini Aventador, Ferrari FF, Aston Martin One-77, Lykan HyperSport, Bugatti Veyron, Audi R8, Bentley Continental GT, Bentley Bentayga, BMW i8 and the BMW M6 Gran Coupé.

ubai, UAE – Now, travelling from Dubai International Airport is a breeze – literally. This city that never has a dull moment recently launched a fast-track airport control system that requires nothing less than showing your face in front of a camera at the check-in counter and voila! You’re ready to fly. Using the most advanced biometric technology which combines facial and iris recognition, you can check in, consummate immigration procedures, be in the airport lounge for some coffee and on to the boarding gates without having to show your passport at every step of the way. And if this is not exciting enough, latest word has it the Dubai International Airport will, in the future, be doing away with immigration terminals – that most cumbersome part of travelling.

UBAI: Among top casual dining destinations in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) these days is Off The Hook Seafood Restaurant, which in recent years has expanded so fast almost to the point of becoming ubiquitous. The restaurant, which prides itself in serving only the freshest fresh catch as the phrase “off the hook” connotes, has a very interesting story to it. The first branch opened in May 2016 in Abu Dhabi. Today, the establishment, which has grown to become a popular dining destination not only among Filipinos, but for locals and tourists as well, has eight branches, the ninth set to open in April this year. “When I came here, I already had this mindset that I will not be an employee forever,” said Rolly D. Brucales, 46, is fifth among nine children born to merchant parents who own a meat stall at Albay Public Market in the Bicol Region of the Philippines. ubai, United Arab Emirates: Breaking a Guinness World Records (GWR) title is more than just doing something amazing. It recently took 33-year old Pakistani national, Azmat Khan six minutes and one second to break the previous Guinness World Records title for fastest mile dribbling a basketball. Khan is a Kohat product, and he also holds the record title for the 10 miles equivalent. Khan’s story with GWR started by deciding that he wanted to take his achievements to the next level, so he had to find something he thought he could handle on a global level. Searching GWR site, a record title on basketball drew his attention held by American Reed McManigal, who managed to set the record in 6 minutes 39 seconds. Two cyclists served as videographers to document the attempt, using their mobile phones. Khan was able to shatter Reed McManigal’s record by almost 38 seconds.

Raju Gidwani’s journey: From supermarket shelf boy to executive director By Jojo Dass
W
hen at a hypermart, be nice to the “shelf boys,” the guys who arrange merchandises across the racks and help you find your way to the cookie jar you’re looking for, or was it the peanut butter jam? You never know. That guy could be the next Raju Gidwani, whose colorful story goes back to the days when he was 23 in 1991 and, having just finished his MBA a year earlier, was filling up rows upon rows of shelves at supermarkets in Ajman and Sharjah instead of sitting on a swivel chair signing papers. Years later, Gidwani, who left his middle class family, which was running a textile business in Beawar, Rajasthan, India to, in his own words, “create my own destiny, achieve goals and self-depend,” would become executive director of Shankar Trading Co., an affiliate of the very supermarkets he was “shelf boy” at. “I joined Shankar Trading in 1991. I learned from scratch. I started working as a shelf boy. From there, I began my journey. I learned, in a couple of years, the retail trade,” Gidwani now 52, told Dubai Vibes Magazine in a rare interview. From working the shelves, Gidwani was assigned to handle import procurement and logistics in 1993. Two years later in 1995, he was promoted as manager. In 2010, he became general manager and in 2015, was the director for the company’s fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) division. He became executive director last year. The company, meantime, has grown to become a key player in UAE’s retail trade, being a major importer and wholesale distributor of “ethnic” FMCGs to such big brands like West Zone, Carrefour, Choitrams and Lulu, as well as the cooperatives. “It was challenging when I left India. During my study time, I was in India helping the family with the textile business. It was really a
hard time for me working in a supermarket,” added Gidwani, who at nine was already helping his father with the textile business. Gidwani found brotherly love in Naresh Bhawnani, chairman of West Zone Group, and provided support – a business relationship that would prove fruitful through the years. “There was one West Zone in 2005,” recalled Gidwani. “The 125th store (in the UAE) will open in Dubai soon,” he added. A week prior to this interview, West Zone Supermarket opened its 124th store, which is located in Abu Dhabi. The first West Zone branch opened in Mirdiff on Dec.2, 2005, according to Gidwani. The easy availability of Filipino FMCGs across UAE is largely being credited to Gidwani, too. “I saw the potential 20 years ago,” he said. “Every nationality, when they come here (in the UAE), they always miss their home food,” he added. Gidwani said he first visited the Philippines in 1995. Soon, he was transacting business directly with manufacturers there. And so, starting off with around 20 Filipino products, Shankar Trading is now importing and distributing over 1,000 in the UAE, he said. What probably keeps Gidwani going is that spirit of being a good Samaritan. On weekends, he engages himself in social work. “I want to help the community. I want to see everyone happy. Nobody should sleep hungry,” Gidwani said. “We’ve earned a lot from here. Now it’s time to give back to the community,” he added. Indeed, having gone full circle from arranging supermarket shelves to importing and distributing mechandizes, there seems nowhere else to go but back to the community, where after all and at the end of the day, it all began.

BRUNO MARS teams up with Lacoste, launches lifestyle brand F
or the launch of his new lifestyle brand, Bruno Mars teams up with Lacoste to become Ricky Regal, his designer alter ego. Inspired by a lust for life and an entrepreneurial Midas touch, the collection bridges Bruno’s enigmatic personality and distinct style with Lacoste’s iconic blend of sport and luxury. “I’ve been very fortunate to have been asked to do collaborations in the past, but it always came with guidelines. Lacoste was the first and only brand that said, ‘Bruno we want you to make this truly yours.’ The respect of such creative freedom coming from a heritage fashion house was an honor,” says Bruno Mars. Freedom, spontaneity and creativity. Bruno Mars joins forces with Lacoste to create his very first lifestyle brand. A collaboration that began in Los Angeles, where he and Louise Trotter, Lacoste’s Creative Director, first met. Giving free rein to his imagination, the American artist pushed all the limits to give life to Ricky Regal, whose style embodies his passion for flamboyant rhythm and his love for the Crocodile. “When I’m on stage my name is Bruno Mars. When I’m making lavish luxurious garments, I go by Ricky Regal” says Bruno Mars. The Lacoste x Ricky Regal collection is all about bringing together two strong energies: Mars & Lacoste’s crocodile. A universe with an emblematic flourish and flair, translated into a range of ready-to-wear clothing, footwear and accessories. Articulated around fluid shirts and pop tracksuits, the line features shorts, polo shirts, T-shirts, pants, slides and socks, as well as an iconic pair of aviator sunglasses. Sportswear, both casual and dressy. With Lacoste x Ricky Regal, his collection delivers a seductive palette of strong colors: mustard yellow, petrol blue, eggplant purple, coral red and tie-dye. A vibrant state of mind boosted by Lacoste’s sportswear expertise. Velvet, silk and cotton fabrics with impeccable finishes create a fluid vibe, with pieces to wear on their own or as a complete look.
