TALK OF THE TOWN
AED100 million villa on Palm Jumeirah
D
ubai, UAE: MState has announced the market launch of the AED100 million Villa Aurum located on the tip of frond M on the Palm Jumeirah.
The property is believed to be one of the most expensive, and exclusive currently available. The property also reflects the robust performance of the super-prime property market in Dubai over the past six months, and its emerging status as an international safe haven for the Ultra and High Net Worth community during the pandemic. Villa Aurum is part of a collection of five breath-taking landmark villas, designed by leading architects LW Design Group. The architectural threestorey wonder, set on more than 1,300 square meters of land, boasts a white sandy private beach and spectacular panoramic city and sunset views. The six-bedroom house was designed with light and space in mind and is flooded with interesting linear shading that is perfect for admiring the ever-changing light of the Arabian Gulf. Riccardo Scala, Head of Luxury Sales and Luxury Leasing, Luxury Property, comments, “Dubai’s super prime residential market has been positively affected with new buyers acquiring homes that are ‘reasonably priced’ in comparison to what they are used to paying in their country of origin. As a result, the real-estate market recovered remarkably fast from the shocking depths it had hit early in 2020, reverting to 2019 levels within the span of two months. This increased activity continued throughout the second half of the year and into 2021, meaning we predict incredible levels of demand from this truly unique property.

‘I love working here because…’
Young Emirati entrepreneur launches own online platform
D
ubai, UAE: An Emirati student at Aldar Academies’ Al Ain Academy has launched her own online platform “Rainbow Chimney,” offering unique boxes containing books and educational toys for children between the ages of 3 and 9.
Michael Cinco shares why Dubai has a special place in his heart
With the support of her parents, the young entrepreneur, AlDhabi Al Muhairi, developed an idea from a simple box of educational toys for her friends at school, to an online website offering books and customized boxes. Developing her love for reading at the tender age of 3, AlDhabi spends her time reading books on astronauts and science.
By Jojo Dass DUBAI: Sometime in 1997, Michael Cinco, then an up-andcoming couturier, set foot in Dubai to work in one of the city’s biggest fashion house. Twenty-four years and dozens of awards later, he now has established his own label and a decent following of believers among them, celebrities like Sarah the Duchess of York, Beyonce, Jennifer Lopez, Rihanna, Lady Gaga, Mariah Carey, 1994 Miss World Aishwarya Rai, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Ashanti, Tyra Banks, Naomi Campbell – the list is endless! Needless to say, Cinco has developed a special bonding with the city that has stood witness to his phenomenal success from Day One when he was making small steps to when he was finally making big leaps around the world. “It was very difficult at first because it was my first time to be away from home and be in a city far, far away,” Cinco told Dubai Vibes Magazine in an exclusive one-on-one in his sprawling office at Dubai Design District. But, he said, he eventually managed to adapt and has grown to be fond of the city. “I love working in Dubai because you live in a city that gives you a lot of motivation and inspiration. Dubai gave me an opportunity to open a business and live a comfortable life,” Cinco said. Cinco said it has been one of his biggest childhood dreams to dress up celebrities. “As a designer, I am happy when the clients who wear my creations are satisfied. The greatest fulfillment of a designer is having to come up with a signature look that people recognize. “Like when people compliment someone wearing a dress and say, ‘I love your dress. It’s very Michael Cinco,” he said. Born on August 27, 1971, Michael Cinco grew up enthralled by the glamor of the women of classic Hollywood movies. The impeccable elegance and sophistication of Audrey Hepburn in My Fair Lady created an indelible impression on his formative design imagination. In the picturesque island of Samar, in the Philippines, the young Cinco would indulge in games of dress-up with his Hollywood muses: “I pictured those fabulous heroines and imagined dressing them up in my creations. I chased after those visions….”
Having a passion for reading, coupled with the support of her family and school, AlDhabi began putting together boxes of tools and books which she believed would make learning fun for children.
Towards the billionaire lifestyle: The emergence of the Middle East’s super home
T
he concept of the “Super Home” is not something new – it was a big thing 20 years ago, with designers in LA and NYC being asked by the UHNW clients to create projects for their homes that were unique and iconic. This, according to Kate Instone, founder and creative director at Blush International, a leading interior design company. “However, given a convergence of factors, I feel that the Super Home is set to be the next big trend to infiltrate the Middle Eastern market, ” Instone said. “The market has grown in sophistication and clients don’t want a copy of something they have seen at their friend’s house they want something that is unique and was created for them,” she said.

24-year-old activist leads advocacy on mental health
D
ubai, UAE: Ally Salama has many firsts to his name. He was the first Egyptian male youth speaker on mental health at the United Nations. He has built a #1 trending podcast across six countries, and his online magazine EMPWR Mag was among Harvard’s Top 7 Most Impactful Social Initiatives, in 2019. But Ally’s most significant achievement is empowering honest and compassionate dialogue around mental health, as a spokesperson and activist. An ex-pro athlete, a social entrepreneur, and a mental-health ambassador, Ally Salama is using his own experience with clinical depression to help others. With the intent to create a cultural shift and make mental health part of the conversation in every household across MENA, he is creating an ecosystem that fosters trust and hope. “My goal is to open minds and create change. Although many people today understand that mental illness is a medical condition, there are still many stigmatizing misconceptions and stereotypes at large,” he said. “But the only way forward is to increase awareness, empathy, and compassion for those afflicted. Which is why I created EMPWR. I want everyone to know they are not alone on this journey, and that together, we can instill a renewed positivity among those that have been suffering silently. A supportive and understanding attitude has the power to create compassionate communities that remove the stigma from mental illness and give hope to those who need it most,” added Ally. In 2019, Ally took to the podium at the World Health Organization (WHO), where he shared his life experience, as well as his journey to help those with mental disabilities overcome the stigma associated with the condition. “Too often, people with mental illness feel trapped, isolated, and discriminated against, because their condition is misunderstood,” he says.
Niranjan Gidwani on the ‘half-life of a human’ and how to re-invigorate
L
ife, careers, the genuine way to live an ethically balanced existence, and the radioactive nature of nuclear fuel – all have very interesting similarities, according to renowned Dubai business consultant, Mr. Niranjan Gidwani, director and former CEO of Eros Group Dubai Consider the very nature of nuclear fuel. Its value is at its peak when in an enriched state. Then it goes into a state called ‘half-life’ and begins to lose energy. After attaining this state, the decay of the nuclear fuel becomes exponential. Thus, at its half-life, much of its utility is over and it becomes what is known as ‘spent fuel’. At that state, it is an environmental liability, Mr. Gidwani said. “Our life, our existence, and our careers are like enriched uranium. The tragedy, however, is that when we reach our half-life state, most of us do not notice the fact. Other people come to learn of it before we do,” he added. Mr. Gidwani suggested that we first ask ourselves: What is the telltale sign that one is closing in on one’s half-life? The answer, he said, is inherent in the ability to answer another question: “What is new and different about myself that I can think of in the last six months that went by?” “Now take the word ‘new’, and look at every other single word in the dictionary. If you prefix ‘new’ to any randomly picked word, the result will be a term that stands for a more progressed state. New manager. New friend. New movie. New learning. New skill. New city. New physical and mental health. New hobby. New car. New sport. ReNewed ethics. We could go on and on. If we step back and periodically ask ourselves what was new in the last six months, a few of these ‘new things’ should jump out of the mind to indicate that we are still in a state of enrichment,” Mr. Gidwani said.

ilipina from Tokyo moves to Dubai, opens a successful Japanese restaurant
Dubai, this city that never sleeps has never ceased to attract dreamers from all over the world for the promise she holds dear to her heart: life-changing moments. Among them is Virginia Sorongon, a Filipina who grew up in Tokyo and moved to Dubai seven years ago, leaving behind a mollycoddled life to find her proverbial place under the sun. “I wanted another challenge so I started from zero and worked myself up. I went through all the pain and so many trials,” Sorongon told Dubai Vibes Magazine in a rare, exclusive interview. Sorongon started out as an all-around staff – cleaner and waitress – at a Japanese dining venue in Dubai back in 2014, making AED1500 a month. “On my first day of work,” she recalls, “I was asked to clean the toilet.” “I was crying on the job. I’d go home at 4am and would be back at work by 9am. I didn’t give up,” she added. Sorongon would become manager only a year later. By 2016, she was making it good as consultant for Japanese restaurants. “I started investing. I was not anymore a wage earner. I have become an entrepreneur,” she said, beaming with joy.

HOW TO OVERCOME ‘CORONASOMIA’
D
ubai, UAE: The average person spends about 26 years of their life sleeping – that’s 9,490 days or 227,760 hours. But we also spend around seven years of our lives trying to get to sleep!
Poor sleeping habits and lack of quality sleep can cause more than just a gloomy unproductive day at work; in the long run, it can adversely impact our mental and physical health, and has been linked to health issues such as a weakened immune system, high blood pressure, mood swings, depression, and reduced cognitive abilities. In light of World Sleep Day, we must recognize that sleep is an essential pillar of well-being and that the quality of sleep we get directly reflects the quality of life we lead. The Covid-19 outbreak has made it harder to get a sound slumber at night. In 2020, the Google searches for “insomnia” were higher than ever before as people all over the world found it increasingly challenging to fall asleep due to the anxiety, uncertainty, lack of physical activity, and disruption of regular routine unleashed by the pandemic. In fact, experts have coined a term for this condition – “Coronasomia.”
TAKE A DEEP BREATH WITH ‘KIND BY DESIGN’ HAND-POURED BEESWAX CANDLES
D
ubai, UAE – Dubai-based sustainable brand, Kind by Design, has launched a new collection of hand-poured beeswax candles known to naturally purify the air around them as they burn.
Committed to ethical processes, these candles use an all-natural, custom beeswax blend, with clay containers as well as discarded and upcycled beverage bottles. They also feature eco-friendly wicks and fragrance oils that are free from phthalates and parabens. Sophia Sheikh, co-founder of Kind by Design said, “With an increased amount of time being spent at home, we are more conscious of the products we use around us and our families. Candles are a great addition to any room; however, we wanted to go beyond just a pleasant smell and nice looking accessory. We are mindful of the air we breathe in, and we wanted our candles to reflect that.”

Giorgio Armani Eyewear Spring/ Summer 2021 Collection
This season Giorgio Armani revisits the iconic style of the 1930s and 1940s and the imagery of certain films of that era, with a finely crafted titanium frame, outlining an almost ethereal oval around the eyes. The design of the frames, is the contemporary evolution of the first style created and worn by the designer himself, which has come to represent the brand’s values. The perfect synthesis of effortless elegance and timeless style, Icon is available in titanium with a matte finish, in gunmetal with blue lenses, gold with brown lenses and, in the prescription version, in gold or black titanium with clear lenses.
“Icon is the style I wear myself. Glasses for me are a complement to a style, the mirror of a personality. I prefer them to be lightweight and essential in design not to be invasive. Only in this way do they become one with the wearer, a light filter that captures the smallest of nuances, the frame through which we observe the world,” says Giorgio Armani. The glasses come in an exclusive packaging and are available in selected Giorgio Armani boutiques worldwide.
