Season Preview

C

converted wing Lexi Kingsbery (six games), along with freshmen Hannah Haeseker and Ja’Cole Tabor will help Wilmington in the paint.

oming off a 15-12 season, the Wilmington College women’s basketball team will have to replace a lot of production if they hope to even replicate that level of success. The Fightin’ Quakers graduated five seniors, including the top two scorers and the top three rebounders. “We graduated five very important players for us, but we do return five players who have had significant playing experience,” said Wilmington head coach Jerry Scheve. “Our tallest player is 5-9, so height may be an issue. But there are a lot of different ways you can win basketball games, and as long as we play hard, smart and together we will be fine.

Brown returns to the backcourt after missing the last two seasons due to an injury. Wilmington will turn to defensive stopper Courtney Tucker and sharpshooter Spencer Robles also at guard.

Haley Howard

“I am excited about this team because of their attitude,” Scheve continued. “They are a team that really is going to play hard, and play together. We have to learn to play a little smarter, and when we do that we can be a very good team.” Leading the cast of returners is senior point guard Haley Howard. After missing her freshman season with an injury, she has made steady improvements and Scheve feels she is ready to have a great year. She started all but one game last season, averaging 7.3 points, 3.8 rebounds and 2.9 assists. Howard is the top returning scorer for Wilmington. Along with Howard, the bulk of the leadership will fall on a group of seniors – Bethany Ahrens, Makenzie Wippel and Jada Brown. “Our four seniors have enthusiastically taken on their new leadership roles, and each one appears determined to have their best year since arriving here,” said Scheve. Ahrens and Wippel are undersized post players, who will have to provide Wilmington with the toughness on the boards that is expected from typical WC teams. Wippel is the top returning rebounder with 4.4 boards per game, while Ahrens recorded 2.2 rebounds a season ago. A pair of 5-10 sophomores, Kirsten Glick (nine games) and

Bethany Ahrens

“(Tucker and Robles) have both shown a lot of improvement over last year, and are going to be key players for us again this year,” said Scheve. “They have both worked hard at turning their weaknesses into strengths, and have become more versatile offensive players.”

Robles was the team’s primary three-point option, shooting 34.7 percent (41-of-118) from behind the arc. Her 41 makes were more than double of any other player, while her conversion rate was the second highest on the team. However, she shot just 6-of-26 (23 percent) in the last nine games of the year with four of those makes coming in one game. Tucker, who averaged 4.7 points and 3.6 rebounds, will be counted on to provide more production at the offensive end this season. Junior Chelsie Karling has battled injuries in her first two seasons, but could provide Wilmington with another shooter on the perimeter. A host of sophomores – Allison Prine (nine games), Whitney Barfknecht (eight games), and Ashley Andracki (12 games) – along with freshman Brittaney Jefferson will all compete for minutes in the WC backcourt. “None of our five sophomores received a lot of playing time last year as freshmen, but it wasn’t because they can’t play,” said Scheve. “They can, and they will get the opportunity to show that this year. Ashley Andracki, Whitney Barfknecht and Allison Prine are all talented guards, who all bring a little something different to the mix. They are being counted on to step up and play this year.” Wilmington opens the season 8 p.m. Friday, November 15 in the Damon’s/Hampton Inn Tip-Off Tournament.

Head Coach Jerry Scheve In his 23 years on the Wilmington sideline, Jerry Scheve has won more than 400 games. For Scheve — who was named the National Coach of the Year after leading the Lady Quakers to the 2003-04 NCAA Division III national championship — it is an enduring love for basketball, not victory milestones, that keeps his coaching fire burning. “I coached my first team when I was 16 years old,” Scheve said. “After I got out of college I started coaching again. As I was trying to find a career I knew the only thing I really enjoyed was coaching basketball. I remember telling myself that I didn’t know what else I’m going to do, but I know I’m always going to coach basketball, and I have. I’ve done it because of everything that’s involved with it — the kids, the game itself, the competitive part of it.” Since coming to Wilmington in 1990, Scheve’s teams have been the epitome of competitive, winning eight regular season and seven conference tournament titles. The 2003-04 national championship season was preceded by three National Tournament appearances that included trips to the “Elite Eight” and “Sweet 16” in 2002 and 2003, respectively. Wilmington advanced to the second round of the 2007 NCAA Tournament and returned to the NCAA Tournament in 2008. At Wilmington, Scheve has averaged more than 19 wins per season. Eleven of his 21 teams have won at least 20 games. The Lady Quakers have won at least 20 games 10 of the past 15 years. The numbers are impressive, if not awesome, but they are not the numbers Scheve is focused on. “The wins are nice, but there are other numbers we concentrate on to get the wins,” Scheve said. “One goal we have every year is to make more free throws than our opponents shoot. It’s a real difficult goal to attain, but when you do it — and we have done it — it just indicates you’re doing a lot of things right. Number one, you’re getting to the foul line. Number two, you’re not fouling; you’re getting the other teams’ good players into foul trouble and you’re not getting your own people into foul trouble. It means you’re playing smart offensively and it means you’re playing smart defensively. When you do those things, you’re going to be successful.” Scheve also has been named Great Lakes Region Coach of the Year, Ohio Women’s Basketball Coach of the Year, and Coach of the Year in the AMC, HCAC and OAC. He will be inducted into the Ohio Basketball Hall of Fame in February 2014.

Assistant Coaches Allan King, Jr. Assistant Coach Allan King returns to Wilmington for his second stint as an assistant women’s basketball coach. King was an assistant for the Quakers from 2005 to 2007. He will also serve at the assistant softball coach. He comes to WC after serving as the head girls basketball coach at Russia High School, where they won the district championship in 2012 for the first time in 12 years. The Raiders posted three straight winning seasons under King. After leaving Wilmington in 2007, he went on to serve as the head women’s basketball coach at the University of Pittsburgh Bradford. King took over a program with four players upon his arrival and won 11 games in his second season. He was also the strength and conditioning coach, and created a reading/mentoring program for disadvantaged youth.

Olivia Waters Assistant Coach Olivia Waters is in her first season as an assistant women’s basketball coach at Wilmington College, her alma mater. A four-year letterwinner for the Quakers, Waters was also a team captain as a senior and earned First Team All-OAC honors in her final season. Waters finished her playing career in 2011 tenth all-time in rebounding with 692 boards. While a student at Wilmington, she earned Dean’s List in multiple semesters, earned Who’s Who Among American College Students distinction and served on the StudentAthlete Advisory Committee. Prior to coming back to Wilmington, she served as the assistant equipment manager at Division I Tulane University.

COACHES COMMENTS

Allison is a very talented player, and has come a long way in the last year. She knows how to run a team, and she is much better prepared to have a great season.

Haley is our leader, both on and off the court. She has improved significantly each year, and I don’t think this year will be an exception.

2012-13 Season Recap

With the toughest schedule in the nation, the Wilmington College women’s basketball team finished the season 15-12. However, five of those losses came at the hands of team ranked in the Top 10 nationally with another loss coming to Division I Youngstown State. “We didn’t meet all of our goals, but I was very pleased with our effort, and thought we had a very successful season,” said head coach Jerry Scheve. Seniors Brianna Peters and LeAnn Topp earned All-OAC honors. Peters, who earned second team honors, led the team with 10.3 points and was second with 6.1 rebounds. She led the team in scoring in eight games last season, and was the leading rebounder in seven games. Topp was the epitome of the word leader for the Lady Quakers. She led the team with 7.0 rebounds and was third on the team in scoring with 7.6 points. Topp was the team’s leading rebounder in 10 games, five of which she recorded double figures. Despite missing five conference games, she showed enough that the conference coaches felt she was worthy of all-OAC recognition. Senior Bria Eslick, who along with Peters graduated after three seasons, was second on the team with 7.9 points and added 5.3 rebounds. Five players – Peters, Emily Zimmerman, Bethany Ahrens, Haley Howard and Spencer Robles – were named to the OAC academic honor roll.

OAC Tournament 1st Round #6 John Carroll, 60, #7 Marietta 53 #8 Muskingum, 60, #5 Capital 58 The Ohio Athletic Conference, the third-oldest conference in college athletics, is predated only by the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (1888) and the Big Ten (1895). The Conference is older than the World Series and even the NCAA itself, and has survived two World Wars, the Great Depression, the Korean War and the Vietnam Conflict. From a modest beginning of six charter members in 1902, the OAC grew to as many as 24 members in the mid-1920’s. Through the years a total of 31 colleges and universities at one time or another have been members of the OAC. Currently, the Conference consists of 10 members: BaldwinWallace University, Capital University, Heidelberg University, John Carroll University, Marietta College, University of Mount Union, Muskingum University, Ohio Northern University, Otterbein University and Wilmington College. Wilmington became the 31st OAC member school in July 1, 2000. The enrollments of the 10 OAC institutions range from 1,200 to 4,500. All of the schools were founded in the 19th century, and have long and outstanding academic reputations. While maintaining these high academic standards, OAC athletic teams and athletes have consistently enjoyed a great deal of success on a regional and national level. The athletic competition is viewed not as an end in itself, but as an extension of the edcational programs.

Athletic Training at Wilmington College SPECIALISTS IN THE PREVENTION, TREATMENT AND REHABILITATION OF SPORTS INJURIES Athletic training is an exciting and fast-paced allied medical profession. As an integral member of the athletic healthcare team, the certified athletic trainer (ATC) is educated in prevention, treatment, evaluation and rehabilitation of sports-related injuries and illnesses sustained by physically active people. Certified athletic trainers work closely with medical professionals in a wide range of settings that include high schools, colleges and universities, professional teams, sports medicine clinics, corporate fitness facilities and hospitals. In 2012, Wilmington’s athletic training program earned the maximum seven-year accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE). Students completing the Bachelor of Science degree program at WC are eligible for the National Athletic Trainers’ Association Board of Certification (NATABOC) examination to become a certified athletic trainer. Students also are eligible for the Ohio licensing exam upon earning their ATC credentials. All athletic training students are considered pre-professional during their first two semesters. After satisfactory completion of the pre-professional requirements, students are advanced to the professional phase of the curriculum, including advanced clinical education.

About Wilmington As a school founded by Quakers, Wilmington College embraces persons from all backgrounds, faiths and philosophies, and promotes in its program and activities such values as integrity, diversity, community, service, peace and social justice, and respect for all persons. The college also values international cultures and facilitates courses in global studies, as well as accommodating long-and shortterm study-abroad and touring opportunities. While Wilmington offers such popular majors as education, business administration, biology, criminal justice, sports management, social work and pre-professional, some of its more unique academic areas are the highly acclaimed agriculture program and its athletic training/ sports medicine program, which are considered among the best in the nation. Popular co-curricular activities for students are the numerous campus organizations at Wilmington that range from fraternities and sororities to faith-based groups, music and drama, publications, student government and service learning. Wilmington regularly hosts entertainment programs designed especially for college students, as well as those open to the greater community such as its highly acclaimed annual peace symposium and Issues & Artists Series, which has brought to campus unique entertainers, provocative and informative speakers, and entities representing diverse American and international cultures. Much has changed at Wilmington College since students gained national fame for building a dormitory in 1948. But a constant throughout the college’s 141-year history has been the transforming nature of the Wilmington College experience. Students leave Wilmington with the tools to succeed as they engage in careers or further their education in today’s rapidly changing world. They also bring with them a wealth of knowledge and experience gained from the liberal arts, the embodiment of well-rounded individuals able to think critically and appreciate the role the arts, sciences and humanities play in a fulfilling life. They also realize that service to others is often an important road to self-realization. Indeed, since 1870, Wilmington College has prepared students to make a living, make a life and make a difference.

Why We Play Division III Athletics It’s not about getting a scholarship, getting drafted, or making SportsCenter. It’s a deep need in us that comes from the heart. We need to practice, to play, to lift, to hustle, to sweat. We do it all for our teammates and for the student in our calculus class that we don’t even know. We don’t practice with a future major league first baseman; we practice with a future sports agent. We don’t lift weights with a future Olympic wrestler; we lift with a future doctor. We don’t run with a future Wimbledon champion; we run with a future CEO. It’s a bigger part of us than our friends and family can understand. Sometimes we play for 2,000 fans; sometimes 25. But we still play hard. You cheer for us because you know us. You know more than just our names. Like all of you, we are students first. We don’t sign autographs. But we do sign graduate school applications, MCAT exams, and student body petitions. When we miss a kick or strike out, we don’t let down an entire state. We only let down our teammates, coaches, and fans. But the hurt is still the same. We train hard, lift, throw, run, kick, tackle, shoot, dribble, and lift some more, and in the morning we go to class. And in that class we are nothing more than students. It’s about pride - in ourselves, in our school. It’s about our love and passion for the game. And when it’s over, when we walk off that court or field for the last time, our hearts crumble. Those tears are real. But deep down inside, we are very proud of ourselves. We will forever be what few can claim ... college athletes.
