Season Preview After suffering crushing losses in the Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament in back-to-back seasons, the Wilmington College men’s basketball wants to erase the sour tastes from their mouths; and the only way to rid themselves of it, is with a championship trophy. “I am very excited about this year’s edition of Wilmington College basketball,” said Wilmington head coach K.C. Hunt. “We are fortunate to have six quality seniors that are determined to win a championship. As always, the league will be loaded with talented players and fantastic coaches. Hopefully Taylor Wellman our experience and quality senior leadership will allow us to compete at a very high level.” Wilmington returns three of its top four scorers, including first team All-OAC selection Malcolm Heard II. The senior forward led the team with 16.9 points and 7.8 rebounds. “Malcolm has been the focal point for every team that we have played in the last two years,” said Hunt. “What Malcolm has done is work as hard, if not harder, than any player we have ever had in this program over the summer. The guy lives in the gym, works on his game, and it shows on the floor. His dramatic improvement each and every year is a credit to him, and I don’t think we are going to see anything different this year. Malcolm is a team leader for us, and is going to have to play well for us to play well.” Senior Ben Vonderhaar will solidify WC’s frontcourt after averaging 5.2 points and 1.7 rebounds a season ago. “Ben has been awesome,” said Hunt. “He is going to have a great senior year. I have complete confidence that he is going to compete at an all-league level. He has embraced his senior year and I think they guys have a ton of confidence in what he has been able to do so far. Developing depth behind Malcolm and Ben is the key to that position.” The Fightin’ Quakers have plenty of frontcourt options with seniors Christian Patterson and Ben McGriff, junior transfer Jonathan Bibbs, freshman Zach Layne-Wolf and a cast of others. Patterson is the most experienced as a three-year letterwinner, while McGriff played in 21 games last season in his first year

Dwight Johnson

in the program. The starting backcourt of junior Dwight Johnson and senior Klarke Ransome also returns after averaging 8.4 and 7.4 points, respectively. Johnson combined with junior Taylor Wellman to give the Fightin’ Quakers a solid point guard tandem, averaging 3.4 and 3.3 assists, respectively. “Our backcourt is definitely a strength for us,” said Hunt. “They are guys that have been through OAC battles, and we have four of those guys that have started more than 20 games in their career. I like our experience. Hopefully their experience will help us close out some games and earn some wins

down the stretch.” Junior R.J. Leppert also returns after missing the second half of last season. He averaged 6.1 points and 4.6 rebounds off the bench in nine games. “R.J. is a unique player from the standpoint he can do a little bit of everything,” said Hunt. “He can play point guard if we need him to, he can play the four if we need him to. His versatility is definitely a weapon for us. He plays so hard and is so passionate about the game, I think he is going to have a great year.” Freshmen Kyle Rader, Law Williams and John Righter will push for time in the backcourt rotation. Hunt is known to want to press for the entire 40 minutes, but in order to be successful and live up to expectations Wilmington will have to develop some depth behind their veterans. The Fightin’ Quakers were picked to finish second in the OAC this season, but Hunt isn’t worried about his team forgetting its season-long process in competing for championships. “I don’t think our guys are full of themselves or getting too high at this point,” said Hunt. “We have been pretty business-like so far this preseason. I hope we have a chip on our shoulder to live up to those expectations. We are not afraid of expectations; we embrace it. Our only goal is to bring back a championship.” Wilmington kicks off its season Saturday against the College of Mount St. Joseph at the MSJ Tip-Off Tournament.

Head Coach K.C. Hunt K.C. Hunt begins his seventh season leading the Wilmington College men’s basketball program on the verge of becoming just the second coach in school history to amass 100 wins. After several years of instability, Hunt came in and righted the Wilmington ship and led the program to national prominence. In his first two seasons, the Quakers posted a combined 32-20 record and earned berths in two consecutive Ohio Athletic Conference Championships. In 2009-10, Wilmington won a school-record 22 games and captured its first OAC Tournament title and made its first appearance in the NCAA Championship, where the Quakers advanced to the second round before losing to No. 10 Eastern Mennonite University. Hunt was named the 2010 Great Lakes Region Coachof-the-Year. Since then, the Fightin’ Quakers returned to the OAC Finals in 2012, and then lost to the eventual OAC champions in a triple-overtime, semifinal thriller in the 2013 semifinals. Hunt’s team plays 40 minutes of intense basketball that is fueled by relentless effort on both ends of the court. And it all starts with high-pressure defense. Hunt played collegiate basketball at Wichita State University, and finished his career in the top 10 all-time in both steals and assists. A 1995 graduate of The Ohio State University, Hunt coached at St. Lawrence University, Dublin Coffman and Perry high schools prior to joining Wilmington’s staff in 2004. He is married to wife, Rebecca, and they have four children, Hannah (6), Elizabeth (6), Charlie (4) and Thomas (1).

Assistant Coaches Matt Sylvester Assistant Coach Matt Sylvester enters his second season as an assistant men’s basketball coach at Wilmington College after serving one season at OAC-rival Capital. Sylvester has roots deeply embedded in the Ohio basketball scene. He was a member of the Ohio State men’s basketball team from 2001-2006. During that span, he helped the Buckeyes win an outright Big Ten Championship and a Big Ten Tournament championship. Ohio State earned two trips to the NCAA tournament in his collegiate career. Sylvester also was a standout performer at Cincinnati Moeller, where he was a two-time Greater Catholic League Player-ofthe-Year and finished his prep career with the Ohio High School Coaches Player-of-the-Year award. The GCL is one of Ohio’s most competitive high school conferences. Following his time with the Buckeyes, he played professionally in Europe and worked two years in the financial services industry. He lives in Columbus with his wife, Sarah.

Kerry Wilkinson Assistant Coach Kerry Wilkinson returns for his third season as an assistant coach at Wilmington College. A native of Wilmington, Ohio, and graduate of Clinton-Massie High School, Wilkinson was a three-year member of the Wilmington College basketball team before graduating in 2009. “It’s exciting to have Kerry back as part of our basketball family,” Wilmington head coach K.C. Hunt said. “He was a tremendous player. If he hadn’t been bitten by injuries, he would have a lot of records around here. His knowledge of the game and excitement to be back at Wilmington are really going to rub off on our team.” Wilkinson will be involved in recruiting, scouting and will work with Wilmington’s guards. Wilkinson is an intervention specialist at Wilmington Middle School.

2012-13 Recap

The triple overtime loss to Marietta in Ohio Athletic Conference semifinals was the last taste of college basketball for five seniors, but it doesn’t diminish the effect it left behind. “It was a heartbreaking way to end our season, yet I was very proud of the team’s effort and togetherness in that semifinal game and all year long,” said head coach K.C. Hunt. “Our senior class set the tone from day one and where great examples of what it means to be a student-athlete. They have left our program in a great place with bigger and better things to come next season.” Seniors Brandon Candella, Miles Bankston, Tim Pfeiffer, Ethan Fite and Taylor Kin were all contributors to the school’s first-ever NCAA tournament berth, and nearly brought a home an OAC Tournament final to campus last season. Junior Malcolm Heard earned first-team All-OAC for the second straight season, while Candella earned second team recognition. Heard was one of two OAC players that are ranked in the top five in both scoring and rebounding. He was second in the league with 7.6 rebounds and fifth with 16.3 points. He led the Fightin’ Quakers in both scoring and rebounding in 14 of the team’s 26 games. He scored his 1,000th career point in the season finale against Mount Union. From the beginning of the season it was apparent that Candella took his game to another level. He was tenth in the league with 14.6 points per game, and eclipsed his previous seasonal highs in every offensive category. He became the 24th member of Wilmington’s 1,000-point club. He was the team’s leading scorer in seven games, and reached double figures in 23 of the team’s 26 games. Candella was also named the school’s Clyde Lamb winner and the Male Senior Athlete of the Year. Candella, who earned Academic All-District honors, and Pfeiffer were also named to the OAC academic honor roll.

The Conference is older than the World Series and even the NCAA itself, and has survived two World Wars, the Great Depression, the Korean War and the Vietnam Conflict. From a modest beginning of six charter members in 1902, the OAC grew to as many as 24 members in the mid-1920’s. Through the years a total of 31 colleges and universities at one time or another have been members of the OAC. Currently, the Conference consists of 10 members: BaldwinWallace University, Capital University, Heidelberg University, John Carroll University, Marietta College, University of Mount Union, Muskingum University, Ohio Northern University, Otterbein University and Wilmington College. Wilmington became the 31st OAC member school in July 1, 2000. The enrollments of the 10 OAC institutions range from 1,200 to 4,500. All of the schools were founded in the 19th century, and have long and outstanding academic reputations. While maintaining these high academic standards, OAC athletic teams and athletes have consistently enjoyed a great deal of success on a regional and national level. The athletic competition is viewed not as an end in itself, but as an extension of the edcational programs.

Athletic Training

Athletic Training at Wilmington College SPECIALISTS IN THE PREVENTION, TREATMENT AND REHABILITATION OF SPORTS INJURIES Athletic training is an exciting and fast-paced allied medical profession. As an integral member of the athletic healthcare team, the certified athletic trainer (ATC) is educated in prevention, treatment, evaluation and rehabilitation of sports-related injuries and illnesses sustained by physically active people. Certified athletic trainers work closely with medical professionals in a wide range of settings that include high schools, colleges and universities, professional teams, sports medicine clinics, corporate fitness facilities and hospitals. In 2012, Wilmington’s athletic training program earned the maximum seven-year accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE). Students completing the Bachelor of Science degree program at WC are eligible for the National Athletic Trainers’ Association Board of Certification (NATABOC) examination to become a certified athletic trainer. Students also are eligible for the Ohio licensing exam upon earning their ATC credentials. All athletic training students are considered pre-professional during their first two semesters. After satisfactory completion of the pre-professional requirements, students are advanced to the professional phase of the curriculum, including advanced clinical education.

About Wilmington As a school founded by Quakers, Wilmington College embraces persons from all backgrounds, faiths and philosophies, and promotes in its program and activities such values as integrity, diversity, community, service, peace and social justice, and respect for all persons. The college also values international cultures and facilitates courses in global studies, as well as accommodating long-and shortterm study-abroad and touring opportunities. While Wilmington offers such popular majors as education, business administration, biology, criminal justice, sports management, social work and pre-professional, some of its more unique academic areas are the highly acclaimed agriculture program and its athletic training/ sports medicine program, which are considered among the best in the nation. Popular co-curricular activities for students are the numerous campus organizations at Wilmington that range from fraternities and sororities to faith-based groups, music and drama, publications, student government and service learning. Wilmington regularly hosts entertainment programs designed especially for college students, as well as those open to the greater community such as its highly acclaimed annual peace symposium and Issues & Artists Series, which has brought to campus unique entertainers, provocative and informative speakers, and entities representing diverse American and international cultures. Much has changed at Wilmington College since students gained national fame for building a dormitory in 1948. But a constant throughout the college’s 141-year history has been the transforming nature of the Wilmington College experience. Students leave Wilmington with the tools to succeed as they engage in careers or further their education in today’s rapidly changing world. They also bring with them a wealth of knowledge and experience gained from the liberal arts, the embodiment of well-rounded individuals able to think critically and appreciate the role the arts, sciences and humanities play in a fulfilling life. They also realize that service to others is often an important road to self-realization. Indeed, since 1870, Wilmington College has prepared students to make a living, make a life and make a difference.

Why We Play Division III Athletics It’s not about getting a scholarship, getting drafted, or making SportsCenter. It’s a deep need in us that comes from the heart. We need to practice, to play, to lift, to hustle, to sweat. We do it all for our teammates and for the student in our calculus class that we don’t even know. We don’t practice with a future major league first baseman; we practice with a future sports agent. We don’t lift weights with a future Olympic wrestler; we lift with a future doctor. We don’t run with a future Wimbledon champion; we run with a future CEO. It’s a bigger part of us than our friends and family can understand. Sometimes we play for 2,000 fans; sometimes 25. But we still play hard. You cheer for us because you know us. You know more than just our names. Like all of you, we are students first. We don’t sign autographs. But we do sign graduate school applications, MCAT exams, and student body petitions. When we miss a kick or strike out, we don’t let down an entire state. We only let down our teammates, coaches, and fans. But the hurt is still the same. We train hard, lift, throw, run, kick, tackle, shoot, dribble, and lift some more, and in the morning we go to class. And in that class we are nothing more than students. It’s about pride - in ourselves, in our school. It’s about our love and passion for the game. And when it’s over, when we walk off that court or field for the last time, our hearts crumble. Those tears are real. But deep down inside, we are very proud of ourselves. We will forever be what few can claim ... college athletes.
