Season Preview and 4.8 rebounds, and was second on the team with 27 made three-pointers. Additionally, Haeseker is the top returning rebounder for the Quakers.

Heading into the 2014-15 season, the Wilmington College women’s basketball team has plenty of questions that will need to be answered. “There are a lot of question marks about this team, but our veterans have all returned as better players than they were a year ago, and our freshmen have the potential to be one of the better groups we have had in several years,” said Wilmington head coach Jerry Scheve. “I think it is going to be lot of fun putting this team together, and I look for us to improve continuously throughout the season. How far that can take us only time will tell.

Glick started the season as a starting post player, but an injury slowed her progression. However, she wound up playing in 23 games, averaging 3.3 points and 2.6 rebounds.

Spencer Robles

The first question is how will they replace four seniors, including guard Haley Howard, that all played vital roles a season ago. Wilmington graduated two point guards and two post players, leaving the Fightin’ Quakers with “virtually no experience” in those spots Howard, a point guard, is the first player in school history to lead the team in points, rebounds and assists. Junior Ashley Andracki (Columbus, OH/Bishop Watterson) will move to the point guard position after starting 15 games at a wing for Wilmington last season. She averaged 13.8 minutes per game with 1.9 points per contest. Sophomore Brittaney Jefferson (Dayton, OH/ChaminadeJulienne) could also find minutes running the offense. Jefferson is the top returning scorer with 8.3 points per game, but her biggest impact came on the defensive end, where she was sixth in the OAC in steals. Junior Whitney Barfknecht (Vandalia, OH/Butler) along with freshmen Lexi Weber (Clyde, OH/Clyde), Shelby Mulliken (Walton, KY/Walton-Verona) and Ellie Kivell (Hamilton, OH/Lakota West) could all find time at the point guard position, however, preseason injuries have stunted the freshmen’s development. Senior Kirsten Glick (Arcadia, OH/Arcadia) and sophomore Hannah Haeseker (Germantown, OH/Valley View) bring the most experience playing the post. Haeseker made 18 starts in the post, while playing in all 27 games. She averaged 6.4 points

Courtney Tucker

played in 15 games.

Natural guards Mary Moyer (Martinsville, OH/ClintonMassie) and Alexandria Kingsbery (Lima, OH/ Central Catholic) are going to play the post this season. Moyer, who transferred from Talledega College at semester break, played in 14 games a season ago, while Kingsbery

Freshmen Emily Smith (Bellbrook, OH/Bellbrook), Sawyer Hooper (Leesburg, OH/Wilmington), Emily Harman (Versailles, OH/Versailles) and Heather Cox (Leesburg, OH/Fairfield Local) are all involved in the post player competition. A host of veterans will battle for the two starting wing positions. Seniors Spencer Robles (Clyde, OH/Clyde) and Courtney Tucker (Cincinnati, OH/Sycamore), sophomore Ja’Cole Tabor (Dayton, OH/Chaminade-Julienne), Jefferson and Barfknecht could be locked in a fierce competition all season long. They all will bring something different to the lineup. Robles, who started 21 of 27 games last season, led the team in three-pointers last season. Tucker played in 26 games with 12 starts and has been given the task of slowing the opponents top wing threat for the last three seasons. Tabor could be the wildcard. While her ability to contribute was hampered last season by a host of injuries, she has been one of the steadier performers in practice. Freshmen Savannah Hooper (Leesburg, OH/Wilmington) and Meranda Wilson (Marysville, OH/Marysville) will join the competition at wing.

Wilmington opens the season by hosting the Damon’s/Hampton Inn Tip-Off Tournament, which features National Runner-Up Whitman, on November 15. Follow us on Twitter: @DubCQuakers l #WeRDubC l Like us on Facebook: DubCQuakers l Instagram: DubCQuakers

Head Coach Jerry Scheve In his 24 years on the Wilmington sideline, Ohio Basketball Hall of Famer Jerry Scheve has won more than 400 games. For Scheve — who was named the National Coach of the Year after leading the Fightin’ Quakers to the 2003-04 NCAA Division III national championship — it is an enduring love for basketball, not victory milestones, that keeps his coaching fire burning. “I coached my first team when I was 16 years old,” Scheve said. “After I got out of college I started coaching again. As I was trying to find a career I knew the only thing I really enjoyed was coaching basketball. I remember telling myself that I didn’t know what else I’m going to do, but I know I’m always going to coach basketball, and I have. I’ve done it because of everything that’s involved with it — the kids, the game itself, the competitive part of it.” Since coming to Wilmington in 1990, Scheve’s teams have been the epitome of competitive, winning eight regular season and seven conference tournament titles. The 2003-04 national championship season was preceded by three National Tournament appearances that included trips to the “Elite Eight” and “Sweet 16” in 2002 and 2003, respectively. Wilmington advanced to the second round of the 2007 NCAA Tournament and returned to the NCAA Tournament in 2008. At Wilmington, Scheve has averaged more than 19 wins per season. Eleven of his 21 teams have won at least 20 games. The Fightin’ Quakers have won at least 20 games 10 of the past 15 years. The numbers are impressive, if not awesome, but they are not the numbers Scheve is focused on. “The wins are nice, but there are other numbers we concentrate on to get the wins,” Scheve said. “One goal we have every year is to make more free throws than our opponents shoot. It’s a real difficult goal to attain, but when you do it — and we have done it — it just indicates you’re doing a lot of things right. Number one, you’re getting to the foul line. Number two, you’re not fouling; you’re getting the other teams’ good players into foul trouble and you’re not getting your own people into foul trouble. It means you’re playing smart offensively and it means you’re playing smart defensively. When you do those things, you’re going to be successful.” Scheve also has been named Great Lakes Region Coach of the Year, Ohio Women’s Basketball Coach of the Year, and Coach of the Year in the AMC, HCAC and OAC. He will be inducted into the Ohio Basketball Hall of Fame in February 2014.

Assistant Coaches Allan King, Jr. Assistant Coach

Haley Howard Assistant Coach

Tuck Conner Assistant Coach

Allan King returns to Wilmington for his second stint as an assistant women’s basketball coach. King was an assistant for the Quakers from 2005 to 2007. He will also serve at the assistant softball coach. He comes to WC after serving as the head girls basketball coach at Russia High School, where they won the district championship in 2012 for the first time in 12 years. The Raiders posted three straight winning seasons under King. After leaving Wilmington in 2007, he went on to serve as the head women’s basketball coach at the University of Pittsburgh Bradford. King took over a program with four players upon his arrival and won 11 games in his second season. He was also the strength and conditioning coach, and created a reading/ mentoring program for disadvantaged youth.

Haley Howard steps off the court and onto the sidelines as she begins her coaching career at the same place her playing career ended. A 2014 second team AllOAC selection, Howard became the first player in school history to lead the team in scoring, rebounding and assists.

Ron “Tuck” Conner is in his first season as an assistant coach with the women’s basketball program. Conner brings more than 31 years of coaching experience to the Wilmington sidelines. He founded Team Ohio AAU Basketball Club in 1983, and is still a head coach with the summer program. The Team Ohio Basketball Club has made 46 national tournament appearances with 21 teams finishing in the 10 top, eleven teams in the top 5, two runners-up and six winning national championships. Prior to the Nationals, 31 teams won Ohio titles and 12 were state runners-up. He has four high school stops and a stint at Ohio University on his resume.

Mary is a very skilled player who can play anywhere on the court. She will be playing inside for us this year, but her outside shooting and her passing ability will cause opponents problems.

COACHES COMMENTS

Meranda will compete for time on the Wing. She plays with a lot of intensity and will bring energy to the court.

COACHES COMMENTS

Emily comes from a winning program, where she helped lead her team to the State championship game last season. She has the ability to stretch the floor as a post.

Heather is coming off a decorated High School career where she finished as the school’s all-time leading scorer and rebounder. Hopefully she will be able to make the adjustment to the college game and bring those same skills to the table.

2013-14 Season Recap

It was a season of ups and downs for the 2013-14 Fightin’ Quakers, but a lot of positives can be taken from the end results. “I was really happy with the progress our team made this year,” said Wilmington head coach Jerry Scheve. “We had a lot of holes to fill, but by the end of the year I felt we could play with anyone in the league. Our four seniors were the key to our success.” One of the highlights of the season came as WC fought back from down 10 with 37 seconds remaining to record a 103-102 victory over Marietta on January 25. It marked the sixth win in a seven-game stretch. But Wilmington went on to lose seven of its last 10, including a 57-53 loss to eventual OAC tournament champion Capital in the OAC Tournament. Senior Haley Howard became the first player in school history to lead the team in scoring (13.7), rebounding (5.3) and assists (3.7) en route to earning second-team All-OAC honors. She also earned Academic All-OAC honors. Senior Mackenzie Wippel was named honorable mention All-OAC after averaging 12.4 points and 5.3 rebounds per game, both second on the team. A pair of freshmen Brittaney Jefferson and Hannah Haeseker contributed well in their first season as Fightin’ Quakers. Senior Bethany Ahrens and sophomore Kirsten Glick also earned Academic All-OAC honors.

The Conference is older than the World Series and even the NCAA itself, and has survived two World Wars, the Great Depression, the Korean War and the Vietnam Conflict. From a modest beginning of six charter members in 1902, the OAC grew to as many as 24 members in the mid-1920’s. Through the years a total of 31 colleges and universities at one time or another have been members of the OAC. Currently, the Conference consists of 10 members: BaldwinWallace University, Capital University, Heidelberg University, John Carroll University, Marietta College, University of Mount Union, Muskingum University, Ohio Northern University, Otterbein University and Wilmington College. Wilmington became the 31st OAC member school in July 1, 2000. The enrollments of the 10 OAC institutions range from 1,200 to 4,500. All of the schools were founded in the 19th century, and have long and outstanding academic reputations. While maintaining these high academic standards, OAC athletic teams and athletes have consistently enjoyed a great deal of success on a regional and national level. The athletic competition is viewed not as an end in itself, but as an extension of the edcational programs.

Athletic Training

Athletic Training at Wilmington College

SPECIALISTS IN THE PREVENTION, TREATMENT AND REHABILITATION OF SPORTS INJURIES Athletic training is an exciting and fast-paced allied medical profession. As an integral member of the athletic healthcare team, the certified athletic trainer (ATC) is educated in prevention, treatment, evaluation and rehabilitation of sports-related injuries and illnesses sustained by physically active people. Certified athletic trainers work closely with medical professionals in a wide range of settings that include high schools, colleges and universities, professional teams, sports medicine clinics, corporate fitness facilities and hospitals. In 2012, Wilmington’s athletic training program earned the maximum seven-year accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE). Students completing the Bachelor of Science degree program at WC are eligible for the National Athletic Trainers’ Association Board of Certification (NATABOC) examination to become a certified athletic trainer. Students also are eligible for the Ohio licensing exam upon earning their ATC credentials. All athletic training students are considered pre-professional during their first two semesters. After satisfactory completion of the pre-professional requirements, students are advanced to the professional phase of the curriculum, including advanced clinical education.

WC ATHLETIC TRAINING SCHOLARSHIP

All students accepted into the athletic training program receive $5,000 in the scholarships over three years. Students receive $1,500 their sophomore and junior years, and $2,000 their senior year.

ATHLETIC TRAINING INTERNSHIPS

WC interns get to experience first-hand the full scope of sports medicine. Some of WC’s most recent internship sites in the CincinBeacon Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine and many area clinics and high schools.

NATIONAL PROGRAM RECOGNITION

Wilmington students have received an unprecedented six NATA scholarships. One graduate earned the highest score on the national certification exam. WC’s program also has been feature on the front cover of the NATA News and in The Chronicle of Higher Education.

About Wilmington As a school founded by Quakers, Wilmington College embraces persons from all backgrounds, faiths and philosophies, and promotes in its program and activities such values as integrity, diversity, community, service, peace and social justice, and respect for all persons. The college also values international cultures and facilitates courses in global studies, as well as accommodating long-and short-term study-abroad and touring opportunities.

While Wilmington offers such popular majors as education,

business administration, biology, criminal justice, sports management, social work and pre-professional, some of its more unique academic areas are the highly acclaimed agriculture program and its athletic training/sports medicine program, which are considered among the best in the nation. Popular co-curricular activities for students are the numerous campus organizations at Wilmington that range from fraternities and sororities to faith-based groups, music and drama, publications, student government and service learning. Wilmington regularly hosts entertainment programs designed especially for college students, as well as those open to the greater community such as its highly acclaimed annual peace symposium and Issues & Artists Series, which has brought to campus unique entertainers, provocative and informative speakers, and entities representing diverse American and international cultures.

Much has changed at Wilmington College since students

gained national fame for building a dormitory in 1948. But a constant throughout the college’s 141-year history has been the transforming nature of the Wilmington College experience.

Students leave Wilmington with the tools to succeed as they

engage in careers or further their education in today’s rapidly changing world. They also bring with them a wealth of knowledge and experience gained from the liberal arts, the embodiment of well-rounded individuals able to think critically and appreciate the role the arts, sciences and humanities play in a fulfilling life. They also realize that service to others is often an important road to self-realization.

Indeed, since 1870, Wilmington College has prepared stu-

dents to make a living, make a life and make a difference.

Why We Play Division III Athletics It’s not about getting a scholarship, getting drafted, or making SportsCenter. It’s a deep need in us that comes from the heart. We need to practice, to play, to lift, to hustle, to sweat. We do it all for our teammates and for the student in our calculus class that we don’t even know. We don’t practice with a future major league first baseman; we practice with a future sports agent. We don’t lift weights with a future Olympic wrestler; we lift with a future doctor. We don’t run with a future Wimbledon champion; we run with a future CEO. It’s a bigger part of us than our friends and family can understand. Sometimes we play for 2,000 fans; sometimes 25. But we still play hard. You cheer for us because you know us. You know more than just our names. Like all of you, we are students first. We don’t sign autographs. But we do sign graduate school applications, MCAT exams, and student body petitions. When we miss a kick or strike out, we don’t let down an entire state. We only let down our teammates, coaches, and fans. But the hurt is still the same. We train hard, lift, throw, run, kick, tackle, shoot, dribble, and lift some more, and in the morning we go to class. And in that class we are nothing more than students. It’s about pride - in ourselves, in our school. It’s about our love and passion for the game. And when it’s over, when we walk off that court or field for the last time, our hearts crumble. Those tears are real. But deep down inside, we are very proud of ourselves. We will forever be what few can claim ... college athletes.
