Season Preview and right now, because of injuries, we need her at the point guard position. She has stepped in there and done a great job. Her leadership on the court has been outstanding.” Sophomores Savannah Hooper (Leesburg, OH/ Wilmington) and Meranda Wilson (Marysville, OH/ Marysville) bring different aspects to the Wilmington backcourt. “Savannah is our best shooter, and I think she is much more comfortable this year,” said Scheve. “I look for her to step us this year, and Meranda has really improved.” Ja’Cole Tabor As good and versatile as the Wilmington backcourt will be, Wilmington’s front court will be the key to the Fightin’ Quakers’ success. “Number one; there is a lot of competition there,” said Scheve. “We have three players coming back that have played a lot and a fourth returner that is solid player slowed by injuries and we have some freshmen as well.” Juniors Mary Moyer (Martinsville, OH/Clinton Massie) and Hannah Haeseker (Germantown, OH/Valley View), along with sophomore Emily Smith (Bellbrook, OH/Bellbrook), senior Alexandria Kingsbery (Lima, OH/Central Catholic) and sophomore Emily Harman (Versailles, OH/Versailles) return in the post. “Obviously you start with Mary Moyer,” said Scheve. “She had a good season for us last year. She is as hard of worker as we have on the team, and she will lead by example.” Moyer finished last season averaged 9.1 points per game and is the top returning rebounder with 5.2 boards per contest. Haeseker, after a solid freshman season, struggled early last season with injuries. She played in 26 of 27 games, averaging 3.4 points and 4.9 rebounds. Smith added 3.5 points and 2.3 boards, while Kingsbery tallied 2.4 points and 1.9 rebounds. “She has some injuries last year, and definitely didn’t start the way she played her freshman year,” Scheve said of Haeseker. “But at the end of the year, she was playing better that she ever has, and I think that will continue.” Follow us on Twitter: @DubCQuakers l #WeRDubC l Like us on Facebook: DubCQuakers l Instagram: DubCQuakers

The Wilmington College women’s basketball program returns three of its top four scorers from a season ago, and will be looking to challenge the upper echelon of the Ohio Athletic Conference. “We graduated three solid starters from last year’s team, and they will be difficult to replace, especially on the defensive end,” said Wilmington head coach Jerry Scheve. “We have twelve returning players, nine of whom have had extensive playing time, with the other three knocking on the door. While we don’t have any gaping holes where we need freshmen to step in, I think we have some that have the ability to do just that. Alexandria Kingsbery Defense is going to be our real question mark, and we are going to have work very hard to get where we need to be on that end of the floor.” Junior Brittaney Jefferson (Dayton, OH/Chaminade Julienne) is the team’s top returning scorer despite coming off the bench in all 27 games. The guard averaged more than 20 minutes per game, while scoring 9.5 points per game. Not only will be counted on to score, she will be asked to continue her defensive presence. She finished ninth in the league with 1.8 steals per game. “Brittaney has turned herself into an all-league performer,” said Scheve. “One on one, she is as good as any player in the league. She can really score; she can shoot the three, she can get to the basket. She is just a hard player to guard.” Joining Jefferson in the backcourt will be running mate Ellie Kivell (West Chester, OH/Lakota West), who Scheve says “bring an explosiveness to the point guard position.” Kivell played in 20 games, coming off the bench in all of them, and was fourth on the team in scoring with 6.7 points per game. She was second on the team with 2.0 assists per game. Junior Ja’Cole Tabor (Dayton, OH/Chaminade Julienne) will move to the point guard position as senior Ashley Andracki (Columbus, OH/Bishop Watterson will miss the season with an injury. Tabor has dealt with her share of injuries over the last two seasons, and played in 19 games a season ago. “Ja’Cole is a very versatile player who can play any position on the court,” said Scheve. “We can put her wherever we need to,

Head Coach Jerry Scheve In his 24 years on the Wilmington sideline, Ohio Basketball Hall of Famer Jerry Scheve has won more than 400 games. For Scheve — who was named the National Coach of the Year after leading the Fightin’ Quakers to the 2003-04 NCAA Division III national championship — it is an enduring love for basketball, not victory milestones, that keeps his coaching fire burning. “I coached my first team when I was 16 years old,” Scheve said. “After I got out of college I started coaching again. As I was trying to find a career I knew the only thing I really enjoyed was coaching basketball. I remember telling myself that I didn’t know what else I’m going to do, but I know I’m always going to coach basketball, and I have. I’ve done it because of everything that’s involved with it — the kids, the game itself, the competitive part of it.” Since coming to Wilmington in 1990, Scheve’s teams have been the epitome of competitive, winning eight regular season and seven conference tournament titles. The 2003-04 national championship season was preceded by three National Tournament appearances that included trips to the “Elite Eight” and “Sweet 16” in 2002 and 2003, respectively. Wilmington advanced to the second round of the 2007 NCAA Tournament and returned to the NCAA Tournament in 2008. At Wilmington, Scheve has averaged more than 19 wins per season. Eleven of his 21 teams have won at least 20 games. The Fightin’ Quakers have won at least 20 games 10 of the past 15 years. The numbers are impressive, if not awesome, but they are not the numbers Scheve is focused on. “The wins are nice, but there are other numbers we concentrate on to get the wins,” Scheve said. “One goal we have every year is to make more free throws than our opponents shoot. It’s a real difficult goal to attain, but when you do it — and we have done it — it just indicates you’re doing a lot of things right. Number one, you’re getting to the foul line. Number two, you’re not fouling; you’re getting the other teams’ good players into foul trouble and you’re not getting your own people into foul trouble. It means you’re playing smart offensively and it means you’re playing smart defensively. When you do those things, you’re going to be successful.” Scheve also has been named Great Lakes Region Coach of the Year, Ohio Women’s Basketball Coach of the Year, and Coach of the Year in the AMC, HCAC and OAC. He will be inducted into the Ohio Basketball Hall of Fame in February 2014.

Assistant Coach Allan King, Jr. Assistant Coach Allan King returns to Wilmington for his second stint as an assistant women’s basketball coach. King was an assistant for the Quakers from 2005 to 2007. He will also serve at the assistant softball coach. He comes to WC after serving as the head girls basketball coach at Russia High School, where they won the district championship in 2012 for the first time in 12 years. The Raiders posted three straight winning seasons under King. After leaving Wilmington in 2007, he went on to serve as the head women’s basketball coach at the University of Pittsburgh Bradford. King took over a program with four players upon his arrival and won 11 games in his second season. He was also the strength and conditioning coach, and created a reading/ mentoring program for disadvantaged youth.

2014-15 Season Recap

What started out as a promising season ended in the Ohio Athletic Conference quarterfinals for the third straight season as the women’s basketball team finished 15-12 overall, 9-9 in the OAC. “It was an up and down season,” said women’s basketball head coach Jerry Scheve. “Our players fought hard all year long, and I was very happy with what they accomplished. Our three seniors each had their best year individually, and were all strong leaders for the underclassmen.” The Fightin’ Quakers started the season winning six straight games to rise to No. 22 nationally. However, a three-game losing streak dropped Wilmington from the rankings. Senior Courtney Tucker who was named Wilmington’s Female Athlete of the Year, was named firstteam All-OAC after leading the team with 11.1 points and 6.4 rebounds per game. The teams best perimeter defender, Tucker finished with her highest scoring average of her four-year career. Her 72 steals ranked her second in the OAC, and was the fourth-highest single-season performance in school history. She leaves Wilmington fifth all-time in steals. Sophomore Brittaney Jefferson earned honorable mention honors, and was the only player in the OAC to earn all-conference distinction without making a single start. She was second on the team with 9.5 points and ninth in the league with 1.8 steals per game. Senior Kirsten Glick, along with sophomores Mary Moyer and Hannah Haeseker, earned Academic All-OAC.

The Conference is older than the World Series and even the NCAA itself, and has survived two World Wars, the Great Depression, the Korean War and the Vietnam Conflict. From a modest beginning of six charter members in 1902, the OAC grew to as many as 24 members in the mid-1920’s. Through the years a total of 31 colleges and universities at one time or another have been members of the OAC. Currently, the Conference consists of 10 members: BaldwinWallace University, Capital University, Heidelberg University, John Carroll University, Marietta College, University of Mount Union, Muskingum University, Ohio Northern University, Otterbein University and Wilmington College. Wilmington became the 31st OAC member school in July 1, 2000. The enrollments of the 10 OAC institutions range from 1,200 to 4,500. All of the schools were founded in the 19th century, and have long and outstanding academic reputations. While maintaining these high academic standards, OAC athletic teams and athletes have consistently enjoyed a great deal of success on a regional and national level. The athletic competition is viewed not as an end in itself, but as an extension of the edcational programs.

Athletic Training

Athletic Training at Wilmington College

SPECIALISTS IN THE PREVENTION, TREATMENT AND REHABILITATION OF SPORTS INJURIES Athletic training is an exciting and fast-paced allied medical profession. As an integral member of the athletic healthcare team, the certified athletic trainer (ATC) is educated in prevention, treatment, evaluation and rehabilitation of sports-related injuries and illnesses sustained by physically active people. Certified athletic trainers work closely with medical professionals in a wide range of settings that include high schools, colleges and universities, professional teams, sports medicine clinics, corporate fitness facilities and hospitals. In 2012, Wilmington’s athletic training program earned the maximum seven-year accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE). Students completing the Bachelor of Science degree program at WC are eligible for the National Athletic Trainers’ Association Board of Certification (NATABOC) examination to become a certified athletic trainer. Students also are eligible for the Ohio licensing exam upon earning their ATC credentials. All athletic training students are considered pre-professional during their first two semesters. After satisfactory completion of the pre-professional requirements, students are advanced to the professional phase of the curriculum, including advanced clinical education.

WC ATHLETIC TRAINING SCHOLARSHIP

All students accepted into the athletic training program receive $5,000 in the scholarships over three years. Students receive $1,500 their sophomore and junior years, and $2,000 their senior year.

ATHLETIC TRAINING INTERNSHIPS

WC interns get to experience first-hand the full scope of sports medicine. Some of WC’s most recent internship sites in the CincinBeacon Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine and many area clinics and high schools.

NATIONAL PROGRAM RECOGNITION

Wilmington students have received an unprecedented six NATA scholarships. One graduate earned the highest score on the national certification exam. WC’s program also has been feature on the front cover of the NATA News and in The Chronicle of Higher Education.

About Wilmington As a school founded by Quakers, Wilmington College embraces persons from all backgrounds, faiths and philosophies, and promotes in its program and activities such values as integrity, diversity, community, service, peace and social justice, and respect for all persons. The college also values international cultures and facilitates courses in global studies, as well as accommodating long-and short-term study-abroad and touring opportunities.

While Wilmington offers such popular majors as education,

business administration, biology, criminal justice, sports management, social work and pre-professional, some of its more unique academic areas are the highly acclaimed agriculture program and its athletic training/sports medicine program, which are considered among the best in the nation. Popular co-curricular activities for students are the numerous campus organizations at Wilmington that range from fraternities and sororities to faith-based groups, music and drama, publications, student government and service learning. Wilmington regularly hosts entertainment programs designed especially for college students, as well as those open to the greater community such as its highly acclaimed annual peace symposium and Issues & Artists Series, which has brought to campus unique entertainers, provocative and informative speakers, and entities representing diverse American and international cultures.

Much has changed at Wilmington College since students

gained national fame for building a dormitory in 1948. But a constant throughout the college’s 141-year history has been the transforming nature of the Wilmington College experience.

Students leave Wilmington with the tools to succeed as they

engage in careers or further their education in today’s rapidly changing world. They also bring with them a wealth of knowledge and experience gained from the liberal arts, the embodiment of well-rounded individuals able to think critically and appreciate the role the arts, sciences and humanities play in a fulfilling life. They also realize that service to others is often an important road to self-realization.

Indeed, since 1870, Wilmington College has prepared stu-

dents to make a living, make a life and make a difference.

Why We Play Division III Athletics It’s not about getting a scholarship, getting drafted, or making SportsCenter. It’s a deep need in us that comes from the heart. We need to practice, to play, to lift, to hustle, to sweat. We do it all for our teammates and for the student in our calculus class that we don’t even know. We don’t practice with a future major league first baseman; we practice with a future sports agent. We don’t lift weights with a future Olympic wrestler; we lift with a future doctor. We don’t run with a future Wimbledon champion; we run with a future CEO. It’s a bigger part of us than our friends and family can understand. Sometimes we play for 2,000 fans; sometimes 25. But we still play hard. You cheer for us because you know us. You know more than just our names. Like all of you, we are students first. We don’t sign autographs. But we do sign graduate school applications, MCAT exams, and student body petitions. When we miss a kick or strike out, we don’t let down an entire state. We only let down our teammates, coaches, and fans. But the hurt is still the same. We train hard, lift, throw, run, kick, tackle, shoot, dribble, and lift some more, and in the morning we go to class. And in that class we are nothing more than students. It’s about pride - in ourselves, in our school. It’s about our love and passion for the game. And when it’s over, when we walk off that court or field for the last time, our hearts crumble. Those tears are real. But deep down inside, we are very proud of ourselves. We will forever be what few can claim ... college athletes.
