Season Preview
T
he 2013 season is destined to mark the first steps of a rebuilding process that hopes to return the Wilmington College football team back to near the top of the Ohio Athletic Conference. The new coaching staff, led by head coach Stacey Hairston, realizes its not going to happen overnight. Just don’t try to tell them that on Saturdays. “Reality tells me you have to take baby steps, you can’t just go out there from 1-9 to 9-1,” said Hairston. “That is what reality is, but on game day, I have a false sense of reality. I don’t have a reality. For me, it’s real simple. I am trying to win. The whole rebuilding thing is a process. You have to take baby steps, but on game day, there is no such thing as baby steps – I am trying to win.” While the ultimate goal is wins, and improving on the 1-29 record over the last three seasons, Hairston has other ways of determining whether the 2013 season is successful. “When I try to evaluate a successful season, it’s not exactly wins and losses,” said Hairston. “What are your mental thoughts going into the game, and going into the fourth quarter, do we have a chance to win. That is all I can ask. We have 10 games on the schedule, and in 10 games, if going to the fourth quarter we have a chance to win – that is a huge success because that is a big turnaround. That’s my goal. We play well enough through three quarters that the game is still in doubt in the fourth. Some games you are going to win, some you are going to lose – that is part of it. But if we don’t have a chance in the fourth quarter, something is wrong. It means we have some work to do.” The biggest challenge for the team will come in the trenches where the offensive line has been one of the most maligned position groups over the past couple of

seasons.
his way into making an impact.
They return six players that have made multiple starts along the line. Sophomores Tyler Johnson and Matt Buell anchor the line from the tackle position. Junior Jeremy Welch has started 20 straight games at center, while juniors Tyler DeVore and Scott Duncan have manned the guard positions. Junior Matt Stooksbury, who moved to tackle last in the season, moves back to his natural tight end position.
Who ever comes out of the camp battles will be given the main responsibility of protecting senior quarterback Brandon Arehart. The three-year starter comes into the season as the only non-freshman signal caller on the roster.
However, despite having the experience, the offensive linecould have the most turnover.
“I have been extremely impressed with Brandon,” said Hairston. “Reality is reality, and he is our saving grace right now. He is such an intelligent man. He is truly a blessing for us. Bringing in a new offense, it’s not simple to pick up and it’s not simple to have success right away, and he gives us that chance.”
“Reality tells me I will have at least two freshmen starting and it’s possible three,” said Hairston. “I understand the trials and tribulations in having a freshman start on the offensive line. But talent-wise and skill-wise, they are an upgrade from what we had in the past.”
He comes into his final collegiate season ranked fifth in nearly every Wilmington career passing category with 4,414 yards on 387 completions with 789 attempts and 27 touchdowns. He is sixth with 34 interceptions.
Sophomore Ian Stewart could also push
Hairston added that he expected Arehart to

Season Preview have the best season of his career. While the quarterback gets much of the blame for loss and much of the credit for wins, Arehart needs weapons to ultimately be successful. “The wide receiver group is, offensively, our best position,” said Hairston. “The talent we have there can potentially make life easier for the offensive line, quarterbacks and even the running backs. There is some skill there, and we have to use it to our best advantage.”
bare. Freshman Zach Cooper joined the team at the start of the winter semester, and participated in spring practice. Sophomore Zach Cumby and freshman Jerry Williams III join Koyfis in the fullback battle. Defensively, Wilmington has a solid foundation along the defensive line. Two-time All-OAC performer Donnie Ary is joined by All-OAC selection Chris Ferguson, senior Aaron Day and sophomore Linden Ayoki to form a formidable foursome.
Wilmington returns its top receiving threat in sophomore Jeremy Duncan. The 6-5 receiver led the team with 24 catches for 405 yards and two touchdowns. His 405 yards were more that twice as much as his nearest teammate.
Ary led all WC defensive linemen with 54 tackles and was second with 12 tackles for loss, while Ferguson added team-highs with 13 tackles for loss and five sacks to go along with 31 tackles. Day chipped in with 29 tackles.
The coaching staff thinks Duncan has only scratched the surface of his ability,
However, their main duty in the new defensive scheme is to eat up blockers and enable the linebackers to make plays.
“My thing is for him to get into his mind and have him realize the threat that he poses to any defense in the nation,” Hairston added. “Standing at 6-4, 6-5, 215 pounds, he is never covered. Most defensive backs stand at 5-9, 5-10, he should be dominating these guys. Any team that lines up one-on-one against us, we have to win. We will take our shot right there, and I will put my money on him.” Duncan isn’t the only receiver that will turn heads this season. Seniors Antonio Turner, Stephen Donoghue and Kyle Akers bring a physical presence to the position, while sophomore Cody Reigelsperger made the greatest impression during the spring camp. The Fightin’ Quakers will turn to someone not on the roster at the end of last season at running back. Sophomore Alex Koyfis moves to fullback after leading the team in rushing, and the graduation of its two other rushers, have left the spot almost
The main playmaker is sophomore Nick Williams, who will be moving from outside linebacker to the middle. In his five games last season, Williams was probably the best player on the team. He finished seventh with 43 tackles while playing just half the season. His 8.6 tackles per game was the highest average on the team. “Based on what he has shown me in his limited time, going into spring ball, I want my best defensive guy in the middle,” said Hairston. “He has turned into a true leader of this defense.” Moving Williams to the middle isn’t the only change to the unit as sophomore Amari Bryant moves from cornerback to weakside linebacker. He played in all 10 games last season with 21 tackles. The hottest position battle will be on the strongside, where juniors Jared Burson and Dakota Hruby, along with sophomore Jacob Fugate will battle a host of incom-

ing freshman for the position. Junior Jason Phillips returns to the other middle linebacker position after leading the team in four forced fumbles, while registering 59 tackles. Hairston said his physical nature and run stopping ability is key to the ‘Bob’ linebacker position. Senior Trevor Hooker and junior Joe Joe Knecht return to the defensive backfield after starting all 10 games at free safety and cornerback, respectively. Hooker, a two-year starter, finished the season with 59 tackles and brings intangibles and skill to the position. “Trevor is clearly the most technically sound defensive back we have,” said Hairston. “After watching him this spring, I am very happy to have him. He is the quarterback of the defense. He has to be able to run the defense, and when the quarterbacks make mistakes, and try to thread the ball where it’s not supposed to be, he has to make them pay for it.” Knecht led the team with 76 tackles and his lone interception sealed Wilmington’s Homecoming victory over Marietta. Junior Eric Watts moves to strong safety, and has the inside track on beginning the season as the starter. Juniors Drew Dutoi and R.J. Zygarowski, along with sophomore Olof Eriksson are competing at the other corner position. While there are no questions Hruby will be the team’s long snapper, the Quakers have plenty of questions to answer in the kicking game. A true freshman will have to handle the punting duties, while sophomore kickers Cole Voltz and Geremie Dart have yet to appear in a college game. Wilmington opens the season 1:30 p.m. September 7th as the Fightin’ Quakers host Olivet in non-conference action.

Head Coach Stacey Hairston Wilmington College has selected Stacey Hairston to guide the Quakers’ football program as its new head coach. The former professional football player with the Dallas Cowboys and Cleveland Browns spent both his collegiate playing career and a dozen years as an assistant coach at conference rival Ohio Northern University. Terry Rupert, vice president for athletics administration and director of athletics, announced Hairston’s hiring on December 19, following an extensive national search to succeed Ken Minor, who left the team at mid-season after nearly two and a half years as head coach. “We are thrilled to hire a coach with Stacey’s experience and knowledge of the Ohio Athletic Conference,” Rupert said. “His extensive playing and coaching experience will benefit the football team. He impressed the selection committee with his thorough plan to build our football program.” Hairston spent the past season as the defensive coordinator at Bluefield College (VA) in the school’s first varsity season. The Columbus native also served for two seasons as an assistant coach for the Edmonton Eskimos of the Canadian Football League. “I have coached in the OAC and have seen Wilmington from afar,” Hairston said. “It’s a good, quality school in a good location. The location is ideal; near Cincinnati, Springfield, Dayton and Columbus. You have to hit those areas hard to have a chance.” Not only does Hairston bring extensive coaching experience to the table, he played professional football for seven years. After being signed as a free agent in 1989 by the Dallas Cowboys, Hairston spent a year in Dallas before playing three seasons north of the border as a three-year starting defensive back for the Saskatchewan Roughriders.
6
He returned to the NFL for three seasons with the Cleveland Browns, where he was an integral part of the league’s topranked defense in 1994. Hairston coached ONU’s defensive backs and special teams for seven seasons After a short stint as the team’s interim head coach, he was promoted to co-defensive coordinator and co-special teams coordinator, where he stayed until 2008.

Greg Forest Offensive Coordinator Greg Forest is in his first season as the Wilmington College offensive coordinator after two seasons at Division III Buffalo State, where he was the team’s offensive coordinator in 2012. The BSU Bengals averaged 23.5 points per game and were second in the Empire 8 in rushing with 270.9 yards per game. Forest, a 1992 graduate of Ohio Northern, worked under current Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly at Central Michigan and Cincinnati before joining the staff at Buffalo. He spent one season as the Bulls’ offensive coordinator. He was instrumental as UC’s quarterbacks coach in one of Cincinnati’s BIG EAST title runs as, due to injuries, the Bearcats were forced to use five different quarterbacks in their unbeaten season. He also oversaw the growth and development of two-time BIG EAST quarterback and former Carolina Panther Tony Pike. The 6-6 Pike threw for 2,520 yards and 29 touchdowns as the Bearcats scored a school record 502 points en route to their second straight BIG EAST championship.
Bryce Bozeman Defensive Line/Strength and Conditioning Bryce Bozman is in his first season as the defensive line coach/strength & conditioning coach at Wilmington. Bozman follows Hairston from Bluefield College, where he served as the part-time defensive line coach for the Rams. A veteran of the United States Army, he spent nearly two years in Iraq and Afghanistan. Following his tours, Bozman he has lent his strength and conditioning expertise at a variety of levels from high school to college to professional indoor football.
Marque Jones Receivers Marque Jones has been an integral part of Wilmington College football for more than three decades. Jones stresses all phases of the wide receiver position, and the results speak for themselves. Four Wilmington College receivers — most recently Jon Cain — have received All-American honors under Jones’ tutelage.
Andrew Fries Offensive Line/Recruiting Coordinator Andrew Fries is in his first season at Wilmington College as the offensive line coach and recruiting coordinator. After one year away from the Ohio Athletic Conference, Fries returns to Ohio. A former player and graduate assistant at Otterbein, Fries spent the past year as the offensive line coach/ running game coordinator at Lakeland College. The Muskies averaged 157.4 yards on the ground in 2012, and one of his linemen earned second team All-Northern Athletics Conference. As a player, Fries helped Otterbein to a 25-16 record, including the school’s first-ever playoff appearance in 2008. He earned first team All-OAC in both 2007 and 2008. He was voted OAC Lineman of the Year in 2008, as well as being named NCAA Division III second team All-Region and third team All-American.

His most productive season was 1975, when he hauled in 21 receptions for 310 yards. Jones graduated from Wilmington in 1977 with a business administration degree and attended University of Cincinnati on a graduate honor scholarship. In 1979, he received a master’s in marketing from UC. Jones and his wife, Terri, reside in Wilmington.

Herbert H. Hufford III Offensive Intern
Will Isaac returns to the Quaker sideline for his 11th year as an assistant coach and eighth season as running backs coach. Isaac is no stranger to the position he coaches. In 2002, he became just the fifth running back in Wilmington College history to eclipse the 1,000-yard mark in a season when he gained 1,006 yards in 10 games. In 2001 he narrowly missed the 1,000-yard plateau, rushing for 901.
Herbert H. Hufford III is in his first season as an offensive intern on the Wilmington College coaching staff. He comes to WC after spending last season at Dean College as the tight ends coach and video coordinator. He held a similar position at Ohio Northern University, where he earned his degree, in 2010.
Despite an injury-shortened career, Isaac ranks third in Wilmington College history in career rushing yards with 2,191, second in rushing attempts with 545 and fourth in rushing touchdowns with 17. Isaac, his daughter, Mya Jackson, and his wife, Kim, reside in Wilmington.

The Ohio Athletic Conference, the third-oldest conference in college athletics, is predated only by the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (1888) and the Big Ten (1895). The Conference is older than the World Series and even the NCAA itself, and has survived two World Wars, the Great Depression, the Korean War and the Vietnam Conflict. From a modest beginning of six charter members in 1902, the OAC grew to as many as 24 members in the mid-1920’s. Through the years a total of 31 colleges and universities at one time or another have been members of the OAC. Currently, the Conference consists of 10 members: Baldwin-Wallace University, Capital University, Heidelberg University, John Carroll University, Marietta College, University of Mount Union, Muskingum University, Ohio Northern University, Otterbein University and Wilmington College. Wilmington became the 31st OAC member school in July 1, 2000. The enrollments of the 10 OAC institutions range from 1,200 to 4,500. All of the schools were founded in the 19th century, and have long and outstanding academic reputations. While maintaining these high academic standards, OAC athletic teams and athletes have consistently enjoyed a great deal of success on a regional and national level. The athletic competition is viewed not as an end in itself, but as an extension of the edcational programs.

2012 Recap
With a 35-yard field goal with 31 seconds left in Wilmington’s homecoming game against Marietta, the Quakers 32-game losing streak came to an end. WC finished the season 1-9 overall. The season featured a midseason change at the top, and some tough outcomes. However, the sight of college athletes experiencing success – many of them for the first time as college players – was something that was remarkable. “We made some strides to improving the team,” said interim head coach Jay Niswonger. “I felt that there were many teachable moments along the way even though the record didn’t show. The highlight for these kids was snapping that 32-game losing streak. Getting that win for these kids was a shot in the arm for this group. “I don’t think too many people at Homecoming would have believed we could drive the
ball with 1:50 left in the ball game (from) on our own 20 with one timeout and win a ball game. The kids did and the celebration was on. Homecoming is a lot more fun with a win than a loss. The focus was trying to get a little better every day as a player then see if we got better on Saturday. We as coaches, tried to stay as upbeat and positive as we could work hard and trying to improve the squad no matter whom we played. Injuries, lack of depth, just the physicality of playing in the OAC takes its toll.”
Ferguson made his impact behind the line of scrimmage, leading the team with 13 tackles for loss and five sacks. His total represented more than half of the team’s sack total of nine. He also was tied for the team lead in quarterback pressures and fumble recoveries.
For the second year in a row, junior Donnie Ary earned second-team recognition. Senior kicker Max Gabbard and junior defensive lineman Chris Ferguson were named honorable mention.
Gabbard’s biggest moment of the season came when his career-long 35-yard field goal gave Wilmington its only victory of the season, a 13-12 win over Marietta. Gabbard added a field goal to end the third quarter to set up his final kick. On the season, he converted all of his extra points and was 3-of-5 on field goal attempts.
Ary led all Wilmington defensive linemen in tackles with 54 and was second with 12 tackles for loss. His ability to absorb and defeat constant double-teams helped free up linebackers Gunner Calhoun, Jason Phillips and Nick Wil-
Quarterback Brandon Arehart finished with highest GPA of all WC student-athletes with a 3.96. He was joined on the All-Academic team by junior Kyle Akers , senior Kostas Koyfis and junior Kolt McDaniel.

WC All-Americans
Gary Worthy and Brandon Tisdale are part of Wilkmington College’s All-American tradition. Worthy, a three-time All-American running back for the Quakers, still owns every single-season and career rushing record 30 years after his storied WC career ended. A standout defensive tackle, Tisdale was the last Quaker to earn multiple All-American honors. He was honored in 2003 and 2004 for his exploits on the gridiron. Nearly a decade later, he still holds the career record for sacks and tackles for loss. Since 1972, 76 Quakers have earned All-American honors, the most recent being Bryce Martin in 2010. In the classroom, the Quakers have been equally accomplished with 25 WC football players receiving either Academic All-American or Academic All-District honors since 1982. Who will be the next Quaker to make national headlines? Stay tuned ‌ the next All-American or Academic All-American could be taking the field or heading to the classroom this season.

Townsend Field at Williams Stadium Townsend Field at Williams Stadium is the home of Wilmington College and Wilmington High School football and lacrosse teams. The facility also features Beckett Track, which hosts numerous collegiate and high school track and field meets. In 2008, the playing field at Townsend Field was resurfaced with synthetic turf and new lighting was installed, giving Wilmington the ability to expand the number of collegiate and high school events hosted by Williams Stadium. Townsend Field has been the source of synergy for the advancement of scores of football careers. Included on the list of greats who called WC home are former NFL executive Kirk Mee and coaching Hall of Famer Bill Ramseyer. Seventy-six Wilmington College players have earned All-America honors, and although nearby Miami University is known as the “cradle of coaches, Wilmington has helped produce dozens of coaches who have excelled at the high school and collegiate levels.

Athletic Training at Wilmington College SPECIALISTS IN THE PREVENTION, TREATMENT AND REHABILITATION OF SPORTS INJURIES Athletic training is an exciting and fast-paced allied medical profession. As an integral member of the athletic healthcare team, the certified athletic trainer (ATC) is educated in prevention, treatment, evaluation and rehabilitation of sports-related injuries and illnesses sustained by physically active people. Certified athletic trainers work closely with medical professionals in a wide range of settings that include high schools, colleges and universities, professional teams, sports medicine clinics, corporate fitness facilities and hospitals. In 2012, Wilmington’s athletic training program earned the maximum seven-year accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE). Students completing the Bachelor of Science degree program at WC are eligible for the National Athletic Trainers’ Association Board of Certification (NATABOC) examination to become a certified athletic trainer. Students also are eligible for the Ohio licensing exam upon earning their ATC credentials. All athletic training students are considered pre-professional during their first two semesters. After satisfactory completion of the pre-professional requirements, students are advanced to the professional phase of the curriculum, including advanced clinical education.
WC ATHLETIC TRAINING SCHOLARSHIP All students accepted into the athletic training program receive $5,000 in the scholarships over three years. Students receive $1,500 their sophomore and junior years, and $2,000 their senior year.
ATHLETIC TRAINING INTERNSHIPS WC interns get to experience first-hand the full scope of sports medicine. Some of WC’s most recent internship sites in the CincinBeacon Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine and many area clinics and high schools.

As a school founded by Quakers, Wilmington College embraces persons from all backgrounds, faiths and philosophies, and promotes in its program and activities such values as integrity, diversity, community, service, peace and social justice, and respect for all persons. The college also values international cultures and facilitates courses in global studies, as well as accommodating long-and shortterm study-abroad and touring opportunities. While Wilmington offers such popular majors as education, business administration, biology, criminal justice, sports management, social work and pre-professional, some of its more unique academic areas are the highly acclaimed agriculture program and its athletic training/ sports medicine program, which are considered among the best in the nation. Popular co-curricular activities for students are the numerous campus organizations at Wilmington that range from fraternities and sororities to faith-based groups, music and drama, publications, student government and service learning. Wilmington regularly hosts entertainment programs designed especially for college students, as well as those open to the greater community such as its highly acclaimed annual peace symposium and Issues & Artists Series, which has brought to campus unique entertainers, provocative and informative speakers, and entities representing diverse American and international cultures. Much has changed at Wilmington College since students gained national fame for building a dormitory in 1948. But a constant throughout the college’s 141-year history has been the transforming nature of the Wilmington College experience. Students leave Wilmington with the tools to succeed as they engage in careers or further their education in today’s rapidly changing world. They also bring with them a wealth of knowledge and experience gained from the liberal arts, the embodiment of well-rounded individuals able to think critically and appreciate the role the arts, sciences and humanities play in a fulfilling life. They also realize that service to others is often an important road to self-realization. Indeed, since 1870, Wilmington College has prepared students to make a living, make a life and make a difference.

Why We Play Division III Athletics It’s not about getting a scholarship, getting drafted, or making SportsCenter. It’s a deep need in us that comes from heart. We need to practice, to play, to lift, to hustle, to sweat. We do it all for our teammates and for the student in our calculus class that we don’t even know. We don’t practice with a future major league first baseman; we practice with a future sports agent. We don’t lift weights with a future Olympic wrestler; we lift with a future doctor. We don’t run with a future Wimbledon champion; we run with a future CEO. It’s a bigger part of us than our friends and family can understand. Sometimes we play for 2,000 fans; sometimes 25. But we still play hard. You cheer for us because you know us. You know more than just our names. Like all of you, we are students first. We don’t sign autographs. But we do sign graduate school applications, MCAT exams, and student body petitions. When we miss a kick or strike out, we don’t let down an entire state. We only let down our teammates, coaches, and fans. But the hurt is still the same. We train hard, lift, throw, run, kick, tackle, shoot, dribble, and lift some more, and in the morning we go to class. And in that class we are nothing more than students. It’s about pride - in ourselves, in our school. It’s about our love and passion for the game. And when it’s over, when we walk off that court or field for the last time, our hearts crumble. Those tears are real. But deep down inside, we are very proud of ourselves. We will forever be what few can claim ... college athletes.
