Season Preview

he Wilmington College men’s soccer team is looking to continue their move back up the Ohio Athletic Conference ladder, and 2013 could be the year.

“I’m very excited about the fall season as we return a veteran team that competed very well in 2012,” said Wilmington head coach Bud Lewis. “I expect that the OAC soccer programs will again be one of the most competitive conferences top to bottom in the country. We were disappointed with not going further in the OAC tournament last fall, but we gained some valuable experience at all positions and with several exciting recruits, we are hopeful to improve our play and compete for the OAC championship and the NCAA tournament. We struggled at the beginning of our season last fall and I know our players will be prepared to give a better performance in our early season tournaments and pre-conference matches that will prepare us for the grueling OAC conference schedule.” Junior Dan Wicks (Reading, OH/Reading), who earned All-OAC honors last season, returns after leading the team with five goals, four game-winners, and six assists. Wicks is joined in the midfield by junior Evan Schlagetter (Sidney, OH/Sidney), who appeared in 17 games with 16 starts. While Wicks and Schlagetter bring the experience, Lewis is excited about the potential of the rest of the group. Junior Taylor Estes (Reading, OH/Reading) and sophomore Ethan Zimpfer (Botkins, OH/Botkins) are expected to be fully recovered for the start of the season, but there are a host of rookies nipping at their heels. Freshmen Pablo Martinez (Clarksville, TN/Northeast), Albin Blomberg (Oreboro, Sweden/Virgin Smelar) and Marcus Tornberg (Stockholm, Sweden/Hersby Gymnasium) are all capable in diversifying the Wilmington midfield. “Our midfield is going to create more attacking plays,” said Lewis. “Midfield play maybe one of our strongest aspects. We have three players with a lot of midfield experience led by Wicks and Schlagetter. Both of those players are ready to go.”

Junior Alex Ruckman (Monroe, OH/Monroe) and freshman Alec Rivers (Ross, OH/Ross) could challenge for minutes in the midfield. With the midfield adding an extra dimension to the offense, a bulk of the scoring load will still fall on the forwards. Northern Kentucky University transfer Nick Toney (Morrow, OH/Little Miami) brings the composure near the net that the Quakers sometimes lack last season. Toney played in 18 games with eight starts for the Division I Norse. Getting senior Erik Hammar (Stockholm, Sweden/Ava Gymnasium) back to his goal-scoring form could be a huge benefit for Wilmington. He scored three goals in four games before suffering an injury in 2010, then scoring eight goals as a sophomore in another injury-plagued season. He added three goals a season ago. “We need to be more dangerous in the final third, and one

Season Preview Despite the presence of two all-region honorees, WC’s success could hinge on junior Drew Fields (Mariemont, OH/ Mariemont). “Drew Fields is going to be key to our success this year,” said Lewis. “One of our best players on attacking set pieces, he can play anyone of the positions in the back and wing midfield, so he is really a very versatile player in both the attacking and defensive roles. I expect him to have a breakout year for us.” The center back position is one of the few wide-open positions with Fields probably getting the first crack at stabilizing the middle. Cincinnati State transfer Brandon Klepach (Centerville, OH/Centerville) will also have a role in the back third, along with sophomore Jesse Buhrman (Westlake, OH/ Westlake).

of the ways to do that is increase the number of players in the penalty area or around the goal when you are attacking,” said Lewis. “I think collectively we will be very effective bringing the ball up, possessing and getting numbers in the box. We were hopeful for the resurgence of Erik Hammar to be somewhat like he was a couple of years ago.” Freshman Sam Bickel (Bremen, IN/Bremen) could factor in the forward rotation, along with Martinez. Additionally, all-region selections Henrik Hornnaess (Brumunddal, Norway/Hamar Katerdralskole) and Martin Holmquist (Karlstad, Sweden/Alvkulle Gymnasiet) are back for their senior and junior seasons, respectively. Hornnaess led the team with nine assists, mainly due to his ability to serve the ball of set pieces. Both are key components to the WC defense.

Senior Caleb Betz (Circleville, OH/Logan Elm), junior Taylor Henderson (Cincinnati, OH/Mariemont) and junior Ben McMahon (Loveland, OH/Little Miami) along with freshmen Alex Saunders (Lewis Center, OH/Olentangy), Aaron Basford (Monroe, OH/Monroe) and Stijn Van Wezel (Miller City, OH/Miller City-New Cleveland) will all push for minutes in the defensive rotation. Senior goalkeeper Anton Niklasson (Ockero, Sweden/ Frolundagymnasiet) has the inside track on claiming the starting job after playing in four games with two starts. He posted a goals against average of 0.96 and a save percentage of .733. However, Niklasson is coming off an injury. Should Niklasson not be ready for the start of the season, junior Tim Wiederhold (Fayetteville, OH/Wilmington) and freshmen Nick Baker (Indianapolis, IN/Decatur Central) will have to step in. During the Lewis era, the Quakers have always challenged themselves with five NCAA tournaments teams – Rochester, Transylvania, Centre, Thomas More and national runner up Ohio Northern – all on the schedule.

ud Lewis begins his 39th season at the helm of one of the nation’s most successful and respected programs. With 473 career victories, Lewis is among the winningest coaches in NCAA Division III history. Lewis’ Quakers have captured 11 conference championships and made 10 national tournament appearances, including a berth in the NAIA Final Four in 1986. Last year’s team posted an 10-8-1 record in a season and qualified for the Ohio Athletic Conference tournament “The bottom line is that I love to see a competitive team play. I love to see that we can match up and play the kind of soccer I am most capable of coaching. That requires a good technical level and a good understanding of how the game should be played. I have been very influenced by the Dutch and Spanish flavor of the game, and I see how it makes the game beautiful. We saw great goals scored, some great defending and great goalkeeping last year. I expect that we will be very competitive from the get-go this season,” Lewis said. Lewis came to Wilmington following an All-American playing career at Bowling Green State University and stints with the Cincinnati Comets of the American Soccer League and the Buffalo Blazers, not far from Rochester, N.Y. and Penfield High School, which he led to a New York state championship in 1970.

Wilmington has posted winning records 33 times over the past 37 seasons. “We are very proud of the tradition we have established at Wilmington College,” Lewis said. “The past couple years, we haven’t enjoyed the level of success we have become accustomed to, and we are anxious to re-establish that tradition. Success on the field is closely tied with success off the field. We feel that when we are winning as players, chances are very good that we also will be winning as people who are members of the campus community and beyond.” Lewis’ personal accomplishments comprise a seemingly unending list: eight-time NAIA District 22 Coach of the Year, six-time NSCAA Mideast Coach of the Year, three-time Ohio Coach of the Year, three-time Association of Mideast Colleges Coach of the Year and 2004 Ohio Athletic Conference Coach of the Year. Small-college soccer is Lewis’ passion. “I love the game and working with the student-athletes. It’s such a great opportunity,” Lewis said. “Most of these guys aren’t going to be playing beyond their years at Wilmington, so whatever we can do to shape and frame them as great young men is as important as winning games.” Lewis holds a master’s from The Ohio State University and serves as WC’s director of Greek Life and Wellness programs. He resides in Wilmington with his wife Margo. They have two sons, Gabriel and Andrew, a daughter Emily.

Despite his many successes as a player, Lewis’ early years as a coach provided few bright moments, as the Quakers won just six of 25 games in 1975 and 1976. “I came right into college coaching, as opposed to mentoring under somebody and really learning the ropes,” Lewis said. “I learned a lot of lessons the difficult way. But I did recognize fairly early on that we could run a very competitive program here. Our facilities, our location, our academic program here have given us a competitive edge that allows

Nick Kinder joined the Wilmington College coaching staff for the 2010 season, but he is anything but a stranger to the WC sideline.

Bernie Hernando is in his second season as an assistant coach for the men’s soccer program. A native of New Jersey and a graduate of Long Island University, Hernando brings an extensive and impressive resume as both a player and coach. Hernando played prep school soccer at St. Benedict’s Prep, in Newark, NJ, arguably the top high school boy’s soccer program in the country. He won state titles in all 3 years with the varsity program as well as being among the top ranked teams nationally by the NSCAA. He won numerous state and regional championships during his youth club days and consistently trained and competed domestically and internationally with various summer select programs including the NJ Olympic Development Program.

Kinder was a four-year mainstay during his career at Wilmington, starting 46 games and playing in 67. The midfielder/forward earned All-OAC and All-Ohio honors in 2009 and was a three-time Academic All-OAC pick. “Nick has been a great addition to our staff. He is very knowledgeable. His knowledge of the game and overall awareness of our program are invaluable,” Wilmington head coach Bud Lewis said. “The players really respect him. He has a nice demeanor that really benefits our team.”

He went on to play collegiate soccer at Long Island University, where as a freshman he was an integral part of the midfield which captured the Northeast Conference Tournament Championship and a berth in the NCAA Division I Tournament. Hernando has coached and trained soccer players since 2001 and comes to Wilmington College after a two-year stint at his alma mater, St. Benedict’s Prep. He worked with all levels of the program emphasizing players to take leadership roles on and off the field and stressed the importance of open communication between player and coach. His main focus was continuing the tradition of developing mature and disciplined players which began when former national team member Tab Ramos brought the program out of darkness in the early 1980’s. The notion of being a mature and disciplined player is the essence of what has brought much success and national recognition to St. Benedict’s Prep for nearly the past 3 decades. In 2010, St. Benedict’s Prep climbed the national rankings as high as #3 by ESPN and #5 from the NSCAA. More recently in 2011, the Benedict’s program swept through the competition allowing 6 goals with 18 shutouts and a final record of 24-0; adding its 7th National Championship as the #1 team in the nation by both ESPN and the NSCAA. Unable to play his first season with a foot injury, Ethan can play numerous roles for the team but will likely find most of his playing in the defense. 2012 Review Bud Lewis and the Quakers lived much of the 2012 season on the edge in advancing to the OAC semifinals in which they fell in overtime to John Carroll. The loss in extra time marked the fourth overtime match for Wilmington, and unfortunately, it was the only one that they suffered defeat. The season didn’t start the way many envisioned as Wilmington dropped its first two contest, and was 3-4 after seven games. In the four losses, the Quakers managed to find the net just once. With the season in the balance, the team looked within themselves – with the help of a heart-to-heart session following the 2-0 loss to Kenyon. From there, the Quakers marched onto a seven-game unbeaten streak. During the streak, they played four consecutive overtime matches and went 3-0-1 in those contests. However, the unbeaten streak was immediately followed by a stretch in which WC dropped four of the last five games to end the season. “Our 2012 season was another big step in our track back to the top of the Ohio Athletic Conference and return to the NCAA National Tournament stage,” said head coach Bud Lewis. “We struggled with several of our early season games as we worked through injuries and getting players in the right position for our team to be at our best. Finishing third in the OAC conference is proof that we are going in the right direction, losing in overtime at John Carroll in the OAC

semi’s will provide considerable motivation for next year’s team that only graduate one senior (Jesse Ingels).” Three players were honored by the OAC following the season as junior Henrik Hornaess (Brumunddal, Norway/Hamar Katerdralskole) and sophomore Martin Holquist (Karlstad, Sweden/Alvkulle Gymnasiet) were named first-team AllOAC. Sophomore Dan Wicks (Cincinnati, OH/Reading) was named honorable mention. Hornaess became one of Wilmington’s most dangerous weapons with his striking ability on set pieces, and he finished the season second in the OAC with 11 assists. Holmquist’s defensive prowess was one of the reasons for Wilmington’s success this season. He helped the Quakers record five shutouts this season. Holmquist was an honorable mention All-OAC selection last season. Wicks, who was the team’s captain, was truly the heart and soul of the soccer team. His development as a player is one of the reasons for Wilmington’s success in 2012. He led the team with five goals and was second with five assists. Academically, two sophomores, Joey Brown (Dayton, OH/ Bethel) and Evan Schlagetter (Sidney, OH/Sidney), were recognized by the league for their achievements in the classroom.

Gilhart Field

Charlie Gilhart Field is home to the Wilmington College men’s and women’s soccer teams. Gilhart Field is one of a few lighted socccer-only playing facilities in the Great Lakes region and ranks as one of the top NCAA Division III soccer venues in the nation. Facilities

In the spring, the tennis teams have six on-campus tennis courts; the track and field teams train and compete on the newly resurfaced, all-weather Beckett Track; the softball team plays at the campus’ top-notch softball field; and the baseball team competes at Tewksbury-Delaney Field. All athletic facilities, fields and arenas are contiguous parts of the campus. Also, the College features a natatorium/swimming pool, multiple practice fields, a new weight training room and a cardio fitness center. The College’s newly expanded athletic training room is a modern facility designed to facilitate practical experience for our athletic training majors, as well as keep our athletes in top shape. Also, Wilmington features a 24-stall equine center with a 72 x 152-foot indoor arena.

Hermann Court at Fred Raizk Arena The 3,500-seat arena serves as the home facility for the Wilmington men’s and women’s basketball teams along with the volleyball program. The Natatorim seats more than 500 fans and is the home of WC Swimming.

Williams Stadium Williams Stadium is the fall home of the Wilmington football team and the spring home for the men’s lacrosse team.

WC Softball Complex & Tewksbury-Delaney Field The WC softball field will have a new playing surface for the 2014 season, while TewksburyDelaney in the long time baseball field.

Athletic Training Athletic Training at Wilmington College SPECIALISTS IN THE PREVENTION, TREATMENT AND REHABILITATION OF SPORTS INJURIES Athletic training is an exciting and fast-paced allied medical profession. As an integral member of the athletic healthcare team, the certified athletic trainer (ATC) is educated in prevention, treatment, evaluation and rehabilitation of sports-related injuries and illnesses sustained by physically active people. Certified athletic trainers work closely with medical professionals in a wide range of settings that include high schools, colleges and universities, professional teams, sports medicine clinics, corporate fitness facilities and hospitals. In 2012, Wilmington’s athletic training program earned the maximum seven-year accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE). Students completing the Bachelor of Science degree program at WC are eligible for the National Athletic Trainers’ Association Board of Certification (NATABOC) examination to become a certified athletic trainer. Students also are eligible for the Ohio licensing exam upon earning their ATC credentials. All athletic training students are considered pre-professional during their first two semesters. After satisfactory completion of the pre-professional requirements, students are advanced to the professional phase of the curriculum, including advanced clinical education.

WC ATHLETIC TRAINING SCHOLARSHIP All students accepted into the athletic training program receive $5,000 in the scholarships over three years. Students receive $1,500 their sophomore and junior years, and $2,000 their senior year.

ATHLETIC TRAINING INTERNSHIPS WC interns get to experience first-hand the full scope of sports medicine. Some of WC’s most recent internship sites in the CincinBeacon Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine and many area clinics and high schools.

NATIONAL PROGRAM RECOGNITION Wilmington students have received an unprecedented six NATA scholarships. One graduate earned the highest score on the national certification exam. WC’s program also has been feature on the front cover of the NATA News and in The Chronicle of Higher Education.

The Wilmington College Athletic Training Quiz Bowl Team has claimed the state championship in six of the last 15 years. The 2011 team of Alex Geier, Cody Pontius, Erin Cane and their coach, Larry Howard, finished fourth nationally. It is the highest finish of any WC team on the national level.

Why We Play Division III Athletics It’s not about getting a scholarship, getting drafted, or making SportsCenter. It’s a deep need in us that comes from the heart. We need to practice, to play, to lift, to hustle, to sweat. We do it all for our teammates and for the student in our calculus class that we don’t even know. We don’t practice with a future major league first baseman; we practice with a future sports agent. We don’t lift weights with a future Olympic wrestler; we lift with a future doctor. We don’t run with a future Wimbledon champion; we run with a future CEO. It’s a bigger part of us than our friends and family can understand. Sometimes we play for 2,000 fans; sometimes 25. But we still play hard. You cheer for us because you know us. You know more than just our names. Like all of you, we are students first. We don’t sign autographs. But we do sign graduate school applications, MCAT exams, and student body petitions. When we miss a kick or strike out, we don’t let down an entire state. We only let down our teammates, coaches, and fans. But the hurt is still the same. We train hard, lift, throw, run, kick, tackle, shoot, dribble, and lift some more, and in the morning we go to class. And in that class we are nothing more than students. It’s about pride - in ourselves, in our school. It’s about our love and passion for the game. And when it’s over, when we walk off that court or field for the last time, our hearts crumble. Those tears are real. But deep down inside, we are very proud of ourselves. We will forever be what few can claim ... college athletes.
