Preview After failing to qualify for the Ohio Athletic Conference tournament for the first time in eight seasons, the Wilmington College women’s soccer team will look dramatically different. The changes don’t squelch any of the enthusiasm heading into the 2014 season. “I am excited about upcoming season,” said Wilmington head coach Steve Spirk. “We had a nice tour to Costa Rica with returning players, and it was great experience in terms of traveling and experiencing another culture. It also gave us an opportunity to play some games and do some training while we were over there to get ourselves ready for this upcoming season.” The Fightin’ Quakers must replace eight letterwinners, including five senior starters. “We lost experience and senior leadership in all three areas, starting with the defense, moving to the midfield and up top,” said Spirk. “They are going to be hard people to replace, but that is the challenge every year to come up with players to step in and step up. That is the exciting thing about coaching.” The tour to Costa Rica came at the right time for Wilmington as they were able work some key veterans into new roles. Senior goalkeeper Taylor Franklin (Delaware, OH/Rutherford B. Hayes) is one of those players that benefitted greatly with the extra practice and game repetitions. Franklin played in five games last season, with four starts, allowing less than a goal per game. She has played in 12 total games in her WC career, and has posted five career shutouts. “Taylor is playing as well as she has in her four years, and is ready to step up to be starting goalkeeper and lead from the back,” said Spirk.
4
Camille Gentile returns for her fourth season, and her third as a full-time starter.
Freshman Ana Hosler (Blanchester, OH/ Blanchester) could push Franklin for the starting position in between the pipes. Despite losing a pair of four-year starters in the back, Wilmington has some experience in helping whomever claims the goalkeeping position. Two-year starter Ashley Stockton (Waynesville, OH/Waynesville) and sophomore Morgan Combs (Tipp City, OH/Tippecanoe), who started all 19 games last season, bring a plethora of game minutes to the lineup. Senior Caroline Guindon

Preview (Barnesville, OH/St. Clairsville) was a key reserve over the last two seasons, and should be able to step into a starting role. Freshman Alyssa Reule (Miamisburg, OH/Miamisburg) missed all of last season with an injury and could find herself playing a pivotal role. Senior Sara Bishop (Fairfield, OH/Fairfield) along with true freshmen Stephanie Randolph (Monroe, OH/Monroe), Courtney Fernandez (Huber Heights, OH/Wayne), and Alexis Bailey (Middletown, OH/Middletown) could all push for playing time in the back third. While the back line has some experience to lean on, the Fightin’ Quakers must replace nearly 70 percent of its offensive production. Only five players, whom totaled 10 goals, return for Wilmington. Senior midfielder Camille Gentile (Brownsburg, IN/Brownsburg) is the leader with three goals. Gentile is the heart-and-soul for WC, playing every minute in the midfield. “Camille has been a 90-minute player for four years,” said Spirk. “Having her healthy, confident, and offensive-minded is very important – and that is where she is right now.” Seniors Lauren Hamrock (Beavercreek, OH/ Beavercreek) and Angela Phillips (Union, OH/ Northmont) are the only other players to have scored multiple goals last season. Sophomore Taylor Scott (Lynchburg, OH/Lynchburg-Clay) came to Wilmington with the identity as a scorer, and will look to make a bigger impact on the WC offensive. However, Spirk doesn’t believe the Fightin’ Quakers will have to turn to one specific player to get offense. “I have always felt you couldn’t rely on one aspect to score goals,” said Spirk. “You have to do it by
committee. You have to be aggressive and make things happen. We are going to need to get some rebound goals and some scrum-type goals in front of the box. You would hope you can get some individual efforts where you go down, beat someone and put the ball in the net.” Senior Sammi Miller (West Chester, OH/Lakota East) returns to the lineup after missing nearly two seasons with a couple of injuries. Sophomore Savanna Compton (Springfield, OH/Greenon), freshman Mellonee Hall (Beavercreek, OH/Beavercreek) and Bailey could all pose problems for opposing defenses near the box. As with many soccer teams, solid play in the midfield is the key to success, and Wilmington has a mix of experience and talented youth. Gentile is the lynchpin and will be flanked by the likes of Hamrock and junior Erika Good (Miamisburg, OH/Miamisburg). “We will have some experience in the midfield and some good upcoming young players,” said Spirk. “I think some of our young players will surprise people. I think they are athletic, have good experience and are confident. I think midfield will be the key. If you can control the midfield, you have a chance to win the game.” Junior Kala Fox (Ashland, OH/Hillsdale), along with freshmen Tracy Distl (Springfield, OH/ Northeastern), Becca Petra (Liberty Township, OH/Lakota East), Samantha Glish (Louisville, KY/Ballard) and Bailey will be competing for the minutes in the midfield. Wilmington opens the season 6 p.m. Friday against Rose-Hulman in the Franklin Invitational.

Head Coach
S
teve Spirk has established himself as one of the top coaches in collegiate soccer. Winning is the standard, not the exception, in Spirk’s life in soccer — both as a player and coach. As a prep star at Northmont High School in Dayton, he was a three-time All-Ohio selection. He continued his playing career at Wilmington College, where he was a four-time NAIA All-American. From 1977 to 1980, Spirk racked up numbers that have stood the test of time. His name is still atop virtually every WC statistical category, including career goals (74), career assists (43), career points (191), single-season points (57 and 54) and season goals (22 twice). No player had a bigger role in the genesis of Wilmington College soccer than Spirk. His Wilmington squads of the late ’70s compiled a 53-153 (.768) record as the WC men’s team grew to national prominence. In 1996, Spirk’s accomplishments were acknowledged by his induction into the NAIA Hall of Fame. By that time, Spirk also was making a name for himself in the coaching ranks. Spirk took over a Wilmington team in 1992 that had suffered through back-to-back losing seasons. In 1993, Wilmington finished 17-3-0 and the 1994 team went 19-3-0 and made the school’s first-ever appearance in the NCAA National Tournament. And the winning has continued. In more that 20 seasons on the Wilmington sideline, Spirk has put together a 248-116-30 record, qualified for six NCAA tournaments and advanced to the Sweet 16 three times. Getting back to the NCAA remains atop the Quakers’ set of goals. “I love this game. I knew early I was going to remain involved with soccer,” Spirk said. “Being part of the game is important to me, and I have learned over time that every year is a fresh start. You don’t dwell on past years — you build on them.” A 1992 Wilmington College Athletics Hall of Fame inductee, Spirk has earned the respect of his coaching peers, both regionally and across the nation. He was the Association of Mideast Colleges Coach of the Year in 1993 and 1994, the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Coach of the Year in 1999 and the OAC Coach of the Year in 2001 and 2003. He was named the Mideast
Region Coach of the Year and finalist for National Coach of the Year in 1994 and 1996. Spirk’s teams are as good in the classroom as they are on the field. His teams have earned the Women’s Collegiate Team Academic Award from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America 16 of the past 18 years. The Lady Quakers are epitome of student-athletes. “When we recruit good athletes, we’re looking for the top students who also excel on the soccer field,” Spirk said. “It’s very rare that we get a player who doesn’t have the same kind of success academically as they do on the soccer pitch. It’s really something that we expect to achieve every year.” Spirk also is WC’s director of athletic development. He lives in Wilmington, and has three sons, Jacob, Ben and Sam.

Assistants Bob Dessecker Bob Dessecker has been an assistant coach of the women’s soccer team since 1998. His primary duties for the squad are to provide scouting reports on potential soccer recruits and scouting reports on future WC opponents. Dessecker was a high school coach for 13 years before coming to Wilmington. He was an assistant at Northmont High School from 1984 until 1989 from where he was promoted to varsity coach from 1990-93. During his tenure at Northmont, he was involved in four state championship teams. In his 13 years as high school coach, his teams never had a losing season. He also was the varsity coach at Springboro High School from 1995 to 1997. “Bob is our chief scout. He does a lot of our recruiting during the fall, spring and summer,” head coach Steve Spirk said. Dessecker resides in Beavercreek. He is employed by LexisNexis in Miamisburg and works in the data center.

About WC As a school founded by Quakers, Wilmington College embraces persons from all backgrounds, faiths and philosophies, and promotes in its program and activities such values as integrity, diversity, community, service, peace and social justice, and respect for all persons. The college also values international cultures and facilitates courses in global studies, as well as accommodating long-and short-term study-abroad and touring opportunities. While Wilmington offers such popular majors as education, business administration, biology, criminal justice, sports management, social work and pre-professional, some of its more unique academic areas are the highly acclaimed agriculture program and its athletic training/sports medicine program, which are considered among the best in the nation. Popular co-curricular activities for students are the numerous campus organizations at Wilmington that range from fraternities and sororities to faith-based groups, music and drama, publications, student government and service learning. Wilmington regularly hosts entertainment programs designed especially for college students, as well as those open to the greater community such as its highly acclaimed annual peace symposium and Issues & Artists Series, which has brought to campus unique entertainers, provocative and informative speakers, and entities representing diverse American and international cultures. Much has changed at Wilmington College since students gained national fame for building a dormitory in 1948. But a constant throughout the college’s 141-year history has been the transforming nature of the Wilmington College experience. Students leave Wilmington with the tools to succeed as they engage in careers or further their education in today’s rapidly changing world. They also bring with them a wealth of knowledge and experience gained from the liberal arts, the embodiment of well-rounded individuals able to think critically and appreciate the role the arts, sciences and humanities play in a fulfilling life. They also realize that service to others is often an important road to self-realization. Indeed, since 1870, Wilmington College has prepared students to make a living, make a life and make a difference.

Why We Play Division III Athletics It’s not about getting a scholarship, getting drafted, or making SportsCenter. It’s a deep need in us that comes from heart. We need to practice, to play, to lift, to hustle, to sweat. We do it all for our teammates and for the student in our calculus class that we don’t even know. We don’t practice with a future major league first baseman; we practice with a future sports agent. We don’t lift weights with a future Olympic wrestler; we lift with a future doctor. We don’t run with a future Wimbledon champion; we run with a future CEO. It’s a bigger part of us than our friends and family canunderstand. Sometimes we play for 2,000 fans; sometimes 25. But we still play hard. You cheer for us because you know us. You know more than just our names. Like all of you, we are students first. We don’t sign autographs. But we do sign graduate school applications, MCAT exams, and student body petitions. When we miss a kick or strike out, we don’t let down an entire state. We only let down our teammates, coaches, and fans. But the hurt is still the same. We train hard, lift, throw, run, kick, tackle, shoot, dribble, and lift some more, and in the morning we go to class. And in that class we are nothing more than students. It’s about pride - in ourselves, in our school. It’s about our love and passion for the game. And when it’s over, when we walk off that court or field for the last time, our hearts crumble. Those tears are real. But deep down inside, we are very proud of ourselves. We will forever be what few can claim ...
