Coaches Head Coach Stacey Hairston Stacey Hairston is in his second season as the head football coach at Wilmington College. The Fightin’ Quakers went 0-10 in his first season. It will be his third season overall as a head coach, and has an record of 6-14. The former professional football player with the Dallas Cowboys and Cleveland Browns spent both his collegiate playing career and a dozen years as an assistant coach at conference rival Ohio Northern University. Hairston spent the past season as the defensive coordinator at Bluefield College (VA) in the school’s first varsity season. The Columbus native also served for two seasons as an assistant coach for the Edmonton Eskimos of the Canadian Football League. “I have coached in the OAC and have seen Wilmington from afar,” Hairston said. “It’s a good, quality school in a good location. The location is ideal; near Cincinnati, Springfield, Dayton and Columbus. You have to hit those areas hard to have a chance.” Not only does Hairston bring extensive coaching experience to the table, he played professional football for seven years. After being signed as a free agent in 1989 by the Dallas Cowboys, Hairston spent a year in Dallas before playing three seasons north of the border as a three-year starting defensive back for the Saskatchewan Roughriders.
league’s top-ranked defense in 1994. Hairston coached ONU’s defensive backs and special teams for seven seasons After a short stint as the team’s interim head coach, he was promoted to co-defensive coordinator and co-special teams coordinator, where he stayed until 2008.
He returned to the NFL for three seasons with the Cleveland Browns, where he was an integral part of the

Coaches Greg Forest Offensive Coordinator Greg Forest is in his second season as the Wilmington College offensive coordinator after two seasons at Division III Buffalo State, where he was the team’s offensive coordinator in 2012. Under his tutelage, quarterback Brandon Arehart had his best season throwing the ball, and Jeremy Duncan earned AllAmerican honors. Forest, a 1992 graduate of Ohio Northern, worked under current Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly at Central Michigan and Cincinnati before joining the staff at Buffalo. He spent one season as the Bulls’ offensive coordinator.
Bryce Bozman
Defensive Line/Strength and Conditioning Bryce Bozman is in his second season as the defensive line and strength & conditioning coach at Wilmington. Bozman follows Hairston from Bluefield College, where he served as the part-time defensive line coach for the Rams. A veteran of the United States Army, he spent nearly two years in Iraq and Afghanistan. Following his tours, Bozman he has lent his strength and conditioning expertise at a variety of levels from high school to college to professional indoor football.
Marque Jones Receivers
He was instrumental as UC’s quarterbacks coach in one of Cincinnati’s BIG EAST title runs as, due to injuries, the Bearcats were forced to use five different quarterbacks in their unbeaten season. He also oversaw the growth and development of two-time BIG EAST quarterback and former Carolina Panther Tony Pike. The 6-6 Pike threw for 2,520 yards and 29 touchdowns as the Bearcats scored a school record 502 points en route to their second straight BIG EAST championship.
Marque Jones has been an integral part of Wilmington College football for more than three decades. Jones stresses all phases of the wide receiver position, and the results speak for themselves. Four Wilmington College receivers — most recently Jon Cain — have received AllAmerican honors under Jones’ tutelage.
Andy Fries
Offensive Line/Recruiting Coordinator
Andrew Fries is in his second season at Wilmington College as the offensive line coach and recruiting coordinator.
After one year away from the Ohio Athletic Conference, Fries returns to Ohio. A former player and graduate assistant at Otterbein, Fries spent the past year as the offensive line coach/running game coordinator at Lakeland College. The Muskies averaged 157.4 yards on the ground in 2012, and one of his linemen earned second team All-Northern Athletics Conference. As a player, Fries helped Otterbein to a 25-16 record, including the school’s first-ever playoff appearance in 2008. He earned first team All-OAC in both 2007 and 2008. He was voted OAC Lineman of the Year in 2008, as well as being named NCAA Division III second team All-Region and third team All-American.

A native of Miami, Fla., Jones was a two-year starter at Curley High School, graduating in 1969. During his collegiate career with the Quakers, Jones was a four-year letter winner (1973-76) at wide receiver. He caught 39 career passes for 620 yards, averaging 15.8 yards per reception. His most productive season was 1975, when he hauled in 21 receptions for 310 yards. Jones graduated from Wilmington in 1977 with a business administration degree and attended University of Cincinnati on a graduate honor scholarship. In 1979, he received a master’s in marketing from UC. Jones and his wife, Terri, reside in Wilmington.

Coaches Will Isaac Running Backs Will Isaac returns to the Quaker sideline for his 12th season as an assistant coach and ninth in his current role.
Phillip Kaiser Defensive Intern Phillip Kaiser will be in his second season as the defensive intern, helping coach linebackers. He comes to WC after serving as a football operations intern at the University of Kentucky.
Isaac is no stranger to the position he coaches. In 2002, he became just the fifth running back in Wilmington College history to eclipse the 1,000yard mark in a season when he gained 1,006 yards in 10 games. In 2001 he narrowly missed the 1,000-yard plateau,
rushing for 901.
During his undergraduate years at Bowling Green University, he was a team manager and assisted with recruiting.
Despite an injury-shortened career, Isaac ranks third in Wilmington College history in career rushing yards with 2,191, second in rushing attempts with 545 and fourth in rushing touchdowns with 17. Isaac, his daughter, Mya Jackson, and his wife, Kim, reside in Wilmington.
Will Bowman Linebackers
Will Bowman returns for his third season as an assistant coach.
A 1991 graduate of Muskingum College, Bowman begins his 20th season in coaching. After 4 ½ years as a student assistant at Muskingum, he went on to assistant coaching positions at Hartwick College, Canisius College, University of Toledo, Thomas More College and Ohio Northern University. He also coached at Lakewood St. Edward, LaSalle and Oak Hills high schools. Bowman received his master’s degree from Canisius College. Bowman and his wife, Georgine, have a daughter, Abby. They reside in Fairfield.

Season Preview There are two words that has permeated the off-season: competition and depth. As the Wilmington College football team enters the 2014 season, the Fightin’ Quakers are poised to put a winless 2013 season in the rearview as they build OAC-level depth. As depth litters the roster, competition for spots will be team-wide and the team will have stronger special teams in turn. “The scheme, offensively and defensively, is there for us to be successful,” said Wilmington head coach Stacey Hairston. “We didn’t have enough depth to have competition at every single position, and that kind of hurts you – especially in the second half.” Unfortunately, a lot of the depth will be extremely young as Wilmington supplemented the 40-plus returners on the roster with more than 70 freshmen. “Having freshmen playing right away is not a bad thing,” said Hairston. “Obviously, if a freshman is starting or playing, that means we believe that we are a better team with them on the field. All freshmen have a learning curve that they must go through, but if they have the talent and are mentally ready, the learning curve can be sped up. As coaches, it is our job to put our young players in positions to be successful by recognizing their limited experiences and not asking them to do too much.” OFFENSE In their first season under the prospread attack, the Fightin’ Quakers displayed the ability – at times – to be very efficient and explosive. However, the inability to run the football led the struggles on third down and in the red zone. With more than half their starters lost from a season ago, the WC offense will look dramatically different this season. Wilmington will have a new quarterback for the first time in five years, but whomever claims the new signal caller

Junior Jeremy Duncan earned All-American Honors from Beyond Sports after leading the Ohio Athletic Conference in receiving yards. He also established a Wilmington College and OAC single game record with 327 yards receiving against Muskingum.
role will have an All-American security blanket. Junior Jeremy Duncan (Cincinnati, OH/Archbishop Moeller), who earned OAC Receiver of the Year honors in 2013, returns after leading the league with 118.4 yards per game. He set a Wilmington College and OAC record with 327 yards receiving against Muskingum. “We have to put ourselves in a position to allow Jeremy to be successful,” said Hairston. “We learned from last season that he can’t do it by himself. The young man had almost 1,200 yards receiving and we still went 0-10. We have to force teams to play him honestly, and he has to have someone else to throw the ball to. We need a receiver in the slot and opposite him. Potential wise, we have some guys that we will be comfortable throwing the ball to. “ Finding a couple of complements opposite Duncan should benefit the tall, speedy threat. Senior tight end Matt Stooksbury (Centerburg, OH/High-

land) is the second leading returning pass catcher with 16 receptions for 198 yards. He will be looked upon to carry a larger load in 2014. Sophomore Tyler Tarnowski (Brecksville, OH/Brecksville-Broadview Heights) developed over the season and had a reception in all seven games he played. Tarnowski finished with 14 catches for 207 yards and a touchdown. Expectations are high for 6-6 sophomore Aroyal Wright (Cincinnati, OH/ Newport (KY)). Sophomores Maurice Neal (Columbus, OH/South) and Cody Parson (Hilliard, OH/Bradley) will have opportunities. Sophomore Justin Lee (Middletown, OH/Madison) returns to Wilmington after sitting out the 2013 season. Sophomore Austin Jarbo (Gratis, OH/ Preble Shawnee) is the lone player on the roster that has taken snaps in the Wilmington offense, playing in four games.

Season Preview curve is fast. As you know all freshmen coming in, there is a learning curve they have to go through.” Regardless of the many young options at the skill positions, the ability of the offense to live up to its full potential lay firmly in the trenches. Juniors Tyler Johnson (Lebanon, OH/Lebanon) and Matt Buell (Camden, OH/Preble Shawnee), both started eight games for Wilmington in 2013. They are the leading candidates to man the left side of the WC offensive line. Senior Scott Duncan (Liberty Twp., OH/Lakota East), and senior Tyler DeVore (Springfield, OH/Greenon) have both earned starts along the line over the past two years.
Junior Tarrell Starckey led the Ohio Athletic Conference in tackling after transferring from Bluefield College before the season.
“He is very confident,” said Hairston. “For someone who hasn’t played a lot, that can be a good thing or a negative thing. He is not timid, not scared, and he is a competitor. On the other hand, there are some things that he has to learn. He is the only one that has been in our system, so he has an advantage. Most times you can equate that to it’s his job to lose.” However, 6-4 freshman David Alexander (Columbus, OH/Westerville Central) and 6-6 freshman Brandon Mitchell (Verona, PA/Fox Chapel) bring the physical tools to challenge Jarbo. As much as Wilmington looked for options in the backfield last season, they start the season without a single option that has played a single snap in the WC offense. “Not being able to run the ball was probably our biggest Achilles Heel when is came to get trying to get first downs, trying to sustain drives, trying to finish drives; we were not very good Twitter @WCQuakers
l
on third down or in the redzone because we were not able to run the ball,” said Hairston. “When you are not able to run the ball, it makes it difficult. It’s very important that we can run the ball this year.” Sophomore transfer Chase Manica (Shelbyville, KY/Shelby County) played in five games for Mount St. Joseph last season, rushing for 95 yards on seven carries and one touchdown. Manica took the bulk of the running back reps during spring practice. Another transfer, junior Kyle Davis (Wilmington, OH/Wilmington), played in two games with Thomas More in 2013. Several freshmen – Tahj ShoJohnson (Princeton, WVa./Princeton), Tahir Prophett (Stockbridge, GA/ Mundy Hills) and Yariel Munoz (Palm Beach Gardens, FL/Seminole Ridge) – will all compete from the outset. “We bring in a couple dynamic young guys that brings us something we don’t have across the board, speed,” said Hairston. “We hope their learning

Newcomers Spencer Carroll (Roxboro, NC/North Person), Sterling Clark (Cincinnati, OH/Northwest), Ben Eriksen (Springfield, OH/Southeastern) and Christian Barnett (Marysville, OH/Marysville) could find a way in the rotation. DEFENSE Defensively, the Fightin’ Quakers surrendered more yards and points than any other team in the OAC in 2013. However, there will be a plethora of new faces on that side of the ball when Wilmington takes the field in its opener. Wilmington returns four starters, including the league’s leading tackler in junior Tarrell Starckey (Richmond, VA/Highland Springs). Starckey recorded at least nine tackles in nine of WC’s 10 games, which includes a school record 22 against Marietta. The junior is the center of the strongest unit – linebackers – on the team. “When I look at our linebacking corps, it brings a smile to my face,” said Hairston. “In the 3-4 defense, you better have some linebackers that can fly and get to the quarterback. Nick Williams has proved, when healthy, he is as hard-nosed as can be, and when he gets a chance he is going to hit you. Tarrell is a playmaker. He is very athl

Season Preview letic and a guy that the offense has to know where he is. He has proven that he is going to make plays and he wants to make play. No doubt that he is the leader of our defense.
about it. He is a player that will make a difference. He is a freshman that hasn’t taken a snap yet, but he makes us better than we were last year.” Junior Amari Bryant (West Chester, OH/Lakota West) moves back to his original position of cornerback after spending the 2013 season at linebacker and safety. Improving on his conditioning level is the top priority, according to Hairston, in orde for Bryant to reach his full potential.
Williams (Cleveland, OH/Fairview), a junior, has yet to play a full season, but has the potential to be Robin to Starckey’s Batman on defense. Senior Jared Burson (Springboro, OH/Springboro) started the first five games, and returns for his senior season. After stepping into a starting role in week seven, sophomore Trenton Waters (Bowling Green, OH/Bowling Green) tallied 31 tackles in four games.
Seniors Eric Watts (Zanesville, OH/ Zanesville) and Drew Dutoi (Bremen, IN/LaVille) combined to make eight starts last season, but each played in all 10 games for the Fightin’ Quakers.
A host of newcomers, as many as 12, will push for playing time. At the minimum they will provide the foundation for improved special teams.
“Watts showed glimpses that he could be very good,” said Hairston. “He got dinged up a little bit, and once he got dinged up – he played a little differently. I am expecting Watts to come in and provide the leadership we are going to need in the defensive backfield. Drew, technique-wise, is very savvy. His biggest issue is he lacks top end speed. My goal is to have cover guys so we can use Drew where he is best. Actually, he played excellent for someone that was limited foot speed-wise.”
While there are four players that have started games for Wilmington, the defensive line as zero. All three starters have graduated leaving the Fightin’ Quakers searching for options. “Anytime you lose three seniors, especially guys that took all the reps, it’s going to be an uphill battle,” said Hairston. “I feel pretty good about the young guys coming back. With the young guys learning from scratch; they don’t have a whole lot of bad habits, and I think it’s going to make us more productive going forward. I actually expect our defensive line to play better.” Junior Linden Ayoki (Cincinnati, OH/ LaSalle) has improved his conditioning and could be a handful for opposing offenses. The 300-pound nose guard has shown glimpses of dominances. Senior Jason Phillips (Etiwanda, CA/ Etiwanda) moves to defensive end in his final season after playing linebacker in his previous two. The hard-hitter defender could have a breakthrough season with his hand on the ground. Sophomores Brent Rountree (Ocala, FL/Vanguard) and Mike Kleem (Parma, OH/Padua Franciscan) saw very limited varsity action.

Sophomore kicker Grant Brown (top) returns after converting 13-of-15 on his PAT’s and junior Matt Buell could help anchor the WC offensive line.
A lot of Wilmington issues on defense came in the defensive backfield as the Fightin’ Quakers surrendered 253.8 yards per game through the air. Coming into 2014, it’s true freshman Kevin Carter (Louisville, KY/Pleasure Ridge Park) that’s providing the most excitement about leading the improvement on the backend. “We are bringing in some young guys to compete for jobs, and one of ones that stands out immediately is Kevin Carter,” said Hairston. “He is on another level when it comes to an athlete. Kevin Carter is an impact player, no doubt

Junior Cody Reigelsperger (Trenton, OH/Edgewood) and sophomore Canyon Wilder (Hilliard, OH/Central Crossing) could factor into the rotation at safety. SPECIAL TEAMS Sophomore Grant Brown (Stoutsville, OH/Stoutsville) returns to handle the kicking duties. Brown was 13-of-15 in extra points and 3-of-4 in field goals. Sophomore Cole Voltz (Mt. Sterling, OH/Madison Plains) also returns after handling the team’s kickoff duties. The strong-legged Voltz will also compete for the team’s punter position. Much like every position on the roster, competition would be heavy on special teams as well as freshman Anthony Ruegg (Waynesville, OH/Waynesville) will put his proverbial foot in the race.

2013 season 2013 Recap
While the 2013 season didn’t go as hoped or planned, the foundation for the success in the football program has been laid.
“I believe that the 2013 season was a year of change and adaptation,” said head coach Stacey Hairston. “We changed our offensive and defensive philosophies to a more aggressive style with multidimensional pieces and variations. We changed our overall approached to how we prepare for our opponents each week. We had to change some personnel where we could. Our players had to adapt to the new coaching style and expectations of our new coaching staff. With all of that said, we made tremendous strides and improvements as we were more competitive in games. We were able to move the ball consistently through the air and defensively, we were able to get more pressure on opposing quarterbacks. Lot of improvements, but we are still a long way away from being the team that expects to win each and every week. “Offensively we must be able to run the ball in the future and score points when we are in the red zone,” Hairston continued. “Defensively we must eliminate the big plays and force teams to attempt # Def. field goals rather than allow them to score touchdowns. As this team matures and we increase our depth at every position, we will become that team that expects to win. We will make the plays down the stretch that will allow us to win the close games. The experience our players received this year will only help us in the future.” Sophomore Jeremy Duncan had a career year in earning first team All-North Region by D3football.com. In addition, he was named the Ed Sherman Receiver of the Year in the OAC and first team All-OAC. Duncan was the only receiver in the league to amass more than 1,000 yards in the regular season. Sophomore Tarrell Starckey, who led the league in tackles, also earned first team honors from the league. Senior Aaron Day was named second team, while seniors Donnie Ary and Brandon Arehart were named honorable mention. Arehart (3.97), senior Kyle Akers (3.65), junior Scott Duncan (3.55) and junior Jeremy McCoy (3.55) were named Academic All-OAC.

Ohio Athletic Conference 2013 STANDINGS Mount Union John Carroll Heidelberg Baldwin Wallace Ohio Northern Otterbein Capital Muskingum Marietta Wilmington
The Ohio Athletic Conference, the third-oldest conference in college athletics, is predated only by the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (1888) and the Big Ten (1895). The Conference is older than the World Series and even the NCAA itself, and has survived two World Wars, the Great Depression, the Korean War and the Vietnam Conflict. From a modest beginning of six charter members in 1902, the OAC grew to as many as 24 members in the mid-1920’s. Through the years a total of 31 colleges and universities at one time or another have been members of the OAC. Currently, the Conference consists of 10 members: Baldwin-Wallace University, Capital University, Heidelberg University, John Carroll University, Marietta College, University of Mount Union, Muskingum University, Ohio Northern University, Otterbein University and Wilmington College. Wilmington became the 31st OAC member school in July 1, 2000. The enrollments of the 10 OAC institutions range from 1,200 to 4,500. All of the schools were founded in the 19th century, and have long and outstanding academic reputations. While maintaining these high academic standards, OAC athletic teams and athletes have consistently enjoyed a great deal of success on a regional and national level. The athletic competition is viewed not as an end in itself, but as an extension of the edcational programs.

Record Book WC All-Americans Gary Worthy and Brandon Tisdale are part of Wilmington College’s All-American tradition. Worthy, a three-time All-American running back for the Quakers, still owns every single-season and career rushing record 30 years after his storied WC career ended. A standout defensive tackle, Tisdale was the last Quaker to earn multiple All-American honors. He was honored in 2003 and 2004 for his exploits on the gridiron. Nearly a decade later, he still holds the career record for sacks and tackles for loss. Since 1972, 76 Quakers have earned All-American honors, the most recent being Jeremy Duncan in 2013. In the classroom, the Quakers have been equally accomplished with 25 WC football players receiving either Academic All-American or Academic All-District honors since 1982. Who will be the next Quaker to make national headlines? Stay tuned ‌ the next All-American or Academic All-American could be taking the field or heading to the classroom this season.

Athletic Training Athletic Training at Wilmington College SPECIALISTS IN THE PREVENTION, TREATMENT AND REHABILITATION OF SPORTS INJURIES Athletic training is an exciting and fast-paced allied medical profession. As an integral member of the athletic healthcare team, the certified athletic trainer (ATC) is educated in prevention, treatment, evaluation and rehabilitation of sports-related injuries and illnesses sustained by physically active people. Certified athletic trainers work closely with medical professionals in a wide range of settings that include high schools, colleges and universities, professional teams, sports medicine clinics, corporate fitness facilities and hospitals. In 2012, Wilmington’s athletic training program earned the maximum seven-year accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE). Students completing the Bachelor of Science degree program at WC are eligible for the National Athletic Trainers’ Association Board of Certification (NATABOC) examination to become a certified athletic trainer. Students also are eligible for the Ohio licensing exam upon earning their ATC credentials. All athletic training students are considered pre-professional during their first two semesters. After satisfactory completion of the pre-professional requirements, students are advanced to the professional phase of the curriculum, including advanced clinical education.

Wilmington As a school founded by Quakers, Wilmington College embraces persons from all backgrounds, faiths and philosophies, and promotes in its program and activities such values as integrity, diversity, community, service, peace and social justice, and respect for all persons. The college also values international cultures and facilitates courses in global studies, as well as accommodating long-and short-term study-abroad and touring opportunities. While Wilmington offers such popular majors as education, business administration, biology, criminal justice, sports management, social work and pre-professional, some of its more unique academic areas are the highly acclaimed agriculture program and its athletic training/sports medicine program, which are considered among the best in the nation. Popular co-curricular activities for students are the numerous campus organizations at Wilmington that range from fraternities and sororities to faith-based groups, music and drama, publications, student government and service learning. Wilmington regularly hosts entertainment programs designed especially for college students, as well as those open to the greater community such as its highly acclaimed annual peace symposium and Issues & Artists Series, which has brought to campus unique entertainers, provocative and informative speakers, and entities representing diverse American and international cultures. Much has changed at Wilmington College since students gained national fame for building a dormitory in 1948. But a constant throughout the college’s 141-year history has been the transforming nature of the Wilmington College experience. Students leave Wilmington with the tools to succeed as they engage in careers or further their education in today’s rapidly changing world. They also bring with them a wealth of knowledge and experience gained from the liberal arts, the embodiment of well-rounded individuals able to think critically and appreciate the role the arts, sciences and humanities play in a fulfilling life. They also realize that service to others is often an important road to self-realization. Indeed, since 1870, Wilmington College has prepared students to make a living, make a life and make a difference.

2014 Ohio Athletic Conference Schedule
Why We Play Division III Athletics It’s not about getting a scholarship, getting drafted, or making SportsCenter. It’s a deep need in us that comes from the heart. We need to practice, to play, to lift, to hustle, to sweat. We do it all for our teammates and for the student in our calculus class that we don’t even know. We don’t practice with a future major league first baseman; we practice with a future sports agent. We don’t lift weights with a future Olympic wrestler; we lift with a future doctor. We don’t run with a future Wimbledon champion; we run with a future CEO. It’s a bigger part of us than our friends and family can understand. Sometimes we play for 2,000 fans; sometimes 25. But we still play hard. You cheer for us because you know us. You know more than just our names. Like all of you, we are students first. We don’t sign autographs. But we do sign graduate school applications, MCAT exams, and student body petitions. When we miss a kick or strike out, we don’t let down an entire state. We only let down our teammates, coaches, and fans. But the hurt is still the same. We train hard, lift, throw, run, kick, tackle, shoot, dribble, and lift some more, and in the morning we go to class. And in that class we are nothing more than students. It’s about pride - in ourselves, in our school. It’s about our love and passion for the game. And when it’s over, when we walk off that court or field for the last time, our hearts crumble. Those tears are real. But deep down inside, we are very proud of ourselves. We will forever be what few can claim ... COLLEGE ATHLETES.
