Coaching Staff Head Coach Beth Floyd Beth Floyd is the all-time winningest fastpitch softball coach in the history of Wilmington College. Wilmington is coming off a school record 20 wins. She is also the school’s Senior Women Administrator and head volleyball coach. Floyd assists the administration of Wilmington’s 21 intercollegiate teams and oversees game management and NCAA compliance. Prior to her arrival on the WC campus, Floyd was the varsity softball coach and athletic director at (Leesburg) Fairfield High School. A 1993 graduate of University of Rio Grande, Floyd compiled a 17173 record at Fairfield High School. Her teams won four Southern Hills League titles, nine sectional championships, two district crowns and made two “Sweet 16” and one “Elite Eight” appearances. She was named SHL coach of the year three times.

Gina Schneider Gina Schneider is in her seventh season as the assistant softball coach at Wilmington College. Coach Schneider has been coaching softball for the past five years. In addition to coaching at Wilmington College, she has also coached a competitive 18U travel team in the summer. She played collegiate softball at Ohio Dominican University. While at ODU, Schneider was an AllAmerican third baseman for the Panthers. Schneider has received many awards throughout her career such as: Region IX Player of the Year, three- time first team all conference, as well as making the all freshman team. In her junior year, she led the nation in home runs. She currently holds 14 offensive records at Ohio Dominican University. At Wilmington College she is in charge of hitting for the Fightin’ Quakers.

Tom Purtell Tom Purtell is entering his 15th season as a Wilmington College assistant softball coach, and in the fall of 2002 served as the interim head softball coach. Purtell brings 45 years of coaching experience to the Wilmington College softball program. For the past 14 years, he has had worked with head softball

coach Beth Floyd. He has been associated with the Fairfield (Leesburg) High School softball program since its inception in 1978. The Lady Lions have won 16 Southern Hills League titles, 27 sectional championships, six district championships, a regional championship, and made a state final four appearance. Purtell has served as Fairfield’s associate head coach for the past 21 years. Purtell was founder, manager and coach of the Leesburg Lady Panthers travel softball program from 2000 to 2010. The Leesburg Lady Panthers program has sent 40 players on to play softball at the collegiate level.

Allan King, Jr. Allan King, Jr. is in his first season as the assistant softball coach at Wilmington. He assists with skill development at practice and development of the game plan. King is also the assistant women’s basketball coach at Wilmington.

For years the Wilmington College softball program has been building up to this year as they have eight seniors that are starved to leave its mark on the program by lifting the Fightin’ Quakers to their first Ohio Athletic Conference tournament appearance.

plays with her whole heart, and she is a very gifted young lady with her arm strength and quickness. Catlin has been dedicated and worked hard through these four years, and has really developed into one of the best players in the Ohio Athletic Conference.”

“One of our strengths is the versatility we have between players,” said Wilmington head coach Beth Floyd. “So it’s going to allow us to do some different things, both defensively and offensively. In the past, we kind got locked in and we didn’t have that flexibility so we just had to power through some times. This year I am excited about that versatility.”

Potentially providing protection in the lineup will be Hutchison and senior Kaylee Cox (Elgin, OH/Elgin), who returns after missing last season. Hutchison literally played herself in at-bats early in the season with a stretch in which she recorded hits in seven of eight games after only have two at-bats over the first six games. She finished with a .333 batting average with two homeruns and nine RBI. Cox hit .270 with three homeruns and 13 RBI as a sophomore in 2012.

A season after setting a school record for most wins in a season, its time to make a move up the OAC ladder. The seniors are yearning for more. “The senior class is truly a special class,” said Floyd. “It’s made up of eight very good ballplayers that are passionate about the game. They are passionate about the program and doing what it takes to win. Largely because of those eight individuals, we were able to form a team and turn that team into a program.” Three of those eight seniors – Catlin Shilling (Waverly, OH/Waverly), Olivia Hutchison (Mason, OH/Mason) and Stacy Lunsford (Wilmington, OH/Clinton-Massie – are returning after leading the Fightin’ Quakers at the plate. Despite not earning any Ohio Athletic Conference honors, Shilling returns for her final season as an NFCA Central Region honoree. Shilling led the team in doubles (10), homeruns (10), slugging percentage (.777) and on-base percentage (.479). Her 10 homeruns were tied for second in the Ohio Athletic Conference. The third baseman is also the school’s all-time leader in homeruns. “Catlin Shilling is a tremendous ballplayer,” said Floyd. “She leads our team both offensively and defensively. She

While the exact make-up of the lineup isn’t known, there are some decisions almost made about some personnel. Sophomore Megan Warren (Grove City, OH/Grove City) was the one of three players to start in all 36 games, and has the inside track to return to the outfield. Senior Stacy Lunsford (Wilmington, OH/Clinton-Massie) will return to the outfield spot she has patrolled the last three years. Lunsford has been a force at the top of the order for the Fightin’ Quakers. She was second on the team with 23 runs scored, and hit .325 on the season. Warren struggled offensively for most of the season, but rebounded to record a hit in nine of the last 12 games to hit .244 on the season with 16 runs scored and nine RBI. Who will be joining them in the outfield is pretty much a toss-up as a plethora of players will have a chance to claim the spot. In the fray will be senior Erika Lee (Blanchester, OH/Blanchester), senior Nikki Tolson (Monroe, OH/Lemon Monroe), sophomore Hillary Daria-White (Bethel, OH/Felicity-Franklin), freshman Olivia Bauer (Willard, OH/Willard) and freshman Kerrie Trautman (Hartfield, OH/Field). “Our outfield really impresses me on how much ground

the cover, and how well they work together,” said Floyd. “One of the things that makes this team so special is that we have tremendous pitching. However, our outfield protects them well by covering a lot of ground. One thing they do particularly well is taking away bloop hits from the slappers. We do an outstanding job of not letting the soft stuff drop. We don’t want any table setters on, and our outfield in conjunction with our pitching does that.” While 66 percent of the outfield appears to set, the infield is far from decided. Shilling is the only player that has fully solidified a position. Junior Allie Noggle (Ashville, OH/Teays Valley) started all 36 games at second base and appears on the way to securing the position. A slapper, Noggle hit just .250 with 16 runs scored and six RBI. Lee, who spent the majority of 2013 at first base, will face competition from freshman Ashley McCray (Vandalia, OH/Butler) and senior Lina Larrson (Skovde, Sweden / Kavelbrogymnasiet). Lee was outstanding at the plate early in the season, but struggled in Ohio Athletic Conference action. She finished the hitting .241 with two homeruns and 11 RBI. Sophomore Jessie Stewart (Fredericktown, OH/Highland), who appears to be the heir apparent at third base in 2015, will compete for some at-bats, possibly at shortstop. Sophomore Tabby Biegler (Columbus, OH/Briggs), who is in her first season playing softball, is joining the competition in the middle infield. “Our infield is a combination of experience and youth, and it making for a very exciting season and for the future,” said Floyd. “The older players have been tremendous in helping the younger players adapt to the college style of play.”

She enters her senior season as the school’s career record holder with 24 wins and 305 strikeouts. “Danielle is truly a special individual,” said Floyd. “She is an outstanding pitcher and an even better person. So when you combine her hard work and athletic ability, you are going to end up with an answer that equals success. She has meant so much to this team and she has taken pride in herself to get better; not only every year, but also every day. She means a tremendous amount to our team. Her teammates utterly trust her, and they know she will always have then in a position to win.” She will be joined in the circle this season by junior Jess Clutter (Englewood, OH/Northmont) and freshman Kerrie Trautman (Hartville, OH/Field). Clutter, whose availability could be limited, finished the season 6-9 with a 4.37 ERA. “Kerrie is going to have a tremendous career here at Wilmington College,” said Floyd. “She is very technically sound, and understands the art of pitching. Kerrie is going to be a good asset for us.” Helping the pitchers navigate the rigors of a tough nonconference schedule and a tougher OAC slate will be a trio of catchers led by Hutchison. Freshman Sydney Kelly (Cincinnati, OH/Sycamore) and Daria-White will also spend time behind the plate. “This year we have a mix of experience and youth behind the plate, and the catchers looked really good this fall,” said Floyd. “I am very pleased to see the relationship they are developing with the pitchers.”

2013 Recap

The softball team turned in the best fastpitch season in school history, recording a school-record 20 wins and posting the first winning season. They finished the season 20-16. “We had a good season, the team worked extremely hard and their hard work paid off,” said head coach Beth Floyd. “The team was committed to getting better everyday, their investment into our program is outstanding.” Junior Danielle Monnier became only the second WC player to earn first-team All-OAC honors after establishing single-season school records in three different categories. She won her first six starts and finished with 12 victories. Monnier added 122 strikeouts with an ERA of 1.45. She allowed two earned runs or less in 14 of her 18 starts and registered four one-hitters this season. Following a stellar junior campaign, Monnier already holds two Wilmington career records with 305 strikeouts and 24 victories. She was named the 2013 Female Student-Athlete of the Year by her peers during the recent WESPYs. For the second straight season, senior Brooke Byrne earned honorable mention honors from the OAC. Byrne has been a consistent force in the middle of the Lady Quakers’ lineup. She recorded at least one hit in 27 of the team’s 35 games, including a career-long stretch of 16 straight. The 15 doubles she recorded last season is a single-season record, while her 31 career two-base hits are a WC career high. Her 86 runs scored established a new career mark in the category, while her 10 career homeruns has her tied for second behind junior Catlin Shilling. Shilling earned third team All-Central Region after leading the team in doubles (10), homeruns (10), slugging percentage (.777) and on-base percentage (.479). Athletic Training

Athletic Training at Wilmington College SPECIALISTS IN THE PREVENTION, TREATMENT AND REHABILITATION OF SPORTS INJURIES Athletic training is an exciting and fast-paced allied medical profession. As an integral member of the athletic healthcare team, the certified athletic trainer (ATC) is educated in prevention, treatment, evaluation and rehabilitation of sports-related injuries and illnesses sustained by physically active people. Certified athletic trainers work closely with medical professionals in a wide range of settings that include high schools, colleges and universities, professional teams, sports medicine clinics, corporate fitness facilities and hospitals. In 2012, Wilmington’s athletic training program earned the maximum seven-year accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE). Students completing the Bachelor of Science degree program at WC are eligible for the National Athletic Trainers’ Association Board of Certification (NATABOC) examination to become a certified athletic trainer. Students also are eligible for the Ohio licensing exam upon earning their ATC credentials. All athletic training students are considered pre-professional during their first two semesters. After satisfactory completion of the pre-professional requirements, students are advanced to the professional phase of the curriculum, including advanced clinical education. WC ATHLETIC TRAINING SCHOLARSHIP All students accepted into the athletic training program receive $5,000 in the scholarships over three years. Students receive $1,500 their sophomore and junior years, and $2,000 their senior year. ATHLETIC TRAINING INTERNSHIPS WC interns get to experience first-hand the full scope of sports medicine. Some of WC’s most recent internship sites in the CincinBeacon Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine and many area clinics and high schools. NATIONAL PROGRAM RECOGNITION Wilmington students have received an unprecedented six NATA scholarships. One graduate earned the highest score on the national certification exam. WC’s program also has been feature on the front cover of the NATA News and in The Chronicle of Higher Education.

The Wilmington College Athletic Training Quiz Bowl Team has claimed the state championship in six of the last 15 years. The 2011 team of Alex Geier, Cody Pontius, Erin Cane and their coach, Larry Howard, finished fourth nationally. It is the highest finish of any WC team on the national level.

The Ohio Athletic Conference, the third-oldest conference in college athletics, is predated only by the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (1888) and the Big Ten (1895). The Conference is older than the World Series and even the NCAA itself, and has survived two World Wars, the Great Depression, the Korean War and the Vietnam Conflict. From a modest beginning of six charter members in 1902, the OAC grew to as many as 24 members in the mid-1920â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s. Through the years a total of 31 colleges and universities at one time or another have been members of the OAC. Currently, the Conference consists of 10 members: Baldwin-Wallace University, Capital University, Heidelberg University, John Carroll University, Marietta College, University of Mount Union, Muskingum University, Ohio Northern University, Otterbein University and Wilmington College. Wilmington became the 31st OAC member school in July 1, 2000. The enrollments of the 10 OAC institutions range from 1,200 to 4,500. All of the schools were founded in the 19th century, and have long and outstanding academic reputations. While maintaining these high academic standards, OAC athletic teams and athletes have consistently enjoyed a great deal of success on a regional and national level. The athletic competition is viewed not as an end in itself, but as an extension of the edcational programs.

Why We Play Division III Athletics It’s not about getting a scholarship, getting drafted, or making SportsCenter. It’s a deep need in us that comes from the heart. We need to practice, to play, to lift, to hustle, to sweat. We do it all for our teammates and for the student in our calculus class that we don’t even know. We don’t practice with a future major league first baseman; we practice with a future sports agent. We don’t lift weights with a future Olympic wrestler; we lift with a future doctor. We don’t run with a future Wimbledon champion; we run with a future CEO. It’s a bigger part of us than our friends and family can understand. Sometimes we play for 2,000 fans; sometimes 25. But we still play hard. You cheer for us because you know us. You know more than just our names. Like all of you, we are students first. We don’t sign autographs. But we do sign graduate school applications, MCAT exams, and student body petitions. When we miss a kick or strike out, we don’t let down an entire state. We only let down our teammates, coaches, and fans. But the hurt is still the same. We train hard, lift, throw, run, kick, tackle, shoot, dribble, and lift some more, and in the morning we go to class. And in that class we are nothing more than students. It’s about pride - in ourselves, in our school. It’s about our love and passion for the game. And when it’s over, when we walk off that court or field for the last time, our hearts crumble. Those tears are real. But deep down inside, we are very proud of ourselves. We will forever be what few can claim ... college athletes.
