Season Preview

T

he goal for the Wilmington College football team in 2015 is quite simple; win some games. Coming off back-to-back winless seasons, head coach Stacey Hairston is confident in the team he and his staff has assembled.

“Our goal now is to take the next step in building a competitive program,” said Hairston. “The next step for us is to not just be competitive. Our goal last year was to be competitive, and give us a chance to win. We gave us a chance to win some games down the stretch. We made some mistakes, and that didn’t happen. The next step is winning. At the end of the day it’s about winning now. Learning what it takes to actually win a game, finish the game off. We have proven we have the talent to be productive on both sides of the ball, but you have to finish the game. “We have a lot of experienced guys coming back,” Hairston continued. “We are in a different stage from last year, when we had to rely on a lot of freshmen. Now we are in a different situation. For the most part, we are not counting on a lot of freshmen to start right away. We will be asking them to provide us with depth. Most of our key players are already here.” In possibly the most important and closely-contested battle, four players are in the mix at quarterback. A season after starting five different players at the position, junior Austin Jarbo (Gratis, OH/ Preble Shawnee) and sophomore Brandon Mitchell (Pittsburgh, PA/ Fox Chapel) return as the only two quarterbacks that have taken varsity snaps in the system. After winning the job in camp, and

Junior Chase Manica returns for his second season at Wilmington. The running back was named AllOAC last year after gaining 861 yards on the ground.

playing the first five games, Jarbo enters fall camp with a slim edge in the race. The junior threw for 509 yards on 50-of-99 passing with six touchdowns and five interceptions. Despite missing half the season, Jarbo was also second on the team in rushing with 335 yards and three touchdowns.

We have a quarterback competition going on. I am not looking for the most spectacular player back there. I don’t need the most spectacular player. I need someone that is going to run our offense; be smart with the ball. There are enough weapons to help them, but we have to help our selves by being smart.”

Mitchell started two games before also being lost with an injury. He went 22-for-46 for 309 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions. Senior transfer Luke Creditt (Waynesville, OH/ Waynesville), who joined the team for spring practice, is right in the middle of the competition.

Sophomore Lane Stevenson (Brookville, OH/Brookville), who missed most of the season with an injury, will also join the battle. Whoever claims the job will have a plethora of talented weapons at his disposal, led by All-OAC running back Chase Manica (Shelbyville, KY/Shelby County). The junior led the team with 861 yards and five touchdowns. He rushed for more than 100 yards in four games, including a stretch of three straight. Manica gained a career-high 158 yards on just 13 first-half carries

“It’s very important for us to identify that person that is going to run our offense, control the football and be smart,” said Hairston. “Even though we don’t have a whole lot of experience, it will be a battle.

Season Preview “We have a lot of good skill players,” said Hairston. “They have a lot of potential to be good in this conference. It’s good to have a core group of guys that have the potential and the skill make-up to be very good. Now it’s time to bring that to the forefront.” Sophomores Kalvin Butts (St. John’s, MI/St. John’s) and P.J. Meyer (Cincinnati, OH/Elder) bring a physical nature to the position, and will have to assume a bigger role in the offense. Mitchell could be a wildcard at the position. “When it comes to Brandon Mitchell, because he is so athletic and such a dynamic player, and I think he can be a great quarterback,” said Hairston. “Sometimes you have so much God gifted talent – you don’t work on the little things. The little things are harder for you. You have to refine your technique versus just going out there and being an athlete. He is a heck of an athlete. Early in camp, I need to know if he is going to be in the mix to be lead the way at quarterback. If not, we are not wasting him on the sideline.”

Sophomores Sterling Clark and Konnor Kinser (78) will bookend the Wilmington offensive line for years to come. They both started nine games each for the Fightin’ Quakers in 2014.

against Baldwin Wallace. Senior Kyle Davis (Wilmington, OH/Wilmington) and sophomore Eric Flynn, Jr. (Cleveland, OH/ Catholic Catholic) will also get their share of carries in the backfield. Davis added 158 yards on 46 carries, while Flynn, Jr. battled injuries and only gained 45 yards on 20 attempts. “Our running back position is just as important, and maybe just a tad more important that our quarterback position, because of the talent we have there,” said Hairston. “Chase has proven he can carry the load back there, and has proven when given enough carries – he can be pretty dynamic. He knows he can be a top back in the conference. The fact we have a couple other backs behind Chase makes me happy because now it gives us the versatility we need to be multiple. When you Twitter @DubCQuakers

have three guys that are hungry, and wants to carry the load, it can only make us better.” While there is talent on the edges at receiver, it’s pretty much unproven as Wilmington returns just 451 receiving yards from a season ago. Senior Justin Lee (Middletown, OH/Madison) accounts for more than 84 percent of that total with a team-high 379 yards.

Sophomore tackles Sterling Clark (Cincinnati, OH/Northwest) and Konnor Kinser (Tipp City, OH/ Tippecanoe) each started nine games for Wilmington and will be the leaders of a unit light in numbers. Sophomores Lane Hacker (Cloverdale, IN/South Putnam) and Brandon Wogoman (Tipp City, OH/Tippecanoe) round out the offensive line returners for the Fightin’ Quakers.

The receiving corps will get a boost from sophomores Tyler Tarnowski (Broadview Hts., OH/Brecksville-Broadview Hts.) and Aroyal Wright (Cincinnati, OH/Newport (KY)). Both are returning after missing all of the 2014 season. Tarnowski, who is coming off an injury, hauled in 207 yards and one touchdown as a freshman. Wright brings a play-making dynamic with his 6-5 frame.

“Our offensive line is an area of l

little bit of concern because we don’t have the depth or numbers,” said Hairston. “But the numbers we do have are quality players, starting with Sterling Clark. I would take him over any other tackle in this conference and he is only going be a sophomore. He has the size and strength, and is going to do the nasty, tough jobs. He is going to be a true leader for the offensive line.” Defensively, Wilmington will move to a multiple 4-3 defense in 2015. The Fightin’ Quakers used the defense a lot last season, but it will be their primary base defense. With eight returning starters, including four seniors, the defense should be the strength of the team. “When I look at our defensive unit, it kind of coincides with our team itself,” said Hairston. “I recognize the shortcomings we have on defense. I know the whole picture. I look at what we doing on special teams and offensively. Most of our true leaders are on defense. Even though we have struggled, most of our hardest workers are on defense.” Senior Tarrell Starckey (Richmond, VA/Highland Springs) moves from linebacker to strong safety. Starckey, who was a first-team AllOAC linebacker in 2013, finished third on the team last season with 63 tackles in eight games. “Tarrell moving to strong safety is going to help him,” said Hairston. “I evaluated his play, although he was a very good linebacker for us, he is better in space. We didn’t have that dynamic player in the secondary. Now we can put him the position where we can have him in the box. I can still blitz him or we can set him back.”

Junior Brent Rountree (96), senior Cody Reigelsperger (6) and senior Tarrell Starckey (9) will be key members to Wilmington’s defense.

and compete for snaps.

Senior free safety Cody Reigelsperger (Trenton, OH/Edgewood) returns after starting all 10 games last season. He added 69 tackles and one interception. For the first time in his career, senior Amari Bryant (West Chester, OH/Lakota West) will start a season in the same position he ended the previous. Bryant has played cornerback, linebacker and safety during his WC career, and will start the season at cornerback. A physical defensive back, Bryant’s versatility allows him to move inside to the nickel back position when needed. “When I visualize our defense going forward, especially this season, our nickel package will be pretty spectacular,” said Hairston. Sophomores Franco Villella (Troy, OH/Miami East) and Kentrell Lodge (Cleveland, OH/Salem (GA)) move to cornerback in the spring,

With Wilmington planning to use its nickel defense a lot, linebackers Nick Williams (Cleveland, OH/ Fairview) and David Branham, Jr. (Cable, OH/West Liberty-Salem) will carry the bulk of the snaps in the middle of the WC defense. Williams, a senior, earned All-OAC honors last season after finishing fourth in the OAC with a team-high 95 tackles last season. Branham was inserted into the starting lineup in week five and pulled down a career-high 10 tackles. He finished with 57 stops. “No matter whether the ball is to him or away from him, Nick Williams is getting to the ball,” said Hairston. “David in the middle, going to his second year, is only going to get better. He brings natural linebacker instincts. Having those two guys out there, and either side of them you have Tarrell – who is a www.wilmingtonquakers.com

sive varsity action. “I am looking forward to Darren taking a huge step and solidifying our defensive tackle position,” said Hairston. Sophomore Isaiah Young (Louisville, KY/Pleasure Ridge Park) will also be in the mix. Junior Te’Qon Scott (Richmond, VA/Highland Springs) will be the wildcard along the defensive line. “Te’Qon Scott came to us year ago, and wasn’t eligible to play,” said Hairston. “What I have watched him do over the last 17 months is transform himself. In the weight room, a year ago, he didn’t work out the way he could have. I think he was learning about himself. But I give him credit, he bust his butt in the weight room. I was absolutely amazed with how strong he is. He worked so hard, he has put himself in position to where we are now depending on him.”

Senior Nick Williams led Wilmington with 96 tackles in 2014. It was the first time in his career, Williams played in all 10 games.

former linebacker – and Amari, who is also a former linebacker. We are going to be very physical and athletic.” Junior Trent Waters (Bowling Green, OH/Bowling Green) and sophomore Jonathan King (Bellefontaine, OH/Bellefontaine) will compete for Wilmington’s third linebacker. Wilmington’s defensive line struggled at times, but could make a resurgence of sorts thanks to some new additions. “We have identified some players from last year that actually were not defensive linemen, but got to play some defensive line,” said Hairston. “The closer they got to the line, the better they were.” Junior David Henry (Wilmington, OH/Wilmington) made the move late in the season, and will see huge strides after spending an entire offseason working on his technique. Twitter @DubCQuakers

l

He finished the season fourth on the team with 59 tackles and a team-high nine tackles for loss.

The kicking duties will be handled by junior Grant Brown (Stoutsville, OH/Amanda Clearcreek) and sophomore Anthony Ruegg (Waynesburg, OH/Malvern).

“You look at David Henry, who naturally is a very dominating player,” said Hairston. “He is very strong and physical, and having him close to the ball is going to be very exciting.”

They battled all year long with each getting their chances in games. Brown was 6-of-7 (86 percent) on extra points and 4-of-8 on field goals, while Ruegg was 11-of-12 (92 percent) on extra points and 1-of-3 on field goals.

Sophomore Terrence NarcisseMurphy (Castleberry, FL/Lyman) moves from linebacker to defensive end. Junior Brent Rountree (Ocala, FL/Vangurad) will be a part of the line rotation.

Brown also punted for Wilmington, averaging a team-high 35.1 yards per kick. Junior Cole Voltz (Mt. Sterling, OH/Madison Plains) returns after missing last season with an injury. He handled the kickoff duties and punting in 2013.

Sophomore defensive end Ryan Prince (Urbana, OH/Urbana) started all 10 games for the Fightin’ Quakers, finishing with 30 tackles. He has added almost 20 pounds to his frame and should be able to hold up better in the trenches.

Wilmington kicks off the 2015 season 1:30 p.m. September 5, hosting Bluffton in non-conference action on Townsend Field in Williams

Head Coach Head Coach Stacey Hairston Stacey Hairston is in his third season as the head football coach at Wilmington College. The Fightin’ Quakers are 0-20 in his two seasons. It will be his fourth season overall as a head coach, and he has an overall record of 6-24. The former professional football player with the Dallas Cowboys and Cleveland Browns spent both his collegiate playing career and a dozen years as an assistant coach at conference rival Ohio Northern University. Hairston spent the past season as the defensive coordinator at Bluefield College (VA) in the school’s first varsity season. The Columbus native also served for two seasons as an assistant coach for the Edmonton Eskimos of the Canadian Football League. “I have coached in the OAC and have seen Wilmington from afar,” Hairston said. “It’s a good, quality school in a good location. The location is ideal; near Cincinnati, Springfield, Dayton and Columbus. You have to hit those areas hard to have a chance.” Not only does Hairston bring extensive coaching experience to the table, he played professional football for seven years. After being signed as a free agent in 1989 by the Dallas Cowboys, Hairston spent a year in Dallas before playing three seasons north of the border as a three-year starting defensive back for the Saskatchewan Roughriders. He returned to the NFL for three seasons with the Cleveland

Browns, where he was an integral part of the league’s topranked defense in 1994. Hairston coached ONU’s defensive backs and special teams for seven seasons After a short stint as the team’s interim head coach, he was promoted to co-defensive coordinator and co-special teams coordinator, where he stayed until 2008.

Coaching Staff Greg Forest Offensive Coordinator Greg Forest is in his third season as the Wilmington College offensive coordinator after two seasons at Division III Buffalo State, where he was the team’s offensive coordinator in 2012. Under his tutelage, quarterback Brandon Arehart had his best season throwing the ball, and Jeremy Duncan earned All-American honors. Forest, a 1992 graduate of Ohio Northern, worked under current Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly at Central Michigan and Cincinnati before joining the staff at Buffalo. He spent one season as the Bulls’ offensive coordinator. He was instrumental as UC’s quarterbacks coach in one of Cincinnati’s BIG EAST title runs as, due to injuries, the Bearcats were forced to use five different quarterbacks in their unbeaten season. He also oversaw the growth and development of two-time BIG EAST quarterback and former Carolina Panther Tony Pike. The 6-6 Pike threw for 2,520 yards and 29 touchdowns as the Bearcats scored a school record 502 points en route to their second straight BIG EAST championship.

Chris Harris

Offensive Line/Recruiting Coordinator

Chris Harris is in his first season as the offensive line coach and recruiting coordinator for the Wilmington College football program. Harris brings more than 13 years of college coaching experience to Wilmington, and will serve as the team’s Offensive Line Coach and Recruiting Coordinator. He comes to Wilmington from Lawrence University, where served as the team’s interim head coach for the final nine games of the 2014 season, as well as the team’s recruiting coordinator and offensive line coach. Prior to Lawrence, Harris spent three seasons at Manchester College (IN) as the Offensive Line Coach and Director of Football Operations. He gained experience with play calling, serving as the junior varsity offensive coordinator. Other than a one-year stint at Muhlenberg to start his career, Harris has always served as a collegiate offensive line coach; Beloit (2008-10), Minot State University (2007-08), Iowa Wesleyan (2004-07) and Ellsworth Community College (2001-04).

10

Brad Watkins

Defensive Line/Strength and Conditioning Brad Watkins is in his first season at the defensive line coach at Wilmington. The former running backs coach at Ohio Northern will assume the role of Special Teams Coordinator and Defensive Line Coach. He was also the junior varsity head coach and offensive coordinator. Watkins is a 2007 graduate of Ohio Northern, where he was a four-year letterman for the Polar Bears from 2002-05, and was a student assistant in 2006. He earned his M.E. degree in exercise science from Old Dominion University in 2011. He was an assistant coach at ODU from 2010 to 2013, serving as the running backs coach.

Marque Jones Receivers Marque Jones has been an integral part of Wilmington College football for more than three decades. Jones stresses all phases of the wide receiver position, and the results speak for themselves. Four Wilmington College receivers — most recently Jon Cain — have received All-American honors under Jones’ tutelage. A native of Miami, Fla., Jones was a two-year starter at Curley High School, graduating in 1969. During his collegiate career with the Quakers, Jones was a four-year letter winner (1973-76) at wide receiver. He caught 39 career passes for 620 yards, averaging 15.8 yards per reception. His most productive season was 1975, when he hauled in 21 receptions for 310 yards. Jones graduated from Wilmington in 1977 with a business administration degree and attended University of Cincinnati on a graduate honor scholarship. In 1979, he received a master’s in marketing from UC. Jones and his wife, Terri, reside in Wilmington.

Coaching Staff Will Isaac Running Backs Will Isaac returns to the Quaker sideline for his 13th year as an assistant coach and ninth season as running backs coach. Isaac is no stranger to the position he coaches. In 2002, he became just the fifth running back in Wilmington College history to eclipse the 1,000-yard mark in a season when he gained 1,006 yards in 10 games. In 2001 he narrowly missed the 1,000-yard plateau, rushing for 901. Despite an injury-shortened career, Isaac ranks third in Wilmington College history in career rushing yards with 2,191, second in rushing attempts with 545 and fourth in rushing touchdowns with 17. Isaac, his daughter, Mya Jackson, and his wife, Kim, reside in Wilmington.

Will Bowman Linebackers Will Bowman returns for his third season as an assistant coach. A 1991 graduate of Muskingum College, Bowman begins his 20th season in coaching. 2014 Season 2014 Recap

While the record may not have reflected it, the youthful Wilmington College football team showed improvements across the board.

“This past season we were a very young team that gained valuable experience as we fought through our youthful mistakes and battled injuries all season,” said Wilmington head coach Stacey Hairston. “Our players competed hard and actually put ourselves in a position to win a few games, but our inexperience at many positions caused us to not finish plays or drives which resulted in us not being able to finish the game with a victory. We made tremendous strides this season along with our mental growth which will only make us a better team in the near future.” Injuries really struck the quarterback position as the Fightin’ Quakers lost three quarterbacks to season-ending injuries, and were forced to start four different players – three freshmen and one sophomore – at the position. different players took snaps at quarterback. Sophomore running back Chase Manica helped bear a lot of the offensive load, rushing for 861 yards and five touchdowns on the season. As a team, WC racked up 1,728 yards on the ground. With the inexperience at quarterback, preseason All-American Jeremy Duncan struggled with just 21 catches for 301 yards and two touchdowns. Junior Justin Lee led the team with 32 receptions for 379 yards and four touchdowns. Defensively, junior Nick Williams led the team with 95 tackles, while classmates Cody Reigelsperger and Tarrell Starckey finished with 69 and 63 tackles, respectively. Williams and Manica both earned honorable mention AllOAC honors, while sophomore Tommy Fox and senior Scott Duncan were named to the Academic OAC Honor Roll.

Record Book WC All-Americans Gary Worthy and Brandon Tisdale are part of Wilmington College’s All-American tradition. Worthy, a three-time All-American running back for the Quakers, still owns every single-season and career rushing record 30 years after his storied WC career ended. A standout defensive tackle, Tisdale was the last Quaker to earn multiple All-American honors. He was honored in 2003 and 2004 for his exploits on the gridiron. Nearly a decade later, he still holds the career record for sacks and tackles for loss. Since 1972, 76 Quakers have earned All-American honors, the most recent being Jeremy Duncan in 2013. In the classroom, the Quakers have been equally accomplished with 25 WC football players receiving either Academic All-American or Academic All-District honors since 1982. Who will be the next Quaker to make national headlines? Stay tuned ‌ the next All-American or Academic All-American could be taking the field or heading to the classroom this season.

Athletic Training

Athletic Training at Wilmington College SPECIALISTS IN THE PREVENTION, TREATMENT AND REHABILITATION OF SPORTS INJURIES Athletic training is an exciting and fast-paced allied medical profession. As an integral member of the athletic healthcare team, the certified athletic trainer (ATC) is educated in prevention, treatment, evaluation and rehabilitation of sports-related injuries and illnesses sustained by physically active people. Certified athletic trainers work closely with medical professionals in a wide range of settings that include high schools, colleges and universities, professional teams, sports medicine clinics, corporate fitness facilities and hospitals. In 2012, Wilmington’s athletic training program earned the maximum seven-year accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE). Students completing the Bachelor of Science degree program at WC are eligible for the National Athletic Trainers’ Association Board of Certification (NATABOC) examination to become a certified athletic trainer. Students also are eligible for the Ohio licensing exam upon earning their ATC credentials. All athletic training students are considered pre-professional during their first two semesters. After satisfactory completion of the pre-professional requirements, students are advanced to the professional phase of the curriculum, including advanced clinical education.

About Wilmington College As a school founded by Quakers, Wilmington College embraces persons from all backgrounds, faiths and philosophies, and promotes in its program and activities such values as integrity, diversity, community, service, peace and social justice, and respect for all persons. The college also values international cultures and facilitates courses in global studies, as well as accommodating long-and short-term study-abroad and touring opportunities. While Wilmington offers such popular majors as education, business administration, biology, criminal justice, sports management, social work and pre-professional, some of its more unique academic areas are the highly acclaimed agriculture program and its athletic training/sports medicine program, which are considered among the best in the nation. Popular co-curricular activities for students are the numerous campus organizations at Wilmington that range from fraternities and sororities to faith-based groups, music and drama, publications, student government and service learning. Wilmington regularly hosts entertainment programs designed especially for college students, as well as those open to the greater community such as its highly acclaimed annual peace symposium and Issues & Artists Series, which has brought to campus unique entertainers, provocative and informative speakers, and entities representing diverse American and international cultures. Much has changed at Wilmington College since students gained national fame for building a dormitory in 1948. But a constant throughout the college’s 141year history has been the transforming nature of the Wilmington College experience. Students leave Wilmington with the tools to succeed as they engage in careers or further their education in today’s rapidly changing world. They also bring with them a wealth of knowledge and experience gained from the liberal arts, the embodiment of well-rounded individuals able to think critically and appreciate the role the arts, sciences and humanities play in a fulfilling life. They also realize that service to others is often an important road to self-realization. Indeed, since 1870, Wilmington College has prepared students to make a living, make a life and make a difference.

2015 Ohio Athletic Conference Schedule

Why We Play Division III Athletics It’s not about getting a scholarship, getting drafted, or making SportsCenter. It’s a deep need in us that comes from the heart. We need to practice, to play, to lift, to hustle, to sweat. We do it all for our teammates and for the student in our calculus class that we don’t even know. We don’t practice with a future major league first baseman; we practice with a future sports agent. We don’t lift weights with a future Olympic wrestler; we lift with a future doctor. We don’t run with a future Wimbledon champion; we run with a future CEO. It’s a bigger part of us than our friends and family can understand. Sometimes we play for 2,000 fans; sometimes 25. But we still play hard. You cheer for us because you know us. You know more than just our names. Like all of you, we are students first. We don’t sign autographs. But we do sign graduate school applications, MCAT exams, and student body petitions. When we miss a kick or strike out, we don’t let down an entire state. We only let down our teammates, coaches, and fans. But the hurt is still the same. We train hard, lift, throw, run, kick, tackle, shoot, dribble, and lift some more, and in the morning we go to class. And in that class we are nothing more than students. It’s about pride - in ourselves, in our school. It’s about our love and passion for the game. And when it’s over, when we walk off that court or field for the last time, our hearts crumble. Those tears are real. But deep down inside, we are very proud of ourselves.

We will forever be what few can claim ... COLLEGE ATHLETES.
