Preview After missing the Ohio Athletic Conference tournament in back-to-back seasons for the first time in school history, the Wilmington College women’s soccer team is ready to return to its back to prominence. “The Wilmington College Women’s Soccer program is very excited about the upcoming season and the potential of our program,” said Wilmington head coach Steve Spirtk. “We have seven returning starters along with veteran players, and a very talented incoming class. Wilmington expects to get back to its “winning ways”.” Most of WC’s experience will be in the back third as starters Morgan Combs (Tipp City, OH/ Tippecanoe), Alyssa Reule (Miamisburg, OH/ Miamisburg) and Ashley Stockton (Waynesville, OH/Waynesville) all return. Sophomores Stephanie Randolph (Monroe, OH/Monroe) and Courtney Fernandez (Huber Heights, OH/Wayne) also played considerable minutes in the back for Wilmington last season. They will help anchor a defense that will be breaking in a new goalkeeper for the fourth straight season. Sophomore Ana Hosler (Blanchester, OH/Blanchester) played in six games last season with two starts. She allowed eight goals, posting a GAA of 1.90, and is the lone returner between the pipes. Junior Taylor Scott (Lynchburg, OH/Lynchburg Clay) returns for her third season after leading the team with eight goals and 19 points in 2013. She had two multi-goal games. Wilmington was 5-01 in games Scott tallied a goal. The Fightin’ Quakers were 2-11 in games in which she didn’t score.

Morgan Combs will be in her third season as a starter for the Fightin’ Quakers.
After missing most of last season with an injury, senior Erika Good (Miamisburg, OH/Miamisburg) will be an important component to the midfield. Good started in all three games she appeared in last season, while playing 15 games with five starts two seasons ago. Sophomore Melonee Hall (Beavercree, OH/Beavercreek) started all 19 games and returns to the midfield, while senior Kala Fox (Ashland, OH/ Hillsdale), who played in 10 games in a reserve role.

Coaches Head Coach Steve Spirk Steve Spirk has established himself as one of the top coaches in collegiate soccer, and will be entering his 25th season as the Wilmington head coach. Winning is the standard, not the exception, in Spirk’s life in soccer — both as a player and coach. As a prep star at Northmont High School in Dayton, he was a three-time All-Ohio selection. He continued his playing career at Wilmington College, where he was a four-time NAIA All-American. From 1977 to 1980, Spirk racked up numbers that have stood the test of time. His name is still atop virtually every WC statistical category, including career goals (74), career assists (43), career points (191), single-season points (57 and 54) and season goals (22 twice). No player had a bigger role in the genesis of Wilmington College soccer than Spirk. His Wilmington squads of the late ’70s compiled a 53-15-3 (.768) record as the WC men’s team grew to national prominence. In 1996, Spirk’s accomplishments were acknowledged by his induction into the NAIA Hall of Fame. By that time, Spirk also was making a name for himself in
the coaching ranks. Spirk took over a Wilmington team in 1992 that had suffered through back-to-back losing seasons. He qualified for the school’s first-ever appearance in the NCAA National Tournament in his second season. He is nearing 300 career wins, and has led Wilmington to the NCAA Tournament six times. The Fighin’ Quakers have reached the Sweet 16 three times in his tenure. A 1992 Wilmington College Athletics Hall of Fame inductee, Spirk has earned the respect of his coaching peers, both regionally and across the nation. He was the Association of Mideast Colleges Coach of the Year in 1993 and 1994, the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Coach of the Year in 1999 and the OAC Coach of the Year in 2001 and 2003. He was named the Mideast Region Coach of the Year and finalist for National Coach of the Year in 1994 and 1996. Spirk’s teams are as good in the classroom as they are on the field. His teams have earned the Women’s Collegiate Team Academic Award from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America 17 of the past 19 years. Spirk also is WC’s director of athletic development. He lives in Wilmington, and has three sons, Jacob, Ben and Sam.
Assistant Coach Bob Dessecker
Assistant Coach Jake Morrision
Bob Dessecker has been an assistant coach of the women’s soccer team since 1998. His primary duties for the squad are to provide scouting reports on potential soccer recruits and scouting reports on future WC opponents. Dessecker was a high school coach for 13 years before coming to Wilmington. He was an assistant at Northmont High School from 1984 until 1989 from where he was promoted to varsity coach from 199093. During his tenure at Northmont, he was involved in four state championship teams. In his 13 years as high school coach, his teams never had a losing season. He also was the varsity coach at Springboro High School from 1995 to 1997. Dessecker resides in Beavercreek. He is employed by LexisNexis in Miamisburg and works in the data center.
Jacob Morrison is in his first season as an assistant women’s soccer coach at Wilmington College. He comes to Wilmington after serving one season as the assistant varsity coach at Miami Trace High School. Morrison holds a NSCAA Level 6. A graduate of Ohio Christian University, he was a soccer team leader for three season with the Trail Blazers and a head coach of the OCU overnight soccer camp.

2014 Recap
It was almost a tale of three different seasons for the Wilmington College women’s soccer team. “The 2014 season was a series of ups and downs,” said Wilmington head coach Steve Spirk. “After starting the season 0-3, the Quakers went on a six game winning streak. OAC Conference play was tough and disappointing in terms of wins. The final week of the season showed our future potential as we won one and tied. The Quakers will be back strong in 2015.” Wilmington failed to score in any of its first three games, but turned the tables on its opposition during the six-game winning streak. The Fightin’ Quakers allowed just two goals, scoring 14 as they ran their record to 6-3. An eight-game losing streak immediately fol-
16
lowed the six-game streak, and the inability to find the back of the net, once again proved too much to overcome as they scored three times in eight games. A 2-0 win over Muskingum and 1-1 tie with Heidelberg in the last week of the season kept WC from a winless OAC season. Three players – sophomore Taylor Scott (eight), senior Camille Gentile (five) and senior Lauren Hamrock (four) – combined for 17 of Wilmington’s 21 goals. Gentile earned second-team All-OAC honors, and was a one of a school-high five women’s soccer players on the Academic OAC Honor Roll. She was joined on the honor roll by Scott, Hamrock, senior Angela Phillips and senior Caroline Guindon.

About WC As a school founded by Quakers, Wilmington College embraces persons from all backgrounds, faiths and philosophies, and promotes in its program and activities such values as integrity, diversity, community, service, peace and social justice, and respect for all persons. The college also values international cultures and facilitates courses in global studies, as well as accommodating long-and short-term study-abroad and touring opportunities. While Wilmington offers such popular majors as education, business administration, biology, criminal justice, sports management, social work and preprofessional, some of its more unique academic areas are the highly acclaimed agriculture program and its athletic training/sports medicine program, which are considered among the best in the nation. Popular co-curricular activities for students are the numerous campus organizations at Wilmington that range from fraternities and sororities to faith-based groups, music and drama, publications, student government and service learning. Wilmington regularly hosts entertainment programs designed especially for college students, as well as those open to the greater community such as its highly acclaimed annual peace symposium and Issues & Artists Series, which has brought to campus unique entertainers, provocative and informative speakers, and entities representing diverse American and international cultures. Much has changed at Wilmington College since students gained national fame for building a dormitory in 1948. But a constant throughout the college’s 141year history has been the transforming nature of the Wilmington College experience. Students leave Wilmington with the tools to succeed as they engage in careers or further their education in today’s rapidly changing world. They also bring with them a wealth of knowledge and experience gained from the liberal arts, the embodiment of wellrounded individuals able to think critically and appreciate the role the arts, sciences and humanities play in a fulfilling life. They also realize that service to others is often an important road to self-realization. Indeed, since 1870, Wilmington College has prepared students to make a living, make a life and make a difference. Follow us on Twitter: @DubCQuakers l #WeAREDubC l Like us on Facebook: DubCQuakers

Why We Play Division III Athletics It’s not about getting a scholarship, getting drafted, or making SportsCenter. It’s a deep need in us that comes from heart. We need to practice, to play, to lift, to hustle, to sweat. We do it all for our teammates and for the student in our calculus class that we don’t even know. We don’t practice with a future major league first baseman; we practice with a future sports agent. We don’t lift weights with a future Olympic wrestler; we lift with a future doctor. We don’t run with a future Wimbledon champion; we run with a future CEO. It’s a bigger part of us than our friends and family canunderstand. Sometimes we play for 2,000 fans; sometimes 25. But we still play hard. You cheer for us because you know us. You know more than just our names. Like all of you, we are students first. We don’t sign autographs. But we do sign graduate school applications, MCAT exams, and student body petitions. When we miss a kick or strike out, we don’t let down an entire state. We only let down our teammates, coaches, and fans. But the hurt is still the same. We train hard, lift, throw, run, kick, tackle, shoot, dribble, and lift some more, and in the morning we go to class. And in that class we are nothing more than students. It’s about pride - in ourselves, in our school. It’s about our love and passion for the game. And when it’s over, when we walk off that court or field for the last time, our hearts crumble. Those tears are real. But deep down inside, we are very proud of ourselves. We will forever be what few can claim ...
