BLA, BLA, BLA EDITOR’S LETTER TEXT: ANDREAS SIMON

My dearest friends,

Queridísimos amigos,

the fact that we live in Ibiza does not automatically make us multimillionaires, and we do not spend our time going to the beach the whole day - every day - to achieve the perfect tan. Nor do we party each night as if it would be the last one in our wonderful Ibizan dreamworld. And we do not go to the most beautiful restaurants each night sipping champagne and snacking canapés, followed by something you need a dictionary to find out what it is paying a fortune with a whitened smile on our freshly scrubbed face. And of course we do not drive around in a hummer or ferrari cabriolet flirting with all the beautiful tourists to later shag them in our 4x4m round waterbed under a transparent roof and hidden cameras to later have a diabolic wank on it. And not to forget the fact that we are not ready to let go even the very last bit of education to appear in any of those glamorous magazines full of trendy ads and useless content nobody reads anyway. No. We work fucking hard every day to maintain what we call a free life - even if it is not as free as it used to be, but this keeps being a paradise. We sacrifice a lot of things to make this island to what it is, in whatever sector we work, and this is our very own satisfaction, despite of a wonderful and every year longer off-season where we truly have fun (if we made enough money in summer of course, if not we call it the ‘valley of tears’ or ‘boulevard of broken dreams’) and can enjoy the island’s real beauty. We eat when we can, sleep when we must and party when we have to. You can easily detect us, we are the sweaty skinny white wild-looking ones that rush through the masses like we want to participate in the next ironman, having a smile on our face that seemd more to be painted than coming from our inner self. We do not drug ourselves 24 hours as the authorities want to make you believe, in fact we do not even have wild sex relations with all you out there. You could say we are a very rare species of masochistic optimists following the dream that made so many of us come to Ibiza to find our true spirit.

So please, whenever you plan to visit us in our homes in Ibiza, be a bit patient and consider that we can not be your perfect tour guide 24/7, giving you free tickets and drinks to enter all the clubs and bars, and if you ask us to go out with you and we say no please do not answer ‘is it possible that you are becoming old and boring?’ This does not make us feel better in any way. We will do whatever we can to make things happen - but in our very own way and rhythm, so try to support us wherever you can. And if we tell you that now is not the right moment for a visit - do not take it personally, if you insist in coming just take a hotel and leave us alone for a while, we will host you as soon as we have a free minute. And why the hell do you never come in the off-season??? This island is so beautiful from october to november, from march to may, even in winter you can have the time of your life - and flights are a lot cheaper... We do love you and friends are of the most important in life - see you hopefully very soon ;-)

This is issue number 33, and it is already the last issue for 2010. Why we only do 2 issues? Because the season gets shorter and shorter and we can not finance it out of the blue. Why do we have a Podenca on our cover? Because they are close to extermination and are one of the most sensible and beautiful race amongst theis species. If you feel responsible enough to have one why don’t you go to duoibiza.net, they need all the help they can get. Stay tuned and be welcome to another spirit of Ibiza. We wish to thank all our clients, sponsors and YOU to make this magazine happen! Phrank’s comment: The truth is, I’ve run out of ideas and a dog’s picture was the only thing, i have found in my photo library which was funny for a cover;-)

Calling all madhouse crew, here’s a life-raft for you, in case you’re flagging or sagging with the weight of the seasonal pressure to keep performing on hardly any sleep, your liver and kidneys overloaded trying to clean you up from all the various bits and pieces you’ve been ingesting or getting into your system some other way, no doubt with a little more regularity than some might consider sensible: a little something in the form of a short visualization exercise to send the relevant signals directly to your autonomic system, to give you a rush of vital force that’ll have you humming discreetly, yet effectively, till the season’s end. Now, you know your mind is all-powerful and when focused on a single intention, makes you unstoppable. It only needs a gentle nudge, applied with the right attitude, to trigger it into action and this is the nudge. Scan your body from the crown of your head to the soles of your feet and wherever you spot even the slightest excess tension, tell the muscles there to relax – just say, ‘relax, muscle!’ Stop holding your breath and slow your breathing right down, making it smooth as silk and silent as the night (in places where they have such strange things as silent nights, that is). Lower your eyelids all the way down (after reading this) and sink your mind back from the frontal lobes into the centre of your brain, as if leaning up against the rear interior wall of your skull and gazing into the deep, soothing void between and behind your eyes. Open your heart as if opening a pair of sliding doors in your chest and let your innate human goodness flow freely. Sink all your weight below the level of your navel in a nod to gravity and picture the following: You looking and feeling magnificent your eyes bright as the midday sun, your body relaxed as a running cougar, your mind as sharp as a hawk on the wing, your stamina as strong as a bull and your spirit as high as the sky will permit. Now project this image onto each day from now till the season’s end and a bit beyond. Next jump in through the back of the head of this version of you and feel how it feels from the inside. Then slowly draw this version, with you inside, back into your present form and carry on as you were... With practice this whole operation takes no more than a few seconds and must be repeated daily at least twice to take full effect. Within three days, you’ll have forgotten tiredness and be belting your way through each day and night like there’s no tomorrow.

FLAMINGOS IN LAS SALINAS

SAL DE IBIZA

ORIAL

TEXT: ANDREAS SIMON // PHOTO: PHRANK

EXPERIENCE THE SALT OF SALINAS – FROM HEAD TO TOE What do you get when you cross the natural sea salt of Ibiza, a highly acclaimed international skincare company and the passion and pride of three local hoteliers? Sal de Vida, an exciting new range of cosmetic products using sea salt farmed from the iconic salt flats of Ses Salines, to deliver the beauty benefits of Ibiza to the world. After a chance conversation about sea salt and its healing properties with Angela Atti, a guest who has since become enamored with the hotel, they decided to look into creating a range of skincare products using the precious sea salt in their own backyard. Through her they teamed up with global skincare experts Kalis to create this all-new, innovative skincare line, featuring six unique products, available to purchase at the hotel itself plus select retailers across the island. From a spa-like tub of deep blue bath salts, ideal to recreate that holiday feeling in your own bathtub, or a heavenly scented bath foam designed to soften skin while-you-wash to a light, hydrating body cream, ideal for after sun care or a daily moisture boost, each product has been expertly crafted for optimum results. An anti-oxidant rich, delicate shampoo takes care of après-beach tangles, the nutritious body scrub buffs and polishes while melting into the skin, leaving a satin-soft finish with no need to rinse off afterwards and the piece de resistance is a beauty-boosting face cream, ideal for all skin types, with ultra-hydrating and antiaging properties. As the only beauty brand on the island to use the famous salt as its key ingredient, you can rest assured your skin is in good hands. Whether you’re looking for a new day-to-day skincare regime, need to stock up on your beauty supplies while you’re on holiday or are looking to take home an authentic Ibiza souvenir, the luxurious-yet-affordable range brings Ibiza into your bathroom and gives skin that just-back-from-holidays glow, all year round.

VICTIMS OF THE FASHION TERRORISM TEXT: OLIVIER // PHOTO: OLIVER ZARSKI

From Rangoon to Rio, from Rotorua to Rostov, from Pretoria to Pago-Pago, from Vladivostock to Viena and from Eton to Harvard the enlightened youth continue to display their better side by gazing fondly at the world through the polished yobos of their nether regions. Belts and laces are out; hoodies and underwear from Harrods are in. Yeah! Suddenly...! There is an urge to display fashion labels on underwear (no, not the hesssian or horsehair) such as Kenneth Cloan, Shaga S&Um and Uncle Tom Cobbly an All, and so this display of living performance, Big Brother happening, is, at this very moment descending to the land of hair and shadows where sighs and grumbles can be heard. Marcel Duchamps stirs in his slumbers, evoked and conjured (by illustrious, contemporary artists and their ilk) to bear witness that ARSE IS ART. The image of an autographed crapper is still a powerful concept for all mankind and almost has the feeling of home. In the beginning was the Word. Later on there was another word... Pastiche. In the land of the blind a one-eyed backside is king; bestowing benevolence from arse to ankle, with its singular fundament and unflinching perspective of Cyclopeian proportions it gazes unwaveringly at its bootstraps as it leeds the sheep on; gazing serenely at the timeless dirt. The lower brain pan philosophy filters and permeates through all levels of society (pull your pants up before you touch my food, Cookie!!!). This last decade has been an anus horribilis. And then... man fell out of the tree, or was pushed out. On the ground he stood on his hind legs and developed a waist in order to wear a belt and to hang his trousers on (army surplus) and his Alpine multi-function fruit peeler also used for picking boy scouts out of horse hooves. Having just descended from the dizzy heights of the arboreal verdiness and his arms being longish still he wore his trousers hipster style.. and some... so he wouldn’t bend his fingers when reaching for his wallet and hence was born ANTI-FIT. All the great men of history from Alexander the Great to Zorba the Greek, from Jonak the Liar to Snow white and from Passe-Partout to Le Petomain all wore their britches badass style. Alexander is still out there beyond the River Styx, kickin’ RS and his Levi’s 332bc’s are in a sorry state. He founded an Empire and he did not do it wearing lederhosen.

He did it by wearing his jeans round his arse just like Attila (another pathological maniac) from Ulaan Bataar, in order to illustrate his multi faceted personality and rectocular splitvision. Through the canyon of your mind, we will wander thru’ your brain. Every time i hear your name (OHHH! Fryingpan!!), I’m in pain. As i run my fingers thru’ your perfumed hair, it makes me smile and laugh, and then I look but you are not there, just the sweet essence of giraffe. So as the mists of pre-history drift lazily down from the Rift Valley to the present times and further, men’s brains get bigger and their arses get smaller (most of them) from standing up too long. As a result of evolution a great change is ocurring in the history of man (well... from 1998 down to modern times) and that is that the law on belts should be relaxed to provide better access to the nethers for better scratchability in order to assist thought- and maybe digestion. “Doctor Doctor, i have constipation” “So go and see a shrink and take a load off your hind-” Free your mind and your ass will follow (or is is the other way round) As a result this suburban urge can give the girls an idea of how to acquire a real brainbox. The creme de la creme of society, all original in vastly differing aspects of similarity, in that it looks like they steamed through an Oxfam Charity shop and robbed of it all the clothes nobody else wanted, including the Wild Man of Bomeo’s jockstrap. Onward children of the new age! Present Arse!!! but please profer them delicately on the polished leather seats of London taxis and be careful not to smudge. Hark Ye!! Raise your unflinching eye heavenwards even if you don’t have to kiss the ground. Be different, but belong, just like squillions of other similarly different people across the globe. Join the immortals as this thing prepares to go down in history... and down... and down. Avanti Jihadistic Fashion glory. Impose your sub-cranial brainpan-storm on unsuspecting members of the ‘Pastiche Brigade’.

Hoy no estás!

No me dejes solo ahora, acompaña mi silencio. 28

In my opinion i think the undergroujnd sound in Ibiza got lost, the sound right now is more tech house and lots of DJs play trax from the good old days of house.

The underground has practically disappeared from the island. The big clubs have cancelled all parties that are celebrated outside. you can not dance open air so the best option you have are private parties where you can dance until the police shows up by surprise.

Underground left years ago. I don’t like this word anyway. Innovative, daring thinking can be lighter, brighter or darker and harder. ‘underground’, like ‘balearic’ can be a bit of a useless word.

THE PARADE OF LOVE... TEXT: HOFER66 // PHOTO: PHRANK

What was once an icon of contemporary electronic dance music and all that goes with it has changed into one of the worst nightmares of the whole scene. On Saturday 24th of July 2010 the latest edition of the Love Parade took place in Duisburg, Germany, on an old freight area. The organisation had a license for 250.000 people but counted with eventually 500.000 or more. It was a sunny day and people from all over the world attended the event, the fact that Duisburg is close to the dutch and belgian border favoured the fact that finally more than one million clubbers tried to form part of this mega-event. It became clear very soon that the authorities and the organisators of the LoveParade had to shut down the entries in order to not overcrowd the event. The main entries on one side of the Parade were closed, only one tunnel on the other side was kept open. This tunnel was close to a highway that was shut down partially to let people pass. As this tunnel became overcrowded the security decided to shut this one down as well, but tragically they shut it down on the wrong end, leaving hundreds or even thousands in the tunnel, forcing them to turn around. What was finally the trigger for the mass panic is still not clear, one say it was a group of clubbers that tried to enter the tunnel pushing people, other say it all started out of a simple chaos. Fact is that it’s enough when a small group starts to push to trigger a butterfly effect that leads to disaster. The result of this mass panic is 21 dead and more than 500 injured, not to mention the numberless that are under shock in behalf of the pictures they saw with their own eyes. 56

What is most shocking is the fact that one week before another mass event took place on a federal highway close to duisburg, the ‘Still-Leben’, where around 3 million people celebrated a creative event in peace. This highway has no fences, people can walk off in any place at any moment, and this is how an event of this scale should be organized, like the first Parades in Berlin, where you could always and everywhere leave the parade. And one more, very important thing: the fact that the Love Parade never had any major problems in its 21 years of history makes clear that the trigger for this tragedy is not based on drugs and alcohol, as some want to make us believe, it is the fact that you can not lock up such a huge number of people into an area with only a few access and exit points, and - most important especially not in a tunnel... And only thinking of what could have happened if the rest of the event had known what took place in that tunnel is beyond any imagination, the fact that the mobile network was overstrained and the tunnel was on a far end of the Parade limited the number of victims. If this mass panic would have spread... The whole area was not made for an event of this scale, and the authorities and the organisation of the Love Parade in Duisburg are now under immense pressure to explain how they could start the event under those fatal parameters.

Our thoughts and hearts are with the victims of this tragedy and our condolence goes to their families and friends.

HELLO LENNY, LOOOONG TIME NO SPEAK, FINALLY WE GOT YOU BACK IN DUB MAGAZINE. THIS TIME WE GOT SOME VERY INTERESTING NEWS TALKING ABOUT YOUR LATEST BABY, THE IBIZAMUSICTRAINING. WHAT IS IT ALL ABOUT? Ibiza music training is the branch of the Ibiza music cluster which will deal with music education. As I have myself been running several projects aiming at teaching electronic music production to the kids in Ibiza, it seemed natural to merge the two projects in order to have the best possible results. The school is based in the Sonica studios and offices in San Rafael, since both Sonica radio and myself place the strongest emphasis on music culture it just seemed natural that all three teams (Ibizarre/IMC/Sonica) ended up working together on this. 58

THIS GOES ALONG WITH THE IBIZAMUSICCLUSTER, EXPLAIN OUR READERS WHAT IT IS ABOUT AND WHAT ARE THE LATEST ADVANCES. The IMC is a government recognized but independent organizational body that in this to streamline and accelerate all aspects of the music industry that we enjoy naturally in Ibiza. What has been clear to so many of us for so long time have finally grown to reach a level of recognition that goes all the way back to the first hippies arriving on the island and all the way up the headquarters of the European Union. The first goal of the IMC was to establish itself and reach out and make contact with the numerous businesses on the island that all deal in one way or the other with music as their main source of income. And as a member of the IMC I am happy to say that everybody is now on board the boat. The next goal is to streamline and integrate as much horizontal inte-

gration of all these music industries, and in this department we have made some excellent progress over the last month. Looking at the way things are going now I believe that we are going to enjoy an explosion of musical variation and events on Ibiza over the next year; and I’m not talking about more parties but rather music education, music history, music tourism, music culture and all the relevant fine arts that one would expect to be found in an atmosphere of great music. IS THIS JUST A POLITICAL TOOL TO WIN VOTES OR IS IT A REAL UNDERSTANDING OF WHAT IS GOING ON IN IBIZA? it is definitely not a political tool, simply because the cluster has no political power whatsoever. The Ibiza music cluster is nothing but an organization of interest groups that hopes to direct

dialogue into effective development of music on Ibiza. The Ibiza Music Cluster have involved members from every industry in Ibiza, it contains representatives from the government, from the clubs, from the labels/artists/DJs and various other affiliated or music related industries. While several different interest groups in Ibiza have met at various times of history to discuss various issues at hand, I believe that this is the first time that everybody is listening. I believe it is in the interest of all of us to seize this opportunity and create an international recognition that goes beyond that which Ibiza already have.

THREE THINGS YOU WOULD IMMEDIATELY CHANGE IN IBIZA IF YOU COULD? 1. I would legalize all the music venues with full permissions for live music. Some of the most iconic experiences and attractions that our island had to offer are simply not legal today. I think it is a pity that those people who organise and arrange these attractions have to constantly look over their shoulder, or deal under the table, just to provide the minimum expectations of our visitors. 2. I would include a progress of tourist tax to finance the cleaning of beaches and nature on the island in general. I am disgusted by the field that some people leave behind on the beaches, or all the champagne bottles that I pull out of the water where ever there is fancy boats. I don’t know anything more infuriating than seeing a rental car drive down the road throwing garbage into the countryside. 3. Install a legally-binding “persona non grata” island-ban that could be imposed on violent troublemakers, repeat offenders and should be updated with the various hooligan indexes as well as the records of sexual offenders. I think it is a real shame when the police have done an excellent job of catching a criminal/thief that they had to go back and waste more resources on catching the same guy another 40 times in the same season. TALKING ABOUT YOU, WHAT OTHER PROJECTS DO YOU HAVE IN THE PIPELINE? All my efforts are going into the Ibiza music cluster. I believe that one must strike while the iron is hot, so now is the time and I’m putting the pedal to the metal on this one. I really feel I had to give it all I’ve got, then we see where it takes me. But one thing is for sure it would be difficult for me to see this opportunity pass and not giving it my 100%. Ibiza is the birthplace of creativity from me, especially for musical creativity, I want every other talent out there to appreciate the fantastic revelation that I myself experienced when I first set foot on this island as an 18 years old dreamer. DUB: WE SAID IN THE FIRST EDITION THAT THE UNDERGROUND SCENE HAS DISAPPEARED IN IBIZA - DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA WHERE IT IS? (THIS IS HALF FUN- HALF SERIOUS, HOPE U READ THE ARTICLE IN THE FIRST ONE. IF NOT HAVE A LOOK ON WWW.DUBIBIZA.COM, THERE IS THE LATEST PDF, PAGE 50:-) As far as the deep techno underground is concerned, I would say that its Berlin right now. But this is a kind of underground scene that I don’t believe we could ever have in Ibiza, a scene like that belongs in a city like Berlin, or Frankfurt or London. The only underground scene that was truly unique to Ibiza was the openhearted psychedelic trance parties that we used to have in the past, I believe it would take a small-scale miracle to bring them back in their full glory. I think one has to remember that Ibiza was always upscale, it was always a market, it was always VIP. The only underground scenes that were truly unique to Ibiza was the outdoor psychedelic trance parties and also the hard-shoulder early-morning techno sessions which the local Spanish DJs were championing at the time. So I guess the only remaining, let’s say “unofficial” scene, would be that of the huge plethora of private parties held every night throughout the island. I have been to private parties all over the world, so I can see from the heart that the ones we enjoy in Ibiza are amongst the very finest, and I 60

mean that on every level, simply because, here in Ibiza, we have private parties on every level! THANX A LOT FOR Q+A AND FOR BEING WHAT YOU ARE - THIS ISLAND WOULD NOT BE THE SAME WITHOUT YOU.

IBIZA MUSIC TRAINING HOLA, LENNY.

Forthcoming September 4th the british band Faithless will present their last album -The Dance- on a live show at disco Privilege Ibiza. Britains, standards of electronic music and authors of the himn Insomnia, have been unresting since in last May were published their sixth work.

PRACTICE AND FOCUS INTERVIEW WITH JEFF MILLS TEXT:HOFER66 // PHOTO: PHRANK

68

JEFF, IT IS MY UTMOST PLEASURE TO HAVE YOU IN DUB MAGAZINE. YOU FOR SURE DO NOT REMEMBER BUT I BOOKED YOU FOR A PARTY BACK IN 1993 IN GERMANY AND WHILE WATCHING YOU PLAY I WAS ABOUT TO ABANDON MY DJ CARREER AS I THOUGHT I SHOULD PAY TO PLAY BEING A ‘NORMAL’ MIXING DJ AND NOT THE WIZARD YOU ARE... SINCE YOUR FIRST RADIOSHOW BACK IN THE 80’S - ‘THE ELECTRIFYING MOJO’, A LOT HAS CHANGED TECHNICALLY BUT YOU STILL PLAY VINYL ON THREE DECKS. WHAT KEEPS YOU GOING ON PLAYING VINYL? 1993!. That seems like such a long time ago. So much has happened since then. What keeps me going? I suppose the idea that there was always something new to explore. If not a technique, at least a concept or idea. I started DJing at a time (1976-77) when the art form was new and people were developing themselves at a enormous pace. This thirst for innovation and progress never really faded. I still believe that there is a lot room for improvement in this genre. WHAT IS THE SECRET OF BEING JEFF MILLS? Mainly patience and focus. I’m cautious about trends. I try to be an optimist. I can be very calm and focused on the objective under very stressful moments. I can’t raise my voice or scream its impossible. I work constantly with the understanding that the more I produce, the more I spiritually expand. For me, enjoying the fact that the project or production is finished is the reward, not-so-much what happens afterwards and I’ve never had a problem with saying “No” to something I didn’t like. WHY DO YOU KEEP COMING BACK PLAYING AT WE LOVE? After 8 Years, a fantastic relationship has evolved with the Club. I’ve seen it go through many changes and We Love still manages to put together a rich and well thought out collection of DJs each year. In this business, it is exceptional to have such consistency. DID YOU GET TO KNOW OUR SMALL ISLAND? Not as much as I would like. By coincidence, I’m always scheduled to return back to the US right after those dates at We Love and rarely have time to get around the island to explore. This year, I might have more opportunities. LOTS OF PEOPLE SAY THE REVOLUTION HAS JUST BEGUN AS IT ALL FUSES NOW TO BECOME ONE AND A DJ CAN BECOME A SUPERSTAR HIMSELF, PLAYING HIS OWN PRODUCTIONS AND CREATING SOMETHING NEW EACH TIME HE STARTS HIS SET. HOW DO YOU SEE THE FUTURE OF DANCE MUSIC? IF WE IN THIS INDUSTRY, CAN’T SEE TO BEGIN TO MAKE AND PRESENT THE MUSIC IN WAYS TO LET PEOPLE KNOW THAT MUSIC CAN BE MORE MEANINGFUL (OTHER THAN DANCING AND PARTYING TO) THEN WE PUT AT RISK ALL THE THINGS WE’VE WORKED HARD FOR AND I CAN SEE VERY LITTLE FUTURE FOR IT. I COULD BE WRONG AND I HOPE I AM, BUT FROM WHAT I’VE SEEN, THERE IS TOO MUCH ATTENTION TO EVERYTHING AROUND MUSIC, BUT NOT MUCH EXPLANATION ABOUT MUSIC ITSELF. THE DETAILS OF INSPIRATION AND REFLECTIONS OF ONES LIFE DOESN’T REALLY SEEM TO HAVE RELEVANCE IN THIS GENRE OF MUSIC. AT THE MOMENT, HERE IS WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TECHNO MUSIC: Right now, it is highly accepted for DJs to allow a computer and software to mix the music for them. Rarely anyone complains > 4.2

because the music is being blended perfectly by the computer and DJ, with very little to do, acts as if they’re performing the tasks. Yes, there is a future in this type of programming, but I don’t see the person being needed. Right now, the average Techno Record label sells between 300 500 vinyl records worldwide. After production costs and at such small amounts, labels barely make enough money to continue and most won’t. Though Digital Distribution means, music is being unlawfully traded/swapped, copied and sold by services that do not have the rights because the Music industry doesn’t seem ready to set regulations to help curb such illegal activity. “Promotion” can’t be the main reason a label exist. Right now, clubs and venues where this music is regularly played has the same or similar setting as 15 -20 years ago. Even though the ability to enhance and improve the settings of clubs could be greatly improved because of the technology we already use, most insist on keeping a type of setting that creates distance between the audience and DJs and leaves very little room for new ideas. Dance Music doesn’t have to change, we do. The way we present ourselves and the purpose and reasons for what we do should be more honest, substantial and clear. In this direction, I would believe there might be a longer existence. WHAT ADVISE CAN YOU GIVE TO A YOUNG BLOOD WANTING TO BECOME A DJ? First, buy a set of drum sticks and learn how to be evenly balanced in each hand. Then, learn to mix with vinyl records first before using CDs and Computer Software. By doing this, they would understand how all the different methods relate to one another and how each way has its advantages. Learn to mix on as many different pieces of equipment as possible. By doing this, will teach them to versatile and easy to adapt to any situation. The most important thing would be to understand what the objective of what a DJ is, which is person that programs music in a way that would allow people to free themselves spiritually. There is no exact way to this. JEFF MILLS IN 20 YEARS? Hmm. The age of 67. The year 2030. Hopefully able to still produce music. To program music for people, (if that’s what its called then) may be a rare occurrence, but not out of the question. At some point in my life, I would love to teach all I’ve learned.

JEFF MILLS AT WE LOVE... SPACE

¡1993! Parece que hace una eternidad. Ha llovido mucho desde entonces. ¿Qué me hace aguantar?

TRY, EXPERIMENT, TEST INTERVIEW WITH GUI BORATTO TEXT:HOFER66 // PHOTO: PHRANK

74

THIS IS A PERSONAL DREAM COME TRUE, THANX FOR BEING IN DUB MAGAZINE :-) It’s my pleasure.

ESTO ES UN SUEÑO PERSONAL HECHO REALIDAD, GRACIAS POR ESTAR EN LA DUB :-) El placer es mío.

IT IS DIFFICULT FOR ME TO SAY WHAT I LIKE MORE, YOUR OWN PRODUCTIONS OR YOUR REMIXES, WHICH WORK DO YOU PREFER? They are totally different processes. Of course I have more freedom when composing my own music, as I don’t need to respect harmonies, melodies, etc. But at the same time I love to do remixes. Especially when I change the vibe/harmony of the original giving on it a totally different atmosphere.

MY PERSONAL FAVE IS THE REMIX FROM MASSIVE ATTACK’S PARADISE CIRCUS, HOW DID THIS REMIX COME TO LIFE? Well, when I’ve received the original, I was totally blown away by Hope’s vocals. Then I started to change and create some of the original pianos to create a different rhythm. At the end, I’ve decided to record my own typical Boratto’s tremolo guitar and an electric drive bass to give a darker and more serious mood to the song. I wasn’t concerned about the dance floor, but the whole vibe itself. Finally i was super happy with the result. YOU PLAY IBIZA FOR WARUNG AND PETE TONG’S WONDERLAND, HOW DO YOU SEE OUR WHITE ISLE THIS YEAR? Ibiza is an amazing Island. The people are very receptive and everyone is there to have fun. It’s great to play there. It’s great to be there and see other things, especially the beautiful nature that Ibiza can offer. WHAT CAN WE EXPECT? Ah, people know that I love to play songs from my first album Chromophobia, some remixes and also songs from my second album Take My Breath Away. YOUR ALL-TIME TOP FIVE TRAX? Astor Piazzolla - “Adios Nonino” Tears For Fears - “Everybody Wants To Rule The World” George Benson - “Beyond The Sea” (La Mer) Tom Jobim - “Aguas de Março” Depeche Mode - “Sweetest Perfection” GUI BORATTO IN 20 YEARS? Living in a house on the field, just composing and producing in the studio. LAST QUESTION - ONE MAJOR ADVISE FOR ALL NEWCOMER PRODUCERS? Try, experiment, test. THANX AGAIN FOR YOUR TIME :-) My pleasure, Gui.

Astor Piazzolla - “Adios Nonino” Tears For Fears - “Everybody Wants To Rule The World” George Benson - “Beyond The Sea” (La Mer) Tom Jobim - “Aguas de Março” Depeche Mode - “Sweetest Perfection” ¿GUI BORATTO EN 20 AÑOS? Probar, experimentar, examinar. Gracias de nuevo. De nada, Gui.

LONG PLAYERS SELECTED BY HOFER66

76

DAMIAN LAZARUS / SMOKE THE MOSTER OUT/CLUB MIXES

FAITHLESS / DANCE

V.A. / BODY LANGUAGE VOL.9

damian caused an avalanche of different comments on the original, showcasing his incredible variety. on the dance mixes he brings it all down to the floor, making clear that this is his favourite place to be. highly addictive, he plays with the beats in his very special way, addictive, repetitive, genious.

2010 album from british dance band features constant guest dido on “feeling good”, also featuring vocalists dougy mandagi (temper trap), itch (the king blues) and classical singer mia maestro. deluxe edition includes extra track “happy” and comes in hardback sleeve with pop-up people not daisy chain.

this time dj hell takes the chance to mix one of the most popular mix-cds in this dying field. as usual he does not limit himself to any genre, the fact that you find klaus schulze or david sylvian on it makes it a masterpiece, and when bowies ‘this is not america’ ends the longplayer you just want to press repeat.

RENAISSANCE’S MASTER SERIES / HERNAN CATTANEO

SOLOMUN / DANCE BABY

COCOON/ PARTY ANIMALS

he is one of the few progressive djs that keep up the pace, this time he even goes down to deeper fields, presenting an incredible variety of trax in special versions, rare remixes and hard-to-find-stuff. this double cd is well worth its money, go get it as a perfect example of contemporary dance music.

name is program, mladen brings it to the point. after his meteoric rise into the top range of german producers he proofs that this is still not the end of the ladder. perfect production meets innovation, all trax are highly floor compatible. this cd is from last year, but i never got a chance to review it :-)

marco carola signs responsible for the first silverling, nick curly for the other one. marco takes it to tech house, nick plays more sexy house. as always finest tunes representing the incredible sound that cocoon stands for. always on the edge, always ahead, both cds cover the whole range. go get it!

V.A. / WAX ON RECORDS VOL.3

TRENTEMØLLER / INTO THE GREAT WIDE YONDER

V.A./ 2 YEARS CECILLE RECORDS

george evelyn aka e.a.s.e. is the man behind wax on records, celebrating 5 years of existence with this release. finest electronic music from lounge to broken beats, drum n’ bass and more. gelka and negghead, marcel and hungryghost or the great deep house track from the planty herbs - wow.

to listen to the album in one go is almost impossible, the trax are so intense that my recommendation is to go track by track, if not you might end up in a psychiatry. not that they are depressive, not at all, the mix of feelings is so present that it would just be too much. a masterpiece :-)

labelhead nick curly and his gang celebrate 2 years of existence with this double cd, one mixed by himself, one by labelmate markus fix. one might find it boring as the trax are quite similar, i find it interesting because of that. finest house á la mannheim.

ROBERT HOOD / OMEGA

MARTINEZ / THE PARADIGM SHIFT

DISK JOKKE / EN FIN TID

a dinosaur in a fast moving scene, robert hood manages to still be on top of the avantgarde while staying true to his very own driving tech sound. one can say he has no concept so far but i think this is exactly the concept, and u can be sure that he is very niggling in choosing his sounds. a masterpiece.

martin swanstein aka martinez evolved from deep house to minimal techno, and his third longplayer is a perfect mix of both. he even braids chicago sounds and detroit styles into this longplayer, always staying true to his unpredictable way of production.

having a good time is the translation for the title, and this is what joachim dydrahl obviously had producing this lp. it is not just 8 tracks put together, it is a whole trip through electronic beats. never boring, with a good portiuon of humour, just as he himself sees life.

PATRICK PULSINGER / IMPASSIVE SKIES

ZERO CULT / WHERE RIVERS HAVE NO NAME

V.A. / FRENCH PLAISIR VOL2

patrick likes to produce trax featuring other artists, in fact 7 of the 8 trax feature somebody. all are so different and so similar, everybody will find something on this lp. finest electronic sounds, carefully elaborated, difficult to play for the faint-hearted as they are all but obvious.

here comes the new album from the israelian artist zero cult. the 4th studio album on chillcode music is an amazing, chilled and mellow journey through gorgeous atmospheric ambient landscapes. unique, warm, deep and colourful ambient and downbeat.

one more time french master mind dj drenan has collected 9 previously unreleased tracks for your musical pleasure. you will find deep, soulful funky vibes that rocks you back and forth while exploring the musical universe iono music is well known for. featuring trax from e.g. cyklones, protonica, badbug or meander + ridden.

SERGIO WALGOOD / CHILL IN TRIBE

V.A. / ARABITRONICS LOUNGE VOL.1

AUDIO SHAMAN / CITYZEN

8 tracks of the best portuguese chillout music composed and played by sergio walgood with a mixture of downtempo, dub and tribal beats. ‘chill in tribe’ can be described by dream trips between the earth and space, wrapped in organic rhythms inspired by tribal and oriental cultures with a touch of psychedelica.

moroccan folklore meets our electronic club culture. trax from the kasbah rockers, maghrekiba, amira saqati or azzdine get mashed up from the likes of bill laswell, pat jabbar or mr. oz. a freaky encounter of what seems not to fit, just ot show that it is time to mash it all up. highly interesting, this is a lp for lovers of moroccan music.

downtempo duo carey o’sullivan and paul george’s (aka audio shaman) new album ‘cityzen’ is richly layered with atmosphere and sounds from our world and beyond. from loungey beats to latin grooves and dubby flavours, audio shaman’s talents are highlighted by the immense array of instruments included.

V.A. / MADE OF DAWN

V.A. / DUBSTEP MEDITATIONS

V.A. / THE MANDALA MIRROR

‘made of dawn’ is the soundtrack for all those that are conscious of all living beings around them, plants, animals and human beings, even spirits. thanks to the magic that these incredible musicians did with music a whole new fresh journey to warm the feelings arises and takes consciousness to a new level. wow.

dubstep meditations contains 10 unmixed, dj friendly tracks by international headlining dubstep and grime producers with the theme of ‘medicinal bass’. get ready for an eclectic collection of the psychedelic, meditative, experimental and ethnic flavors of the best of the worldwide dubstep movement.

as you travel past sand dusted pyramids, there is an oasis for your sand dried body. while the oasis proves to be a mirage, you see a small glimmer of glass that catches your eye. this reflective object is a mandala mirror, a sacred reality bending entity that plunges your aural sensory nodes into the wave formation that brings one to an alternate parallel reality of neuron bliss. >

SHORT PLAYERS SELECTED BY HOFER66

LOPAZZ + BETOKKO F. IMAGINATION / NEW DIMENSION

HOFER66 FEAT. BAREFOOTDOCTOR / IGWA VOCAL REMAKE

berlin based lopazz is well known for his high quality productions, and this is no exception. The original is a perfect fusion of finest house and disco, my fave is the remix by himself and zabook, a track to drill your mind just by building up, leaving you trapped in the repetitive beats

originally released in 2009, the remake with the vocals from barefootdoctor convert it into a real trip. ‘this magic we are doing only works if you don’t care’ - if you see them live somewhere you know what that means. most trippy, driving and thrilling, nothing for the faint-hearted.

DAYPAK SOLO + PADBERG / CLOSE UP/EXERCISE ONE RMX

SEB ZITO / THE WALL

the original was a beautiful vocal track back in 2007 that got transformed into a trippy deep flyer by exercise one. a track perfect to build up a solid session wherever you play - i recommend a nice beach or to warm up a serious set. lovely melody meets killer vocal, heavy bassline and strong kick, flavoured by trippy strings. beautiful.

CESARE VS. DISORDER / GET ON WITH IT schizzo chord vocals meet driving bassline meet oldschool house melodies - out comes a highspeed track that is made for the later hours, perfect to prepare peak time. very versatile in terms of where to play, always fits if you find the right moment. i would recommend around 4.30h :-)

TRENTEMØLLER / EVEN IF U R WITH ANOTHER GIRL/RMXS

released on offspin records quite a while ago, this track always comes back into my set wherever i play - good vibrations and a perfect build-up, flavoured with cool vocal bits to heat up a long night and dive deep. massive kickdrum and cool bongos meet wonderful melody - out comes a classic.

ANDRE CROM + MARC RHAUDER / DUBWEISER one more offspin... deepest house for pros, phat bassline meets dry kick and nice strings, a melodic flyer drills in - a mastertool to dive into a night of deepest solid grooves with an open end - whenever you choose to stop you wish to go back to the start and press repeat.

RICARDO VILLALOBOS / HUMMUSWEG

straight out of a tarrantino movie, transformed by pantha du prince and kollektiv turmstrasse into a serial killer track. loaded with emotions, the original takes you deep down ot your inner core, and the dance versions are finest remix work by two pros. my fave is the kollektiv turmstrasse one!

ricardo on another hunt for your brain on its way to schizophrenia. after already 5 seconds he blows your cells with his ability to create unique soundscapes, and when it kicks you are gone - no guarantee to find the way back. after breaking it up several times with a drumtempest impossible to resist. and there is no recipe to get out very easy. highly addictive.

LUCIEN N’ LUCIANO / HOUSE TOOL’S HOUSE

TRENTEMØLLER / SHADES OF MARBLE

well, one can say what he wants, this man is a genious. the title track is a house killer á la luciano, but the real thang is ‘behind my soul’ - start your set with this and you have them all melting like an acid after 35 minutes in your brain - with no way to escape until the music stops. absolute killer.

another killer out of his album, this one is another tarantino tripper, elements from miss you and other masterpieces of anders make this track a hard one to play, just bercause it is so unique. hard to describe how it sounds, i guess there is something of everything in it - only that he knows how to unite it.

ROBERT BABICZ / COME CLOSER/RMXS

GUI BORATTO / NO TURNING BACK RMX

robert is known worldwide for his outstanding feeling to create this unique atmo everybody is tripping on, and the guys from kollektiv turmstrasse take it to a complete new level. deepest, most trippy elements thrill your neurones and take you on a tour you never want to quit - highly addictive.

the original is genius already, from the very first seconds on gui takes you on a trip to his very own soundscapes - leaving behind all you knew before with ‘no turning back’. for me the mole remix is the real weapon - more schizo, less agressive but just as dangerous - and when the vocals come in...

ASHCROFT+VEGAS / IN FROM THE COLD/STIMMING RMX

ALEX KENTUCKY / OVER AND OVER

another one from the diynamic crew, they have the license to thrill... pianos and strings melt with dreamy melodies and a deepest basslinekick-combi to a floormonster that is hard to play - just because you do not know what to play afterwards :-)

alex is at the beginning of his producer carreer and already managed to release a top seller. over and over is a really beautiful deep house flyer, taking you on its wings to the neverending urge to dance. perfect production, if this is the beginning then i want to see him in a couple of years, he is definitely somebody to have an eye on. respect. >

MISS JOOLS / DON’T KNOW YOU

maybe, maybe this is the style of disco in the year 2080 - if so i wish i would still dj then. most trippy melodies meet deepest set up, the original pace is 119 beats but you can easily pitch it to 124 where it becomes a warm-up killer par excellence.

RODRIGUEZ JUNIOR / LA CAVALCADE

LANGENBERG / MONDAY 16TH

acid is not over - never. and when it melts with a solid production like this one it becomes almost dangerous. vocal shreds meet blinks and blonks, a most heavy kick follows a deep rolling bassline, out comes a monster without being too massive - just right for a cool set.

A. SCHNEIDER + L. VAN DOWSKI / SHINKANSEN

very nice deep house, a bit schizo but when it comes to overdo it he goes back into 2nd gear, making sure you have a safe trip through this track. best played at the beginning of a loooong night out, knowing you have all the time in the world to rock the mob.

CHUS JODAR / VIELE MENSCHEN RMX

both are well-known for their ability to lift a crowd by drilling slowly but steadily into your neurones - so a coop was obvious, it wasnt the first and wont be the last :-) a trancey melody fellows a deep bassline and a housekick par excellence, the built-up is a perferct fusion of both styles, bringing it on but not too fast, and after the last break you virtually kiss them everywhere.

betoko puts hands on the original from chus, out comes finest house by definition. vocal cuts throne on a phat bassline, a house kick dances around harmonic strings and highhats, a melody that can not fail, out comes a crowdpleaser when it comes down to a real house night.

RAINER WEICHHOLD / REIS/ HEARTIK RMX helge schneider lent him his ‘reis’ performance for this track, and rainer knows exactly how to dose and not overdose. the original is too overloaded for my set, but the heartik rmx is just my collar size when it comes to adding an extra bit to a crowd ready to go wild.

the original was one of the most difficult trax to play for me, so schizophrenic and strange that it can break any flow you just built up carefully, but played at the right moment it is a real kller. this remix from groovy jamie jones is a bit more accessible, keeping the same vibe but with the grooooooooooooove. great.

TOMAS HEDBERG / TUBETRACKER

MAETRIK / KEMIK

TIEFSCHWARZ / TRUST/JAMIEJONES RMX

kicking and klicking, driving and slipping, vocals turning up and jumping out, extremely groovy and a perfect one for the later hours to see who is still ready to dance the night away. always good for surprises, tomas delivers once more highest quality.

tech house par excellence, driving, kicking, building up like you need it when u r into dancing. works best just before peak-time, leaving space for some more pace afterwards. the other 2 trax on the ep are just as fast, very sophisticated tools for skilled djs.

CULOE DE SONG / AMBUSH + RMXS

JOHANNES HEIL / COULD THIS BE

this artist was presented to me via jon sa trinxa - an outstanding producer in days of deep house overload. the soundcarpets kick you out of reality, world class production at its highest level - once you are fixed you will not stop. the remix is more reduced but just as good. respect.

acid meets house meets johannes heil - out comes another great release on cocoon rec. the interesting factor on this track is the contrast between the dreamy melody and the acid saw-like piece, leaves u with both, a smile and a smiley on your face... is more into the groove

LOOP HOTEL / ROOM 201

PABLO BOLIVAR / DYNAMO RMXS

another deep house killer, acid strings meet warm melodies, an almost boring build-up is the secret behind the hypnotic effect this track has on me - and everyone on the floor. best played in early hours, be it at your set or in the morning - as usual the dosis makes the poison.

pablo delivers a great dreamy housetrack with the original, flying through your neurones on autopilot, and the remixes from the likes of iron curtis and kiki take it to another level. iron curtis takes it more serious while kiki is more into the groove. altogether another great release :-)

PIG AND DAN / THE RIDE

JOSE SOUSA / BLEEP

cocoon digital delivers another kick from pig and dan, techno at its finest, nothing for the slow mos, you should already be dancing a couple of hours in order to enjoy this big tune to the max. made for a main floor at peak time, perfect tool to take the night to the next level.

full of beats and basses, hooks and drums, perfectly arranged in order to make those hips move. perfect for changing to third gear when u r into building up a set - just like good sex. you can not have it all at once, be patient and enjoy the ride.

MARMION / SCHÖNEBERG RMXS

NIMA GORJI / STRANGERS REMIXES + RMXS

who does not remember the original, one of the big anthems of its time back in the 90s. abe duque is one of the lucky ones, taking it a tick harder and at the same time more reduced without loosing its essence. donnacha costello takes it more easy and dj hell puts the cherry on the cake - most trippy.

TGFA / I FEEL LOVE + RMXS

the original is too cheesy for my taste, but the riccicomoto rmx is just my style. shuffling and buffing, the beat drives you mad and the vocal is rather a relief than too much cheese. perfect played to enter in third gear, especially the girls will love it. surely.

82

THE PLANTYHERBS / DISCO 2080

a very reduced build-up, nothing really happening, but this track drills into your hips and won’t let loose until you mix another track in. one of those where you think ‘can i play this?’ - but if you try it once you won’t let go again, perfect tool to herald your set wherever you play.

4.2

the strangers remixes - hmmmm, sounds already like a remix, but anyway. very cool track, purest house, a vocal that i don’t understand but absolutely like, phat beats, drums, hihats tingling around... and the rmxs from the remixes - excellent. my fave is the uner one, taking it almost the african way. another great release from nima :-)

CADIZ + DE ANGELIS / THUNDER

a burlesque vocal meets grooviest house, kicks drums snares and all that it takes to kick off on any housefloor. almost epic, changing from deep to massive and back - and forth - and up and down. difficult to play as you don’t know how to get in or, even more difficult - how to get out...
