After releasing the first edition with the VIP letter in it I was surprised about the different reactions on it - from ‘are you mad to write something so offensive?’ to ‘you should have said it a lot clearer!’ - the whole spectrum was covered. And that was all I wanted, animating you to talk about it, exchange opinions and come up with some constructive ideas.

Tras publicar mi primera edición con la carta VIP, me he llevado una gran sorpresa con las reacciones que recibi - desde “Estás loco para escribir algo tan ofensivo? hasta “Tenias que haberlo dicho aun mas claro! “ - El espectro entero estaba cubierto. Y eso fue todo lo que quería, animaros a hablar del tema, intercambiar opiniones y llegar a algunas ideas constructivas.

One very good idea was that, as we all need each other, the VIPs could finance the party, the average clubber could get his essential liquids for a reasonable price and all are happy - sounds to me like a master plan.

Una muy buena idea si que fue, ya que necesitamos uno al otro, los VIPs podrían financiar la fiesta, los fiesteros podrían conseguir sus líquidos esenciales a un precio razonable y todos seriamos felices – me parece un plan genial. Lo que parece bien para hacer que la gente vuelva a los clubes también podría funcionar a nivel global. Diciendo juntos, me refiero incluso a nuestros gobiernos. No puede ser que aun seguimos con el modelo de exprimir más dinero de los pobres de todos modos, subiendo los impuestos y quitando nuestro poder adquisitivo. Esto siempre conduce a una disminución del producto interno bruto, es decir, la gente no tiene dinero para gastar en bienes, ya que es el motor que impulsa nuestra sociedad capitalista. Todo el sistema carece de razón, el desempleo sigue aumentando mientras la automatización de la producción conduce a menos puestos de trabajo y esa es la receta para un desastre. Los bancos mantienen el comercio con nuestro dinero y nadie más que nosotros es responsable cuando las cosas van a mal y cuando va bien el dinero va a los bolsillos de sus directivos... Nuestros bancos obtienen cada vez más y más dinero, la cantidad pagada por Europa es una utopía y aun así se le ocurre a nuestro gobierno un plan para evitar la quiebra de un país entero en vez de invertir ese dinero en algo útil. ¿Estamos todos locos? Islandia tomó medidas drásticas después de la gran caída en el año 2008, despidiendo a todos los políticos corruptos y demandando los gerentes y responsables de los bancos. Hoy en día tienen un gobierno votado por el pueblo, han creado nuevos bancos donde la gente reciben altos intereses para el dinero que ganaron con mucho esfuerzo y en un período muy corto todo el país logró pagar las deudas. Lo habeis visto en las noticias? Pues, yo no...

What sounds good to get the people back into the clubs could work on a higher level too. With together I mean including our governments, it can not be that we still follow the model of squeezing more money out of the anyway poor, rise taxes and take away our purchasing power, this always leads to a decreasing gross domestic product, in other words people do not have money to spend it on goods as this is the driving engine of our capitalistic society. The whole system is lacking its reason, unemployment is still rising as automation of production leads to less jobs and this is a recipe for disaster. Banks keep trading with our money and nobody but us is held responsible when it goes wrong, and when it goes well the money goes into the pockets of their managers... Our banks get more and more money, the amount paid by Europe is utopian and still our government comes up with a plan to avoid the bankruptcy of a whole country instead of investing this money in something useful. Are we all nuts? Iceland took drastic measures after their big crash in 2008, dismissing all corrupt politicians and pursuing the responsible managers of their banks. Nowadays they have a government voted by the people, created new local banks where people get high interests for their hard-earned money and in a very short period the whole country managed to pay back the debts. Did you see that on the news? I didn’t... But let’s get back to our island: the lack of tourists is obvious, flights are way too expensive and there are not enough, prices for accommodation are way too high and going out is a privilege for a small group of people. There is nothing worse than a tourist coming to Ibiza staying in his ‘all-inclusive’ hotel in order to satisfy his needs in-house instead of going around the island spending his money on a nice dinner, fancy clothes and a cool night out in our clubs - there is no cent spent in any local business. Therefore nobody will spend a fortune to get to Ibiza...

Pero volvamos a nuestra isla: la falta de turistas es evidente, los vuelos son demasiado caros y no dan a basto. Los precios de alojamiento son demasiado altos y salir de fiesta es un privilegio para un pequeño grupo de personas. No hay nada peor que un turista que viene a Ibiza que se queda en su ‘todo incluido hotel’ con el fin de satisfacer sus necesidades dentro de los muros del mismo en vez de ir por ahí a ver la isla y gastar su dinero en una buena cena, ropa bonita y una fiesta guay por la noche en uno de nuestros clubes - no hay ni un duro gastado en los establecimientos. Por lo tanto nadie va a gastar una fortuna para llegar a Ibiza... 6.2

This was definitely one of the most exhausting issues ever, from the very last minute interview with Luciano over the typical august craze until the decision to leave out our Formentera Guide (go to dubibiza.com - there you will find it :)) to make it look better we went through heaven and hell in less than 72 hours. Already in 2001 I got to know something that made me write an article before having seen it - what I normally never do - they call it the 8th wonder of the world - and end of last year finally my dream came true, my wife and me visited Damanhur, the Temples of Humankind. The story of Damanhur is the living proof that anybody can achieve outstanding things by sheer belief and unbending will. Ibiza is situated on one of the energy lines that cover our planet, Tibet is built on four but only one place, located in the valley of Valchiusella, close to Turin in Italy, is situated on four lines that form a perfect cross coming from the four directions. This place was chosen by Oberto Airaudi and 14 followers in 1978 to become what later onwards would be named Damanhur, home to the Temples of Humankind. His vision was so precise that only a few people knew what exactly they were doing when he told them to start digging a hole in the ground. 10 years and more than 2 million buckets of stone later the first rooms of the Temples were finished and, according to the ‘Damanhurians’, nobody did remember on how they found the strength to do such extraordinary work. You must imagine, the first years it was all dug out by hand, using only hammers and picks. Later on they used some electric hammers but still the work is overwhelming. The Temples spread over more than 8500 cubic meters on five different levels, linked by hundreds of meters of corridors. They are situated where the Eurasian and the African continental plaques meet, bringing a mineral to the surface that is of the oldest to be found on this planet, black Mylonite, transporting the planet’s core energy up to the surface. As within the years more helpers arrived the people from the nearby village started wondering what was going on there, so local police visited the mystic place to see what was going on. In the first raid nothing was found but a group of strangers calling themselves ‘Damanhurians’. The Temples remained undiscovered by the authorities. But one day an anonymous letter was sent to the police station mentioning some hidden Temples and legal 6.2

action was taken: Carabinieri accompanied by the mayor investigated the place. On arrival they were shown the entrance to the Temples so they climbed down the stairs and could not believe their eyes. Returning in tears and overcome by the beauty as they eyewitnessed something unbelievable they said ‘these Temples must be protected’. As there was no specific law regulating the construction underground in this area the Temples were save and the community of Damanhur was accepted by the authorities.

AND HERE IS THE STORY OF OUR VISIT As we search for the road to Valchiusella we notice that we can not go wrong, it was like a magnet attracting us and we found the curvy road up to the valley instantly. We arrive to Damanhur Crea, the center of Damanhur consisting in a big building that formerly was a factory from Olivetti. Today it is converted in a meeting point for all Damanhurians, containing different artisan workshops, a medical center healing with magnetic resonance, an ecological restaurant, different exhibition halls and a big conference room, bringing this building and the whole village back to life after years of agony. We are supposed to meet Macaco, our guide and one of the eldest members of Damanhur. Her name is derived from an ape and she tells us that it is common for Damanhurians to choose an animal’s name instead of their real one. This name has to be accepted by the community and after approval one can use this alter ego. The animal reflects the person’s character and symbolizes the dedication the members have after leaving behind their former life. She brings us to the reception where we are taken to our room as we stay for the night to get up early the next day to visit the temples. After checking in we meet her again in the lobby and she tells us to sit down in front of a cupboard where a plant is situated on top and strange but harmonic sounds fill the room. Next to the plant we see two small devices and two standard speakers. ‘Are you ready to experience something incredible?’ she says while standing next to the plant. She starts to sing a melody that, after a while, resonates somehow different through the speakers. ‘It is the plant interpreting my melody’ she says... I would love to see your face right now reading this but I promise it is not as half as amazed as ours were. The melody she had sung was interpreted by the plant in a very similar but different way and was still going on as she told us to come closer. The devices were connected to the plant by two cables, one came out of the back of one and was connected to a leaf, the other cable out of the back of the other device went into the soil. By taking the cable off the leaf the melody stopped immediately. ‘Before i experienced this i was a vegetarian’ she says, ‘but after that my point of view changed, plants do have a consciousness, just as animals do have, so where is the difference in eating an animal or a plant?’ I somehow felt happy to hear that as I always talk to my plants at home and give them names - and I do eat meat. ‘The best nutrition is a good mix of all, for sure it has to be 100% organic and additive-free but we need to eat a bit of all in order to get everything our body needs to function perfectly’ she adds But how the hack does it work? 10

Based upon the e-meter, a device originally developed by Volney Mathison back in the 1940’s, it works by using a wheatstone bridge, which is an incredibly sensitive circuit that can detect the slightest change – in this case, electrical resistance, converting this resistance in sound, making it hearable for our ears. It measures the minute resistance of electrical currents within plants and trees. These currents are one-one millionth of an electrical volt. (All living organisms, whether mammals, amphibians, or plants, have electrical currents running through them. In humans, the brain communicates through the nervous system to control organs, limbs, sight, etc, using weak electrical charges.) Cables are connected to two receivers, one to the root of the plant and the second to a leaf. The meter is connected to a trigger, a voltage-controlled synthesizer or similar midi device. The change in the plant’s electrical resistance controls the pitch, volume and filtering. Research has found that the plants react depending upon their surroundings. Light, water, sound and even emotional energy within a room all cause significant alterations to the plant’s electrical current. Norman Lederman was the true pioneer of this device celebrating the world’s first live plant concert in quadrophonic sound at the Kreeger Music Building’s McDonald Recital Hall on April 17th in 1974. Macaco said that you can as well connect other devices such as a door locker to the plant. The plant would then only let people in the room that had a positive vibration, all others were left out with the door closed. ‘We also connected an automatic water supplier to the plant but had to take it off as the plant got hooked on water and did not stop watering itself.’ Junkies they are... Imagine, if plants do have a consciousness we could educate our children to appreciate plant-life in a complete new way having a positive impact on encouraging conservation in our generations

world’s biggest cupola of handmade glasswork. The whole Hall reflects colours and images in an endless sequence encouraging the mind to open towards infinity. A gong is placed in one corner and is played while you stand in the middle of the Hall, reaching so intense vibrations that you almost vanish in the omnipresent sound filling the whole Hall. The pathways connecting the Halls are full of hidden doors and invisible stairs, just as the Egyptian Pyramids. All the time I wonder on how on Earth this all could have possibly be constructed and crafted by Human Force - as I said in the beginning, we are able to do so much more than we possibly believe... After leaving the Temples it feels like returning to planet Earth from somewhere outer Space or a parallel world, your body is vibrating and you are charged with divine energy. It is hard to describe but it certainly feels like you witnessed the most beautiful and extraordinary experience of your life. Macaco is awaiting us with an aware smile, knowing that we now opened a door to another world and will never be the same as we were before seeing this. instead of deforestation and destruction of what is left over from our former ‘oh so’ green planet. After this first massive impact our senses were edged to the max of what is there to come. We decide to have dinner and go to bed early as we wanted to desperately visit the Temples the next morning. Waking up in this most green environment is amazing as you can already smell the pureness of the air and feel the vibrations of what is very close to us. We meet again with Macaco and she leads us to the first of the Temples, a place over ground that is dedicated to ceremonies and encounters, fringed by stone columns and a massive quartz cristal enthroned on an altar. Next to it is a garden with huge granite Monoliths to connect with the Earth and stone spirals to walk along and purify yourself. After that we drive up a mountain with a group of people, all here to explore the Temples. Only seven people at once are allowed to enter the Temples, accompanied by an Italian guide and a translator. An elevator takes us down, difficult to say how far, and we walk out into the Blue Temple, followed by the Hall of Water, the Hall of the Earth, Hall of Metals, Hall of Spheres, the Labyrinth and the last one, the Hall of Mirrors. To describe them all in detail would take far more than the space of this whole magazine but I can promise you, you have never ever seen anything like it in your entire life. Each Hall has its own meaning, in the Hall of the Earth our history is documented in finest marquetry from the very beginning to the nearby future with a sky full of leds that form an ancient starry sky being reflected in the floor out of polished black marble making you feel you float in Space. The Hall of Metals is showcasing the different metals on our planet with fire being the protagonist of the Hall, the Hall of Water is dedicated to the feminine principle, carved in the shape of a chalice. The Hall of Mirrors is dedicated to light, air, sky, sun and life, being a celebration of the re-awakening of the complete Human being, the re-unification of Humanity as a spiritual and divine principle. It is crowned by the

As we drive back to Damanhur Crea we have some food and visit the exhibition of paintings by the founder, Oberto Airaudi. He painted thousands (!) in his life and is still going, each one a unique piece of art. Painted in multiple colours and exposed to changing lights it is another great experience and I begin to seriously doubt if all this is Human work or if there is a divine force accelerating everything. On our way out of Damanhur Macaco shows us a house they built in a village nearby, a completely self-sustainable house made entirely out of non-polluting materials, and a farm where all food is organic and the animals are of ethical husbandry. As we find a fox trapped in one of the fences and liberate it without getting bitten we know that this is definitely a special day and nothing happens out of coincidence. Before we finally leave for good we visit a room in the farm converted in a very fine restaurant where Sting was the latest guest, overwhelmed by the Beauty of the Temples and the quality of life the Damanhurians created out of nothing he decided to support this project wherever he can, helping in developing a device to spread the Singing Plant to all of us. Damanhur is the perfect example of how we can live in absolute harmony with Mother Nature, benefiting mutually from our great abilities whilst preserving the resources by using sustainable energies and organic and ethical ways of nutrition respecting the circle of life. En el año 2001 descubrí algo que me hizo escribir un artículo antes de haberlo visto – cosa que normalmente no haría - la llaman la octava maravilla del mundo. Al final del año pasado mi sueño, de visitar los Templos de la Humanidad en Damanhur con mi esposa, se hizo realidad. La historia de Damanhur es la prueba viviente de que cualquiera puede lograr cosas excepcionales gracias a la pura fe y la fuerza de voluntad. Ibiza está situada sobre una de las líneas energéticas de nuestro planeta. El Tíbet está basado sobre cuatro líneas energéticas. Existe solo un lugar, ubicado en el valle de Valchiusella, cerca de Turín en Italia, que está situado sobre cuatro líneas energéticas que forman una cruz perfecta viniendo de las cuatro direcciones. En 1978, este lugar fue elegido por Oberto Airaudi y sus 14 seguidores como el hogar de los Templos de la Humanidad y más adelante fue proclamado Damanhur, Su visión era tan precisa que sólo unos cuantos sabían qué exactamente estaban haciendo cuando les dijo de empezar a cavar. Unos 10 años y 2 millones de cubos llenos de piedra más tarde, las primeras salas de los templos estaban acabadas. Según los ‘Damanhurianos’, nadie se acuerda cómo y donde encontraron la fuerza para hacer un trabajo tan extraordinario. Imagínense que durante los primeros años excavaron todo a mano, usando sólo martillos y picos. Más adelante utilizaron martillos eléctricos, pero aun así el trabajo fue agotador. Los templos en una superficie de más de 8.500 metros cúbicos, sobre cinco distintos niveles, unidos por cientos de metros de pasillos se encuentran en la junta de las placas continentales de Eurasia y África y liberan uno de los más antiguos minerales de este planeta, la Milonita negra, transportando la energía del centro del planeta a la superficie. Con los años llegaron más ayudantes y la gente de la aldea empezaron a preguntarse qué estaba pasando, así que el lugar místico fue visitado por la policía local para ver de qué se trataba. En la primera visita encontraron solamente un grupo de desconocidos que se hacen llamar ‘Damanhurianos’ y los temp12

los no fueron descubiertos por las autoridades. Pero un día, las autoridades recibieron una carta anónima donde algunos templos ocultos fueron mencionados y decidieron tomar medidas legales: Carabinieri investigó el lugar, acompañado por el alcalde. A la llegada se les mostró la entrada a los templos. Una vez bajando por las escaleras, no podían creer lo que estaban viendo. Volvieron con en lagrimas en los ojos, asombrados por la hermosura de que lo que han sido testigos y dijeron “Estos templos deben ser protegidos “. Como no existía ninguna ley específica que regula la construcción subterránea en esta zona donde los templos fueron ubicados, la comunidad de Damanhur fue aceptada por las autoridades.

Y AQUÍ ESTÁ LA HISTORIA DE NUESTRA VISITA Buscando el camino de Valchiusella nos dimos cuenta que no podíamos fallar, fue como ser atraído por un imán y llegamos a una carretera con muchas curvas que nos llevó directamente al valle. Llegamos a Damanhur Crea, el centro de Damanhur que consiste de un gran edificio que antiguamente fue una fábrica de Olivetti. Hoy en día es el punto de encuentro para todos los Damanhurianos y cuenta con diferentes talleres artesanales, un centro médico de curación con resonancia magnética, un restaurante ecológico, diferentes salas de exposición y una gran sala de conferencia. Devolver la vida a este edificio uniéndolo con el pueblo después de tantos años dio el fin a la agonía. Fuimos a conocer Macaco, nuestra guía y uno de los mayores miembros de Damanhur. Su nombre se deriva de un mono y nos dijo que es común que Damanhurianos eligen el nombre de un animal en vez de usar su nombre real. Este nombre ha de ser aceptado por la comunidad y tras su aprobación uno puede utilizar este alter ego. El animal refleja el carácter de la persona y

simboliza la dedicación de los miembros después de dejar su vida anterior.

Desde la recepción nos llevó a nuestra habitación donde pasamos la noche. Al día siguiente nos levantamos temprano para visitar los templos. Después el check-in nos encontramos de nuevo en el vestíbulo y nos invitó a tomar asiento delante de un mueble con una planta donde un sonido superior, extraño pero armónico llenaba el espacio. Junto a la planta vimos dos pequeños dispositivos y dos altavoces. ‘¿Están listos para experimentar algo increíble? , nos pregunto estando junto a la planta. Empezó a cantar una melodía que, después de un tiempo, resonaba de un modo diferente a través de los altavoces. “Es la planta que interpreta mi melodía”... Me encantaría ver vuestras caras mientras están leyendo esto, pero estoy seguro que no es ni la mitad de la reacción asombrosa en nuestras caras cuando vimos eso. La melodía que ella había cantado, fue interpretada por la planta de una manera muy similar, pero diferente. Mientras la melodía aun sonaba, nos dijo de acercarnos. Los dispositivos estaban conectados a la planta por dos cables, uno salía de la parte posterior y estaba conectado a una hoja, el otro cable de la parte trasera del otro dispositivo a la raíz. Al quitar el cable de la hoja la melodía dejo de sonar de inmediato. “Antes de vivir esta experiencia yo era vegetariana”, dijo Macaco, “pero después de esto mi punto de vista cambió. Las plantas tienen una conciencia igual que los animales, entonces ¿dónde está la diferencia entre comer un animal o una planta? De alguna manera estaba contento de oír eso ya que siempre hablo con mis plantas en casa, hasta darles nombres - y también como carne. “La mejor nutrición es una buena mezcla de todo. Preferiblemente 100% orgánico y sin aditivos, pero tenemos que comer un poco de todo para dar todo lo que nuestro cuerpo necesita para su perfecto funcionamiento”.

Macaco dice que también se pueden conectar otros dispositivos a la planta tales como una cerradura. La planta sólo dejaría entrar gente con una vibración positiva, todos los demás se quedarían detrás de una puerta cerrada. “También conectamos un proveedor automático de agua a la planta, pero lo tuvimos que quitar ya que la planta se enganchó al agua y no dejó de regar sí mismo.” Como un jonqui...

Pero, cómo puñetas funciona? Basado en el e-metro, un dispositivo originalmente desarrollado por Volney Mathison en los años ´40, funciona mediante el uso de un puente de Wheatstone, un circuito muy sensible que detecta los mas menores cambios - en este caso, la resistencia eléctrica se convierte en sonido, por lo que es audible para nuestros oídos, midiendo la resistencia minuciosa de corrientes eléctricas dentro de las plantas y árboles. Estas corrientes son de una millonésima parte de un voltaje eléctrico. (Todos los organismos, ya sean mamíferos, anfibios o plantas, cuentan con las corrientes eléctricas que corren dentro del mismo. En los seres humanos, el cerebro se comunica a través del sistema nervioso para controlar los órganos, extremidades, la vista, etc., utilizando cargas eléctricas débiles.) Los cables están conectados a dos receptores, uno a la raíz de la planta y el segundo a una hoja. El medidor está conectado a un disparador, un sintetizador controlado por voltaje o un dispositivo midi similar. El cambio en la resistencia eléctrica de la planta controla el tono, el volumen y el filtrado. La investigación descubrió que las plantas reaccionan en función de su entorno. Luz, agua, sonido y la energía emocional, incluso el interior de una habitación produce alteraciones significativas a la corriente eléctrica de la planta. Norman Lederman fue el verdadero pionero de este dispositivo que ofreció el primer concierto de plantas en sonido cuad-

Si las plantas tienen una conciencia podríamos educar a nuestros hijos a apreciar la vida vegetal de un modo totalmente nuevo dando un impacto positivo a nuestras futuras generaciones, fomentando la conservación en lugar de la deforestación y la destrucción de lo que queda de nuestra antigua y tan bonita planeta verde. Después de este primer gran impacto nuestros sentidos estaban al borde de lo que estaba por venir. Decidimos cenar e acostarnos temprano, ya que queríamos visitar los templos a la mañana siguiente. Despertar en este entorno tan verde es algo magnifico, oliendo la pureza del aire y sintiendo las vibraciones de lo que nos rodea. Nos encontramos de nuevo con Macaco y nos llevó a uno de los primeros templos, un lugar dedicado a las ceremonias y encuentros, rodeado de columnas de piedra y un cristal de cuarzo masivo entronizado en el altar. Junto a él hay un jardín con enormes monolitos de granito para conectar con la Tierra y espirales de piedra para purificar a ti mismo a lo largo del camino. Después nos dirigimos a una montaña con un grupo de gente para explorar los templos. Se permiten sólo siete personas a la vez para entrar en los templos, acompañados por un guía y un traductor italiano. Un ascensor nos llevó hacia abajo. Es difícil decir hasta qué punto ya que salimos en el Templo Azul, seguido por la Sala del Agua, el Salón de la Tierra, el Salón de los Metales, el Salón de las Esferas, el Laberinto y por último, el Salón de los Espejos. Para explicar todo en detalle llenaría más que una revista entera, pero os puedo asegurar que es algo que jamás han visto en toda su vida. Cada sala tiene su propio significado. En el Salón de la Tierra está documentada nuestra historia desde el principio hasta el futuro cercano en una marquetería fina, con un techo lleno de leds formando un antiguo cielo estrellado que se refleja en el suelo de mármol negro pulido dando la sensación que estas flotando en el espacio. En el Salón de los Metales se muestran los diferentes metales de nuestro planeta con el fuego como protagonista de la sala. El Salón del Agua está dedicado al principio femenino, tallado en forma de cáliz. El Salón de los Espejos está dedicado a la luz, aire, cielo, sol y vida, siendo una celebración del re-despertar del ser humano, la reunificación de la Humanidad como el principio espiritual y divino, coronado con la cúpula más grande del mundo hecha a mano de cristalería. El salón entero refleja los colores y las imágenes en una secuencia interminable estimu6.2

Un gong colocado en una esquina tocando sonidos y mientras estas parado en el centro de la sala, alcanzan unas vibraciones tan intensas que hace que uno casi desvanece en el sonido omnipresente que llena toda la sala. Las vías que conectan los pasillos tienen numerosas puertas ocultas y escaleras invisibles, tal y como las pirámides de Egipto. Todo el tiempo me preguntaba cómo es posible que todo esto ha sido construido a mano de la fuerza humana - como dije al principio, somos capaces de hacer mucho más de lo que creemos posible... Después de salir de los templos uno se siente como haber vuelto a la Tierra de otro planeta en el espacio o un mundo paralelo: El cuerpo está vibrando y recargado de una energía divina. Es difícil describir, pero sin duda se siente la sensación de haber sido testigo de la experiencia más hermosa y extraordinaria de mi vida.

Nos dirigimos de nuevo a Damanhur Crea para comer algo y visitar la exposición de pinturas de su fundador, Oberto Airaudi. Pintó miles (!) y aún sigue pintando. Cada pieza de arte es única, pintada en colores múltiples y expuestas a los cambios de la luz da otra gran experiencia. Empecé a dudar seriamente si todo esto es el trabajo humano, o si hay una fuerza divina promoviendo todo esto. A la salida de Damanhur, Macaco nos mostró una casa que construyeron en un pueblo cercano, una casa totalmente autosuficiente hecha enteramente de materiales no contaminantes con una granja donde todo es orgánico y los animales son de cría ética. Encontramos un zorro atrapado en una de las vallas y como conseguimos liberarlo sin ser mordido sabíamos que este día sin duda era especial y que nada pasa por coincidencia. Antes de irnos para siempre visitamos una habitación en la antigua granja convertido en un restaurante donde Sting fue el último invitado. Abrumado por la belleza de los templos y la calidad de vida que los Damanhurianos crearon de la nada, decidió apoyar este 14

Hasta el año pasado no habia descubierto Cala Nova en Es Canar justo pasando Sta. Eulalia – es increible descubrir playas después 16 años viviendo en Ibiza... Una amplia playa con posibilidad de montar las olas o pasear con tu perro, incluso hay una parte nudista. Este año Atzaró abrió otro establecimiento, un lógico paso de avance – y nació el Atzaró Beach. Una fusión de restaurante y chiringuito con un lounge en la playa, es el foco de este nuevo punto de encuentro. Nada mas llegar a Cala Nova se encuentra el nuevo restaurante en la parte derecha. Abajo a unos pocos metros a la izquierda esta el chiringuito a pie de playa. Si combinas todo esto con la profesionalidad y la experiencia del equipo del Atzaró, ya te puedes imaginar lo que te espera. JOHANNES GOLLER IS THE MAN IN CHARGE OF COCOON IBIZA SINCE 12 YEARS NOW, AND THE SUCCESS OF COCOON SHOWS HE KNOWS EXACTLY WHAT HE IS DOING. In 1988 his parents decided to go on holiday to Ibiza and Johannes was a sweet 13 year old. They stayed in a hotel opposite Space and he saw the party people entering Space every morning when they went for breakfast, wondering what was going on in there, wanting to be part of it. The next five years they returned to the island every summer for holiday but his dream was to spend a whole season on the island to become part of the craze. Already infected by local clubs in Germany like the infamous Omen, Sven Väth’s first club in Frank-

furt, and the Stammheim in Kassel, he became friends withTalida, Sven’s ex Manager. In 1999 she told him that they decided to start a residency in Ibiza with Cocoon, offering him a job as a driver, becoming part of the promotion team in Ibiza - gotcha! The following year the man in charge, Michi, decided to leave Cocoon and Sven offered him the job to run Cocoon Ibiza as he trusted him and saw the potential of young Johannes. Twelve years later he is still in charge and Cocoon is getting better and better. Asking him on what defines Cocoon he says ‘The core of Cocoon is definitely the music, but what is even stronger is the way the whole team lives and breathes Cocoon with all that comes with it. We invite people to become part of it, not just visiting us but become an active member shaping the nights all together.’ In the early years of Cocoon the island was all about Trance and cheesy House, there was no Techno scene, some DJs were booked from time to time but never before any promoter tried to estab6.2

lish a concept for a whole season. The mix of Sven Väth playing solid Techno and Ricardo Villalobos with his hypnotic deep House was an instant success and Cocoon stayed true to their principles until today. ‘We created this hype, we never jumped on any hype train, that is what makes the essence of Cocoon. Our music was, is and always will be underground, we stay true to ourselves.’ In the mid nineties it was a few promoters shaping the scene of Ibiza, like Manumission with their hugely succesful concept consisting in parties having a theme including a massive stage design and the wildest dancers, combining show with music creating a hype that had no antecessors. Home that later would become We Love took over the sunday daytime parties bringing superstar DJs onto the terrace of Space having massive impact as well but it was another force that would shape the island to what it is today, our beloved DC10. Johannes says ‘I remember all of us going to Space Sunday daytime then later on to the Jockey Club in Cala Jondal only to keep grooving until DC10 would open to blow our minds. It was Cirillo and his guests playing in this small club. Tania Vulcano started there too, even Ricardo Villalobos became a regular - this was another milestone in the history of Ibiza, this was a time of change. DC10 as well did not jump on anybody elses train, they created something completely new. My biggest respect goes to those who have the balls to create something new, first with their own people then growing naturally, by quality not by a budget. Anybody with a big sponsor can take over something and make it bigger, that’s very easy, but taking the risk and start something new is what it is all about.’ Another question comes into my mind imagining how tough it is to survive on this island, the question of ‘How true do you have to be to yourself if you wanna make it in Ibiza?’ The answer is crystal clear, ‘As true as you can because only then you will achieve happiness and success. Of course you have to make a lot of compromises, as in a relationship or in any other situation that involves other people, you have to be professional and satisfy a lot of needs that are not always necessarily your own ones. The secret is to create a positive tension that always leads to something new in a good way. At the moment you create something that works you will always have people copying you but they are always one step behind so if you stay true to yourself and focus on what you want to do without looking too much on the others you will make it. That implies as well that you protect yourself from others in a way to not let them confuse you as this leads to chaos.’ We move on to the fact that today every DJ wants to have his own night in Ibiza, there is no place in the world where you see so many billboards with a DJ’s face on it promoting more the person than the party as a concept. ‘This movement is kind of logic as the whole scene is getting bigger and bigger, artists work with their booking agency and their own management nowadays. Managers by nature want to make more and more money for the artist and themselves. The epicentre of electronic dance music in summer definitely is Ibiza so it is obvious that every DJ tries to have his own night here. In the late nineties there were a lot of promoters like Manumission, Home, Cream, Gods Kitchen and numerous more, today if I 22

count there are maybe four or five left, all the other parties are built around a big name DJ. Cocoon was and is a big family. We had Richie Hawtin playing for us for thirteen years, Ricardo plays for us since our very first party, Loco Dice is with us for about eight years, Carola for three years. This particular sound, which all those artists are standing for, was only available Mondays at Amnesia. Our music is a niche, it is not commercial, it stays true to itself and it used to only happen at Cocoon. That Richie is doing his own party now is understandable, Richie has a huge company behind him to produce his own night but we will see if the cake is big enough for all. There are about twenty nights now presenting underground House and Techno music but i doubt that all will make it through. We miss a lot of spanish and italian clubbers this year due to the tough crisis we face right now so it is definitely a year of challenge and proof for all of us promoters to see if our concept works or not.’ Already last year Cocoon started a new project taking their concept to a small club in Formentera called Tipic, the former Xueño, and it again was a huge success from the very start. ‘Luana, A friend of mine called me in Winter 2010/11 and told me about some italians from Milano taking over the Xueño, refurbishing it totally and installing a new soundsystem, and they told her to ask us if we could imagine doing parties there. Arriving to Ibiza in 2011 I went to Formentera and immediately fell in love with the club and we decided to take the challenge. All our DJs agreed (who wouldn’t...) to stay a bit longer and play in Formentera as well. We did eleven parties in 2011 and it was amazing to see how the locals accepted the party, especially the workers who normally come to Ibiza to party and take the first ferry back to go to work straight away. We did not know we have such a big fan base in Formentera, I remember one guy coming and saying ‘Gracias a dios - finally Cocoon is in Formentera’ so he made himself a tattoo with Cocoon Formentera written on his arm! So for sure we continue this year, we built it up slowly last year and this year our opening was already a killer. Sven played the opening and Loco Dice will play the closing and lots of our guest DJs will play there inbetween.’ There is one thing that defines Cocoon as well - the infamous after hours they were chased for all around the island, giving their core people the chance to keep partying in a secret location to give something back to them. ‘We did them everywhere, open air, on beaches, in private houses, wherever we found a cool place we organized afterparties to celebrate an almost 24 hours musical journey á la Cocoon starting in the club and keep grooving throughout the whole next day until the night. Today it is easier as daytime parties on beaches are possible again so it is kind of our duty to continue after the club and we do it with greatest pleasure.’ One question i have to ask Johannes is the omnipresent discussion about the price politics in Ibiza. ‘I think we reached a limit for the drink prices but concerning the bookings of tables and VIP areas there is a lot more to come. More and more people come to the island and they don’t care about the prices, they want the best tables at any cost. The big challenge is on how to satisfy all as one needs the other, you won’t find a packed VIP area and an empty dancefloor, VIPs want to be seen and have a good party in a packed club so if the normal people can not afford to go out

any more the others won’t come as well. We tried several times to appeal to the clubs to lower the drink prices, at least for water and beer, but nobody seems to want to take the first step... We as a promoter have no direct influence on the drink’s prices.’ Why not let the VIPs finance the parties and give the normal clubber the drinks for a reasonable price? ‘That is already happening, but the final decision has to come from all the clubs together, one alone will not start this.’ Another classic of mine is the question of what would you do if you had a magic wand and could change one thing instantly on Ibiza. ‘The one thing that needs to be changed not only in Ibiza but everywhere is the fact that we need to end corruption and cronyism, giving the same rights to all people, this would immediately recover our economical situation and change all to the better.’ What does Johannes Goller do to recharge batteries after a long and exhausting season in Ibiza? ‘I take off the month of November and go to the Himalaya, the last years I visited Nepal and this year it will be Bhutan, no cell phones, no civilisation, only nature sleeping in a tent in close contact with mother nature. I love trekking, it grounds my body and chills my mind. Meeting the Spirits up there is a unique experience that reconnects me with what is really important in life.’ Cocoon does not stop in the off season, they will celebrate their first big COCOON HEROES event in London at Pleasure Gardens in December, a tour in Australia is in the pipeline, another one in South America is already established, another trip to Japan will take place so for all lovers of Cocoon there is the possibility to follow them around the globe for a 12 months journey, becoming the biggest heroe they can possibly be. Mediados los años ´90 eran unos cuantos promotores dando forma a la escena de Ibiza, como “Manumission” con su concepto de gran éxito que consistía de fiestas temáticas con un escenario de gran diseño y los bailarines más salvajes, combinando un espectáculo con música y creando un bombo que no tenía antecesores. “Home” que más adelante se convirtió en “We Love” se hizo cargo de las fiestas diurnas de los domingos, trayendo los DJs de fama a la terraza del Space con gran impacto, pero era otra fuerza que daría forma a la isla a lo que es hoy en día, nuestro querido DC10.

DESDE HACE 12 AÑOS, JOHANNES GOLLER ES EL HOMBRE A CARGO DE COCOON IBIZA Y EL ÉXITO DE COCOON MUESTRA QUE SABE EXACTAMENTE LO QUE ESTÁ HACIENDO.

Johannes dice: “Me acuerdo que todos los Domingos nos íbamos al Space y luego al Jockey Club en Cala Jondal sólo para hacer tiempo hasta que el DC10 abriera sus puertas para hacernos flipar en colores. Eran Cirillo y sus invitados que pinchaban en este pequeño club. Es donde también Tania Vulcano comenzó, hasta Ricardo Villalobos se convirtió en un habitual ahí - eso fue otro hito en la historia de Ibiza, era un momento de cambio. DC10 tampoco salto al carro de otro bombo, crearon algo completamente nuevo. Mi mayor respeto es para aquellos que tienen las pelotas para crear algo nuevo, primero con su gente y creciendo de forma natural, en calidad, no en presupuesto. Cualquier persona con un gran patrocinador puede hacerse cargo de engrandecer algo, una cosa fácil, pero arriesgarse e iniciar algo nuevo es lo que vale. “

En 1988, cuando Johannes era un yogurín de 13 años, sus padres decidieron ir de vacaciones a Ibiza. Se alojaron en un hotel frente al Space y cada mañana cuando bajaban a desayunar veía la gente entrar al Space, preguntándose qué estaba pasando allí, con ganas de ser parte de ello. Los cinco años siguientes volvieron a visitar la isla, pero su sueño era pasar una temporada en la isla formando parte de la locura. Ya enganchado a los clubes en Alemania, como el famoso Omen , el primer club de Sven Väth en Frankfurt y el Stammheim en Kassel, se hizo amigo de Talida, ex manager de Sven. En 1999, ella le comentó que decidieron empezar una residencia en Ibiza con Cocoon y le ofreció un trabajo como chofer formando parte del equipo de promoción en Ibiza - Toma ya!

Otra pregunta que me viene a la mente al imaginar lo difícil que es sobrevivir en esta isla: “Como de fiel hay que ser a uno mismo para tener éxito en Ibiza? la respuesta es clara: “Lo más fiel posible, porque así se puede alcanzar la felicidad y el éxito. Está claro que hay que hacer muchos compromisos, como en una relación o en cualquier otra situación que involucra a otras personas. Ser profesional y satisfacer muchas necesidades que no siempre son tus propias. El secreto es crear una tensión positiva que siempre lleva a algo nuevo en el buen sentido. En el momento de crear algo que funcione, siempre habrá gente que copia, pero que siempre se quedan un paso detrás, así que si te quedas fiel a ti mismo y te centras en lo que quieres hacer, sin mirar demasiado lo que hacen

LO MAS FIEL POSIBLE

Al año siguiente, el hombre a cargo, Michi, decidió dejar Cocoon y Sven le ofreció el puesto ya que confiaba en él y vio el potencial del joven Johannes. Doce años más tarde, todavía está a cargo y Cocoon está cada vez mejor. A la pregunta: “Que define a Cocoon.?”, dice “El alma de Cocoon es sin duda la música, pero lo que aun mas vale es como el equipo de Cocoon vive y respira todo que conlleva la fiesta. Invitamos a todos a formar parte de ello y no sólo que nos visiten, sino que se conviertan en un miembro activo tallando las noches en conjunto”. En los primeros años de Cocoon todo giraba alrededor del Trance y el House travieso, no hubo ninguna escena Techno. Algunos DJs fueron invitados de vez en cuando, pero ningún promotor trató de establecer un concepto para toda la temporada. La mezcla de Sven Väth pinchando Techno sólido y de Ricardo Villalobos con su hipnótico deep house fue un éxito instantáneo y Cocoon se mantuvo fiel a sus principios hasta la actualidad. “Hemos creado este bombo, en vez de subirnos al carro de otro bombo y esa es la esencia de Cocoon. Nuestra música era, es y será siempre Underground, seguimos fieles a nosotros mismos. “

Eso implica también que te protejas y que no dejes que te confundan, ya que esto conduce al caos. “ Llegamos al tema de que todos los DJs hoy en día quieren tener su propia noche en Ibiza. No hay un lugar en el mundo donde se ven tantas vallas publicitarias con la imagen de un DJ que promociona más la persona que un concepto. “Este movimiento es más o menos lógico ya que la escena crece cada vez más, artistas trabajan más con sus agencias y los que les gestionan en la actualidad. Los managers claramente quieren hacer más dinero para el artista y para ellos mismos. El epicentro de la música electrónica en verano esta sin duda en Ibiza por lo que está claro que todos los DJ intentan tener su propia noche aquí. Al finales de los años ´90 había una gran cantidad de promotores como Manumission, Home, Cream, God´s Kitchen y muchos más, Hoy en día si me pongo a contar quedan tal vez unos cuatro o cinco, todas las demás fiestas se construyen entorno de un DJ de renombre. Cocoon era y sigue siendo una gran familia. Teníamos a Richie Hawtin pinchando para nosotros durante trece años, Ricardo pincha para nosotros desde la primera fiesta, Loco Dice lleva unos ocho años con nosotros, Carola durante tres años. Este sonido tan particular, que todos los artistas nos traen sólo están disponibles los lunes en Amnesia. Nuestra música es un nicho, que no es comercial manteniéndose fiel a sí mismo, cosa que sólo solía ocurrir en Cocoon. Que Richie está haciendo su propia fiesta es comprensible, Richie tiene una gran empresa detrás de él para producir su propia noche, pero veremos si el pastel es suficientemente grande para todos. Ahora hay una veintena de noches presentando Underground House y Techno, pero dudo que salga adelante. Este año, echamos en falta un montón de españoles e italianos debido a la dura crisis que estamos enfrentando en estos momentos por lo que sin duda es un año de desafío y una prueba para todos los promotores para ver si el concepto funciona o no. “ Ya el año pasado Cocoon inició un proyecto nuevo llevando el concepto a un pequeño club de Formentera llamado Tipic, anteriormente el Xueño y de nuevo fue un gran éxito desde el principio. “Luana, una amigo mía, me llamó en el invierno 2010/11 y me comentó que unos italianos de Milán se han hecho cargo del Xueño. Lo reformaron completamente, además instalaron un nuevo sistema de sonido y dijeron a Luana de preguntarnos si podíamos hacernos la idea de hacer fiestas ahí. Al llegar a Ibiza en el año 2011 me fui a Formentera e inmediatamente me enamoré del club y nos decidimos aceptar el desafío. Todos nuestros DJs estaban de acuerdo (como no.?) de quedarse un poco más para también pinchar en Formentera. Hicimos once fiestas en 2011 y fue increíble ver cómo la gente aceptó la fiesta, especialmente los trabajadores que normalmente vienen a Ibiza para ir de fiesta y toman el primer ferri de vuelta para ir a trabajar de tirón. No sabíamos que tenemos una gran cantidad de fans en Formentera. Me acuerdo de un tipo que vino a comentarme: “Gracias a Dios - por fin esta Cocoon en Formentera.” Así que se hizo un tatuaje con “Cocoon Formentera” escrito en el brazo! Por lo tanto este año continuamos. Lo montamos poco a poco el año pasado y este año nuestra apertura ya era un crack. Sven pinchó en la apertura y Loco Dice pinchará en el cierre y una gran selección de DJs invitados pinchará a lo largo de verano. “ 26

Hay otra cosa más que define a Cocoon – los famosos afters que fueron perseguidos por toda la isla, dando a las personas clave la oportunidad de seguir la fiesta en un lugar secreto y así devolverles algo. “Las hicimos en todas partes, al aire libre, en las playas, en casas privadas. Donde hemos encontrado un lugar guay lo hemos organizado para celebrar una fiesta de casi 24 horas con un viaje musical “a lo Cocoon” empezando por la noche y siguiendo a lo largo del día hasta la siguiente noche. Hoy en día es más fácil ya que ha vuelto la posibilidad de hacer fiestas de día en las playas, así que es nuestro deber continuar la fiesta tras el cierre del club y lo hacemos con mucho gusto. “ Una pregunta que he de hacer a Johannes es la discusión omnipresente sobre la política de precios en Ibiza. “Creo que hemos llegado a un límite para los precios de las bebidas, pero sobre las reservas de mesas y zonas VIP hay mucho más por venir. Más y más personas vienen a la isla que no se preocupan por los precios, y quieren las mejores mesas a cualquier precio. El gran desafío está en cómo satisfacer a todos ya que una cosa no va sin la otra. No encontrarás una zona VIP llena y una pista de baile vacía. Los personajes quieren ser vistos y tener una buena fiesta en un club lleno de gente y si la gente de la pista no se puede permitir el lujo de salir, los demás tampoco vendrían. Hemos intentado varias veces hacer un llamamiento a los clubes para bajar los precios de las bebidas, al menos para el agua y la cerveza, pero nadie quiere dar el primer paso... Nosotros, como promotores no tenemos ninguna influencia sobre los precios de las bebidas. “ Por qué no dejar que los VIPs financian las fiestas y ofrecer los fiesteros un precio razonable para las bebidas? “Eso ya está sucediendo, pero la decisión final he que venir de todos los clubes en conjunto, uno solo no lo iniciará. Otro clásico de una de mis preguntas: Si tuvieras una varita mágica para poder cambiar algo en un instante en Ibiza, que sería.? “La única cosa que necesita ser cambiada y no sólo en Ibiza sino en todas partes, es acabar con la corrupción y el amiguismo, dar los mismos derechos a todas las personas. Nuestra situación económica se recuperaría de inmediato y todo cambiaria para la mejor”. Qué hace Johannes Goller para recargar las pilas después de una temporada larga y agotadora en Ibiza? “En el mes de noviembre me voy al Himalaya. En los últimos años he visitado Nepal y este año será Bután donde no hay teléfonos móviles ni civilización, donde duermo en mi carpa en contacto con la madre naturaleza. Me encanta el senderismo, me conecta a la tierra y libera mi mente. Encontrarme con los espíritus es una experiencia única que me repone en contacto con lo que realmente es importante en la vida. “ Cocoon no parra durante el invierno. En diciembre celebrarán su primer gran evento COCOON HEROES en Londres en los Pleasure Gardens, el proyecto de una gira en Australia esta en marcha, otro en Sur América ya establecido y también otro viaje a Japón. Así que para todos los amantes de Cocoon, existe la posibilidad de seguirnos por todo el mundo durante 12 meses, convirtiéndose en el héroe más grande. THERE ARE OPPORTUNITIES YOU CAN NOT LET PASS BY, AND HAVING THE HONOUR TO DO AN INTERVIEW WITH LUCIANO IS DEFINITELY ONE OF THEM, EVEN IF IT HAPPENED ON THE VERY LAST MINUTE OF THIS EDITION AND MEANT ANOTHER SLEEPLESS NIGHT. LUCIANO, IT IS MY UTMOST PLEASURE TO WELCOME YOU IN DUB MAGAZINE. The pleasure is mine, as always. TELL US, HOW IS THE SEASON FOR THE VAGABUNDOS IN PACHA SO FAR? Fabulous, we had a very organized season so far and we got a great team together that works hand in hand. The crowd is as always very special with an excellent vibe, we cannot ask for more. TALKING ABOUT THE VAGABUNDOS, IS IT TRUE THAT SAMUEL GUETTA INVENTED THE CONCEPT? On a trip to Brazil the people were calling us ‘Vagabundos’ for our appearances and the way we were travelling and we pretty much liked the idea. It was the perfect name for what we stand for, so we kept the name being convinced that this was the beginning of a great concept. Samuel was part of this team and was of great help with his unique energy and ideas. HOW DID YOU GET TO KNOW SAMUEL? My son became really good friend with his son Neo in the french school they both attend and so we met and went along really well starting to exchange ideas. It was a moment where I needed somebody to develop Cadenza even more and it seemed to me that Samuel had good ideas and concepts to achieve this. DID YOU HAVE A GOOD RELATION AFTER YOU SEPARATED? Separations are never easy, we had different visions of work and it became clear that we would go separate ways. We did this in the most professional way and each one went on his own path. We are shaken to the core and sad about the death of Samuel... DOES MONEY CORRUPT? No I don’t think so, it depends on the way you handle it. If money is the final goal then yes, but if you use it to achieve greater things then definitely not. If one uses money to develop a greater creativity making things better, putting together a great team and paying well the people that work by your side it is of great help. If your only goal is making money then its dark side will come out. HOW WOULD YOU DEFINE ‘UNDERGROUND’? It is a space where new movements come to life that are not known to the people and media. It is where new ideas are born in any sort of art and start to take shape because they are created through creativity - as the name says already. When they become popular afterwards they are no longer Underground.

NEWS FROM CADENZA? We are creating two headquarters, on in Berlin and the other one here in Ibiza, both perfect spots for our work. Musicwise we just released the album from Maayan Nidam and we are very happy about the reaction from the people. Productionwise it is very important that each artist has his own space to form part of the concept in general, like this you can achieve a great output. My new album is coming out end of summer, it was hard work and I put all my spirit and heart into it, concentrating more on the acoustic part then to see how it works on the dancefloor. Obviously it is dance music but with a lot of harmonies and melodies, different rhythms - I can say I am very happy with the result. AND THEN THERE ARE THE REMIXERS TO ADAPT IT TO THE FLOOR. Exactly. We will release a kind of preview to the album in form of an EP that includes various mixes of one track. I SAW AN INCREDIBLE VIDEO OF A PARTY YOU ORGANIZED IN THE TRAINSTATION ON THE FRENCH-SPANISH BORDER IN LA JONQUERA. HOW DID THAT COME TO LIFE? We are always attentive to what our fans want but as the whole concept is growing and growing it is difficult to satisfy all those that can not attend our big events. From there on we decided to organize something totally free without anybody knowing it will happen, going back to our roots where we came from. I wanna thank especially Alex Montoya for the great job on the station. It was a quite risky undertaking in terms of making it sound good, we needed to have a lot of people to fill the station in order to get the best sound possible and we said ‘let’s see what happens...’ We did a minimal promotion that something would happen there and it became a total frenzy, incredible how the people attended and received us. The station was completely packed and the vibe was spectacular. HOW IS YOUR PERFECT DAY? Getting up early without a hangover, do a bit of sports in the morning to later on be with my kids and family, eat well to then spend the day on the beach with friends, a good dinner and going to bed early. If you live the way I do always on the run it is very difficult to get some time off to enjoy being with your family and beloved ones, so this is what a perfect day for me looks like. IF YOU WOULD HAVE A MAGIC WAND AND COULD CHANGE ONE THING IN IBIZA, WHAT WOULD THAT BE? Definitely more freedom in terms of being able to do a nice party in the morning when you leave the Vagabundos or cocoon or any other party in a protected green space where people can come together to celebrate respecting the ambiance. Best would be directly from 8 am until late under the spiritual skies of Ibiza. HOW DO YOU SEE THIS YEAR WHERE EVERYBODY IS TALKING ABOUT THE CHANGES TO COME, EVEN THE END OF ALL DAYS? It is the beginning of a new era with a different consciousness, not at all the end of all days but the opposite. I don’t believe at all in the end of our world but there is definitely a new energy taking place in the last few years. For me personally I can say that especially the last year was very positive. It is very important that lots of people talk about a change, like this a new consciousness will create itself and this is something we desperately need. 6.2

LUCIANO, ES UN GRAN PLACER PODER HABLAR CONTIGO Y DARTE LA BIENVENIDA POR EL DUB. Encantado estoy, como siempre. ¿CUENTANOS, COMO VA LA TEMPORADA DE LOS VAGABUNDOS EN PACHA? Superbien, hemos tenido un año muy organizado, cuento con un gran equipo y trabajamos muy bien. Siempre hemos tenido muy buena gente con un rollo muy especial, estamos muy feliz, más no se puede desear. ¿HABLANDO DE VAGABUNDOS, ERA SAMUEL GUETTA QUE INVENTO EL CONCEPTO? En un viaje a Brazil que hizimos, nos encontrabamos con la gente, llamandonos ‘Los Vagabundos sin futuro’ por la manera en que viajamos y como nos presentamos y nos gusto la idea. Era el nombre perfecto por lo que representamos, vamos lo de ‘sin futuro’ era una broma que se añadio pero el nombre de Vagabundos nos gustó mucho y todo el equipo estaba de acuerdo que esto podría ser el comienzo de un gran concepto. Samuel formaba parte de este equipo y era de gran ayuda con su energía y sus ideas. ¿COMO HAS CONOCIDO A SAMUEL? Fue a traves de nuestros niños, mi hijo se hizo super amigo de su hijo Neo en el colegio frances donde van a la escuela y al conocernos empezabamos a intercambiar ideas. Fue un momento en que yo necesitaba alguien para desarollar Cadenza aun más y Samuel me parecio una persona con buenas ideas y conceptos, justo lo que estaba buscando. ¿DESPUES DE QUE OS HABEIS SEPERADO HUBO BUENA RELACIÓN? Las seperaciones nunca son faciles, teníamos distintas visiones de como desarrollar el trabajo y a partir de ahí estaba claro que nuestros caminos se partian. Nos separamos de manera muy profesional y cada uno ha seguido su camino. Y por supuesto por lo que acaba de pasar estamos todos muy tocados y tristes por la muerte de Samuel...

EL DINERO CORROMPE? No creo, depende de que forma lo tomas. Si el dinero es una finalidad sí que corrompe, pero si es un medio para lograr cosas, el dinero no corrompe. Si usas el dinero para desarrollar tu creatividad y hacer algo mejor, sea formar un gran equipo y pagar bien a tu gente para que sean contentos, es de gran ayuda. Si el dinero es lo que buscas, ahí si que sale el lado oscuro del dinero. ¿COMO DEFINES LA PALABRA UNDERGROUND? Es un espacio donde se genera un cierto tipo de movimientos desconocida por la gente y los medios. Es ahí donde nacen las ideas en cualquier campo de arte y empiezan a tomar forma, se desarrollan de manera creativa. Cuando luego tienen cierta popularidad dejan de ser Underground. ¿QUE NOVEDADES HAY DE CADENZA? Estamos creando dos bases por el sello en sí, una sera en Berlin y la otra en Ibiza. Son dos lugares perfectos para desarrollar nuestro trabajo. Musicalmente hemos sacado el album de Maayan Nidam y estamos muy contentos de ver como fue recibido. A nivel de nuevas producciones es muy importante dejar a cada artista el espacio para que tenga su sitio en el concepto general y asi salen cosas increibles. Por mi lado voy a sacar mi nuevo album a finales del verano, estoy trabajando mucho poniendole toda mi alma y corazón concentrandome más en la parte acustica que en la pista de baile. Obviamente es música de baile pero hay mucha harmonia y melodia, diferentes ritmos – vamos, estoy muy contento con los resultados hasta ahora. Y luego estan los remixes para convertir las canciones mas acusticas en temas de pista. Exactamente. Estamos a punto de sacar una preestreno del album, un primer EP que ya cuenta con diferentes mezclas del mismo tema. ¿HE VISTO UN VIDEO DE UNA FIESTA QUE HIZISTEIS DURANTE EL SONAR FESTIVAL EN LA JONQUERA EN UNA ESTACIÓN DE TREN Y ME PARECIÓ INCREIBLE. COMO HA SURGIDO ESTA IDEA? Siempre estamos atentos a los deseos de la gente pero como todo el concepto se ha vuelto mas grande es dificil satisfacer a todos los que no pueden venir a los eventos grandes que hacemos. Y de allí nos parecio una gran idea de montar una fiesta totalmente gratis sin que nadie sepa que iba pasar, volviendo a los raíces de donde hemos venido. Sobre todo quiero dar las gracias a Alex Montoya que ha hecho un gran trabajo. Era bastante arriesgado porque de la forma sonora era muy dificil poner un buen sonido, tenian que venir mucha gente para que suene bien y dijimos ‘vamos a ver que pasa’... Hemos hecho una mínima promocion de que algo esta por pasar y al final fue una autentica locura, era increíble como nos recibiéron y era justo lo que queriamos lograr. La estación estaba a reventar y el ambiente fue espectacular. ¿COMO ES TU DÍA PERFECTO? Levantarme tempranito sin ‘resaca’, hacer un poquito de deporte por la mañana y estar con mis niños y mi familia, comer bien y luego pasar el día en la playa con amigos, cenar bien y irme a la cama temprano. Por el ritmo que uno lleva con el tren que siempre esta en marcha es dificil tomar un tiempo libre y disfrutar de tu familia y tus amigos, asi que un día perfecto para mi es este.

¿SI TUVIERAS UNA VARITA MÁGICA PARA PODER CAMBIAR UNA COSA DE FORMA INSTANTANEA EN IBIZA, CUAL SERÍA? Dejaría un poquito mas de libertad acerca del espacio creativo, si uno quiere hacer una fiesta bonita por la mañana al salir de Vagabundos, Cocoon o lo que sea que lo pueda hacer en un espacio bonito con mucho verde, respetando el ambiente donde uno tiene la libertad de seguir con la fiesta en harmonia con la naturaleza. Sería ideal de poder hacerlo desde las ocho de la mañana hasta la tarde con el espiritu de Ibiza. ¿COMO VES ESTE AÑO EN QUE SE HABLA MUCHO DE LOS CAMBIOS QUE ESTAN POR VENIR HASTA COMO PREVENIR EL FIN DEL MUNDO? Es el comienzo de un siglo nuevo con una consciencia nueva, no es el fin, es todo lo contrario. No creo para nada en el fin del mundo, pero si siento que hay una energía fuerte en los ulti-

mos años. Para mi personalmente ha sido un tiempo muy positivo especialmente en el ultimo año. RALPH LAWSON IS ONE OF THE KEY FIGURES THAT SHAPED THE EARLY DAYS OF DANCE MUSIC AND OWNER OF ONE OF THE MOST RESPECTED ELECTRONIC MUSIC LABELS IN THE WORLD 2020VISION.

move away from the original sounds Lawson loved. So in 1991 it was time to do something different and back to basics was born with promoters Dave Beer & Alistair Cooke. Former punks, Beer & Cooke wanted to give people a different, more discerning experience from the increasingly cheesy raves. DJ Alistair Cooke played Nitzer Ebb, Cabaret Voltaire and Front 242, while Ralph continued to play the early house tracks flavoured with Balearic beats exported from the London DJs who came to guest at the club.

By choosing the name of his label you can see that his vision is crystal clear. 2020Vision was originally 20/20 vision, which is when you have perfect sight. Lawson wanted to create a perfect vision of music.

Asking him about the influence Ibiza had on him in those days Lawson says, ‚It was not as big as you might think, it was more the London DJs like Andrew Weatherall, Paul Oakenfold and Danny Rampling who brought it over. We didn’t go to Ibiza until 1992 and it was really disappointing! We were booked in Amnesia, the club was quite empty and the resident DJ gave us a hard time by taking away the monitors before we started to play. The same thing happened at Ku, which later became Privilege. We missed the first wave of Ibiza and by the time we got there the clubs were not good! We took our inspiration far more from the Hacienda in Manchester, but we mixed that with the emerging Leeds scene of bleep house and our influences of live bands and punk. I loved the purity of American House productions on Nu Groove, Big Shot, Trax and DJ International. But I had grown up with punk rock and loved the energy of live shows. I suppose this was a weird mix.‘

Ralph had already been exposed to house clubs in his hometown of London before he moved to Leeds. He arrived in Leeds in 1988 and sought out a house music scene there. Leeds was known as ‘Goth Capital’ in those days but there was one famous dance club called ‚The Warehouse‘. There he listened to the beats of Nightmares on Wax, who were originally George Evelyn and Kevin Harper. N.O.W mixed hip hop from Run DMC, Public Enemy and Big Daddy Kane with house music from Chicago. George was also playing early bleep house, mainly delivered by Warp Records. This was fresh, new and homegrown music from local bands. N.O.W had their own track ‘Dextrous’ out and label mates LFO busted their monster LFO ‚The Warehouse dub,’ long before it got really big, in the club. There were two rave organizations in Leeds called Joy and Kaos, celebrating events for up to 2000 people. Ralph became resident at Joy through passing the promoter mix tapes. But the raves increasingly saw the music become harder and faster and

The second wave Ibiza then hit him hard as people started to come back to the Island from 1998 onwards. The clubs were packed again and gained international recognition thanks to promoters such as Darren Hughes who created ‘Home’ - the Sunday party that today is We Love. Cocoon brought German techno to Amnesia in 1999 and Manumission filled Privilege with 10,000 people with their unique mix of stage performances and music. Lawson came back to Ibiza to play for Home in 1998. ‚The decks were on the bar, there was no DJ booth! Sundays were the focal point of the week on the Island and everyone was there. The sound system was actually pretty bad and had to be fairly low as it was all open air but it didn’t matter too much as the party was amazing.‘ Speaking about his own productions I have to ask him about the story behind one of my favourite tracks of all times, ‚Lovelee Dae‘ from Blaze. (While I write this I listen again to the mix and got goose bumps all over - amazing) ‚The guys from Playhouse were really into 2020Vision. Back in those days there were no emails so Ralph received a fax from Jörn and Roman Flügel (who later became Alter Ego) saying how much they loved the label. They had played a night at their first club ‘Wild Pitch’ in Frankfurt where they played 2020Vision records all night. It later became the legendary Robert Johnson club.‘ They asked him to do a remix for ‘Lovelee Dae’. They swapped with their own mix of Random Factor’s ‘Broken Mirror’. After the remix for ‘Lovelee Dae’ went so well 2020 did more remixes for Blaze ‚Wishing You Were Here‘, ‚Funky People‘ and ‚Fantasy‘. Another output from Ralph Lawson is the live project called 2020Soundsystem, which is on tour right now. 6.2

‚It started in 2003 from my desire to create a better live experience for dance music. Hardly anyone has managed to perform our music well and I feel it has really held back the scene. I hope we manage to prove you can play dance music with real musicians in clubs and festivals. We have live drums, bass, keys and DJ. I am privileged to play alongside such great players - it’s so humbling. At the moment our idea is to give people a present at the shows. So we made a live session and give the CDs away for free to the people at the gigs, making it an exclusive gift for people who are actually at the show. The latest festival was the Garden Festival in Croatia and the last club we played was Fabric in London.‘ You can catch 2020Soundsystem on August 4th at the Eastern Electrics Festival in London. They are also currently working on their first new material since 2009. They already have quite a few tracks but they need to feel it is fresh and substantial, and that takes time. Ralph Lawson is an ambassador of house music; he brought European influences into American house music and vice versa. ‚I always loved dub. I was really into Lee Scratch Perry, The Scientist and Mad Professor as a kid. The early US house records always had dubs on the B-side where they would lose the vocals or ‘dub them out’ with delays. I always played the B-sides rather than the A-sides - the stripped down dub versions are where some of the greatest moments in dance music happen.‘ HIS VISION OF A PERFECT DAY IN IBIZA? ‚Getting up early on Salinas beach and jumping into that amazing water, fresh fruit on the beach and a big pure Marijuana joint before playing a day party for all my favourite people in the world. Let’s catch our own fresh fish and cook it on the beach for 36

dinner. Take everyone to Space for a night session and head off to some crazy after party before going out to DC10 on my day off. I guess I cheated as that’s really two days isn’t it! Oh well that’s a day in Ibiza!‘ SOUNDS REALLY PERFECT. SO WHAT WILL HAPPEN ON DECEMBER 21ST 2012? ‚Well, it will be the shortest day of the year, the winter solstice, and for sure I won’t enjoy it. It’s the most depressing day of the year in England. I suppose you are asking about Mayan prophecies and predictions that it will be the end of the world? Well I am aware that we are on the edge of existence here but the world won’t end on that day! What does really piss me off is that people have no respect. When I see people going off the beach and leaving all the rubbish behind, which is washed into the sea - it drives me crazy. We need more understanding of the big picture, if every single one of us would take care of their own stuff we could make a big difference.‘ Expectations of 2020Visions are very high; Ralph always looks to support fresh new artists. On 2020 there are Huxley, PBR Streetgang and Joyce Muniz all coming. He also recently started a sub label called 2020 Midnight Visions with more leftfield, young producers like PhOtOmachine, Ossie and Behling & Simpson. The main change has been that the label now does it’s own parties. They recently held their first ever full terrace takeover in Ibiza at We Love Space but it’s the shows in London that have really taken off. Throwing real one-off underground parties in warehouses, on rooftops, disused train stations and in film studios.

AND YOU HAVE A LONG RUNNING SHOW ON IBIZA SONICA, TELL US ABOUT THAT. Yes I have been at Sonica since close to the start making the 2020Vision Mix. I think radio is massively important for the island. It has two well developed dedicated dance music stations. They inform people where to go but most importantly play the music you will hear in the clubs or in the beach bars. Sonica is also worldwide through their website. They have heavyweight artists on the air like Carl Cox, Giles Peterson and Digweed. I wish we had the station on the radio back home ! SO WHAT ABOUT THE FUTURE FOR IBIZA? ‚I truly love Ibiza so it does concern me to see the continual rise in prices. Do we really want to make the Island an exclusive playground for the rich? Are there even enough rich people to sustain that and surely it’s not just for them? It’s hard for normal people to attend parties when the entry and drinks are so expensive. I remember when the clubs were empty and that can happen again. Now you have Croatia offering a cheaper but increasingly fresh and exciting alternative for young people in the summer. Ibiza is in real danger of falling back into what happened back in the nineties and nobody wants that. So I wish that one of the big clubs would make a statement by lowering prices or creating a cheaper entry ticket for early birds perhaps? Surely everyone can still make plenty of money? How much do you actually need? In the long run I think it’s also a more sustainable model. It’s fine when you are at the top like Ibiza has been for over ten years now but people remember you forever if you look after them, they come back.‘ RALPH, WE THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR WORDS, WE CAN ONLY MORE THAN AGREE WITH THEM…

La elección del nombre de su sello ya lo dice todo, una visión clara como el agua. 2020Vision significa visión 20/20, que es cuando uno tiene una vista perfecta. Lawson quería crear una visión perfecta de música. Antes de mudarse a Leeds, Ralph ya estaba expuesto a los clubes de house en Londres, su ciudad natal. Una vez en Leeds, en el año 1988, buscó la escena de la música house. En aquellos tiempos, Leeds era conocido como la capital gótica, pero había un club famoso llamado “The Warehouse”. Allí escuchó la música de Nightmares on Wax, originalmente formado por George Evelyn y Kevin Harper. N.O.W. mezclaba el hip hop de Run DMC, Public Enemy y Big Daddy Kane con la música house de Chicago. George también pinchaba el Bleep House, la mayoría venía del sello Warp Records. Supongo que esto era una mezcla extraña. “ La segunda ola de Ibiza, a partir de 1998, vino fuerte y la gente regresaba a la isla. OTRA OBRA DE RALPH LAWSON ES EL PROYECTO EN VIVO LLAMADO 2020SOUNDSYSTEM, QUE EN ESTOS MOMENTOS ESTÁ DE GIRA. “Todo comenzó en el año 2003 con mi deseo de crear una mejor experiencia en vivo para la música de baile. Casi nadie ha conseguido llevar nuestra música a cabo y opino que ha sido frenado en la escena. Espero que logremos demostrar que la música de baile se puede tocar con músicos de verdad en clubs y festivales. Tenemos tambores en vivo, bajos, teclistas y un DJ. Tengo el privilegio de tocar junto a estos grandes artistas - es tan gratificante. De momento nuestra idea es dar un regalo a la gente. Así que hicimos una sesión en vivo para repartir los CDs gratuitamente al público, haciéndolo un regalo exclusivo para las personas que vienen a ver la actuación.” El último festival donde actuaron fue el “Garden Festival” en Croacia y el último club el “Fabric” de Londres. Podeis pillar la actuación de 2020Soundsystem el 4 de agosto en el “Eastern Electric Festival” de Londres. También están trabajando en temas nuevos por primera vez desde 2009. Ya tienen unos cuantos temas, pero ha de sentir fresco y sustancial y eso lleva tiempo. De niño me gustaba mucho Lee Scratch Perry, The Scientist y el Mad Professor. Los primeros discos del house estadounidense siempre tenían dub en la cara B donde quitaban las voces o las camuflaban con un dub con retrasos. Siempre he pinchado mas la cara B en vez de la cara A - las desnudas versiones dub son las que marcan los mejores momentos de la música de baile” SU VISIÓN DE UN DÍA PERFECTO EN IBIZA ES “Levantarme temprano en la playa de Salinas y tirarme a las increíbles aguas cristalinas, comer fruta fresca en la playa, fumar un buen porro de maría pura antes de ir a pinchar para mi gente en una fiesta diurna. Pescar nuestro propio pescado fresco y hacer la cena en la playa. Llevar toda la gente al Space para una sesión nocturna seguido por un after de locura antes de meterme en el DC10 en mi día libre. Creo que hice trampa ya que en realidad son dos días, verdad? Bueno, en Ibiza eso es un día! SUENA REALMENTE PERFECTO. Y QUE VA PASAR EL 21 DE DICIEMBRE DE 2012? “Bueno, será el día más corto del año, el solsticio de invierno, seguramente no será de mi agrado. En Inglaterra es el día más deprimente del año. Supongo que te refieres a las profecías 38

mayas y las predicciones de que será el fin del mundo? Bueno, estoy consciente de que estamos al borde de la existencia, pero el mundo no se acabará en un día! Lo que realmente me cabrea es que la gente no tiene ningún respeto. Cuando veo la gente yéndose de la playa dejando basura, que luego acaba en el mar - me vuelvo loco. Hemos de comprender la totalidad, si todos y cada uno de nosotros se ocupaba de sus propias cosas podríamos hacer una gran diferencia.“ Las expectativas de 2020Visions son muy altas; Ralph siempre está en búsqueda de apoyar nuevos artistas. En 2020 están Huxley, Streetgang PBR y Joyce Muniz, por venir. Hace poco que celebraron su primera adquisición de la siempre llena terraza de We Love en Space, pero los espectáculos de Londres, son los que han tenido mucho éxito, haciendo fiestas underground en lugares excepcionales como almacenes, áticos, estudios de cine y estaciones de tren que ya no están en uso. ¿TAMBIÉN TIENES UN SHOW DESDE HACE TIEMPO EN IBIZA SONICA, QUE NOS CUENTAS SOBRE ELLO? Sí, llevo con Ibiza Sonica casi desde el comienzo, haciendo el 2020Vision Mix. Creo que la radio, es muy importante para la isla. Cuenta con dos estaciones bien desarrolladas dedicadas a la música de baile. Traen información a la gente sobre dónde ir, pero lo más importante es que reproducen música que se puede escuchar tanto en las discotecas como en los bares y en la playa. Sonica también está disponible a nivel global gracias a su página web. Tienen los artistas de peso pesado en el aire como Carl Cox, Giles Peterson y Digweed. Como me gustaría tener esta estación en la radio en Inglaterra! ¿SOBRE EL FUTURO DE IBIZA? “Realmente amo Ibiza pero me preocupa el aumento continuo de los precios. Realmente queremos hacer de la isla una zona de juegos exclusivamente para los ricos? Hay realmente suficiente gente rica para sostener eso y está seguro que es sólo para ellos? Es difícil para los demás asistir a fiestas, cuando la entrada y las bebidas están muy caras. Me acuerdo de los tiempos que las discotecas estaban vacías y eso puede volver a ocurrir. Ahora esta Croacia que ofrece a precios más económicos, una alternativa cada vez más cool y divertida para los jóvenes durante el verano. Ibiza corre el gran peligro de caer en el mismo bache como en los años ´90 y eso no quiere nadie. Así que me gustaría que una de las grandes discotecas declarase la reducción de precios o la creación de un boleto de entradas más baratas para los que vienen temprano, tal vez? Seguramente que todo el mundo todavía puede hacer un montón de dinero. Cuánto se necesita realmente? A la larga creo que es un modelo más sostenible. Está bien cuando estas arriba como Ibiza durante más de diez años, pero la gente lo recordará siempre y si nos ocupamos de ellos, volverán”. FRANK WIEDEMANN AND KRISTIAN BEYER MET EACH OTHER IN A RECORDSHOP IN KARLSRUHE/GERMANY IN 1998 AS KRISTIAN WAS RUNNING IT AND FRANK WAS A REGULAR CUSTOMER. BOTH ARE NOT SURE WHO ASKED WHO TO WORK TOGETHER AND IT DOES NOT MATTER AT ALL, FACT IS WE OWE A MASSIVE THANKS TO THIS ENCOUNTER AS WHAT CAME OUT OF THIS MEETING IS NOTHING LESS THAN ONE OF THE GREATEST ACTS OF CONTEMPORARY HOUSE MUSIC, ÂME. ÂME IS SPOKEN ‘AAM’ AS IT COMES FROM THE FRENCH WORD FOR ‘SOUL’ - WHAT IS THAT DEFINES THEIR SOUND THE BEST. FRANK SAYS ‘THERE SHOULD ALWAYS BE SOUL IN YOUR MUSIC’, AND WE ARE NOT TALKING ABOUT SOUL MUSIC BUT SOULFUL MUSIC. ‘We put an eye on every detail in our songs, means we spend a lot of time on producing and honing our songs’ and by saying songs he means that as it is no tracks but rather real songs they produce. ‘We as well like to include a twist inside the song in order to not make it obvious so you can always expect the unexpected’ he adds. And they have to be compatible with the dancefloor. After living and producing many years in Karlsruhe they moved to Berlin as it is easier to get inspiration there meeting like-minded people, and the label Innervisions is based in Berlin as well, the brainchild of Dixon, their partner in crime. Together with Henrik Schwarz all four are the core of Innervisions, one of the most innovative and respected labels since many years. It was founded as a sublabel from Sonar Kollektiv but finally it made sense to establish it as an own brand as Sonar Kollektiv is very open to all sorts of music from Jazz to Downbeat and Drum n’ Bass what makes it difficult for a customer to follow. The name Innervisions was born out of a party series Dixon hosted called ‘Innercity’ and a Stevie Wonder album called ‘Innervisions’ - everybody has their inner visions but only a few make them come true. One of my favourite tracks from Âme together with Henrik Schwarz and Dixon is the track ‘Where we at’, one of the biggest club tracks of all times, originally released in 2006 but still played all over the globe. The track was originally produced by Dixon and Henrik with the voice of Derrick Carter but they somehow were stuck within the production so they asked Frank and Kristian to put hands on it and finally Derrick said they can use the vocal - history was written. Out of this track a long lasting relationship between all musicians was born. Asking him about his relation to Ibiza he says ‘To be honest I never was a big fan of the scene in Ibiza, that is why I only played about four times on the island, but since last year I discovered the island for myself and have to say it is a lot better than its reputation. I am still not ready for a whole season but who knows...’. You have to come in the off season Frank, our island is so much better than its reputation - and he agrees totally. Playing in We Love he met Jaime Fiorito, son of Alfredo and a very skilled DJ and producer himself and they both agreed on the fact that saying Ibiza was better in the old days is somehow anti6.2

quated as there is always a good moment in any time, he says ‘It is like going to the Panorama Bar in Berlin today and in 10 years people will remember it saying those days are over - there is always a good club in any time but everything changes and this is good’. Asking him about We Love he says ‘What I like about Mark and Sarah is the fact that they showcase a great diversity of music in their line-ups. The day I was booked it was Deetron playing on the main floor who I really enjoyed, as well Claude von Stroke that I met for the first time there and an outstanding live act from Aquarius Heaven playing a mix of house and R n’B music plus another DJ playing his own disco edits - there is a great diversity which marks the difference.

He as well works on new releases by Âme with Kristian, not only to bust the recent rumors of separation but to get another release out there. ‘We are still best friends and work on our future together as we always did. Our next release will be a remix from a track by Mario & Vidis from Lithuania and there is lots more to come.’ YOU JUST SAID IT - NEVER CHANGE A WINNING TEAM!

One question i really like to ask is about the perfect day as it shows how much an artist is into his work or not. ‘After a very good sleep, as I like to sleep long at the moment, I take a long shower and have a good breakfast as I need hours to really wake up, then read the newspapers and do some necessary office work to finally get to the studio to do some music until the end of the day, then seeing my girlfriend and having a nice evening. I loose myself completely in producing music, it gives me total satisfaction without the need to always have a high output, the mere fact of making music is enough for me. I am a lazy guy but still need to do something.’ Asking him about the recent discussion about the German Gema Association, which is the Author’s community that takes care of the royalties being paid to the Artist from wherever their music is played publicly, he says ‘I am a member of the Gema and it should be a good thing for me getting more money back from my tracks played out there, the problem is all the money goes to the big fish as we all should be sending in our playlists every week to show how often our tracks are played but we don’t do it as all musicians tend to be lazy when it comes to bureaucratic work. So all the money goes to artists like Herbert Grönemeyer who is not being played in clubs like the Berghain but they have to pay for it which is not right. If that money would come back to the artists then we could play for less money knowing we get our part from the Gema - but unfortunately it does not work like that. The money they make should be invested in a system to automatically track down all the music and develop a fair pay system for all musicians. Let’s Shazam the clubs!’ Asking him about artists he would love to work with he mentions Peter Gabriel and Brian Eno as he could learn a lot from their experience. Currently he is working with a singer/songwriter from Los Angeles called ‘Ry’ on a solo project, opening his horizon to combine House and Pop music without any blinders. Labelwise he says he is very happy with Innervisions, Âme released all their tracks there except one on Ostgut Ton. ‘Why releasing on different labels if you are happy with your own one? Never change a winning team.’ One of his current project includes writing the music for a Ballet, he did this before but it consisted in making music that was later integrated in the Ballet so this time it all works hand in hand with the choreographer and stage designer. He does this together with Marcel Dettmann who became a close friend as he respects him a lot as artist and person. There is still no name for it so we will have to watch out in the near future.

Âme se pronuncia como ‘Aam’, y proviene de la palabra “alma” en francés – lo que define su sonido. Frank dice: “el alma tiene que existir siempre en la música y no estamos hablando de la música ´soul´, pero de la música que viene del alma. “Miramos cada detalle en nuestras canciones y pasamos mucho tiempo produciendo y perfeccionando nuestras canciones”, y

diciendo canciones se refiere a canciones y no a temas musicales. “También nos gusta incluir un giro inesperado en la canción con el fin de que no suene obvio así que siempre pueden esperar lo inesperado de nosotros.”. Además tienen que ser compatibles con la pista de baile. Después de muchos años viviendo y produciendo en Karlsruhe se trasladaron a Berlín, ya que es más fácil encontrar la inspiración entre personas de ideas afines y también porque el sello Innervisions tiene sede en Berlín, el inventor de Dixon, su cómplice. Junto con Henrik Schwarz los cuatro son el núcleo de Innervisions, uno de los sellos más innovador e respetado desde hace muchos años. Fue fundado como un subsello de Sonar Kollektiv pero finalmente tenía sentido establecerlo como una marca propia como Sonar Kollektiv, muy abierto a todo tipo de música desde Jazz a Downbeat hasta Drum n´ Bass, haciéndolo difícil seguir como de costumbre. El nombre Innervisions nació de una serie de fiestas de Dixon con el nombre ‘Innercity´ y el álbum de Stevie Wonder llamado ‘Innervisions’- todo el mundo tiene sus visiones internas, pero sólo unos pocos lo realizan. Una de mis canciones favoritas de Âme y Dixon, junto con Henrik Schwarz es ‘Where we at’, una gran cancion de todos los tiempos, lanzado originalmente en 2006 que aun sigue sonando en todo el mundo. Originalmente la canción fue producida por Dixon y Henrik, con la voz de Derrick Carter. De alguna manera se quedaron pillados durante la producción y pidieron a Frank y Kristian que les echen una mano. Por último, Derrick dijo de usar su voz – y así escribieron historia. A partir de esta canción se desarrolló un vínculo duradero entre estos músicos. Preguntándole sobre su relación con Ibiza, dice “Para ser te sincero, nunca fui un gran fan del escenario en Ibiza, por esta misma razón he pinchado solo cuatro veces en la isla pero el año pasado descubrí la isla por mí propio pie y he de decir que la isla está mejor que la reputación que tiene. Aun no estoy listo para una temporada entera, pero nunca se sabe... “. Frank, tienes que venir fuera de la temporada de invierno. Nuestra isla está mucho mejor que la reputación que tiene - y con esto estaba totalmente de acuerdo. Pinchando en ´We Love´ conoció a Jaime Fiorito, hijo de Alfredo y un hábil DJ e productor. Los dos estaban de acuerdo sobre la anticuada costumbre de decir que Ibiza era mejor en los viejos tiempos, ya que siempre hay un buen momento sea cuando sea. A lo que añade: “Es como ir ahora al Bar Panorama en Berlín y en 10 años la gente lo recordará diciendo que estos tiempos no volverán - siempre hay un buen club en su momento, pero todo cambia y eso es bueno”. Preguntándole sobre “We Love” me dice: “ Lo que me gusta de Mark y Sarah es que ofrecen una gran diversidad de géneros de música en sus carteles. El día que me invitaron a pinchar estaba Deetron pinchando en la sala principal, cosa que me gustó mucho, así también Claude von Stroke a quien conocí por primera vez y una destacada actuación en directo de Aquarius Heaven, con una mezcla de house y R n’B con otro DJ pinchando sus ediciones de la música disco - existe una gran diversidad que marca la diferencia.

El problema está en que todo el dinero esta cobrado por los peces grandes y todos deberíamos enviar semanalmente las listas de reproducción para que se demuestren las veces que se reproducen nuestros temas, pero no lo hacemos ya que la mayoría de los artistas tienden a ser perezosos a la hora de hacer trabajos burocráticos. Así que todo el dinero va a artistas como Herbert Grönemeyer cuyos temas no se reproducen en clubes como el Berghain y tienen que pagar por ello que no me parece correcto. Si ese dinero recompensaba los artistas, podríamos actuar por menos dinero sabiendo que obtendríamos nuestra parte de la Gema -, pero por desgracia no funciona así. El dinero que se hace debe ser invertido en un sistema de seguimiento automático que detecta toda la música y el desarrollo de un sistema de remuneración justa para todos los músicos. Vamos a embrujar los clubes! Preguntando por artistas con quienes le encantaría trabajar, menciona Peter Gabriel y Brian Eno ya que podría aprender mucho de sellos. Actualmente está con un compositor/ cantante de Los Angeles llamada “Ry” en un proyecto solitario, abriendo su horizonte de combinar House y Pop sin prejuicio. Con respecto al sello me dice que está muy contento con Innervisions, Ame lanzo todos sus temas bajo el sello, salvo uno en Ostgut Ton. “Porqué lanzar bajo otro sello si estáis contentos con vuestro propio sello? Nunca cambies un equipo ganador! “ Uno de sus proyectos actuales incluye escribir la música para un ballet, cosa que ya hizo antes, pero consistía en hacer la música que más tarde fue integrada en el ballet y esta vez trabaja mano a mano con el coreógrafo y escenógrafo. Lo hace junto a Marcel Dettmann que se convirtió en un amigo cercano hacia quien guarda un gran respeto como artista y como persona. Todavía no tiene nombre así que tendremos que estar al loro en el próximo futuro. También está trabajando con Kristian en nuevas producciones para Âme, no sólo para acabar con los recientes rumores de separación, pero para lanzar otra producción. “Todavía somos muy amigos y trabajamos juntos en nuestro futuro como hemos hecho siempre. Nuestro próximo lanzamiento será un remix de una canción de Mario y Vidis de Lituania y está mucho más por venir. “

REPORT FROM THE COALFACE: GETTING THE BIG OM ORGANIZED – BAREFOOT DOCTOR: On the way back from The Secret Garden Party just now, where I’d gone for a brief discussion with someone, after a week of many brief discussions with many people in unlikely venues, all associated with organizing THE BIG OM at Wembley Arena, London on 12.12.12, I stopped off at a friend’s place to wash the mud off me and have a cup of tea. Her house is next to an old church and as we sat to talk, they started doing their bell-ringing practice next door, making it hard to hear each other, so I suggested rather than talk, we chant OM in tune with the bells, which we duly did for the whole hour they were ringing. And it was beautiful: the harmonics in the two voices, male and female, underscored by the harmonics in the arpeggios ringing out from the bells, generated a sonic synergy, that sounded like a thousand angels chanting and took us both temporarily out of the mundane into a different dimension altogether, stilled the racing thoughts, cleared out the psychic cobwebs and left us each feeling cleansed and ready for life to reset itself and start anew. As you know, the universe is primarily built on a sound wave fifty octaves below human hearing levels – modern physicists call it the background radiation wave, ancient yogis and assorted Eastern mystics, the sacred OM (or AUM). By chanting it repeatedly, especially when doing so with one or more people, you elicit awareness deep in the subconscious stratum of your mind, of the actual, otherwise inaudible sound of creation itself. Doing so you align yourself with the creative thrust of existence, and thereby trigger healing, not just for yourself but, at the subtlest level, for everyone via the collective unconscious. So imagine 12,000 people doing it together for an hour, all miked up, the sound brought back through the system, sub-bass accentuated, and the entire sound wave amplified, underscored by subtle electronic arpeggios and pulses. That’s the proposed cre56

scendo for THE BIG OM on 12.12.12, rising up from four preceding hours of some of the best electronic music in the world, a sonic under-swell provided by Basement Jaxx playing with sonic healing frequencies, Nightmares on Wax, who’ve made a track called Om Sweet Om, Hofer66, Golly, Benji Vaughn, and many others, including one or two monster acts still to be confirmed, along with spoken word interludes by Howard Marks (Mr. Nice), Jamie Catto (One Giant Leap), John Parkin (F*ck It), Amanda Louise Evelyn (higher self hypnosis), and me, leading the audience in a deep shamanic trance, with tai chi masters, Buddhist monks, free-runners, street dancers, and a bath of light and color, and you start to get the picture of how it’ll be: a happening the likes of which probably hasn’t been seen since Woodstock – and no mud. You also start to get a sense of the trip I’m on getting it all organized, making it a miracle, for instance, that I’m able to sit and focus enough to write this piece in between phone-calls and meetings – and challenging as it is, I’m loving every minute, because I know the result will be one of the utmost sublime joy for everyone there, those joining in on the live-streaming, and eventually everyone on the planet as the healing effects of the sound wave radiate out from Wembley Arena to the world. With my hand, momentarily removed from the keyboard here, now on my heart I can sincerely say this is a happening not to be missed (certainly not for me), and I’d love you to be there too. My intuition is that this will contribute significantly to ushering in a new golden era for humanity, but just in case it really is the end of the world on 21.12.12, at least we’ll have had one hell of a party to celebrate our existence. A la vuelta del “Secret Garden Party”, donde fui a reunirme con alguien y tras una semana de muchas breves reuniones con varias personas en lugares poco probables, todas asociadas con la organización del BIG OM el dia 12.12.12 en el Wembley Arena de Londres, pasé por la casa de una amiga para quitar el barro que llevaba encima y tomar una taza de té. Su casa está al lado de una antigua iglesia y cuando nos sentamos a hablar, empezaron a ensayar con las campanas, haciéndolo difícil entendernos, asi que he sugerido de cantar el OM en sintonía con las campanas en vez de hablar. Asi seguimos durante una hora hasta que las campanas dejaron de sonar. Era hermoso: la armónia de las dos voces, masculina y femenina, destacadas por los armónicos sonidos de los arpegios de las campanas, generando una sinergia sonora, que sonaba como un millar de ángeles cantando. Nos sacó temporalmente de lo mundano a una dimensión totalmente diferente, calmando los pensamientos de carrera, limpiando las telarañas psíquicas dejándonos limpios y preparados para ponernos a cero y comenzar de nuevo. Como ya sabeis, el universo está principalmente basado en una onda de sonido a unos cincuenta octavos debajo de los niveles auditivos del ser humano - los físicos modernos lo llaman la onda de la radiación del fondo. Los antiguos yoguis y místicos orientales, lo llaman el sagrado OM (o AUM). Cantándolo repetitivamente, especialmente en un dúo o con más personas, se provoca una conciencia profunda en el subconsciente estrato de la mente, del actual e normalmente inaudible sonido de la mismísima creación. Practicándolo, uno se alinea con el impulso creativo de la existencia, y con ello activa la curación, no sólo para uno mismo, sino a un nivel más sutil y es para todos vía la inconsciencia colectiva. Así que imagínense un conjunto de 12.000 personas haciéndolo mismo durante una hora, todos con micrófono, pasando el sonido por el equipo, sub-bajos acentuados y una amplificación de toda la onda de sonido, subrayada por arpegios sutiles y pulsos electrónicos. Esa es la propuesta del crescendo para el BIG OM del 12/12/12, seguida por cuatro horas de la mejor música electrónica del mundo, una oleada sónica de Basement Jaxx tocando frecuencias de sanación sónica, Nightmares on Wax, que hicieron una canción llamada “Om Sweet Om”, Hofer66, Caramba, Benji Vaughn, y muchos mas, incluyendo una o dos actuaciones de escandalo que aún están por confirmar. Mi intuición es que contribuirá significativamente al alumbramiento de una nueva era dorada para la Humanidad, pero en el caso que realmente sea el fin del mundo el 21.12.12, por lo menos lo hemos celebrado con un pedazo de fiesta celebrando nuestra existencia. IT HAS BEEN QUITE A TIME SINCE WE DID THE FIRST INTERVIEW WITH YOU GUYS (WE WERE ONE OF THE VERY FIRST ONES) AND THE LABEL AS WELL AS THE ARTISTS HAVE GAINED MASSIVE GLOBAL RESPECT. DID YOU EXPECT SUCH HUGE SUCCESS? When we founded the labe almost 6 years ago, I think nobody of us expected that we will be in the position we are today. I feel very flattered that our music gains so much recognition. We always did what we love and being so successful with it is just amazing. On top we all became really good friends over the years and it’s a gift to work together with such excellent artists. ACTUALLY THE DIYNAMIC FAMILY HAS GROWN, YOU ADDED A SUBLABEL CALLED 2DIY4, RUN A CLUB CALLED EGO IN HAMBURG AND HOST SEVERAL RADIOSHOWS. TELL US MORE ABOUT YOUR PROJECTS. This is basically it, after Diynamic’s huge success my label parter Adriano and me wanted to create a platform on which we can experiment and release music which would not fit on the Diynamic outright. So we created 2DIY4 to do exactly that. EGO as well is running great and, without paying attention to the fact that it is my club, it’s also one of my favourite places to play. WINSTON CHURCHILL SAID ONCE: “THE DAY YOU FIND A JOB YOU REALLY LIKE IS THE LAST DAY YOU EVER WORKED.” IS THIS THE FORMULA TO DEAL WITH ALL THIS? Under certain conditions, yes. I love my job and i’m very thankful about it and everything that comes along with it, but sometimes it gets very difficult to acommodate all those things. THIS SUMMER YOU HAVE YOUR FIRST REGULAR LABELNIGHT IN IBIZA, IN THE SANKEYS CLUB IN PLAYA D’EN BOSSA. WHAT CAN CLUBBERS EXPECT? Yes, it’s our first time on the island with our label and for most of our artists as well. We had two great nights so far. I’m super happy! A packed club, an enthusiastic atmosphere and a lovely crowd. Following our neon night concept we have pans of neon colour at the night and the crowd are super into it, it is big fun because they always ask for more colour paint during the night and they all paint themselves and others - this all gives it a familiar vibe. WHAT ARE YOUR FAVOURITE SPOTS ON THE ISLAND? WHERE CAN PEOPLE FIND YOU IF NOT IN SANKEYS? I definitely hang out alot on the beach, for me it is very important to calm down after the exhausting nights we have in Sankeys. FUTURE PROJECTS? We are releasing a charity compilation, all of the benefits will be donated to Kinderhospiz Sternenbrücke (a clinic for children). It is a double CD, on the first part we worked together will incredible artists coming from different genres doing remixes of older dynamic tracks, on the second part you will find new tracks from all our Diynamic artists. Besides that i finished my first Mix Compilation which i did for the Watergate Series. 6.2

HOW DOES YOUR PERFECT DAY LOOK LIKE? There are two kinds of a perfect day for me. One is a great club evening and the other one is a relaxed day at home, eating, watching tv and going to bed early. WHAT IS HAPPENING ON THE 21ST OF DECEMBER 2012? Nothing, three days after is Christmas followed by my birthday another three days later - hopefully... WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT DUB IBIZA? I think you do very nice interviews with very nice guys.

Cuando fundamos el sello hace casi 6 años, creo que nadie de nosotros esperaba estar en la posición en la que estamos ahora. Me siento muy halagado de que nuestra música ha ganado tanto reconocimiento. Siempre hemos hecho lo que nos gusta y tener tanto exito con ello es simplemente increíble. Aparte de ello nos hicimos muy buenos amigos en los últimos años y es un regalo trabajar en conjunto de excelentes artistas. ACTUALMENTE LA FAMILIA DIYNAMIC HA CRECIDO, AÑADISTE UN SUBSELLO LLAMADO 2DIY4, LLEVAS VARIOS PROGRAMAS DE RADIO Y UN CLUB EN HAMBURGO LLAMADO EGO. CUÉNTANOS MÁS SOBRE TUS PROYECTOS. Esto es básicamente todo. Después del enorme exito del sello Diynamic mi socio Adriano y yo queríamos crear una plataforma para poder experimentar con música que no encajaba con el estilo de Diynamic. Así que creamos 2DIY4 para hacer justo eso. EGO también está funcionando muy bien y sin darle mucha importancia que es mi club, también es uno de mis lugares favoritos para pinchar. Sí, es nuestra primera vez en la isla con nuestro sello y para la mayoría de nuestros artistas también. Hasta ahora hemos tenido dos noches de gran exito. Estoy super feliz! Un club lleno, un ambiente encantador y un publico animado. Siguiendo con nuestro concepto de noche de neón. Tenemos pintura de neón y la gente la flipan con ello. Es muy divertido porque siempre me piden mas pintura durante la noche y pintan a sí mismos y a los demás - todo esto le da un rollo familiar. ¿CUÁLES SON TUS LUGARES FAVORITOS EN LA ISLA? ¿DÓNDE TE PODEMOS ENCONTRAR SI NO EN EL SANKEYS? Sin duda paso mucho rato en la playa, es muy importante para mí. Asi me relajo de las noches agotadoras que tenemos en Sankeys. ¿FUTUROS PROYECTOS? Estamos lanzando una compilación de caridad, todos los beneficios serán donados a Kinderhospiz Sternenbrücke (una clínica para niños). Se trata de un doble CD. En la primera parte trabajamos junto a artistas increíbles de diferentes géneros haciendo remixes de temas dinámicas del pasado. En la segunda parte estan temas nuevos de todos los artistas de Diynamic. Además acabo de terminar mi primer mix de compilación para Watergate Series. ¿CÓMO ES TU DÍA PERFECTO? Para mi, hay dos clases de un día perfecto. Seria una noche loca en club y el otro un día relajado en casa, comiendo, viendo la televisión acostandome temprano. ¿QUÉ ESTÁ PASANDO EN EL 21 DE DICIEMBRE DE 2012? IT WAS ALWAYS MY BIG WISH TO GET TO INTERVIEW JOSH WINK, A LEGEND BEHIND THE DECKS AND OWNER OF ONE OF THE MOST RESPECTED LABELS OF ALL TIMES, OVUM RECORDS. YOU JUST BECAME A FATHER, HOW DOES THAT CHANGE YOUR LIFE AS JOSH WINK? Our son was born in October and it is a truly unique experience, not made for everybody that is for sure. It is amazing how much you can and have to learn from your children, before I was Josh - now I am Daddy. When i come home for example, I only have a few days before I have to leave again, and now there is my family waiting. Before I could take my time and do the things I wanted to do but now this all has changed - and for good. My girlfriend is doing the whole job when I am on the road so when I am back it is up to me to give her a break. The good thing is you have to set your priorities straight, get the most out of the time you are given and that is always a good thing. In regards to making music, I thought i would be really inspired and create this opus piece of music after my son was born, actually I feel very creative now, but simply do not have the time to go to the studio and work. So for me the biggest challenge right now is to find out how to balance who I am, either being Josh Wink, Josh or Daddy. YOU SEEM TO BE HAVING YOUR ROOTS IN PHILADELPHIA, ARE YOU A TRADITIONAL MAN? My father still lives in Philadelphia, my mother lives in Florida and we are lucky enough to have them on board as grandparents but I can also think of moving - some of the biggest artists retired in Europe, may it be Italy or somewhere in Spain, I do like the spanish way of living so this could become an option. MAYBE EVEN IBIZA? I get to be here in the summer time quite a lot. Right now I am speaking to you from an Ibizan house that my friends live in all year. The basic problem in Ibiza is the transportation, there are not enough flights - it got better than before but still this is the main reason why it would be difficult to live here when you have to travel a lot. What I like about the island is that the right people find each other sooner or later, and not necessarily in the clubs and trendy restaurants but rather somewhere in the countryside through friends. YOU ARE SUCH A PERFECTIONIST, DO ALL THE COMMENTS ON YOUR RADIOSHOWS BY YOURSELF AND ALWAYS GIVE IT 110% - HOW DO YOU FIND TIME TO DO ALL THAT? Luckily there are airplanes. It is a weird combination because I hate flying, the whole travelling thing is very exhausting but it gives me the time to do things I could not do at any other time. When I prepare my mixes for the radioshows there are the voiceovers to do, as they go out to different radio stations around the world - one is the Sirius radioshow in America where lots of my colleagues have shows as well (Adam Beyer, Carl Cox and John Digweed etc.) so I have to listen to all the dj mixes I record, and do it the best job I can, I like to present my own music or the ones being released on Ovum, animate the people to go to my website and all this stuff, I guess it is important to be present and share the most with your fans. 6.2

SO YOU DO ALL THE SOCIAL NETWORKING BY YOURSELF TOO? Actually I got told that my social networking is not enough so we found a company in philadelphia to help with it, they know us and the label and our philosophy. The tweets and the instagram I still do by myself. You could call me an oldschool guy who loves to do it all by myself but obviously this is impossible today so it is time to open up to certain people to cover all the needs of modern communication. WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO SOMEBODY JUST STARTING THAT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING TO BE SUCCESSFUL - OBVIOUSLY IT IS ALL ABOUT MUSIC. Not necessarily, some people can become successful by having a team being brilliant in social media and if you have good looks and are an attractive man or woman you can become top ten or top 100 in, let’s say DJ Magazine without even having a release and all of a sudden you headline big festivals. This is somehow the beauty and the curse of the internet. It can open up a lot of doors including the ones that are made to steal your stuff right off the net. For the most part it is all about music and passion, myself I can say that I was born and raised wanting to live it, eat it, see it, feel it and be it 24/7, that is the only thing I know. On the one hand I am a renaissance man and one that is familiar with the changing times, not being the old dinosaur that cannot change. The most important is to embrace a bit of everything, not letting you be taken away by the current stream so you can help control your journey, not vice versa. For some people it is all about the limousines, the five star hotels, being on the cover of big magazines, the blowjobs, cocaine etc. etc., everybody shall be happy with what he is doing and for any reason, for me it is all about music. THAT IS WHAT MAKES YOU JOSH WINK. TELL US ABOUT OVUM, YOUR LABEL. Having a label is a labour of love for so many years, a lot of what i get paid being on the road goes into Ovum, in fact without all that i could not run Ovum, despite that people think we do really really well I can say if you keep your integrity and follow what the music is in your heart and not trends it does not make it the easiest to run a business. but at the end of the day you feel good about yourself because you stay true instead of signing the hot hip new things only to sell records. I only sign records that I would play or really like to hear. So we constantly release music as from unknown artists to well known artists. It is a unique position to be able to choose the people you like to release on Ovum, the only thing I miss is to do more of my own music and release it there... To name a few I can say we got Dirty Channels coming and Bugsy with remixes from Dave Pezzner and myself, there is new stuff from italian Nico Lahs, a Technasia single, another one from Tom Middleton, there is a wide range of releases from Deep House over Tech House to Techno, some Minimal, stuff I am really looking forward to. THERE ARE A LOT OF AMERICANS COMING LATELY, PROMOTERS COME TO HAVE AN EYE ON IBIZA, HOW CAN YOU COMPARE THE BOTH - OR NOT? Nothing ever compares with the lifestyle over here in Ibiza. What is now known as EDM - Electronic Dance Music - has become the pop music in America, several years ago Rn’B music stopped and for some weird reason it blended in with dance music. Usher 72

started making dance records, David Guetta is working with Akon and Kelly Rowland, Justin Bieber is making Dubstep, someone like Skrillex is up in front. Besides the eternal discussion if EDM is real Dance Music or not, it is what it is, every kind of art serves its purpose. So it is kind of very cool right now in America but it is not my kind of music, years before it was the big Trance guys playing the stadiums, now it is this kind of Pop Dance Music. It helps to raise the awareness that there is Electronic Dance Music out there, if let’s say somebody gets to listen to David Guetta on Sirius Radio then he can listen in the hour after David someone like me and had no idea before who I am. It is like in the movie the Matrix, you take the blue pill or the red pill, how deep do you wanna go, is this enough for you or do you want to know more about it? Get to know that Tiesto used to sell Techno Records in a records shop in Holland or get to know the name of Jeff Mills because his records were sold there and so on. I have a lot of hope that people will educate themselves a little bit further and want a little bit more. LAST ONE, WHAT ABOUT 2012 - WHAT DO YOU SEE HAPPENING? It is funny, all of these years I wanted to have a kid and now I got one the year the world is supposed to end, 2012... Maybe the Mayans are playing a practical joke on us... One thing is for sure, the planet is a living organism, sometimes an organism has to die to regrow. Aspects of human life have made our quality of life the way it is, basically through Corporate America or, better said, the big Corporations of America, it is all about greed and the bottom line rather than about people and souls. The planet is changing so much, we had no real winter in Philadelphia, right now it is about 44 degrees, environmentally something will definitely happen. What is different as well is all the media we got on demand telling us 24/7 what is happening when and where - it used to be different before. We may have a hard learning to come, if we do not get it through intelligence we might have to learn it through catastrophes. One example - I dedicate part of my money to an organization in Africa that simply helps children to have access to clean drinking water through simple filter straw that you wear around your neck helping them to filter the water in order to not get sick of it. As long as those problems are so big we definitely have to learn a lot. WHERE CAN PEOPLE LISTEN TO YOU IN IBIZA THIS YEAR? After having played Music On with Marco Carola on the 13th of July I will be playing with Carl Cox in Space on the 29th of July and two times with Ritchie Hawtin, August 9th and September 6th. TE ACABAS DE CONVERTIR EN PADRE, CÓMO CAMBIA ESO LA VIDA DE JOSH WINK? Nuestro hijo nació en octubre y es una experiencia realmente única, no es para todo el mundo, eso es seguro. Es increíble cuanto se puede y tiene que aprender de los hijos. Antes, yo era Josh - ahora soy papá. Por ejemplo, cuando llego a casa, sólo tengo unos cuantos días antes de mi próximo viaje y ahora está mi familia que me espera. Antes podía tomar mi tiempo y hacer las cosas que quería hacer pero ahora todo esto ha cambiado - para siempre y para lo mejor. Mi novia hace todo el trabajo cuando yo estoy de viaje así que a la vuelta me toca a mi darle un descanso. Lo bueno es que hay que establecer prioridades, sacar el máximo provecho del tiempo que siempre es una cosa buena. Con respecto a hacer música, pensé que estaría muy inspirado para crear esta gran pieza de música tras el nacimiento de mi hijo. En realidad, ahora me siento muy creativo pero simplemente no tengo el tiempo para ir al estudio a trabajar. Así que para mí el mayor desafío ahora es encontrar la manera de equilibrar lo que soy, ya sea Josh Wink, Josh o papá. POR LO VISTO TIENES LOS RAÍCES EN FILADELFIA, ERES UN HOMBRE TRADICIONAL? Mi padre aún vive en Filadelfia, mi madre vive en Florida y tenemos la suerte de contar con ellos como los abuelos, pero también puedo pensar en trasladarme – unos cuantos gran artistas se retiran en Europa. Puede ser Italia o en algún lugar de España. Me gusta la forma de vivir en España, así que puede ser una opción. TAL VEZ INCLUSO IBIZA? Paso mucho tiempo por aquí durante la temporada de verano. Ahora mismo estoy hablando contigo en una casa ibicenca donde mis amigos viven todo el año. Cuando preparo mis mixes para la radio he de hacer las voces sobre la banda, ya que salgo en diferentes estaciones de radio en todo el mundo - uno es el show en Radio Sirius en Estados Unidos, donde muchos de mis colegas tienen programas (Adam Beyer, Carl Cox y John Digweed, etc.), así que hay que escuchar a todos los dj mixes grabados y hacer el mejor trabajo posible. 6.2

ASÍ QUE, TODO RELACIONADO CON LAS REDES SOCIALES, HACES POR TI MISMO TAMBIÉN? Sinceramente, me dijeron que mi red social no es suficiente así que encontramos una empresa en Filadelfia para darnos soporte, que ya conocen nuestro sello y nuestra filosofía. Los tweets y el Instagram sigo haciendo yo mismo. Podrías llamarme un hombre de la vieja escuela que le gusta hacerlo todo por su cuenta, pero obviamente, hoy en día esto es imposible por lo que ha llegado el momento de abrirse hacia determinadas personas para cubrir todos los criterios de la comunicación moderna. Qué le dirías a alguien que acaba de empezar, que es lo más importante para tener éxito – evidentemente que todo tiene que ver con la música. No necesariamente, algunos pueden tener éxito gracias al respaldo de un gran equipo en los medios sociales y si tienen buen aspecto, un atractivo hombre o mujer pueden llegar a ser Top 10 o Top 100, digamos en el DJ Magazine. Incluso sin haber sacado un disco de repente pueden aparecer en los carteles de fiestas grandes. De alguna manera esto es la belleza y la maldición de Internet. Se pueden abrir muchas puertas, incluso las que están hechas para robar tus cositas de la red. Mayoritariamente todo tiene que ver con la música y la pasión. Puedo decir que he nacido y crecido con las ganas de vivirlo, comerlo, verlo, sentirlo y serlo 24/7, eso es la única cosa que sé. Por un lado soy el hombre de renacimiento que está consciente de los tiempos cambiantes, no soy el viejo dinosaurio que no puede cambiar. Lo más importante es abrazar un poco de todo, no dejarse llevar por la actual corriente para facilitar el control de tu viaje, no vice versa. Para algunas personas es todo limusinas, hoteles de cinco estrellas, estar en la portada de grandes revistas, las mamadas, cocaína, etc., etc. Todo el mundo estará contento con lo que está haciendo y por cualquier motivo, para mí se trata de música. Eso es lo que te hace Josh Wink. Háblanos de Ovum, tu sello. Tener un sello es una labor de amor de muchos años. Mucho de lo que me pagan por estar de viaje entra en Ovum. En realidad, sin esto no podría llevar Ovum, a pesar de que la gente piensa que vamos muy bien he de decir que si uno mantiene la integridad siguiendo la música en su corazón y no las tendencias no lo hace fácil llevar un negocio pero al final del día te sientes bien contigo mismo por haber permanecido fiel en lo que crees en lugar de firmar las cosas nuevas de cadera caliente para vender discos sólo. Solamente firmo discos que pincharía o que me gustan escuchar. Así que continuamente lanzamos música tanto de artistas desconocidos como de artistas de renombre. Es una posición única de elegir a las personas que te gustan para lanzar en el Ovum, lo único que echo de menos es hacer más de mi música y lanzarlo allí ... Para nombrar unos pocos puedo decir que tenemos los Dirty Channels y Bugsy con remixes de Dave Pezzner y yo, hay cosas nuevas del italiano Nico Lahs, un single de Technasia, otro de Tom Middleton. Hay una amplia gama de versiones de Deep House a Tech House hasta el Techno y un poco de Minimal, que realmente tengo ganas de sacar. 74

HAY MUCHOS ESTADOUNIDENSES QUE VIENEN ÚLTIMAMENTE. LOS PROMOTORES LLEGAN A FIJARSE EN IBIZA, SE PUEDEN COMPARAR LOS DOS - O NO? Nada se compara con el estilo de vida aquí en Ibiza. Lo que ahora se conoce como EDM - Música Electrónica de baile - se ha convertido en la música pop en Estados Unidos, hace varios años la música R n’B se paró por alguna extraña razón y se mezcló con la música de baile. Usher comenzó a hacer discos de baile, David Guetta está trabajando con Akon y Kelly Rowland, Justin Bieber está haciendo Dubstep, alguien como Skrillex está en la frente. Aparte está la eterna discusión si EDM es realmente música de baile o no, es lo que es, todo tipo de arte sirve a su propósito. Por lo tanto, de momento es un movimiento muy cool en America, pero no es mi tipo de música. Años atrás eran los grandes chicos Trance que pinchaban en los estadios, ahora es este tipo de música, el Pop Dance. Ayuda a elevar la conciencia de que hay música electrónica de baile por ahí, digamos que alguien se pone a escuchar a David Guetta en Radio Sirius y una hora después a alguien como yo sin tener la mínima idea quien soy. Es como en la película “The Matrix”, te tomas la píldora azul o la píldora roja, hasta que profundidad quieres ir.? Es suficiente para ti o quieres saber más? Piensa que Tiesto vendía discos de Techno en una tienda de discos en Holanda y conoció el nombre de Jeff Mills, porque sus discos se venden allí y así sucesivamente. Tengo mucha esperanza de que las personas se eduquen un poquito más y quieran un poco más. EL ÚLTIMO, QUÉ HAY DE 2012 - QUÉ ES LO QUE PASARÁ? Es curioso, todos estos años quería tener un hijo y ahora lo tengo en el año 2012 donde se supone que el mundo se termina... Tal vez los mayas nos están jugando una broma... Una cosa es segura, el planeta es un organismo vivo y un organismo tiene que morir para renacer. Aspectos de la vida humana han hecho nuestra calidad de vida tal y como la conocemos, básicamente a través de la América Corporativa, o mejor dicho, las grandes corporaciones de Estados Unidos, que en el fondo tiene que ver con la codicia y no con las personas y almas. El planeta está cambiando mucho, en Filadelfia no hemos tenido un de invierno real. En estos momentos estamos a unos 44 grados. Definitivamente algo que va a suceder con el medio ambiente. Lo que también cambió es que los medios de comunicación nos dicen a todas horas lo que está sucediendo – cosa que solía ser diferente en el pasado. Nos esperan grandes cosas por aprender, si no lo conseguimos a través de la inteligencia puede ser que tengamos que aprender a través de catástrofes. Un ejemplo - Dedico parte de mi dinero a una organización en África que ayuda a los niños tener acceso a agua potable. A través de una pajita, que llevan en el cuello y sirve como filtro les ayudamos a beber agua filtrada con el fin de protegerles de enfermedades. Mientras estos problemas siguen existiendo aun nos queda mucho por aprender, sin duda. DÓNDE EN IBIZA TE PODEMOS OÍR ESTE AÑO? Neukölln, an area in Berlin that embodies many different walks of life, a society built on multicultural being. It is home to people migrated from the world over, which as of 2009, includes Australian born producer Rick Bull AKA Deepchild. ‘Neuköln Burning’ is a 14 track album which tells a tale of Deepchild’s Berlin winter experience. An album not only thematically important but with dub-inflected sounds evolved with the iconic club culture of his newly adopted hometown.

As one of the true electronic masters of his generation, Jori Hulkkonen comes with an almost untouchable reputation amongst his peers and fans. Featuring vocals from Harri Falck, Olga Kouklaki and Jori himself (Jiihoo), this latest LP is arguably his most concise work to date, seamlessly fitting in with the cultured sounds of modern dance music, whilst possessing a timeless quality that should keep this album shining, and fans dancing, forever more.

After a four years break Falko is back with another longplayer, this time he surprises with a deep emotional facette, showcasing his wide range of tolols to express deeper feelings with an ease that can only be described as lovely. Featuring artists like Benjamin Fehr or Big Bully, this album is another one for the collector’s corner - and definitely the sophisticated floors of our edm world.

Shakers and bongos open things up on ‘Faces’, before a big, unwavering 4/4 kick enters the floor coupled with a hazy bassline. An evocative vocal loop is used creatively in trademark SIS style. For A2, things get a little darker with a minimal, almost micro house intro on ‘Unforty’. On the flip we dive straight back into some more vocal-led, peak time madness on ‘Miles From Me’. Finally we return to the deep for ‘Forward Line’, a driving and relentless piece characterised by a slick percussive groove and hypnotic synth lead.

The El Spirito EP is a three-track vinyl. The A side, El Spirito is one of the lead tracks from the Fading LP – which is set to be released a week later on 3rd September. A most sophisticated deep cosmic house flyer that drills into your brain via lovely melodies, vocal bits to shine your heart and surprisingly fresh usage of multiple instruments. Drop the seatbelt and spread the wings.

H.O.S.H. / EGO

As the first track says - love will save the day - it looks like finally Bingo + Alex found their sound, and with the help of Anna Gi they bring back an old classic in a most cool way. As well the other tracks are pouring coolness and happy feelings to the max. Very well done ladies and gentlemen, so far my favourite for this month.

‘Don Arp’ kicks off with a mid-tempo banger that works as perfectly early-on in a set as it would at a peak-time strobe-n-smoke moment. The vibe is pure heads down funk - from the irresistible groove to the ecstatic cut up vocals – but it’s the ﬁlthy, Funktion One-troubling bassline that fully detonates thisBbasement bomb. Sharing the B side with the dub, comes ‘Facebook’. Way more fun than the social network, H.O.S.H drops another heavy-grooving bodymover. Clocking in at 114bpm, the track hints at that slightly deranged part of the night – a pitched down vocal, a neurotic melody and enough grit and attitude to rock any ﬂagging feet.

RAZ O’HARA / EL ZAHIR

Raz Ohara is back on Kindisch with another obsessive release, ‘El Zahir’. A shuffling mix of acoustic guitar riffs, licks, natural percussion and of course Raz’s well known melancholic vocal lines all come together to generate a country folk feeling of the 60’s.

The original is as deep and groovy as it can get, perfect to warm up, cool down or extend any party anywhere. But what really drives me mad is one of the remixes, the Acid Pauli one. This remix is one of a kind, bringing back old memories of the Dorian Gray in Frankfurt to my mind with hours of hypnotic, twisted sweet Techno, you could call it Detroitish Techy House flavoured with the sweetness of today’s Underground Pop, then twisted sounds drill in followed by vocal bits - only to lead you to dancefloor heaven. Unbelievably well produced. The other remixes come from Mira + Chris Schwarzwaelder and Meyerdierks, very groovy and very cool.

SCUBA / THE HOPE RMXS

2 Come Back is deceptively languid, yet hugely propulsive, bristling with welldefined melodic elements, based around its incredibly memorable bassline hook. Its myriad of subtle synth melodies are exactly where they are meant to be, no notes or noises misplaced. Just when one is lulled into a sense of latenight mid-tempo bliss, a second hook – a vocal this time – adds a whole new layer of energy bringing the song to a deserved crescendo. 2 remixes: Miguel Campbell’s profoundly funky electronic bassline struts throughout and the original’s melodies are sharpened to rhythmic precision. Fur Coat comes in like a nighttime yin to Campbell’s yang. Bringing the original’s vocal hook to the front but putting their own robotic funk twist on it, Fur Coat exercise their easily identified style, that combines dark electronics with warmer elements.

MAETRIK / UNLEASH THE BEAST

‘The Poem’ is a slice of deep tech bubbling with heat, richly dark atmosphere, and syncopated drums. Having long resonated with Eric Estornel aka Maetrik/ Maceo Plex, the producer has utilized the original verse from a def-poetry jam video creating a bona fide bomb in the process. Next up, Maceo Plex gets “Revenge” with his ‘Walk Alone’ remix combining his own well-renowned vocal flair with a cascade of synth melodies and stabs of wonky bass driven by slick beats and the ever-marauding bassline. The toughest and techiest cut on the EP comes with closer ‘To The Top’, showcasing a raw and dirty warehouse vibe with a growling low-end, wonky bass synths and flecks of acid. 80

SYSTEM OF SURVIVAL / ROUGH EVERYTIME

Following the release of his highly acclaimed debut album, On Acid, earlier this year, Berlin artist, Recondite, steps in to provide two deep and dark remixes of Scuba’s ‘The Hope’ for the next Hotﬂush single. The label has long been championing Recondite’s work. Here, he deﬁnes both remixes in the form of two journeys taken at opposing times of the day: a late-night drive and an early-morning walk. In both, the energy and aggression of Scuba’s original is drawn increasingly into a more desolate landscape as glacial synth lines bleed over one another into depths lurking far below the planes of convention.

BICEP / YOU/DON’T DO IT

London-based, Belfast-born blogger-production duo Matt McBriar and Andy Ferguson need little by way of introduction. They1ve released one absolutely killer track after another, snaking through everything from deep disco edits to moody two-step to classic New Jersey House vibes with incredible ease, on some of the most exciting labels out there: Throne of Blood, Under the Shade, Domino, Love Fever and now,Aus Music. This EP sees the pair working in collaboration with fellow Northern Irish producer Ejeca (aka Garry McCartney), as well as the inimitable Serge Santiago (in his Omar Odyssey guise), with Panorama Bar resident Steffi rounding off the release perfectly with a superbly crafted remix. >

The opening track, ‘Deeper Love’, really sets the direction of the whole EP, full of irresistible groove and atmosphere. A warm and fuzzy synthesizer combined with that catchy “deeper love” vocal and a funky guitar riff will effortlessly enliven the crowd. Next up, ‘By Your Side’ initially seduces with that wiggly sequencer bassline. After the first break the tune unfolds with a powerful electro pulse - the teasing blend of a deep, pitched down vocal, funky bent chords and a fizzing synth line resulting in a bona fide Bomb! With ‘Motions’, Adriatique deliver another melodic masterpiece that really gets the body grooving. The fourth and title track ‘Bodymovin’ brings the EP to a vibrant close with 80s style vocoder and a bouncing bassline to shake the floor with that special Diynamic endorsed magic.

Heidis new label ‘Heidi presents Jackathon Jams’ - HPJJ - gives its debut with three heavy weights, tINI, Maya Jane Coles and Miss Kittin, manifesting that this is not a mans domain at all. All three tracks are wonderul groovy, dirty and sexy as they should be yet characteristic for each artist. ‘Getting freaky’ from Maya sets deep beats over a sexy vocal and rare but innovative synth sounds, ‘Girlz’ from Miss Kittin is a percussion monster with sub bass deepness over techy synths and tINI remixes this one to a deeper level of consciousness.

AUDIOFLY + CLOSE SENSE / PROMISES Leading the EP is “You Promised” which encapsulates the sexiness of Daniel’s voice, Close Sense’s attention to detail, and Audiofly’s studio trickery into a low-slung dark number. Cascading from a deep kick drum, the tracks vocals add a variable of relatable sexiness to its listeners. “Gonzo” has a more insistent rhythm and a baseline that, when it comes half way through the track, dance floors lift to new heights. Sexy tambourine harmonies and spacey zaps relocate you into a realm of allusion through the deep funky bass lines and layered soulful lyrics. Carola Pisaturo starts her remix slowly with deep baselines until the loop is introduced. Last track is “Moments of Truth”, a deep number that will certainly work wonders when the sun is at its peak.

EXERCISE ONE + M. JOHNSON / LOST FOREVER.../BLIND TRAPEZE In ‘Lost forever in a happy crowd’ Exercise One team up with Mathew Jonson, for a release that illuminates the key elements of both the producers sound. Both artists are at home pressing record at the start of a long relaxed daytime jam, then editing and tweaking the live take for a final flowing mix. It’s deep, it’s melodic, it’s a little twisted in parts and it makes us want to wiggle it - just like the guys themselves. ‘Blind Trapeze’ is a classic Exercise One techno journey with a boisterous rocky bassline and an extra shake of darkness with Leonard’s vocals looming over the mix. And there’s a dub bonus, as a bonus.

KONRAD BLACK + ART DEPARTMENT / GRAVEYARD TAN When two great acts - or better said three great artists - put their creativity in one pot you can expect something outstanding. Especially when they are Konrad Black, Kenny Glasgow and Jonny White. Name of the track is a bit confusing as it is not as dark as it sounds, beautiful hypnotic after hour beats meet drilled melodies and schizophrenic vocals, flavoured with swirling synths scented with a slight dark atmo. There are two versions, my fave is the number 2, a bit deeper and more mysterious. Both are played best after warm-up, direct after peaktime or anywhere after 8 am. Only for the brave

AIRHEAD / PYRAMID LAKE + BLACK INK Pyramid Lake again showcases his expert manipulation of samples, but this time weaves them into a drunken dance groove, full of whirring percussion and heavy bass. Black Ink is a bubbling, percussive roller that in the hands of a lesser producer would sound like a traincrash. It bounces along almost out of control and sucks you into its charms until it hits you with some uplifting, haunted chords, at which point it’s impossible to resist.

ANDREW GRANT + LOMEZ / HAS TO BE LOVE The record opens with the entrancing strains of ‘Distant Thunder’, a wonderfully hypnotic deep and techy house affair that fuses subtle melodies with fluttering bass and rolling drums to create a record with real feeling. Second of the three originals comes in the shape of title track ‘Has to be Love’, journeying into eighties tinged electro territory with its Human League-esque drums and soaring synths playing host to the heavily effected vocals, sublime stuff. Next we have ‘Be Free’ which sees the pair drop the tempo and deliver a laid back and soulful gem. Amirali delivers a wonderful reinterpretation of ‘Has to be Love’. The drums are stripped back, the parts twisted up and the record is reimagined as a sonic soundscape. 82

MARK HENNING / CHICAGO SUNRISE A classic acapella and Marks distinctive sound collide, resulting in a huge tune, sounding old school and fresh at the same time. Not just the vocals are telling a story here, the synths and bassline add their part to complete the track. Afrilounge take it a step deeper in their mixes. The ‘back2basic’ mix features the dynamic they’re famous for, the FM Dope Mix and it’s big string melody sounds as clean as and sparkles like the sunrise itself. When James What asked what we thought about his edit, we signed it right away as soon as we heard it. His acid version ﬁts perfectly to the package! The second original ‘Trojan’ is the secret weapon and club bomb, the dark side of the release, because too much sunshine is never healthy...

SEI A / YOU CAN BRING Sei A’s profile has been building ever since the release of his debut album, ‘Editing Shadows,’ in 2008 which received a rapturous reception throughout the music press. On this new EP, Sei A’s strong signature production values remain at the heart of the record, which melds deep and forwardthinking techno with rich textures and moody atmospherics. Swedish DJ, producer and Studio Barnhus boss, Axel Boman steps in to provide a superb remix, which brings the EP to a perfect close.
