WELCOME TO ABSOLUT FRINGE, THE 15TH EDITION OF DUBLIN FRINGE FESTIVAL, AND MY FIRST AS DIRECTOR. THE PAST YEAR HAS WHIZZED BY AT A TREMENDOUS SPEED RESULTING IN WHAT WILL BE AN EXTRAORDINARY FESTIVAL FULL OF PERFORMANCES AND EVENTS TO THRILL AND EXCITE YOU.

6

IT WOULDN’T HAVE BEEN POSSIBLE TO GET HERE WITHOUT THE AMAZING TALENTS OF PARTICIPATING ARTISTS, THE FRINGE TEAM, THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS AND THE SUPPORT OF OUR CORE FUNDERS: THE ARTS COUNCIL, DUBLIN CITY COUNCIL AND FÁILTE IRELAND. I AM ALSO DELIGHTED THAT THIS YEAR MARKS THE FIRST OF OUR COLLABORATION WITH ABSOLUT VODKA, WHOSE ONGOING AND FEARLESS SUPPORT OF ARTISTS AT THE CUTTING EDGE MIRRORS OUR OWN AT THE FRINGE.

7

In early 2009, we sent a call for applications which invited artists to confront, embrace and defy this period of remarkable change and challenges. We wanted to celebrate the fresh reemergence of DIY culture, reclaim more of our city’s empty spaces, experiment with theatre and performance on the street and in even more unexpected places. More than anything else we wanted the 2009 programme to not shy away from an exploration of where we are and how we got here; as a city, nation and international community of makers, doers, watchers and thinkers. The response was phenomenal. From a barge on Grand Canal Dock to an abandoned ward in St. Brendan’s Hospital, from a pastoral meadow on Dame Street to a looming shadow over west Temple Bar; this festival is all over, and all about your city. We have designed this year’s brochure like a guide book to Dublin. Each section of the brochure corresponds to a neighbourhood full of Fringe-y delights, detailed on the map overleaf.

To help you along your way, you will find informative icons attached to each show listing. There are more ways than ever for you to get involved in this year’s festival. Our Fringe Clubs programme, Michelle Browne’s Mind The Gap, HomeoftheBewildered’s Angry School, our Talks programme and Coney’s immersive adventure Long Lost Cousin are all dependant on the active participation of an audience, so get involved! We know times are tough this year, so for those of you on a tight budget, we’ve included icons to let you know which events are f ree or under a tenner. Whatever your budget, there’s something here for you.

8

Despite the difficult times we are living in, the participating artists and companies in this year’s festival have stepped up to create bold and ambitious experiences for you, the audience. Fringe Favourites at this year’s festival, who Fringe audiences have flocked to in the past, include The Performance Corporation, Loose Canon, Rex Levitates, Volta, Dylan Tighe, Melanie Wilson, Rotozaza, Gúna Nua, last year’s Spirit of the Fringe winners Jouissance, and Flipside. For those of you looking to experience the shock of the new, we recommend checking out new companies like THEATREClub, The Company, Daguerreotype, ponydance, Manchán Magan, Monsters and Players and Talking Shop Ensemble. Those with a keen sense of adventure, who love finding the Fringe in the most unusual and extreme locations should look out for totally fringe shows like Waterworn, Nurse Me, Black Bessie, A Spoonful of Silence, Madame Butterfly, Basin and Box.

This is the last year to experience the magic of the Spiegeltent and the multiaward winning La Clique at the festival. If you haven’t been, make sure not to miss it. If you’ve been before, come and relive the memories. We are also introducing a new venue to the festival this year in the form of the ABSOLUT FRINGE FACTORY*. Hosting a jam packed programme of new Irish and international work across all genres, there is a also a bar, where you can chill out, talk about the show you’ve seen with your mates and rub shoulders with the artists who made it. International work not to be missed includes the world premiere of Gerardo Naumann’s A Useful Play Co-produced by ABSOLUT FRINGE and Project Arts Centre, featuring a local cast of twenty, Edit Kaldor’s Point Blank and Ranters Theatre’s Holiday. For those of you who loved last year’s hits Bouffon Glass Menagerie and Red Bastard, do not miss Die Roten Punkte and The Lost Pirates at the Metro Bosco Theatre. So come along, take a chance, try something new, and participate! — Róise Goan

ANN AND BARRY: WHAT KIND OF TIME DO YOU CALL THIS?

COMPANY: Asylum Productions VENUE: Mill Street Studios TIME: 8pm DATES: Sat 5th - Sat 12th PREVIEW: Fri 4th (€10) MATINEE: Wed 9th & Sat 12th at 3pm (€10) DURATION: 60 mins TICKET PRICE: €14/€12

COMPANY: Talking Shop Ensemble VENUE: National College of Art

Red Riding Hood meets Lolita, via South Park and Freud. Once upon a twisted time, Lola left her grandma’s house and wandered off the path... Lola’s not a little girl anymore. Lola lives in a land where children are sexualised, schoolgirls fetishised and every male stranger a potential predator. Performed entirely backwards, Red Lola is a surreal, darkly comic journey into the realm of the subconscious... “Like Beckett crossed with children’s puppetry... riveting... a powerful dramatic punch... bravura performances” Sunday Times “A body-bending exploration of the world of sexuality...” Evening Echo

“Ann like cakes. Barry likes jam”... “Ann likes coke. Barry likes birds”. New words we learned today: coke and birds. As middle-class suburbia spirals towards excess, our childhood friends, Ann and Barry, struggle to find the point of it all. Flit between past and present in a fusion of drama, dark comedy, music and dance on a trip through the NCAD campus. A searing dissection of contemporary Irish culture continuously begs the question, “just what kind of time do you call this?”

ACT WITHOUT WORDS II BY SAMUEL BECKETT COMPANY: Sarah Jane Scaife VENUE: Meet at Barnardo Sq,

beside City Hall TIME: 8:45pm and 9:45pm DATES: Wed 9th - Sat 12th PREVIEW: Wed 9th at 8:45 pm (€6) DURATION: 45 mins TICKET PRICE: €10/€8

With two contrasting characters living in sacks, Act Without Words II is one of Samuel Beckett’s most universal and versatile plays, and Sarah Jane Scaife is bringing it to the streets – literally. Well, figuratively, in this brilliant mime play which she has directed in Ireland, China, Malaysia, Singapore and Greece. In the Dublin of 2009 with all the problems of homelessness and drug addiction, this play resonates with a power that is both chilling and all too familiar. Performed by Raymond Keane and Bryan Burroughs with design by Aedín Cosgrove.

David Rolland Chorégraphies. Supported by Dublin City Council & Ambassade de France VENUE: St. Patrick’s Park TIME: 2.30pm DATES: Sat 12th DURATION: 53 mins TICKET PRICE:

Free. No ticket required.

Join us and thousands of others around the world who have already come together for this impromptu travelling dancefloor. St. Patrick’s Park will be transformed by an ocean of people participating in what David Rolland describes as “collective choreography”. On arrival, each audience member receives a booklet with written instructions of what to do and when: don’t worry, you won’t be leaping and twirling, the most difficult thing to do is a “subtle swaying of the hips”. The minute gestures we come across in everyday life turn into dance moves, quickly making way for an atmosphere of amusement and fun.

CATHEDRALS & THE LIBERTIES

Perhaps you know St Patrick’s Park, the garden between St Patrick’s Cathedral and Bull Alley, as a great spot for lunchtime picnics, dossing in the afternoon sunshine and just hiding from the city. Benches ring the fountain. By genteel mounds of stately, heady rosebushes, under trees young mothers push prams or sit to chat. A kid totters along the stone balustrade. Hang on a minute, it’s a Monday afternoon. `Shouldn’t you be at...? Oi! C’mere you!’ In the O’Dodder family of Dublin, this is the naughty wee brother on the mitch from school. Where is the hidden pathway through the park? That’s a little adventure to be discovered only if you can find Bruv Jim. Long Lost Cousin is an adventure running throughout the Festival. www.longlostcousin.net

The number two killer of men between the age of 21 and 60 is heart disease. The number one killer is the Lost Pirates. This bawdy bunch of boat borne bastards from 1816 have stolen instruments, learned how to harness the power of electricity and embarked upon a campaign of musical debauchery. Brave the shifting sands of uncertainty and leap into the unknown in this open-handed exploration of working together, in which artists and audiences alike share thrills and spills in the act of creation. As a dance research project into instant composition, the ensemble invents a new show every day. The performers play with humour, grace, daring and honesty, to create a rich and dynamic piece of living theatre. Evolving performances created by Wolfgang Hoffmann and Daniel Weaver with Myriad Dance. These are work-in-progress showings.

A man found by the sea: he never speaks, only plays the piano. One morning he awakes: the playing stops, he disappears. What happened the night before he woke up from his long silence? Three women perform a triptych of stories and unveil the man’s shadow in the vaults. Memories, sounds and photographs merge during a night that reveals what it means to be observed, looked after, imprisoned and alone. Inspired by the true story of a voiceless man, this is a site-specific performance about falling asleep, waking up and moments of silence in between. Conceived by Kevin Wallace and Marilena Zaroulia.

Quite simply the Greatest Vegetable Circus on Earth! In this piece of comic absurd theatre we meet Mister & Missus, two genius performers who find a hidden beauty in cast-off vegetables from which they make a wonderful show full of excitement, danger, and sensuality! Marvel at the Veget-animal! Gape at the Magical Carrot! Enthrall at the Leek of Power! Fantasise over the Onion Strip Tease! The Cirque de Légume shows us how beautiful life can be if we only stop to play with it. You’ll never look at an onion the same way again.

Manchán Magan is a disillusioned Gaeilge fanatic seeking revenge for the death of the language on his star pupil, a lonely 18 year old dancer. He offers the audience an opportunity to save her from her fate by answering some simple questions. This is an intimate piece of bilingual theatre, directed by Tom Creed, understandable even to Béarlóirí (yuck!). An Irish lesson goes badly wrong and too much is revealed. Is it in Irish? Can language be a weapon? Who the feic knows?

From the bar to the chaise longue, Holiday is the journey of man’s simple complexities, set within a sparingly elegant design, complimented by a contemporary baroque musical score. THROWING ROCKS

COMPANY: Caroline Simon

COMPANY: Busy Rocks/Franziska

Aigner and Gabriel Schenker

A piece with lots of fantasy and humor, impressive situations and surprising twists: a little piece of life on stage. She’s cute but dangerous. She has red hair and super long legs, she dances - my God: as never seen before. Too beautiful to be true. Indeed. Caroline Simon makes the principle the theme: the assertion of an ideal world on stage. In a wonderfully ironic monologue, she describes an unbelievable choreography including passionate romance. Caroline Simon succeeds with a highly comical dance performance, which plays very competently with the weaknesses of its art.

Throwing Rocks cuts a striking image with brightly coloured spandex, bodies impossibly intertwined and hidden or invisible faces. They contort themselves in couples, making a body without organs, framed with humour, with the intent of showing the limitations of such an assemblage and how the body can actually turn out to be “stupid”. Peculiar and bold, Busy Rocks’ unconventional approach to creating work results in a bold, adventurous piece.

Dance is dance… or is it? What if each dancer has different physical abilities? Where can this lead? Croí Glan, Ireland’s leading Integrated Dance company, produce work “of considerable power” (Irish Times) and their new offering is no exception. This humorous but poignant quartet investigates the disparity between how we view ourselves, and how we are viewed by others through the powerful cocktail of identity, sexuality and politics. David Bolger, Artistic Director of CoisCéim Dance Theatre, has choreographed a piece which may redefine your perceptions. Funded by the Arts Council and produced in association with The Firkin Crane, Cork.

A normal day. A normal man and woman. A tremendous shooting. Raw and powerful violence spills out on stage in Arno Schuitemaker’s newest creation. A long time ago, the theatre was a stage for violence. In our contemporary society, this stage is replaced by other media, such as big blockbuster movies and shoot ‘em up videogames. Here, the relationship between violence and entertainment is re-examined, using a strong physical language but without losing respect for the body and its vulnerability.

The Joy of Box Electronic music meets abstract visual experiments, resulting in an explosion of double bass and ukuleles, infra-red video and origami flower shredding. Bubble wrap pops, aging old books are flicked in time and poetry is typewritten live to the music. With looping riffs and electronic wonders, musicians Tom Hill and Andy Tytherleigh create a live audio-visual performance with video artist Jim Boxall. Using multiple instruments, new and old technologies and unorthodox objects they produce an intimate and vivid experience.

Delivered by a pseudo-pregnant male, the latest piece by this London-based failed zoologist traces his own existence from his mother’s womb to the stage. The audience are asked to consider the overly intimate relationships of family using live performance, original animation, the occasional balloon, and a rather large collection of rabbits. “One of the most engaging performances from an emerging artist I have seen… magical and totally original and accessible experience” London Artists Projects

The first Glee Club was founded in London in 1787, but the best Glee Club ever is this one right here. It’s got singing! It’s got… well mostly just singing really, with Neil O’Connor of Somadrone and Redneck Manifesto fame. But you’ll compose a song with him to perform at the ABSOLUT FRINGE awards too. According to Yale Glee Club, its members are drawn together by a common understanding that raising one’s voice with others to create something beautiful is one of the noblest human pursuits. Er... for this, just think choir, but with a bit more pizzazz. Come along, take a deep breath, open your mouth and spew forth glee.

Geek is chic and no more so that at ABSOLUT FRINGE’s Science Club, with Science Gallery. The Science Club will explore the science of taste and aroma, creating some kitchen chemistry and whipping up a feast of food foams to link in with the ongoing BUBBLE exhibition at Science Gallery. These hands-on workshops will be led by leading food scientist David Jackson, who will guide the gastro-geeks through an exploration of taste, smell, physiology and psychology of taste and molecular gastronomy. Make like Heston and sign up to this Science Club with something for all the senses.

Cardboard, wax, papier-mache, MDF, tinfoil and discarded packaging are just some of the impoverished materials playfully utilized by artists Sam Keogh and Joe Noonan Ganley. Aiming to root out an ethical base for action in a radically unfair world, these two artists begin by gathering their subject matter and material from the debris of global collapse from which they fashion physical exclamations, questions and tentative answers to our current situation.

Mandana grows letters in her field. The availability of letters, which enables her to talk, depends on the season and the harvest. She crafts her sentences delicately as she tells you her story, allowing you to enjoy the silence between the words. She is waiting for you by the stove in her cosy kitchen, sprinkling rose petals into a freshly made pot of tea. Hold a warm cup in your hands and embark on a journey to the present moment. A delicious and raw performance questioning our use of words. This show can be enjoyed as part of a healthy diet.

The basin is a miraculous cloistered discovery when you stumble upon it. It has happy coteries of weatherbeaten drinkers hanging out together in all weathers. You wouldn’t dream of swimming in it, unless you were a ‘tchung fella out for the mess with your mates on a mad hot day. It has a little island in the middle, peaceable ducks, a small jetty of indeterminate function (although I wouldn’t try very hard to determine). In the McTolka family of Dublin, it’s the mysteriously serene maiden aunt, who may have considered the convent at one point in her extreme youth, has a secret and doesn’t care to share it. What lies in the water? That’s a little adventure to be discovered if only you can find Aunti Fee. Long Lost Cousin is an adventure and a game running throughout the Festival. Look to the postcard that’s been sent you at www.longlostcousin.net.

Such is the dilemma facing condemned author and playwright, Jaromir Hladik, for whom time stands still in Jorge Luis Borges’ story ‘The Secret Miracle’. SMITHFIELD & THE BATTER

Shot and recorded over a month on a narrow Dublin street of bustling barristers, bowed street-drinkers, box-ticking tourists, proud and shamed seekers-of-a-free-lunch at the Capuchin day centre, Bow St. is a film and exhibition that hurries and slows to the criss-crossing paces of a hundred passers-by. The camera traces the movements and pauses of everyday lives; voices drift in and out with personal stories, musings on life and love, fuck ups and forgiveness, holding on and letting go. A unique look past the assumed anonymity of our urban lives.

Simon does magic at little kids’ birthday parties. They scream and cry and throw cake while he pulls rainbow coloured handkerchiefs out of his sleeves and coaxes balloons into poodles. On January the 15th Simon alias Bonbo the magician (co-writer of Fringe 07’s Hairy Bottom & the Jockstrap of Destiny) lost his father, through no fault of his own, to death. And then promptly went to Jimmy Murphy’s 6th in Coolock. A true story of memory, loss and finding hope through magic. And balloon animals.

Belfast. Hot summer’s day turns into hot summer’s night, and two bad lads who don’t like each other spend the day trying to avoid each other. But it’s not easy. After all, you have to show your face! Rosemary Jenkinson’s play pulls no punches in its portrayal of the youths who populate the avenues and alleyways of the city. Told at breakneck speed in the foulest of tongues, Johnny Meister and the Stitch is a dark, funny, poetic and brutally honest new tragedy from the backstreets.

Love does a tab of acid and tells us everyone lies. Slip the tongue; too much fast food. Avoid mentioning dips in mood. You’re a slut, but hey, you’re young. FUCK POSTMODERN. FUCK POPULAR CULTURE. FUCK TALKING ABOUT IT. FUCK ANYONE YOU LIKE. Rough is epic. It’s an epic about creating epic, living epic, being epic. It sounds like electro, tastes like cigarettes, feels like cold concrete under bare feet and sees this town with filthy eyes.

A sortie into a curious cityscape of the future past, featuring Iris Brunette: part time-traveling refugee, part compassionate voyeur. Using starkly elegant imagery, tender camaraderie and a dense and elegiac sound score, Iris delicately uncoils the remembrance of a friendship destroyed by the outbreak of war and the unfathomable demise of lost kinship and love. A warmly mournful, hypnotic and transporting piece, inspired by the film ‘La Jetee’ by Chris Marker. “Give this girl an audience and make her a star.”  The Herald

Four voices lead an evening of improvised storytelling and music, conjured out of nothing as you watch, in a one-off performance that might be in one moment as weird and hilarious as the wildest noiseart installation, and in the next as starkly, incandescently intimate as a beautiful piece of cinema. On the 15th January 2007 the British press reported a foiled terrorist threat involving a group of men attempting to make a homemade explosive device using chapatti flour, the central ingredient of Indian bread. This time, the Great British love affair with Indian food had taken on a whole new meaning. By re-arranging different material from found media (newspapers and websites) with personal encounters with terror(ism) and anti-terror(ism), Jiva Parthipan explores the terror of living. Co-commissioned by Birmingham Repertory Theatre and Collide with additional support from Arts Council England. www.jivajiva.com ‘With a blend of provocation and sly humour, artist Jiva Parthipan deliberately engages with cultural paranoia’ Tina Jackson, Metro

“It’s a bit tender, a bit brutal, a bit sexual. I have a scar on my chin and feel it from time to time.” Patrizia Paolini, a former Battersea Arts Centre Supported Artist, turns diarist, provocateur and detective in a raw, gross, angry and funny account of how various men she encountered came to have scars on their chins. Intercutting an intimate delivery with fragments of video projection, dance and comedy, this one-woman show, in a faltering, hyperventilated delivery where words skip like heartbeats, opens a world of metaphor from the smallest of marks.

Stuck on her family farm, yearning for Dublin, she wants to swap the green fields for a concrete jungle and the endless quiet for a ceaseless noise. WWW.FRINGEFEST.COM / 1850 FRING E (1850 374643)

ALL OVER DUBLIN

The amphitheatre appears amid a concrete jungle next to the civic offices, but sitting on the stone seats you can see the Liffey beyond. This is the worst of places on a rainy day, but when the sun breaks and the grassy banked ampitheatre plays host to a gathering of bare feet, suits on their lunch break and stray children, it feels like the best of places…In the FitzPoddle family of Dublin, it’s the rogue uncle mostly dour, who cracks a smile and hands you a bar of chocolate with a wink to not tell your mother. What happens on the stage? That’s a little adventure to be discovered if only you can find Unca Donnacadh. Long Lost Cousin is an adventure running throughout the Festival. www.longlostcousin.net
