Take a bow! The arts really matter to us in Ireland; they are a big part of people’s lives, the country’s single most popular pursuit. Our artists interpret our past, define who we are today, and imagine our future. We can all take pride in the enormous reputation our artists have earned around the world. The arts play a vital role in our economy, and smart investment of taxpayers’ money in the arts is repaid many times over. The dividends come in the form of a high value, creative economy driven by a flexible, educated, innovative work force, and in a cultural tourism industry worth a2.4 billion directly a year. The Arts Council is the Irish Government agency for funding and developing the arts. Arts Council funding from the taxpayer, through the Department of Tourism, Culture and Sport, for 2010 is a69.15 million, that’s less than a1 a week for every household.
So, at the end of your next great festival experience, don’t forget the role you played and take a bow yourself! Find out what’s on at

WELC Welcome to ABSOLUT Fringe 2010. Since last year’s festival, times have been tough all round; we know that. We’ve been thinking a lot over the past year about what our audience would like to see and how the festival can best reflect what’s going on in the lives of Dubliners and visitors to Dublin this September. Don’t worry; it won’t be a festival of gloom.

director’s welcome
What we have observed and been part of is a welcome resurgence in community spirit, and as a result, Community is the common thread running through this year’s festival. We are interested in what brings people together and how that defines them and you. In difficult times, people gather, roll their sleeves up and set about making change, and the collective energy they harness can move mountains. This meitheal is what ABSOLUT Fringe has always been about, and this guiding principle permeates everything we do. We couldn’t do it without an extraordinary group of diverse and hugely talented artists, willing and energetic volunteers, courageous funders and media partners, especially our core funder The Arts Council and title sponsor ABSOLUT, a hugely dedicated voluntary board, and you, the audience. We’ve been very lucky to work with a number of partners who believe in community spirit too and their dedication and support has MORE› been invaluable.

Our Show in a Bag project is the result of a partnership with Fishamble: The New Play Company and Irish Theatre Institute; resourcing actors with shows they can tour and earn an income from, while simultaneously resourcing venues across the country with high-quality, low-tech touring theatre. Despite a massive cut to their own funding, The Performance Corporation has stepped up with tremendous generosity to support three emerging companies participating in the festival this year by lending their time, expertise and in-house resources to bring these projects to full production. CREATE responded to our community theme by offering one participating project a bursary to help them engage with a specific community, and have assisted ABSOLUT Fringe in recruiting participants for Nic Green’s Trilogy. Dance Ireland is our continued and greatly valued partner in presenting new choreographic works at Dance House. RTÉ have partnered with us to produce RadioActive, a season of new short works for radio, which will be broadcast as part of the festival and available for daily download. We are working with our regular collaborator Project Arts Centre to present a new show by last year’s Spirit of the Fringe winners The Company, as well as Theatre Forum, Cork Midsummer Festival, and Project Arts Centre on MAKE, our artist development residency, which happened earlier this year at the Tyrone Guthrie Centre, Annaghmakerrig.

director’s welcome
We are delighted to introduce a new venue to the festival this year. The ABSOLUT Fringe Factory at Hector Greys will be the exclusive home to a very exciting music programme, Pajama Men’s Last Stand to Reason and our brand new festival club, offering 16 nights of unadulterated entertainment throughout the festival. Tickets to all events at the ABSOLUT Fringe Factory are extremely limited so book early to avoid crushing heartbreak and devastating disappointment. ABSOLUT Fringe is about you and for you. As ever, there are so many ways you can get involved in the festival, from attending one of our many free events to buying a €5 ticket to the festival club, to dancing naked on stage in Nic Green’s Trilogy, to volunteering with us, to becoming a festival patron. We would love you to get involved. We’d also love to know what you think. You can engage with us online on Facebook, Twitter or on our own website www. fringefest.com Thank you for your ongoing support of ABSOLUT Fringe. I hope you enjoy this year’s festival!

Dreaming is as serious as living or dying in this wild, raw, wondrous world. In one of the most historic, astounding locations in the city, Macnas have conjured a fantastical night-time reverie to open this year’s festival in spectacular fashion. An epic and exhilarating visual feast, come and dream the extreme. I am so thrilled to open this year’s festival with the triumphant return to Dublin of Ireland’s leading street theatre company presenting this magical new show directed by Noeline Kavanagh.

Robin Robertson’s stunning new version of Euripides’ MEDEA is given a visceral production by award-winning director Selina Cartmell. SIREN ’s interpretation of this timeless classic presents it as a contemporary domestic drama – a shockingly modern story of a man and a woman caught in the nets of jealously and destructive love. Blurring the boundaries between theatre and live installation, public and private lives and what is seen and unseen, this MEDEA will haunt you forever. A new show from SIREN PRODUCTIONS and Selina Cartmell is always reason to get excited. This production goes further still, presenting a new and utterly contemporary take on a classic. festival director

Irish contemporary artist Fergal McCarthy’s visionary new project LiffeyTown will have its world premiere at this year’s Festival A public art installation of floating red and green houses, LiffeyTown will be moored on the River Liffey for the duration of the Festival. Do the houses mirror the shaky foundation of Ireland’s housing obsession? Are they drawing our attention to the river, Dublin’s real city centre? Or maybe they’re a futuristic vision? Take a stroll, day or night, along the quays and decide for yourself. Magical, thoughtful and epic, Fergal McCarthy’s impression on the Liffey will stay with you long after this installation leaves the river. festival director

Expect passion, beauty and 50 naked female volunteer dancers in this radical performance.
Spanning three striking parts, Trilogy is a disarming and buoyant venture that interrogates the joys and complexities of being a woman today. A remarkable celebratory communion of women, it features a defiant call to action along with an emotive response to the raucous 1971 landmark feminist panel discussion ‘Town Bloody Hall’ (featuring Germaine Greer and Norman Mailer). A work designed to challenge, inspire and make way for positive change, this is feminism for the 21st century – are women liberated or limited? Nic Green and her superb company will force you to decide for yourself in this remarkable work, delivered with raw, relentless energy. ‘Angry, joyous, heartfelt, rigorous and radiant with hope.’ The Guardian Supported & developed by the Arches, BAC and Barbican Bite 10. You may love this show (like I did), you may hate it, but you should see it. Bring your father, mother, daughter, aunt and friends. This is the most explosive conversation starter in this year’s programme.

Taylor Mac in Concert: U. S . A .
Comparison is Violence or The Ziggy Stardust Meets Tiny Tim Songbook
While praising international performance artist Taylor Mac for his ukulele playing gender-bending performances, over 20 publications have, of their own volition, described him as, ‘Ziggy Stardust meets Tiny Tim’. Being a queen who can take a hint, Mac has decided to write and perform an original conversation about comparison, while singing Tiny Tim songs and the entire Ziggy Stardust album. It promises to be a concert unlike any other. “Taylor Mac seduces you, breaks your heart, patches it back up again and sews sequins along the scars” —The Irish Times This is a standing concert. Taylor played a small tour of festivals in Ireland a few years back and left a legion of devotees behind him. He’s back with a new show even more fabulous than the last, if that’s possible. festival director

A three course banquet of bands and soloists from Ireland’s best specialist music producer and a tonal feast fit for the most perceptive ears. The ascendant Pablo Held has an exceptional grasp of piano trio aesthetics, with few impediments to his artistic appetite. A poetic virtuoso, the young German is already drawing comparison with Brad Mehldau. The lines between jazz and contemporary music grow ever more fluid and Trilogue explore that space, embracing a range of textures, moods and dynamics outside the vocabulary of either, and more attuned to the times we live in. In a solo groove, Justin Carroll turns away from the laptop orthodoxy, deploying instead a Fender Rhodes and an array of machines rescued from the dawn of the analogue age. This is a seated concert.

Fierce, amusing and mesmerising, Camille returns to Dublin for an extraordinarily rare, intimate performance. Always fearless, always emotional and never less than dramatically intense, tonight she delves into the repertoires of Jacques Brel, Nick Cave, Tom Waits, Kurt Weill and Radiohead. A festival favourite (Winner of ‘Best Spiegeltent Show’ in 2007 and 2009), Camille has continued to deliver stunning, sold-out, five star gigs worldwide, and this raw, acoustic set will be no different. Four on the FrinGe of Folk
Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh, Seán Óg, Petter Berndalen, Nic Gareiss
Four sonic explorers are bracing the edge of folk music in this extraordinary performance. With a reputation as one of Ireland’s most creative traditional musicians, Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh and his array of curious fiddles find new and wonderful soundscapes to traverse. Saxophonist Seán Óg also sits at a crossroads between free improvisation, avant-garde composition and contemporary jazz, creating notes that range from the delicate to the brash. Petter Berndalen takes all the corners of Swedish fiddle music and grafts them onto his snare drum to create new rhythmic contours. And adding a whole other element to this gathering, Nic Gareiss incorporates footwork vocabulary from a multitude of step dance styles to create beautiful sounds & textures with his feet. Like Sigur Rós bumping into Martin Hayes on a twisty mountain path. This is a standing concert.

Bursting with vigorous pop energy, this glacial electro outfit are explosive, unpredictable and very, very fun. Their first gig in a cave in the Faroe Islands (yup, really) led them to a riotous stage debut at Iceland’s Airwaves festival, and their wonderfully eclectic blend of digitised synth and electro-pop is influenced by everything from NKOTB to Rage Against the Machine. Featuring anything from 3 to 30 members, they’re fast gaining a reputation for ridiculously high energy, synthesiser soaked gigs, and you’ll find them featured on all the ‘ones to watch’ lists worth their salt. Ólöf Arnalds
AmiinA
Beautiful and beguiling, this solo songstress is gaining a strong following in her native country and beyond. An enchanting and unpredictably gregarious and charismatic stage presence, Arnalds is a classically trained violinist, composer and singer. Her much anticipated second solo album, Innundir Skinni, has captivated audiences with its charged minimalism and poignant, universal themes. Influenced by folk from across the globe, she delicately plucks at various string instruments onstage to accompany her lilting, otherworldly voice, which Björk, her most recent collaborator, described as belonging “somewhere between a child and an old woman”. Immensely personal and heartfelt, her lyrics and instrumentation effortlessly fuse to create her evocative melodies. Ethereal yet assured, this is one Icelander you won’t want to miss. “Reykjavik’s answer to Kate Bush”****Mojo “You may well fall in love” NME
Bending the rules of classical music to create their lush soundscapes, these purveyors of minimalist classical electro-pop bring their fragile magic to Dublin. Starting out as a string quartet accompanying Sigur Rós in 1999, Amiina have since been proving themselves as a musical force to be reckoned with. An eclectic array of instruments such as Celtic harps, glockenspiels, wine glasses, singing saws, synthesisers and toy bells all play a part in the creation of their twinkling, otherworldly reveries. Their newest, hotly awaited album is set to be released in Autumn of this year and follows 2007’s critically acclaimed debut, Kurr. Their only full length gig in Ireland this year, this is a chance to witness them create their revelatory, intricate moments of music, and hear exclusive new material.

F*ck My Life
Love happy, money happy, beauty happy, friends happy, sports happy, McDonald’s happy… Fuck My Life. What’s it really like being a teenager today? And how on earth do you become a happy one? What drives teenagers to profound sadness or extreme violence? Ireland has one of the highest teen suicide rates in Europe. Why is this? FML casts a spotlight on the lives of 15 young Corkonians in this blend of spoken word and film, true confessions and lies. Who is the funniest, most beautiful, most dangerous? Who will fall by the wayside? Who won’t live to see twenty? Who needs help? For everyone who has ever been a teenager. A co-production by Cork Midsummer Festival, CAMPO Gent, LIFT, Ulster Bank Belfast Festival at Queen’s and Everyman Palace Theatre Cork. Funded by Arts Council Ireland and a Small Arts Award from the Wellcome Trust. Contains strong language and sexually explicit material. Cork Midsummer Festival have stepped onto the international stage with this daring collaboration between Cork teenagers and renowned Belgian theatre artist Pol Heyvaert. The result is a brave and ambitious production that explores the phenomenon of teen suicide in Ireland.

Matthew P. Morris is exploring a new adventure. He’s hitching his heels high and daring to redress his first solo piece. A ‘he’ who transforms to ‘she’ in order to walk the wild side of a lopsided reality of assumed identity, he’s treading bare a silent world of desirable loneliness before finally surrendering to the natural order of serenity. A cycle of events; moments in time unravel unexpectedly to reveal where paths cross and people change our lives, often unsettling the ground beneath us. Shake it like a milkshake, moves that’ll groove … all creamy and dreamy. A song might be sung. The dance will be danced. And please for a moment let there be quiet...

There’s A Hole In My Heart That Goes All The Way To China
My Husband is a Spaceman
Mining the mysterious caverns of the human heart, this is an extraordinary live art multimedia piece. Combining visuals, movement and text, it is made up of many parts about holes that ultimately leaves one feeling whole. Carl Jung said, “I would rather be whole than be good”. This work digs down deep into the depths of loneliness and shame, but even in its darkest moments, the canary still sings. Stacy is an Artsadmin Associate Artist. “The most winning humorist was Stacy Makishi; funny yet incisive…a truly amazing performance.” The Independent
A multi-media solo show, this is the third part of an absorbing trilogy from an incredible live artist. A Japanese office lady is content with her single lifestyle until she encounters Robin, an English University fellow, in Tokyo. They fall in love, get married, and move to England. But married life is not what Robin expects and the eccentric Englishman takes to locking himself in a room upstairs every night. Derived from an old Japanese folk tale of love between a peasant and a crane, this is a love story loosely based on Kazuko’s experience of a cross-cultural relationship, loneliness and how to survive it. One of the most personal and affecting performers you are ever likely to see.

Expect laughter, tears and nostalgia in this sartorial expedition. The walls can’t talk but the dresses sure can. JERK
David Brooks, accomplice to serial killer Dean Corll in the murder of more than twenty boys in Texas during the seventies, has just discovered the art of puppetry while serving his life sentence in prison. His reconstruction of the horrific crimes using glove puppets is a crafted performance, presented to an audience of psychology students – you. Like nothing you have ever seen before, this re-imagining of a killer’s crimes bristles with savage brutality and horrifying violence. It is invariably strange and sombre, poetic and captivating. We don’t say this lightly: jerk will leave you stunned and shaken at the gruesome visual world you create around this deceptively stark set. Based on cult author Dennis Cooper’s novella of the same name. I programmed this show immediately after seeing it in Berlin. It’s the most gripping, shocking, gruesome and innovative theatre piece I’ve experienced in years. You must see it. festival director

An associate of Tim Crouch, he co-directed the award-winning plays ‘An Oak Tree’, ‘England’ and most recently ‘The Author’ and has been making simple solo work for theatre since 2001. A quiet protest for the strange world we live in, the next two days of everything is a performance about hope. It hopes we are going to be OK. Co-produced by BIT Teatergarasjen and Black Box Teater, supported by The Arts Council Norway and The Norwegian Embassy in Dublin. Quietly contemplative and persuasively subtle, a smith’s performance about oil, the environment and how these global issues relate to your life will leave you thinking about the small choices you make everyday and the large consequences that go with them. festival director

PAPER BOY + FRIENDS
Neighbours, terrorists, friends. Can the game go too far when we’re all still playing? The Paper Boy is fighting against his own extinction. He’s bending the rules, looking back and making accusations. Loud music, confessions, sex chat and satchels. He’s playing games with imaginative desperation. Frantic performance and live virtual design run in tandem as Engine13 race to provoke your senses. Be incensed and a little bit moved by a group of friends, some criminal acts, a sneaky twist and a 3D world made just for you. A collaboration between a Second Life designer and a very exciting young theatre director makes ABSOLUT Fringe very happy. THE WORK THE WORK
GREATEST HITS
Life, say Fitzgerald & Stapleton, is both absurd and alluring, a grotesque practical joke constantly pulling away chairs from under dignity and reason. Their delight in the details of human existence struggles with their conviction of its futility. Nothing is sane, reality is a hall of distorting mirrors reflecting the grimness of our own pretensions. A piece involving dance, spoken text and film, it also features choreography by Deborah Hay, Michael Klein, DD Dorvillier, Xavier LeRoy and Lucy Guerin. ‘a strange and strong enough experience to suggest that the power of art is in its capacity to puzzle rather than to please’ The New York Times Fitzgerald and Stapleton’s work is challenging, always brave and usually very funny too. Contains nudity and scenes of an explicit nature. Supported by Dance Ireland and Culture Ireland.
Greatest Hits is Operatic Electric sound theatre played on everything from a kettle to a drum machine. For nine months now the band has been busy rehearsing in a living room, teaching themselves to play instruments and write songs. This is dark DIY sound played by four astounding professional dancers, recently turned musicians. They have carefully crafted these original greatest hits for three special performances only. You Can Call me Frances are: Jessica Kennedy, Áine Stapleton, Emma Martin and Justine Cooper. Not only can they dance beautifully, they can also play music. Jessica, Emma, Aine and Justine are just too talented really. festival director

Cactus: The Seduction
Side-splitting comedy that is both irresistible love story and carnival of boundless imaginings. Phil wanders through the desert in search of true love, persistently hallucinating that he has an audience, in this surreal, ridiculously funny one-man show. The Butcher Babes
I ❤ Alice ❤ I
‘You can’t say me ma is racist; she is fucking fucking you. And I let you touch me…’ Farah Swaleh Noor was nobody until his headless and butchered body parts were discovered in the Dublin’s Royal Canal, where they had been dumped by the so-called Irish ‘Scissor Sisters’. This show gives the stage to the murdered Kenyan immigrant’s missing head and reunites it with his other body parts to tell the tale of how a night of drinks, drugs and sex led to his brutal murder and eventual dismemberment. It is not a true account of what happened, but a tragic-comic re-imagining of what might have been. WARNING: Not suitable for children and vegetarians. Contains scenes of a sexual nature, sort of. Written and Directed by Bisi Adigun. Bisi Adigun returns to the festival exploring a story that shocked Ireland from a unique, African, perspective
Alice and Alice are coming out... finally. This documentary piece is an unflinching and astonishingly personal love story that spans six decades. It is ‘Grey Gardens’ in Dublin. Two exceptional, opinionated women were spotted winking at each other in Crumlin Shopping Centre. Now they’re in a show ... reluctantly. Defying stereotype, they’re here to share with you something they’ve never dared before. A fresh, human and hilarious piece from new company HotForTheatre, I ❤ Alice ❤ I explores the monumental journey of a most unlikely couple. It will seduce you, it will move you, it will touch you … in all the right places. Supported by The Performance Corporation. A heartbreaking story of forbidden love in Dublin will remind you how many taboos still exist in Irish society.

MAXIMUM JOY
Shane Byrne left his SLEEPING BAG in the car again…
Wanna watch a girl trying to be in a show? It’s set in 1979, in 1990, in a warehouse, in the bedroom of your family home. A girl who’s not called Doireann Coady has gotten to the point where she’s crawling around your kitchen floor. You’re gonna have to kick her out because she is singing very loudly on your front lawn. It’s a struggle, a fight, it’s like playing an old record on repeat. It feels like a movement, a concert or a fire, like ripping up the curtains after a gaff party. You will definitely need a slice of bread to sober up afterwards. Supported by CREATE
Shane is a boy who is no longer a boy scout. He hasn’t climbed a mountain since he was 16. He can’t find his penknife. He seldom sees the sunrise and he’s feeling ging gang gooly gooly gooly gooly washed up. He needs to tell you about it. Last year’s Festival saw him take us to his family home and into his heart for his sold out, Spirit of the Fringe 2009 award nominated show—‘Group Therapy for One’. Come with him into the old. The old that has to be talked about before he can be new. To do that, he needs you.

WE ARE ALL IN THE GUTTER
Where am I? What is this place? Hitch a ride on our journey to anywhere in a show of extraordinary voyages, spaces and characters. Loaded with bags and baggage we trip along the road of landscape and memory. What have we bundled up? If we carry our world around with us in a suitcase what do we unpack? Bring a map and prepare to send postcards from the horizon of your imagination in this travelogue with a difference. Storytelling with many twists and turns but a good sense of direction, this is a performance for anyone who has ever gone on a journey, left home or tried to create a new one. Directed by Andy Crook (Articulate Anatomy Theatre Company). Recent graduates of IT Sligo team up with director Andy Crook to create this beautiful new physical ensemble piece.
The Noughties. Unaffordable housing, designer bags and career prospects beyond your wildest dreams. David Hare called it ‘the Decade of Looking Away’ - we thought that we could have it all. So what happens when we can no longer live up to our swollen expectations? We Are All In The Gutter looks at what it means to be of the privileged class when your stock has plummeted. I LOVE GUNS
Using words as weapons and weapons as words I Love Guns unleashes an explosive power play. A poetic joyride that turns the stage into a creative battlefield of violent verbalisation. Of suppression and rebellion. Strength and vulnerability. Love and power. ‘ I don’t want to hurt you / This is not about hurt / This is about touch / I want to touch you.’ With the shotgun held at point-blank, Gert-Jan Stam aims to restore the authority of the text. And once you shoot, it might get messy … Hitting Dublin fresh from its premiere at Prague Fringe, this is an international production by acclaimed Dutch playwright Gert-Jan Stam and Irish theatre maker Jody O’Neill. NEVER LOOK IN THE MIRROR WHEN YOU’RE DANCING
Does God hate sex? Should we let homophobic couples marry? And how does the Ku Klux Klan view President Obama? These are just a few of the questions the creator of sell out shows ‘Eco-Friendly Jihad’ and ‘Jesus: The Guantanamo Years’ will attempt to answer in this brand new production. On the night Barack Obama was elected US president, Abie exclusively interviewed the Ku Klux Klan live, scooping CNN, BBC and Fox in the process. With his trademark irreverent take on serious issues, join him on a comic expedition through prejudice and sexuality. “ One of Ireland’s most thought-provoking comedians” Galway City Tribune “A rising star” Time Magazine Abie Philbin Bowman has been using his sharp and acerbic wit to draw attention to world political issues for some time. He sells out wherever he goes, because he’s brilliant.
There’s me and these 2 ballroom dancers, and we’re going to tell you a story. It’s kind of a true story, about stuff that really happened to us, probably before you were born. No matter how hard I try, I can’t get the dancers to take their eyes off each other. It’s as if they’ve lost someone before, and won’t let it happen again. Come home to Sheffield with us for 3 lives in 30 minutes; lives forged from loss, love and the occasional foxtrot. Come and meet our makers of destiny. You will be introduced to The Three Fates - Clotho, Lachesis, Atropos as they spin, measure and cut the thread of life. Inspired by the Moirae, three Greek figures of destiny, The Spinner is a physical dance show that uses movement to express how these Gods work together. With live music on viola, this piece will transport you to a community of deities where dance becomes the means to construct human fate. An intimate performance, it reminds us we are all connected through the common thread of life.

Dance in Progress
This Is
A Study in Absence / A Study in Presence
This is in the making. This is where we find meaning. This is what it is. This is the story of how we came to be in this space together now … with you. This is here. This is what we make of it. Ireland’s leading integrated dance company Croí Glan are excited to have the opportunity to work with renowned award winning choreographer Adam Benjamin (cofounder of CanDoCo) and super virtuosic disabled dancer James O’ Shea (recent winner of BBC3’s Dancing on Wheels) for this twenty minute piece.
Two unique performers from Ireland, Nick Bryson and Eimhin Shortt take a refreshing look at our perception of dance and juggling. With unquenchable determination to compare the corresponding appeals of each artform, they give a check-up to a patient in need of assessment, a last-ditch treatment and psychological counselling. Along the way there are some rather surprising exhibitions of skill and lyrical beauty. From a young company described by The Irish Times as ‘Simple, clever and hilarious’, this new performance is a highly original contemporary dance work that questions its own accessibility to the audience as it takes place.
These are work in progress studio showings.

ALL THIS AND A HILL OF BEANS
How does a witty, loudmouth Yank with two degrees and an overinflated ego end up slinging lattés on Harcourt Road? Through monologue, improv and the dark art of foam ornamentation, barista Jenna Logan lays bare the hidden side of café work and in the process tries to reconcile the gap between where she thought she’d be and where she is. A show for anyone who suspects that their true potential may not yet be fully realised. Directed by filmmaker Conor Horgan, the show takes place in an actual coffee shop and coffees will be provided; decaf served with a side of mockery. THE ROOM IN THE TOWER Part of Roger Doyle’s latest composition series, this is cinema for the ear. A soundtrack for an imaginary film, it reveals a horror story based on a recurring nightmare. In the dimly lit room of a haunted house in the early 20th century, a story unfolds through recorded dialogue, electronic sounds and the ethereal live vocals of Vyvienne Long, with Doyle on piano. A tale that will linger long after you’ve witnessed it. Scripted by Carlo Gebler. Ticket price includes access to an exclusive Room In The Tower music download by Roger Doyle. The Godfather of the experimental Irish music scene takes the stage after a long absence in the spooky surrounds of the Kevin Barry Room. festival director

But due to lax parole laws and moderately good behaviour they’ve been allowed out to present this latest offering, aimed specifically at insomniacs, late risers and the work shy. Set in the aftermath of a local geo/ bio incident and drawing inspiration from one of Shakespeare’s moodiest characters, they present a story of Love, Debt and The Loving Dead. An exciting visceral comedy – expect quantum entanglement, Rube Goldberg Machines, IEDs and Community Service. THE BRIDAL SOLUTION
LANEWAY
Seeking collaborators in search of new ritual, free of Catholic reverence and stifling, institutionalised thinking. A busking bridezilla will terrorise engagement ring shoppers at various jewellers throughout the week. Come week’s end, an explosive homage to the artist, Niki de St. Phalle – involving paintballing and a wedding dress – will take place in the city centre. Join this AWOL bride as she attempts to re-invent the fantasy and the virginal phallacy of the conventional Catholic bride and all she upholds. Join this creative riot, this joyous renunciation, this colourful celebration of love from the creator of 2009 festival hit ‘Madame Butterfly’. Donations gratefully received from rioteers and innocent bystanders alike. Aideen McDonald shocked, awed and wowed with last year’s ‘Madame Butterfly’, performed in a shop front on Crane Lane. Make sure to catch this bridezilla-with-a-difference in all the usual, bride-like haunts of Dublin city.

INFORMATION TOOLBOX Irish Theatre Institute’s 5th annual Information Toolbox, a key networking event, is produced specifically with the needs of new and emerging theatre and dance companies/artists in mind. Information Toolbox has evolved to also provide an ideal environment for new and emerging Irish companies/artists to promote shows, pitch work to venues and festivals and begin dialogue with key funding agencies and support organisations. This event has evolved to also provide the participants with an opportunity to meet and engage with international organisations and presenters. The objective is for these companies and artists to investigate the possibility of re-mounting their shows following ABSOLUT Fringe or, indeed, to create new work in the future. ITI is delighted to partner with ABSOLUT Fringe and Fishamble: the New Play Company on the first ever Show in a Bag initiative. Information Toolbox is an ideal platform for these five new small-scale artist led shows to be promoted to presenting venues and festivals around Ireland. Festival and RTÉ called for applications from all kinds of artists who engage with the world we live in through science, politics, sound, images, documentary, community and beyond to take part in RadioActive. After a massive response to the call out, twenty projects were selected to go through to a short radio production crash course in June with RTÉ producer Ronan Kelly. Writers, photographers, dancers, theatre makers, visual artists, composers all went back to school, knuckled down and hammered out some incredible all-new radio ideas. These final ten projects came out of that course.

absolut fringe awards 2010 Every year hundreds of artists, makers and companies come out in their droves to craft the most exciting, most original, most inventive work that you’ll see anywhere. Often this work is made with nothing more than a tiny budget, and a sackload of favours. And, of course, enough energy and creativity to spark another volcanic eruption. As a small tribute to these powerhouses, the ABSOLUT Fringe Awards are a chance to recognise and celebrate the best of the best, and to spur them on to greater heights.
Spirit of the Fringe Commissioning Award in association with Project Arts Centre A highly prestigious award that combines a commission to present work in Project Arts Centre in next year’s ABSOLUT Fringe, along with €4,000 to get the show up and running. This is the golden ticket into the 2011 festival! Fishamble New Writing Award Presented to the best play by a new or emerging Irish (or Irish-based) playwright premiered during ABSOLUT Fringe, the Fishamble New Writing Award includes the prize of a scholarship place on one of Fishamble’s acclaimed playwriting courses, dramaturgical support and a stipend towards the playwright’s next play, generously sponsored by Fishamble: The New Play Company. In the consideration of this award, the idea of new writing is interpreted broadly and ABSOLUT Fringe artists have been encouraged to consider submitting new works in the area of dance, performance art, music, multi-author, post-dramatic works and so on. Previous recipients of this coveted award are Shona McCarthy for “Married to the Sea”, Elaine Murphy for “Little Gem”, and Grace Dyas for “Rough”. Bewley’s Café Theatre ‘Little Gem’ Award Bewley’s Café Theatre is Ireland’s foremost presenter of Lunchtime Theatre and is delighted and proud to continue to sponsor the Bewley’s Café Theatre ‘Little Gem’ Award for the most exciting show under an hour in length presented at this year’s Fringe. This festival is for you. It is your challenge and your sanctuary. It is also your right. Without it, and all the ways it makes you feel, Ireland will become a poorer place. Its cost to the state is modest, but its worth is great. It’s also fragile, and cannot endure further cuts. As Budget 2011 approaches, let your elected representatives know just how valuable it is to you. Visit www.ncfa.ie to find out what you can do.

In 16 years, we’ve grown to become Ireland’s largest and most exciting multidisciplinary festival. We’ve attracted hundreds of thousands of people into the unlikeliest of venues. We’ve provoked, amused, astounded, enraged, inspired, entertained and defied expectations. We’ve been a springboard for careers, national and international tours and watched Fringe productions win countless awards. And it’s all thanks to you. If you’ve danced in our tents, switched off your mobile before a show, been brave enough to take part or hoped they wouldn’t pick on you, then you’re a part of the Fringe. We hope you will help us continue to entertain and inspire you by ensuring our financial stability and strengthening your involvement with us by becoming a festival Patron. Patrons will be smothered with love, and acknowledged in our brochure, on our website, and in our Box Office as a Festival Patron.

What we’d do with €250… — Put a roof over, and a bed under, the heads of 6 visiting artists for three nights during the festival. — Cover the cost of distributing our annual brochure in Dublin 1, 2, and 7. — Subsidise an artist from the festival to take part in ‘The Next Stage’ where they are mentored by top national and international theatre makers. — Provide a budget for 5 Facebook ads to run for 2.7 days, reaching up to 100,000 people. — Pay for the rental of a rehearsal studio for one week to allow companies develop ideas before applying to the festival. — Hire a P.A. system or a portaloo for an outdoor event. — Reward a talented actor by covering half of the ‘Best Male Performer’ award. — Get an artist to Dublin (and send home) on an airplane. — Post 609.7 postcards onto the doormats of our lovely audience to announce our Box Office opening. — Hire a paramedic at a festival site for 12 hours. Just in case. — Provide a baby grand piano for a pianist to play on for 2 nights.
