4 Welcome
WELCOME
2012 marks a very special 18th birthday celebration for the festival. Far from taking on the responsibilities of adulthood with sobriety and meek submission, our 18th birthday sees us dreaming big, living large and losing the keys to this glorious city of Dublin. We want to play, we want to fight, we want to cry, we want to lose it all and find it again. We want to make dark and thrilling discoveries and think about a brighter future. We want to define ourselves as something other than what has come before us. We want to experience the exquisite pain of growing up in a joyous celebration, with the city as our mise-en-scène. We want to occupy your imagination. While we celebrate 18 years of ground-breaking theatre, dance, music, comedy, spectacle, visual, live and public art we look forward, as always, to the shock of the new and the thrill of the next, never forgetting our place as the enfant terrible of the Irish performing arts. This year’s festival features a ground-breaking programme strand for Irish audiences in The Playground — a collection of some of the best immersive and game-based performances on the world stage right now, as well as fresh new work by Irish artists. I am delighted to present a season of new work from some of the most exciting companies to come out of Galway in recent years as part of West Coast Cool. I really encourage you to check this work out. You may not know the artists yet, but you want to be one of the people who said you saw them here first. fringefest.com · 1850 374 643

BE OUR FRIEND! We are 18 this year, you know what that means…Time to start saving! We have a 21st birthday party to plan. But we need your help. By donating to our birthday fund you can help us throw the greatest 21st Birthday Party this city has ever seen! So if we have provoked, inspired, astounded or even enraged you over the last 18 years then this is a party for you! Cairo, Bali, Copenhagen. The world is a playground in this music video of our lives. A dazzling group of bright young things is reunited. It’s a celebration. But the one person who holds them together vanishes as the festivities soar. A dreadful act and a sordid secret — the party has to end sometime. And the mirror ball whispers: Disappear here. Disappear here. Producing powerhouse THISISPOPBABY (Alice in Funderland, Trade, The Year of Magical Wanking) present a fractured parable of a world where everything is available but nothing ever satisfies. Just when is enough, enough?
Don’t sit back. Don’t wait for the darkness to descend, and most of all don’t be passive! The Playground programme is all about immersing yourself, getting involved and being an active participant. We’ve brought some of the best participatory experiences from around the world to Dublin for you, so dress warm, wear comfortable shoes and don’t be shy!

We predict a riot as the Rubberbandits make their return to ABSOLUT Fringe. Last time we saw these guys it was before anyone knew they had a horse outside or 10 million hits on Youtube. Following a string of sold out shows from New York to Newcastle, Blindboy Boatclub and Mr. Chrome are back on Irish soil and ready to party. This plastic fantastic duo will bring their funny, filthy, comedy rave to the heart of the capital in a gig that will have the whole town talking. This outrageous live show combining music sketches and on-stage insanity is a definite sell-out so book your ticket as soon as possible!
From our western shores comes a new breed of theatre. Across the next five shows listed you will find some of the most exciting new voices in Irish performance. They do not share an aesthetic or thematic focus. What they do share, in our view, is an attitude, and one that is wholly different from their PALEr counterparts. The West is definitely awake.

BRB (Be Right Back) Cyberspace is not very old. But Irish
mythology tells of another place where time is suspended. There, everyone is young and beautiful. This is a combination of cyberperformance and live action that uses one of our best-known legends as its starting-point. Narrative is fractured as Yeats meets the world of ones and zeroes. Spectators and audience ride white horses across the cybersurface. Together and apart, they play in multiple spaces, the private realm of the imagination and the blue light world of the internet. And a magical island, of course! We can each be in more than one place at once. But can we be here and now, together? And for how long? @dublinfringe · #afringe · facebook.com/absolutfringe

ChemisTry We know that there is something in the air. But what is this ‘something’? Perhaps these things are hard to explain rationally because they relate to our feelings, instincts, emotions and senses. Chemistry: “sparks” between people, in relationships. Where exactly does this “chemistry” come from? What can it lead us to? Can we influence it? A tale told through movement, gesture and dance wrapped in music — this is a story that questions our irrationality.

The Life and Sort of Death oF Eric Argyle
Eric’s having a distinctly bad Sunday. It’s late, he’s still in his pyjamas, a room full of people are staring at him, and he died at 11.42am, two days ago. A problem that people don’t seem too receptive to. The Scotsman Fringe First winners (Edinburgh 2011) make their ABSOLUT Fringe debut with a story, equal parts tragic and comic, about midnight funerals, misspelled headstones and about the eponymous Eric Argyle, a man who barely lived enough to have regrets. @dublinfringe · #afringe · facebook.com/absolutfringe

Broadening “I’ve been looking into you. In a way, this all revolves
around you. I believe it will be you who will push this experiment into true revelation.” The premise was simple, a no-brainer. A matter of playing house. Like kids. They would be looked after. Every need catered for. Just a few days of their time in the name of science. They couldn’t have known what would happen. They didn’t set out to do the things they did. It wasn’t their fault. Witness a group of volunteers take part in a social experiment and watch as it slowly spins out of control. fringefest.com · 1850 374 643

In 2009 Dan Canham (Kneehigh, DV8, Punchdrunk, Fabulous Beast) made a film in a rotting, dilapidated theatre in Limerick. Using that film as source material, this original piece of dance-theatre is an eloquent, heartbreaking elegy for a lost and ruined theatre. A performance of fragments of memories, of wild nights and longdisappeared communities. It evokes the life of a once-mighty building that asks what is left when a theatre closes its doors to the public? “Dan Canham raising ghosts in the exquisite and evocative dance theatre journey through memory.” — Lyn Gardner, Guardian. Find yourself without sleep, eye-up strangers in the street. Face caked in muck, smacked with a rope, screaming till our heads spin off. Smashed paint in grass, got dirty knees, conducting rituals on your housing estate green. Radiating magic, laughing, hissing, we mingle with the night and cry; it’s alright. We attempt honesty, we attempt trust, we attempt vulnerability, we attempt forgiveness. We attempt survival. We risk everything. We are constantly open and ready for anything. A shamanic trip seeking truth and necessity in suspended territory of uninhibited youth, energy, physical ability and ropes. PaperDolls present Constellations, a visceral and bold statement of intent which divides our eternal truths from the superficial variations.
THE ABSOLUT FRINGE AWARDS
exist to recognise, reward and celebrate the hard work and talent on display in the festival each year. They are a small but heartfelt tribute to some of the hundreds of festival makers and doers who seem to be able to draw on a reservoir of bottomless energy and passion to create some of the most exciting and original work any of us see from one end of the year to the next. You complete us. More power to your elbow.

Irish Theatre Institute’s Information Toolbox is a key networking event ABSOLUT Fringe participants can’t afford to miss! Back for its 7th year, this tailor-made energetic event is produced specifically to meet the needs of new and emerging theatre and dance companies/artists. The Toolbox allows Irish companies and artists to promote and pitch shows to venue and festival directors and also begin a dialogue with the key funding agencies. In recent years, and in response to demand, ITI also invited a number of hand-picked representatives of international presenting organisations so that companies and artists can explore the possibility of re-mounting their shows abroad.

SUPPORTING ARTISTS YEAR ROUND
122
Dublin Fringe Festival identifies, curates and nurtures emerging artists. FRINGE LAB provides year round practical and artistic support, responding to their needs, and indeed those of independent, more established artists. There is huge demand for these supports which are pivotal in shaping the work of a new generation of Irish performing artists, amplifying their presence on the world stage. These artists’ work is devised, demanding collaboration. As the arts sector diverges from individual companies each with its own administration, at a basic level, professional performing artists need somewhere to work. We provide that space, in our new building equipped with two large studios (Studio 1 and Studio 2), a free, drop-in office for artists (complete with wifi, printer & phone) and a writer’s room, The CELL), backed up by access to our own in-house expertise, and an ongoing schedule of workshops, masterclasses and resource sharing activities. To find out more about FRINGE LAB visit fringefest.com/lab
