Formal innovation, weird-out-wild experiences and just having a great time are hallmarks of every Fringe. Fringe 2016 is about big nights out. Spiegeltent is back in all its glittery glory. This time we’ve got the keys to Dublin’s favourite garden in the lush and historic environs of Merrion Square. GET US! A site this beautiful calls for a spectacular show. We’ve got the world premiere from the toast of the town. THISISPOPBABY celebrates their 10th phenomenal year with their most ambitious and entertaining show yet. RIOT is going to fire on all cylinders – siren songs, drag royalty, jockstraps, hurling helmets and sizzling spoken word. A show this powerful, inspired and ferocious is not to be missed. It’s not just RIOT that’s rich with action and glamour. Australia’s Hot Brown Honey offers cabaret with a political pulse. From the people who brought you Briefs and co-created by the stupendous Lisa Fa’alafi and Busty Beatz, Hot Brown Honey delivers scorching number after number of burlesque, beat box and banging tunes. Bring your friends; you’ll torch tyranny and burn up the dance floor. Comedy maven and RuPaul’s Drag Race winner Jinkx Monsoon and her dashing companion Major Scales unearth their favourite pop tunes with The Vaudevillians. Get up close and personal with leading comics, take in sensational gigs from your favourite Irish indie bands and revel in experiential Spiegel parties. Fringe artists will investigate ideas of consequence and possibility, and bring us stories bigger than ourselves. Fiction comes to the forefront this year via new ways of story-telling and radical reimaginings of the traditional ones. We asked artists to get intrepid, to bring us their most urgent ideas, concepts and stories and to do it from the pit of their gut. They’re surpassing all expectations and are taking us places we’ve never been. The artists of Fringe 2016 are giving us idealists corrupted by power, examinations of politics and radicalism, couples dealing with cyberethics and sexploits gone awry. These shows give your heart and soul a workout as we witness how it all plays out. We’ve got an icon in our midst – New York underground’s legendary Penny Arcade will battle against the gentrification of our souls, in a copresentation with the Abbey Theatre on the Peacock stage. Also at the Peacock, choreographer Aoife McAtamney leads an ensemble of spirited performers in Age of Transition. Collapsing Horse assembles their biggest ensemble yet to retell the Roman epic, The Aeneid in their signature playful and high

dramatic style. Artist Aoibheann Greenan ritualises Wagner in a visual maelstrom of bondage and raveinspired totems, strobe lights and gold lamé at the RHA. We’ve gone crazy for talkshows – Alison Spittle, Lords of Strut and Dick Walsh each make the format their own. It’s a city takeover too. Yacht clubs, comedy bars, galleries, the Docklands and your favourite Temple Bar theatres come alive for Dublin’s landmark festival. We’ve been busy strengthening our network with exciting cultural organisations abroad. We’re delighted to be collaborating with major cultural partners in Greece, Germany, Lithuania and Portugal as part of a network funded by the Goethe-Institut. Co-producers of Brokentalkers’ new work This Beach, the GoetheInstitut has enabled us to bring Cláudia Dias’ searing Monday: Watch Out for the Right! to the National Stadium. She’s putting her dukes up in a fight you don’t want to miss. On the Canadian front, Fringe has found a kindred spirit in the vibrant SummerWorks Performance Festival – Toronto’s leading independent arts festival. With the support of the Ireland Park Foundation, we’re proud to host maverick artist Liz Peterson with her travelogue meets dance meets comedy Performance About a Woman and see Irish artists head off to SummerWorks in Toronto this August. We’re so thankful for the stalwart support and close partnership with our core funders the Arts Council / An Chomhairle Ealaíon, Dublin City Council Arts 5 Office and Fáilte Ireland. A special thank you to Dublin City Council Events Office for helping us bring our Spiegeltent to life in Merrion Square. Clenched fists, full contact, one thing is certain: Cláudia and Jaime are going for the mouth, literally and metaphorically. The first of choreographer Cláudia Dias’ seven performances to be created over the next seven years reconstructs a boxing match. Part of a community that has been forced to the mat many times, they will shed blood, sweat and tears as they pummel each other with arguments and reveal enlightening truths. The feeling of solidarity between peers, reinforced in combat when they recognise each other as equals, stands in contrast to the oppression they free themselves from through fighting. From these opposing forces comes enough friction to move from words to action.

A private beach inhabited by a family; a European family. They are the owners of the beach. The beach has been ‘in their family’ for generations. The family celebrate a wedding, a union between two sides; each of whom can offer something to the other. Security, prosperity, progeny. During the wedding celebration a stranger arrives on the shore of their beach. The family must decide how to deal with this stranger. Walking through the Dublin Docklands, you’ll feel it. Amongst the glass-cloaked monoliths and wastelands of unused development sites, you’ll see it. In the low drone of the street-side loudspeakers and security cameras, you’ll hear it. This show is not about how the bubble burst. It’s about what we felt after we heard the crash. Through music, visuals and dance a cast of seven performers bring to the harsh light of day what our bodies knew that our mouths couldn’t quite say. The venue is a short walk from the meeting point. Utopia Ltd. is an off-site collaborative theatre performance, inspired by the biography of Roger Casement. It explores flawed and flawless heroes, a world mapped by international trade and the optimistic impossibility that tonight we will change the world. But is there anything we can all agree on? And who are we responsible for? And aren’t ideals that people would die for too dangerous?

EUROPOLY is a project in which artists document the new rules of the game since the financial crisis rattled Europe. Through films and performances, they tell the stories of how the European financial crisis has stamped our everyday lives. Committed, always subjective and very specific, it is about seeking: in supermarket checkouts, in Irish villages and Portuguese clubs. EUROPOLY looks forward. And invites everyone to butt in.

In 2016, Tiger Dublin Fringe participates in EUROPOLY with two exhilarating shows – This Beach (page 32) and Monday: Watch Out for the Right! (page 30) – as well as a series of seven short films exploring a transforming Europe. BLEED Bottlenote

BLEED animates an abandoned Georgian house, creating a reverberating, pulsing space. The audience is led from room to room each occupied by a musician, guided by light design which highlights the patina and atmosphere of the house. A live collaborative tape piece is used, a technique of recording each performance and replaying that recording throughout the house as the next performance is occurring. With ten performances this creates an increasingly rich, layered ambiance where past decisions inform subsequent ones, with each musician adding to the composition over five days turning the entire four storey house into a huge instrument.

Annually hundreds of artists bring their intelligence, heart, vision and drive to projects at the festival. They inspire us. The Awards honour and acknowledge some of the stand-outs in this year’s festival. Best Production Award Presented to the show, production or event that has it all, displaying excellence in every area of production, design, performance, concept and execution. This award acknowledges the enormous work and talent that is poured into presenting work at the festival and honours the comprehensive production. 2015’s winner was Agrippina by Handel presented by Irish Youth Opera in a coproduction with Northern Ireland Opera in association with the Irish Chamber Orchestra and the Lime Tree Theatre. Best Design Award Presented for outstanding lighting, sound, scenic, projection, costume or overall design. The 2015 winner was Moira Brady Averill and Isadora Epstein for Flemish Proverbs. Best Performers Award Two of the festival’s best performers will take home this much soughtafter accolade from a field of up to ten nominees. 2015’s winners were Ben Sullivan in It Folds (Brokentalkers/ junk ensemble) and Liadain Herriott in Liminal. Best Ensemble Award Introduced in 2014, this award recognises the ensemble as the standout – the key and driving action behind a project or show. 2015’s winner was Behind the Dark by Loosysmokes.

Judge’s Choice Award Instituted in 2014, the Judges’ Choice award recognises a project, contributor, experience or Fringe event that defies categorisation and is simply too good to pass by unheralded. The 2015 winner was Object Piggy by Dying Breeds. Fishamble New Writing Award Honouring the best play by a new or emerging Irish (or Ireland-based) playwright premiered during Tiger Dublin Fringe, this award includes dramaturgical support as appropriate, for instance, a scholarship place on one of Fishamble’s acclaimed playwriting courses and/or support through the New Play Clinic for the playwright’s next play, generously supported by Fishamble: The New Play Company. The idea of new writing is interpreted broadly to include new works in the area of dance, performance art, music, multi-author, post-dramatic works and so on.
