Tiger Dublin Fringe 2016 is the boldest, wildest and most spectacular yet. This edition is going to be fabled – you’ll want to say you were there. It’s a knock out sixteen days full of events that will give you indelible, powerful and magical experiences. fringefest.com | 1850 374 643
We’re busting up taboos, pushing boundaries. This is where trends get set, where new styles of work and ideas are born. The radicals and experimentalists, the artists whose projects just don’t fit in the box, the crafters, the grafters, the misfits and the clarion voices thrive at Tiger Dublin Fringe. So do your favourite faces and some of the country’s most loved acts. This is the festival where artists make their mark. Formal innovation, weird-out-wild experiences and just having a great time are hallmarks of every Fringe. Fringe 2016 is about big nights out. Spiegeltent is back in all its glittery glory. This time we’ve got the keys to Dublin’s favourite garden in the lush and historic environs of Merrion Square. GET US! A site this beautiful calls for a spectacular show. We’ve got the world premiere from the toast of the town. THISISPOPBABY celebrates their 10th phenomenal year with their most ambitious and entertaining show yet. RIOT is going to fire on all cylinders – siren songs, drag royalty, jockstraps, hurling helmets and sizzling spoken word. A show this powerful, inspired and ferocious is not to be missed. It’s not just RIOT that’s rich with action and glamour. Australia’s Hot Brown Honey offers cabaret with a political pulse. From the people who brought you Briefs and co-created by the stupendous Lisa Fa’alafi and Busty Beatz, Hot Brown Honey delivers scorching number after number of burlesque, beat box and banging tunes. Bring your friends; you’ll torch tyranny and burn up the dance floor. Comedy maven and RuPaul’s Drag Race winner Jinkx Monsoon and her dashing companion Major Scales unearth their favourite pop tunes with The Vaudevillians. Get up close and personal with leading comics, take in sensational gigs from your favourite Irish indie bands and revel in experiential Spiegel parties. Fringe artists will investigate ideas of consequence and possibility, and bring us stories bigger than ourselves. Fiction comes to the forefront this year via new ways of story-telling and radical reimaginings of the traditional ones. We asked artists to get intrepid, to bring us their most urgent ideas, concepts and stories and to do it from the pit of their gut. They’re surpassing all expectations and are taking us places we’ve never been. The artists of Fringe 2016 are giving us idealists corrupted by power, examinations of politics and radicalism, couples dealing with cyberethics and sexploits gone awry. These shows give your heart and soul a workout as we witness how it all plays out. We’ve got an icon in our midst – New York underground’s legendary Penny Arcade will battle against the gentrification of our souls, in a copresentation with the Abbey Theatre on the Peacock stage. Also at the Peacock, choreographer Aoife McAtamney leads an ensemble of spirited performers in Age of Transition. Collapsing Horse assembles their biggest ensemble yet to retell the Roman epic, The Aeneid in their signature playful and high
dramatic style. Artist Aoibheann Greenan ritualises Wagner in a visual maelstrom of bondage and raveinspired totems, strobe lights and gold lamé at the RHA. We’ve gone crazy for talkshows – Alison Spittle, Lords of Strut and Dick Walsh each make the format their own. It’s a city takeover too. Yacht clubs, comedy bars, galleries, the Docklands and your favourite Temple Bar theatres come alive for Dublin’s landmark festival. We’ve been busy strengthening our network with exciting cultural organisations abroad. We’re delighted to be collaborating with major cultural partners in Greece, Germany, Lithuania and Portugal as part of a network funded by the Goethe-Institut. Co-producers of Brokentalkers’ new work This Beach, the GoetheInstitut has enabled us to bring Cláudia Dias’ searing Monday: Watch Out for the Right! to the National Stadium. She’s putting her dukes up in a fight you don’t want to miss. On the Canadian front, Fringe has found a kindred spirit in the vibrant SummerWorks Performance Festival – Toronto’s leading independent arts festival. With the support of the Ireland Park Foundation, we’re proud to host maverick artist Liz Peterson with her travelogue meets dance meets comedy Performance About a Woman and see Irish artists head off to SummerWorks in Toronto this August. We’re so thankful for the stalwart support and close partnership with our core funders the Arts Council / An Chomhairle Ealaíon, Dublin City Council Arts 5 Office and Fáilte Ireland. A special thank you to Dublin City Council Events Office for helping us bring our Spiegeltent to life in Merrion Square. Our three year title partnership with Tiger Beer has grown from strength to strength – this year, Tiger Beer has raised the bar yet again in their support of Fringe and independent Irish arts. As ever, we’re proud to share their stripes. This line-up is phenomenal. Diverse, compelling, magical moments abound. There’s something for everyone. Twice or three times over. There are artists you know and love making huge leaps, making their next and best thing. You’ll get acquainted with new voices, new talent, new combinations of makers from across disciplines. Fringe is the kind of festival where you can always hedge your bets; you’re certain to get bravery, quality, ambition. It’s the festival where you jump into the fray along with the hundreds of artists who will thrill Dublin this September. Fringe is made for adventurous types. The kind of person who likes to think big, laugh themselves sick and leave it all on the dance floor. The kind of person who hashes it out after the applause with mates, gets swept up by romance and won over by grit. That’s a lot of people in Dublin. That’s most certainly, definitely you. Here’s your Fringe. Enjoy!

Mad, risqué and uniquely eccentric. Critically acclaimed, award-winning Gaulier-trained clown, Trygve Wakenshaw presents his beautifully strange stream-of-consciousness idiocy in Nautilus. His hilarious hit physical comedies consistently sell out at festivals around the world. Nautilus is the third and final instalment in the Underwater Trilogy of solo-shows with aquatic titles (Kraken, Squidboy). It’s the biggest and most daring, exploring both the form of mime and asking why we have an imagination: what is its function? Perhaps we dream so we can make the world a better place.

RuPaul’s Drag Race winner Jinkx Monsoon and her cabaret co-star Major Scales star in bawdy, rowdy, raucous musical comedy The Vaudevillians. The impossible premise? The Vaudevillians, a fictional 1920s duo, were victims of a devastating avalanche and buried under two tons of sleet and snow, instantly freezing them alive. Thawing out nearly a century later, they discover that pop artists have stolen their music and passed it off as their own – and they’re not going to stand for it. Wigs will fly as they perform hits from the likes of Janis Joplin and Gloria Gaynor in the style of Cole Porter and Irving Berlin. Vintage cabaret with a twist of drag. Event subject to licence. Monday: Watch Out for the Right! Cláudia Dias Lisbon
fringefest.com | 1850 374 643
31
Clenched fists, full contact, one thing is certain: Cláudia and Jaime are going for the mouth, literally and metaphorically. The first of choreographer Cláudia Dias’ seven performances to be created over the next seven years reconstructs a boxing match. Part of a community that has been forced to the mat many times, they will shed blood, sweat and tears as they pummel each other with arguments and reveal enlightening truths. The feeling of solidarity between peers, reinforced in combat when they recognise each other as equals, stands in contrast to the oppression they free themselves from through fighting. From these opposing forces comes enough friction to move from words to action.

This Beach Brokentalkers Dublin 33
A private beach inhabited by a family; a European family. They are the owners of the beach. The beach has been ‘in their family’ for generations. The family celebrate a wedding, a union between two sides; each of whom can offer something to the other. Security, prosperity, progeny. During the wedding celebration a stranger arrives on the shore of their beach. The family must decide how to deal with this stranger. A response to the current refugee crisis gripping Europe and the notion of sovereignty of one people over a piece of land; and the lengths people will go to bar entry to their dominion. Presented as part of EUROPOLY at Tiger Dublin Fringe in cooperation with the Goethe Institut-Irland. Co-production: Münchner Kammerspiele/EUROPOLY and Goethe-Institut Irland in collaboration with Onassis Cultural-Centre (Athens), Sirenos – Vilnius International Theatre Festival, Teatro Maria Matos (Lisbon) and Tiger Dublin Fringe. Developed at FRINGE LAB.

Written by Stacey Gregg Directed by Sophie Motley Dublin Mark and Violet have run away from the technologyobsessed reality to raise their future child closer to nature. No enhancements, no bionic superlimbs, no shopping for perfect embryos. They want everything, from their flesh to their love to be real. But there’s no love without fear of loss. So will you get old with me? Stacey Gregg (winner Irish Times Theatre Awards Best New Play 2015) examines the boundaries of our faith in science. Turned by Sophie Motley into a digital spectacle with visceral audio visual design, an unsettlingly funny, bitter love letter to the future. Contains strong lighting effects. Bite Me Joanne McNally
This is the story of Joanne’s amaaaaaaazing diet. She didn’t just lose weight though; she lost jobs, friends and fellas, but she didn’t care because she could wear bangles as belts and that’s all that mattered. Then one day, over her morning carrot, Joanne realised she’d lost her mind. Turns out it was pinned to a lost property board up in space, enjoying the view and its new found freedom. Trying to entice it back became the hardest, funniest, greatest and weirdest time of her life. Directed by Una McKevitt.

Wrongheaded Liz Roche Company
Bringing together dance, film and spoken word poetry, Wrongheaded - a dancing body’s response to the 8th amendment. This new film / performance piece sees award-winning choreographer Liz Roche collaborating with an exceptional cast of dancers, spoken word poet Elaine Feeny and film director Mary Wycherley. Constantly at odds with each other while being caught in a relationship of frustrated repetition and ritual, the performers in film and live performance find ways to physicalise the undercurrent of desperation that Irish women face today around choices for their own bodies.

Double Bill Hope Hunt Oona Doherty Belfast
41
Oona Doherty performs a distillation of the Male. Thumping sweaty theatre. Dance as virtuosic states, heaving lungs shout in the dark. Doherty takes you through a dirty Europe, on a shared nervous system. This is a physical expression of the place between the flesh and the soul. Hope Hunt is an attempt to deconstruct the stereotype of the concrete disadvantaged male, and raise it up into a Caravaggio bright white limbo. It looks to make the smicks, the spides, the hoods, the gypsies, the knackers, into the birds of paradise. It is a hunt for hope. Produced by Katie McCann. With thanks to Neil Brown original hunter. Supported by the British Council, Prime Cut Productions and The MAC (Belfast).

George Bush and Children co-presented by Dick Walsh Theatre and Pan Pan
Topical talkshows are spontaneous speech-acts. Kind of. Repeat them verbatim in a theatre, and you see that they are theatre. Sophisticated and very effective. But a form of theatre that Shakespeare could never have dreamed of. Or even Bertolt Brecht. Energy, death, the truth, surfing, speedos, sex, history, politics and the meaning of life. Everything you could want is touched upon. And even though nothing new is being said here (we’re just repeating what’s already been said); you should come to this show. The same thing is happening in every other theatre right now anyway, isn’t it?

The Aeneid Collapsing Horse Dublin
Collapsing Horse bring The Aeneid to life with their own brand of wit, imagination and indelible theatre magic. This ancient Latin epic tells the story of the people who fled a burning Troy to create the city of Rome. It’s not a bad story...for a piece of propaganda. Within it lies the foundation myth of the Roman people from which they derived their identity, and the Emperor Augustus established his divine authority. In a time of pageantry and remembrance in Ireland, this legendary tale is a celebration of myths and their complex relationship to the truth. Supported by the Arts Council / An Chomhairle Ealaíon. Breaks Bez Kinte
“How is it possible to kill someone without a reason? I don’t know, but I didn’t have a reason.” There’s an angel on a killing spree in the city of Bremen. For more than a decade she systematically poisons everyone in her life: parents, children, lovers and friends. As the body count mounts, she layers herself in thirteen corsets, creating a dangerous illusion of beauty. This theatre piece devised by Erin Gilgen, Emma Hughes, Naomi Faughnan and Louisa Sanfey, circles the mysteries of an incredible true story about the limits of what a woman can take. Sometimes, when you can’t bend anymore, you break.

Penny Arcade is New York’s undisputed queen of the underground – an Andy Warhol Factory Superstar in the 1960s and a contemporary of Patti Smith and Debbie Harry. Driven by her magnetic rock ’n roll energy, Longing Lasts Longer is a razor sharp satire mixed live to euphoric soundscapes inspired by four decades of pop culture. “Rat tat tat tata dum diddli dee dum dum dumb…LOUDER! Don’t be afraid of that floor!” From the confines of every parochial hall in Ireland, Irish dancing champions are churned out at a massive rate. Medals and cups build up in drawing rooms and Riverdance swells a national pride, but the public aren’t privy to the blood sweat and tears that pave the way to the first place podium. For two sisters in Dublin, Irish dancing is everything and nothing. Margaret Mc Auliffe (Digging for Fire, Jezebel) examines the importance of coming first and why it matters.
A wedding is the craic; birthdays are… alright. But you can’t beat a good Irish funeral. Yeah it’s sad… but ya know what’ll help with that? Kind words, hang sangwiches, a glass of warm porter, milky tea, a bad ballad, a snog with that cousin you know you shouldn’t fancy and a fight over who thought more of the dearly departed. Now you’re ready for the three day wake! Let Foystown’s finest funeral directors Jane and Rob help you come to terms with the loss of your dear friend and local legend big Tom McCarthy. The Wickedness of Oz Kate Gilmore
To Hell in a Handbag Helen Norton & Jonathan White
Dublin “Sure what would you find there only yourself?” Waking up to a picture of Emily Murray posing in a metallic two-piece on Bondi Beach sends Debbie McInerney’s day spiralling into a mire of self-doubt. Dipping in and out of reality, this tale of love and loss merges music, movement and visual art in a romantic exploration of potential not yet fulfilled. A day in the life of a 21-year-old travel agent with a penchant for 1960s musicals. “Time passes. Listen. Time passes.”

Dublin The Secret Lives of Canon Chasuble and Miss Prism. While others are preoccupied with cucumber sandwiches and railway cloakrooms, two minor characters from The Importance of Being Earnest are up to their necks in something else. A country rector and a governess, models of Victorian propriety in public. But in private? This is the play behind the play: a tale of blackmail, false identity … and money. A subversively funny new take on an Irish theatrical classic. “Anyone who lives within their means suffers from lack of imagination.” - Oscar Wilde

“Can I be an oracle for your desire? What do you want of this performance? What do you want of me? Peterson’s performance was a favourite of the 2015 SummerWorks Performance Festival (Toronto).

Fist Pump RAK
Fist Pump transports you from blissed out raves and psychedelic landscapes to stories of revolt, grief and female empowerment. RAK is a new artistic collaboration between Karen Gleeson, Áine Stapleton and Rebecca Warner. Imagine you’re in your teens. You’re at a concert, a rave on the beach, anywhere you can dance and not give a sh*t. Now travel forward in time to 2016. You’re in a theatre, there’s a naked woman on the ground, one under a pile of clothes, and another raving in a bicycle helmet. You are in the room with them for a reason. Pay close attention. Start with a Circle NeedMoreInput Dublin
Start with a circle. Continue outwards. Keep going. Stop, start over. Start with a circle. This time work inwards. Good, start again. Making progress? Getting lost? Yes. Start again. In a darkened space, a performer approaches a rope hanging from above. At the end of the rope hangs the only source of light in the space, a glowing sphere. Created by Jack Phelan and Erin Hermosa, with musical direction by Dunk Murphy (Sunken Foal), Start with a Circle throws an aerial performer, an ingénieur and a composer into the void and presses the button. Rope swings, light flickers, body turns, sound builds. An obsessive study of potential through neon-noir nothingness. Sure you wanna do this? Contains strobe lighting.

BlackCatfish Musketeer Malaprop
This is a play about people getting to know each other through screens. It doesn’t look like the Internet, but it feels like it: it’s compellingly weird, totally full on, and cruel at least as often as it’s kind. That’s because it’s about people, and most people are most of those things, no matter the medium. The people in this play are no exception. Watch them navigate doubt, trust, intimacy at a distance, and the fear of dying alone and being eaten by cats. From the award-winning makers of last year’s Fringe hit LOVE+.

She doesn’t believe women have to retire from living when they have children. Sure, if that was the case she never would have even sat her Leaving Cert. Our puppet protagonist is an unattractive thief out to rob from the comely to give to the homely. The setting is Très Riches Heures, a book of hours and calendar which illustrates and follows that homely thief Time as he scampers through each month. In a new play written by Isadora Epstein and created by the makers of the awardwinning Flemish Proverbs (Fringe 2015), Moira Brady Averill, Isadora Epstein, and Kristina Yee prepare for a performance that summons together the powers of gods, men, puppets, and the hurdygurdy. Black Pitch Pitch Black Aerial Cirque
Accompanied by only the pitch drop experiment, Marie delves deeper into her seclusion as she waits year after year for the fall of her dark companion. The pitch preoccupies her every waking hour, possessing her mind and calling into question the unsettling subjectivity of time through moments of psychosis where the very core of her reality is brought into question. Set in a dilapidated Victorian building in the heart of Dublin’s Creative Quarter, this new aerial theatre performance explores a young woman’s psyche. Her story is taken to the air by one of Ireland’s leading aerial silks artists, Ria Murphy.

Walking through the Dublin Docklands, you’ll feel it. Amongst the glass-cloaked monoliths and wastelands of unused development sites, you’ll see it. Makeshift Ensemble and a cast of six activist / performers from Ireland, Belgium, South Africa, Peru and the Democratic Republic of Congo invite you to question the role of idealism and our responsibility for action in a (faux)-globalised world. Utopia Ltd. is an off-site collaborative theatre performance, inspired by the biography of Roger Casement. It explores flawed and flawless heroes, a world mapped by international trade and the optimistic impossibility that tonight we will change the world. But is there anything we can all agree on? Short Films Exploring a Transforming Europe
Crisis has rattled Europe. We were interested in the new rules of the game. In those who make them. In those who want to change them. Artists from Europe documented the transformation of the Old World into a new one. Their seven films explore ties to a physical home-place, question ideas of nationhood and challenge us on what we choose to look away from.

EUROPOLY is a project in which artists document the new rules of the game since the financial crisis rattled Europe. Through films and performances, they tell the stories of how the European financial crisis has stamped our everyday lives. Committed, always subjective and very specific, it is about seeking: in supermarket checkouts, in Irish villages and Portuguese clubs. EUROPOLY looks forward. And invites everyone to butt in.
In 2016, Tiger Dublin Fringe participates in EUROPOLY with two exhilarating shows – This Beach (page 32) and Monday: Watch Out for the Right! BLEED Bottlenote
BLEED animates an abandoned Georgian house, creating a reverberating, pulsing space. The audience is led from room to room each occupied by a musician, guided by light design which highlights the patina and atmosphere of the house. A live collaborative tape piece is used, a technique of recording each performance and replaying that recording throughout the house as the next performance is occurring. With ten performances this creates an increasingly rich, layered ambiance where past decisions inform subsequent ones, with each musician adding to the composition over five days turning the entire four storey house into a huge instrument.
