They offer balms of beauty and wonder, speak potent truths to power, distil rage into action and brew art from the inexpressible. They prescribe parties to heal our fight-fatigued souls and soothe us with filthy laughs, the adrenaline of chance, the euphoria of limitless possibility. Joy as an act of resistance.

meltybrains? Scantily masked musicians exploring the capabilities of the universe with weapons of mass distortion. Also just a bunch of lads. Meltybrains? have garnered a reputation for their unabashed creativity, picking up a loyal following that has helped them sell out shows across Ireland,
the UK and the US. The chemistry between each member on stage is infectious. For one night only at Fringe, they’re joining forces with visual projection artists Algorithm for a gig that must be seen to be believed.
Remember we told you we’d be taking up space in the city? We’re starting by claiming a space for artists and audiences to gather on Dame St, right in the heart of the festival action. We’re staging a 16-day Fringe takeover of Hely’s Bar and making ourselves feel at home. Expect glitter. Toast your successes, make new friends, turn a look and have a bop. It's exclusively for Dublin Fringe artists and audiences so you’ll need to flash your artist pass or a Fringe ticket at the door. On the weekends, we’re going out out. We’re planning a lifesaving DJ line-up 'til 3am on Friday and Saturday nights. Come to the Festival Club to connect, to see your pals for post-show pints and maybe to dream up some new ideas. See you on the dance floor!

AFTER
Photo: Jose Miguel Jimenez
liv o’donoghue This is it. It’s over. The end of days. Humanity and the world as we know it are ending and we’ve stared deep into the abyss to make a documentary for you. It’s a rough cut, but it’s the best we could do under the circumstances. A forewarning for how you would cope and what you would do. To see what it really looks and feels like to know the end is nigh. Using live-stream film, physicality and performance, we see the stages of the breakdown, the fallout, all that passed.
Investigating our very human fear of endings, AFTER will take you into the beyond, the bit after the end, when it’s already over. It’s a relief... almost. samira elagoz
An award-winning performance about violence and intimacy. Samira Elagoz takes us along on her personal research project across three continents. From online platforms to close encounters, she showcases gender relations in all their brutal and wonderful ambivalence. Elagoz takes the audience on her journey of regaining power, reinventing an autonomous expression of sexuality and attempts to relate to men after being raped. Confrontational, unrestrainedly funny and deeply touching, the performance explores desire, the power of femininity and the male gaze in a world in which the virtual and the real are inextricably intertwined. Cock, Cock.. Who’s There? won the Prix Jardin d'Europe at Impulstanz in 2017.

Examining the imperfect, unstable nature of our mind through movement, sound and video. The audience, along with three dancers, are immersed in a strange, beautiful, fragmented world. Surrounded by a sound score of whispers and fractured voices,

THE PEOPLESWAY dance among other things
A devised, immersive movement-theatre piece transforms the ordinary into the extraordinary. The PeopleSway shares stories of the heart, home and homeless in Ireland, revealing beautiful communal truths no longer only at the fringes. “In mythos and fairy tales, deities and spirits test the hearts of humans by showing up in robes, rags, silver sashes, or with muddy feet... as a man who cannot speak, or an animal who can. The great powers are testing to see if humans have yet learned to recognise the
greatness of soul in all its varying forms.” Dancing, sometimes we sway in an unexpected way to a garden overgrown, encountering beautiful beasts who balance between what's expected and unexpected of beings. Supported by D-Light Studios, Dance Ireland and Dublin Simon Community. This venue has wheelchair accessibility, however please contact our box office prior to booking.

Right, so let’s get one thing straight: Femme Bizarre are not “fierce”, they are fucking FEROCIOUS. A full-on force to be reckoned with. Marvel as they put themselves through the ringer with aerial stunts, high-octane voguing, explosive vocals and spoken word. Sound good?
Yeah, we thought so. Step inside the cage, the door is wide open... Supported by the The Arts Council / An Chomhairle Ealaíon. Produced by John Dennehy. Contains nudity, the use of strobe lighting and smoke machines.

CIKADA & SPIT
ali & henrik / reckless ross CIKADA Two acrobats create a world between the harmonious and the absurd. In this world, lines are blurred between human and nature. Ali Stanger and Henrik Gard create a mutual acrobatic language of finesse and honesty. A fun, thoughtful and humorous display of rich imagery and dynamic riveting movement. Cikada developed at FRINGE LAB with the support of Dublin Fringe Festival.
SPIT Push hard, stand up, and spit back. Stop being hijacked by the consumer culture, by spectacle, by tits and teeth and nipple tassels. This show is a celebration of the fierce and wild. Brutality balanced by beauty. Circus that challenges set ideas of gender stereotypes and female expectations in society. A political and evocative one-woman circus. “Here’s the granite swish swish, the rise and dip dip of the walls of the liffey, the whip whip of the amber lit streetlights…” Witty and trippy, Colm Keegan’s debut play hums with rich poetic language. Craner, about to be a Dad, takes us on a madcap journey from Ballymun to the Rotunda and back again. Stumbling through a city falling down, a past that

I AM DYNAMITE curated by roisin agnew
When concepts of free speech and free thinking have been coopted by conservatives, how should artists reclaim these for themselves? We think of artists as agitators and provocateurs, yet in complex times it feels like there is an imperative for art not to offend. From Michelle Wolf to the naked child nymphs in the Manchester Art Gallery, questions around what is acceptable and in good taste seem to be

Sorcha LOVES weddings. Just like the other girls in the parish, she’s been dying for her own day since forever and ever. The thing is, she has just run away from her own reception. Has she gone mad? Or is this the first moment of clarity she’s had in years? Perched on the edge of her “perfectly planned” life, Sorcha is pure ragin’ at the dawning reality that she’s never really listened to herself. Can she ever go back? This is a darkly funny tale of young love in rural Ireland and a lifelong quest to settle down.

To challenge the bureaucracy of Irish political life and to save the local school of music from being converted into apartments for racehorses, Brendan Galileo is determined to join the ranks of the European Parliament. Alas, in the City of Tribes he is a man without a spear, his previous electoral efforts little more than a novelty act. In a last-ditch attempt to dramatically improve his public profile, he must represent his country in the most vicious diplomatic catfight in the continent, the Eurovision Song Contest.

SPACES FRINGE LAB provides year-round practical and artistic support, responding to the needs of both developing and established artists, technicians, producers and practitioners. FRINGE LAB is both a space and a platform of activities for training and learning. Professional performing artists need somewhere to work. FRINGE LAB was used by over 200 companies for 6,000+ hours in the last year. Fringe is devoted to cultivating connections: artists access in-house expertise from marketing to producing and everything in between! STUDIO 1 – STUDIO SPACE A dedicated space for the development of new work. It’s available free of charge 12 hours a day, seven days a week on an application basis. See fringefest.com for more! THE CELL – OFFICE SPACE A quieter office space dedicated to writers and producers who need silence to work or write. This small office space is available from Monday to Friday, 10am – 6pm and is booked in advance. FRINGE LAB FOYER A drop-in facility with free Wi-Fi, a computer and access to printing facilities. Available on a first come, first served basis Monday to Friday, 10am – 6pm. STUDIO 2 – SPACE FOR HIRE Need a space to rehearse? Or to hold auditions, meetings, workshops or classes? Studio 2 at FRINGE LAB is available to hire! For very competitive rates, use this bright and spacious room overlooking Meeting House Square in Temple Bar all year round. Just drop us a line at hello@fringefest.com or call 01 6706106 to make your booking.
ARTISTS Lots of remarkable artists joined the Fringe team this year. At FRINGE LAB, we want to mould our resources to suit the needs of the artist. That’s why in 2018 we are shaking things up. Our new initiatives aren’t just about physical space: we’re thinking about a sense of belonging and a community.

FRINGE LAB
FRINGE LAB Artist Office A free, shared, lockable office space at Fringe HQ that artists can make their own. Writer Dylan Coburn Gray; actor, writer and producer Stephen Colfer; and theatre director Mollie Molumby join us from April 2018 – April 2019. FRINGE LAB Associate Artists A pilot scheme for artists who need space to grow without feeling the pressure to fit into a specific support model. We’re providing space for making, meetings and workshops. But we’re taking our lead from this year’s associate artists: Change of Address Collective and Trans Live Art Salon. FRINGE LAB Hot Deskers Feeling isolated as a freelancer has been a recurring issue in our conversations with artists. We’ve opened up more hot desk space at FRINGE LAB. Artists for this pilot programme are writer and actor Noelle Brown; Jeda de Brí and Finbarr Doyle of Sickle Moon Productions; and comedian Davey Reilly. FRINGE LAB Summer Programme Check out fringefest.com/fringelab to catch up on our Summer Programme. If you would like to find out more about FRINGE LAB on an ongoing basis, mail hello@fringefest.com to be included in our FRINGE LAB mailing list. FRINGE LAB is funded by the Arts Council and Dublin City Council’s Arts Office.

SUNDAY 23 SEPTEMBER FESTIVAL CLUB CLOSING NIGHT PARTY + FRINGE AWARDS
Hundreds of artists spend thousands of hours making work for Dublin Fringe Festival each year. Their ambition and hard work is inspiring. The Awards celebrate just a handful of the most breath-taking, rule-breaking, legendmaking moments from each festival. Our panel of judges recognise the extraordinary skill and talent on display and acknowledge some of the stand-outs in this year’s festival.
Fishamble New Writing Award Awarded to an emerging Irish (or Irelandbased) writer for a new play. The award includes dramaturgical support by Fishamble: The New Play Company.
Best Production For the show that has it all!
Next Stage Wild Card A bursary to be part of the Next Stage at Dublin Theatre Festival with Theatre Forum.
Best Design Outstanding lighting, sound, scenic, projection, costume or overall design. Best Performers Two of this year’s brightest stars will take home this accolade. Best Ensemble The standout ensemble – the heartbeat of a show. Judges’ Choice Awards Three awards to acknowledge something that defies categorisation but must be recognised for its brilliance.
First Fortnight Award The winner will perform at the First Fortnight Festival; whose mission is mental health awareness, challenging prejudice and ending stigma.
Bewley’s Café Theatre Little Gem Award The most exciting show that’s under 60 minutes with a handsome prize: a twoweek run at Bewley’s Café Theatre and €2,000 for the remount. Spirit of Wit: Moira Brady Averill Award A monetary prize and unique award for an artist willing to take risks and whose work defies categorisation with bold and unconventional material. In memory of Moira Brady Averill, who had the power to transform space and thought through alchemical wit.
AWARDS 2018
At the time, the team said that “at last, young theatre companies and performers from Ireland and Europe have the chance to put on exciting and innovative shows…while entertainment-hungry audiences need no longer roam the streets in a vain search for a less conventional kind of night out.”
