Fringe is 21 and we’re giving you all the birthday presents. First off, we’re bringing back a long-lost favourite friend of the festival, the legendary Spiegeltent! Right in the heart of the city at Wolfe Tone Square, the Spiegeltent is the place to catch the dazzling, the wonderful and the daring. fringefest.com | 1850 374 643

here’s your chance to first hear from the likes of Alice Malseed, Áine Ryan, Sligo’s Tintoretto Sect, The Lir Academy grads Eccles Theatre Group and many more.

Our headliners have all that in spades; the astounding and charming Company 2 with their acrobatic circus extravaganza, Scotch & Soda. Soaring over your head, pulling off shocking stunts, these daredevils and their live band accompaniment will thrill you. It’s a total winner.

Dance is one of Ireland’s most astounding art forms – get on the bandwagon. Newcomer Alba Lorca and Fringe favourite performers Justine Cooper, Luke Murphy, Liadain Herriott, Antje O’Toole and Emma Fitzgerald reveal new works built on story, disruption and joy. Croí Glan and ponydance join forces for a perception-challenging romp while John Scott and Irish Modern Dance Theatre burst forth with a new choreographic sensation.

Are you ready to rumble? Dublin’s own Over the Top Wrestling is, in what’s set to be the head-knocking hit of the festival. Skilled performers, hilarious laughs, this one’s going to be a powerhouse of a tilt. The old world charm of the Spiegeltent will be abuzz with great choons. Al Porter and the Swing Cats mix music and comedy and Booka Brass Band will have Wolfe Tone Square bursting at its seams, while Sounds Alive offers intelligent and quirky live radio stories and song.

Tying it all together is where theatre, dance and performance meet. Brokentalkers and junk ensemble, in a long-awaited co-created collaboration, put non-performers on stage in surreal acting and movement styles while the unclassifiable Ruairí Donovan and Asaf Aharonson involve us in a powerful meditation on decency, eroticism and intimacy. Object Piggy from aerialist Emily Aoibheann will explode our senses in a genre-breaking fusion of live sculpture, laser play and circus.

Cabaret legends will ignite our nights. Mx Justin Vivian Bond gives us wit and soaring song under the musical direction of Thomas Bartlett. Bourgeois & Maurice and David Hoyle offer a mundanity-inspired ripper of a music and comedy night with Middle of the Road. There will be more, keep your eyes peeled for special treats announced throughout the lead-up to the festival. It wouldn’t be a birthday without some surprises.

Comedy fans will split their sides as David O’Doherty, Alison Spittle, Katie O’Brien, Abie Philbin Bowman and Conor O’Toole offer great laughs. Martin McSharry theatricalises a comedian having his worst day. Kim Noble is set to redefine theatre, comedy and 5 everything in one of the most profound performances out of the UK in the past decade. You’re Not Alone will push the envelope, push your buttons and get you right in the gut.

Now about that unconventional birthday party of ours. We invited a group of 21 year olds to celebrate their 21st birthday and the 21st birthday of Fringe. We handed them the keys to the festival, saying ‘Make! Create!’ They’ve surveyed 21-year old Dubliners and are transforming those results into an installation/ squat/laboratory/utopia. They’re also flipping the project on its head, refusing to be obedient subjects in an art experiment and asking why Fringe made the invitation in the first place. It will be bold, unusual and cheeky. Come visit, meet, play and feed.

Music lovers: prepare to hit the streets to enjoy great gigs in unique venues across Dublin. Bottlenote weave their spell in 13 North Great Georges Street, Young Hearts Run Free take over the Freemasons’ Hall for one night only, while newcomer Seán Kennedy will wow you in historic Smock Alley. Keep an eye out for Famous Seamus and Sean-tastic, the livewire Lords of Strut who are hosting the sweatiest 30 minute Contain-A-Rave in the heart of the city. Afterwards, pop along with the opera fans revelling in Handel’s Agrippina, presented by Irish Youth Opera with Northern Ireland Opera.

Fringe is the festival where artists reimagine the city, giving us new memories of performances that resonate whenever we pass. Spirit of the Fringe winner Louise White creates an epic environment imagining a community emblematic of our times in Mother You. Company SJ returns to Fringe with some of Ireland’s performing arts legends with Beckett in the City: The Women Speak. Loosysmokes presents late-night acrobatics swooshing through the trees of Phoenix Park under the cover of darkness. True-blue theatre fans will find performances to delight, harrow and inspire. Selina Cartmell brings us an all new production of GROUNDED by George Brant. MIRARI, Breach & Quinn, and the ever popular Show in a Bag series give shining examples of new writing and new performance. Stefanie Preissner assembles the lousiest Ard Fheis ever in a searing exposé on failure. Fringe is also where to discover new voices,

Twenty First Presented by FRINGE LAB RATS Dublin An experiment. What happens when a group of people who don’t usually get a shot, get a shot? What happens when they are given free reign of a chunk of Tiger Dublin Fringe? What happens when a curated festival doesn’t curate? What happens when twenty-one year olds construct and design their utopia? What happens when they live in it? Will it represent twenty-one year old Dublin, or just the twenty-one year olds who showed up? Tiger Dublin Fringe invited a group of twentyone year olds to create some sort of birthday celebration for themselves and the festival. For seven days, a group of self-selecting twentyone year olds will respond to this invitation. They will live together in a human sized lab rat cage of their own design. It will be a little corner of the universe that’s more playful, more interpersonal and less internet-ed than the rest. This is their utopia. This is their experiment. They are the subject. Come and see and play. Witness, study or take part in this experiment.

A shamefully neglected piece of Irish cinema, The Score was panned on its initial release and Breach & Quinn, devastated by the response, never made another film. The movie sees Quinn, a desperate man in a situation he can’t control. There’s a woman, a fat man with alarmingly high-waisted trousers and it certainly appears that there will be violence. Over time The Score became a cult hit. As a result of this resurgent interest Breach & Quinn agreed to come out of retirement and perform the film live onstage - complete with its “sprawling, hallucinatory and probably unplayable soundtrack.” (Unplayable? We’ll see about that). Sit back. Open your eyes. Dream.

Conor O’Toole: A Retrospective 1995–2015 Conor O’Toole Dublin

Stand-up comedian Conor O’Toole presents a guided tour through his artistic works of the past twenty years, from toddlerhood to presenthood, and gives his critical analysis. This introduction to his varied body of work will include a song about a lighthouse (2011), live excerpts from his Attenboroughesque nature documentary series Conor O’Toole’s World of the Animal Kingdom (2015), and the ever popular Poker Joke (2013). Some of the comedy routines featured in the show will be available for purchase on exit. O’Toole opened for Josie Long on her recent Irish tour and starred in a short film in Cannes last year (it didn’t win anything).

Piggy Dying Breeds Dublin Balloons, bodies and steel rings, a Bauhaus Ballet for Dublin city, Object Piggy re-figures aerial dance as a fetish for hardware; a circus-sculpture; a looking-object; ein schauobjekt. A woman totters in pink trotters entangled in balloon ropes, she spins a-top a ribbon strand and you are overcome with lust for laser-play! A scientific physical phenomenon, all surgical masks and marbles, and the desire to swing in steel... Visual textures that hit you right in the third eye (the one between the legs) with a visceral, vocal, musical display and a question: “is it ok if it’s not ok?” Object Piggy is an aerial dynamic sculpture project by Emily Aoibheann (PaperDolls Performance, Dying Breeds). Breda is on pilgrimage through the towns of Ireland with only the Virgin Mary for company. It is 30 years since the moving statues and Breda wants to reinvent Mary as a feminist icon. Exploring gender, faith and rural life through interactions with members of each community, Breda rediscovers Irish oddities for us to laugh and treasure. She has notions of enlightenment but life on the road makes it hard to live up to her namesake Brigid. Overshadowed Sunday’s Child Dublin / London

Imogene used to be sparkly, vivacious and outgoing. She used to fancy lads, have curves and love chips. Recently however she has become withdrawn, gaunt, obsessed with exercise. The reason? Caol, her new “best friend”, who’s cast a dark shadow over Imogene’s life. Invisible to everyone except Imogene, Caol will not rest until Imogene has been reduced both emotionally and physically to a shadow of her former self. Through puppetry and physicality this piece aims to provoke compassion and debate around the subject of eating disorders. Winner of the 2014 First Fortnight Award for My Name is Saoirse.

Sarajevo, 1994. The city is under siege. Sniper fire kills civilians every day. The citizens of Sarajevo run to avoid being shot. They all run for one thing: shelter. Sklonište (shelter) was spray-painted throughout Sarajevo to guide its citizens to underground shelters. The siege lasted 1,425 days - a long time to have to run for your life. Ailís Ní Ríain (music/poetry), Dermot Dunne (accordion), Sarajevobased Jim Marshall (images) and the citizens of Sarajevo combine to present an alternative reflection on the longest siege in modern warfare. Dancer, writer, musician; Lucia Joyce was a talented and courageous woman. Lucia spent her entire life under the control of her father James, mother Nora, their friends and doctors, and was incarcerated by her brother Giorgio. Lucia spent 50 years in psychiatric hospitals until her death in 1982, but many doctors, friends and family have argued against her supposed insanity. Her time in Ireland during the 1930s, in particular Bray, County Wicklow, was one of her few moments of freedom. Working from Lucia’s writings, Medicated Milk is a film created with José Miguel Jiménez (film production) and Neil O’ Connor (Somadrone).

Where does classicism meet minimalism? Her quest, in and of itself, creates a liminal universe where fragments make sense and sense is fragmented. Classical lassical, liminal minimal, a journey through rhythm and rhyme using movement - a kaleidoscope of parallel worlds where classical influences in movement and music morph with minimal electronic beats.

When the world gives you coconuts, they are typically high-hanging! Lose yourself in the world of a castaway sailor stranded on a tropical island. Here the calamities of coconut-cracking and hammock-dwelling are laid bare in a blend of sketch comedy and thrilling acrobatic theatre. Set during the late 16th century, at the beginning of the Dutch Golden Age, two prison cooks attempt to make you a bowl of pottage. They will do their very best, but sometimes, as the old Flemish Proverb goes, “He who has spilled the pottage cannot scrape it all up again.” In the cavernous arches of Luncheonette, an almost edible fiasco will be staged. The toots of the Krumhorn will accompany your considerations of regret and humiliation - a reminder that there is no such thing as a free lunch.

Scripted The Lir The Lir Academy at Trinity College Dublin presents a showcase of new plays by this year’s graduating Master in Fine Art playwrights. The seven MFA playwrights have been immersed in training led by Graham Whybrow (former Literary Manager of the Royal Court) and taught by playwrights, dramaturges and literary managers, including Conor McPherson, Karin McCully, Thomas Conway and Gavin Kostick (Fishamble). Scripted has a professional cast and graduate actors from The Lir. It offers script-in-hand readings of extracts, and a chance to hear new plays by new playwrights.

Irish Theatre Institute’s key networking event Information Toolbox - is produced specifically with the needs of companies programmed as part of Tiger Dublin Fringe in mind. This event provides an ideal environment for theatre and dance artists to promote their shows, pitch work to venues and festivals and begin dialogue with key funding agencies and support organisations. Over the years it has evolved to also provide the participants with an opportunity to meet and engage with international organisations and presenters. The objective is for companies and artists to investigate the possibility of remounting their shows following Tiger Dublin Fringe or, indeed, to develop new relationships for their work in the future. Tiger Dublin Fringe Awards 2015 Fringe Awards recognise, reward and celebrate the hard work and talent on display in the festival each year. Annually hundreds of artists bring their intelligence, heart, vision and drive to projects at the festival. They inspire us. The Awards honour and acknowledge some of the stand-outs in this year’s festival. Best Production Presented to the show, production or event that has it all, displaying excellence in every area of production, design, performance, concept and execution. This award acknowledges the artistry that is poured into presenting work at the festival and honours the comprehensive production. 2014’s winner was How To Keep An Alien by Sonya Kelly / Rough Magic. The Best Design Award The Best Design award is presented for outstanding lighting, sound, scenic, projection, costume or overall design. The 2014 winner was Tardigrade by Philip Connaughton for overall design. Best Performers Two of the festival’s best performers will take home this much soughtafter accolade from a field of up to ten nominees. 2014’s winners were Emmet Kirwan and Ian Lloyd Anderson (Dublin Oldschool) and Lauren Larkin (Advocacy). Best Ensemble Introduced in 2014, this award recognises the ensemble as the standout – the key and driving action behind a project or show. 2014 winners were Talking Shop Ensemble and Shaun Dunne for Advocacy. Judge’s Choice Award Instituted in 2014, the Judge’s Choice Award recognises a project, contributor, experience or Fringe event that defies categorisation and is simply too good to pass by unheralded. The inaugural winner was ZOMBIES why death is dying or are you working hard enough? by Ruairí Donovan. Fishamble New Writing Award Honouring the best play by a new or emerging Irish (or Ireland-based) playwright premiered during Tiger Dublin Fringe, this award includes dramaturgical support as appropriate,

for instance, a scholarship place on one of Fishamble’s acclaimed playwriting courses and/or support through the New Play Clinic for the playwright’s next play, generously supported by Fishamble: The New Play Company. The idea of new writing is interpreted broadly to include new works in the area of dance, performance art, music, multi-author, post-dramatic works and so on. The 2014 recipient of this coveted award was Fiona McGeown and Thomas Conway for Between Trees and Water.fishamble.com. First Fortnight Award Since its inception in 2009, First Fortnight’s key aim has been to challenge stigma and prejudice about mental health issues through the creative arts. Tiger Dublin Fringe is dedicated to advancing, strengthening and supporting the independent arts sector. Tiger Dublin Fringe : New Perspectives

Tiger Dublin Fringe is home to bold ideas, brave performing arts and adventurous audiences. Fringe focuses on fresh and innovative approaches to the arts from Irish and international makers. This ethos is at the very heart of Fringe and we aim to apply it to everything we do.

This year we worked with two of Ireland’s brightest new photographers to create the image and look for the festival as well as our much-loved Show in a Bag strand of new works. We’re lucky to have the work of Cáit Fahey (festival campaign) and Clíona Ní Laoi (Show in a Bag) grace our brochure pages. The 2015 central campaign was devised and photographed by Cáit, with Scott Burnett of Studio Aad for art direction, Clíona assisting, and styling provided by Saileóg O’Halloran. The brief we developed with Scott and Cáit was to have festival artists as our guides to the mysterious, the joyful and the surreal. Using mirrors to create portals and make-you-looktwice images, Cáit’s photos capture magical micro-performances as the artists play with our perspective. With thanks to our artist models Raymond Keane (Remember to Breathe), Louise White (Mother You), Seán Kennedy (boy), Matthew O’Dwyer ((Not) Belonging), and Megan Kennedy and Jessica Kennedy (It Folds). The imagery for this year’s Show in a Bag strand was photographed by Clíona, in collaboration 99 with the Show in a Bag artists. Clíona’s brief was to photograph four brand new shows against a simple background and transform the same starting off point into images that resonate with character and story. Catch these dynamic images across the festival, we’re thrilled with the results.

Clíona Ní Laoi is an interdisciplinary creative working across the fields of art and design. Specialising in lens based media, she makes conceptually driven works across print, photography, publication and film. Driven by experimentation, her work focuses on analogue solutions of graphic works. Her practice holds a poetic quality with a particular focus on a place where art, design and philosophy meet.
