These visionaries lead our explorations of our city and ourselves. Our laughter will run riot, our reflections will be deep and we’ll immerse ourselves in ideas, in new knowledge and unusual experiences. Come along with us, we’re going to have a great time doing it. We’ve painted ourselves in new stripes for the occasion. In 2014 we’re proud to become Tiger Dublin Fringe. Ever an advocate of discovery, Tiger Beer becomes our title sponsor, backing your exploration of adventurous art embedded throughout the city. Take a trip through Tiger Beer presents Dublin Made to encounter on-the-edge dance, music, comedy and theatre from The Company, Shaun Dunne and Talking Shop Ensemble, Jape, DJ Kormac, Philip Connaughton and Foil Arms and Hog. These are artists who are rooted in Dublin, making shows with global significance. Count on delightful, electric and thrilling performances. 2FM also presents a series of Chancers giving us the opportunity to take a risk and engage with some of the cheekier aspects of Fringe. Tiger Dublin Fringe will feature brave new theatre, dance, comedy, music, spectacle and more. We are wall to wall full of unmissable nights and incredible moments. In the opening festival weekend, two outdoor works look back at ancient Ireland. Ulysses Opera Theatre brings us HARP | A River Cantata a largescale, free outdoor concert, an ode to the Samuel Beckett Bridge and retelling of the Dagda myth. French/Québecois/Moroccan artist 2Fik does an 8-hour photoshoot staging 2Fik does Strongbow (and Aoife) in a daring and cheeky reworking of the classic painting depicting the Norman conquest. Meeting House Square becomes home to an exciting line-up of concerts and happenings. The luminous Camille O’Sullivan celebrates her 20-year history with Fringe in two smouldering concerts. US choreographer Miguel Gutierrez leads us in DEEP AEROBICS, made famous by sweating, beaming fans of The Knife all over the world. Tiger Dublin Fringe spreads to venues loved and unknown across the city, from Project Arts Centre to Tom Walsh’s House in Dublin 8, from Smock Alley to Drury Street Car Park and the first time ever, the Abbey Theatre on the Peacock Stage.

Irish Fringe favourites like Sonya Kelly, Brian Fleming, 15th Oak, Lords of Strut, Tracy Martin and Eleanor Tiernan return joined by artists new to Fringe like Maud in Cahoots, Al Porter, Vaari Claffey, Alison Spittle and Stefan Fae. Look for collaborations between Irish artists and those from Austria, Germany, Denmark, Sweden and USA – a sure sign that Fringe makers are making their mark on the world stage. Be sure to catch the sensational appearance from Croatian choreographer Matija Ferlin; it will stun dance, poetry and visual art fans alike. You’ll notice a particular Canadian feel to the festival this year; I couldn’t help but bring something from one home to another. Canada and Ireland have more and more in common; here’s your chance to encounter leading Canadian makers. Inuk throat singer Tanya Tagaq (Cambridge Bay) performs her astonishing live score to the documentary classic Nanook of the North, bringing The Arctic alive in Meeting House Square. Toronto’s Evan Webber & Frank Cox-O’Connell return with their intimate theatre-and-war plays Ajax, the much-anticipated second half of 2010 Fringe favourite Little Iliad - less than 40 seats a show, don’t miss out. From Vancouver, The Chop brings us How to Disappear Completely, where a charismatic lighting designer shows us tricks of the 7 trade while recounting how he granted his mother’s dying wish. Moving to Dublin, getting to know the city and calling it my own has been an incredible ride and putting together this festival has been an honour and a total delight. Thank you to Dublin and its community of artists, thinkers, makers, doers and lovers-of-life for the warm and sincere welcome. Thanks to our Board of Directors for vision and total dedication. Thanks to our passionate staff for their leadership, talent and skill – they love this festival and it shows. HARP | A River Cantata Join a triumphant opening weekend celebration as this once-off, free, large-scale outdoor performance turns Santiago Calatrava’s Samuel Beckett Bridge into Ireland's largest musical instrument, telling the story of the Harp of Dagda on a massive scale. Tom Lane’s composition is inspired by the frequencies of the elegant supports or ‘strings’, featuring artists on the bridge, the river and its north and south banks. This huge undertaking, rejoicing in the bridge and the city will bring together musicians and performers from all over Dublin. They will be joined by opera singers, drummers and dancers who will bring the area to life in spectacular new ways. Merging gender, race play and high fashion, the photographer and performance artist 2Fik will perform more than 80 characters from the famous Daniel Maclise painting The Marriage of Strongbow and Aoife to create a contemporary version. Questioning Irishness, religion, gender and history this reinterpretation will feature characters from his repertoire and the local Irish context. Posing as men, women and teenagers, his appearance evolves over the eight hour performance. The final result will be unveiled on 12 September. “2Fik throws in so many humorous curve balls that you can’t help but scratch your head admiringly and chuckle.” — Now Magazine Artistic residency supported by Generator Hostel. DJ Kormac AV Show

Festival favourite, local lad, acclaimed producer, band-leader and DJ. Kormac will perform a solo, audio visual set in a brand new show created especially for Fringe. His instantly recognisable and idiosyncratic style is unleashed as he controls, cuts, scratches and manipulates all sound and visuals using just two turntables. The twisting, morphing and shaping of sounds from other eras forms this new eclectic musicality and the show itself is no run-of-the-mill chin-stroker but a bouncing, infectious spectacle. Jape

Jape began in 2003 as a solo project of Dublin musician Richard Egan. Over the years, the band has evolved to become one of Ireland’s most exciting and energetic live acts blending meticulously crafted lyrics with upbeat electronic rhythms. Using an inventive mix of live instruments, hardware samplers and sequencers, the band create a sound that encompasses many different styles and spans genres, a sort of gothic pop.

Spine-tingling vocalist Tanya Tagaq can capture the most ethereal moments of desire or find the deepest, huskiest, beating pulse with her voice and breath. Her intense, evocative vocalisations, based on Inuit throat singing traditions, help reclaim the controversial 1922 documentary Nanook of the North. Tagaq, along with percussion and violin performs a live accompaniment to the film’s silent images of life in an early 20th-century Inuit community in Northern Canada. Tagaq has been performing on major stages worldwide, as well as collaborating with everyone from Björk to Kronos Quartet to Mike Patton. Dancing Suns / I Am The Cosmos Ireland

I Am The Cosmos are an electronic duo from Dublin made up of Cian Murphy and Ross Turner. Their debut album Monochrome was released in 2013 claiming Nialler 9’s Irish Album of the Year. Choosing to make rare live appearances and having signed a deal with Faber Music in 2013, I Am The Cosmos focus on recording and on-going collaborations with Irish artists such as Jape, Lisa Hannigan, Solar Bears and Ships. Currently Cian and Ross are working on a follow up album in Dublin’s National Concert Hall as part of the Artists in Residence project.

Dancing Suns came together as something special was created by Nina, Fabien and Sean when they hid out in a beautiful old ballroom in Celbridge during the recording of their crowd-funded album Goldmine. Nina Hynes has long been known in the Dublin scene for her songs, experimentation and theatrical performances. Fabien has spent years producing other musicians quietly in a Berlin studio. Advocacy is a word like any other. Some people use it, some people don’t. From the company that brought you the award-winning Death of the Tradesmen, comes a new play about other people’s shoes, policy making, policy taking, participating and walking miles. Inspired by the Social Model of Disability and conceptually exploring Disability Service Provision in Ireland, it’s an act of empathy and an effort to understand. It’s about respectfully sticking your oar in, speaking up for yourself, sticking up for each other - and the importance of knowing what goes on behind closed doors. Developed with support from Rough Magic Production Support, Choices Day Programme at St. John of God Community Services for People with Intellectual Disability, the Arts Council / An Chomhairle Ealaíon, MAKE; a residential workshop facilitated by Cork Midsummer Festival, Project Arts Centre, Theatre Forum and Tiger Dublin Fringe. you told me to wash and clean my ears Amanda Coogan / Dublin Theatre of the Deaf

In 1972 the Deaf community came together at a time when they were institutionalised and marginalised in their first act of political awakening to protest the shooting dead of Eamonn McDevitt by the British Army. Days before Bloody Sunday and weeks before its burning down, they marched on the British Embassy in Dublin. This rigorously contemporary, challenging new work weaves live art and community theatre. It springs from Deaf history, primarily using Irish Sign Language. Working collaboratively for the first time at Fringe, this performance goes back to look forward to the recognition of ISL and the rights of Deaf people.

Bastard: A Family History Oddie Braddell

Oddie Braddell is an actor. You’ve probably seen him. He has appeared completely naked as a dead body in Ripper St. He has paraded an enormous pair of mustaches around the background of a crucial scene in Game of Thrones. He has been the voice of the McDonald’s Eurosaver Menu. What you probably didn’t know is that he comes from a long line of complete bastards. Bloody Braddell of Drogheda was an officer in the Cromwellian army with a particular penchant for genocide. John Waller Braddell was land agent who held the record for the highest number of evictions during the famine. What does this make Oddie? Come and find out.

Since 2000, the St Pat’s For All Parade in Queens has championed diversity and inclusion. With the help of the Holy Trinity (St Patrick, Panti Bliss and the Naked Cowboy), Fleming takes us for a romp through 14 years of celebration and resistance. The Fourteenth Visit Aoife McAtamney

Each day during Fringe three dancers visit the Royal Hibernian Academy, which hosts the retrospective exhibition of celebrated landscape artist Maria Simonds-Gooding. Separately, they playfully collect movement ideas inspired by the art work and its surroundings. In the second week, renowned fiddle player Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh takes on the routine. On the final day, they all meet. Before your eyes they tease out, confront and instantly compose each other's gathered discoveries creating a rapidly shifting improvised performance. This revealing and fresh process marks the first-ever choreographic collaboration with the RHA.

Enter a world where the sepia tones of hidden history and the technicolour of live theatre collide. Using documentary material, witness statements, court depositions and newspaper articles relating to the case of Bridie Kirk, who died in Cork City in 1939 as a result of an illegal abortion, this play is about trying to find a way to tell a story that for 75 years has gone untold. The project is the result of an ambitious collaboration between a cast of five performers, composer Tom Lane, designer Deirdre Dwyer, dramaturg Thomas Conway and director Fiona McGeown.

Taking place in the grounds of the Irish Museum of Modern Art, There Are Pictures Because There Are Walls re-presents works from IMMAâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s collection and temporary exhibitions, together with some additional pieces, to make a dynamic, performative short lived exhibition with the audiences help. In two concerts, five wind players lead the audience on an interactive navigation through Dublin’s soundscape. Peter Ablinger’s composition Places is performed in three separate acoustic spaces visited by audience and musicians walking together through the city. Best Production Presented to the show, production or event that has it all, displaying excellence in every area of production, design, performance, concept and execution. It acknowledges the enormous work and talent that is poured into presenting work at the festival and honours the comprehensive production. 2013’s winner was LIPPY presented by Dead Centre. Best Design The award presented for 100 outstanding lighting, sound, scenic, projection, costume or overall design. The 2013 winner was LIPPY for overall design. Best Performers Two of the best performers of the festival take home this much sought-after prize from a field of up to ten nominees. Formerly given to best male and female, we’re broadening the category to suit performers of all genderidentification. 2013’s winners were Genevieve Hulme-Beaman (Pondling) and Ray Scannell (DEEP). Fishamble New Writing Award For the best play by a new or emerging Irish (or Ireland-based) playwright premiered during Tiger Dublin Fringe, this award includes the prize of a scholarship place on one of Fishamble’s acclaimed playwriting courses, dramaturgical support and a stipend towards the playwright’s next play, generously supported by Fishamble: The New Play Company. The idea of new writing is interpreted broadly to include new works in the area of dance, performance art, music, multi-author, post-dramatic works and so on. Last year’s winner was Dylan Coburn Gray for Boys and Girls (2013). First Fortnight Award Since its inception in 2009, First Fortnight’s key aim has been to challenge stigma and prejudice about mental health issues through the creative arts. This award recognises excellence in a Fringe show that does just that, inviting it back for an encore run at First Fortnight Mental Health Arts Festival in January 2015. 2013’s recipient was Sorcha Kenny for DOLLS. Next Stage Wild Card Tiger Dublin Fringe awards a bursary to an artist who has been part of the festival, enabling them to participate in the Next Stage – an artist development programme run by Dublin Theatre Festival in partnership with Theatre Forum. Producer Aisling Murray won in 2013. Bewley’s Café Theatre Little Gem Award Bewley’s Café Theatre is Ireland’s foremost presenter of lunchtime theatre and is delighted and proud to continue to sponsor the Bewley’s Café Theatre ‘Little Gem’ Award for the most exciting show presented at this year’s festival under 60 minutes. The selection is made by the jury for final approval by Bewley’s Café Theatre. The prize is a handsome one; the winning production earns a two-week run at Bewley’s Café Theatre with €2,000 available to the company for remounting the production. Janet Moran and Steve Blount won with SWING in 2013. Spirit of the Fringe Commissioning Award Tiger Dublin Fringe and Project Arts Centre are taking a year off to revamp and rethink a new award that brings a Fringe artist into the fold of Project Arts Centre. Meanwhile, 2013 Spirit of the Fringe Winner Louise White (Way Back Home) is hard at work on a new project that will unfold in 2015 supported by both Fringe and Project.

Tiger Dublin Fringe identifies, curates and nurtures emerging artists. FRINGE LAB provides year round practical and artistic support, responding to their needs and indeed those of independent more established artists. There is huge demand for these supports which are pivotal in shaping the work of a new generation of Irish performing artists, amplifying their presence on the world stage. These artists’ work is devised, demanding collaboration. As the arts sector diverges from individual companies each with its own administration, at a basic level, professional performing artists need somewhere to work. We provide that space at Fringe HQ, with two large studios (Studio 1: a dedicated, free space for development of new work and Studio 2: used for our series of workshops, masterclasses, special events and also available for hire at a very competitive rate), writer’s room (the CELL) and our drop in Artists’ Office (complete with PC, free wifi and printer); all backed up by access to our own in-house expertise, and an ongoing schedule of workshops, masterclasses, resource sharing activities and networking opportunities such as FRINGE FUSE and elevenses. Last year we provided over 3,000 hours of free studio space to artists based in Dublin and beyond, making FRINGE LAB a vital hub for artists making work in this city and this country. Dublin Theatre Festival brings the city’s stages to life over 18 days this September and October with a jam-packed programme of theatre, family shows, exhibitions, installations, work-in-progress showcases, talks and special events. A project by design agency Aad, Where We Are is a year long look at Ireland through the eyes of 12 Irish photographers. A reaction to the narrow view and talking in circles represented by the phrase “We are where we are”, our hope is that by looking, not talking, we might get a clearer sense of where we are.
