This year we turn twenty. This year we celebrate. This year we make art. This year we get radical, we get fluorescent. This year we’re looking out upon unidentified horizons. We reflect on our past and imagine what’s ahead over yonder. We’re embracing the tensions between ambiguity and fact, the personal and the private, between real and fantasy. Intrepid, fearless and powerful artists are our guides. fringefest.com | 1850 374 643

Director's Message

These visionaries lead our explorations of our city and ourselves. Our laughter will run riot, our reflections will be deep and we’ll immerse ourselves in ideas, in new knowledge and unusual experiences. Come along with us, we’re going to have a great time doing it. We’ve painted ourselves in new stripes for the occasion. In 2014 we’re proud to become Tiger Dublin Fringe. Ever an advocate of discovery, Tiger Beer becomes our title sponsor, backing your exploration of adventurous art embedded throughout the city. Tiger joins its support to that of our stalwart core funders: the Arts Council/An Chomhairle Ealaíon, Dublin City Council and Fáílte Ireland and our host of other public and private supporters. Take a trip through Tiger Beer presents Dublin Made to encounter on-the-edge dance, music, comedy and theatre from The Company, Shaun Dunne and Talking Shop Ensemble, Jape, DJ Kormac, Philip Connaughton and Foil Arms and Hog. These are artists who are rooted in Dublin, making shows with global significance. Count on delightful, electric and thrilling performances. 2FM also presents a series of Chancers giving us the opportunity to take a risk and engage with some of the cheekier aspects of Fringe. Tiger Dublin Fringe will feature brave new theatre, dance, comedy, music, spectacle and more. We are wall to wall full of unmissable nights and incredible moments. In the opening festival weekend, two outdoor works look back at ancient Ireland. Ulysses Opera Theatre brings us HARP | A River Cantata a largescale, free outdoor concert, an ode to the Samuel Beckett Bridge and retelling of the Dagda myth. French/Québecois/Moroccan artist 2Fik does an 8-hour photoshoot staging 2Fik does Strongbow (and Aoife) in a daring and cheeky reworking of the classic painting depicting the Norman conquest. Meeting House Square becomes home to an exciting line-up of concerts and happenings. The luminous Camille O’Sullivan celebrates her 20-year history with Fringe in two smouldering concerts. US choreographer Miguel Gutierrez leads us in DEEP AEROBICS, made famous by sweating, beaming fans of The Knife all over the world. Tiger Dublin Fringe spreads to venues loved and unknown across the city, from Project Arts Centre to Tom Walsh’s House in Dublin 8, from Smock Alley to Drury Street Car Park and the first time ever, the Abbey Theatre on the Peacock Stage.

Irish Fringe favourites like Sonya Kelly, Brian Fleming, 15th Oak, Lords of Strut, Tracy Martin and Eleanor Tiernan return joined by artists new to Fringe like Maud in Cahoots, Al Porter, Vaari Claffey, Alison Spittle and Stefan Fae. Look for collaborations between Irish artists and those from Austria, Germany, Denmark, Sweden and USA – a sure sign that Fringe makers are making their mark on the world stage. Be sure to catch the sensational appearance from Croatian choreographer Matija Ferlin; it will stun dance, poetry and visual art fans alike. You’ll notice a particular Canadian feel to the festival this year; I couldn’t help but bring something from one home to another. Canada and Ireland have more and more in common; here’s your chance to encounter leading Canadian makers. Inuk throat singer Tanya Tagaq (Cambridge Bay) performs her astonishing live score to the documentary classic Nanook of the North, bringing The Arctic alive in Meeting House Square. Toronto’s Evan Webber & Frank Cox-O’Connell return with their intimate theatre-and-war plays Ajax, the much-anticipated second half of 2010 Fringe favourite Little Iliad - less than 40 seats a show, don’t miss out. From Vancouver, The Chop brings us How to Disappear Completely, where a charismatic lighting designer shows us tricks of the 7 trade while recounting how he granted his mother’s dying wish. Moving to Dublin, getting to know the city and calling it my own has been an incredible ride and putting together this festival has been an honour and a total delight. Thank you to Dublin and its community of artists, thinkers, makers, doers and lovers-of-life for the warm and sincere welcome. Thanks to our Board of Directors for vision and total dedication. Thanks to our passionate staff for their leadership, talent and skill – they love this festival and it shows. Thanks to all of Fringe’s generations of artists and to former directors Jimmy Fay, Ali Curran, Vallejo Gantner, Wolfgang Hoffman and in particular Róise Goan (who introduced me to Dublin Fringe Festival in the first place) for the brilliant legacy they fostered that we get to continue. For you Fringe audiences, the fans, aficionados and first-timers, welcome. Embrace this year’s cornucopia of sensational performances. Chance your arm on something new, take a risk along with these wonderful artists and live it up! — Kris Nelson

HARP | A River Cantata Join a triumphant opening weekend celebration as this once-off, free, large-scale outdoor performance turns Santiago Calatrava’s Samuel Beckett Bridge into Ireland's largest musical instrument, telling the story of the Harp of Dagda on a massive scale. Merging gender, race play and high fashion, the photographer and performance artist 2Fik will perform more than 80 characters from the famous Daniel Maclise painting The Marriage of Strongbow and Aoife to create a contemporary version. Questioning Irishness, religion, gender and history this reinterpretation will feature characters from his repertoire and the local Irish context. Posing as men, women and teenagers, his appearance evolves over the eight hour performance. The final result will be unveiled on 12 September. “2Fik throws in so many humorous curve balls that you can’t help but scratch your head admiringly and chuckle.” — Now Magazine Artistic residency supported by Generator Hostel. DJ Kormac AV Show

Festival favourite, local lad, acclaimed producer, band-leader and DJ. Kormac will perform a solo, audio visual set in a brand new show created especially for Fringe. His instantly recognisable and idiosyncratic style is unleashed as he controls, cuts, scratches and manipulates all sound and visuals using just two turntables. The twisting, morphing and shaping of sounds from other eras forms this new eclectic musicality and the show itself is no run-of-the-mill chin-stroker but a bouncing, infectious spectacle. Expect to hear cuts from his new album due for release September 2014.

Jape

Jape began in 2003 as a solo project of Dublin musician Richard Egan. Over the years, the band has evolved to become one of Ireland’s most exciting and energetic live acts blending meticulously crafted lyrics with upbeat electronic rhythms. Using an inventive mix of live instruments, hardware samplers and sequencers, the band create a sound that encompasses many different styles and spans genres, a sort of gothic pop.

Spine-tingling vocalist Tanya Tagaq can capture the most ethereal moments of desire or find the deepest, huskiest, beating pulse with her voice and breath. Her intense, evocative vocalisations, based on Inuit throat singing traditions, help reclaim the controversial 1922 documentary Nanook of the North. Tagaq, along with percussion and violin performs a live accompaniment to the film’s silent images of life in an early 20th-century Inuit community in Northern Canada. Tagaq has been performing on major stages worldwide, as well as collaborating with everyone from Björk to Kronos Quartet to Mike Patton. Dancing Suns came together as something special was created by Nina, Fabien and Sean when they hid out in a beautiful old ballroom in Celbridge during the recording of their crowd-funded album Goldmine. Nina Hynes has long been known in the Dublin scene for her songs, experimentation and theatrical performances. Fabien has spent years producing other musicians quietly in a Berlin studio. Sean Carpio is well known as a musical prodigy of sorts playing jazz with the greats form a very early age, he has developed his own sound and crosses genres mixing instruments and styles. “Stunningly melancholic with a big, big heart” — Hotpress

What was empty is what now makes it all work. Empty gestures become action. 2,500 years ago we invented a fiction called tragedy. We believed in it so much it became real. We live it now. Why can’t we get out of it? Why do we still need a fiction to live in? This is not the story of a tragic hero, it is yours. Spirit of the Fringe and Best Production winners are back with a radical visual journey to our origins. Witness the reinvention of one of the greatest tales of all time - The Oresteia.

Advocacy is a word like any other. Some people use it, some people don’t. From the company that brought you the award-winning Death of the Tradesmen, comes a new play about other people’s shoes, policy making, policy taking, participating and walking miles. Inspired by the Social Model of Disability and conceptually exploring Disability Service Provision in Ireland, it’s an act of empathy and an effort to understand. It’s about respectfully sticking your oar in, speaking up for yourself, sticking up for each other - and the importance of knowing what goes on behind closed doors. Developed with support from Rough Magic Production Support, Choices Day Programme at St. John of God Community Services for People with Intellectual Disability, the Arts Council / An Chomhairle Ealaíon, MAKE; a residential workshop facilitated by Cork Midsummer Festival, Project Arts Centre, Theatre Forum and Tiger Dublin Fringe. you told me to wash and clean my ears Amanda Coogan / Dublin Theatre of the Deaf

In 1972 the Deaf community came together at a time when they were institutionalised and marginalised in their first act of political awakening to protest the shooting dead of Eamonn McDevitt by the British Army. Days before Bloody Sunday and weeks before its burning down, they marched on the British Embassy in Dublin. This rigorously contemporary, challenging new work weaves live art and community theatre. It springs from Deaf history, primarily using Irish Sign Language. Working collaboratively for the first time at Fringe, this performance goes back to look forward to the recognition of ISL and the rights of Deaf people.

This project is gratefully supported by the Arts Council Arts Participation Bursary Award, ISL Recognition Campaign and Deaf Village Ireland. Bastard: A Family History Oddie Braddell

Oddie Braddell is an actor. You’ve probably seen him. He has appeared completely naked as a dead body in Ripper St. He has paraded an enormous pair of mustaches around the background of a crucial scene in Game of Thrones. He has been the voice of the McDonald’s Eurosaver Menu. What you probably didn’t know is that he comes from a long line of complete bastards. Bloody Braddell of Drogheda was an officer in the Cromwellian army with a particular penchant for genocide. John Waller Braddell was land agent who held the record for the highest number of evictions during the famine. What does this make Oddie? Come and find out.

Eating Seals & Seagulls’ Eggs Caitríona Ní Mhurchú/Little Wolf Productions

This is a show about super-peasants from the west. About surburbia in the eighties. About state-making. About sound. About walking in single file. About chewing seaweed. About hauling sand. About squatting. About smoking cigarettes. Touching, evocative, and sometimes funny, this poetic piece from performer and writer Caitríona Ní Mhurchú in collaboration with award-winning visual artist Adam Gibney draws on autobiographical, archive material and rare film footage to explore the loneliness and dislocation of being an Irish speaker in an urban environment, through the prism of Peig Sayers, and the beautiful, bleak landscape of the Great Blasket.

The Tale Of The Ancient Lights Riuchi

A search for destiny in an Asian legend. Through the use of modern LED technology this solo light performance awes and stuns, inviting the audience away to another land in another time. Circus, magic and dance combine in the performer’s skilled and precise movements. At once poetic, poignant and a great adventure story, this atmospheric multidisciplinary piece is suitable for all people of all ages.

Ireland / France

“…a performance vocabulary out of the ordinary. It’s a treat for the eye and an inspiration for the mind.” — Stockholm Fringe Festival Riuchi would like to thank the French Embassy in Dublin for their support. This performance contains strobe lighting.

B(r)itches Claire & Leah & Dylan

How does theatre work? When is nudity tasteful? Would you be in an ad for laxatives if they paid you five grand? If the director told you to, would you hit someone in the face as hard as you could? (No, harder than that.) Join our two performers as they grapple with these questions and many more. They’ll take you on a tour of the theatre and its history; writers and styles get picked up, crash tested, discarded. It’ll be funny, irreverent and thought-provoking (not to mention colossally silly). Do come along.

At Sea Just The Lads

Dementia is like having your life rolled up in a rug, the memories fading as they are gathered in. But within this dusty darkness imagination runs riot. Snapshots of a life emerge into the light. In unruly succession, often quiet and sometimes very loud, two musicians and one performer compose a mosaic of images, sounds and voices that make up the waning memories of one old man. Drawing on personal encounters with dementia, the team behind 2013’s The Last Post create an unforgettable performance about forgetting.

A Sacrilegious Lesbian and Homosexual Parade Brian Fleming

Everyone is Irish on St Patrick’s Day, except in New York, where LGBT groups have been banned from the St Patrick’s Day Parade for 22 years. Since 2000, the St Pat’s For All Parade in Queens has championed diversity and inclusion. With the help of the Holy Trinity (St Patrick, Panti Bliss and the Naked Cowboy), Fleming takes us for a romp through 14 years of celebration and resistance. Following sell-out one-man shows at Fringe in 2011 and 2013, this is Fleming’s third collaboration with director Raymond Keane (Barabbas).

Sick Crude Mechanics

Sick is about what happens at the end of love. It's a play about isolation and care-giving. It's a play about family and reversing roles. When fantasy is the only release and life is hell, how can you drag yourself back to reality? And what will reality mean to you? “Didn't mean to scare her. I think I just wanted her to recognise me. I've been a stranger here for over a week”. Crude Mechanics present a play about the pressures of reality and seduction of fantasy.

An arty headshot. A one man variety show. Deep, important questions about the human condition. The comedian-musician returns to the Fringe with a brand new show. “James Walmsley has all the raw sex appeal of a young Mick Jagger.” — The Guardian “Jagger cheekbones aside, Walmsley’s voice – a versatile instrument… - is key to his success.” — The Independent “To me, he's a dead-cert for Jim Morrison from The Doors.” — New Zealand Theatre Review “James Walmsley crackles with brilliant gags and charisma, bringing an unexpected tenderness to his rock’n’roll stand-up.” — The Irish Times “Teetering between genuinely funny and tepidly tedious” — entertainment.ie

Begorrah Foil Arms and Hog

This brand new show features: Christian rockers God Vibrations, the La Bullshat Theatre Group and an intervention for a teetotaler. Ireland's top comedy trio have sold out the Edinburgh Fringe for six consecutive years, have over 4 million hits on YouTube and recently completed a 30 date world tour, culminating in a sell-out show at Dublin's Vicar Street. Described as “Deliriously funny and at times unexpectedly dark” (The List), their show is a mix of theatre and comedy with wickedly twisted characters, unpredictable scenes and high energy performances.

The Belle Bottoms Eoin Colfer

Mags and Belle; two sassy ladies who have been fabulous together since junior infants. They have shared crayons, clothes, boyfriends and a lifelong love of disco music leading to the formation of The Belle Bottoms. Join them as they sing songs of nuns, restraining orders, spermy young fellas and growing up in the 1970’s. There will be flares, there will be glitter, maybe some swearing and a disco ball; if the girls can get insured. With songs by Bressie, Eleanor McEvoy, Heathers and Squeeze’s Glen Tilbrook among others. Words by Eoin Colfer, usually writing about leprechauns, it’s a step up for him.

PRESENT

An Irishman’s odyssey for identity through the nightmare landscape of a world set ablaze by 9/11. Set across North America, Christopher embarks on a wild pilgrimage home for the birth of his son, but is relentlessly thwarted by outside forces. This renegade adventure story weaves together a text rich with verbal pyro-technics, a haunting soundscape and psychedelic visuals. Written by awardwinning playwright Philip Doherty, performed by Rex Ryan (Best Actor nomination Fringe 2013) and directed by Aoife Spillane-Hinks, PILGRIM is an avalanche of voice, sound and movement through a tapestry of grotesque worlds and outlandish characters, with allusions to classical myth.

Hitting The Mark Ramblinman Theatre Company

Post-boom gloom bites and a brash American producer arrives in Ireland to revive Glenroe hoping that nostalgia will help him win the race to the bottom line. Follow the hilarious story of Eamon, a struggling actor and Ray, his body-builder best mate, as they are thrown into a bizarre world of eccentric soap-stars and cynical TV executives in this scathing satire on the delusions and pretensions of a cultural scene that is itself in need of a ‘reboot’. We Didn't Care When (our mothers had Cancer) Neil Douglas

Performer Neil’s mum had cancer. He didn't care. His reaction made him curious. In Ireland we have a strange relationship with the ‘C’ word. It's often used for entertainment. It's often discussed in hushed tones. This is a show about Cancer. It is for anyone who enjoys the light with the dark. A show about the science. About our relationship with illness. Part lecture, part theatre. A show about cell growth, soap operas and jokes. Told through the story of a young man’s ambivalence, it is an unflinching but light-hearted look at disease.

Always Alone Together Game Theory

How much do you really know about the Internet? In 1968 a Florida teenager is making free calls by whistling into the telephone. In 2008 a video of Tom Cruise turns a bunch of online pranksters into a global protest movement. In between, the Internet was born. Combining theatrical risktaking, in-depth research and old-fashioned storytelling, this is a show about how these events are connected. It’s about how everything is connected. It’s about who you can become when you don’t have to be yourself anymore. Welcome to the secret history of the digital world.

Some things grow best in the dark. In Night the air is thick, pregnant with promise, whilst flailing limbs forage in a nest of grubs and blood. Here, from a deep dank earth, Hilary Woods' detuned dream pop emerges to create a world steeped in the feel and pulse of a visceral film noir. Enkindled at the hearth of this fiercely evocative aesthetic, Woods launches her eagerly awaited EP in a spellbinding performance that fuses her “beguiling song-craft” (Hotpress) with some of her own film work.

Poor little Ireland. Trouble has beset our misfortunate country in many guises over the years… Vikings, famine, colonisation, religious oppression, a litany of sporting defeats and now a stream of manufactured bands “showcasing” Irish talent. The Whistle Squarehead Productions (Darragh McLoughlin) “When you hear the sound of the whistle you have to close your eyes. When you hear it again you may open them.” What if you were at the same time spectator and creator of a piece? A juggler, a whistle and the audience together create a multitude of moments. Time travel. Déjà vu. Glitches. Fast forward. Rewind. Déjà vu. All without techniques or special effects. A journey through several different hilarious yet often poetic narratives. Close your eyes! TURF Liadain S. Herriott Ever felt left out to dry? Cut from something greater? Inspired by the bog. A thought provoking, emotion evoking dance solo that digs deep into the territory of solitude. Once moist and wet, then sliced, stacked and set. Put in a place where the wind blew through, where carnivorous plants do what they do. All it ever was before it came to be, before the blade set it free. Expect to be lured into a parallel universe. A twisted version of Alice in Wonderland or “like something 65 out of a Lars Von Trier film”; the interpretation is yours to make.

This is a kaleidoscopic feast. As soaring voices emerge from towering creatures, lithe and raucous dance erupts against a backdrop of a projected forest. It's Star Wars, cosmology, biology, artificiality, information overload, technology. It’s my dog. It's you looking at my dog. And the slow walker sees it all. Try to understand it or just join in the madness and enjoy the show. “Sensory outburst… dismissive of theatrical conventions… clear in its intentions and delivery” — The Irish Times Funded by the Arts Council / An Chomhairle Ealaíon and Dublin City Council, supported by Dance Ireland and axis: Ballymun. The Lost Hours Maurice Kelliher

From a Spirit of the Fringe Award nominated dance theatre maker comes a poetic reimagining of real events. Fifty years ago, a young man was the final victim in an infamous series of horrific murders, but his is the only story surrounded by silence. Why? This is dance-meets-theatre, a fiction made from truth. It is a tender investigation, a defiant elegy, and a provocative exploration of how to talk about this story.

Down and Out in Paris and London By George Orwell Adapted and Performed by Phelim Drew

Charolais Noni Stapleton

A man drifting through life, in early 1930’s Paris, teaching English and generally soaking up the rich underbelly of Parisian life, finds himself falling helplessly short and discovering a very different view of life, looking up from below. With a keen understanding of social inequality and a wry sense of humour, he vividly recounts his experiences while down and out. Going from a sepia tinted view of poverty in Paris to the more black and white existence in and around London, through characters from a darkly funny circus to the inhabitants of a Beckettian landscape.

“I watch him pull the cow from the ditch with his bare hands, her big eyes rest on me dead calm as he leans into her and she gives in all trust. I hate that fuckin’ cow”. Perfectly marbled and bashed about ‘til tender: a surreal comedy of love, longing and one woman’s intense rivalry with a Charolais heifer. This is a muddy place of simmering desire minced with a loneliness that cuts to the bone. If you are fond of cows and dark humour this is the show for you. ***** — Sunday Business Post for Two for a Girl. Supported by the Arts Council / An Chomhairle Ealaíon.

There’s a fine line between failure and misery. Often, there’s no line at all. Just ask this secondrate children’s theatre company, whose members all fantasise about the lives they could have led had they not been held back by each other. Uncensored and irreverent - with a sprinkling of show-stopping tunes - these failed entertainers are brought to life just as they are gifted one last, desperate shot at success. This show is for fans of punchline-heavy comedy at breakneck speed, and anyone who has never followed their dream and wants to feel good about it.

Each day during Fringe three dancers visit the Royal Hibernian Academy, which hosts the retrospective exhibition of celebrated landscape artist Maria Simonds-Gooding. Separately, they playfully collect movement ideas inspired by the art work and its surroundings. In the second week, renowned fiddle player Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh takes on the routine. On the final day, they all meet. Before your eyes they tease out, confront and instantly compose each other's gathered discoveries creating a rapidly shifting improvised performance. This revealing and fresh process marks the first-ever choreographic collaboration with the RHA.

Severaldozenhowlingheadsdeconstructingthebull– shitinacacophonyof Colour. Sound. Words. Movement. Drone. Our heads are heavy, our hearts are hungry. We need to work through some stuff. We're calling for an expulsion. An exercise in freedom. We're in a head on collision with the fragmenting effects of the human experience. All that isolates the individual from the whole. We're done with that now. Following the sold out success of last year's show GRINDR / a love story comes a brand new beast. Whip out your freak flag and join us in an immersive celebration through spoken word and drones. This is the sound of the human spirit humming eternally: “I am here, here are we. ZOMBIES why death is dying or are you working hard enough? Ruairí Donovan

“This uprising is not a form of judgement, but a form of healing” (Franco ‘Bifo’ Berardi, The Uprising). Imagine a world that operates differently to this one; what does it look like? Beginning at Midnight and ending at Dawn performers will become mediators and audience will become collaborators as we engage risk, intimacy and collective action to imagine a new future while the rest of the country is fast asleep. This is an act of resistance; there is no crisis of economy only a crisis of imagination for the future! Bring your pyjamas and sleeping bags for an all-nighter that won’t be forgotten!

Clu presents Gems

Dublin electronic duo Clu debut a brand new audio/visual show at this year's Fringe. They have wowed audiences at festivals such as Electric Picnic, Body & Soul and Life Festival along with a unique showcase at the Mansion House earlier this year. They have a very distinctive approach to their live show with Kevin Freeney's visual art element just as important as Sean Cooley's music which accompanies it. This connection between the two forms an ambitious chemistry which is set to hit a new level at the Fringe this year. Think Amon Tobin's ISAM meets Stop Making Sense‌

Tiger Dublin Fringe Awards 2014 Our awards exist to recognise, reward and celebrate the hard work and talent on display in the festival each year. Hundreds of artists bring their intelligence, heart, vision and drive to projects at the Fringe. They light up the city, our minds and our souls. The awards hope to honour their commitment, ingenuity, excellence and oldfashioned hard work and acknowledge some of the stand-outs in this year’s festival.

Best Production Presented to the show, production or event that has it all, displaying excellence in every area of production, design, performance, concept and execution. It acknowledges the enormous work and talent that is poured into presenting work at the festival and honours the comprehensive production. 2013’s winner was LIPPY presented by Dead Centre. Best Design The award presented for 100 outstanding lighting, sound, scenic, projection, costume or overall design. The 2013 winner was LIPPY for overall design. Best Performers Two of the best performers of the festival take home this much sought-after prize from a field of up to ten nominees. Formerly given to best male and female, we’re broadening the category to suit performers of all genderidentification. 2013’s winners were Genevieve Hulme-Beaman (Pondling) and Ray Scannell (DEEP). Best Ensemble Sometimes it’s the entire cast that makes the show. A new award that recognises the standout efforts of a group of performers on stage. Judge’s Choice A new award for the judges to recognise a project, contributor, experience or Fringe event that defies categorisation and is just too good to pass by unheralded.

Fishamble New Writing Award For the best play by a new or emerging Irish (or Ireland-based) playwright premiered during Tiger Dublin Fringe, this award includes the prize of a scholarship place on one of Fishamble’s acclaimed playwriting courses, dramaturgical support and a stipend towards the playwright’s next play, generously supported by Fishamble: The New Play Company. The idea of new writing is interpreted broadly to include new works in the area of dance, performance art, music, multi-author, post-dramatic works and so on. Last year’s winner was Dylan Coburn Gray for Boys and Girls (2013). First Fortnight Award Since its inception in 2009, First Fortnight’s key aim has been to challenge stigma and prejudice about mental health issues through the creative arts. This award recognises excellence in a Fringe show that does just that, inviting it back for an encore run at First Fortnight Mental Health Arts Festival in January 2015. 2013’s recipient was Sorcha Kenny for DOLLS. For further information on First Fortnight visit www.firstfortnight.ie

Next Stage Wild Card Tiger Dublin Fringe awards a bursary to an artist who has been part of the festival, enabling them to participate in the Next Stage – an artist development programme run by Dublin Theatre Festival in partnership with Theatre Forum. Producer Aisling Murray won in 2013. Bewley’s Café Theatre Little Gem Award Bewley’s Café Theatre is Ireland’s foremost presenter of lunchtime theatre and is delighted and proud to continue to sponsor the Bewley’s Café Theatre ‘Little Gem’ Award for the most exciting show presented at this year’s festival under 60 minutes. The selection is made by the jury for final approval by Bewley’s Café Theatre. The prize is a handsome one; the winning production earns a two-week run at Bewley’s Café Theatre with €2,000 available to the company for remounting the production. Janet Moran and Steve Blount won with SWING in 2013. Spirit of the Fringe Commissioning Award Tiger Dublin Fringe and Project Arts Centre are taking a year off to revamp and rethink a new award that brings a Fringe artist into the fold of Project Arts Centre. Meanwhile, 2013 Spirit of the Fringe Winner Louise White (Way Back Home) is hard at work on a new project that will unfold in 2015 supported by both Fringe and Project.

Tiger Dublin Fringe identifies, curates and nurtures emerging artists. FRINGE LAB provides year round practical and artistic support, responding to their needs and indeed those of independent more established artists. There is huge demand for these supports which are pivotal in shaping the work of a new generation of Irish performing artists, amplifying their presence on the world stage. These artists’ work is devised, demanding collaboration. As the arts sector diverges from individual companies each with its own administration, at a basic level, professional performing artists need somewhere to work. We provide that space at Fringe HQ, with two large studios (Studio 1: a dedicated, free space for development of new work and Studio 2: used for our series of workshops, masterclasses, special events and also available for hire at a very competitive rate), writer’s room (the CELL) and our drop in Artists’ Office (complete with PC, free wifi and printer); all backed up by access to our own in-house expertise, and an ongoing schedule of workshops, masterclasses, resource sharing activities and networking opportunities such as FRINGE FUSE and elevenses. Last year we provided over 3,000 hours of free studio space to artists based in Dublin and beyond, making FRINGE LAB a vital hub for artists making work in this city and this country. To find out more about FRINGE LAB please visit fringefest.com/lab or contact emma@fringefest.com. FRINGE LAB is part funded by the Arts Council’s Theatre Resource Sharing Initiative and Dublin City Council’s Arts Office.

Turning 21 in 2015?

We are too - wanna celebrate together? Come be part of our birthday next year. We’re looking for a posse of 21 year-olds to help put together the next Fringe with us. 21 year-old artists, fans, experts, dreamers, adventurers, buzzers and loveens from across Dublin are sought to make shows, propose programming, use our studios and make the festival into the most legendary 21st the city’s ever seen! Let’s raise the key to the city high over our heads. Contact kris@fringefest.com for more information and to get involved!

Where We Are

A project by design agency Aad, Where We Are is a year long look at Ireland through the eyes of 12 Irish photographers. A reaction to the narrow view and talking in circles represented by the phrase “We are where we are”, our hope is that by looking, not talking, we might get a clearer sense of where we are. IGUDESMAN & JOO A Little Nightmare Music 15 Dec 8pm at Christmas Mon at the National Concert Hall

“Having had the great pleasure to have shared a stage with my friends Aleksey Igudesman and Hyung-ki Joo, I can tell you…they are extremely funny, very original, and highly-skilled musicians to boot. Their mix of classical music and comedy is absolutely unique.” John Malkovich

Aleksey Igudesman and Hyung-ki Joo are two classical musicians who have taken the world by storm with their unique and hilarious theatrical shows, mixing genres and styles with hearty doses of humour. Yet, while their spin may be irreverent, they always treat the music with the utmost respect. Behind all the laughs is the very serious mission of winning new audiences for this art form they both love so much. An entertaining and engaging show for the whole family this Christmas.
