EDITOR'S NOTES
T
he iconic American folk hero Daniel Boone once said, “I was happy in the midst of dangers and inconveniences.” Stories of his life and exploits as an explorer and frontiersman in the 19th century became the stuff of legends and folklore. Instead of a horse, just imagine what Boone could have done with a Jeep Gladiator today. Tall tales may never be written about us, but we are all modern day Daniel Boones and the adventure of a lifetime won’t require plane flights, 5-star hotel stays or two weeks worth of luggage. All we need is a reliable rig, fuel, supplies, imagination and the hunger to explore the vast outdoors. All the “dangers and inconveniences” you’ll encounter with your rig guarantees the highest grade of fun you’ll ever have and a lifetime of great memories to share with family and friends. This is why Adventure Rigs was born - to ignite and inspire you to go out and explore the world around you on four wheels. Adventure Rigs is a meticulously curated outdoor lifestyle journal that blurs the line between automotive enthusiast and outdoor adventurer, showcasing purpose-built vehicles that are equipped to handle various situations. For our inaugural issue, we sought out individuals who crave adventure and built vehicles to fuel their passion and desires - we’ve captured their stories and share with you their photographs for inspiration. Marco Hernandez got himself a Jeep Wrangler and built a capable rig to take him and his cameras to hard to get to epic locations to cultivate his love for scenic photography. Marco is also quite the culinarian so he took his strong interest in cooking gourmet food in the kitchen to the trails and published a book on backcountry cooking called The Overland Cook. The third generation 4Runner (1996-2002) and first generation Tacoma (1996-2004) were, and still are solid platforms to build upon. Armed with a reputation for performance, reliability and a vast aftermarket availability of parts, we caught up with a couple of adventure seekers who transformed their Toyotas to suit their specific needs. Professional photographer Micah Weber lives in the central coast of California and is a real gearhead. Growing up wrenching with his dad, he was able to continue the legacy with his 2001 Toyota Tacoma that he outfitted with a few “home-brewed” mods to handle the off-road and backcountry adventures he always dreamed of taking. Hopefully, Micha’s son Christian develops a strong interest in car tinkering so the legacy continues on! When we came across photos of Canadian Chris Wilson’s 1999 Hilux Surf (4Runner) we knew we had to get the evolution story of his Toyota.
8
It was fascinating to discover Chris’s thought process and motivations for transforming his rig from stock form to its current long-travel beast configuration that’s capable of going over or through any terrain and situation he finds himself in. SoCal resident and YouTuber Rob Daman has been a car junkie ever since he could remember. As a previous owner of a couple of trucks, a “rice rocket,” and a couple Bimmers, Rob’s admiration for Toyotas never faded. His 2017 Toyota Tacoma is the star of his YouTube channel. He’s done numerous DIYs on his upgrades and has inspired other Tacoma fans on their modification journey. He’s even got his young son, Jesse, helping him wrench on the Hard Shell Taco. Industry professionals are biggest enthusiasts around. We caught up with Bond Gilmer of Rebel Off Road and Lonnie McCurry Jr. of Skyjacker to hear more about their expertise, advice, and passions. Bond breaks down his early experiences in overlanding and how the journey continues in his shop and all the amazing builds he gets to work on. Lonnie has given the new Jeep Gladiator more than a thorough shakedown and gives us a rundown of his first impression of Jeep’s new truck and some behind-the-scenes info on how Skyjacker developed a new suspension for it. Tim Grachen is an industry vet in building custom trucks and has shared his knowledge and expertise working with various aftermarket companies. With deep roots in automotive culture, his excitement for the desert required a capable vehicle to adventure in, so he upgraded to a Polaris RZR XP 1000 to fulfill his needs. Thanks for joining us on this journey to bring you stories that will help spark interest in the outdoors and inspire you to take your rig out and explore. Enjoy Issue 1!

BLACK RHINO RENO BEADLOCK 800.479.9723 | BLACKRHINOWHEELS.COM /BLACKRHINOTRUCKWHEELS | @BLACKRHINOWHEELS For 2019, Black Rhino Wheels introduces two new true beadlock wheels engineered specifically for off-road use. Inspired by the yearly Vegas-to-Reno truck races, the allnew Reno Beadlock is named after the finish line of the grueling 550-mile desert race. The Reno Beadlock wheel uses a beefed-up 6-spoke design accented by robust spoke reinforcements, which are emphasized by an aggressive concave profile. Expanding upon the Crawler Beadlock and Garrison Beadlock styles, the Reno Beadlock wheel is engineered for 5-and 6-lug trucks. For the first time, the Black Rhino Reno Beadlock is also offered with three standard finishes including: Candy Red with Black Ring and Black Bolts, Matte Black with Black Bolts, and Silver with Mirror Face and Silver Bolts. As with the other Black Rhino beadlock wheel styles, the Reno Beadlock is exclusively available in 17x8.5 with aggressive ET-38, ET-30, and ET0 offsets.
FIFTEEN52 ANALOG HD 213.373.1552 | FIFTEEN52.COM /FIFTEEN52 | @FIFTEEN52 Fifteen52 introduces the Analog HD, which is a modern rendition of classic style. As they continue on their journey to remap off-road performance for everyday use, they thought it’d be a good idea to bring back a classic steel wheel, with some minor adjustments and added functionality. So they went to the drawing board and started with an all-aluminum construction to reduce unsprung weight, added some dimension to the center section that would channel airflow through the slotted pockets to your brake system, and included a reinforced flange design. Currently it’s available in Slate Grey and Asphalt Black finishes in 16x7.5 and 17x8.5 sizes and in popular 5-and 6-lug applications. 12

The cast Zephyr is available in three finishes: Matte Bronze, Candy Red and Matte Black. The wheel is offered in 17x9 and 20x9 sizes and in all the popular bolt sizes (5x5, 5x5.5, 5x150, 6x5.5 & 6x135) to start, with additional sizes to follow. It’s modeled after their true beadlock Zephyr, so it features rugged off-road styling in a daily driver configuration. The beadlock version is a hybrid cast beadlock with forged ring and is engineered to take whatever you can throw at it and look good doing so. (Candy Red and Matte Black only come in a 17x9.5 size and 5-and 6-lug bolt patterns, 6-lug beadlock for off-road use only.)

TIRE TALK
THE NEW W YOKOHAMA GEOLANDAR X-AT
e were recently invited on an exclusive driving experience with the new Yokohama Geolandar X-AT, which is the seventh model in the Geolandar family of adventure tires, making it one of the most diverse lineups in the industry. It’s also the third in the Geolandar X-series line of “in-between” and “extreme” offerings, according to Fardad Niknam, Yokohama’s Senior Director of Marketing and Planning. The other two are the X-CV for luxury sport crossovers and their flagship offroad, rock-crawling X-MT mud terrain. A quick, but focused, product briefing with Mr. Niknam prior to the ride-and-drive delivered on four main aspects of the X-AT: Durability thanks to improved puncture resistance because of GEO-SHIELD technology. The tire features multiple sidewall piles, a high turn-up carcass and a full nylon cap while being lighter than some competitors.
18
Long tread life is a lock with Yokohama’s new high-density HD2 compound. It’s made of a special triple-polymer blend engineered for reliable long tread life and impressive cut- and chip-resistance. An elliptical contact area provides balanced performance of off-road traction with long even wear. The X-AT is backed by a 45,000-mile limited treadwear warranty and their 30-day money back guarantee. A quiet, comfortable ride is guaranteed due to the zig-zag grooves that interrupt airflow to limit unwanted sound. Additionally, the tread features are staggered in a five block sequence that add to the reduction in pattern and road noise. Gripping off-road traction is achieved by aggressive, large shoulder blocks that are varied in length to create a biting edge and promote mud- and stone-ejection. Also, the angular offset center block clusters provide extra strength and grip. Sipes and narrow grooves are combined on each tread block to provide traction on wet, snow and slick rock surfaces.
The X-AT will also include load-range F-sizes for heaving carry capacities, plus a dual sidewall (named Mesa and Summit ) design, giving owners the option of picking a look to match their vehicle. With an initial 27 size offerings – from 15” to 22” diameters and up to 37” tall. The varying terrain in the Mojave Desert (just south of Las Vegas) was our test track, and who better to trail boss the course other than the owner of The Mint 400, Matt Martelli. Matt lead our caravan of Ford Raptors and a Jeep JL south of the city where we were able to sample the X-ATs on-road manners. Quiet is an understatement, granted the tires were new and we were in a new Ford Raptor. Nothing scientific was done to audibly test road noise other than shutting off the radio, and eventually lowering the windows to see if we could detect anything. The subtle notes from the exhaust drowned out anything we could hear from the tires - they were that quiet.

19
TIRE TALK
After about 10 miles, we made it off-pavement to test its capabilities through varying terrain of fire roads, rocky washes, sand and silt as well as through slow and technical portions of the The Mint 400 course, where the X-ATs footing would be challenged. Midway through the drive, we were lucky enough to do a few high-speed passes through an empty Jean Dry Lake bed. Unsurprisingly, the X-ATs performed as expected and traction was never in question and inspired confidence through sketchy situations. As consumer demand continues to grow for an off-road tire that performs better than an allterrain, and almost as good as mud-terrain, the Geolandar X-AT fulfills that void. The extreme all-terrain tire redefines the term rugged, offering pickup trucks, Jeeps, and SUV owners a tire with excellent off-road performance that doesn’t sacrifice on-road comfort, making it a great performance upgrade for dual purpose daily work and weekend adventure rigs.

SKYJACKER 2.5”, 3.5”, AND 4.5” SUSPENSION SYSTEMS FOR THE 2020 JEEP GLADIATOR 318.388.0816 | SKYJACKER.COM |

@SKYJACKER
Skyjacker Suspensions has released its new suspension family for the 2020 Jeep Gladiator Truck. Skyjacker now has 2.5”, 3.5”, and 4.5” full suspension systems for all 3 available lift heights. These suspension systems are equipped with our Dual Rate-Long Travel coil springs. The Dual Rate-Long Travel coils are both Dual Rate & Long Travel in one unique coil spring design. The Dual Rate allows for an exceptional highway ride as the coils travel in the 1st lighter spring rate during light suspension movement while the second higher rate only engages during coil compression for consistent control and stability during heavy off-road suspension movement. Long Travel allows the top stack of the coils to expand as the terrain changes. This allows for maximum suspension droop which keeps the tires in contact with the ground much longer and keeps the coil springs from being displaced from their upper coil bucket.

JEEP GLADIATOR JT L WORDS: LONNIE MCCURRY JR. // PHOTOS COURTESY OF SKYJACKER
onnie and Nell McCurry of Skyjacker Suspension started their career in a small shop they created in their backyard. With a passion for racing and mud digging, Lonnie wanted to grow the hobby that he and his friends loved so much. Lonnie soon realized that in order to win and reign supreme, the trucks they used needed to be equipped with larger tires and a better lift. Because of this, Lonnie turned his hobby into a business and Skyjacker was born out of his love for fabricating and the sport. The first Skyjacker product was for a Bronco and now 45 years later (with the same owners), the name has become synonymous for having a quality product in the industry. They now have more than 10 family members working for the business, continuing the passion and love for the sport that first fueled Lonnie all those years back. We had an opportunity to interview Lonnie McCurry Jr. on his thoughts about the new Gladiator JT and what he and the crew at Skyjacker had developed for it.

[ FIRST IMPRESSIONS ] I have been very interested in a Jeep Gladiator as a personal daily driver for quite some time, so I enjoyed following all the spy photos and any pre-launch information available. I even went to the Los Angeles Auto Show last year to see the first models unveiled and found myself investigating and admiring its uniqueness. While I heard Jeep would keep the iconic ability to remove the top and doors, I was surprised how good that actually looks on a pickup truck when I first saw it! From the underside, the rear is completely different than its Wrangler sibling, yet not simply a Ram truck rear, either. The most important factor was that Jeep maintained solid axles, which is key for affordable aftermarket modifications. When I finally picked mine up and after some test driving and a fair workout, the Gladiator was notably comfortable and nimble, especially for a truck. Many times I had to remind myself that I did find the rear to be a less flexible (less suspension droop) than a JL, but again impressive for a stock truck.
At 6’1” the interior room is ample for me, and seats (Jeep leather option) are very comfortable. All the interior controls, buttons and switches were all in good reach and weather resistant. I have since spent some long days on the highway and on the trail. I was comfortable all day in both situations with good placement of the armrests and console. The only thing I would prefer is a bigger horsepower option, but don’t mistake that as a complaint because partnered with the smooth 8-speed transmission, the Gladiator is not really underpowered. But who doesn’t want more power? The Gladiator is an overall winner! On the first weekend, I loaded up some lawn equipment and my son said, “How cool is it to do truck things with a Jeep!” I’ve had that feeling many times since.
[ RESEARCHED AND DEVELOPED ] At Skyjacker, we build suspensions for adventures, daily driving and everything in between. The Gladiator is quite possibly the best vehicle ever built to fit this lifestyle. After having reviewed both the JT and the JL in their stock form, we found the rear-wheel travel to be less than the JL. Since the Gladiator needed to retain “truck” functionality, we worked hard designing special rear coils to allow for offroad articulation but also control loads from hauling or towing. We did that with a 2-stage Variable rate design: the first stage has some tightly wound coils that can expand offroad to allow for extended suspension droop; the second stage is a variable rate that increases through the suspension travel to slow it down as approaching the bump stops.

RIG REVIEW
We now offer 2.5”, 3.5” and 4.5” lifts focused on all new coil springs that further enhance the multipurpose uses of this vehicle. While we did develop some metal coil spacers, we don’t feel those really mess with the possibilities this Gladiator has to offer. We designed new front coils for the Gladiator (not just using JL coils), and utilize eight new rear coils. Our lifts are specific for Rubicon and non-Rubicon models so no one is guessing which lift to use or how much lift will be gained. We use specific shock absorbers that are valved-matched to our coil spring rates for these Gladiators. My personal favorite for the JT is the M95 Monotube shocks, with matching dual steering damper kit for larger tires. I use the same suspension we sell and every time I’m behind the wheel it’s about testing and finding ways
YOU’RE NEVER REALLY FINISHED BUILDING AND PERSONALIZING A JEEP, AND THAT’S JUST PART OF THE FUN AND VERSATILITY.” to improve. That is something my dad taught me and one of the reasons Skyjacker is now 45 years strong. Other than local Louisiana testing, I have already wheeled the JT on the Ultimate Adventure for a week in Alaska, then on the JT Experience
from New York through the New England area ending in Maine, and I’m currently on the JT & JL Experience. Needless to say, I’ve traveled many miles in it and through diverse terrain. I also have Easter Jeep Safari marked on the calendar and 2020 is open to a lot of possibilities. Aside from the suspension, I’ve added a few goodies to the Gladiator, including Ultimate 60 axles from Dana with ARB lockers; 40” Milestar Patagonia M/T tires on 17” Raceline beadlock wheels; bumpers, fenders and rockers from Fab Fours; a Warn Zeon 10-S winch; hydraulic steering from PSC; and aluminum skid plates underneath from Artec Industries. I also added Rigid lighting mods, such as their Adapt light bar, fog lights, and cowl mounted Pro Dually lights. For comms I have Rugged Radios, a DiamondBack bed cover to keep my gear dry, elements-free and safe. And earlier, I mentioned I wish there were more options for power, so I added more in the form of a Hellcat motor swap package by America’s Most Wanted 4x4. You’re never really finished building and personalizing a Jeep, and that’s just part of the fun and versatility. These modifications have given me a footing to build upon for anything I want this Gladiator to do and because of that, I could not be happier!

[ STARTING ON TWO WHEELS ] I started riding dirt bikes when I was a kid. I went from an 800cc Yamaha in 1978 to different bikes over the years. My last bike was an XR650, which I got rid of about 12 years ago. Over the years, I’ve owned different off-road vehicles and have been involved in off-roading in one way or another. The first off-road vehicle I ever built was a 1996 80-Series Land Cruiser and the reliability of it was the best thing about it. I picked up a Jeep Wrangler a few years ago because their Rubicon version was a solid base to start a new off-road build. My OVRLNDX Jeep JKU is actually my second Jeep. My first Jeep was my dad’s old XJ that I loved to drive everywhere back in the day. So, you can say that I’ve always liked Jeeps.
[ ONE THING LEADS TO ANOTHER ] Besides off-roading, my other passion is photography, which is another reason why I purchased the Jeep. I wanted a vehicle capable enough to take me and my cameras to those awesome shoot locations. I’ve been interested in photography ever since I got my first Minolta AE1 and I also love camping and exploring, so the Jeep is perfect for that, too. I do a lot of research when it’s time to pick parts for the build. I also tend to go with brands that have a good reputation in the industry. I do most of the work myself, but not when it comes to fluid changes. It’s kind of a hassle to dispose of old fluids without harming the environment so I leave that up to the professionals.

My Jeep also does have a lot of custom parts like the drawer system in the back which I designed and built myself using aluminum extrusions and bracketry, wood and carpet lining materials. Also in the works is a custom air down/up system that I’m working out the kinks on. My favorite mods on the Jeep would have to be the wheels, tires, and suspension. Oh, and the rooftop tent. I can safely go to remote, picturesque and uncrowded places without the risk of getting stuck and I can spend more than a day doing it by having a safe and comfortable sleeping area. As a member of the overland community, I’ve learned a lot from others in the scene over the years. This community is like a family and I’ve met the most wonderful people ever! I’ve met several of my best friends through overlanding. I can’t over emphasize how much I like the Teraflex long arm suspension because it offers the best on- and off-the-pavement ride and performance. The Genesis dual battery system also gives me so much peace of mind that my Jeep will always have enough juice to crank up even in Arctic weather. Recently, I went to 38” Milestar Patagonia tires...come on 38s! Although I like how my Jeep is set up already, there’s no end when building a Jeep! I’ll probably do a motor swap in the future given this Jeep already hit the 114K-mile mark on the original engine.

[ ADVENTURES OF A LIFETIME ] One of my most memorable trips with the Jeep was a 10-day camping trip to Utah and Colorado. We camped in 100-degree weather in Utah and 29-degree weather in Colorado. We were wheelin’ in the most epic red rock trails in Moab and driving through astonishing mountain passes in Ouray. But when it comes to a local hangout, Anza Borrego is where I go. That desert is just full of beauty, with its amazing sandstone canyons and beautiful desert plants that look out of this world. It also offers hundreds of miles of off-road trails and numerous camping spots. I’ve been to a lot of places, but the most challenging trails I’ve ever done is Black Bear Pass in Colorado. Even though it’s not technically challenging, it sure is mentally tiring. My Jeep didn’t suffer any scars during the trip, but I was exhausted after coming down those narrow switchbacks. There were a lot of whiteknuckle moments on that one! A while back, my pals and I discovered that eating good and tasty food was totally possible while camping or on the trails during our overlanding trips. Since I don’t eat meat, there aren’t many options out there for easyto-prepare camping food. It didn’t take long before I brought the home kitchen to the trails and campsites. Almost everything you see in the trunk of my Jeep is my devotion to outdoor
36
cooking, good food and healthy eating. The ARB freezer keeps perishables fresh and my drinks cold. The custom cabinetry holds my pots, pans, plates, cups, roasted coffee and spices, which are all nicely organized in separate drawers. I installed a Powertank propane bottle mount on the C-pillar for my skottle. Because of my love for cooking gourmet meals on the trail and with the admonition of close friends, I published a book called “The Overland Cook” to give outdoor adventurers some of the food possibilities while they’re out enjoying nature. People shouldn’t limit themselves to eating Mountain House on the trails. I have a tuna dish in the cookbook that you’ll love and is easy to prepare at camp. So far, the cookbook has been selling well!

[ FAIL TO PLAN, PLAN TO FAIL ] Even though the destination isn’t always set in stone, I do plan a route, download any maps needed, determine fuel and supply stops and mark waypoints and camping spots. I also check for camping rules for the area to know beforehand. It’s also important to determine the number of vehicles in the caravan. The group has to tread lightly to prevent any trail damage. I usually always check everything all the time, especially the suspension components that tend to come loose after an off-road trip. It’s also important to bring extra nuts and bolts, fluid and tools, just in case.
To keep up with Marco and his adventures follow him at @ovrlndx and if you like cooking check out his book, The Overland Cook, at ovrlndx.com

It’s also important that you don’t go alone. I always travel with another vehicle as capable and prepared as mine. Bringing some type of communication device is also very important. Never go alone to places that you are not familiar with. Know your vehicle’s and your own limitations. Let someone at home know where you will be at all times.
Get familiar with the trails and tread lightly. Have a “pack it in, pack it out” philosophy. Educate yourself and understand why you are not supposed to bring firewood to camp. Instead, buy it where you’ll burn it or gather firewood on-site, if permitted. Learn about human waste disposal, too!

e came across a few photos that Chris Wilson posted of his Hilux Surf in the 3rd Gen 4runner Mafia page on Facebook and instantly knew we had to reach out and talk shop about his wide, long-travelled, right hand drive Yota on 37s.
[ WITH A PURPOSE ] I’ve always been very interested in the outdoors and used to hike all over British Columbia, Canada, for extended periods of time. But then I realized that I could build something that would actually allow me to go experience and see even more. I had practically no knowledge in the automotive world previously, other than small things I learned from my dad and I ended up teaching myself how to do everything. Before the Toyota, I owned a Ford Ranger, but that doesn’t really count. However, I did camp in it and would often tear up dirt roads with it. I picked a Toyota because they have always been a part of my family, so I knew I wanted one for myself one day. The Hilux Surf was the right price and had low miles on it; that’s the benefit of importing it from Japan, they don’t do much driving there. It became my first true build and my favorite part about it was the fact that I was able to get creative with it. The beauty of these vehicles is that you can take it anywhere you want as long as its equipped to do so. Growing up hiking, I always had to make decisions on what I actually needed to bring because I was carrying it on my back. With a vehicle, I can always pack more than what I need and this has helped me out a lot. Whether it’s something just for comfort or for safety, it’s always nice to have those extra things.

[ THE EVOLUTION ] The Surf went through several stages and it’s hard to pinpoint where each one started and began. The suspension alone was changed five or more times and the tires have gone from 31s to 33s to 35s and now 37s. It was more of an overlander at one point with lots of things strapped to it, but now it’s more purpose-built and focused, able to tackle anything. That was the whole vision behind the build; to provide me with more access to the outdoors beyond what the average person can achieve on foot. Camping and exploring have always been major motivators for me.

1999 TO Y OTA HILU X SURF
I mainly did all the work on the truck myself, except for rebuilding a few differentials I had blown up over the years. Also, the front bumper was fabricated by a friend. He and I took a stab at the design and it seemed to work out pretty well! Beyond that, everything else is custom the roof rack, drawer system, center console, the 4WD setup, etc. The most unique mods on the rig include the completely manual 4WD system, front bumper and winch and the long travel suspension with 37s. As per most modern vehicles, vacuum-and electronic-powered 4WD systems are the norm. I have had a few little issues with my system and have almost gotten stranded because of it. As a result, I swapped a fully manual transfer case into the truck and have manual hubs. Now everything bypasses the electronic system and it’s much more controlled. The winch has saved me multiple times. Not only when I have been stuck on my own, but also pulling me onto the road when my differential was blown up. A trailer was able to get me home from the trail I was on. The suspension and 37s are great that make it fun to drive on-and offroad, but it does make the truck incredibly wide. Upfitting is a never-ending process and the next steps are a wider rear axle and a 4.7L 2UZ engine. I’m already looking for a donor firstgeneration Tundra. I’ll also do a rear bumper and tire carrier later on.

I’ve been on plenty of adventures, but the most memorable trip I’ve been on with the truck is the Oregon Dunes. It was the second time my truck had been there, but it’s always a great time driving around on the dunes and beaches. We got stuck one night in the dunes and had to hike out and leave the truck to recover it in the morning. I’ve been lucky and haven’t really damaged the truck too much on any trails and I’ve pushed the truck to its limits on three or even two wheels. Thanks to the 37s and long travel suspension, it practically floats over most things. Even some of the more challenging rock trails feel pretty simple. British Columbia has about 40,000 miles of forest service roads that access all of my favorite trails. It’s so hard to pick a local favorite because
there are so many choices. Every time you have something you really like you always find something that’s even better. If a trip is far, I research the spots well in advance to know where I can go and what I have time for. If the trip is local, I usually talk to people in our community to get an idea of where to go. Google maps and Backroad Mapbooks are also a huge asset. To get ready for a trip, I check all driveline applications for excessive play, any noises and then grease them down. I drive the truck every day, so I’m monitoring issues all the time. But I also bring spare parts with me, especially on longer trips. I usually bring things like ball joints and some seals/bolts. My next trip will be to Alaska. I’ve been up north to the Yukon once, but never Alaska and I really want to see the Arctic Ocean.

e recently caught up with Tim Grachen and his tricked-out RZR XP 1000. Tim is an industry vet in building custom trucks and is also a project manager at Pilot Automotive with the Bully Truck Accessories brand and various other truck accessories their company offers.
[ ROOTS ] I’ve been in the off-road scene since I was in diapers. My second homes were either in the desert or the river growing up. But my first foot in the door to the automotive industry was when I was 16 and got my first truck – a 1972 Chevrolet C20. My passion only grew from there, and my first off-road vehicle was a 1991 Chevrolet S10, with a CST long travel kit. I remember my first build quite vividly as if it were yesterday. My favorite thing about it, or any build, is spending all of my free time working hard on it and then slowly seeing that idea come to life. I’ve been working on my own vehicles since I got my first truck. It was back in 2007 when I started off in the
UTV scene, with a brand new Yamaha Rhino 660. Then as the years past, side-by-sides only got faster and faster, and I felt it was time to step up my game and sell the Rhino to purchase this Polaris RZR. It was stock for about a week until I started ripping it apart to put new mods on it.
[ LET THE MODDIN’ BEGIN ] I try to do at least some of the work myself, and what I can’t do, I rely on shops that I trust to take care of what I need done. When it came time to choose which parts I wanted for the RZR, I did some heavy research and spoke to many people in the industry prior to pulling the trigger on anything. Once I chose the parts I wanted, I reached out to the companies directly and picked their brains until I was 100% comfortable I was making the right decision. I’d say my favorite mods and upgrades are my long travel suspension made by Long Travel Industries, all my Rigid Lighting that is essential for night rides and my S&B Filters Particle Separator, which keeps my air filter clean (so my motor stays clean, too). Upfitting is definitely a never-ending process that I’m very familiar with and at this point I would say my RZR is about 95% finished. The last few things I’d like to add would be a radio and intercom, so I can speak to my passenger and other drivers when I go out driving in a group. Communication is key and having tunes while out on an adventure makes it even more enjoyable!
Long Travel Industries +4 Long Travel Kit paired with Elka Stage 5 2.5 front and 3.0 rear shocks combined with Vision Wheels and Terra Master tires soaks up the choppy stuff.

UTV Speed Inc fastback cage with attached rear bumper and front bumper with lollipop red skid plate keeps the RZR protected and looing sharp.
[ THE FUN ] Since I’m mostly a desert guy, my two favorite places to ride would be the Barstow area and Johnson Valley near Hammer Town in my home state of California. But some of the most fun trails I’ve been on were located in Johnson Valley, which includes desert terrain, dry lake beds, sand dunes, climbing up mountains and a bit of rock climbing...it has pretty much every type of terrain to challenge you! Riding out gives me such a sense of freedom and definitely takes me away from all the stresses and worries in life so that I actually have time to enjoy myself, friends, and family while I’m out. WORDS/PHOTOS: MICAH WEBER
[ THE BACKSTORY ] My name is Micah Weber, and right now we are living on the beautiful central coast of California, in San Luis Obispo. I’ve lived up and down the west coast and moved more than 25 times between Oregon, Washington and California. I’m a photographer by profession, but I’ve been super blessed to have grown up in a fantastic family, with a dad always wrenching on cars. If the family car ever went to a shop, he included us whenever he could in the repairs. It was a great way to grow up and it definitely shaped my childhood and way of thinking about problems in general.
I can’t remember a time when I wasn’t in love with all things motorized and off-road. Between the ages of 8 to 11, I lived on a large farm in Oregon and have a clear memory of wheeling with my dad and brothers in a red Pontiac Fiero on some mountain roads. Just as we crested the top of the steep mudded bank with the tiny engine wailing under my dad’s heavy foot, a giant lifted Bronco came around the corner and the shocked faces of the driver and passengers had all of us laughing all the way home that night. Now, being a young father, it as been such an incredible gift to bring my son with me on adventures. You can just see the light in his eye when we are out together enjoying nature and it’s just such a great way to spend quality time together.
[ THE RIG ] I actually just got the truck the beginning of this year back in February, so I haven’t really had it that long at all. I had just sold my wife’s daily driver and had the cash at the house for something new. I’ve always planned on owning a truck or SUV that was set up for exploring and off-roading but hadn’t had the chance to yet. So I was excited to finally be building something for the off-road and backcountry adventures I had always dreamed of taking. The first-gen double cab Tacoma had been on my watch list for a while as it met a bunch of my needs; most importantly having four doors and room for the whole family, which was key as it’s my daily driver as well. I was lucky and found it only hours after it was posted on Craigslist just one street down from my house. I sent the seller a quick email and road my skateboard over to check it out the next day. It was the perfect find. A single-family had owned it from day one and handed over a stack of maintenance records along with all original paperwork, including the dealer’s window sticker. I paid $7,500 cash with 208k miles on the clock.

[ THE BUILD ] The truck stayed stock for all of about two hours as I drove straight away to pick up the rear bumper, which is installed on it now. I found this amazing rear bumper on Craigslist for just $350, and since the original one had some pretty bad rust, I was excited to make this first improvement. Funny thing is that I ended up buying a set of steel wheels on the truck from this same seller on Craigslist just a couple of months later. The rest of the changes followed quickly, too new headlights, grille and wrapping the faded window trim in fresh vinyl made a huge visual change and really refreshed the nearly 20-yearold truck. Selling some of the old parts helped pay for the new ones and after about two months the truck was nearly as you see it now. I’ve always loved adjusting or modifying whatever I had owned to better fit my personal taste or improve performance. I can remember my brothers and I blacking out the wheels of
MY FIRST STOP FOR SHOPPING FOR MODS IS WHATEVER MIGHT BE ALREADY LAYING AROUND IN THE GARAGE.”
There is just something classic and elegant about a truck built around these principles. We had some old off-road driving school VHS tapes that covered the basics of off-road driving skills and the info and images really stuck with us as kids. I think this combined with growing up in a very outdoorsy household and lifestyle, the truck feels like more of an extension of who I am rather than just a truck built for a single purpose. I built it to further expand my reach for all my outdoor hobbies as well as widen the scope of what’s possible on family road trips! Things like photography, archery, backcountry adventures, cross-country road trips, shooting, hiking, crossfit, athletic events, just plain old off-roading, as well as future backcountry adventures!
our gas-powered RC cars with a Sharpie, cutting holes in the airbox and trimming the tread of the tires to increase grip on the pavement at the local street race. The mods worked, but the trucks wheelied and flipped on the straightaways. Back then, it was a funny sight to see.
[ THE PURPOSE ]
Growing up, I can clearly remember building working motorized 4x4 LEGO creations from scratch and modelling them as closely as possible the classic Land Rover Discoveries and Defenders used in the old Camel trophy classic challenges. I’ve always been drawn to the function and utility over fashion approach to vehicles used in these challenges as well the ones used in the military or government work, so this was a strong inspiration for my truck.
The truck is also my daily driver, and I want it to function just as well on a trip to the mountains as it does on a trip to the grocery store. So I try and keep both of these things in mind when choosing upgrades.
There are so many reasons why I had always planned on owning an adventure rig like this!

[ THE MODS ] The truck’s set up right now is really pretty simple and meant to function as a daily driver and also be ready at any time to hit the trails or an extended road trip. The parts I’ve added have been a mix of great opportunities, like my neighbor getting rid of a roof rack the same week I got the truck, and the need for improvement in a certain area. All the mods are meant to be versatile. The simple LED strip lighting in the camper shell is perfect for loading and unloading groceries from the store. I added a 12V socket, as well as two USB outlets, on a breaker switch in the rear of the camper shell and this is great anytime we’re hanging out at the rear of the truck or to charge my phone with the car off. I love having the Rotopax on the roof, and have already had the chance to help out a stranded family by offering what I like to call some “roof gas.” I definitely wouldn’t consider myself a “fabricator.” But most of the pieces on the truck, I have modified or used existing parts and repurposed them for something else. A good example of this are the mounts for the rack on the camper shell. Don’t tell my wife, but I raided the kitchen and used our composite cutting board for the material of the mounts. The Baja-style lights on the roof of the truck are a combination of a used Yakima bar and Q towers and six Oedro 5,500-lumen lights ordered off Amazon for $25 each. The lights are mounted using parts that I found in my garage and a local hardware store. The rear storage drawer and the sleeping platform is just a homemade setup - nothing special - and I’m sure very similar to others. It’s inspired by images of similar bed boxes. The rear leaf pack is a combination of my old original leaf pack and used leaf pack from a 2001 Extended Cab I found for $40 on Craigslist. Typically I don’t start with a specific budget in mind. My first stop for shopping for mods is whatever might be already laying around in the garage! But really, it just depends on the mod I’m doing. There are a lot of small things that are actually cheaper and better quality than what I could build myself. For the bigger ticket items, most are just out of reach of my self-imposed budget, and I start designing and thinking about how I could make it myself or find it used on Craigslist. I’d say the most unique mods on the Tacoma are the homemade roof lights and leaf pack, plus the lift and tires. But that eBay snorkel is pretty cool, too. I’ve been blessed and the truck hasn’t been to a shop yet. I do try and tackle everything I can at home, and as my experience grows, the list of things I feel comfortable taking does, too. Having a dad that was swapping engines and repairing our family’s as well as friends’ cars doesn’t hurt either! Although I couldn’t join in because of
52
36° 50’ 36.24” N 118° 16’ 24.04” W work, I recently watched my dad and one of his friends do a complete frame swap on 2017 Jeep Wrangler in less than 24 hours! While it certainly helps to have grown up around cars, it’s not a requirement. I want to inspire others to tackle basic repairs and modifications and with tools like YouTube and online forums, combined with a healthy dose of “can-do” attitude, you can really save a ton of money. But better than saving money is the feeling of accomplishment you get from a successful fix or improvement! After driving more than 12,000 miles in the last eight months since I’ve owned the truck, there are three things that I think would increase my enjoyment and capability of the truck the most. First would be front and rear-facing cameras. The rear camera for safety with kids in the driveway, and the forward camera for better line selection and because lots of my trips are just my son and me. It’s often unsafe to leave the truck mid-drive and try to find a new line. Second would be proper skid plates and sliders which will help us push deeper and explore more. Third is a supercharger because I like hearing the whine of the blower; the daily enjoyment of that is well worth the cost to me. I’m hoping to either find a wrecked low-mileage Tacoma with a supercharger and maybe just do a full engine swap later on. Down the road I can see a front locker, front bumper and winch as well as onboard air.
[ THE ADVENTURES ] That happy camper you see in my photos is my adorable son Christian. He’s only 3.5 years old, but has joined me on the most difficult trails I’ve driven. It’s hard not to bring him along when he says things like, “I love it when you are with me, daddy,” and “Let’s go off-roading!”
This is a pretty easy trail and doable in a slightly lifted 4x4. However, it does offer plenty of optional routes that range from difficult to the insane. About 200 yards into the trail there is an option for either “more difficult” or “most difficult,” and I looked at my brother and said, “It’s more fun to fail, than to pass through easy.” We headed up a steep, dusty and super rocky climb. About 3/4 of the way up, I was surprised we hadn’t gotten stuck yet. Then we came to a section where it was almost impassable. With my brother acting as a spotter, and Christian safely out of the truck and away from a possible roll, we were able to reverse and make a couple more attempts. With a slightly better position, we picked a better line, cleared the sticking point and made it to the top without issue. It’s amazing how much further a good line will take you than a heavy foot and all the mods in the world.
Last month, the whole family drove about 2,200 miles round trip to Portland, Oregon, and back to California in the Tacoma. It was neat to get to make that memory in the truck. While I was there, I got the chance to hit a couple of trails on Larch Mountain in Washington, with my older brother as my co-pilot. He and I spent a lot of time on the mountain as kids, so it was really great to get to drive some of the trails together for the first time. I also just got back a couple of days ago from exploring some of the amazing trails on Bald Mountain near Shaver Lake, California. My son is my constant co-pilot on almost all of my trips and we were joined this time by my younger brother. We slept in the truck camper, summited Bald Mountain and did a “most difficult” trail section and saw four black bears!

[ INTERNET STAR IN THE MAKING ] Right now, I would like to add some longer format videos on my YouTube channel and walk through some of the home-brewed modifications on the truck to hopefully inspire or help others to do the same. I would also like to start documenting my trips with the family, especially with my son. It can be a lot of extra work to film a trip, but I know the reward of watching these later in life will be priceless. I think with a name like “Overland Underbudget,” people might get the idea that I’m always thinking of the cost and money in a negative way, or that I look down on those who do spend a lot on their rigs. But that is definitely not the case. I just want to inspire others to think outside the box. To be creative and not be afraid to use Craigslist or the cutting board from the kitchen as part of their dream build. Don’t fall into the trap of thinking one needs more mods than just a set of grippy tires and 4WD before they can get outside and have some incredible adventures.

T
he popularity of overlanding in the U.S. has been growing steadily over the past few years, with more vehicles being outfitted to enjoy both off-road and the camping lifestyle each day. Overland Expo has been the definitive event for enthusiasts looking to learn more about overlanding. What started as a small gathering of like-minded adventure travel enthusiasts 10 years ago has grown to become the centerpiece for the overlanding community, with more than 20,000 people attending this year’s Overland Expo West event that was held May 17th to 19th at Fort Tuthill County Park in Flagstaff, Arizona. To maximize attendance and allow for everyone to join in on the overlanding fun, the Expo is split into two regions - West and East, with two different shows. The event features various classes and seminars to learn more about vehicle recovery, longterm travel, first aid and more. The programs are created to inspire and educate the public on proper and safe ways to travel by vehicle. There are literally hundreds of session-hours of classes for all types of enthusiasts, with speakers and trainers from all across the world representing at the Expo. It’s a family affair and there is even a Kids Expedition Skills Area for kids 10 and older. Visitors can either stay

Much like other automotive trade shows and events, Overland Expo has more than 300 vendors from the automotive aftermarket industry to the outdoor travel gear niche. The highlight of the event are the wide-array of vehicles on display that range from vintage Land Rovers, EarthRoamers, military vehicles, 4Runners, Land Cruisers and adventure motorcycles to the all-new Jeep Gladiator and Rivian R1T. While Overland Expo West is usually in May, Overland Expo East was held in October, which was held at Infinity Downs Farm in Virginia from the 11th through the 13th. ADVENTURE UPFITTER: REBEL
OFF ROAD WORDS: BOND GILMER PHOTOS: ROMAN RACELA
[ THE JOURNEY BEGINS ]
[ THE REBEL IS UNLEASHED ]
My name is Bond Gilmer and I’m Irish, but I grew up in South Africa, where I raced Motocross and BMX. I grew up in a country far from most conveniences. And being Africa, everything breaks down. From cars to tractors to motorcycles and chainsaws; even the diesel generator that ran our house. So at an early age I learned to tinker and fix things. I moved to the United States at the age of 16, where my first vehicle was a Jeep CJ7 and so began my involvement with the Jeep brand.
When I lived in Australia, I worked for two different off-road companies that set up Toyotas, Nissans and Mitsubishi vehicles for overland travel. I also saw the need for Jeep accessories in Australia, so I started my own Jeep accessory company, Overland Equipment, and imported American-made Jeep accessories to Australia.
At the age of 20, I worked for a dealership selling Jeeps and Hummer H1s. When I was 22, I moved to Australia and this is when I really got into overlanding. I shipped my modified Jeep, a 1992 YJ to Australia. I converted it from left-hand drive to right-hand drive, got an engineer’s approval for the Jeep to be road-worthy and then headed out to do some serious overlanding. Keep in mind that Australia is roughly the size of the United States and only has 23 million people in the entire country (17 million when I lived there). So, in a country as vast as Australia, traveling from one area to another is an overlanding journey that requires a lot of preparation as there are only small towns scattered through the center of the country and no paved roads; there are only dirt roads and two tracks. Imagine traveling from Los Angeles to Chicago with no cities and no paved roads in between. I have done plenty of three-week (and up to sixweek) overlanding journeys, where I camped in a different location every evening as I crossed the Australian Outback. In an environment that is this harsh and unforgiving, there are many factors that you have to take into account for a successful trip. Setting up your rig correctly is paramount. What to pack for each trip, where each item is located in your rig, and how often you will need to get to those particular items all play into the success of your trip, and go a long way to keeping everyone in your rig happy and wanting to continue. Being able to set up and break camp in a timely and organized fashion and having the correct camping gear for your excursion all lend to having a great time. 60
I returned to the States and began Rebel Off Road in 2010 during the recession. There were many obstacles and many more growing pains. Being an unknown company, I had to rely on my expertise and knowledge to set Rebel Off Road apart from the other companies that were already in the industry. I did lots of events like Easter Jeep Safari in Moab and King of the Hammers (KOH) to Jamborees and began traveling across the country for these events, where I would let the quality of the workmanship and the components that I used for the builds speak for themselves.

OUR SUCCESS, FIRST AND FOREMOST, STEMS FROM OUR STAFF.” Our success, first and foremost, stems from our staff. Rebel Off Road is an enthusiasts’ company. Our sales staff is incredibly knowledgeable about components that we offer for sale. Our techs perform high-quality work as they are off-roaders themselves. They know the importance of doing a great job and having the components that they installed work in unison with each other to ensure that the customer has a successful off-road excursion. We also work closely with the top brand manufacturers and make recommendations to each customer on what will work best for their particular application and vehicle use. While Rebel Off Road is known for its long travel suspension and coilover kits, there are a whole host of new products that are already developed and others still coming. From our XPLOR Bed Rack Systems for the overlander in all of us to our Halo roof racks and bumpers, expect many new products to follow.
For Rebel Off Road, the biggest growth will come from the overland category as this is really where the whole family can get into the outdoors and outdoor travel. Having a rig that is capable of letting the entire family experience this great country’s backroads and trails and lets them explore with the confidence and ease is what will drive the company’s direction.
passage of trails, making them impassable even during the summer months. Then there is terrain that’s in between, and it’s all waiting to be explored. Having a rig that is set up correctly with the right gear is not only the key to whether you and the family will have fun in the outdoors with your vehicle, but also the safety and security of the entire family.
[ OVERLANDING AND BEYOND ]
The off-road scene here in the USA is growing in all categories. Desert racing is growing, especially with the TV coverage now available. On the east coast, the Rock Bouncers are hitting it hard and continue to entertain. Rock crawling and rock racing is growing. Just look at KOH and all the Ultra 4 racing which are great examples of this. People in general are enjoying the outdoors with their vehicles more than ever, and the capabilities of these vehicles has never been higher in great part because of the aftermarket parts and accessories that are available. This is USA car culture. We love to customize our vehicles and all of these categories will continue to grow.
While overlanding in the USA is not the same as in, let’s say Australia, where the distances one must travel while being totally self-reliant are so very great, America has vast open areas that we have public access to explore. And while you don’t have to carry enough fuel for a week’s worth of driving to cross the vast expanse of desert, the landscape offers its own unique challenges. America is a rugged country full of open areas like deserts, where temperatures soar into the triple digits to the high forests of the Rockies, where snowfall can impede the

[ ADVENTURE ADVICE ] What you pack is important and so is how you go about packing the items you have chosen to take. You rig is the place to start. Set it up so that you can have easy access to the item you will use frequently or may need in an emergency. A well put together first aid kit is not only a must, but also needs to be very easily accessible, not buried somewhere in the back of your vehicle. Moreover, items that you will

most likely not use, but are needed when the circumstance dictates such as a Hi Lift Jack or a chainsaw could be mounted to a bed rack or roof rack so that they are out of the way. And since this is overland travel, all larger items need to be secured so as not to come loose and fall off or damage your vehicle (such as bicycles, kayaks, paddleboards, etc.) as well as gas bottles for your stoves. Make sure, and check twice, that these items are secure
on or in the vehicle. Remember to check all straps periodically as the tie downs will come loose with off-road travel. I like to check them numerous times a day during fuel stops and bathroom breaks which are a great time to inspect that these items are secure. I also recommend soft cases or duffle bags for clothes as they conform to the limited bed or interior spaces much better than a suitcase. And remember that if you have a wrinkle on your shirt, no one cares!
I have two Jeep Gladiators. Both are set up for overlanding and they each have our XPLOR Bed Rack System. One has our full rack and the other our half height rack. All of the accessories such as Hi Lift Jacks, gas cooking bottles, ax and shovel holder, camping tables and fuel holders are secured to our modular rack system to keep them secure and out of the way of the bed allowing full bed access. Roof top tents are also mounted to the XPLOR bed rack systems. They both have fridge systems on removable mounts for when we are not exploring the outdoors. Both are set up with our Halo Roof Rack and light bars, etc., and they have long distance radios for extended range communications.

The Gladiator is a great platform to start with, and we have solid axles both front and rear with front and rear lockers, and long travel suspension. One is on 40 tires and the other is on 37 tires. Rebel Off Road will be doing overland trips with these vehicles and as you should all know, traveling is always safer with two or more rigs. t the intersection of the I-5 and the Tacoma Dome (in Washington), you’ll find the LeMay, “America’s Car Museum,” a 165,000-squarefoot facility dedicated to the love of automobiles, and one of the finest automotive museums in the country. So, it was altogether fitting that Nitto Tire chose the LeMay as the site for its first-ever RigFest, a gathering of overland vehicles in a grassy setting more often populated by vintage automobiles, antique racers and wine tasting. Held on June 29th, the museum may not have been the ideal place to camp, but its proximity to Seattle and access to the freeway made for easy ingress and egress for vendors and participants. On this day, the weather was also cooperative, and the event took place without incident. Organized by Cie Digital Labs, Nitto’s advertising agency ( the same organizer behind Nitto’s Auto Enthusiast Day, an event that in its seventh year has grown to over 26,000 attendees), they came prepared to put on a first-class affair, and thanks to all the participants that gathered, the event was a success.

HARD SHELL TACO 2017 TOYOTA TACOMA
WORDS: ROB DAMAN // PHOTOS: BRIAN MCGEE & ROB DAMAN
[ I LOVE THE ’80S ] I’ve been a car enthusiast since the ’80s. Ever since I’ve been driving, I’ve been moddin’ and making mistakes here and there. But, I finally got better with things, learned from mistakes and then started to do more DIYs. My first off-road truck was a 1999 Ford F-150 flareside that was stock. I never took it offroad, but it was an off-road vehicle since it was a 4x4. My first actual first build was a 2004 Nissan Titan that was 2WD. I had these cool AMP steps that would drop down when you opened the door and retracted when you closed it. I made it into a lifted prerunner, with a 6” lift. It was really popular on the Titan forums because I was the first one doing big mods like a moonroof that covered the whole roof. And back then, 22s were huge, which I had, and I was one of the first to rock them with 35s! I’ve owned many vehicles over the years and many were Japanese models. I did have two BMWs (E90 and E30) prior to the Tacoma and both of them were having major issues. I needed something I could drive daily and reliably and the only “real” truck in my opinion that’s an import is the Tacoma. Luckily, I was able to reserve the only 6-speed manual in SoCal at the time. I actually talked about it in my YouTube video and went over the three things I love about my Toyota Tacoma which were its reliability, resale value and safety. I’ve always been a fan of Toyotas. Back in the day, the car to have was the MK3 Supra Turbo. This was way before the Fast and the Furious movies made it popular with the MK4 Supra
70
Turbo. Toyota Corollas were a big thing in the ’80s, and I dug them too. I actually liked the mini truck scene and seeing the slammed Yotas back then. Of course, Marty McFly’s Back to the Future truck was cool, too. My mom actually had a Toyota van and a Tercel. I ended up with a Honda, but I knew that Japanese vehicles were the way to go back then as far as reliability.
[ SENSIBLE THINGS ] Since I had a lot of cars that I’ve modded and spent a lot of money on, I told myself I wouldn’t do any major mods and I preached that on YouTube for a good year. I started off with sensible things, such as ceramic tint to cool things down in the inside, Clazzio leather seat covers because I knew cloth seats weren’t very protective especially since I had kids, and just smaller low-cost mods. But then I had an opportunity to purchase a TRD Pro Bilstein suspension, which I installed myself. I did a video, of course, and that actually helped grow my channel even more, surprisingly. And now here I am. I do 99% of the installs with the help of my oldest son, Jesse. I’ve taught him how to use tools, and now he’s handling a lot of things. You can see how much he’s grown and learned on my YouTube channel. He’s now 12 and taller than his mom. All the work is done in the driveway, literally rain or shine and even sometimes at night. The 1% of the time, my friend Nathan, aka “@Botchuschopshop” on Instagram, helped me with the heavy leaf packs. I’m getting too old to lift something like that. I also had a few friends muscle the Relentless Fab steel bumper and winch when I got one. The struggle is real.

The purpose of my Tacoma, which I have called Hard Shell Taco, was to travel to any destination with my family safely. It hasn’t failed me yet and it’s reaching 40,000 miles. The first main mod and the biggest are my lights from Baja Designs. I was looking for reliability and quality with this build, so I decided to go with Baja Designs and I’m very happy with the product. Off-roading at night is challenging and there are places where there are no street lamps, so having an array of bright LED lights is important. My Decked bed storage is another highlight because when you’re traveling, you need to have some security. Unfortunately, because some people are opportunists, you want to make sure your stuff is safe. I had a thief take some ammo cans of recovery equipment, so I now know better and have started locking valuables whenever possible. Wheels and tires are the biggest form and function upgrade I’ve done. Visually it just makes your truck stand out and having taller tires with an aggressive tread pattern gives you that extra clearance and traction when off pavement. I’ve had a few different setups, but currently I have Volk TE37Xs which are probably the lightest and strongest wheels out there that I’ve paired with General Grabber ATs. I’m an ’80s kid so the retro stripes was a must for me. I love the look and I did a video about it and how I was inspired by the ’80s pickup trucks. I wanted my modern version of it and I’ve seen people actually mimic the style and you know what they say - imitation is the best form of flattery.

[ ONE-DAY EXCURSIONS ] Most of my trips out are day trips because it’s hard for me to be out there camping with everyone with work and other obligations. But my most memorable trip was earlier this year when I went to Big Bear with my entire family. My plan was to go with my friends, but when I mentioned it to my wife, she decided she wanted to go. This was actually the first time that she and my daughter went with us to go off-roading. It was pretty cold and there was some light dusting of snow while we were up there. It ended up dumping snow by the time we left and it was heartwarming to see my family enjoy it all.

My favorite local trail used to be Holy Jim here in Southern California because it was a place where you can go to drive leisurely on dirt roads and just relax and get your quick off-road fix. Or you could try to go to some spots and flex your driving skills over some rocks. It’s unfortunate that some crazed lunatic that lived there decided to set someone’s house on fire, which caused that huge Holy Jim Fire in the Inland Empire last year. It’s been closed for some time now, but hopefully it’ll be open soon. There were a couple of local Toyota meets there, so I’m hoping that we can do it again once it opens back up. The most technical trail I’ve done was on a trip that my friends and I did to Berdoo Canyon in Joshua Tree. I have a video up on my YouTube channel that shows us going up and down the mountain on some really rough terrain. We had to be really careful up there because it’s ADVENTURERIG SM AG .COM
73
@ ADVENTURERIGSM AG pretty easy to break parts and equipment in that type of terrain. It’s already difficult enough maneuvering on the trails during the day, but trying to do it at night complicates things even more. Having bright LEDs to light up the trail and friends to serve as spotters on dicey sections of Berdoo Canyon tempered my whiteknuckle experience and gave me the confidence that I’d make it home without unforeseen issues. The original plan was a turnaround day trip to Joshua Tree, but it ended up being an all day and night adventure that started at 6 A.M. and ended on the following day at 1 A.M.
[ SOUND ADVICE ] I don’t go on off-roading trips alone. I’ll also go online and E-scout to see all the possible routes and what people are saying about it. YouTube is a great resource to get an idea of what the trails look like so I can replicate it if possible. As far as preparation for day trips, I like to make sure I have enough water and snacks. I also have SPF handy or some type of hat to keep the UV exposure to a minimum.
I decided to create a YouTube channel a few years ago, and it was about the mods I’ve done. There are a few videos of my kids but basically I just give people information about my Tacoma and the trips I’ve taken. These videos help inform others of what to do or what not to do because I definitely made mistakes. It’s amazing to see the kind of feedback you get and to me it’s mind boggling to see how many views some of my videos get. I’ve met a lot of people through there and a lot of Tacoma owners are moms and dads, so it’s great to be part of that. I say this a lot and it sounds cliche at times, but I truly believe the off-road community is one of the friendliest and most helpful around. We all of course take pride in the makes and models we own but when someone needs help, people are there. There’s a lot of people who gather to help with recovery when a rig has an unfortunate mishap, gather for trail clean-ups and just go on trails ensuring others get home safe. I just had my Rigs n Kids meet in South Orange County and the attendance was amazing! There were rigs that traveled well over 100 miles to attend this event and I am appreciative and humbled that these folks came down and brought their families to meet me and share their passion for their vehicles and the offroading lifestyle.

Also, rig prep can’t be overemphasized enough, especially if you’re going on a long trip. Grab a torque wrench and start finding every nut and bolt to make sure they’re tight. I double check all fluids for leaks and I bring some extra tools just in case. I also take with me a weBoost, which helps improve my cell phone signal. It’s great to have in remote areas so you can almost always have a signal and be able to communicate with someone. I have power banks charged for all my devices, so I can keep things going and get a signal if anything happens.

TOYO TIRES TRAILPASS WORDS: STAFF // PHOTOS: TOYO TIRES
T
oyo Tires held its inaugural Toyo Tires Trailpass event at picturesque Hood River, Oregon. The event had hundreds of enthusiasts congregate to celebrate their shared passion for the outdoors. Overland vehicle owners had the chance to check out each other’s rigs and meet other owners, some of which traveled in as far as Southern California. Many took part in the free workshops and presentations to learn more about vehicle gear, proper set-up, and even outdoor photography. More than 25 vendors were on display, many of which were local to Oregon. Attendees each had a chance to win in the huge raffle that showcased more than $15,000 in prizes. Additionally, more than 850 pounds of canned food was collected for the local food bank. Overall, the event proved to be successful in bringing the overlanding and outdoor community together.
