W
idebody styling is everywhere these days, from front-wheel-drive imports to full-size trucks. But there was a time a few years ago when they were rare, with only a handful of skilled fabricators testing out their craftsmanship on willing participants. One of the main forerunners of this movement, Octavio “Topo” Villafana, was the first to take this to the extreme with the Chrysler LX platform on their Challenger and Charger.
Then in 2009, Topo took the newly released fifth-generation Camaro and accentuated its already low slung and aggressive body lines into a muscular wideboy beast, a first of its kind that was featured in Issue 63 of DUB. AUDI LAUNCHES INTEGRATED TOLL MODULE Audi has launched the first vehicleintegrated toll technology for the U.S. on select models. The Integrated Toll Module, or ITM, is is a toll transponder built into the vehicle’s rear view mirror, allowing drivers to access toll roads in the U.S. and in parts of Canada and Mexico. This means no more worrying about having to pay tolls online or any unpaid toll fees for those that have to use them. ITM is yet another Audi first in vehicleto-infrastructure (V2I) technology, allowing the car to communicate and interact with its environment.
NISSAN DROPPING ELECTRIC CROSSOVER BASED ON IMX KURO CONCEPT When Nissan dropped the IMx Kuro concept at this year’s Geneva Motor Show, many wrote it off as just another concept that was meant to give us a glimpse into Nissan’s design and style future. But, it seems that the concept will make its way to the production lines. According to Nissan’s head of Design in Europe Mamoru Aoki, the concept crossover will make it to production sooner than expected! Nissan has boasted a new crossover vehicle based on the same architecture as their LEAF, but not much else has been mentioned.
RACING DRIVERS SURF ON BOARDS CREATED FROM JAGUAR PARTS Panasonic Jaguar Formula E Racing drivers Nelson Piquet and Mitch Evans went surfing in Uruguay using surfboards made from recycled Jaguar parts as part of a stunt to get a FanBoost (a 5-second increase in power during the second half of the race) at their next Formula E race. According to Jaguar, the surfboards were made using polyurethane, which is a material that’s used to create the skeleton of life-sized clay models. They usually get sent to the landfill after use, but this time they were turned into custom surfboards by SkunkWorks Surf Co. in Northern Ireland. 22

any of you reading this have gone to great lengths to fully customize your vehicle. From custom wheels with just the right tires, a flashy paint job wrap and in-car electronics that allow the whole neighborhood to know your favorite song. Often, in addition to your audio equipment, you may also have invested in things like a state-of-the-art infotainment, navigation system, remote start or radar/laser detector. You also are likely carrying a pretty sophisticated computer/communication device right in your pocket. With all that money invested in mobile electronics, have you ever considered that your window tint might be degrading the performance of these systems?

To explain how, we first need to explain various common window tint film constructions. To simplify what can be a complicated topic, there are three primary ways that a window tint is constructed to give it the look and performance characteristics you see and feel on the glass. They are as follows:
1. DYED WINDOW TINT - Essentially, this is a base layer of polyester film that is dyed to the color and darkness desired. Then, a scratch-resistant coating is applied to the exterior surface and and adhesive layer is applied to the interior side that will attach to the glass. There are various ways that a polyester film can be dyed, but for this article those differences are irrelevant. These films typically give a consumer the look they desire, but do not have a great deal of performance when it comes to heat rejecting properties. 2. METAL-HYBRID WINDOW TINT - This film is typically constructed when a layer of polyester film has a layer of metal particles attached to it. There are two primary ways to apply this metal layer, but for this article, it is enough to understand that the polyester layer and metal layer are bonded together. This film can also have the polyester layer dyed as above to achieve the desired look of the final product. Like the dyed window tint above, this combination then has a scratchresistant coating to the exterior surface and and adhesive layer applied to the interior side that will attach to the glass.
3. CERAMIC OR IR-REJECTING WINDOW TINT - This last type of film utilizes the same base polyester as the two above, but then implements non-metal, IR-rejecting technology to improve the heat rejecting performance characteristics of this polyester layer. This is an oversimplified description, but it will suffice for the objective of this article. As above, this enhanced polyester film then has a scratch-resistant coating to the exterior surface and and adhesive layer applied to the interior side that will attach to the glass. So, how does all of this relate to your mobile electronics? Most window tint shops offer a good and better option for the films they install. Typically, if a customer is only concerned with price and just wants
a car to look “tinted,” they will offer the least expensive option of the three choices above, which is the dyed window tint. However, if the customer wants the desired look combined with some heat-rejecting performance, they are often directed to the next price point up, which in many cases is the metal-hybrid window tint. Here is where the problem arises. While the metal-hybrid film will give good heat rejection, the metal layer can significantly reduce an electronic signal’s ability to go through the glass. This can interfere with electronic signals that connect you to the Internet and GPS, reducing the effectiveness of your radar/laser detecting device and even cut the signal strength of your phone. So, by choosing the metal-hybrid window tint option,
you may have actually degraded all the other mobile electronics systems in your vehicle. So, what is the answer? If you want a great tinted appearance combined with solid heatrejecting properties, all while maintaining your mobile electronics peak performance, you must choose a ceramic or IR-rejecting window tint. hen you think of pro-touring cars, images of masterfully modded Camaros and Mustangs come to mind. The classic beauty of these timeless automobiles combined with modern necessities and enhanced performance parts can bring any grown man to his knees. But the last vehicle you’d ever picture after hearing the word “pro-touring” is an AMC Javelin. The American frontengine, rear-wheel-drive, two-door hardtop wasn’t always easy on the eyes in its heyday, and wouldn’t be categorized as a worthy protouring model until the legendary Ringbrothers got their hands on one!
When Prestone approached the Wisconsinbased car builders about doing a build for them, models like Chargers and Mustangs were tossed around until the Ringbrothers suggested the possibility of something totally different than the norm – a 1972 Javelin from their childhood. “I used to wash cars and do oil changes as a kid and this was one of the vehicles I worked on,” Mike Ring admits. “It was brand new and fresh and I fell in love. It has literally sat in this guy’s garage since the last time I changed the oil in 1977 and it was still in great condition. We were seriously hoping someone would let us build it because we knew it had huge potential.”

It took a while for Prestone to finally see Mike and Jim Ring’s vision, but once they did, the brothers had to compress their restomod process into just 12 months (condensed from the usual 24 months). “We thought [the Javelin] aligned with Prestone’s brand well,” mentions Randy Fisher, Prestone’s VP of Marketing. “There were only 3,200 ever produced and the car embodies American muscle car history and automotive innovation.” With a small list of a few mods Prestone knew they wanted to include in a show car, the Ringbrothers pretty much had free reign when it came to the design process and build of the Javelin, which was one of the most intensive they’ve ever had. Unlike other builds, the Ringbrothers were able to utilize 3D scanning and 3D printing for the first time, employing the latest technology to make plugs and molds to make the entire process seamless and faster. “We came to the Ringbrothers with the idea that we wanted a high-stakes project, with a quick turnaround that would be an integral part of Prestone’s 90th Anniversary. Once they proposed the idea of the Javelin, we really let them run with it,” Fisher says. MAGAZINE 2018

First, the Ringbrothers decided to extend the Javelin’s wheelbase by moving the wheels forward 6.5” and to pair with a new hood, front fenders, grille and front valance. “The front overhang stuck out super far and was high up, and we knew that was the major ugly factor of the car and really attacked it,” Mike admits. “Bringing the wheels forward totally changed the whole look of it all!” Other custom details added include taillights, bumpers, trim and engine bay accessories - all machined out of blocks of aluminum at the Ringbrother’s facility.

The reworked classic needed to perform to modern standards, actually beyond modern standards, which is why a Wegner Motorsports 6.2-liter Hemi Mopar Hellcat engine fitted with a Whipple 4.5-liter Supercharger was added, producing an insane 1,036 horsepower. The perfect stance is produced with a Detroit Speed Hydroformed front subframe that was originally for a Camaro, Detroit Speed rack and pinion steering, front sway bars and RideTech shocks for a smooth ride. To complement the front suspension, the Ringbrothers fabricated a Chevy 12-bolt rear end fitted with a custom fourlink suspension and topped it off with a set of 20x11 front and 20x13 rear HRE wheels and a pairing of 285/30R20 front and 335/30R20 rear Michelin tires. Inside, the Ringbrothers wanted to retain the original look with a modern twist, redoing most of the interior. They dressed it with Classic Instruments gauges, a Vintage Air Gen IV Magnum Evap kit and custom seats by Upholstery Unlimited, in addition to a Kicker sound system.

“The Javelin build turned out even better than we could have hoped,” Fisher admits. “Just look at it! If you were to see that car driving down the street, there’s no way it wouldn’t catch your eye. It perfectly embodies the spirit of the Prestone brand.” The Javelin impressed all at the 2018 SEMA Show inside Prestone’s booth before leading the company’s 90th anniversary Rally in L.A., with an appearance at the L.A. Auto Show right after. For the Ringbrothers, the Javelin is one of their best builds to date and they’ve done a lot over their tenure! “I haven’t seen one done to nearly this level, that I’m aware of,” Mike confesses. “It couldn’t get more special than this. I worked on that car when I was 12 and as a young kid you dream about driving it. nyone who was a fan of the import scene in the early 1990s and 2000s might recall the Black Widow series of body kits by Ground Designs 2000, owned by Ivan Tampi, which adorned many Honda and Toyota sport compacts of the period. Then there was the Black Widow Ford Mustang body kit that led to a collaboration with Ford, as Tampi was given the chance to transform a few of their vehicles for promotional purposes. Created by Tampi in an age where imports reigned supreme, his success turned out to be his downfall, as everyone started to copy his kits, forcing Ivan to take a sabbatical from the industry he loved so much to re-evaluate his goals.

But after seven years away, it was time for Tampi to make his comeback, choosing the 2014 SEMA Show to debut his new widebody kit for the BMW Z4. At the show, he noticed the allure of the, then, freshly redesigned 2014 Corvette and was inspired to create a new kit that would accentuate the body lines while providing an eye-catching mod. “I have a background in Mustangs and created a rendering that blended features of both for the current model Corvette, placed it on social media and had an amazing response,” he details. With so much interest in his render, Tampi spent the following year hard at work to finish three examples of his XIK Wide Body kit before the next SEMA show.

“I try to make it more like a supercar than a sports car,” he notes about his design process. With only 100 kits available to create a sense of exclusivity, Tampi is currently on No. 13. “I’ve built Corvettes for all sorts of owners from different states and I do each one individually by hand from carbon fiber replacement parts that I fabricate myself. Nothing compares to my craftsmanship and I do the entire installation on my own. I’m a one-man-shop building kits ranging from $30k up to $100k.”
His XIK kit is a hand-laid carbon fiber package that is a direct bolt-on to the factory mounts, consisting of 15 pieces that he molds entirely on his own. It plays off of the already prominent body lines the C7 features, drastically widening its lines for a sleeker, yet more aggressive, look. “My kit is 8” wider in the rear than a stock Stingray and 4” wider in the front, providing an imposing stance for the Corvette,” he explains. The entire kit includes a new front bumper, front bumper bottom spoiler, front fenders, side skirts, rear quarter panels, rear spoiler wing, rear bumper and rear bottom splitter. 60

As the demand for his body kits have grown, Tampi is looking to expand into a larger facility and pass down his knowledge to a few chosen participants. The XIK kit for the Corvette is just the first step in his journey towards more exotic aspirations, as he looks forward to restyling some of today’s more popular rides. D E T R O IMP 1968 DODGE CHARGER RT/R
T
he appeal of American muscle cars transcends American borders, intriguing an international audience that appreciates the rich history, big horsepower and exceedingly good looks of these timeless rides. One such admirer is Johan Eriksson, more popularly known as “Volvo Johan,” “Viper Johan” or “Charger Johan,” who hails from Sweden. Ever since he could remember, he’s been fascinated by everything with an engine and began his customizing career at an early age. Growing up in the country in Värmland, Sweden, Johan took an interest in American muscle car culture, primarily Mopar with their big engines and heavy attribute compressors and headers and knew his real work was building his own version of these muscle cars that fueled his passion for the automotive world.

Over the years, he’s worked on numerous builds (including a black 1968 Charger R/T and 1996 Dodge Viper GTS), but it’s his most recent 1968 Dodge Charger RT/R restomod that he’s most proud of. “The car was first built and was then re-built first in my mind for more than 10 years before any real modification were done to the Charger,” he details. The mission of his classic RT/R was to mix the original Mopar spirit with a bit of a “Hot Wheels” appearance, while keeping the soul of what the “American muscle icon 1968 Dodge Charger” stands for. All the while transforming it to become a modern sports car with extreme performance, stance and styling. So, although at first glance it looks like a standard 1968 Charger, it’s bigger and bolder in every possible way!
In 2007, Johan bought the Charger from a friend that specialized in selling American classics, knowing that it would one day transform into his dream RT/R build. “It was more of a rolling chassis and body than anything since both the engine and transmission were missing and the body had bits of rust. But there were grand changes in the horizon for it!” he exclaims. Together with his friends Jörgen and Otto (which make up the fellowship Powered By Johan) and collaboration with Turtle Wax Sweden, the team was assembled and the project was underway.

But all great things aren’t done overnight, with the build taking almost five years and 15,000 hours to complete. Johan was the mastermind behind the overall design and construction of the build, but his friends and team donated countless time and effort to bring his vision to life. “For a build like the RT/R to happen it involves so much people to make it a reality. From sponsors, subcontractors of parts not possible to solve in-house, to friends who dealt with anything from transporting a piece from A to B in the middle of the night in order to get the car ready.” Unlike in the States where you may have one shop do it all, there was no one professional shop involved in this build except for the when the interior stitching, custom wheels and some engine tuning they needed help with. “Instead, we trailered the car back and forth and transported different parts between us depending on what stage in the process the project was at the time,” he explains. “To give you an idea of the transport time we have spent on this, the fellowship members all live about 93 miles between each other surrounded with deep forests. The project would have not been possible had it not been for the group of friends working on their spare time.” With an intricate list of modifications for the pro-tourer, Johan finds it hard to chose his favorites, explaining how such a task would 72

be impossible. For him and his fellowship, it was never about taking any customization shortcuts. “For us, it’s just the mix of the big things like the bodywork, engine, milling details and the like to even the smallest, almost invisible changes and details, that all factor in together to create what we set out to achieve.” After winning Sweden’s best custom car with their black 1968 Charger, they were invited to present their build at the SEMA Show that year and able to experience the SEMA excitement, which he felt again when the Charger was shown at the 2017 SEMA Show thanks to the help of CTEK Battery Chargers. From there, it’s been a whirlwind of a ride, touring across America to show off his creation. And the buzz was so big that it caught the attention of avid car enthusiast Jay Leno, who featured Johan on his YouTube channel “Jay Leno’s Garage.”

“The Jay Leno experience was mind blowing and almost a surreal adventure for all of us in the fellowship,” he details. “To sit in the passenger seat of our RT/R that really hadn’t been test driven yet while Jay Leno gives throttle and smiles on L.A. streets was nothing less than mind blowing. It didn’t get less overwhelming that suddenly a chain of black cars stopped at the filming site and former U.S. Vice President Joe Biden stepped out to check out the RT/R! That episode is one of the most clicked YouTube videos of 2017!” As they currently tour the states, Johan’s fellowship is basking in all the excitement the Charger is generating before they go back home and come up with their next huge build. And even though they’ve got plenty of offers from potential buys, he’s not sure if it’ll ever be sold. “We’ve put too much work into the Charger to let it go...but the future will tell, I guess.”

hen a regular off-road custom just won’t do, those with a flexible bank account can drop $178K on the Rezvani TANK, the company’s “Xtreme Utility Vehicle” that’s cut from the same cloth as other military-grade vehicles. Known for their carbon fiber-trimmed supercars, Rezvani decided to change things up to offer their most extreme street-legal model to date. “With the disappearance of the Hummer, we felt no one was making the masculine, military-style SUV, so we set out to make that,” describes Ferris Rezvani, founder of Rezvani Motors. “The idea came from the brutal military trucks, but from the future. It had to look muscular, yet elegant.” At first glance, you’ll notice how menacing this behemoth is and then realize that it looks very familiar and that’s because it’s built on the Jeep Wrangler JK chassis. “Unlike most other SUVs, the Jeep Wrangler still has a body-on frame design, which allowed us freedom of design by removing the top structure, while not affecting the structural rigidity. It was also reasonably priced as a base and had extreme off-road capabilities and a huge aftermarket industry, including options for larger engines,” Ferris explains.

But Rezvani made sure to include styling elements from some of the world’s most recognizable military vehicles, sprinkling in some futuristic elements for a unique look. It’s aggressive and rugged exterior features a chiseled fascia, defined profile and similarities it shares with the rest of the Rezvani range like the prominent grille and sleek, defined headlights.

THIS DUB SHOW STOP was also a tribute to Mr. Ramos, the father of John Ramos, DUB’s Event Director, who passed away earlier this year. Mr. Ramos was a regular at our shows and for this event his presence was greatly missed! He was a founding member of Groupe Car Club, which he would always represent at all the shows. His fellow members commemorated him with a special mourning band across their Groupe Car Club plaques.

RED DEAD REDEMPTION 2 As the prequel to the 2010 title Red Dead Redemption, it follows the story of outlaw Arthur Morgan, a member of the Dutch van der Linde Gang. The game’s vast and atmospheric world will also provide the foundation for a new online multiplayer experience.

STATE OF DECAY 2 If you’re a “Walking Dead” fan, then you already know that creating bonds between survivors is key to surviving a zombie apocalypse and that’s exactly what you need to do in State of Decay 2. You have to build a customizable encampment and then scavenge for supplies on foot on in a vehicle, killing zombies along the way.
