e don’t know about you, but we literally love this time of year! It’s the only time of the year where three of the most popular sports overlap. It’s the beginning of football, the preseason of basketball and the end of baseball - so it’s basically a sport lover’s perfect time of year. Because we love football so much, we like to incorporate a few NFL players and their dope rides! For this Issue, we have Chicago Bears defensive tackle John Jenkins and his 1995 R33 Nissan Skyline and Jeep Rubicon. We’ve also got the scoop on Chris Johnson’s sleek and sexy Ferrari 488 Italia and luxe Aston Martin DB11. Then there’s Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Chris Conley and his Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport dressed up to look like an extra in the movie TRON. We also met up with Jimmy Tonoyan of R1 Motorsport, which has quickly become a heavy-hitter in the L.A. customization game!

When you’re on a mission to create the wildest ’55 Ford F-100, you do everything to make it happen! Such was the case for Chris Beatty, who created a “coyote” truck that would make Wile E. Coyote jealous. Dana Balthasar dreamed one of his builds would make it into a magazine since he was a teengager. Now that’s happened with is eye-catching color-changing Lexus RC F! Finally, we’re featuring rapper Young Dolph’s camo collection of enviable rides and talked about his music ambitions and more. Also check out our On Location recaps of Wrapscon, Nitto’s Auto Enthusiast Day and DUB Show Tour stops! Enjoy 107!

HOFELE JEEP

ULTIMATE AUTO’S EXOTIC ITALIANS I’ve been following Ultimate Auto on IG for a minute now and love everything they do! Their Lambo and Ferrari in last issue really blew me away. I’m also diggin’ the Jeeps the shop pushes out and sells on IG. My dream ride is definitely something from them! Pedro C. Via email

I’m more into the functional Jeeps that you would take out and wheel instead of mall crawlers, but that HOFELE Jeep from last Issue isn’t that bad! I wouldn’t mind hittin’ the streets in that thing and maybe do some light wheelin’ in it. I really like the back with its wide body rear arches that give the Jeep a distinct look.

We’ve always loved Ultimate Auto’s work, which is why we knew it was time to check in with the shop to feature their lastest creations! Everything Joe and the crew do is quality and amazing, and we follow them on IG, too!

COUNTS KUSTOMS COUPE DE VILLE

Derick A. Via email The HOFELE Jeep is truly a bespoke off-road ride that was made for city driving! Not all Jeeps have to hit the trails and HOFELE made sure to create something that would complement an urban lifestyle. But if you did want to check out some trails, the HOFELE Jeep would certainly handle its own.

LUCKY FOX

I haven’t missed an episode of History Channel’s “Counting Cars” yet! I love seeing all the different builds they do and how they turn out. Ryan Evans is actually one of my favorite guys on the crew and his Coupe de Ville is a serious work of art! The paint, interior, it being slammed and the system he put in makes it a classic ride I’d want to floss on the streets! Katie B. Via email It’s crazy to read about these guys doing big things and making millions off of something so easy as selling on Amazon! Tanner Fox is one lucky dude, that’s for sure. I checked out a few of his YouTube videos and he makes it sound super easy to do. All I need now is some capitol to make my millions online just like him so I can get my custom dream ride in your mag!

20

It’s no secret that Evans is indeed a talented artist when it comes to paintwork, so it only makes sense that his own custom would be a work of art! But he made sure the rest of it looked just as amazing, which resulted in a Caddy worthy of our pages!

James Joseph D. Via email

FREE

Yup, some guys have all the luck! But Tanner Fox also made sure to work hard to get to where he is now and is nice enough to want to teach others how to do it, too. We’re sure if you follow his plan, you’ll be able to do the same! And definitely let us know when you accomplish your goal!

AUTONEWSWIRE AUTOMOTIVE NEWS

A DRIVEABLE LEGO BUGATTI CHIRON There are some crazy and talented LEGO builders out there. These people can build replicas of practically anything using millions of LEGO pieces to create their masterpieces. LEGO Technic has taken their building skills to new heights with their 1:1 copy of the Bugatti Chiron, built entirely from LEGO Technic elements. But that’s not all since the car is actually driveable and is powered by the same Power Functions motor technology they use in their standard models. The model was built at the LEGO facility in Kladno in the Czech Republic, where large-scale models are an everyday feat. Designers here specialize in complex models for LEGO stores and LEGOLAND parks across the globe. To test drive the LEGO model, former Le Mans winner and Bugatti’s official test driver Andy Wallace took it out for a spin on the Ehra Lessien test track outside Wolfsburg, Germany. More than 1,000,000 LEGO Technic elements were used, no glue was used and the engine was created using LEGO Power Function motors, gear wheels, cross axles and more. It took 113,438 man hours to create this exceptional LEGO replica!

ROLLS-ROYCE CULLINAN Rolls-Royce will be dropping their new Cullinan model in early 2019, which is the manufacturer’s first foray into the ultra-luxury SUV segment. Although it’s not the first super-luxurious automaker to add an SUV to their lineup, Rolls-Royce wants to make theirs the best one. Nicknamed the “RollsRoyce truck,” the Cullinan will be the most expensive and luxurious off-road capable vehicle ever built. The new model will set owners back at least $400,000 and that’s just entry level models with higher trims costing more. The Cullinan is built on what RollsRoyce calls their “Architecture of Luxury,” which is a flexible, aluminum intensive space frame architecture that first showed on the Phantom VIII last year. Under the hood is a 6.75-liter twin-turbo V12 and it’ll be the first 4WD in the company’s history. 24

t seems the The Fast and the Furious trilogy has inspired many! Football player Keith McGill joins John Jenkins (page 58) in his fascination with the highly popular franchise and admits they helped inspired him to build his Nissan GT-R. The Oakland Raiders’ cornerback prefers the import scene, opting for high performance tuner vehicles. Having grown up in Southern California during the Fast and Furious days, McGill took a liking to the performance-centered automotive niche at a young age and has grown his passion for it over the years. His GT-R that was featured in Issue 100 sports an Aimgain GT Widebody Kit, which is anything but ordinary. The kit, which comprises of a front bumper, front lip, side step, rear bumper, rear spoilers, wide front and rear fenders plus a unique trunk spoiler that all combine to create a wide body beast! To fill up the space in the wheel wells, color-matched Rotiform wheels were added and pull off the aggressive Stormtrooper façade perfectly! A complete GT-R Air Lift Performance suspension package minimizes the gap from the wheel to the body, while an Air Lift Performance 3H digital air management system controls it all. “I was the first with the Aimgain kit,” he admits. “I like the way it looks from the rear. The rear fender flares actually wrap around the backside of the car like a kit from Liberty Walk or a Rocket Bunny one, but it looks more flush.” 38

hen you hit rap superstar status, your garage better reflect your bank account. Young Dolph didn’t waste any time with his fleet and made sure to one-up everyone else in the game with a custom camo collection that welcomes envious stares. Having jumped on the official music scene in 2016 when he released his debut studio album King of Memphis, he’s since then acquired a loyal fan base who can’t get enough of his raw sound and forceful lyrics. Just one of the many reasons why he’s been able to obtain his vast collection.

Young Dolph’s career seems to be going so well that in a recent YouTube video he is seen throwing a $22 million-dollar contract on the hood of his Wraith. He then looks at the camera and says, “F*ck the $22 million,” before bursting into laughter. Young Dolph is anything but modest and prefers to floss his goods in the flashiest way possible; a reason why he made sure to create a stand-out automobile collection that reflects his largerthan-life personality. While he has quite an elaborate garage, he decided on the Challenger, Ferrari, G-Wagon, Demon, Wraith and Bentley to shoot with, while boasting many other camo rides at home. “I did the G-Wagon first and loved that sh*t, and decided this was gonna be the pre sh*t and just went crazy with it,” he admits. “I decided to put the camo wrap on all my cars.” MAGAZINE 2018

Giving each of his rides heavy love, Young Dolph has them on a special rotation and makes sure he bumps his Paper Route artists in each of them, including tunes from the likes of Key Glock, Jay Fizzle and Bino Brown. Because he’s always one to floss the hottest customs around, he’s already anticipating January when he gets a new ride delivered. “I got that new Rolls-Royce SUV on the way!” The SUV he’s referring to is the Cullinan. Rolls-Royce’s new SUV offering is made with the same superior excellence as it’s other highend models but in utility form. Although not the first luxury automaker to come out with an SUV, Rolls-Royce made sure to wait until they perfected their model to release theirs, as it embodies everything the luxe carmaker is known for and then some. And more than likely, Young Dolph will also be dressing it in his prefered wrap of choice.

With a dream collection in everyone’s eyes, he admits he’s never really had that one car he had to have when he made it big. “To be real dawg, I ain’t never had a dream car. I never just had one car that I really wanted.” And he’s had quite a few rides in his lifetime, ranging from a Cutlass for his first ride ever to a Cadillac, which was his first big car purchase after his first payday. And as new stuff drops each year, it’ll definitely catch Young Dolph’s attention and he’ll most likely add it to his elaborate collection given he’s not showing any signs of letting up on his musical hustle. For him, music is his motivation, hobby, love and passion. He’s been grinding hard since his late teens. But it wasn’t until 2008 that he decided to finally release his first mixtape, Paper Route Campaign. Since then, he’s dropped more than a dozen other mixtapes, some singles and two full-length albums. He’s also currently working on his next feature, which is going to be some of his best work. “I got some legendary sh*t on it; I am not just saying that, too. I put some sh*t on there that has never been done before on an album. I think it’s great, I put some super creative sh*t together. I know I am going to get a couple plaques off it.” Young Dolph doesn’t just make music, he makes lyrical “art,” which is how he approaches his joints. “My pictures don’t look like nobody else’s pictures, I didn’t

The lingo we just bringing that sh*t to the forefront.” While continuing to grow his career, Young Dolph also hopes to inspire many of today’s young artists that are just coming up. “They need to have the mindset that they can be their own boss,” he explains. “Like myself, I’m independent. You really ain’t got to go looking for too much sh*t. All you got to do is work hard. Whatever you’ve got in your mind of what you want to do and got to do, work and work hard and that sh*t will come.” It looks like Young Dolph is living his advice because his future will hold “everything with a PRE stamp on that motherf*cker valued at a billion dollars.” Make sure to peep the new album, Role Mode, out now!

uring his ten years in the NFL, Chris Johnson has done things few other men in the history of pro football have ever done. He is a member of the legendary “2,000 Yard Rushing Club”, which gained him the moniker CJ2K. Other than Johnson, there are only six other players in NFL history who have broken this barrier in a single season, including Hall of Famers Barry Sanders, Eric Dickerson, and Terrell Davis. In 2009, he racked up the 7th most all-purpose yards of all-time (2,509) with the Tennessee Titans. That same year, he was named the NFL Offensive Player of the Year. To this day, his 4.24 second 40-yard dash is still the 2nd fastest ever officially recorded at the NFL Draft Combine. Johnson’s stats undoubtedly speak for themselves. It is no great shock that the cars he loves possess the same kind of explosive acceleration that has made him one of the most feared running backs of his generation. Looking at his current stable of four-wheeled beasts, what is clear is, if a car does not have at least 570 horses, a thunderous exhaust note, and the ability to liquefy its rear tires in a single pass, it does not qualify. But there’s more to Johnson’s career and to his cars than just the numbers. There is also that indefinable rush of pure adrenaline he gets when

patiently waits for a block to develop before making a lightning-quick cut and exploding through an opening for a touchdown. It’s that same rush he gets on an open Florida road as he smashes the gas pedal, chirps the mammoth rear wheels, and gets pushed back into his seat by the raw power of any one of his favorite whips. This summer, DUB had a chance to talk to Johnson about his love of high-end performance cars and how they mirror the unparalleled speed he has displayed throughout his career; speed that has left many a bewildered defender grasping at air in his wake in a futile attempt to stop him from getting to the goal line.

A moment from the 2009 seasons when Chris joined the 2,000-yard club. Photo courtesy of Donn Jones/Tennesse Titans.

When did you first notice that all your favorite cars were two-door sports coupes? I started looking at cars in high school and it was always sports cars. I just liked how they looked. Exotic. I’d see a Ferrari driving down the street and it would always catch my eye. Don’t get me wrong – I’ve had a Maybach 57, BMW X6, a BMW 750, a lot of cars. But my favorites are the coupes. My first one when I first got to the league was a red Corvette with spinners on it. My second car was a blue Bentley coupe with a red interior. How did you decide on getting your Ferrari 458 Italia? It was in 2012. I had always wanted a Ferrari. The first one that caught my eye was the California. But once I really got into (doing research on) them, I saw the 458 Italia with the hard drop top. I’m not a fan of soft tops. The Italia was faster, had more horsepower, and with that drop top, it transforms. It was perfect for me. 64

MAGAZINE 2018

What are some things you like the most about your 458 Italia? It’s got that red interior. That’s my favorite color. But when I got the rims, I knew I didn’t want too much red, so I went with the white with the trim in red. It looks great with the top up, but with the top down and that red interior, it looks even better. It gets pretty hot in Florida, so you have to drop the top but you also blast the AC. Get your hair blowing in the wind, all those types of things. As someone who already owned a Ferrari, what was it about the 2017 Aston Martin DB11 that caught your attention? I’m the type of person who, if I see a lot of people got something, I’ll wait until something new comes out. With the Aston, I was looking for something different. Everybody (in the NFL) has the Ghost, the Wraith, the Lambos. I wanted to get a car that I didn’t see one person have. When I came across the Aston, I loved it. I probably went to the dealer 3 or 4 times just to look at it.

The look of your DB11 is really unique. How did you decide on that color scheme? When I first got the Aston, it was white. I put a gloss Dragon Fire Red wrap on it. And then I also got the rims done black with the red trim - 22” Savinis. That’s all I really needed to do. How do your 458 Italia and the DB11 compare to each other? Do you have a favorite? The Aston and the Rari are different. The Rari is raw like a race car. The Aston is still fast, still got that torque, but it’s smoother. More of a relaxed ride. The Ferrari is more old school inside. The Aston has all the technology. When I wanna drive the Ferrari, it’s usually on the weekend or at a special event. It’s not the most comfortable to drive. It’s straight speed.

MAGAZINE 2018

65

Both are head-turners for sure. Which one gets more attention from bystanders? Both of them get attention. A white Rari is always gonna stand out, even if there’s a million of them in Florida. The Aston gets attention because a lot of people will still ask, “What is that?” A lot of people don’t know what a DB11 is; they just know is just an exotic coupe that they’ve never seen. I see you have a Can Am Spyder as well. That seems like a bit of a departure from all your two-door coupes. When did you get that? I’ve owned the Can Am for maybe 4 or 5 years. Got it painted Candy Red. It’s a similar color to the Aston but with chrome trim and accessories. I take it out every now and then but not too much. I got it mostly because it looks good (laughs). What do you use as your daily driver? I got the Benz in 2015. It’s an AMG S63 Coupe. It was silver when I got it. I originally got it wrapped in matte black. Now I got the pearl white wrap on it with the 22inch gold Savinis. It’s probably one of the smoothest cars I ever drove. I can drive it every day. One of the things it’s got that the others don’t is (on-screen) night vision. It’s futuristic, like a space ship.

MAGAZINE 2018

When you look at how you achieved your goal of being an NFL superstar and are able get the kinds of cars you only dreamed about as a kid, how does that make you feel? You know, as a kid, when you don’t have much, it drives you. To want to make it, to want to be great. It’s love for the game, but on top of that, you want to be able to provide for your family. Your family does everything in their power to raise you up when you’re a kid. You may not be able to pay your mom and your grandmother back for everything that they’ve done for you, but you can try. So, looking back your NFL career, out of all your achievements and the records you set, is there one thing that stands out that you are proudest of? I would say just making it to the NFL. That was my number one goal since way before high school. I’ve I put everything I had, all my rocks in one bucket. I did everything to make sure I reached that goal and make it to that level. I didn’t want to look back and think, “I should’ve done this or I should’ve done that.” I feel like with any goal you have in mind, if you put that much effort and time into it, you can be a success.

rowing up, many of us have quintessential movies that defined our youth. For a lot of old heads, it was the original Star Wars Trilogy. For youngsters today, it is the Marvel Comics Universe Avengers movies. But for a very specific group of fanatics who fell in love with car culture in the late ’90s and early 2000s, especially back when import drag racing was king, it was the original The Fast and the Furious trilogy. This was definitely the case for Chicago Bears defensive tackle John Jenkins. Long before he ever picked up a football in high school, John became obsessed with fast cars and the lifestyle surrounding them. As a kid growing up in snowy Connecticut, he sat in a theater marveling at the bright Miami landscape, blue exhaust shooting from tailpipes, and the roaring cacophony of engine noise and spooling turbos featured in the second and oftenoverlooked chapter of the iconic movie series, 2 Fast 2 Furious. The way other adults live out their childhood dreams by traveling to San Diego Comic Con dressed in Jedi costumes brandishing light sabers, John decided, as soon as he realized his NFL dreams, to move to South Beach and buy the legendary car known by many import performance lovers simply as Godzilla. We got to talk to John about how he built up his 1995 R33 Nissan Skyline to be a match for any of the next-level cars he has seen on screen.

MAGAZINE 2018

Anyone that talks to you can tell right away that you are a true performance car enthusiast. What first inspired that? What inspired my love of cars was 2 Fast 2 Furious with Paul Walker. When I saw that movie, from that point on, I wanted to move down to South Florida and I wanted a Skyline. I got into the whole culture behind it. You’d be surprised, the people you meet in the car scene. A lot of people in the scene don’t even know that I’m an NFL player. All they know is I got at GT-R. You must have been just a kid when 2 Fast 2 Furious came out. What was it like when you first got that glimpse into car culture? I was in middle school when 2 Fast 2 Furious first came out. I remember watching it like it was yesterday. Paul Walker pulling up to the scene after Ludacris called him out for the drag race. I remember him just getting in the car and taking off! Just to see that culture and to see them race. The cars, the beach, (laughs) the women! I was in middle school! I just thought to myself, “I wanna live in a place where I can see that all the time!” It gave me a sense of motivation and direction of what I wanted to do when I got older.

MAGAZINE 2018

75

There are so many sick cars in that movie, from classic American muscle cars like the Camaro and Charger to import legends like the Supra Twin Turbo. What made you choose the Skyline GT-R out of all those others as the one you wanted to own in real life? Other than seeing it in the movie, there was this game on Playstation 2 called Tokyo Xtreme Racer. My buddy was a big Honda guy. He loved the Acura NSX. So, I went a different route. I started using the (Skyline GT-R) R33. When I got older and other games came out like Gran Turismo, I’d always pick a Skyline. I just fell in love with it. When did you get your GT-R? It was my first car EVER. I waited until I got drafted to the NFL. My agent was asking what kind of car I was gonna get. He thought I’d get a Range Rover or a Camaro. You know, the typical. I told him I wanted a GT-R, but the old one. The one from Japan. A 1995 R33. What are your favorite mods that you have done with your GT-R? My favorite mods? (Laughs) There’s a lot! Well first, there’s the single turbo. Man, it’s just perfect. I’d say about 3,500 to 4,000 (rpms) is when it starts spooling. And when it kicks in? Oh my goodness! It’s highly aggressive. That’s probably the best thing I did was go to a single-turbo setup.

What else do you love about it? Another thing with the car is my Haltech ECU Flex Fuel system. I can go from E85 to pump gas easily. The goal is to get to mid 7s (700+ horsepower) to the wheel. I don’t want to do too much because I still want the car reliable. Then I got the Tomei motor with Tomei cams and stroker. It’s all Tomei power. As far as the interior, I got it done at E3 Upholstery in suede and modernized kind of like an R35. I moved the (sound) system inside the (cabin) from the trunk so I could put my fuel cell in there.

76

MAGAZINE 2018

What kind of reactions do you get when you drive a right-hand drive JDM masterpiece on the streets? Being in South Florida, it is one of the Meccas in the U.S. as far as the appreciation for cars. When I drive this car, kids and even people who don’t even know about cars, I get crazy attention from them wherever I go. They see that right-hand drive and they know the car is special. And people that do know their cars, they know I put a lot of time and effort into it and they know I did the car up right. My buddy, Marco at Billet Design Motorsports, he taught me everything I needed to know for my whole setup. He taught me every part I should put on and why I should put it on.

MAGAZINE 2018

77

Does driving a right-hand drive cause any issues? The hardest part about driving a right-hand drive car is getting used to the stick. First gear is all the way in the top left corner and 2nd is in the bottom left corner. Once you get used to that, you can drive it. What was the biggest challenge you faced when building the GT-R the way you wanted? The biggest challenge I had, strangely, was the windshield. It was the hardest thing by far I had to deal with. Dealerships couldn’t do it. I had to order one from NISMO Japan and when they shipped it over, it cracked. I ordered another one, and it cracked again! I finally had to overnight a windshield from England. Can you talk about your daily driver, the 2014 Jeep Rubicon? When I got drafted to New Orleans, I found out there’s potholes everywhere, so I needed another car next to the Skyline, so I got the Jeep. I told my pops and I told my mom I wasn’t going to do anything to it. It’s just to get back and forth to work. But I was driving to work one day and these two ladies pull up next to me on 35” tires and a 4” lift. And I was on stock suspension. One of them turns to me and says, “Baby, you gotta put some meat on them wheels!” So that’s when “Project Rubicon” came about. 78

MAGAZINE 2018

So what did you do to the Jeep to make sure you never got called out like that again? Let’s see, I got Rockstar 22s on 40” Toyos. 6” to 8” adjustable lift. Mopar cold-air intake. Haven’t done too much to the motor. Yet (Laughs). E3 Upholstery did the whole interior. T-top fiberglass sunroof. JL Audio system with the 9” Alpine screen. And I got a Transformers Autobot sticker on the side haha! I get a lot of love in the Jeep now. Now that you have hooked up your cars just the way you want, what’s next? With the Rubicon, I’m thinking about putting in a ProCharger or maybe even put a Hellcat motor in it. Maybe take it off-roading. For the Skyline, I can’t drive it fast the way I want to on the streets. I’m itching to track it. After this summer, I’m definitely going to have the numbers I want. I can’t wait to track it and get some quarter mile times.

comic book and sci-fi fanatic since the age of 10, Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Chris Conley seems to possess superpowers of his own. With a 4.35 40-yard time and a higher vertical jump than many of the guys who have won the NBA’s dunk contest, you might think he is a real-life Captain America. However, his true hidden power might be the ability to excel at pretty much anything he puts his mind to. Chris did not even play sports until high school, when he tried out for the football team because some of his friends were on the team. That led to a standout college career at the University of Georgia and eventually, a chance to pursue his dreams as a pro in the NFL.

82

MAGAZINE 2018

But while studying journalism and visual storytelling at Georgia, he also wrote, directed, and starred in his own student film, Star Wars: Retribution, which currently has more than half a million YouTube views and counting. While gearing up for the 2018 NFL season, Chris has also become consumed by a new passion: his 2018 Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport. Combining the explosiveness of his playing style with the visual appeal of one of his favorite sci-fi movies, TRON: Legacy, the Grand Sport was the perfect canvas that Chris utilized to make his sci-fiinspired vision come to life. Admittedly, he is relatively new to the automotive enthusiast scene, but with his knack for learning things at virtual light-speed, Chris may be building his own race car in no time. We caught up with Chris to talk about how he was able to merge all the great obsessions in his life into a rolling masterpiece.

When did you first want to become a pro football player? What players did you look up to as a kid? I started playing football in high school. I really didn’t play sports up until then. I had friends who were playing and I wanted to be involved. I started a lot later than most people. I’d watch videos of Jerry( Rice) of course. And then Julio (Jones), A.J. Green, and Larry Fitzgerald. Did you know from the start that you were a natural at football? It was a bit of a surprise for me. But it also came with a lot of work. The wins and losses were all lessons I learned from. I was a sophomore in high school when I started getting college offers. What was the moment when you realized that you could actually make it to the NFL? I didn’t really know it until I was a junior in college at (the University of) Georgia. Up until then, football was just a means to an end so I could go to college. What did you think you were going to get into after college, before you made the NFL your Plan A? I wasn’t really sure. I was in the journalism program because I knew I was decent in front of the camera talking about news and talking about sports. Early in college, I knew I wanted to tell stories and write narratively, so I started doing that and making short films. On that note, how did you first get interested in sci-fi and superhero stories? When I was a kid, my dad had this box of hundreds of comic books from his childhood. It all started really young for me, way before football. I was like 10 or 11. I got attached to these stories of heroes and how they would rise up out of nowhere. My brother and I would start making our own comic book stories. 84

Who are your favorite comic book characters? I’ve always been a big fan of Superman. Just this idea of a guy with all those powers who also has these realistic insecurities and sensibilities. And Black Panther. He has all this technology and this wealth and appears out of nowhere from this secret country. How’d you become a Star Wars fan? I watched the prequel movies with my dad when I was a kid. Then it branched out to the books. I’ve never really let go of it and it continues to this day. What made you want to get a Corvette and in particular, the Grand Sport? I love the widebody of the Grand Sport, the power, and how loud it is. But instead of going with the Z06 that comes with a supercharger on it (from the factory), I read about people getting the Grand Sport and supercharging it and doing the modifications themselves. I liked the idea of the car being a project that I could work on over the course of a couple years.

Can you tell me how your Corvette Grand Sport fits your style? I wanted to do something different. I had seen some TRON-inspired cars before, but some of them looked a little too complicated and weren’t quite right. So, I just sketched out an idea of what I wanted the lines to look like and how they’d complement the contours of the car. How do people react to seeing your Vette on the road? A lot of people pull over and take pictures. Some start driving out of their lanes and almost hit me. It definitely gets a lot of looks. What are your favorite things about your Grand Sport? I love being able to pop the top on but I didn’t want a convertible because I hate soft tops. It’s like an extension of my mind and of an idea that I hatched and sketched out myself. The guys over at Driving Impressions did a great job of making it a reality. 86

MAGAZINE 2018

What future mods do you have for your Vette? For this first year, I just want to enjoy the wrap and how it drives stock. But down the line, I want to supercharge it and get headers. After that, I may throw some drag radials on it and take it to the track. What are your goals for this season, and beyond? The goal is always to try to get to the Super Bowl. I’m really looking forward to the season. I’m coming off an injury and can’t wait to get back on the field. Off the field, I want to continue writing and learning about visual storytelling. So, one day, when I’m done with football, I can transition to that.

hen you know your calling in life, you go out of your way to make it happen. Jimmy Tonoyan of R1 Motorsport knew at 17 that he wanted to work on cars for the rest of his life and dropped out of high school. While some might frown upon such a risky move, Jimmy knew it would propel him to his future endeavors as a shop owner. An immense amount of hard work, trial/ error and perseverance has to take place in order to be successful, and Jimmy has been able to make his dreams come true turning R1 Motorsport into one of L.A.’s hottest shops in a few short years. The Ferrari 488 GTB is the perfect example why! Owned by a loyal client and good friend of Jimmy, the Ferrari was completely dressed for a bolder and more aggressive look thanks to Jimmy and his small crew. The 488 came in as an enviable red exotic, but left the shop as minty green over-the-top performance ride worthy of illicit stares from bystanders. The full Liberty Walk widebody kit includes front, rear and side diffusers for enhanced aerodynamic properties; a rear wing for reducing drag out on the track; and wide fenders for that signature look.

MAGAZINE 2018

Since the owner is an avid track enthusiast, Jimmy made sure it handled well on the track as well as on the streets, adding Novitec hydraulic adjustment suspension springs and a one-of-a-kind R1 Motorsport custom fabricated full exhaust that ups the horsepower from 660hp to 772hp (after all mods). The stance is perfect thanks to a set of staggered HRE 501 3-piece wheels, with 20” in the front and 21” in the rear that were paired with Pirelli P Zero ultra-high performance tires giving it the grip and performance expected from such a supercar. “[The owner] gives me the freedom to do what I think looks the best for the car,” Jimmy details. “We met five years ago at the track and ever since his first custom, he’s realized how much he could trust me.

He’ll mention a few brands and colors he prefers, but completely trusts me for the end result.” Having built a total of 10 cars for this particular owner in that last five years, Jimmy admits that the GTB is actually the fourth he’s done for him in just 2018! That’s exactly the reason why Jimmy doesn’t regret any of his past choices leading up to R1 Motorsport. The shop first started out as Royal Muffler given he was offering custom exhausts back in 1999. But after seven years of muffler work, Jimmy knew it was time to expand his offerings and created R1 Motorsport in 2011. “While I was doing the muffler thing, I was trusted with a few high-end projects and that started to increase after time. I realized I needed to branch out and changed the name and here I am now.” Although custom exhausts are still his forte, Jimmy has expanded his skills to include just about every part of the customization process. From kits,

suspensions, wheel and tire packages, wraps, vehicle tint and more, R1 Motorsport does it all. “As soon as I dropped out of high school, I started working with my uncle at a mom and pop shop,” Jimmy explains. “He taught me basic welding and from there everything else has been self-taught. My motivation and ability to teach myself new things got me to this level.” Now, Jimmy and his small team of four are churning out more builds than they can handle! “We’re completely booked a year out,” he admits. “I’m looking to hire new people since we’re getting all sorts of requests and I want to be able to do more cars.” Currently, they have more than 18 performance and luxury vehicles waiting to be given Jimmy’s magic touch. Fully hands on with every build that leaves the shop, Jimmy lives and breathes customization.

MAGAZINE 2018

97

“Don’t expect to find any bolt-on parts. Everything we do is custom. Our designs are more aggressive than other shops – we focus on track-spec and not just on looks,” he says. Currently, Jimmy’s working on Post Malone’s Lamborghini, but past celebrity clients include Kim Kardashian, Kobe Bryant, Tyga and plenty more. But Jimmy doesn’t focus his business solely on working on celebrity-owned vehicles. “I like working with enthusiasts more than anything. People who really know cars and appreciate the build entirely. I’m all about putting new things on the table and never duplicate any work.”

98

MAGAZINE 2018

While the shop is good at every aspect of their work, he admits it’s their wrap and fabrication game that’s on another level. Clients may go in for basic wheel and tire packages and leave with full builds a few weeks later, according to Jimmy. Although business is amazing right now, Jimmy’s far from getting comfortable. “It’s only growing bigger and bigger everyday,” he says. “ My goal for the next year is to get a larger space and more employees. But my ultimate goal is to have my own brand of exhausts made to be sold worldwide!”

THIRD TIME’S A CHARM

DANA BALTHASAR’S 2015 LEXUS RC F WORDS: KRISTIE BERTUCCI PHOTOS: BRIAN McGEE

L

ike many of us, Dana Balthasar became interested in customizing cars as a teenager. Spending countless nights and weekends with his buddies in someone’s garage or at a local tuner shop, Dana dreamed of the day his own build would make it into a magazine! Now his dreams have become reality with is Lexus RC F that turns heads thanks to its bold mods and eye-catching color-changing wrap. As his third build, the previous two are a far cry from this stunning Lexus luxury performance coupe. “In my early teens and 20s, I built a Honda Civic and Nissan 240SX,” he explains. “I’ve never been able to keep a car stock, even my work truck has been slightly modified to look different. That’s just my thing, I want my car to stand out from all the others.”

110

MAGAZINE 2018

The RC F was chosen because Dana wanted a V8, plus he loved the aggressive look of the car and how exclusive they are. “I rarely see a modified RC F where I live.” And exclusive is what Dana wanted to incorporate into the build as much as he could, opting for parts that would be a first. His first vision for the build was to start with an air suspension set up and a set of 20” wheels. From there, he knew the RC F needed to look bold and decided to go with a widebody. He lined up with Jon Sibal, a talented automotive artist and industry icon to help put his vision together. “We both ran ideas on how we were going to build the car, then John worked his magic and created a rendering so we could visualize how our ideas would look in true form. After that was done we worked on selecting the proper parts and partners we would use for the build. Once all that was decided the car went under the knife for its transformation.”

I’VE NEVER BEEN ABLE TO KEEP A CAR STOCK, EVEN MY WORK TRUCK HAS BEEN SLIGHTLY MODIFIED TO LOOK DIFFERENT. THAT’S JUST MY THING, I WANT MY CAR TO STAND OUT FROM ALL THE OTHERS. Currently, Dana’s RC F is the only one in the U.S. running a full widebody Pandem GT body kit. He was also the first to run the CR3P 20” wheels from Work Wheels. He also fitted an Armytrix exhaust for cold air intake system to add power and bring out the growl from its V8. On top of the already striking combination of modifications, he chose to wrap it in Avery Dennison’s ColorFlow Lighting Ridge vinyl wrap that really makes you give the Lexus a second, third and fourth look. “The wrap selection was one of the more difficult decisions. When building the car we wanted to wrap it a color that would really make the car pop and it had to be a color that had not been done before on this car.” In about four months time, the Lexus was finally ready to debut at Toyo’s Treadpass at the SEMA Show where admirers couldn’t stop talking about the wrap and widebody kit.

MAGAZINE 2018

111

“I could not have asked for a better reaction from the public on this build. I have met so many great people and have built many true friendships with all sorts of people from photographers, car enthusiasts, videographers, sponsors and car shops,” he says. “The car gets so much love and support it’s been a true blessing.” But don’t think that Dana’s RC F is strictly for show. “The car is a show car but she definitely isn’t a trailer queen. I drive the car as much as possible but mostly FriSunday. If my job didn’t require me to drive a truck I would drive this car every day.” Although it looks perfect now, Dana is still working on it. He’s looking to add a Varis Carbon Fiber Hood, a management system for the air suspension and an upgraded audio system. “I don’t think I would ever be done customizing the car, there is always something new I want to get or I’m always thinking of different ways to change the build up to give it a different look. I’m very lucky to have the support from my wife, she understands my passion and has been by my side throughout the entire process.” A lot of stress, sacrifices and money went into this Lexus, but for Dana, it was all worth it when he sees the admiration from fans!

A ’55 F-100 THAT WOULD MAKE WILE E. COYOTE JEALOUS

W

hen it comes to making impressions with a custom ride, there are many factors that can make or break it. Chris Beatty knew this and sought out to find the right shop to fulfill his visions of owning one of the wildest ’55 Ford F-100s. That’s when he turned to one of the industry’s best customizers, Lukasz (pronounced “Lu-KA-Zie”) Granicy of Needfulthingz Hot Rod and Fabrication Shop in Lancaster, CA. Once there, the stance was changed with a one-off custom suspension that features a TCI Engineering IFS and upside down triangulated 4-link with an adjustable cantilever weight distribution system. Fox shocks and Slam Specialties airbags were implanted, along with an AccuAir e-Level ride management system that controls the height of the truck. This was built to fit 20x8.5 and 20x15 Intro Vista II billet wheels with 14” Wilwood brakes. 126

Under the hood is a Mustang 5.0L 4-cam Coyote engine to make it a restomod / protouring truck. It is boosted to 14lbs. with a Kenne Bell 3.2 supercharger and controlled by an A.E.M. engine management system. Behind it is is a custom-built 4R70W transmission that is controlled by an HGM trans controller. A Currie Fab9 rearend houses a set of 4.10 gears to force the 750-whp to the 18” wide Mickey Thompson Sportsman tires out back. Countless body mods were performed, including many shaved items. The roof was also chopped 3”, hammer formed and TIG welded. In the rear is a custom bed with rounded and contoured edges. The front and rear fenders were modified to accommodate the unique running boards that feature a one-off Magnaflow polished stainless steel 3” exhaust. Since the owner is into woodworking, steam-pressed black walnut and curly maple with CNC-designed sections were added throughout. After all the detailed sheet metal work was finished, the truck was taken to Status Motorsports for Carlos Munos and his crew to bodywork this truck and lay down the “Coyote Brown” that was formulated with PPG materials. The interior features a full roll cage and a set of Sparco seats that were recovered in rich leather and a 4-point restraint. Other components include a Rockford Fosgate stereo system, Vintage Air AC controls, and an AccuAir TouchPad. Helping to keep

control is an Ididit steering column with Billet Specialties steering wheel. Lastly, the Dakota Digital gauge cluster lets Chris monitor the vitals when he bangs through the gears with a Lokar shifter. During the three-year build, Lukasz wanted to give this truck a theme and based it off the engine. It seemed fitting, and thus “The Coyote Truck” was born to represent what famed Looney Tunes character Wile E. Coyote would have built if given the opportunity. If you take a close look at the photos on these pages you will notice the many Ws that were implemented to solidify the theme. If only Acme would have made a truck like this, Wile E. Coyote might have caught that damn Roadrunner and put an end to his pesky “Beep Beep” noise!

HAPPY WIFE, HAPPY LIFE MRS. WIDEBODY KING’S EXTREME ESCALADE ESV

SHE LIKED THE RAM, BUT I KNEW SHE DESERVED BETTER, AND I GOT HER THE BIGGER ESV PLATINUM EDITION CADILLAC. SHE WANTED IT LIFTED, SO I HAD TO ADHERE TO HER WISHES.

138

MAGAZINE 2018

W

hen you’re the wife of an in-demand car builder, you have to deal with a lot of things. From long days and nights, SEMA crunches, hours upon hours of time at the shop and the constant talk about the latest projects and deadlines. It can really take a toll, but the perks are pretty amazing, too! And if you’ve followed our magazine for some time you know the work of Octavio “Topo” Villafana of TS Desings aka The Widebody King. This past year, Topo gifted his wife with a massive Cadillac Escalade of her dreams. Prior to the Escalade, Mrs. Villafana was content daily driving her lifted Ram truck and although she was content with it, Topo wanted to build his queen a regal rig.

“She actually had an Escalade a few years back, but it was stolen,” he admits. “She liked the Ram, but I knew she deserved better, and I got her the bigger ESV Platinum Edition Cadillac. She wanted it lifted, so I had to adhere to her wishes.” Topo knew someone else had done a lifted standard Escalade before, but hadn’t seen an ESV spec’d out with a custom lift. Since height was a requirement from his wife (and you know the saying, “happy wife, happy life”), Topo went with 15” 4-link Full Throttle lift with King bypass shocks and coilovers. The stance is set right with a set of 26” TIS Forged wheels wrapped in Fury Country Hunter tires. “She wanted black and rose gold as the ESVs colors, so I made it happen,” he explains. “We pretty much wrapped all the trim in rose gold. We also added a big brake kit from Rotora and a badass Kicker sound system that the fellas at Pacific Stereo in Riverside, CA, installed.”

MAGAZINE 2018

139

At the same time he was working on the ESV, Topo was also busy building a Ford Mustang for Brad and Doug DeBerti of Discovery Channel’s “Twin Turbos.” Because he was getting their Ford ready for SEMA (where it won “Best Ford”), the father-son building duo helped Topo get the ESV finished in time to also be showcased at the show. “They pretty much installed everything for me. I guess it was a good trade off since they won an award at the show,” Topo laughs.

140

MAGAZINE 2018

The ESV rolls large on rose gold 26x16 TIS Forged F51 wheels and wrapped 40x15.50R26LT Fury Off-Road Country Hunter MT tires and bolted on with True Spike lug nuts. Stopping power is provided by a precision set of forged alumiun Rotora 8-piston caliper (front) and 4-piston caliper (rear) big brake kit.

MAGAZINE 2018

141

The completed ESV is definitely a head turner and it’s pretty much impossible to not look at the lifted luxury SUV in awe. It’s been to SEMA, as well as being taken off-road in Glamis (if you don’t believe us, check out the Instagram vids at @wide_body_king). But the most rewarding rides have been to the school. It’s their daughter who loves it most, always asking to be dropped off in it. “She loves the attention she gets when she rolls up at school in the morning. Everyone comes over and wants to see it!” In the next few months Topo plans to add more to the sound system, more rose gold trim and then give it some extra power with the addition of a supercharger. But for the most part, the Mrs. is loving her new ride!

The system was installed by Pacific Stereo and includes: (4) 12” L7 Kicker subs, (2) 100/1 Kicker amp and (4) Kicker component sets
