UB is more than just about rides – we’re about the people behind those rides. Because let’s face it, a lot of hard work, time, planning, preparation goes into building these magnificent machines that we all gawk at when turning these pages. That’s why we like to feature Power Players in the industry to showcase their talent, devotion and backstories on how they became known names in customizing. We’ve been doing it for years and for this Issue, we’ve got the lowdown on Pro Motorsports in Arizona.

Motorsport a household name in Los Angeles and set the bar for high-end vehicle customization.

Owned by Jim Lewis, the shop made its name working on cars for a few pro athletes and have since grown to become the go-to shop that caters to hundreds of pro athletes and anyone with a vision of creating their custom dream ride.

Will Frazier’s 1973 Chevy Caprice is a true gem that has gone through three different transformations. But it’s his latest and final version that means the most for him. It’s not only a prized ride for its looks, but also for the memories it provides him of his late son.

And speaking of Power Players, we take a quick look back to 10 years ago when the Keshishyan brothers made Platinum

We’ve also provided a sneak peek into some of the hottest Detroit Auto Show vehicle debuts and have coverage from DUB Show Live! at the L.A. and Philly Auto Shows.

We also caught up with John Sarkisyan and his award-winning 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing that took home DUB’s Best of Show presented by Amsoil award at SEMA. ne look at John Sarkisyan’s vintage 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing at the 2018 SEMA Convention, and you’d have to lift your jaw from the floor like the rest of its admirers. As the winner of the DUB’s “Best of Show presented by Amsoil” award, the Gullwing was literally a masterpiece in the eyes of many, with its classic exterior styling and all-modern AMG internals and handcrafted interior. Almost every car enthusiast on Earth lusts after the classic Benz racecar from the 1950s, and John was no different. Its wide stance, long hood and gullwing doors make it an impressive vehicle that all add to its iconic demeanor and just a few reasons why it can sell for up to a million dollars when in pristine condition. “I’ve always loved the Gullwing, as most do,” John details. “It’s been a long time dream car for me. I even have a tattoo of a Gullwing on my arm that I got years ago, never thinking I’d actually ever get one.” WORDS: KRISTIE REAL PHOTOS: BRIAN McGEE

When the chance of a lifetime came up to acquire such a beauty, John didn’t think twice. A gentleman had offered him an original Gullwing body made from a mold of a version that had only 12,000 miles on it (and is currently sitting in a museum in Connecticut). John was obviously blown away at the offer. The story goes that the gentleman had sent the car to Germany in the late-’70s to have the factory restore it to original condition. “The day he got it back, he took the whole car apart, and made a mold of the body and all of the original parts,” John explains. “He used to produce them in the ’80s. He made about 40 cars, and then stopped. But he kept all of his molds, of course. My brother and I met him by chance, and were able to acquire the last body that he had made. That’s when this project started, which was about six months before the 2018 SEMA Show.”

With the SEMA crunch looming over his head the entire build, John knew he had to step up his customizing game in order to unveil his dream ride. The initial plan was to use the original frame that was given to him since he wanted to keep things as authentic as possible. “Then we found out that the R171 SLK (19982004 models) has the exact same wheelbase, to the millimeter, of the original Gullwing. So we decided to use an AMG model, which was an SLK32 AMG as the base car, with its more modern chassis, suspension, etc. and decided to go with the ‘modern classic’ idea, which incorporates modern technology, but with the classic looks of the iconic Gullwing.”

To get everything started, the SLK32 was completely chopped up, which didn’t end until all the necessary AMG parts were finally able to fit the gullwing body over the SLK frame. “It was a huge job that took over a month to complete! We realized that it was a bigger job than any of us imagined it would be and the car fought back every single step of the way. Nothing was easy on the build.” Although the initial idea was to keep the original interior, John changed his mind and decided to go custom with everything. They left the original console of the SLK32 to keep the important functions, but asked his friend Alan Iwamoto to build the rest of it. “Alan was the driving force in the design and ultimately the execution,” John mentions. Because it was a Gullwing, it deserved the best of the best so the team went with Brembo brakes and HRE wheels wrapped inside Toyo tires. A KW suspension was added and Needswings provided the engine parts, which are second to none when it comes to the SLK platforms, John adds. “My good friend, Jose Reyes, of Reyes Upholstery in Tustin, CA, who I have done builds with for 15 years, wrapped the interior with real leather. We used a lot of hides of leather for this car. We also enlisted Pedro Valdez of Colores Powdercoating to coat everything. Very few people knew about this build, and virtually none of them thought we would finish the car in time for the SEMA show. We also had our doubts, but in the end Alan made it possible.”

But all that hard work, time and money was well worth it since he took home the special SEMA award. “It was amazing recognition of the hardest, most stressful car build I have ever dived in to. We were a couple of hours late to get to SEMA, so we were disqualified from the “Battle of the Builders” competition, which was a huge downer at the time, but then when we received the ‘Best of Show’ award from DUB/ Amsoil - that was incredible. We forgot all about the other award ‘Battle of the Builders’. To get a ‘Best of Show’ award at SEMA, is something I never thought would happen in my wildest dreams.”

@SLANG500 While the majority of people were impressed by the Gullwing, a few purists didn’t appreciate someone messing with perfection. “The car was surrounded with people and cameras the entire week. No one expected this car to show up at SEMA the way it did. People were as amazed as I still am with this car.” Now John plans to enjoy his creation, attending car shows and getting in lots of cruising miles!

ohn Sarkisyan has made his mark as an automotive artist with his unique style that stands out amongst a crowded field of “builders.” Having owned a tuning shop and customizing his own personal cars, John is no stranger to great builds. His first project was a 2000 Honda Accord Sedan 19 years ago, which landed him a few magazine covers. He also garnered much notoriety with his VW Bug, with over $100k in modifications, that was on the cover of almost every VW magazine, as well as his 2003 Brabus CLK500 and CLS63 AMG. He even spent more than 600 hours

on a customer-commissioned E36 BMW M3, which he used as a canvas to showcase his artistic talents by using black Sharpie pens. The culmination of his experience resulted in a couple of builds that were part resto-mod, part lowrider with a bit of art deco, but 100% outlaw. These outlaw 365s are quite a sight to see in photos and are even more captivating in person as they invite you to look deeper into all the details. John and his brother Edison have really set the bar with these two builds that showcase their wicked artisanship!

The Sarkisyanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s fitted a Nardo gray BECK Speedster body over a modified 1964 VW Beetle chassis. The interior is fully handcrafted and dressed in red leather with a one-off Budnik steering wheel, a Porsche 550 spyder hand brake, custom shifters and pedals, Heuer stopwatches and audio components from JL Audio and a McIntosh amplifier in custom suitcase enclosure.

The 356 also rides on staggered set of Fifteen52 Outlaws 15 x 5.5 front and 15x6 rear wheels paired with Toyo R888R 205/55R15 front and 225/55R15 rear tires. Stopping power is provided by a Wilwood front and rear brake kit and the ride height is set through an adjustable suspension system.

The stunning interior also has a one-off Budnik steering wheel and full leather interior with rear seat delete. The instrument cluster relocated to the center of the dash and features a Porsche 550 style hand brake. The elaborately engraved gas cap was relocated to the center of the hood and custom leather straps hold the hood and trunk in place.

ome builds are dreams turned reality, while others are ways to honor or remember. Gordon “Will” Frazier’s is a combination of both. His 1973 Chevrolet Caprice was his and his son Tristen’s dream car. He searched high and low for the old school and eventually found it online in an Autotrader ad back in 1998. It was a rare, one-owner gem, with only 23,000 documented miles. For only $8,500, the Caprice was literally a steal for Will! “I had to have it,” he explains. It traveled all the way from Austin, TX, to Savannah, GA, and was Will’s prized position. He nicknamed her “Nelly,” and went to work making it his own. “I replaced the vinyl top, battery and four new tires to make it a beautiful daily driver,” he says. “Over the years, I painted it three times and changed out the rims and sound system. But the one that that never changed was the fact that my son Tristen wanted the car, so I was never going to get rid of it.”

OVER THE YEARS, I PAINTED IT THREE TIMES AND CHANGED OUT THE RIMS AND SOUND SYSTEM. BUT THE ONE THAT THAT NEVER CHANGED WAS THE FACT THAT MY SON TRISTEN WANTED THE CAR, SO I WAS NEVER GOING TO GET RID OF IT.

When his son was a junior in high school, Will felt it was time to transfer Nelly to her new owner and “Escobar” was born (nicknamed after the infamous drug lord after the two of them watched a documentary on Pablo Escobar). Transplanting an LS3 engine, KL90 transmission and 373 gears more than doubled the power of the Caprice. It was then re-painted with PPG Vibrance Cabernet candy paint to give it that custom look. The stance was enhanced with 22” rims and an AccuAir air ride suspension system was added. The end result was a 16-year-old’s dream come true. It wasn’t until after Tristen graduated high school and moved from Panama City, FL, to Georgia to live with Will did he mention he wanted something more for Escobar. According to Will, he was inspired by all the race cars he’d see at Atlanta Motor Speedway during the various father/son outings they’d do. 50

“Tristen really enjoyed seeing people race their cars and at that point, we decided to sell everything from the first build and do a big rim race car/ fast ass daily driver build,” Will describes. “We chose a 4L80 transmission this time with a 3,200 stall converter and added an aluminum drive shaft hooked to a Moser 9” rear end, which is packed full with Nitro gears and axles.” A Magnuson supercharger amps up horsepower, which required a powerful big brake kit like Baer’s 6-piston system, with drilled and slotted rotors, to fit the job. While the third transformation on the Caprice was still underway thanks to some help from Zack Martin, Tristen became homesick and moved back to Florida. It was during this time Will received horrific news that would change his life and the way he looked at the car. “On October 8, 2017, I was told that Tristen had taken his own life. At that moment, my life changed forever. I spoke to my son about everything growing up, but never about suicide. Tristen had a million -dollar smile and hid a lot of pain behind it. So over the next few months, the build slowed down as I was battling depression.”

The Caprice was far from being finished, but Will was determined and to honor Tristen’s memory made sure that it came out like the race car his son wanted. Tristen deserved the best and Will spared no expense making Escobar exactly how they envisioned. Even through the power of social media, the owner of Rucci wheels heard about Tristen’s death and provided a set of one-off 26” wheels with a matching steering wheel with Tristen’s nickname “T Money” on it. Will debuted the Caprice almost a year after Tristen’s death at Summit Racing in McDonough, GA. “Escobar was the first big rim car or Donk ever to be on display there,” he notes. “The videos posted went viral. The comments were positive and people came from other states to see it in person. I actually couldn’t believe a car could have such an overwhelming impact in the car and Donk culture.” Will never plans on parting ways with the Caprice, using it for car shows, charity events and even drag racing. “I love the car, but not for what I once loved it for. But for all the memories and wonderful times Tristen and I shared in it. This was my first and last build because nothing will ever measure up to it in my eyes.”

ou dream it, we source it, we build it, we deliver it!” is Pro Motorsports’ slogan and mission, as they customize rides in the Scottsdale, AZ, area. Owner Jim Lewis grew up around cars thanks to his dad, so owning his own shop was a natural progression in his love of all things automotive. “My dad would always have some type of hot rod around and we would work on it on the weekends,” Jim recalls. “He had some nice ones from Boyd [Coddington] and many others. It was always so cool going to those shops and seeing all the different things they did.” Fascinated with the world of customization, Jim and his brother started tinkering on their own rides in high school and have never stopped. “It’s just gotten bigger and better,” he exclaims. The shop began because the brothers wanted a place to customize rides for family and friends. A few pro athletes he knew at the time saw what he was doing and wanted him to work on their cars. “A player with the KC Royals asked me if I could fix one up for him and it just started taking off from there. Since then, we’ve built more than 645 athletes’ cars to date and many more for countless friends and clients.” Pro Motorsports does it all but paint, which provides clients the convenience of not having to scout out different shops for all the things they want to do to their cars. Because Jim wants to provide the best experience and product possible, he’s continually striving to stay on top of every cutting-edge technology out there, no matter how big or small. Although he’s always busy, Jim makes sure that he has his crew go through constant training to be able to stay at the top of their game to keep them one of the most sought after shops in the region.

“Nothing is more important than the relationships I build with our clients,” he explains. “The bottom line is, I’ve always loved sports and I truly enjoy the great amount of time I spend with my pro clients. So many of them have become great friends and because of the time I commit to them, we really know how to make their vision an efficient and convenient reality. In return they know they can totally trust us at a time in their lives when so many people are trying to take advantage of them. We won’t defy that trust. It’s what got us here.”

Although they don’t advertise at all (their business comes from word of mouth, something Jim is extremely proud of), they’ve grown exponentially over the years. What started in a 1,000-sq.-ft. garage has transformed into a 10,000-sq.-ft. facility and have expanded their business in other states. With thousands of builds under the belt, Jim mentions that they’ve done plenty of cool and notable ones like an Escalade they built for Sony that received a GM design award. They also had a Hummer H2 for GM that was an open top, as well as Hummer H2 on tank tracks (but before they were cool, he mentions.) They did the Rebel truck for Harley-Davidson and have had 82 car magazine features through the years. They’ve done everything from old hot rods to the latest and greatest new body style releases. 58

“The future is bright,” Jim says. “People still really love their cars and we still love working on cars and making visions a reality. People will always want to add their own personal touches and we’re here to make that happen for them. Also, companies still have us build show and display cars for them - which we also love to do. The economy is growing and consumer confidence is at a 18-year high. Seriously, we could not be more positive about the future.” With 23 years in the industry, Jim has seen it all when it comes to changes. “I’m really looking forward to seeing what happens over the next 23. Besides, 23 is a great number for an obsessive Jordan fan like me. It’s going to be a great year!”

lthough many think SEMA is our last show of the year, we aren’t entirely done until we get through the LA Auto Show! As soon as we came back from Vegas, we had to gear up and get everything ready for our special DUB Show Live! area in The Garage exhibit area of the LA Auto Show. This year didn’t disappoint with some of the hottest cars from SEMA also showcased. Doczilla showed off some of his impressive rides all the way from Canada, while Extreme Off-Road from Houston, TX, had their F-250 on massive 30s on display. Other rides showcased included a few from Yokohama, TIS, Dropstars, Nitto, Impressive Wrap, Liberty Walk, Monster Energy, American Fastbacks, Lexani, Rennen, Simbolo X, and Forgiato. Also, several awardwinning lowriders were representing from Los Angeles, Klique and Tehcniques car clubs.

CADILLAC XT6 The new three-row crossover is powered by a 3.6-liter V6 that’s linked to a nine-speed transmission. It’ll be offered in Sport (pictured) or Luxury version and sit between the popular XT5 and the truck-based Escalade. It’s the first-ever Caddy to offer three rows of seating without compromising luxury or size.

FORD EXPLORER ST AND HYBRID The Explorer has been a popular SUV for a while now, and Ford showed off the most powerful Explorer yet, with a 3.0-liter turbo engine with the ST model. The Sport mode in the ST model adjusts various items, including shift schedule, engine note and throttle and steering response. It also features a more aggressive body, with its unique grille and gloss-black accents. The new Hybrid will be available in two trims - Explorer Hybrid and Explorer Limited Hybrid - depending on what sort of luxury additions you desire. 68

FORD SHELBY MUSTANG GT500 The most powerful street-legal Ford ever produced will have more than 700 ponies under the hood. It’s estimated to go from zero to 60 mph somewhere in the mid-3-second range. The GT500 was designed to excel on both the race track and drag strip and will feature the largest factory front brakes ever put on an American sports coupe.

INFINITI QX INSPIRATION CONCEPT Infiniti gave us a glimpse into future designs with their QX Inspiration Concept, which is an all-wheel-drive electric crossover, with a lounge-inspired interior and a battery pack that’s built into its floor. You won’t see a front grille to cool the engine since it features electric motors that power the car’s wheels. Instead, it’s been replaced with sculpted panels and an illuminated Infiniti logo. KIA TELLURIDE The boldly styled Telluride will be Kia’s biggest crossover and their most luxurious. The 3-row crossover will seat up to eight passengers and will be right above the Sorento in Kia’s SUV lineup. It’s powered by a 291-hp 3.8-liter V6 and be available in either front-or all-wheel drive. Although it’s based on the Sorento, the Telluride is more appealing thanks to a number of different exterior mods like it’s boxy, angular silhouette and updated head-and taillights.

LEXUS RC F / RC F TRACK EDITION The pair of high-performance sports coupes get their power from a 5.0-liter V8 engine that provides the cars with 472 hp. Both cars feature an eight-speed automatic transmission and will be available later this year. LINCOLN CONTINENTAL COACH DOOR EDITION The Lincoln Continental’s iconic suicide doors have returned with the their 80th Anniversary Coach Door Edition, which will only see 80 models being produced for 2019, and 80 more for 2020. NISSAN IMS CONCEPT The IMs Concept is a vision of the company’s electric future, with the wild “elevated sports sedan” featuring an under-floor-mounted battery pack. There’s also a tall cabin with two front seats and rear seating that fits three passengers, or one in a throne-like middle position.

RAM HEAVY DUTY Ram brought out their new heavy-duty 2500 and 3500 pickup trucks, which feature class-exclusive cabin technology, massive towing capability and safety features that aren’t found on rival pickups. Both feature a Cummins diesel engine that’s rated at a record-setting 1,000 pound-feet of torque and can top up to 35,100 pounds. They’re built on a new frame that’s mostly made of high-strength steel. Although they feature a unique front-end design, both still inherit a cab from the recently redesigned light duty Ram 1500.

TOYOTA SUPRA The Supra finally returns to the Toyota lineup after a 21-year absence. It’ll be dressed with all the latest automotive technology and the twoseat sports coupe will be powered by a 350-hp turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine. he Philadelphia Auto Show isn’t just one of the first shows of the season, but it’s also first stop for our annual DUB Show Tour! We touched down in the City of Brotherly Love for an exciting DUB Show Live! on February 2nd and showcased some of the finest rides until the 10th. It was an awesome week of fun and loads of automotive eye candy. The beautiful Monster Girls signed autographs and took pics with fans at the Monster Lounge (where they also sampled the latest Monster flavors). The LFTDx LVLD section featured the baddest trucks and Jeeps around! Lil Uzi also showed up with his fleet of rides on display with Car Effex.
