he annual November gearhead pilgrimage to the SEMA Show at the Las Vegas Convention Center is just as exciting as it is a monstrous task. Seeing thousands of meticulously built custom cars and countless innovations of new aftermarket products at the show is Nirvana to any car enthusiast, but in the end, sensory overload gets the best of you. Still, people like us come back home from SEMA motivated and inspired. DUB Show LIVE!’s display outside of the convention center’s South Hall was one of the most popular spots for automotive eye candy. Luxury4Play’s matte white Bugatti Veyron was the centerpiece of the exhibit and, undoubtedly, the talk of the show. Dropstars and TIS Wheels also came back to the SEMA Show as part of American Tire Distributor’s DUBGarage.com launch, while the new Monster Energy Edition off-road wheels were unveiled.

One’s SEMA experience isn’t complete without going to one of the many industry parties. For most SEMA attendees who work at the show all day, evenings are a time to let loose, and there is one party that proves to be the only “must attend” event of the week. Our annual DUB Expo Party and DUB Awards were held at Vanity Nightclub inside the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino. Lucky party-goers, who either finagled their way in or were patient enough to wait in line, were treated to a private performance by Snoop Dogg, who blew the place apart with his arsenal of hits. Just a couple of weeks before the SEMA Show, we had the chance to hangout with “Jersey Shore” star Pauly D for a photo shoot and interview. It’s amazing to see how Pauly’s feet still remain firmly planted on the ground while his music and reality TV careers are on a meteoric rise. This Rhode Island native has come a long way from driving his Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme, but fame and fortune has not changed him in the slightest—other than what he drives, of course. He now cruises the streets in a S-Class AMG, and when the situation calls for more excitement, a monstrous Kawasaki GSXR custom crotch rocket by Killer Kreations delivers the adrenaline rush he craves. Fast cars and music have always gone hand-in-hand, but who would have thought racing cars and making music would also complement nicely? Jim Jonsin’s daily grind is producing hit songs for Grammy Awardwinning artists like Beyoncé, Lil Wayne, Kanye West and Eminem, while doing double duty as a race team owner/driver (a la current NASCAR champion Tony Stewart) for Rebel Rock Racing on weekends.

As the Mexican equivalent to Lil Wayne, it only makes sense that Larry Hernandez, “The King of Corridos,” would aspire to have a Bugatti. He may not have it yet, but it’s safe to say he’s pretty happy with his growing collection, sporting an eclectic mix of rides that were hooked up by JC Customs. Larry has become a major player in the Mexican music scene and many anticipate him to stand alone once he drops his highly anticipated album this year.

DUB has seen it’s share of cars…from the ultra-exotic to the down right ridiculous, but we’ve never seen a customized vehicle quite like D3’s Le Monstre—a 1,000+ horsepower, satin-black, widebody Cadillac CTS-V. There is nothing south of $150K that can match the combination of form and sheer recklessness. It’s mind-blowing...

Cain’s Still Bringing the Pain
Jersey Shore Guilty Pleasure
I am a HUGE Cain Velasquez fan and was one of the many Mexicans cheering for him at his last fight in Anaheim. Man, it was hard to see him go down like that ’cause I thought he would knock Dos Santos out! Even though he lost, he’s still the man! Dos Santos better enjoy that title for now ’cause I see Cain coming back and taking it away from him soon! While I was at the fight, I checked out DUB’s big Tailgate Party and picked up that issue with Cain on the cover and must say that his Ford Raptor and classic Ford Torino definitely suit him well!
I must admit...MTV’s “Jersey Shore” is a guilty pleasure of mine, but just because Jwoww and Sammi are so hot and all the drama on the show is pretty funny. My jaws dropped in Issue 75 and I was shocked to find out that Situation owns all those rides! And then to top it all off, his brother, too! I still think his brother “The Man” is mooching off of Mike’s fame, but whatever. It was shocking to find out just what types of rides he has…and, yeah, I’m a bit jealous.
Roberto J. Long Beach, CA We feel your pain, Roberto, because we were rooting for Cain in that fight, too! Cain was coming off an injury and was out of the cage for more than a year, while the always
Justin E. Via E-mail tough JDS was on a winning streak and proved he was the better fighter that night. We can’t wait for a rematch! As for his cars, he does have a heavy-hittin’ collection, and our favorite is his Ford Raptor…it’s a beast!
Nothing But Laughs
He’s definitely made it into a career and you can’t hate on that, Justin. “The Situation” not only gets paid per episode, but he also has a lot of endorsement deals. And let’s not forget he has his own company, so he can afford such an impressive collection of wheels. Trust us, we’re
Mr. Exclusive Damn, it must be nice being Akon! Sittin’ on top of the music industry not only as an artist, but as a label CEO, too. The fact that he helped spark the career of Lady Gaga says a lot, and given the success she’s having, he probably doesn’t need to work anymore! I would kill to see his entire car collection, though. I can just imagine how awesome it would be to have sick rides all over the globe. His Spyker and Ferrari 458 are probably tops in his collection. I’d sport either one, but wasn’t feeling the white and yellow interior…just sayin.’
Kevin Hart is funny as sh*t and is one of the most underrated comedians out there. His stand-up is hilarious and his latest Laugh at My Pain had me rollin’ the whole time! I was hurtin’ after the movie ’cause I was laughing so hard. Then when I saw his cover at the store, I had to buy me a copy. It’s amazing that he’s able to take life’s hardest things and make them so funny. I’m a huge Hart fan now and enjoyed reading more about him. Thanks for featuring him! Oh and his car collection is pretty cool, too! Tammika L. Via E-mail
They do say that “laughter is the best medicine” and if so, Kevin Hart is one of the best doctors out there! While on location for the shoot, he had us cracking up in between takes, so we know what you mean about laughing “so hard.” He’s definitely a down-to-Earth and real dude, and we expect to see more of his comedy and movies in the future!
Gerome H. Via E-mail Akon is a pretty big deal and his car collection reflects it. But really, he’s the nicest guy out there. We couldn’t have asked for a better

just as jealous as you are! And, for sure, the show is also a guilty pleasure for many on the DUB Staff. Keep a look out as we will be featuring a few more of the cast members such as Pauly D in this issue.
interview given the short amount of time we had with him. He deserves all the success he has and more! The fact that he’s really motivated to inspire new artists so that they can have the same opportunities he’s been afforded says a lot. Oh, and that white and yellow interior isn’t that bad; you just need to see it up close ’cause it looks as smooth as butter in person!

hen a highly respectable and notable Al & Ed’s Autosound client walked into the shop, requesting a completely unique look for his Porsche Panamera, Al & Ed’s owner Elie Rothstein knew it needed the new Vorsteiner V-PT Panamera Grand Touring kit. Having helped broker the deal on the purchase of the Panamera GT when it first came out, Rothstein’s high-profile attorney client was at first happy with a set of 22-inch GFG Wheels, but soon wanted more after noticing all the Panameras on Los Angeles city streets. “He didn’t like how his Panamera looked like everybody else’s and wanted his to really stand out,” Rothstein says. “As a Vorsteiner dealer, when they announced the new body kit, I knew it was a perfect fit. One can fully appreciate the fact that it has just enough customization on it without being too over the top. Some of the other kits out there are just too obnoxious for him and his image.” Touted as “Business suit by day, race track by night,” the Vorsteiner V-PT kit was released this past summer and provides a sophisticated edge in the styling department. It features new front and rear bumpers, side skirts and a titanium sport exhaust. “The kit required minimal to no massaging or modifications to make it fit
tech specs
properly and it’s a very extensive program,” he adds. To complete the styling, Rothstein added 21-inch Vorsteiner wheels to give the Panamera an aggressive stance. With free reign and an unlimited budget, Rothstein also did a complete audio install that depicts his ultimate audio recipe at its best. In business since 1954, Al & Ed’s Autosound has a pretty extensive history when it comes to audio, especially knowing how to seamlessly customize high-end vehicles such as the Panamera. Since it came with an all-encompassing infotainment system, removing the stock headunit wasn’t even an option and was the only stock audio piece left untouched. All the speakers were upgraded using Focal component speaker sets, which to Rothstein, are “arguably the finest and most expensive speakers in the
world.” To add some crisp and deep bass, a pair of JL Audio subwoofers were added with their own custom enclosure that sits in the cargo area of the Panamera, along with Alpine amplifiers. “The amount of wattage and power rating between all the amps is more than 2,200-Watts of true CEA rated power,” Rothstein describes. “I always like to use Alpine amps in my audio recipe because they have a tremendous amount of clean power in a very small package, which allows you to easily fit them anywhere without any problems.” In all, the result was beyond what the client anticipated, Rothstein notes. “When we rolled up to his home in Brentwood, CA, he was anxiously awaiting us in the driveway already. He had this instant grin on his face as I drove up with the car and it was right then and there that I immediately knew he was thrilled with everything.”

nown for his high-energy persona, catchy phrases and towering spiky do, Paul DelVecchio, aka DJ Pauly D, has infiltrated the pop culture with his MTV stint on “Jersey Shore,” and intense DJ sets that have caused him to be one of the most in-demand DJs in the States and internationally. He may have a largerthan-life personality, but Pauly D is actually a down-to-Earth guy, who isn’t looking to be the center of attention or wrapped up in all sorts of drama, but is just looking to share his musical passion with the world. The Rhode Island-native Guido is as real as

real can get, and isn’t just showing off for the cameras, something that will be better seen in his new spin-off show hitting MTV this year. Gearing up for whirlwind of a year, DJ Pauly D dishes out his unexpected audition request for the “Jersey Shore,” his dream career as a DJ and other passion, bikes and cars! What’s your automotive love consist of? I love cars and bikes. I’m just a big motorsport fan, so I love bikes and cars equally. I’ve been into cars and bikes pretty much my whole life. I like dirt bike racing, dune buggies, NASCAR and Indy car racing. Anything that goes fast. I remember how every Christmas when I was younger, I’d always get a battery-powered toy bike or car and I always would fool around with those. I just liked to get up and go.
What kind of bikes do you like in particular? I like the rice rockets the best because they go really fast. I just got a custom-made Chopper, but the rockets are fast. With the Choppers, you just cruise. You got a bike made by Killer Kreations. How does that bike represent you as a person? They approached me. I was like let’s definitely do this. That bike totally represents me as a person. I love music, I love bikes and they went above and beyond with the paint job. It’s completely custom down to the exact DJ equipment I use, which they put in the paint job. They also put an iPod dock
on the bike, so I can listen to music while I ride and my “DJ Pauly D” logo into the paint job as well. I rode it while out in Vegas when they first gave it to me and it was awesome! I’m thinking about putting it in some shows, but it’s definitely not going to just be a show bike. I’m definitely going to be riding it out! What kind of cars do you have in your garage? I have a Mercedes-Benz S-Class AMG that’s custom. A 2008 Cadillac DTS, which is my everyday car. I also have a custom Big Bear Chopper bike and my Killer Kreations bike. I want a truck for the winter, maybe something like an Escalade in Diamond White. I usually work on all my cars myself (well, for the most part). How do you find the time to work on your cars? It’s just a hobby I have, so whatever down time I do have I work on my cars or bikes. Whenever I’m not DJ’ing, I’m working on my cars and bikes. Before, march 2012 dubmag 29
I used to do everything and just barely started branching out to have things done. All my bikes are customized and so are my cars. I had music for my car before I even had a car [laughs]; like I had a stereo system before I had my first car. Big Bear did my Chopper, Killer Kreations did my bike, and Unique Autosports did my Benz. Now that I have those cars, I have connections with people so I may not have to do my own customizations anymore. How did you learn how to work on your own cars? Me and my buddies always were doing stuff, so I’m self-taught. The very first car I ever did was my first ride, an Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme. I love all things automotive so I would like to have my own custom shop, which just might be in my future. Not really sure when I’d do it, but it’s something I wouldn’t mind trying sometime in the future. What are the top three things each of your cars need to have before you take them out on the streets? I have to change the sound system. The music has to be loud and bumping, that’s always No. 1. You have to put nice rims on it, no stock wheels. Depending on the car, I would change the exhaust and do engine modifications if it’s more of a sport-type car, too. So before “Jersey Shore,” what else were you doing besides working on your own cars? Before the show I was a local DJ, working six nights a week. I was also in the car business for 10 years. I started off washing cars and then worked my way up to used car manager. But I’ve always wanted to be a DJ and concentrate on music full time. I was DJ’ing at night and working in the car business in the daytime. Then the car business started to tank, and I decided to go to school. A dream of mine was to become a fire fighter, so I took courses to set me up for the exam. How did you get on “Jersey Shore?” The day before I was gonna take the fire fighter’s exam, I got the message on MySpace that said how they liked my look and they wanted to put me on a show. I gave them my number and got a call from a casting director in L.A., who told me they were going to send a camera crew down to film a day in my life. The camera crew came and I went about my day and six months later, I got a call saying to pack up because I was headed to Jersey for about a month. I told all the clubs that I
would be back within a month, and the show just kind of skyrocketed after that. Did you have any expectations going in? Honestly, I didn’t know what I was getting myself into. I didn’t know how I was gonna look on TV or like the people I was filming with, etc. I definitely didn’t know that the show would be a pop culture phenomenon. I mean, people are quoting stuff that I say…it’s crazy! Are those catchphrases spontaneous or thought-out phrases? They just come out [laughs]. Everyone asks me that actually. I’m just myself and that’s just who I am, coming up with little sayings is just really me being me. You’ve obviously achieved a level of success no matter how unplanned it was. Do you think it’s changed you? I started as a local DJ in Rhode Island, now I’m the local DJ everywhere. I’m DJ’ing all over the world and the show has brought that to me. But I’m still me as a person. What you see on the show is really how I am behind cameras. The show’s helped my music career, but it hasn’t changed me from being myself.
So what started your interest in music and DJ’ing? Music has always been my life even when I was a little kid. When I got my first set of DJ equipment, I just practiced like crazy until I got my first gig. After that I knew I wanted to do this for the rest of my life. I started as a hip-hop/ dance DJ. But I just like to get the club going, so I’ll pretty much spin anything that makes people gave a good time. Do you produce any of the music you spin or do you straight DJ? I produce a little bit as well. Producing is a hobby right now. I’ll be a part of anything that’s related to music since I love it so much. You were the first cast member of “Jersey Shore” to get your own spin-off show. What can fans expect? It’s the same production company as “Jersey Shore” and it will air on MTV. It will document my life as a DJ, as well as a few of my friends who I’m bringing in and just show how my life has changed from being a DJ before the show, how the show affected my life, and how my career is now. How would you describe your lifestyle now? I used to be a local DJ and now people are literally sending private jets, putting me up in expensive suites, residencies in Las Vegas and more! I mean, I’m just amazed that this is my life now. You were voted in the top 10 of DJ Times’ Top 100 DJs in America. How has that made you feel given your humble start? It’s absolutely amazing to me. This whole opportunity has been a blessing to me. It’s always been a dream to be recognized in the DJ community, so it’s really a dream come true. What’s the most memorable DJ experience thus far in your career? The most memorable experience…hmmm. I just did a major tour with Britney Spears and Nicki Minaj. To tour with artists like that was amazing. I’ve been playing Britney Spears’ music my whole life so to be billed with her was incredible. What would be your dream DJ job? I’ve always wanted to hold a residency position in Las Vegas. My goal was to be like DJ AM who was at Rain in Las Vegas, and I now hold that residency, so that’s amazing. He was a huge

Pauly D’s Mercedes S-Class AMG was done up by Will Castro from UNIQUE Autosport and features a system by JL Audio, color-matched 22-inch DONZ Brasco wheels wrapped in Pirelli P Zero Nero 265/35R22 front and 295/30R22 rear tires, a STRUT grille package and custom “Pauly D” badges.
inspiration for me, so this is something big for me at the moment. What about those that downplay your DJ skills, criticizing that all the success is only because of the show? I love when people say that because I get to prove them wrong. I’ve been DJ’ing my whole life and the show just exposed me to a greater audience. The key to life is to do what you love for a living, which is what I’m doing now. And my skills only back that up. Do you ever think you’ll get into movies or acting? I never tried out for TV, I never thought I would be on TV but now that I am I wouldn’t mind doing movies. I’m not an actor but I wouldn’t mind playing myself in a movie [laughs]. Did you have as much game with the ladies before the show? I never really had a problem in that department [laughs]. Does it matter to you that some of the other cast members like Snooki have a bigger following? When I think about other talent on the show, I never compare myself. With lots of drama on the show, you’re usually the laidback one, but how do you stay so calm? I’m always myself on the show. They take things way too seriously, so I try to take more of a comical approach. I feel that works best and that’s really just my personality. You guys just filmed Season 5, what can fans expect and how many more seasons of “Jersey 32 dubmag march 2012
Shore” will you be involved in? We were away from the country for a while, so fans will get to see us come back to the States and just have fun. I’m not originally from Jersey, but it feels like home, so you’ll see us coming back home and just enjoying being there in what we know and love. Anything else you’re working on? Dirty Couture is a music-influenced clothing line that I have out right now. I’ve got my own tanning lotion and bronzer, so you can tan with Pauly SCAN THIS CODE FOR MORE ON pauly d
D. I’m also working with G-Unit and 50 Cent on some projects, which is another dream come true. What are your goals for the future? I just want to be remembered as a talented DJ and be recognized in the music community. “Jersey Shore” was just a way to get my name out there and I’ve accomplished what I set out to do since it’s allowed me to really grow my music career. It doesn’t get any better than this [laughs]!

Killer Kreations x Pauly D
F
red Sicoli of Killer Kreations is more than a customizer, he’s an artist. Life-like murals and intricate one-off bike/car creations are his calling card and he has quickly become a household name within car enthusiast circles. But since he first and foremost passion deals with bikes, he's recently went back to his roots and created a one-of-a-kind Killer Kreations bike for energetic DJ Pauly D. How did this special bike for Pauly D come about? Fred: What happened was that somehow my wife got in contact with Ryan Labbe, he’s Pauly’s good friend and now works for him. At first, they were only going to get turntables airbrushed, but I suggested the bike. It was supposed to be a birthday present, but that fell through since he was filming “Jersey Shore” on his birthday. We then tried to unveil it at the 2011 SEMA Show, but that fell through ‘cause of conflicting schedules. So we just unveiled it at the Palms in Vegas two weeks before SEMA, which is where he has a DJ residency.
TECH SPECS:
Did Pauly know about it? Most of the stuff was between Ryan and I. Pauly had an idea of what was happening, but he didn’t know what he was getting entirely. I still had to get info from Ryan, so we sort of snuck around behind him since it was supposed to be a surprise. Originally, we were going to go with an Italian-themed bike, but he didn’t want that. We found out he wanted a DJ theme and so I picked out everything he uses and put the mural on the bike together to reflect his personal tastes. What did the bike process entail? It took at least three months to get everything together. I contacted a friend, Allen Lane from SportBikes Inc. Magazine, and he helped me get the bike through Suzuki. Once we got the bike, I was able to start getting parts for it. For the most part, everybody donated parts for the build. I took care of designing the bike, artwork and the paint. Then had my in-house mechanic, Harry Berkeley, put it all together.
Will there be any more Pauly D projects? I’m hoping to work on other stuff with him but not sure since we both have really busy schedules. But I’d definiltey like to link up sometime in the near future. This one was really fun and overall a great experience. We had a great time in Vegas and hanging with him was awesome. The unveiling was a great party, too! What else has Killer Kreations been working on? Getting ready for 2012 SEMA already and getting ready for Philly auto show. Doing new things like home shows, comic book conventions since we focus on art, we want to do different shows related to art and focus on artwork, not only just bikes and cars. I want to showcase more of our art on other mediums. We’re also hoping to do more collaborations with celebrities in the future, too. I’m actually working on a couple right now, but I can’t really talk about them just yet. I was also going to try getting into doing tattoos, but since I’m so busy right now, I might never get any sleep if I do [laughs].

his past November, UFC Velasquez vs. Dos Santos marked the first time the UFC was aired live on FOX for free. DUB was also there for the day’s festivities, hosting the Official UFC Pre-Fight Tailgate Party, which took place at the Honda Center in Anaheim, CA. The turnout was amazing given the gloomy weather, and you could feel the excitement for the fight everywhere! The lines for the afternoon autograph sessions started at 6 in the morning! Chuck Liddell and Anderson Silva had huge lines as well as Dominick Cruz, Brian Stann and Carlos Condit. The TapouT crew along with Skrape, Punkass and UFC fighter Krzysztof Soszynski were also in the mix with their personal collections. Toyo Tires had on display their custom Dodge Durango sittin’ on Savini wheels for people to check out in person and enter for a chance to win it. Fans were also treated to some free giveaways from various sponsors, inpromptu meetings with various fighters walking through the tailgate such as Mark Munoz, Nam Phan, Frank Trigg and Mike “The Joker” Guymon.

Wheel & Tire Care
Check out these two hot new products from Meguiar’s and Black Magic. They’ll make sure your new (or old) set of wheels and tires are fresh and clean all year long!
Meguiar’s
BLACK MAGIC
Meguiar’s Hot Rims All Wheel and Tire Cleaner combines both wheel and tire care into one bottle. Their exciting new product acts fast to lift and remove dirt, with debris washing away before the users’ eyes. It is designed to wash away filth with ease, leaving behind a brilliant shine that cleans both metal and rubber. The Xtreme Cling solution foam turns from white to brown as it grabs all brake dust buildup and grime. For more info check out www.meguiars.com.
The Black Magic Tire Wet Spray Gel is formulated for all types of tires, especially high performance, low profile tires, which tend to have issues with sling or possible staining or streak marks. For high performance, low profile tires, apply the Black Magic Tire Wet Spray Gel sparingly then allow to dry and to see a streak-free shine. It also works well for off-road tires, but avoid two wheel vehicles since the tires could become slippery. For more info check out www.blackmagicshine.com. march 2012 dubmag 57

ouston’s newest son, 22-year-old Lil Playy, is already well known. Lil Playy penned the infectious hook to the RIAA-certified platinum single, “My Chick Bad,” which caught the attention of Ludacris, who bid to purchase the record for use on his Battle Of The Sexes album. Lil Playy’s decision to sell the song proved to be a genius business move. Within months, Ludacris’ version, featuring Nicki Minaj, peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop chart. The song was also nominated for a Grammy in 2011. Playy is now racking up more accolades, having the honor of being the first rap artist signed by entertainment executives—the legendary Suzanne de Passe and heavyweight producer Rodney Jerkins. Impressed with Lil Playy’s talent, the pair formed a joint partnership between their companies de Passe Jones Entertainment and Darkchild Productions. His first mixtape, “TourBuzMuzik,” is a mix of quick-witted freestyle rhymes, hearty production, and infectious hooks. His name is garnering more and more attention, so be ready to hear more of Lil’ Playy in the coming year, but for now here’s a formal introduction into this up-and-coming artist! What’s your earliest music memory? Lil’ Flip’s Leprechaun album is the first album that made me start rapping. That whole album— the style of the music, plus him being from my hometown of Houston—greatly influenced me. Who were some of your musical influences growing up? Lil’ Flip, UGK, Hot Boys, Lil’ Wayne, and Kanye West. I listen to a lot of music. The whole style

of these guys’ music and the content. Listening to them rap about having a better life made me want to get up and get those things for myself. When did you know you wanted to pursue music as a career? When I was 15, I went to Atlanta, I recorded my first record called P.L.A.Y. and I just started promoting the record around the city, doing talent shows and stuff. I kept winning the talent shows, so I decided to take this music thing seriously. How did you get the name Lil’ Playy? My personality is very playful. I’m a jokester and I’m also kind of good with the ladies. How was it balancing high school and building your music buzz? I would stay up all night doing music even though I was supposed to be doing homework. My mom couldn’t get me out of the studio and it was hard because she wanted me to focus on school. Describe how the Atlanta and Houston music scenes helped to propel your music career. When I moved to Atlanta, that’s when my music career really began to take off. I didn’t have any connections within the industry in Houston, so I moved. My dad had a lot of contacts in Atlanta. I ended up doing a lot of talent shows based on his connections and I happened to perform at The Royal Peacock in the city. That’s where I met my management team, who then introduced me to Suzanne de Passe. She told me to perform, I did and she liked me. She then took me to Rodney Jerkins, who took me to Jimmy Iovine over at Interscope Records. Rodney was instrumental in setting up my Interscope deal. Rodney and I worked on some music and he ended up setting up an audition for me with Jimmy Iovine over at Interscope. I performed for Jimmy and he signed me on the spot. I’m working on my album right now and it should be out sometime during first quarter of next year. Did Suzanne de Passe give you any advice about the entertainment business? If so, what was the advice? She told me that I needed to have patience to survive in this business. Describe your first meeting with Rodney Jerkins. It was really good. In our first meeting, he put me in the booth, and we recorded four songs right off the bat. I went in not expecting too much, but as soon as he heard what I could do, he wanted to put me in the booth. How did your meeting with him affect you as an artist? I’ve definitely grown as an artist. He really showed me how to shine on all types of music. I never thought that I would record pop records or R&B records or anything like that, but he definitely expanded my horizons. When I came to him, I was strictly on Houston-style music. I’ve learned to just think outside the box and to dare to be different from him. You wrote the hook for “My Chick Bad.” How did that song come about? I was in the studio with Traxster and we were working on music. “My Chick Bad” was a song 80 dubmag march 2012
My personality is very playful. I’m a jokester and I’m also kind of good with the ladies. we worked on, and all I was able to do that day was lay the hook and then Traxster chopped and screwed it. I was originally planning to keep the song, but Ludacris heard it and wanted to buy it. So I said, “give it to him.” The fact that he used it for his album, Battle of the Sexes, was lovely, and the fact that he kept my voice on the record was a good look for me. That song was my first big record. It put me on the map. “My Chick Bad” went on to gain massive success peaking at No. 2 on Billboard and earning a Grammy nomination, how did this success make you feel as an artist/business person? I loved the success from it. I got my first ASCAP Award from that record. Now that I’m pursuing my music, I try to keep in mind when I’m writing a song that I don’t always have to keep it for myself, ’cause it might fit someone else. How has it been for you as an artist to come up and be stamped by so many respected individuals in the entertainment industry? It feels really good. All I have to do is back them up by creating the best music I possibly can and in return they back me up with their collective power. I just feel like if I fail it’s my own fault because I already have a great team in place working on my behalf. I feel like every song I do I have to make it really unique and versatile. We’re taking our time with this album because we want everything with it to be right.
You have your own multi-media company, Stunny Moneyy Entertainment. What are some of your future plans? We have a media side, where we’ll do video production for ourselves as well as other artists. Then we have a clothing and shoe line, which are in the works. We’re interested in movies, too. I would like to work with Kanye, Rihanna and Taylor Swift. I would work with anybody that’s great at what they do. Are there any projects that you’re currently featured on or are working on? I’m on the new Kelly Rowland album, Here I Am; we did a song called “Working Man.” I’m also on Twista’s latest album, that song is called “I Do.”

DJ Etronik Battling beefs
E
dgar “DJ Etronik” Bernal is a rising star in the DJ world, having represented the U.S. at the DMC World Finals in all three categories of the DJ battle competition. With more than 15 years of experience under his belt, DJ Etronik not only battles, but also likes to get the parties started, playing gigs across the nation. He’s ready to take on the New Year headon and take his career to new heights. Find out how DJ Etronik garnered DMC elite status and how he plans to conquer 2012! Where does your DJ story begin? I began DJ’ing in my garage at home in 1995, but I’ve always had big dreams of making it as a DJ. I started out by doing small house parties, high school dances and countless hours of jamming out in my garage with disco lights on and friends over, just having good times. How did you get your DJ name? I went by “DJ Edgar B.” for the longest time, and a lot of friends still call me that. When I began competing in 2003, I wanted a name that would best describe me and the style of my performance. I thought “electronic” was the best word that described my sound and my style of DJing. What made you enter competitions? I’ll never forget watching MTV in 1999 and saw how DJ Craze had won back-to-back World Championships. Since I never had the Internet in my house, I couldn’t do any research on any of these competitions and my friends had never heard of them, I was out of the loop. It wasn’t until 2003 when I saw the DMC VHS for the 1999 DMC World Finals for sale. I already knew the outcome and wanted to see how DJ Craze first started, so I got the 1998 US Finals video and was blown away. I had no idea what could be done on turntables. From there, I became a DMC nerd. When I saw that the 2003 DMC L.A. Regionals were gonna happen at the Century Club in West L.A., I entered and the rest is just history from there. What did it feel like to be the first-ever American DJ to rep for the U.S. at the DMC World Finals in all three categories? It didn’t really hit me until I was on the plane heading to the U.K. for the 2010 World Finals. I was extremely honored, and for the first time, proud of myself. I pride myself on being humble, so you’ll never see me brag about anything, but knowing that I did something in a competition that I respected so much first was very exciting for me as a DJ. The fist category I won in 2006 84 dubmag march 2012
www.pioneerdjusa.com
was the Supremacy Competition, which is a head-to-head bracket-style battle where only one DJ is left standing. The second was the Teams Competition, where I was in the World Final with Lodus as the “Angry Ex’s.” Then in 2010, I won the Grand Finale of the three, the “Showcase Category,” where each DJ gets six minutes to showcase all their best techniques. How did you go about perfecting your DJ skills? Just hours and hours of practice. I would practice when I’d wake up, practice when I got home from work, and right before I would go to bed. When I would learn something new, or do something cool, I would master that and learn how to do it better and faster. For me, it was about making routines that make sense. I would always just go for the noise, crazy sounds and flashy tricks because I knew other DJs couldn’t do it like me, but I lacked soul and feeling, though. At this point, I am still barely finding a balance that is still crazy, but still making sense. What type of music do you primarily play? I mainly play high-energy electro, club hits and hip-hop. I would like to be considered as a “pro DJ,” because I know I can play anywhere. How is DJ’ing competitively different from DJ’ing a club or a party? Different worlds! Clubs and parties are so much fun; you play popular or high-energy music and people go nuts. You can add your own style in, whether it is your look or style of play, and people either love or hate you. Competing, you can wear your pajamas, not shave and stink, but if you have the best sound and technique, you could very well win a DJ championship. How long do you plan to compete for? I plan on going until I run out of ideas! Honestly, creating routines with the music I love and getting a crowd reaction to something I do has been very
addicting to me. I cannot let go now. You can plan on seeing me for at least a few more years. What separates you from other DJs? I would say my heart and love for music and what I can do with it. It has gotten to the point where I no longer hear music, but I feel and see the music. I see ways that I can manipulate the sounds I hear and the different ways I can make them sound. What equipment do you play on for both competition and live sets? It is mainly Technics 1200s or Pioneer CDJs. I am very comfortable on either. Any words of advice to those who want to learn how to DJ and compete? Never give up, and always believe in yourself. I can tell you that, it has been a very tough journey for me, I have been put down many times, and felt like quitting even. I believed in myself though, I saw a future, no matter what I heard. Don’t aim to be good at one thing, but aim to be great at everything! What other DJ-related plans do you have? What else would you like to accomplish? For the near future, I would like to travel more places and do more gigs. I am also working on an album that I plan to release in the Summer/Fall of 2012. I plan on entering more DJ competitions in 2012, too. So in a nutshell, I plan to be busy in 2012…more than I ever have been!

Self-Made Ink Slinger photos: vikter fuentez

ometimes it takes a while until you find out what you’re supposed to do in life. Take for example tattoo artist and owner of Self Made Tattoo Studio Mikee Hernandez, who underwent two different career paths before discovering his true calling as a body artist. But now that’s he’s completely submerged in his craft, Hernandez lives and breathes all things related to the world of tattooing, as he leaves his artistic mark on countless bodies. Take a look into the life of a self-made tattoo artist and his journey within the ink world. How did you become a professional tattoo artist? A good friend of mine, Chente Rios—who’s a very famous artist right now—pushed me to do tattoos. I met him through a friend at a tattoo shop in East L.A. more than 10 years ago and we just hit it off. I didn’t want to do them at first since I started off in the Navy and was a firefighter for a while. I didn’t have any confidence in my ability to tattoo at the time. I knew I could draw, especially people’s faces, which is what I specialize in now, but I didn’t think it was good enough. It’s hard to explain, but once I tried tattooing I just loved it. I then decided to do an apprenticeship with Chente and that’s how it all started. I owe it all to him. I was doing it just for fun. I would draw patterns for him and then he would tattoo it on his clients. My whole journey started with someone just believing in me and teaching me the art. I’ve been doing it for the last six years now. I also worked at Ink Slingers in Alhambra and also Ghost Town in Pico Rivera where Rich Martinez, another one of my mentors worked. Did you grow up with an artistic background then? My father, he’s always been an artist. He would draw cartoons for us. My love for art is inherited, so I’ve drawn my whole life. I went to art school, but it wasn’t my thing. My mentor, Chente, really pushed me to try tattooing. and once I started tattooing, I fell in love with it. I paint as well and like to use a lot of charcoal. But tattooing is a whole different thing than just drawing for me. I get lost in it! I primarily do freehand tattoos. What would you say has been your best tattoo to date? I have pieces that are my favorite, but it changes all the time. I’ll do a new tattoo and that’ll become my current favorite, but I do have a favorite customer, Frank. He’s not only my favorite customer, but also my jeweler and I’m currently finishing his whole back right now. march 2012 dubmag 87
premium goods fashion x music x life What has been your hardest piece? The technique as a whole is hard; it’s something you really have to practice and learn. Every piece is a test and it forces you to push yourself. I’m always asking myself, “How I can do it better.” Portraits are extremely hard because you have to capture that person’s expression and be able to transfer that image onto a person’s body. Besides being a tattoo artist, you own shop, Self Made Tattoo Studio in Santa Fe Springs, CA. What’s the biggest difference between being a shop owner and a tattoo artist? I never thought I would own my own shop. Since I built everything myself, make my own ink and expanded the shop on my own, I decided to call the shop “Self Made.” The business aspect of it can be very difficult, but it’s definitely a big difference. Because I’m an artist owning a shop it makes it a little easier for me to relate to my co-workers. I’m very hands-on in terms of my management style. I decorated the shop myself. I wanted to be in every aspect of my shop. I run it and I own it. Besides the Santa Fe Springs shop, I also own one in Texas with the same name. Paul Wall is my business partner for the shop in Houston. How did that business relationship form? Skinhead Rob and Travis Barker introduced me to Paul Wall, and I started doing tattoos for him. He noticed that I was coming down to Houston a lot and he suggested that I just build a shop down there. So far, we’ve just been doing celebrity clients, but soon the shop will be open to the public. How is the shop in Houston going to be different from your shop in Los Angeles? It’s definitely a relaxed environment like the one in L.A. Sometimes people are nervous when they come in, so I try to make it a relaxing vibe. I’m also hoping that we’re going to be able to do a reality show with the shop in Houston. Overall, what makes both tattoo shops different from others? Well, my tattoo shops looks more like a hang out spot. When you come, you’re coming to hang out and decide what you want. We don’t have patterns here, so everything is created when you come in. In other shops, you can pick pattern No. 12 and they’ll
88 dubmag march 2012
tattoo that. We don’t do that at my shop. You’ve tattooed Paul Wall and Slim Thug, but what other notable celebrities have you tattooed? Paul Wall would be the most inspiring because we both understand that it takes grind to get where you’re trying to go. I hope to achieve what he has. I’ve tattooed Wilson Chandler from the Denver Nuggets, Jordan Hill from the Houston Rockets, Chris Ward a big artist and producer, and he’s been an inspiration as well. What are your tattoo influences? Texas hip-hop and just hip-hop in general. I just like they’re style. When I blend the style of L.A. with Houston’s style, it’s just a merging of the cultures. When I’m tattooing I love listening to hip-hop music so it all just works together. You have an interesting tattoo on your eyelid of a dollar sign. Does it mean anything? It’s a symbol within the tattoo industry. It’s an
insider thing, but it basically means you’ve done well. Once you make $100,000 tattooing you get a dollar sign on your eyelid. A couple of us have it, including Chente Rios. How has tattoo culture changed throughout the years? It’s changed dramatically. There have always been artists who do it full time, but now the art has just evolved. You can make more life-like work with portraits now. The ink, the machines…I mean it’s a full-on career now and that’s different. Do you think car culture is linked to tattoo culture? I think they go hand-in-hand. Building a car and tricking it out is an art form in itself. Most people who have really nice cars usually have really nice tattoos. What kind of cars do you have in your garage? I’m big on cars. I have a ’63 Nova Convertible, a ’49 Chevy Fleetline, BMW X3 M Series, 7-Series
RhinoLinings6055DUB0711:Layout 1
BUMPER TO BUMPER
PROTECTION Rocks, sand, mud... Bring it on! Rhino Linings provides the highest level of corrosion, impact and abrasion resistance for BMW and a couple of bikes. I’m also big on Harleys. I completely restored my Nova myself. I still have work to do on it and it runs great. I’m an artist so I’m always trying to perfect it. I’ve also been looking at getting a Maserati or a Bentley. Any other projects you’re working on? I do a lot of tattoo conventions to get my name out there in the industry more. I have a clothing company called Diamonds and Guns and, slowly but surely, we’re building that up. Trying to balance everything is a little stressful. I’m opening up a bar in California, too. It’ll be in the same area as my shop. What kind of bar are you planning on making it? It’ll have a different name than the tattoo shop, but the bar will feel like the tattoo shop, with maybe some designs and car parts in it. It’s gonna be a cool spot to just chill at. Hopefully, it’ll be open this summer. I’m also really focused on opening the second shop in Houston right now,
though. Hopefully, there’s a TV show after that. So, what kind of l tattoo legacy would you like to leave behind? I would like to be recognized as an icon, as someone who made it. I want to represent those who dedicate themselves to the art and the craft of tattooing. *Mikee would like to give a special shout out to his newest member of the Self Made Tattoo Studio team, “Yogee,” as well as thank World Wide Tattoo for hooking them up with supplies.

onsidered to be the Mexican equivalent of hip-hop’s Lil Wayne, Larry Hernandez creates compelling “street music” that’s sung rather than rapped, but still possessing the same themes of life and the hustle of the street. “Things in my music is as real as it gets,” Larry says. “It’s either happened to me, somebody I know or is something I read or heard about, so I’m not making any of it up. People may criticize me for the topics of my music, but I’m not praising any of it. I’m like the source of news source for the streets.” Roll up to any car show on the West Coast and you’ll most likely hear a song of Larry Hernandez’s blasting from the majority of
customized rides. As the tunes of choice for many of the car clubs, the Mexican regional singer has been crowned the “The King of Corridos,” thanks to his raw and gritty song themes that depict what’s happening on the streets of Mexico and many South Western states like New Mexico, Arizona, Texas and California. And like his street-oriented mentality, Larry not only sings about the ways of the street, but lives it with his iced-out watches and pendants that are reminiscent of the baller’s lifestyle. But he’s not just about living it up, he’s also trying to make a change within the Mexican culture to prove that anybody can live their dreams if they work hard enough, which Larry is no stranger march 2012 dubmag 93
The 2008 flat red Jeep Cherokee SRT8 was originally a four-door vehicle, but J&C’s Customs chopped it down to two doors and gave it a widebody rear. As a work in progress, JC Customs will be adding a supercharger in the near future.
Rosalino “Chalino” Sanchez, who was one of the first corrido singers in the ’80s. “I’m honored to be considered that, but I grew up listening to ‘Chalino’ and became interested in the music because of him. He’ll always be the king in my eyes.” Corridos may be what provided Larry’s overnight success, but the singer doesn’t want to restrict his career to just that one genre of Mexican music. Instead, he’d like to diversify his music and one day release an album that would fuse together all the familiar Mexican music genres like norteñas, banda, mariachi and baladas romanticas, with some reggaeton and hip-hop thrown in. to. In just four years of releasing his 2009 debut effort, 16 Narco Corridos album, Larry has risen to stardom within the Mexican music genre and continues to sell out arenas and concerts everywhere he goes. Born in Los Angeles, he grew up in Culiacan, Sinaloa, Mexico after his family moved there when he was four, where he grew up listening to regional tunes. Sparked with a passion for music at a very young age, Larry learned to play several instruments, including the accordion, and began his musical career in a group called Los Amables del Norte. However, he rose to mainstream success with his debut album, which was a smash hit with fans and cemented his reigning title. “I think the fans really like 16 Narco Corridos because it was a spontaneous production,” he describes. “I wrote the majority of the content on the album and went into the studio and finished it in one day. You can feel that on the album.” As far as being “The King of Corridos,” Larry isn’t so sure. According to him, that title belongs to 94 dubmag march 2012

“That’s one of my top goals in my career,” Larry confesses. “I’d want that album to also feature some huge collaborations from artists who are big in their respective genres.” Another huge collaborations for him would be to do a romantic ballad with the likes of Luis Miguel. “I love listening to his music in the car because it’s really soft and tranquil. I may be known for corridos, but I love listening to baladas romanticas. But I also love bumping some hip-hop in the car, like Lil Wayne or Snoop.” Just like his hip-hop equivalent Lil Wayne, Larry has an appreciation for fine rides, stating his dream ride would be a “Bugatti just like Lil Wayne’s.” In the midst of growing his car collection to mimic that of hip-hop greats, Larry doesn’t necessarily need a fleet of all-new vehicles. Instead, the highly illustrious Mexican singer is
quite content with an assorted mix of vehicles— some dating from the ’90s and others more recent. As long as he feels comfortable in them and they have at least one unique feature to make his ride different from others, then he’s more than happy. “You can’t really pinpoint Larry’s style when it comes to cars,” says Chris Castellanos from J&C’s Customs, who worked on all of his rides. “He’ll drive anything as long as he likes it.” Larry first went to J&C’s Customs to fix his 2003 BMW 745 after it was damaged in a sandstorm in Arizona (where Larry has one of his many homes). When Chris suggested dressing it up a bit, Larry jumped at the chance and gave Chris and his crew free reign on the Bimmer. “We added a Candy Apple Red paint scheme from House of Kolor, a full body kit from AC Schnitzer, 22-inch Asanti wheels and custom interior and exterior “Larry Hernandez” logos,” Chris describes. “After he saw the finished product, now he comes in and just asks for something that’s different
The 1998 Jaguar holds special meaning for Larry and is a car he’ll probably never get rid of. But he’s given it a few upgrades, including switching the exterior paint from silver to white, added a custom interior and a set of 20-inch custom wheels.

Larry’s 2003 BMW 745 was his first big purchase when he made it big, as well as the first ride customized by J&C’s Customs. and leaves the rest up to me.” And Chris hasn’t steered Larry wrong. For both of Larry’s 2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT-8s (one was purchased after a night of partying in Mexico), he provided some eye-catching enhancements. One was laced up with an intimidating matte-black color scheme and given even more power through the addition of a twin turbo system. The other was painted in a flat red and converted to a two-door widebody and will feature a supercharger upgrade in the near feature. Both sport his custom logos on the exterior and interior.
The rest of Larry’s collection includes a 2012 Mercedes-Benz CLS, 1988 Jaguar XJ, 2008 Ford Lobo Harley Davidson (the Mexican equivalent to a F-150), 2007 Mini Cooper and a 2008 Range Rover Sport Supercharged. With Larry’s cars, each hold a special memory or meaning to the singer, a trait he likes all his cars to have. “The Jaguar holds a lot of memories of a friend who had passed away,” Larry details. “We had a lot of good times in that car, and I will probably never get rid of it. The BMW is also special to me because it was the first car I bought for myself when I started to become successful as a singer.”

His most recent purchase, the 2012 MercedesBenz CLS was actually bought out of spite, after he was treated pretty unfairly at a dealership. “I was just looking one day at a local dealership out on the West Side of L.A. and because I was dressed pretty casually (in sweats and a tee), they thought I couldn’t afford to buy such a car. They kept on telling me how expensive it would be for me, so I left to the bank to withdraw cash to buy the car. But someone there knew who I was and told the sales guys, so when I came back to buy the car, they were kissing my ass. I bought it just to prove to them that a Mexican like me can afford such luxury.” The Benz has actually become a favorite of his, which he drives whenever he’s in town. But his

favorite ride is actually a plane, Larry jokes, because his demanding tour schedule always has him away from his cars. Currently finishing up his next album due out in March, Larry looks forward to a fruitful 2012. Not only is he living a dream he never thought he’d accomplish (which has afforded him the opportunity to help his community, something he’s very proud of), but also obtain a collection of cars that he never thought imaginable. “This year I’m looking to get a Porsche Panamera and have Chris add some swag to it and, hopefully one day, be able to obtain that Bugatti. Now that’s the ride of my dreams!”

Le Monstre is capable of pushing out 1,001 hp thanks to its 427 CID engine with 3.6L supercharger system.

hen it came time for prominent Cadillac tuner D3 to build a vehicle that showcased all of its performance technology coupled with styling upgrades, they built a monster…literally! With 1,001 horsepower, it’s a beast on and off the track. Dubbed “Le Monstre” after the nickname that was coined by the French media in 1950 to describe a 1950 Cadillac Coupe Series 61 that raced in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, D3’s version is a tribute to an era when the automaker was heavily involved in racing. “Le Monstre is an accumulation of all the technology we’ve been putting together for the cars since the inception of Cadillac’s V program,” says, Timothy Pak, D3’s Director of Business Development. “We wanted to showcase all the upper-shelf products—in terms of thermal efficiency, suspension/chassis, aero and powertrain—and push them to the limit and maximize what we could get out of the car. What resulted was Le Monstre —this big machine that’s able to handle the track and look as sharp as an arrow.” The one-of-a-kind 2012 CTS-V Coupe pounds out such jaw-dropping
numbers thanks to a 427 CID engine with the D3 Stage 3 ULTRACHARGER 3.6L system that also cranks out 1,000 lb.-ft. of torque. The exterior is covered by a sinister stain-black wrap by Wraptivo and a custom widebody designed by D3 to match the body lines of the stock CTS-V Coupe. They collaborated with the widbody experts at TS Designs to do the fabrication. The fit and finish resulted in a factory widebody look with the ability to accomodate a wide and grippy set of 345/25R20 Toyo Tires T1Rs while the front runners were fitted with 275/30R20s all wrapped around Rennen multi-piece wheels. It also features D3’s competition and track-ready suspension and upgraded chassis to maximize performance on the track while still giving it a street credible stance. Street legal and racetrack ready, Le Monstre is visually and audibly an intimidating beast. “It’s a dark and ominous, street-killing machine that would cost between $105K-$115K as is right now,” Pak details. “That’s essentially less than $200K for a supercar, which isn’t something you can get just anywhere. From styling to performance and functionality, Le Monstre has everything. You can literally flog it like a red-headed stepchild on the march 2012 dubmag 105
track and then drive to work the next day without any problems.” It has been scheduled for a minimum of 46 race days and numerous other track-related events, but Le Monstre is still undergoing some other modifications after it was unveiled in the Toyo Tires booth at the 2011 SEMA Show. “We’ve partnered up with Pioneer to upgrade its audio system and will be caging the car,” he says. “But instead of totally gutting out all the factory equipment like we normally do when caging our cars, we’re going to keep it as stock as possible, with its leather seats and stuff, and then build the roll cage around it. That way it features everything it needs to hit the track like a fire extinguisher, roll cage and harnesses, while still keeping its comfortable and stylish interior.” D3 has already been getting hundreds of inquiring calls on the build with one currently in the shop ready to transform into Le Monstre for a customer. “We’re definitely going to get more requests for our Le Monstre this year as we finish up the last upgrades and start hitting the races!”

Grammy Awardwinning Producer by Day, Race Car Driver by Night words: DeAnne DeLuna photos: roman racela
L
ike most superheroes, Jim Jonsin lives a double life. While he doesn’t posses any superpowers that separate superheroes from their ordinary personas, Jonsin does live two very different, yet exciting, lives. His 9-5 gig as a top-notch, heavy-hitter music producer, executive, songwriter and label owner, boasts a list of collaborations that resemble a Billboard chart. He’s worked with practically everybody in the industry, including Beyonce, Lil Wayne, Kanye, Eminem, T.I., and Yelawolf, just to name a few. He’s also credited for discovering and signing B.O.B and is currently in the studio working on his next album. Quite an impressive and envious career, the Grammy-award winning producer also doubles as a racecar driver and owns his own team, Rebel Rock Racing, which has included the likes of Bucky Lasek (pro skateboarder) as a racer when the entity was first conceived and is supported by ambassadors like Pitbull, Yelawolf and Kyle Loza and sponsored by Beats by Dre and Oakley. So how did a prominent music entity like Jonsin (who is already beyond successful by many people’s standards) get into motorsports, you may be thinking? Well, it’s quite simple and all boils down to one thing: PASSION.
“In the music business it’s so busy and being in the car is my break from the business.”
Growing up with a dad and uncle who were both mechanics, Jonsin was always around some type of auto-related scene, drag racing in particular. “I was always around the track when I was younger,” he vividly recalls. “I’ve been a fan of NASCAR and Gran Prix racing for a while now and can actually do a bit of body and mechanic work myself. I was introduced to the track last year and I just loved it. My friend Bucky [Lasek] and I started going to races together and began working on getting my race license and that’s how I began on this journey of building a race team and drivers and getting out the brand.” Jonsin has been putting together the team since December 2010 that specialize in road races, which has “in-field turns, sharp turns and is more than just going in circles or an oval,” he adds. “What I like about racing is that you’re looking at the cars that you can buy at the dealership,” Jonsin describes. “With NASCAR or Indy Car, all march 2012 dubmag 113

the cars in the race look the same. In a road race, I may run a Porsche, you may run a Corvette, and someone else will bring their own car. You bring what you have and just race, which is what I enjoy most about the motorsport.” For 2012, Jonsin wants to take Rebel Rock Racing to the big leagues and make it to the pros, with about 10-12 weekend races scheduled for the year. Described as a “gentleman driver,” Jonsin wants to brand his racing entity as something “new, fresh, young and edgy,” which is all something he looks for in new drivers for the team, other than character, which is key. “I like down to earth real people. It’s very important to have a great personality. There are plenty of fast drivers out there but that doesn’t interest me really. They need to have a personal brand that makes you look at them before they even get into a car.” Currently a fierce competitor in the driver’s seat, Jonsin’s favorite aspect of his newfound career is when he’s competing in races. “When I’m in that car, all I’m thinking about is that next turn on the track. It clears your mind and focuses you to think only of what’s immediately ahead of you. In the music business it’s so busy and being in the car is my break from the business.” But like with all good comes some bad, and for Jonsin’s situation,
114 dubmag march 2012
he finds that financing his team can be a bit of a challenge, given how expensive it is to start out in the racing world. While he may be behind the wheel now, Jonsin looks to transition to being more of the man behind the team, hitting the track every now and then. “My focus is going to be on building the Rebel Rock brand and getting faster drivers in the seat.” Thanks to his training in the music business, Jonsin is well prepared to tackle the racing world to make Rebel Rock a highly notable entity. Although he’s fairly new to it all, he’s already experienced enough to know that it’s just as cutthroat as the music industry.
With his eyes currently focused on racing, Jonsin hasn’t entirely forgot about his day job. Starting out might have taken a toll on his already tight schedule (he studied and took driving lessons on the weekends while working on “American Idol” Season 10 last year), but he’s learned how to maintain a healthy balance between the two. “I decided two years ago with the guys in the studio to take weekends off. We each needed our space away from working on music, so that we didn’t force the creative process. I wanted to spend more time with my wife and kids and get that together. Now I’ve learned to adjust my time accordingly and fit in weekends with racing,

trusted me. My ability to network is 70% of my success. Working with artists, producers, and writers is like building new friendships. What was that one song that created your notoriety? It was “Let’s Go” by Trick Daddy ft. Twista and Lil’ Jon. But people didn’t know I did the song. Do you have a preference for the kind of music you like to create? I’m really into hip-hop, pop, and rock. I’m all over the place. What are some of your top collaborations? The Lil’ Wayne and Kelly Rowland record, “Motivation.” The “Let’s Go” track with Lil’ Jon, Trick Daddy, and Twista. I collaborated with a guy named Static Major called “Lollipop” for Lil’ Wayne so that was big. When it comes to working with new artists, what do you look for? It’s all about character. I like to find good artists who are teachable. You have to be a musician, a writer, and bring something to the table. I like to work with real artists.
whether it’s practicing or actual events.” So what type of racecars would a driver like Jonsin love to have? “I’d love to get one of the Cadillac LMP cars or maybe even a Formula 1 car or NASCAR racecar. I might even want an RSR Flying Lizard!” For his personal garage wish list, he’d like to add a Ferrari Enzo, ’54 Ford truck and an old-school VW bus. Right now, he owns: a ’56 Bel Air, ’67 Mustang, two Porsches (GT3 Cup and X Pony Challenge Carrera that are both racecars), BMW 650i Cabriolet and a truck that are all housed at my home in Florida. “I like cars, period. I race the Porsches, but I’ve been looking at the Lotus Evora. But to be honest, I’m a racecar driver so I’ll drive a golf cart back and forth to work as long as it has air conditioning. I don’t really mind what kind of car I drive for daily use but for racing that’s something different. Then I need something fast, really fast!”
As the only man in the music industry who owns a racing team, Jonsin and his Rebel Rock Racing will be starting off the new year on the track as they compete in the 2012 GRAND-AM Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge competition. “We’re looking to run two cars – and possibly a third – for the season, and can’t wait to get started,” Jonsin said. “We were very happy with our first official GRAND-AM test at Daytona. We learned a lot about our new Porsche, and look forward to taking part in the 2012 competition.” Here’s a quick Q&A on Jim’s music career! What’s the biggest thing you’ve learned about the music industry? Your character and your ability to network is a big deal. I might make good music, but if I don’t make people want to work with me, then it doesn’t matter. I got my foot in the door and networked my way to work with people that
Is that what separates Rebel Rock from other labels? Longevity and realness. People from Rebel Rock are real. Our artists are the real deal on and off the court. The music industry has changed so much over the last 10 years in terms of genre identifying, what do you think of the current state of the music industry and what is your place within it? I think music is going into all different directions. People like Wiz Khalifa, Yelawolf, Mac Miller, they’re using the internet and touring to get their music out there. Finding a talent like them is another part of my job. I’m not just someone who makes music. What would you like your musical legacy to be? I want to find a way to have a respected record label, sort of like what Jimmy Iovine was able to create for himself. Is there anything you’re working on besides racing and music? Racing, music, and raising my children. That’s pretty much it. I also have a production company and publishing company where I’ve signed up-andcoming producers and writers. We have a couple of people that are going to be on top real soon. What artist would you love to work with? Jay-Z. I just love Jay-Z, I love his music and what he’s all about. I would just love to get in a room with him and create music. Jay-Z is just a smart businessman that has taken his career to the top. I got the opportunity to work with LL Cool J and he was really cool.

he annual SEMA Show in Las Vegas is the Mecca of the automotive aftermarket, the laboratory for future innovation and the springboard for new automotive trends. Every year, thousands of people converge in Las Vegas to check out the thousands of custom vehicles and new product debuts that flood the halls and grounds of the Las Vegas Convention Center. This year the outside exhibitor areas were as popular as the displays inside of the convention center due to the great weather (except the last day) and the high level of outdoor exhibits for show goers to visit. DUB Show Tour Sponsors Monster Energy, Ford, Pirelli, Sony, UFC, Mobil 1, Kinetik, and NBA 2K12 brought out the heat with their
mobile interactive displays and custom vehicles. DUB Show LIVE! also featured packed displays from 2Crave, Asanti and Lexani Wheels, Rennen Wheels, Forgiato, Galpin Auto Sports, Kelderman, MHT Luxury Alloys, Rhino Linings, Oracle Lights, Jonari, Pioneer, and the debut of DUB Garage in collaboration with American Tire Distributors. The centerpiece of our DUB Show LIVE! display was the Luxury4Play X Platinum Motorsports matte white Bugatti Veyron, which was also the talk of SEMA. Along with it, Platinum Motorsport also brought a sinister collection of their perfectly matte painted rides, which included a Rolls-Royce Ghost, Ferrari 430, Porsche TechArt Magnum and MB ASMA G55 all totaling over $3
million! Forgiato brought out their display rig that housed their new wheel offerings, as well as Lexani and Asanti with their luxury line of wheels, accessories and bespoke executive vehicles.
Jackson’s newly customized Muscle Pharm green Lamborghini Murciélago and custom Monster Energy Dodge Charger on Savini Wheels to make all the gearheads feel at home at the Monster Energy Zone.
World Famous Galpin Auto Sports also showcased one of their rigs and was yet another highlight of the show with their collection of custom and exotic G.A.S created vehicles. Rhino Linings showed off their huge “Rhino Lined” International MXT, which had people touching the finish whenever they had a chance.
TS Designs invaded SEMA with more than a dozen of their latest “widebody” creations at DUB Show LIVE! and throughout the entire convention center. Pioneer kept the mood upbeat and provided live DJ’ing with their Scion tC all week for everyone to enjoy.
The always-popular Monster Energy Zone with the Monster Energy girls and DUB Edition Monster Energy drink caused huge lines throughout the week! On display were Rampage
One of the things that make the final stop of the DUB Show Tour in Las Vegas so unique is that it brings vehicles from all over the country all together in one place. Some of the vehicles that made the long trek included MMA fighter Josh Barnnet’s Dodge Challenger and customized rides from Cincinnati’s Spade Kreations, Philly’s Killer Kreations, Miami’s Bowtie South, KAO Autostyling from Las Vegas, LA’s specialty car craft and several chapters of Swift and Nokturnal were in attendance. Technique CC’s Joey Hernandez and Albert and Mario from Elite CC represented Cali lowriding with their top-level Lowriders. The show also encompasses custom vehicles from all genres—from Lowriders, imports and exotics to muscle cars, bikes and big lifted trucks. DUB Show LIVE! had something for everyone.

2011 DUB EXPO @ VANITY
T
he most anticipated party of SEMA Show week (like every year) was the 2011 Monster Energy DUB Expo Presented by Kinetik and Powered by Pirelli with the DUB Awards Presented by Mobil 1. Held at the posh Vanity Nightclub inside the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino on November 2nd and hosted by comedian, actor and DUB Magazine cover star, Kevin Hart, the party more than lived up to all the hype! Bottles were popping, people were dancing and the music was thumping, as the place was filled to capacity for the night’s festivities. Big Snoop Dogg headlined and capped off the party, busting out a few of his greatest hits that had the entire club fired up! It was one of our best parties ever and will surely be talked about for years to come!
