F
rench poet Paul Valery once said, “The best way to make your dreams come true is to wake up.” For Issue 77, you’ll get to know people who didn’t sit and wait for things to happen. All have worked hard to achieve the success they now enjoy and continue to push forward as they reach new goals. “Jersey Shore’s” Ronnie Oritz is now officially an Angeleno, and he’s quickly adapting to the West Coast lifestyle. As he shows Hollywood that he’s ready to be a serious actor, Ronnie still hasn’t lost his East Coast core. And because L.A. is a driving city, we took him to Roadstarr Motorsports to test drive an Audi R8, which he says might be his next ride. Anyone who takes a glance at moto-megastar Ryan Villopoto’s career would assume that he’s just a lucky dude. But he’d be the first to tell you that luck has little to do with his success. In this issue, he shares with us that the secret to winning is a combination of rigorous off-season training, a high level of consistency, and a perfectionist’s work ethic. Everyone loves an underdog and when you dig in Donald Penn’s story, we’re sure you’ll be rooting for this six-year NFL veteran and philanthropist. Unlike many professional football players, Penn didn’t start picking up the pigskin until high school and even went undrafted after college. Against these odds, he’s flourished as one of the best offensive tackles in the sport and was named as a 2011 Pro Bowler. “It’s Hard Out Here For A Pimp” doesn’t quite apply anymore when you see Memphis natives Juicy J’s and DJ Paul’s fleet of luxurious and exotic whips. The Academy Award-winning duo, more famously known as Three 6 Mafia, provided an inside scoop on what’s brewing in their kitchen: a new album, Laws of Power, an exclusive BBQ sauce deal for DJ Paul and an A&R gig for Juicy J at Wiz Khalifa’s new label, Taylor Gang. Many of us have wondered if Luxury4Play (L4P for short) was a car club, an online forum, a business, an automotive cult with the 4 finger handshake or some kind of billionaire boy’s club. No one really knew. We had a friendly interrogation with one of its founders, Ramin Arami, who shed some light on this mysterious L4P craze. We learned that L4P is neither a car club or cult, but rather a virtual community of automotive and luxury enthusiasts. But rich or poor, L4P members have one thing in common: love for fast exotic machines. (We love exotics, too, which is why we’ve added a new section called “Exotics Exposed.”) Dive in and enjoy another issue.

READER FEEDBACK
YEAAAH BUDDY!
LE MONSTRE
After checking out Pauly D’s interview in Issue 76, I have come to the conclusion that he’s not that big of a douche bag and is actually a credible music persona. Compared to Mike “The Situation,” who you guys featured in Issue 75, Pauly totally deserves his success, while I’m still not so sure about Mike. I’m still wondering how in the hell he has a Lambo, Ferrari and Bentley! He’s a tool! That’s a pretty sick bike that Killer Kreations hooked up Pauly with, though.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen a Cadillac look that intense before I saw D3’s widebody Cadillac CTS-V “Le Monstre” in your last issue. When I think of Cadillacs, I picture an old man’s car, but there’s nothing old about “Le Monstre!” In fact, it’s a ride I’d like to have in my own garage one day. It’s not as expensive to build as it looks. But I’m sure if I did buy one, I’d have speeding tickets left and right with all that horsepower. That’s one beast of a machine if I’d ever seen one!
Taylor P. Via email
Phil R.
It’s funny you bring up Mike’s car collection ’cause we get asked that question time and time again…lol. If you read the article, you’d know that “The Situation” has a full-blown business going on, which is probably how he generates all his cash to afford such an enviable garage. But yeah, Pauly D isn’t a douche bag at
all! He’s actually hilarious with all his various catch phrases and has a great personality…not to mention he’s a dope DJ (we got to check him out during his set at Club Rain after the shoot). And his custom Killer Kreations bike definitely flaunts some impressive murals that look even better up close!
THE MEXICAN LIL WAYNE
It’s about time you guys recognized the music of car culture for us Mexicans by putting Larry Hernandez on the cover. Man, that’s all you hear at car shows in Cali as we set up. Who needs hip-hop when you can bump Larry’s corridos! Seriously, he should perform at one of your L.A. shows along with some of the rappers that usually headline your shows! Javier G. Whittier, CA
18 DUBMAG APRIL 2012
Yeah, we’ve heard Larry Hernandez’s music being bumped at the various DUB shows, Javier, which is why we put him on the cover. We realized how big he is in the various car communities out here on the West Coast and decided it was time to tell his story and show off his various rides. We’re not that much into corridos, but after listening to a few jams from Larry, we can understand why he’s considered to be “The King of Corridos.” You’ll get a chance to see him and his car collection at one of our shows sooner than you expect!
ride that will make the hairs on your arm stand straight. Cadillac has definitely stepped up their game in terms of styling rides that appeal to the younger generation, and D3 took one of their best models and created a monster…literally!
You’re absolutely right, Phil, about how D3’s Cadillac CTS-V is “beast of mean machine!” Just standing next to it made you feel as if you were next to a ferocious monster with its menacing look and its allblack paint scheme. We were lucky to test it out on the track and let’s just say, 1,000 hp provides a serious
SIN CITY X SEMA
I hate the fact that SEMA is closed to the public, especially when it’s rubbed in my face every year when you guys show your recap. All those fine rides and even finer ladies…and not to mention all the parties I hear about from friends in the industry. Looks like good times all around! George D. all about just the cars, performance parts, girls and parties. Lots of business happens there, so if you’re not in the know, it wouldn’t be that much fun for any outsider. But we have to admit, it’s a time of the year that many of us look forward to. It combines all of our interests and throws them all together in what has to be one of the best cities in the world…VEGAS! We’re glad you like our recaps each year, though, ’cause it wouldn’t be fair to partake in all that fun and not share it with our readers.

SONY X MARTINO AUTO CONCEPTS’ DOUBLE DUTY ESCALADE EXT PHOTOS: ROMAN RACELA

erek Pasch, president of Martino Auto Concepts isn’t coy about his size. As a man large in stature, trucks afford him both the room and comfort needed to accomodate his needs, as well as the capability to tow his arsenal of toys that includes several motorcycles, dirt bikes and ATVs. When it came time to upgrade his garage, he sought an everyday luxury ride that could endure double duty on the weekends to haul his aforementioned toys. The 2006 Escalade EXT was the perfect fit. Already a sexy beast from the dealership, Pasch wasn’t exactly satisfied with having just any Escalade EXT and was on a mission to create a “game changer.” To build his game changing vehicle, Pasch took some drastic measures and completely redesigned the truck to where it requires a second look (maybe even a third) to fully comprehend that it’s an Escalade EXT. He changed the entire front fascia by adding a 2011 Escalade Front End Conversion, which he designed himself using sheet metal and grafting it onto the truck for a factory look. A STRUT Grille package, some suicide doors and a complete Lamboghini Reventón Matte Grey paint job were also added. Pasch also used a custom-built AccuAir E-Level Air Ride suspension to slam it to the ground where it barely hovers over asphalt. But the most radical modification is the 6-inch chop-top roof, which has totally changed the look of the EXT. “My partner Joe Lapadula and I really wanted to make a statement with this build and do something that no one else had done,” Pasch reveals. “With the exception of the mini-truck scene, there's no one out there chopping modern

day vehicles. Once we cut the roof off of the EXT, we knew why! Literally every single geometric angle in it had to be changed and accounted for. The entire process was one giant problem, and although we expected difficulty going in, it was still many hours of head scratching.” After perfecting its exterior, Pasch turned his focus on the interior and eventually debuted his creation at the New York International Auto Show in April 2011 where it immediately caught the attention of Sony executives who approached Pasch about collaborating on an audio/video build for the EXT. To match the Escalade EXT’s extreme exterior, SONY added an explosive sound system that rattles your bones and leaves your ears ringing for days when powered to its max. To

A Sony Slim PlayStation 3 and gigantic Sony 46-inch KDL-46NX720 LED TV were included for some on-the-go entertainment. Total wattage for the entire sound system equals 11,100-Watts of piercing sound that can be heard for miles. “The finished product compares to nothing else on the road, and certainly not to a stock truck,” he says. “With the chopped roof, air out of the bags, sitting chest high, people don't even understand what type of vehicle it is half the time! We built it to be a game changer and I think that's exactly what it turned out to be.” Its outrageous exterior coupled with a rambunctious sound system made it the perfect display car in Sony’s booth at this year’s CES in Las Vegas back in January. Touring the country like a rock star, Pasch can’t wait to finally have the six-figure Escalade EXT back in his garage to get ready to sell to help finance his next build. 38 DUBMAG APRIL 2012

we’ve accomplished hands down,” Juicy J adds. “It’s a blessing, and we still have the longest Oscar party going on today!” While they both await for Columbia Records to release Laws of Power, Three 6 Mafia is still hustling and keeping fans engaged with their numerous shows and tours. And to provide more excitement to their music, they’ve enlisted the help of their new drummer, Josh Villalta, who has also become one of their best friends and helps manage the guys and their marketing efforts. “I met the guys back when my brother Isaac and I were booking shows in Louisiana,” Josh says. “We had booked them for a gig and went to pick them up at the airport and we just vibed there on. Then, when I was playing a show out in Hollywood with my band, Choleric, Paul came to a show and liked what he saw. I’ve been touring and working with them for the past three years now. My brother also works with them, helping the guys out with business things.” With a background in rock and roll, Josh has comfortably settled in fusing hip-hop with rock-

t’s been a long journey in hip-hop for Juicy J and DJ Paul as members of the iconic hip-hop group, Three 6 Mafia. With more than 20 years in the industry, the duo might be veterans in the genre, but they’re still as hungry as any upand-coming artist. The Academy Award-winning duo may have had numerous lineup changes throughout the years (at its most, there were seven members), but OG members Juicy J and DJ Paul are makin’ big moves with just them two. “Since we made all the decisions for the most part, it doesn’t matter how many members we have since me and Juicy J are the main guys for the group,” DJ Paul says. “We get sh*t done a lot faster now since we don’t have to wait on the rest of the group to sober up and get their asses to the studio.” And the two have been very busy in the studio over the past three years, recording more than 60 tracks for their next album, Laws of Power, due out sometime this year if Columbia Records decides to release it. “The album is gonna be jamming,” Juicy J describes. “It sounds like the old Three 6 Mafia, with some new flava thrown in, but it ain’t no pop sh*t. Pure street music.” “Yeah, pure gangster sh*t,” DJ Paul throws in. “It’s gonna definitely be hard and gritty.” Despite the ever-changing music industry, Three 6 Mafia has been able to sustain their success, keeping it as real as can be, a quality that appeals to fans and newcomers alike. Not considering themselves as changing, but rather evolving as artists, DJ Paul does mention that hip-hop has given rise to mixtapes again, a trait that defined the group’s early years. “It’s cool for us ‘cause we started that way anyways,” he mentions. “But I feel sorry for new artists doing it ‘cause it’s hard to pay bills off of mixtapes. Actually, it’s pretty near impossible, but cats still do it. It’s hard now ’cause you have to give out so much for free since consumers don't want to pay for music anymore. We was making money off of our mixtapes and selling albums. It’s a messed up space right now for new artists.” Both from Memphis, Tennessee, it was Juicy J’s and DJ Paul’s first mixtape that jumpstarted 40 DUBMAG APRIL 2012

their musical careers. “We were both big DJs and decided to join forces and start DJ’ing at clubs since we were two of the hottest DJs in Memphis,” Juicy J recalls. “When we decided to start producing our own tracks and put out our first mixtape, we was like, ‘Man, we can really do this,’ since people was buying our mixtapes left and right. That’s when we decided to take music seriously.” And since then, they’ve released two platinum albums (When the Smoke Clears: Sixty 6, Sixty 1 and Most Known Unknown) and won an Oscar for “Best Original Song” for “It’s Hard Out Here for a Pimp” at the 78th Academy Awards, which was the theme song for the movie Hustle & Flow. Both see the award as a huge achievement not only in their career, but also for hip-hop in general. “That’s a place where rap isn’t usually honored,” DJ Paul says. “That was a huge win for us and the genre. It shows hip-hop has a place everywhere. Man, that was the biggest moment of my life. We was actually getting ready to leave after our performance when we heard we won.” “Winning that award was the biggest thing
styled drumming, while also influencing the guys to add some rock elements to their sets. “The shows with Three 6 Mafia are a lot more laid back than you’re regular rock shows in the sense that everybody isn’t as serious before they go on or anything,” he shares. “With Three 6, they always have a good time no matter what and they’ve helped me remember why I started playing music in the first place.” Besides music, the guys have also ventured into acting and have had numerous guest appearance stints and even had their own MTV show, “Adventures in Hollyhood,” back in 2007. “We actually got some film and TV projects in the works,” Juicy J says. “We about doing it all. But we’ll never quit music. That’s where we started and where we’ll finish. Even though we have our own solo things, we’re never gonna leave Three 6 Mafia behind. We’d be stupid to do so.” “We’re going to keep grindn’ hard as a group as long as we can and continue to put out dope sh*t,” DJ Paul interjects. “It’s what we do and will keep on doing, non-stop.”

JUCIY J: TRIPPY MANE AND MORE Aside from his work in Three 6 Mafia, Juicy J has been pretty busy as the vice president of A&R for Wiz Kalifa’s Taylor Gang label. The two met a year ago and because of their “great chemistry,” they’ll be making “jamming records together,” as Juicy J describes. I want the label to be like the new Motown,” he says. “We have a heavy lineup of musical talent and it’s going to be a great year for us. We’re always looking for talent, but they’ve got to be ready to work ’cause I don’t f*ck with lazy people. They gotta be hungry and ready to grind it out.” His solo mixtape that was released last year, “Blue Dream & Lean” was a commercial success and helped differentiate Juicy J as a solo artist, 42 DUBMAG APRIL 2012
which fans have since embraced. “These mixtapes I be putting out is helping fans see me as a solo artist and it’s helped get me new fans. Right now, I’m working on an album that has a lot of people interested, but I’m more focused on finishing it first and making sure the music is good.” As he prepares his own album, Juicy J is also currently working with artists like Chevy Woods and Lola Monroe, who are up-and-coming acts on Wiz’s Taylor Gang Records. “We’re all making good music and having a good time doing it,” he says. As he grows his musical endeavors, Juicy J is also hard at work branding the phrase, “Trippy Mane,” which he’s been using in his songs and social media updates. “I’m trying to make it a household name. Trippy Mane means that you’re doing what you want, whenever you want. It’s a
APRIL 2012 DUBMAG 43
person doing whatever the f*ck they want to do, so you can be trippy as a motherf*cker, you dig?” Currently, Juicy J is getting trippy mane in his 2011 Rolls-Royce Phantom, which is his favorite ride at the moment. “I ride in it with a driver, and I’m riding this Phantom to the ground. I love to get in it ’cause it’s really comfortable, has some nice rims on it and it’s a chick puller. I’ve got many other rides, and you’ll always see me in something brand new every day of the week. It can be a Phantom one day, a Lambo the next, then an old school with 24s...it all depends on how I’m feelin’ that day.” Totally satisfied with his collection, Juicy J isn’t looking to get any new rides soon, but instead plans to invest in his own production studio. “I want to shoot my own TV shows and stuff like that right now. Cars come and go, so I’m looking to do bigger stuff with my money now.” DJ PAUL: COOKING UP A STORM DJ Paul is also working on some solo projects and is looking forward to the success of his next mixtape, “A Person of Interest,” which will be the first rap/dubstep album ever since he’s been digging the entire dubstep movement. “I laced the old Three 6 Mafia underground and street sound with some dubstep,” he explains. “It's the future sound of music right now ‘cause it’s everywhere. Just look at how Skrillex is killing it. I like it ’cause it’s real bassy and has all these synthesized, crazy sounds that really f*cks with you. I’m slowly easing my fans into my new sound and hope to one day do an entire dubstep album, but I’m calling it ‘dubhop.’” And like Juicy J, DJ Paul has taken an up-and coming artist under his wing, working on bringing up his new Latino artist KoKoe who’s from L.A. and provides that Southern gangster sound DJ Paul is familiar for. “He’s different from other Latino artists and his music is straight from the streets, just like mine. I think he’s hot and gonna be big in the coming year. I’m producing some tracks for him at the moment.” But the biggest thing he’s looking forward to is his BBQ sauce and rub he’s promoting. Growing up in Memphis, DJ Paul has always been a fan of barbecuing and would try any and all sauces and rubs, combining them for the perfect flavor. After thinking about it for years, he finally pursued making his own while filming his reality TV show. “I went into the kitchen to start mixing and researching what flavors worked best for my sauce and rub. I finally came up with one I liked, 44 DUBMAG APRIL 2012
bottled it and started selling it online. We’re selling it in local stores and working on a deal with Walmart to start selling it in their Southern stores.” He also plans on bringing out new flavors, with a spicy one coming out next and dropping a garlic butter after that. Because he loves cooking and barbecuing so much, DJ Paul is also shopping a cooking show around even though he’s already been on (and won) VH1’s “Famous Food,” where he worked to open and compete for ownership in a Hollywood restaurant. But his business ventures don’t end there as he and Juicy J continue to expand their Dangerous and Skandulus clothing line.
DJ Paul’s car game also includes a Phantom, which is one of his prized rides. But he’s all about switching up cars based on what time of day and occasion it is. With a garage that includes Maybachs, Audis, Lambos, Benzes and more, the Phantom is DJ Paul’s showstopper. “It’s got that big grille that you can see a mile away coming down the street,” he says. It’s also a smooth comfortable ride. And even though it’s a big car, it has good pickup in it ‘cause of the V12. Man, you roll up in that and heads turn.” He might already have tons of his dream

rides, but what DJ Paul’s garage is missing is a couple of old schools, which he plans on changing very soon. “I’m looking at getting some late-’60s model rides, like a Cadillac, Buick Riviera and Lincoln Continental with the suicide doors. I like old schools ’cause these days they are cheap as hell to fix and insure.”
not working on Juicy J or DJ Paul’s marketing and promotions, he’s hard at work with his own rock band, Choleric, and Beverly Kills, his DJ/drummer group project he has with DJ Lethal of Limp Bizkit. “I’ve been interested in doing a project like this for a while, but had yet to find the right DJ,” he explains. “Finally, when I met DJ Lethal, I knew it would be a dope combination. I know there might be other DJ/drummer acts out there, but where we’re different is that we make our live shows an entire experience. We add videos to our sets and really get the crowd involved in our shows.” He also started Fan Annex (www.fanannex.
com), which makes connection between fans and celebrities closer. “I’m working with UFC fighters, Playboy Playmates, NFL football players and musicians at the moment, and am looking to make this site huge!” Constantly busy with a full plate, Josh likes to unwind by taking either his Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG, Mercedes-Benz CL550, BMW M3 or Brabus G-Wagen for a spin in L.A. Content with his Benzes, Josh’s eyes are set on a 1939 Street Rod as his next big car purchase. “That’s my ultimate purchase; nothing will beat owing the street rod of my dreams.”

onnie may not be one of the more conspicuous members of MTV’s “Jersey Shore,” but that’s all about to change now that he’s embarked on a new journey in L.A. Still heavily interested in being a part of the “Jersey Shore” family for as long as it runs, he’s now turning his focus to pursuing an acting career and growing his side projects, which include Ron-Ron Juice and his Jersey Laundry T-shirt line. Already a reality TV star on the highly popular show, he has a guest appearance as himself in the upcoming The Three Stooges movie and is on a mission to expand his acting horizons. Now a full-time Angeleno, Ronnie (born Ronald Ortiz-Magro, Jr.) is soaking up the West Coast lifestyle and enjoying riding around town in his droptop BMW 6-Series, which was unfortunatley in the shop getting worked on. We caught up with Ronnie at LA’s Roadstarr Motorsports as he was testing out a couple of hot whips, including the Audi R8 and Ferrari California, as he provided us the rundown on everything “Ron Ron” and shared that infectious laugh of his.
What wheels are you pushing? I have the BMW 6-Series that’s white with red interior. I like white for my cars since it pops. Black is too hard to keep clean you have to wash it every day and it’s a pain. Charcoal is a good color, too. I had a car that color and I didn’t have to wash it as much. But I got the new 6-Series when no one else had it; got it, like, the first month that it came out. Wanted it to be convertible, too. At the point I’m at right now, my cars don’t need a top ’cause I’m into droptops. That’s what’s up! In Cali, you can’t have a top on your car. I bought the convertible first and then moved to California, did it backward, you know? What did you think of the Ferrari California and Audi R8 from Roadstarr? The Ferrari is insane. There’s so much horsepower under the hood that you don’t realize how much when you’re driving it. I got to test drive the Audi R8 and it was sick...really dope. The handling was ridiculous. Those Pirellis really give great traction. Out of the two, which did you like more? Definitely the Audi. The Ferrari isn’t an everyday car and that’s what I need. I can’t be driving around in a Ferrari ’cause it draws too much attention. I’m considering buying the Audi for my next car. It’s really not as expensive as I thought it would be, which is really surprising. So what was your first ride? My first car was a ’86 Honda Civic and then I got a ’92 Accord, and I really went through a lot with that car; it went to Hell and back. I had a rope tying down the hood and duck tape on the bumper. It was all messed up, but it was still good to me and got me from point A to B. What’s your ultimate dream car? I gotta go with the Lamborghini Gallardo. It would be a crazy bright orange color with black interior and black rims…that’s what’s up! Who has the best car game from the guys on “Jersey Shore?” That has to be Mike. He has a Ferrari and Lamborghini. That’s cool and all, but really, I’d rather have a nice house than a nice whip. I’m not totally into cars, but can appreciate a fine ride.

Ronnie’s Air Jordan V Retro Q54 “Quai 54” sneakers are limited edition shoes to commemorate the iconic Paris basketball tournament Quai 54 (that brings together the best street basketball players from around the world). He picked up a pair at L.A.’s Flight Club and dropped about $500 on them (retail was around $160).
RONNIE ORTIZ
What prompted your big move to L.A.? Been in L.A. for about six months now. What motivated the move was that I wanted to get more into acting, and the West Coast has more opportunities for me to do that. But I’ve always wanted to live in California. I love the weather and the lifestyle. I’m young and wanted to try it out. I wanted to be able to say I’ve lived there and liked it rather than say that I’ve never lived there and don’t know what it’s like to be there. It’s really laid back here. But what I miss most about the East Coast is my friends and family. It’s my comfort zone. But they say if you can make it in New York, you can make it anywhere. So I want to see if I can make it in L.A. I do have a couple of friends here, but it’s not like the friends in New York that I grew up with and have been friends with them for, like, 15 years.
CALIFORNIA LOVING WORDS: KRISTIE BERTUCCI PHOTOS: MICHAEL VINCENT | MICHAELVINCENT.COM
What’s your favorite part about L.A. so far? The weather is great, the women are beautiful, so I’m loving it all! It’s like all the beautiful women are funneled through L.A. It hardly ever rains and it’s practically sunny every day. It’s amazing, but I’m still breaking myself in. I’d love a “Jersey Shore” out here! So how did you end up on the show? It all happened one 4th of July weekend when I was approached by some girl who told me how I fit the criteria for some show they were creating. So pretty much I looked like a douche bag [laughs]. She asked for my number and next thing I know, I’m going in for a video interview. I then got the call to be on the show and they told me to quit my job. I was working in real estate at my grandfather’s and father’s company. It was terrible; no one wants to sit behind a desk all day. I’m still investing in real estate, though, to make more money. But the day they told me I got on the show was the day I was supposed to take the NY correctional officer test, so I was still trying to figure out what I wanted to do with myself. But after I got that part in The Three Stooges movie, I realized I liked acting, which is what I’m going to try now. Was your family supportive about your decision to quit your job and be on the show? In the beginning, my father and grandfather weren’t so sure about it and thought I’d be wasting my career. But I’m blessed ’cause they still support whatever decisions I make. They’ll support me whether I’m making a mistake or not. But they won’t let me fall to the point where the mistake will hurt me too much. Did you go in with intentions to hook up with a housemate? I didn’t want to hook up with anybody in the house and would actually make fun of Mike and Pauly for hooking up with Sam and Jenni the first season. But when I got into a relationship with Sam, I didn’t think it was going to be as big as it was. I didn’t expect it to go on for so many seasons. With her it’s great because I have a friend for the rest of my life, as I do with everyone in the house. I do wish they showed me and Sam having more good times and not fighting as much. It’s weird how it works out. They show us more when we are fighting than when we

The worst season was the third one after we came back to the Shore from Miami because they were just showing everything I had done there while we were still living in the house [laughs]. That was like a really long episode of Jerry Springer, the guido version. So is all that drama real or scripted? “Jersey” is real to the core. Everything is not produced like other shows. It’s straight what you see is what you get. The things we do are that crazy…really. Each person has a different role in the house, so what’s yours? I think I have the big brother thing going on in the house. I’m very protective and look out for everybody in the house like they’re my brothers and sisters. But the guys love it when I’m wilding out. Like Pauly said, they love single Ronnie because I’m more crazy and the guys enjoy that. Do you have any expectations going into each season? Now that I’ve done a few seasons, there are no expectations. Now it’s just about going in and having a good time and not being involved in any drama. I don’t want to stress myself out and want to look back to this time and see that I enjoyed it. I’ve definitely enjoyed the ride a bit more after the first couple of seasons, though. What was filming in Italy like? When we went there, we all realized how close we really are because we only had each other in Italy. We got through everything and had a great time. We actually came back closer, so it was pretty amazing. I couldn’t wait to come back and do my usual routine, though. I couldn’t find a protein shake over there for my life. It was all about pasta, pizza and wine, so you can’t really stay fresh eating that all the time. What I really missed most while I was out there was my barber. Vinny was cutting my hair and he did a terrible job. He was more of a butcher than a barber [laughs]. Are there roommates that still annoy you? It used to be Mike, but we fought and got it out of the way. We all get along now. Ever since him and the wall got that beef out back in Italy, things have been cool. We all stay in contact with each other no matter if the cameras are on or off. We’re all family now even if it’s super dysfunctional at times. It’s funny ’cause we’re 54 DUBMAG APRIL 2012
a lot closer outside of the house than when we’re filming since we don’t get on each others’ nerves. Pauly and Vinny came down a while back and hung out with me here and things got a bit crazy [laughs]. A lot of the other members like Snooki, Mike and Pauly are more prominent in the news. Will we be hearing more about Ronnie now? I’ve been doing more press lately. I figured this was going to last for a little bit and didn’t want to burn myself out or saturate the market too much. You always want to leave people curious to what you’re doing and not be out, so much to where everyone is turning the page when you’re the topic. When you first found out you made it on the show, did you think it would be as popular as it is now? Nobody ever thought the show would be this big. I thought it was going to be a one-time thing. I totally didn’t expect it to grow to be the phenomenon it is now. It’s almost like we define an era. It’s funny because after we wrapped up the first season, Vinny and I would call each other up and be like, “Is the show even going to air? What channel will it be on?” We didn’t know anything about the show in the beginning. All we knew is that we had to drop what
APRIL 2012 DUBMAG 55
we were doing in our lives to live in a house with strangers. But I think it’s so successful because people can relate to us. Older people who watch are saying how they used to do what we do when they were younger. Then the younger kids are watching and saying how they want to do things we’re doing on the show when they get older. It’s amazing how many fans we have. Speaking of fans, what’s your craziest fan experience? I had a dude cry over me once. That was awkward. I usually get girls who hyperventilate and shake when they get nervous around me, but when I saw a dude doing it, I thought that was other stuff right there. I didn’t even know what to do with that. I was like “SECURITY!” [laughs]. How has the show helped shape your life? I feel like being on “Jersey Shore” gave me direction. Before I didn’t know where I was going or what I really wanted to do with my life. Now I know I want to be an actor. And the show has allowed me to do so many things and opened so many doors. It was the stepping stone to some amazing opportunities, especially acting. I’d rather be an actor because I’ll get more privacy. With reality TV, everything is out in the open, and I finally want some privacy. It’ll also be fun to be someone else for a change. As you pursue acting, how are you changing people’s perception in order for them to take you seriously as an actor? With “Jersey Shore,” I’m totally myself so people know that I can have a good time. But at the same time, it sucks ’cause sometimes they don’t take you seriously. But acting has changed a lot. I mean, there are singers and rappers who are actors now.
56 DUBMAG APRIL 2012
How’s that career move been panning out for you? Acting is really something you have to take serious. You literally have to place everything else on hold in your life if you really want to make it in the industry. You only have one chance at it sometimes. I was able to do The Three Stooges, but I’m still looking around for stuff. I’ve actually turned down one or two roles. Since it’s harder for us to break through, I want to make sure it’s something that I want to do. I’d rather have one big role than three really small roles. What kind of roles or characters are you looking to land? Honestly, it’s what the script is about. It could be a comedy and you play the stupidest role, but it can totally help blow you up. It could also not be a great role, but you can have amazing actors around you that will make the role that much better. It’s really about the script and people around you rather than the character for me. Besides acting, what other projects are you working on? I’m pushing my Ron-Ron Juice that I make on the show, which will be coming out in stores as a frozen premixed drink. Then there’s my T-shirt line Jersey Laundry that I’m revamping right now. I always stay fresh with a new T-shirt so I decided to try doing something in the clothing industry. Danny from the ShoreStore.com is helping me out with that. I learned that you can make a lot of money selling T-shirts while working there. It’s an easy business if you have the right connections and do it the right way. I’d also like to maybe branch out and have some fitness wear that’s separate from Jersey Laundry.
So what’s in Ron-Ron Juice? Ron-Ron Juice’s recipe is a secret. If I tell you, I’d have to kill you [laughs]. No one in the house really knows what’s in it. I make it on the low when no one is around (technically, at least). It’s the drink you drink when you want things to get weird and creepy and wake up asking yourself what you did the night before. I feel that way every night, which is why I drink so much [laughs]. What are your pet peeves? Always getting asked about if I’m still with Sam or not and how much can I bench. Why do people want to know that?! How much longer will you be a part “Jersey Shore?” I’ll always continue to do the show. It was what gave me all these wonderful opportunities, and if it wasn’t for the show, I’d probably still be behind a desk somewhere. I’ll never turn down another season. I can do this forever. DONALD PENN WORDS: DeANNE DeLUNA PHOTOS: BRIAN McGEE
ONE OF MY BIGGEST ACCOMPLISHMENTS IN MY LIFE AT THIS POINT IS THAT I’VE BEEN ABLE TO PROVE ALL THE DOUBTERS WRONG WHO THOUGHT I’D NEVER MAKE IT TO WHERE I’M AT NOW. 64 DUBMAG APRIL 2012
T
here’s no doubt Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ starting offensive tackle Donald Penn is blessed. Penn never thought he’d play football, let alone make it to the NFL or ever dreamed he’d be living the life he’s worked very hard for. Born and raised in L.A. (Inglewood to be exact), Penn didn’t always have it so easy. He came from a tough neighborhood and had many haters and doubters, which he’s obviously proved wrong. “One of my biggest accomplishments in my life at this point is that I’ve been able to prove all the doubters wrong who thought I’d never make it to where I’m at now,” he says with passion. “I’m one of those guys who does what I say and I showed them that I would do something with my life. Even though I’ve been the underdog throughout all of it. Nothing was given to me throughout my career, which is why I had to grind all the way through…and I’m still grinding.” He has completely overcome all obstacles to become the player he is now. Growing up totally immersed in basketball, Penn didn’t start playing football until his sophomore year of high school. For the rest of his secondary education, he’d switch between playing basketball and football, but it was football that landed him a scholarship to Utah State. From there he went undrafted in 2006, was picked up by the Minnesota Vikings and then ended up playing for the Tampa Bay

Buccaneers where he’s been since 2006. Being in the league for the past six years has taught Penn a lot about the game and himself. He’s definitely noticed that with each year, the new recruits out of college are getting better and better, which serves as motivation to Penn. “I’ve learned that the NFL is very cutthroat,” he
admits. “It’s a job and you can never forget that. Our contracts are never guaranteed so you have to work even harder and always be on top of your game because your job can be on the line. If you don't, they’re going to bring in someone else who will do it better.” Overall, Penn loves football and knows he’s
lucky to be a part of a team. “There are 32 teams in the NFL and only 31 other people that play my position, who go out there on Sundays and do what I do…that’s big. I love the games. It’s the best feeling in the world, when you’re out there in front of all those people and when you play at night, especially Monday Night Football ’cause it’s prime time when everyone is watching. It brings out the best in you as a player.” For next season, he plans on coaching some of the younger guys on the team so the Buccaneers can be serious contenders. “It’s real important for my team that we get our unity back together to be great next year. I think I need to be more vocal and step up to be a leader more, APRIL 2012 DUBMAG 65
which is what I’m working on now. Anything to help my team win.” But Penn didn’t do so bad for the 2011-2012 season and accomplished many of his goals, including beating out some of the NFL’s best. “I shut down some top defensive ends this past season and that’s a big accomplishment for me given I go against some of the best defensive lines in the league week in and week out during the season. And them not getting any sacks against me is big.” Like any other player, his ultimate goal is to have that Super Bowl ring shining bright on his finger, but he definitely has a good feeling about his team for next year’s Super Bowl race and is working hard this off-season. “I’m looking to drop some weight and get back to my old playing weight,” he mentions. “But my off-season
routine is always to just improve on my overall skills to become the best offensive tackle I can be. I’m also working on growing my foundation that gives back to the community.” Penn is big on philanthropic work and started his Donald Penn foundation to help pass on the many blessings he’s been afforded. He does a football camp

every year at his old high school and is looking to start a back to school project for next year. “When I’m in Tampa, I’m always visiting the children’s hospital and this past Christmas, I took 30 kids on a shopping spree at Target. I always wanted to start a foundation and started it three years ago when I was able to afford it. I’m so blessed, that I can’t not give back. It’s something I’m always going to do.” It’s not all work and no play for Penn during his off months, though. He still makes sure he fits in a little R&R in his hometown of L.A. with his family and friends. Given basketball was his first love, you might see him at a Lakers home game or even out on the courts of L.A. balling up with friends. “I’ll never stop loving basketball,” he admits. “I’m always watching games or going to them when I have a chance. But I’m a big family guy and most of my free time is spent with them. I’m an L.A. boy and enjoy the L.A. life during the off season.” In fact, Penn’s ultimate dream would be able to play football in L.A. despite how much he loves playing in Tampa. “It’s my city and nothing would beat playing for where you’re from. That would be amazing!” But until then,

66 DUBMAG APRIL 2012
he’s content always coming home and being able to soak up the L.A. rays while cruising in his very impressive fleet of fine rides. Growing up in Inglewood, Penn first became interested in cars as a kid and would admire the neighborhood vehicles whenever they’d pass by his house as they blasted their sound systems. “As soon as I’d hear them coming, I’d run outside to admire and listen to what they were playing,” Penn recalls. “Ever since then, cars have been my hobby.” And so every summer, it’s been a tradition of his to change up his collection, adding a new ride. Here’s a rundown of Penn’s automotive tastes! What was your first big car purchase after your first big paycheck in the NFL? When I was in the league the first car I had was a Yukon XL with 26s on it, which I then later changed to 28s. I’ve been through a lot of cars since I got my big deal two years ago and was able to really spend some cash on the cars I wanted. My good friend Taron Williams, aka T Money, always helps me out when picking out my cars. We literally sit down and discuss the car and what
APRIL 2012 DUBMAG 67
I want done to it. He’s a big part of it and makes my imagination come to life for my cars. So what’s in your collection right now? The three main cars that I always have with me are a 2009 Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead, 2011 Ford F-150 Harley-Davidson Edition truck, and a 2012 Bentley Mulsanne. I also have a 2011 Porsche Panamera, 2008 Ferrari 599 and the new 2012 Audi A8 W12. Do you have any of the cars out in Tampa? The F-150 always stays out there, but I ship the Phantom and Mulsanne back and forth during the season. I like to have my two favorite cars with me out there for when I feel like driving them. Why are the Phantom and Mulsanne your favorites? At the back of my head, I’ve always wanted a Phantom Drophead but thought it was too expensive and didn’t want to go over the top buying cars I couldn’t afford. After my big deal, all my financial guys gave me the ok to get one and told me how hard I’ve worked and deserved to treat myself a bit. Before I even got my deal, I used the money I had saved on the Phantom and decked it out with some 26s. Taron told me that since it was such a luxurious car, I had to go out and put some high-end wheels on it, which is why I chose to put some custom-built Vellano VTRs on it. Then when I first saw the Bentley Mulsanne, I knew I had to have it. I had never designed a car from scratch and was provided the chance to with this car. I was at the dealership for about two hours, designing it to my specifications. Its paint has three different colors in it, it has red interior with black lining, red leather roof, wood grain finish and a special plate inside the door that says how it’s

more weight since I was able to fully customize it the way I wanted. So that one has the edge right now. But I’ll never get rid of those two. So why the Porsche Panamera and your other cars? For the Porsche Panamera, that one was being greedy during the off-season after my second year of getting my contract. I already had the Phantom and Bentley and needed an everyday car in L.A. I saw Rick Ross in a music video in a white one and it was stuck in my head for a couple of weeks. Then one day I got up and went to the Porsche dealership to test drive one and chose the turbo version. So glad I did because it packs a lot of speed. I also got it in white since it reminded me of my S63 that was wrecked in an accident, so the Panamera sort of replaced it. I got the Audi A8 W12 being customized right now because it’s a hot ride. It’s my new love right now. Just watch when that ride hits the streets!
customized especially for me. I waited practically six months to get the car back. But it was worth the wait since it’s all I ever wanted in a car. The Drophead sounds like a monster truck. It has more than 675 hp in it. My exhaust system growls like a big truck. The Bentley has more than 650 hp in it and growls, too. It rides good on my custom-built 24-inch Forgiato Otto wheels. 68 DUBMAG APRIL 2012
All my cars are decked out from the bottom to the top inside, engine, everything. They’re customized from day one. From those two rides, which do you prefer more, though? Man, that’s tough. It’s really a toss up. They’re both my dream rides, but the Bentley does hold
What do you always customize on your rides? All my cars have to have new wheels on them and they all sport Forgiatos. I love Forgiato wheels. They’re a big name in the rim game and not everybody can have them because they’re so high-end, which is what really attracted me to them. You have to spend some serious money to get them. Plus they always have the best styles around. With each of my cars, they always sport the latest styles that Forgiato has at the time. All of them are built to order, too, which means they make sure they’re perfect before they put them
on my ride. I’ve built a great relationship with them and sometimes give them ideas on new wheels now. I also always have to do my engine work and gotta give my cars some noise. When I step on the gas pedal, you gotta know I’m coming. Another big thing is tint. Those are my top three, but I really like to get detailed on most of my rides. Like my Panamera has black accents that really stand out against the white paint and goes
with the black and white 24-inch wheels (which others felt wouldn’t fit). Since you change cars so often, what do you have your eyes set on next? Next summer I need a sports car. Something with two doors and fast like a Ferrari or Maserati. I love the Ferrari 599, but it’s not big enough for me. Gonna get rid of it. I’m a big guy and need to be comfortable in my cars. It’s hard to fit into

sports cars, but the newer models allow for the seats to go really far back so I’m thinking of upgrading to a new 599 or 458. But if I don't get a sports car, I’m actually thinking about getting a Maybach. All the bosses have one and I’d like to add that to my stable of cars, but that would be a forever car like my Bentley and Phantom. THE FRESHEST RIDES: DRIVEN
2012 JAGUAR XKR-S “The fastest Jaguar ever built.” WORDS MIKE DALY PHOTOS: LANCE VAUGHN
A
merican history books often begin with a quick lesson on the differences between British and American thinking during the Colonial-era, expounding on the concepts of taxation without representation. By the time of the musical British Invasion during the 1960s, contrasts between Brits and Americans had gotten much friendlier, but for knowledgeable automotive buffs an obvious difference remained. While post-war American cruising cars were famously defined by their muscle, and the resulting straightaway power afforded by their big-block engines, English sports cars were conversely renowned for their tight suspensions and handling, which usually offset the underwhelming performance of their inline 6-cylinder motors. Other than a few pioneers that stuffed big block V8s into diminutive British sports cars, like legends Carroll Shelby and Sydney Allard, this formula held true for a very long time. That is until Aston Martin began putting V8s under their hoods in the 1970s, essentially creating a new breed—the English muscle car. Since then, both Aston Martin and competitor Jaguar were acquired and later sold by Ford, their identities and their cars almost irrevocably diluted by Dearborn’s mass-production manufacturing system of parts-sharing, regardless of what lay under the hood. And the concept of the classic English muscle car became a dormant and lingering memory…until now. Recalling the brawny performance and chiseled guns of its competitor’s V8s of the 1970s, Jaguar has released a limited edition of the XKR that adds sinewy muscle to the sports car’s 2009 second-generation redesign. As recently as 2006, the XK had evolved into a curvy, if bloated car, heavy on amenities and restrained in performance. Clearly, the company has changed
THE ALL ALUMINUM SUPERCHARGED DUAL OVERHEAD CAM V8 PRODUCES A 0-60 MPH TIME IN 4.6 SECONDS.
APRIL 2012 DUBMAG 73
its notion of sex appeal since then, for the newest version looks like an E-Type fused with a late Mustang—angular scoops decorating a short rear deck and a long hood, or bonnet, as the Brits call it. Aerodynamic tweaks smack of a tuner’s dream body kit, with a ride height that is 10 mm lower, and separated nacelles on the front fenders that channel air and resulting downforce over new sidesills, all contributing to 26% less lift than the prior XKR. Sealing the deal is a rear wing made of carbon fiber, the first-ever use of a spoiler on a Jaguar production car, and quad-exhaust pipes that feed past carbon fiber diffusers. Like any true muscle car, though, the XKR-S’s character is about more than a tightly sculpted body; performance is the name of the game. Yes, there is a V8 under the hood, and though it is not an American block, Jag’s latest version of the 5-liter AJ-V8 motor has been retuned and supercharged to develop a whopping 550 horsepower, a formidable figure by any measure. Equally impressive torque numbers, 502 lb.-ft. at just 2,500 rpm, launch the car to 60 mph from standstill in an officially quoted time of 4.2 seconds, which some outlets of the automotive press have reportedly shaved down to 3.6 seconds. Top speed is 186 mph, reaching the esteemed European plateau of 300 kph. It’s the kind of British punch that recalls memories of Lennox Lewis’ left hook. The ferocious performance doesn’t exactly jump out at you, though. Upon first drive, the XKR-S is sedate and luxurious, well mannered to the point of, dare I say, boring? Like many other cars in this class, the XKR-S hides its performance under the guise of a series of interface adjustments. Only when properly summoned does the V8 show you what it can do. Like all of Jag’s current production line, starting the XKR-S is a performance in itself, with the Start button beckoning the driver after entry with a pulse-like heartbeat illuminated in red. Hold down the flashing ignition button while depressing the brake, and the V8 fires to life, the transmission selector dial rising theatrically from the center console. The dial’s normal Drive mode offers the obligatory gentlemanly cruising, but one notch to the right, in Sport mode, things take a more perilous turn, as shift points on the 6-speed ZF automatic transmission drift into
74 DUBMAG APRIL 2012
higher rpms before upshifting. Though steering wheel-mounted shift paddles can be activated in either of the drive modes, when used in Sport they remain active for much longer, relying on driver input for shifts as in a true F-1 set-up. Pressing down a checkered-flag-marked button near the transmission dial enacts Dynamic mode and reveals the Performance Exhaust System, which grumbles the V8’s throbbing oscillations with each stomp on the accelerator. A ceiling of sportiness can be reached with various adjustments of the Dynamic Stability Control system, which intelligently calibrates the newly re-sprung suspension (now 28% stiffer) to various road conditions to
enhance traction and handling. Enthusiasts who want to maximize the slides can turn the DSC off entirely and throw the car’s weight into the turns waiting for the rear wheel grip to inevitably break free. With 502 lb.-ft. of torque, you can basically do donuts in this car just pulling out of a gas station with a tad too much foot on the throttle, even with the stability system on. So things could surely get out of hand quickly with the system disabled and driver confidence brimming with the car’s awesome performance. Fortunately, the XKR-S is grounded by Jag’s High Performance Braking System, which features astoundingly large 15-inch rotors up front, and 14-inch rotors on the rear wheels.
APRIL 2012 DUBMAG 75
After the considerable selling point of the XKR-S’s brutal performance, the vehicle’s positives unfortunately fall off somewhat quickly. The touchscreen infotainment interface is a great idea that still requires some fine-tuning. At seven inches, the screen feels comparatively small and is marred by a dull, mostly-duotone readout. The touch function isn’t particularly sensitive, sometimes leaving one poking at the dash while trying to remain focused on traffic, and the screen’s unorthodox command layout renders the Sirius Satellite radio unusually difficult to use. Furthermore, extensive use of plastic components in the dash console and surrounding interior pieces (such as the instrument housing that easily flexed when I inadvertently pushed on it slightly), suggest a build quality a tad lower than what we’ve come to expect from the folks in Coventry. This underlying deficiency, however, likely explains why a car of this performance and admittedly stunning appearance costs only $132,000. Keep in mind that the flagship production car from the aforementioned competitor in Gayden, England, goes for roughly twice as much, and its performance numbers do not favorably compare with those of the XKR-S, to put it nicely. On the plus side, the 16-way electric memory seats are quite comfortable despite the buttons’ strange door-side location near the dashboard, and innovative safety considerations are evident in the intelligent LED headlights, which enhance nighttime visibility by illuminating secondary side-facing beams when a turn signal is activated, or when the steering wheel is turned. At the end of the day, the XKR-S fulfills its mission statement of performance over style while never losing its stately identity as a Jag, a worthy heir to the classic British muscle cars of the 1970s. And perhaps nothing clarifies that success more than the number of heads that turn to hear the XKR-S rather than to see it. Despite the attractive and vaguely exotic body design, it is the car’s growling V8, audible a full city block before it is visible, that attracts the most attention. Or, as one of my neighbors put it, “that thing sounds expensive!” Comfortably appointed and blazingly fast, the upgraded XKR exposes few faults, save for its long aerodynamic chin— which is subject to inevitable road rash, and a few less-than-premium interior components that ultimately bring the car’s MSRP within the reach of non-millionaires.

MEAN DOE GREEN
REMEMBERING THE GOLDEN DAYS OF HIP-HOP PHOTOS: MICHAEL ALVARADO / TOKEN MEDIA GROUP @TOKENMEDIAGROUP
M
ean Doe Green (born Kahalie Oden) isn’t about gimmicks. His music isn’t about all the flash or the glam, but instead opts for the real and inspiring. With hip-hop that’s reminiscent of joints back in the ’90s, Mean Doe Green’s making music that can stand the test of time. His perfect balance of thoughtful rhymes, bountiful beats and street edge makes for start-to-finish listens of his mixtapes, or “free albums” as he calls them. Throughout his years in hip-hop, the Sacramento native has undergone name changes, starting off in the game as John Doe then transitioning into Doey Rock before settling in with his current moniker. His many name changes provided a metamorphosis for the rapper, as he not only evolved his art form, but also his personality, which helped invigorate his creativity and skills. He’s shared the stage with genre greats like Raekwon, KRS-One, The Roots, NAS, Xzibit and many more, so he’s no stranger to the grind and hustle of what it takes to make it in the hip-hop world, yet he refuses to let accolades define him as he continuously puts on free mixtapes for the enjoyment of his fans. Meet Mean Doe Green and discover your next favorite artist. When did you first fall in love with hip-hop? My cousin from New York introduced me to mixtapes, and I just liked the flavor of how they sounded—the beats and rhymes. As a kid, girls always liked the rappers, and what kid didn’t want to get the girls. I gravitated toward stuff from Wu-Tang and NWA, but I really liked different stuff or anything that was going against the grain and that wasn’t already played out. It didn’t matter what region it came from, just as long as it didn’t sound like anything else. What sparked your interest in making music your career choice? After I met Method Man and Raekwon in the studio. My friend grew up with them, and I used to hang out with all of them all the time. The excitement of being in the studio and all is what I think sucked me into wanting to really pursue hip-hop. I was 16 when I first met them and we’ve been rocking ever since. I made myself available to those who I knew 104 DUBMAG APRIL 2012
were doing it to see if it was even something for me as a career. I then took it upon myself to get into the studio and I put out my first project in 2006. That was kind of like to see if it was possible for me to do this whole rap career thing. Obviously it worked and I’ve been doing it ever since. For six years, you created music under Doey Rock, but have since then changed your moniker to Mean Doe Green. Why did you feel the need to change it up, and why did you pick Mean Doe Green? I actually use both still. I was in a transition stage of my life when I decided to change from Doey Rock to Mean Doe Green. A lot of personal things were happening at the same time things weren’t going right for me so the name change was, like, a fresh start. It was a way to reintroduce myself to fans and re-energize my own self and creativity at the same time. It’s something I
took from the Wu-Tang Clan, where they created all these monikers for themselves and created different personalities with them. It’s a way to keep me fresh as an emcee. When I was on tour with Raekwon last year, at some shows he’d introduce me as Doey Rock and at others as Mean Doe Green. I thought it was a good thing because people then could go and find my stuff under both names and be exposed to more of my music. Even though some may still be confused, what I did to make it easier on everybody was to make sure I always place both names on any of my releases or projects, so whichever name they’re researching me on comes up. How did growing up in Sacramento, CA, influence your music? Honestly, it didn’t at all because Sacramento is one of those weird hybrid cities where we’re
influenced a lot by The Bay and things outside of us. I wasn’t in the city during my musical revelation days and was on the road a lot, so I didn’t really feel first hand what the city was about when I first became interested in hip-hop. My music was mainly influenced by a lot of L.A. people on the East Coast, some down South and many out in L.A.
My process is simple: find the best beats available and get with like-minded producers to make sure they’re sending me progressive, crazy beats. And then I put myself in the mindset to outdo what I did on my last project. Engineers sometimes get mad at me for going over songs so much, but I have to do it until it’s right. I’m a perfectionist like that.
What sets you apart from other artists out right now? The fact that I refuse to do what everybody else is doing. You won’t find anything on my album where you can place it in any particular genre. I just always want to come from a different angle, really. But I’m not necessarily trying to be so different
What other artists are you feeling right now? I like Common’s new album a lot. I’ve been working with Chuuwee out of Sacramento, and I’ve been a fan of him way before we started doing stuff. Then there’s Action Bronson I’m also digging. I’m also feeling Adele and might bust a Beatles station on Pandora to get inspiration. I
that it feels like it’s out of place. My music touches on real things that’s happening in society right now, and I think that’s what hip-hop is missing. We used to always have something we could relate it to in society and not just what we want in life. Everything in hip-hop is now giving people what they think they want—whether it’s nice things or females or whatever. It’s always pushing the sexuality part of everything, where cars are sexy, clothes are sexy, people are sexy…everything is super sexy. But sh*t, don’t get me wrong, I like nice things, too, but I’m trying to provide an even balance of it all in my music instead of getting stuck in one zone like others tend to.
like to stay current on what’s out right now, even though it’s not hip-hop.
Many praise you for making hip-hop that’s reminiscent of the golden age of the genre. Was this always your intention or just something you drifted toward? Well, I was influenced by classic hip-hop artists, so that’s just my state of mind when I go into making songs. I make sure it’s a song that can last like any Biggie or 2Pac joint. For the most part, I think my catalogue can be played over a period of time and maybe even sound better as time goes on. Maybe some of my stuff is ahead of its time compared to what’s out there now. I also want my albums to be felt and loved in any situation like either in the club or when you’re chilling at home. What does your creative process involve? I gotta hear the production first and the music.
What are your goals for your career? I just want to keep evolving and making better music because the day I turn out ten whack songs in a row, I just might have to lay it down. I don’t really get too much into accolades or praise and just want to be on stage and stay current in this game. I also want these hip-hop cats to see that I’m not afraid to go against the grain…now or ever. What’s 2012 have in store for you? Just going with the flow and focusing on one thing at a time. Right now I’m really gearing up for my Shade Proof mixtape that will be a big statement and seeing where that goes. It’s a free album like my last two. I like to give them away because then people can get used to my music quicker so when I’m out on stage, they can rock with me. Even though it’s considered a mixtape it has a feel of an album. You won’t find any DJ talking or anything on it.

F
rom being DMC champion three years in a row to all-around party-rocking DJ, Craze is as skilled as one gets in the DJ world. When his mom asked him what he wanted to do with his turntables, Craze confidently replied, “Be the best DJ in the world.” And after years of practice, winning battles and causing fans to go “ape sh*t” on dance floors all around the world, Craze has accomplished his childhood dream. While he may be modest in how he sees his DJ status now, there’s no refuting that Craze is indeed one of the world’s most versatile and sought after DJs that can fuel just about any musical atmosphere— whether it be at a club or massive festival. As a co-founder of Slow Roast Records, Craze is focused on making it one of the hottest labels out there, filled with eclectic artists who drop more than just hits. An already skilled DJ, he’s also turning his focus to the production side of his career and is gearing up for one banging year. Take us back to when you first discovered turntables? I guess when I was around 15, my brother had bought some turntables and speakers and all that stuff ’cause he wanted to be a local DJ. And that was the first time I had seen turntables, and I thought they were so fresh and so cool [laughs]. After that, that’s what I wanted to do and gots me some turntables when I was 16. The rest is history. How did you acquire the name “Craze?” There’s no interesting story to that. I was in high school and rolled in a crew, and the main dude was not feelin’ my name at the time (think my name was Flex or some sh*t like that in high school). Since he wasn’t feelin’ it, he suggested “Craze,” so I wrote it down and thought it was cool and it just stuck. What made you want to become a battle DJ? How did you perfect your skills? I used to watch all the DMC battles, and I thought it was cool and what they were doing with turntables was amazing. So I just started practicing really hard until I started winning battles and that’s how I became interested in that aspect of DJ’ing. Before all my battles, I would study all the DMC videos and put them in slow-mo and try to copy the moves that Qbert was doing. I just spent crazy amounts of hours in my bedroom, looking at videos and trying to
WWW.PIONEERDJUSA.COM
...THAT’S WHAT I WANTED TO DO AND GOTS ME SOME TURNTABLES WHEN I WAS 16. THE REST IS HISTORY. mimic what they were doing while still coming up with my own kind of flavor. What was your biggest accomplishment during your battling days? I guess the biggest one was winning the DMC title three times in a row ’cause it hadn’t been done before. And I had my whole family supporting me out there, and they finally realized what I was doing. Before, they just thought I was DJ’ing music and sh*t and didn’t know I was a battle DJ or the type of skills I had. What are the major differences between being a battle and club DJ? For battle DJs it’s all about the battle and those six minutes you get to show everybody what you could do with your skills. What made me different was that I not only had my technical skills down, but I also added a little party rock element into it. I wasn’t just trying to show off my skills. I was trying to have the crowd involved with what I was doing, so I would pick songs that they would
know and stuff. But battle DJs are strictly about turntables and their skills. For a club/partyrocking DJ, you’re more there for the people. You have to control the vibe and have to rock the party hard. You have to play whatever you have to play to get the people moving, which can be hard at times, depending on where you’re at. What’s your genre of choice when on the turntables? Man, that’s hard to say ’cause there’s so much good music out there nowadays. There’s so many dope producers out there, so it switches up for me, like, all the time. Sometimes I like rocking a bit of house in the clubs for the grown and sexy, but sometimes I want to get dirty and play some dubstep. Sh*t, sometimes I want to play drum and bass and other times I want to rock some dope ass hip-hop sh*t. It all depends on what club I’m at because I like rocking to everything. That’s my thing. I get bored of playing one style of music, so in all my sets there are a couple of genres in there blended up. But right now what APRIL 2012 DUBMAG 107
and a dope mixer, preferably a Pioneer DJM-909. How did your Slow Roast Records come about? Slow Roast Records came about after my boy Kill The Noise sent me a couple singles, which I thought were amazing, but he was having problems putting out his own music at the time. I suggested he start a label, and he was telling me he didn’t know how to do it. And I was just like, “I don’t know how to do it either, but I’ll help you out with it.” I then suggested we start a label on our own, and he was down for it since we have similar taste and wanted to put out music together. I had spoken to A-Trak about my idea of starting a label and he was like, “Man, I’ll help you out with whatever” and gave us a subsidiary deal with his Fool’s Gold label. From there, we just started putting out music, with Kill The Noise’s EP the first thing we put out.
I’m really banging is Moombahton; not the noisy stuff, but more the Bro Safari sh*t that’s coming out right now.
Any new projects for the label? We have this new guy, Codes, and put out his EP. He’s somebody I’m very excited about ’cause he’s on fire right now. He’s doing a little bit of cool new styles of production and stuff like that. This year, I’ll put out another EP and then drop Kill The Noise’s Roots remix package. We have a lot of music this year and are just focusing on building the brand and putting out quality productions.
What’s your preference: classic vinyl or MP3 setups, and why? Well, you know the digital vinyl system sh*t because with vinyl I would just throw my sh*t around and it would get scratched up and the grooves would wear out easy because I’d scratch
You’re Yelawolf’s DJ. How did this venture come about? Yela hit me up ’cause he needed a DJ, but I really wasn’t up for it at first. I DJ’d for Kanye in 2008 and it really wasn’t my cup of tea and wasn’t really feeling just being in the background playing
WHEN I PLAY, I NEED TRAKTOR, TWO 1200S AND A DOPE MIXER, PREFERABLY A PIONEER DJM-909. all over them. I wasn’t really taking care of my vinyl that much and sometimes I wanted to play album cuts, but they sound really low on vinyl ’cause the grooves are thinner, so I prefer digital. Digital is easier and lighter to carry, too. At what point did you decide to make music rather than just play it? The game’s changed. Like before, you could be a dope DJ and be on top of the game, but it’s changed more into a producer’s game. But being a DJ for such a long time, production is a natural progression for me. I’ve been into making beats since I started to DJ because they go hand-in-hand. Lately, I’ve been trying to get into it more because I think I’ve accomplished a lot in the DJ world, but haven’t done that much with my production. What’s a Craze production entail? Right now, when I sit down and make a beat, I’m just totally about what I’m vibing to at the moment. I’ll play some records that I’m really enjoying and try to see where I vibe with that and can build upon it. Then I just start creating. It’s like how I DJ; I really never plan sets and just come up with it in my head at that moment. I’m really inspired by other producers like Joker and, of course, Skrillex. He’s a monster. Then there’s Switch, Qbert and so many greats from different genres. When I play, I need Traktor, two 1200s 108 DUBMAG APRIL 2012
music and not being able to shine. But with Yela it was different because he told me he wanted it to just be me and him on stage— no hype man, no nothing. Just a raw hip-hop DJ and an MC. I’m a fan of his music, so I thought about it, and he kept bugging me so I said “f*ck it” let’s do this for two months. We toured the U.S. and Europe and while I was on tour, he was showing me all this new music from his album, and I was freaking out thinking this guy is gonna be huge. He’s really that dude right now. I’m not sure I’ll stay as his DJ because I still have to focus on my label and my career, but I’m definitely there when he wants to rock those big shows. I’m definitely supporting him because he’s an amazing MC. So we’ll see were that goes. How do you find the time to be a DJ, run Slow Roast, a producer and a remixer given you’re hectic travel schedule? I don’t know, you gotta make time. I wake up everyday just doing it. I love what I do first of all, so it’s not always just a job. I make sure to still be me, though. I gotta wake up make calls, answer emails, make beats, blaze a little bit, do more beats and blaze more then finish up my day [laughs]. But I love doing it all and really love making beats and coming up with new routines. It’s like a video game to me. Actually, the creating part of it is the dope sh*t—making beats and
scratching and all that stuff. The business stuff isn’t as much fun, but it’s cool still. You’ve done intimate shows, to massive festivals, which do you prefer doing and why? And what is your most memorable gig to date? I like doing small little cool clubs. It’s the small clubs where fans are there for the music and not just to wild out. Festivals are cool as sh*t, too. Looking out and seeing ten thousand people all jumping at the same time is amazing. But sometimes I like the small little clubs where the real heads know what’s going on and they’re going ape sh*t. Most insane gig ever? Man, I’ve got a bunch. I think rocking with Kanye in 2008 was just crazy. Oh, hell yeah, and the stop at Madison Square Garden for his Glow In The Dark Tour was insane. Kanye had just played the new song “Jockin’ Jay-Z,” and he gave me the instrumental and told me Jay was gonna rock with us. I was just, like, “WHAATTTT!” It was crazy for me to hear that sh*t ’cause I’m on stage just watching them, thinking in my head, “Holy sh*t! This is really going down!” Oh, and winning the third DMC title is up there, too. What’s your take on the current EDM (Electronic Dance Music) scene? It’s cool ’cause it brought attention to EDM, plus just lookin’ at what Skrillex is doing right now is amazing. Everything is well deserved, but when something blows up that fast and so quick there’s only one way to go. When things blow up too quick, it can get corny and not really last in my opinion. Skrillex will last, but other people (and I don’t want to name names ’cause I don’t want to be a dick) won’t ’cause they have that generic sound. Skrillex has something straight from the heart and homeboy kills it. Who would be your ultimate collaboration? Not to sound like a dick, but I think I’ve done a lot of them. Actually, I’m down to do something with A-Trak on some turntablism/hip-hop/weird dance sh*t tip. We’ve always talked about it. There’s a song we’ve started from way back together, but never finished. It’s hard to get sh*t finished and started since we have such different schedules. Something with Joker and Switch would make for some hot sh*t, too. What do the stars hold for your career? I’d love to DJ for the rest of my life. It’s fun, but my 10-year plan from now on is to make Slow Roast Records one of the coolest labels out there. My next dream job is to be at home in the studio making beats and having my own world without having to travel. I just want to leave behind a legacy that showcases that I was someone who did all kinds of music and always did it fresh and the way I like to do it. That I always had my own little flavor going. Oh, and definitely be as the dopest DJ ever and then producer (as I perfect my producing skills).

“MY GOAL IS TO WIN, SO I’LL DO EVERYTHING I CAN TO MAKE IT HAPPEN.”
T
here are some athletes who are born to win and others who work hard for their victories. Then you have motocross/ supercross champion Ryan Villopoto, whose accolades are a result of both. For the Washington state native racing isn’t just a career—it’s his life. The athlete competes to win and only win, which is why he’s at the top of his sport. Last year, the 23-year-old won the FIM World Supercross Championship, AMA Motocross Championship, Motocross of Nations Championship and the inaugural Monster Energy Cup, which was one of the most accomplished seasons in history for a rider. Villopoto is constantly tuned into everything motocross/supercross related with an intense focus that can’t be matched, a perfectionist’s work ethic and a killer instinct. This winning combination has been key to his success throughout his career. “My goal is to win, so I’ll do everything I can to make it happen,” he explains. “When you’re a top guy in the sport, it’s tough; you’re racing week in and week out for championships and there is no room for error. It’s an entirely different mentality than for someone who’s out there racing for a top 10. To be able to win, you have to not only be consistent but be out there every day, hitting it hard on and off the track.” Supercross (which is the stadium version of off-road motorcross racing) starts in January and goes on until May, with motocross following throughout the summer until September. The saying “Championships are won in the offseason” holds true for Villopoto.“The real work is done in the off-season, constantly pushing yourself to hit that next level and build your base just a little stronger than the year before. However, that’s also one of the downsides of our sport, you never really get time off. You can take roughly 10 days off at the most, but in order to stay up on our physical abilities, we need to be out there every day. You get out what you put in.” Villopoto makes it clear that his sport is not a ride in the park. People may think it looks fairly easy, but Villopoto refutes the claim, describing how hard it is to even just stay on top of the bike. APRIL 2012 DUBMAG 119
“We race on dirt, which everybody thinks is soft and great, but for us it’s a different story. You have to be focused not only on the race itself, but the track that’s deteriorating below you with each and every lap. Then throw in 20-40 guys (depending on if it’s supercross or motocross) and mechanical factors, which you have no control over.” Fortunately for Villopoto, his Monster Energy Kawasaki Team is on top of their game, providing him with an excellent machine and a strong competitive edge. For the past seven years, Villopoto has raced professionally, but his history with the sport goes all the way back to when he was barely four years old. “It first started as a hobby, with no real goal of becoming a professional,” he reveals. “I got to a point where I was doing pretty well so I decided to try and take it to the next level, which was the amateur nationals. It kind of took off from there.” With a family of racers (his grandfather and father also competed), one could arguably say that his talent is innate, but Villopoto believes it’s only part of his winning formula. The rest being his rigorous training schedule, which propelled him to climb the ladder from amateur to professional quicker than some, and might have led him to mature faster. But according to Villopoto, all of these only helped fuel his success. He didn’t realize his potential until he turned pro (back in 2006 in the AMA West Supercross Lites Series at Angel Stadium in Anaheim, CA, riding a Kawasaki KX 250F), where he was able to size himself up against the sport’s other greats. “Once I did a couple of races and did pretty well, I realized I had the speed to run up front and knew it was just about tweaking a few things.” He did just that, winning three consecutive motocross titles and one supercross title before stepping up to race with the big boys in 2008 on a Kawasaki KX 450F. Everything Villopoto does comes down to the focus of the No. 1 plate, whether it’s riding, working out or mentally preparing. “It’s hard for me to think about what it’s like, mentally, to line up at the gate for a fifteenth place finish because I’ve never been in that spot. I’ve always been a guy who’s going for the win and ultimately championships. I know that when I line up at that gate, I have done everything possible to be ready and I am confident.” When stepping out on the track, Villopoto doesn’t rely on music to pump him up before a race—that’s what the crowd and fans are for. Every stop on the tour provides a natural adrenaline rush, which fuels his internal fire. “Music would make me just even more nervous,” he explains. “I just go there and do the opening 120 DUBMAG APRIL 2012

ceremony stuff. Then I scope out the track and watch the guys in the races before mine. During that time, I get pretty pumped up from all the energy the crowd gives off.” At the top of his game, Villopoto does know his limits and already has a plan in store for life after racing. Giving himself another three years of intensely focused racing, he plans on reevaluating where he stands in his life and career and if he’ll officially hang up his racing boots to pursue other options. “I know I have a three-year window where I can race at this level, but I’d like to eventually try to start a company of some sort after I’m done in the sport. I’m not sure exactly what, but I know that given the sponsors I have now, I definitely have a few avenues to try out so the possibilities are endless for me right now.” He also admits he’ll try out other interests like winter sports, surfing and will get to focus all his energy in other things he hasn’t been able to enjoy while totally tuned into his sport. But being on top does have its perks like winning the first Motocross of Nations Championship and the inaugural Monster Energy Cup last October. He was able to win all three races (each had 10 laps), which provided him a million-dollar prize. “I felt confident going into that race since it’s shorter than the regular ones and there were no surprises because some of my main competitors weren’t there.” Now a yearly event, Villopoto will enter this year’s Monster Energy Cup and looks forward to taking home the big prize again. As Villopoto’s approach to racing is calculated and focused, it carries over into his financial and business approach as well. Despite being in the position to purchase almost any car he desires, he currently only has a Range Rover for his wife, Ford F-250 truck, and a GMC truck. But he does have his eyes on a Ford Raptor and also admits to having a liking for luxury cars, specifically BMW and Mercedes-Benz. Although, he would opt for an Audi R8 if he had “endless amounts of money to spend”. “I’ve heard good things about that car,” he describes. “I’ve never been in one, but I’ve been told that they’re fun to drive and you get more for your money than buying other sports cars like Ferraris or Lamborghinis.” As far as modifications, he
confesses that he likes to keep his rides clean and opts for only custom wheels. FALKEN TIRE ON RYAN VILLOPOTO Ryan Villopoto’s success has attracted many sponsors, including catching the attention of Falken Tire (The Official Truck Tire of the AMA Supercross Series), who linked up with the Supercross athlete last year. “We chose Ryan for a few reasons,” says Nick Fousekis, Falken Tire’s Director of Motorsports Marketing and Events. “We first liked his personality. He’s very humble and easy to work with, so it was a perfect fit for us. Then, since he was a Monster Energy athlete and we work with Monster Energy through our Formula D drifting efforts, it was a natural

progression to get him on board. We were also attracted to his motivation and desire for the sport even while recovering from the previous year’s horrible injury.” For the shoot, Ryan was able to take Falken Tire’s custom-built Toyota Tundra out for some light wheeling. The rig showcases one of Falken’s newest entries into the off-road market, the Falken WildPeak A/T. The Tundra made its big debut at the 2010 SEMA Show, which was when they announced their collaboration with Supercross, and has since traveled across the country for nearly all AMA Supercross series events. Their new WildPeak A/T tire is available in a wide selection of sizes and has already been used in a variety of off-road events, ranging

ar restoration is an art and can’t be taken lightly, just ask Ohio-based Spade Kreations. With more than 10 years in the customization game, owner Rick Spade has grown Spade Kreations to be one of the most well known shops in the country. While smaller work can be done within a few days, maybe a week tops, a total transformation of a vehicle can take months to completely finish to guarantee nothing but perfection. Spade Kreations has proven that perfection can be done in a short 21 days, which was the exact time they had to restore the ’57 Chevy Bel Air that debuted at the 2011 SEMA Show. “The car came to me as a painted shell, with no engine, suspension or interior,” says Ken Thornton, Head of Marketing for Spade Kreations. “We were told that the owner wanted to take it to SEMA, which at the time was less than a month away. We pretty much focused our entire attention to fixing it up to make that SEMA deadline.”
Opting for the best of the best in parts, Rick and his team made sure that everything selected was a perfect fit for the Chevy. The only demands he was given was that it was to have an E-Rod LS3 crate motor, ride on TIS wheels and sit as low as possible, with Spade Kreations given free reign on everything else. “That car took about 1,500 man hours,” he says. “When we first got it, we thought there was no way we would get it done on time because of the fact that resto-mods can take some time to build so that everything turns out right. It’s not easy to take an old car and fit it with modern features, but we were able to get it done just in time. And the finished product matched up to what we exactly first pictured for it.” The Bel Air is definitely an American Classic, but it’s really young at heart, featuring many modern parts that allow it to drive as if it was a new car. Perfection at it’s best!

ENJOYING THE FINER THINGS IN LIFE WORDS: KRISTIE BERTUCCI PHOTOS: ROMAN RACELA/ GOLDRUSH RALLY OFFICIAL PHOTOGRAPHER MO SATARZADEH
T
he Internet is cluttered with thousands upon thousands of forums that are devoted to endless topics, but when Ramin Arami and a couple of close friends noticed the void in luxury automotive forums, they quickly remedied that by creating their own. Officially launched on June 1, 2008, Luxury4Play.com has quickly become the go-to place for lovers of not only luxury vehicles, but for that luxurious lifestyle. The virtual community for enthusiasts of all the finer things in life—high-end cars, boats, exotic travel and precious timepieces—has grown to become a powerful force within the automotive world. Not only with its site, but also with the numerous events they host, merchandise they provide fans and friendships it has fostered through its four-year existence. We were able to sit down with Ramin to get the scoop on the popular automotive social network and its involvement with the growing goldRush Rally. How did you and your friends think about the idea for the site? We wanted to create a place for friends and likeminded people to come share and enjoy their passions without having to worry about the drama of everyday life as other sites devoted to news and stuff usually reminded us of. We wanted to create something that was a place to forge new friendships while being able to share our passions for luxury things like cars, watches and more. We were all part of different online communities and realized there wasn’t one that combined everything we liked, so we thought it was time to change that. Right now there’s three of us involved with the site: I’m a partner and the APRIL 2012 DUBMAG 139
site’s creative director then there’s Alex Correa, and Ben Chen. One day, we were sitting around brainstorming ideas on a name and the whole idea about “luxury for play” came about so we went with it. After about two years, people knew us as “L4P,” and now people even know us as “4.” We have pictures of members on the site that hold up four fingers and everybody knows what it is. From there, the entire process took about three months until we went live. All we knew was that we wanted the site to be user friendly and have a clean design to it all. It’s actually had one facelift since 2008, but we tweaked minor things. We have about 30,000 members worldwide even though our intentions were for it to be more of a national community among automotive enthusiasts. We’re not in it for the money or anything. Our members, like us, are passionate about this lifestyle and the bad thing about forums is that you never really meet the members. But our goal is to take the online forum and bring it to your members’ neighborhood so that they can meet up at events and even form lasting, meaningful relationships. I know I’ve met many of my best friends on the site! How’s the site organized? It’s mostly based on exotic and luxury cars, with each make having their own page, but there’s also forums devoted to American muscle cars, classic cars and more. Then we have our lifestyle forums for watches, travel and even something on business advice and more. The only rules we have for the forum is nothing on religion or politics because that’s where things can get heated. One unique thing about our community is that unlike other forums, we change up each section instead of having it all the same. We have a new sponsor on each section so for example, the Lamborghini section is sponsored by Lamborghini Beverly Hills and features their logo. Our biggest achievement thus far is having Koenigsegg Automotive as a marketing partner. In the next few months, we’ll also have Bugatti coming in as a sponsor. This has never been done before. There’s never been a forum that’s had the chance to have luxury/exotic car manufacturers come in and be sponsors. We have an admin team, advisory team and moderator team that look after the site. The moderator team is comprised of senior members of the community who have been with us since day one. They donate their time and have a deep passion for keeping the community on track. 140 DUBMAG APRIL 2012
“WE’RE NOT IN IT FOR THE MONEY OR ANYTHING. OUR MEMBERS, LIKE US, ARE PASSIONATE ABOUT THIS LIFESTYLE...”
MASERATI GRANTURISMO TUBI EXHAUST // FORGIATO AGGIO WHEELS
How do you acquire your sponsors? We’ve never really reached out to them. They’ve all heard of us and wanted to be a part of what we’re doing with the site. We currently have about 90 sponsors now and just in the past eight months, we’ve had more than 600 inquires. But we’re very selective with who become sponsors. With us, it’s more about quality than quantity and that’s with everything we do.
to see how these owners have achieved their current status and what they’ve done to be able to afford such lavish vehicles. But we’ve never been about the number of members really. It’s more about the quality of members as it is with the quality of posts. We didn’t want to grow too fast and we’ve never advertised for members. We owe our growth to our sponsors and current members who tell their friends and families.
How does one become a member? It’s really easy since it’s a free site. Just register, pick a username and then enjoy posting on the various forums to see what people are talking about and more. People not only share the cars they have, but also the cars they’d love to get. But about 60% of our members actually own the cars they post about while the other 40% admire the culture and would like to some day own a specific car, so they’re on the site to get more information on where to get them, their upkeep and how the current owners were able to get them. These members use the site as some sort of inspiration
How would you describe your members? Most of our members are between the ages of 30 and 45 and are financially well off or bringing home a higher income, have multiple vehicles and have at least one exotic. We have many doctors, lawyers and entrepreneurs that are part of the community. Then we have those who just love cars and want to talk about their passion with other fans and owners alike. There’s a great balance of both actually. What forums have the most traffic? From the automotive side, I would have to say

cars. But we always stay within legal limits and participate with local law enforcement so that certain roads are blocked only for us or that we have police escorts at some places on the routes when needed. We’re always trying to deliver a high-end, VIP feel to the rally. We stay at fivestar hotels and visit the best clubs in the cities we visit. We’ve booked hotels like the Four Seasons in Denver, SLS in Beverly Hills, the Wynn and Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas, Mandarin in L.A. and many more. As far as events, we’ve booked things at the Las Vegas Motor Speed Way for exotic car races, Spring Mountain Motorsports Ranch in Las Vegas for track events, had private concerts and performances and have been to clubs like XS and TAO in Vegas. But we do offer awards for best track time, dirtiest car, craziest themed car and stuff like that. Last year we had a participant in a Lamborghini LP640 who had a Star Wars wrap on it. There’s also an award for best team spirit that’s voted by all the teams. When they register for the rally, they’re registering for two and it’s open to both men and women. Last year we had five teams where the drivers were women.
PORSCHE PANAMERA TURBO MATTE WHITE CARBON MANSORY KIT // MONOLEGGERA CONCAVO-M WHEELS
the Lamborghini one sees the highest traffic, with Ferraris and supercars after that. For our lifestyle topics, our Off Topic area gets the most views, which is where members can talk about anything they’d like. After that, we have a huge watch collector community so that forum sees a lot of traffic, too. Besides the site, what else is Luxury4Play.com involved with? We sponsor a lot of events throughout the year that are national. One of the biggest ones so far is the Concorso Italiano that happens during the Monterey Historic Races Weekend. Then there’s the Supercar Experience in Miami and lots of charity events. This year we’ll be raising money for the Hugs for Brady Cancer Foundation and the Taylor Lynn Foundation for needy children. But the biggest one that we sponsor is the goldRush Rally that myself and Ben own. We’re now in our fourth year. Where did you get the idea to start the goldRush Rally? Again, it started with a bunch of friends wanting to get together and take our cars out for a long drive. 142 DUBMAG APRIL 2012
Do more participants tend to favor the driving or the events part of the rally more? We try to give them a variety of experiences every year. There are days when we have 10-12 hours of driving and then there are shorter days where it’ll be about six hours and then events at night or some track-oriented event. Participants seem to like both. Not only are the drives pleasant and fun with scenic routes, curvy roads and more, but all the events provide that VIP treatment. Last year we rented a yacht out in Dana Point for our Los Angeles stop and had our party there, which featured things like our awards ceremony and a bikini contest.
The first year we had 40 cars and started in San Francisco and ended in Vegas. The second year we went from Seattle to Vegas, and last year we started in Denver and ended in L.A. Since we’ve only done West Coast locations, we’re expanding it to the East Coast after being asked by so many members. This year we’re starting in L.A. then going to Phoenix and staying in Vegas for two nights. From there the cars will be transported to Atlanta, where we’ll hit Panama City, Orlando and end in Miami.
What kind of cars participate in the rally? We’ve had everything from Lamborghinis to Ferraris, Maseratis, Porches, Bentleys and more. We’ve even had a friend of ours purchase a cop car and it was called the “Gold Digger Patrol,” complete with sirens and all. The rally is open to any car, but the majority tends to be exotics. This year, we actually have a couple of Bugattis in the rally, which should be interesting since they’re not exactly great on gas. But we’ll have fuel tankers following to help those drivers along the course of the rally.
What does the goldRush Rally entail? Well, it’s not a competition at all, so it’s not a race. We’re more about enjoying the beautiful routes and roads we’ve planned with a large group of friends. Then we add in a bit of luxurious experiences at the best hotels and clubs where everybody gets the VIP treatment. It’s like a caravan of all cars, where we all drive together down some of the most beautiful routes ever imaginable then we all party with each other, too. We also provide various track events and drag races during the rally so that participants get to really use the maximum potential of their
How long does it take to plan a rally? Well, after each one, we usually start talking about the logistics, but things don’t start to get intense until six months before the rally. To be honest, there’s quite a lot of planning that’s involved with the rally, everything from booking hotels, finding routes and stuff like that. We have a special goldRush Rally advisory team that handles all the logistics. I’m a creative director partner at a branding agency in Silicon Valley that works with tech companies, but as both Luxury4Play and the rally grow, I’m shifting my concentration to doing those two with every year that passes by.
APRIL 2012 DUBMAG 143
about the size of the event. My focus will always be on the experience and I hope to look for new roads, routes, cities, hotels, nightclubs and more so that participants always experience the best. We want to keep it a national thing and don’t really have plans at the moment to expand internationally even though the interest is there. We have participants coming in from all over Europe for this year’s rally. As for the site, we’re planning on creating more events across the country for members to partake in, from small meet ups to big car shows. How did you first become passionate about cars? I was born with it [laughs]. What started it all was my fascination with VW bugs. I had about 15 of them at one time. I’d work on them myself and then race them. I learned to work on the from friends I hung out with in the scene and I’d add, like, Porsche engines to them and fix them up so that they’d still have that vintage feel to them. Back then, it was affordable and easy to work on them and that was my gateway into my automotive passion. Since then I’ve owned various cars, including Mercedes-Benzes, Maseratis, and more.
PORSCHE 997 TURBO TECH-ART GT STREET WIDEBODY // 805 HP BBI 800 PACK
How’s goldRush different from other rallies like the Gumball 3000 or Bullrun? We don’t see those as competition. In my experience, there’s three huge rallies right now and we’re one of those aforementioned ones, but we’re each so different that you can’t really compare us all. Each experience is different. For us, we focus more on the luxurious experience overall and aren’t focus on having so many entries. What’s been your favorite goldRush Rally to date? My favorite was last year’s rally mainly because everyone stayed together as one large group. Usually some go off into their own separate groups, but last year that didn’t happen and everyone interacted as a whole group. There were 64 teams last year, which translates to 128 participants so you could imagine what a large group we had. We’re looking to have about the same number of teams this year, too; anywhere from 60-80 team. But I’m looking forward to this year’s rally since we’ll be ending everything in Miami and it’s the epitome of nightlife. We’re planning on going to one of Miami’s hottest nightclubs and staying at a five-star hotel. It’s going to be a lot of fun. This year’s goldRush Rally 4 will start in L.A. on June 9th and end in Miami on June 16th. Any crazy moments you care to share? Well last year, as we were heading to Las Vegas, we were stopped by two police cars. We were going the speed limit and all and weren’t doing anything legally wrong. The cops then started to weave back and forth to slow us down and they eventually closed the freeway. They pulled us all over and proceeded to take all of our licenses. We thought we were in trouble, but it turned out that they knew we were coming and wanted to stop us to take pictures with all of the cars and participants. We’ve also had the rapper Bun B join us in last year’s rally and then for our second rally, we were in Seattle and Sir Mix-a-Lot attended our party. He debuted his new single to everybody there, which was pretty cool. 144 DUBMAG APRIL 2012
What are your future plans for the rally and site? For me, it’s all about the people who attend the rally. I’ve created so many special memories from these past four years that I’m never going to have it be
What do you have in your collection now? I own a Maserati GT, ’63 convertible Lincoln Continental that I bought from a collection so it’s in great condition, 4.8 BMW X5 and a BMW 3-Series. All of them are driven on a daily basis, too. I’m actually planning on getting a Porsche GT3 RS soon. It’s a really fun car and is very agile with great handling. I used to own a couple of Porsches before I went to Italian cars, but I’d really like to add another Porsche to my collection…hopefully for rally time.

n 2004, the Mercedes-Benz CLS was introduced, combining the charisma of a coupe with the comfort and practicality of a sedan. Once Brent Khelawan first laid eyes on the CLS, he knew he had met his automotive soulmate. “It was designed to have the looks of a sports car with four doors,” the Washington D.C. police officer says. “I just had to have it. It’s still my favorite car, and I’ll probably keep it forever.” While the CLS is a stunning beauty and headturner right from the factory, Khelawan still wasn’t convinced it was stunning enough for his personal tastes. Police Officer by day, Khelawan moonlights as a tuner, having learned the ropes from watching his cousins modify cars while growing up on the island of Trinidad and Tobago. With a 1999 Mercedes-Benz ML as his first big build, Khelawan knew he had to take his CLS500 to a higher level. The Lorinser kit was chosen even before he purchased the car, while the burgundy and grey combo had always been his favorite interior color choice. The COR wheels were added because of their carbon fiber treatment, and the carbon fiber headlights are easily his favorite mod hands down. “It makes the car look evil, and I’m the first person to do this to a CLS,” he claims. All the customizations help make Khelawan’s CLS500 a one-of-a-kind creation, but what makes his ride so special is that it’s the first CLS in the U.S. to successfully receive a supercharged AMG 5.5-liter M113k motor swap that came from a 2005 E55 model. Khelawan went to great lengths for the switch (he enlisted the help of his good friend Eliazir Chavez), and encountered some minor bumps along the way. “After completing the motor swap, the entire
car needed to be VIN coded,” he says. For this, he hooked up with Rudy Compart of Accelerated Industries, who flew down from Minnesota to Maryland with all of his equipment to complete the task. The final result has more than exceeded Khelawan’s first expectations for the CLS. The
smoking hot ride is actually nicknamed the “BMW Killer,” after winning a few races. But besides continuing to race his highly prized CLS, he’s also looking to show it off at various car shows across the nation, where it’ll probably end up winning as many trophies as it has races.

T
he 2012 DUB Show Tour made its way to Houston, TX for the very first stop of the series, and it was an amazing way to start another great year! We jumped everything off as part of the Houston Auto Show that was happening at the Reliant Center from Jan. 2529. Our DUB Show Tour area was packed every day during the Auto Show, mainly because we brought out a full collection of some of the nation’s most tricked-out bikes, sickest customs and best booths around! Progressive Autosports brought out a heavy collection of exotics that were beyond stunning, while 713 Motorsports teamed up with Forgiato to showcase an envious fleet of vehicles that had everybody at the show talking. Extreme Off Road had some of the craziest trucks we’ve ever seen in a long time. The Monster Energy Zone saw
heavy traffic as everyone wanted samples of all their flavors, including the DUB Edition drink. And because we know how everyone loves the UFC, we brought out two Texas-based fighters, Yves Edwards and TJ Waldburger, to meet with fans at the UFC booth. The Pirelli Lounge not only featured their tires, but also their lovely models that took pictures with all the fans that also walked away with a special Pirelli bag filled with goodies. And no show would be complete without the car clubs representing! Shout out to Swift, Holly Boys, Nokturnal and Tex Riders for coming out to the show. A special thank you goes out to all our sponsors, including: Monster Energy, Pirelli, UFC, Mobil 1, Kawasaki, “The DUB Magazine Project,” TIS, Dropstars, Monster Energy Edition Off-Road Wheels, MOTIV Luxury Alloys and Gear.

PHILADELPHIA JAN 28 - FEB 5 2012
T
he 2012 DUB Show Tour is well underway, and our second stop for the year was visiting the City of Brotherly Love for this year’s Philadelphia Auto Show. While the Auto Show went on from Saturday, Jan. 28 through Tuesday, Feb. 5, the DUB Show Tour provided loads of excitement at the Philadelphia Convention Center for showgoers throughout the weekend with all of our custom cars on display, interactive booths and celebrity meet and greets! This year, the weather for the Show was amazing given last year provided a bit too much snow, so attendance really increased from last year’s Philly stop. Our area received non-stop traffic all weekend and fans were totally stoked to check out Pauly D’s custom crotchrocket by Killer Kreations that was on the cover of Issue 76 up close in personal. Speaking of bikes, the 2012 Custom Bike Shoot Out Presented by HarleyDavidson was a huge hit with visitors given that it showcased the hottest customized HarleyDavidson cars and bikes from around the nation. The sickest bike for the Philly show and winner of the 2012 Custom Bike Shoot Out Presented by Harley-Davidson was Sean Nickson who went home with a set of Pirelli Night Dragon Tires. But besides showcasing some of the world’s hottest custom rides, we also brought out UFC Fighter Nick “The New Jersey Devil” Catone to catch up with fans at the UFC Booth inside the Harley-Davidson Area. Of course, no DUB Show Tour stop would be complete without the beautiful Pirelli girls that caused a stir in Pirelli’s Lounge as everyone wanted pictures with the beauties. The Monster Energy Zone was the place to chill and scope out some dope MC and B-Boy battles, while checking out the coolest Monster Show cars and bikes. Philly’s own Fred Sicoli of Killer Kreations was also representing his artistic skills with all the vehicles he’s perfected. Pioneer’s booth provided the latest and greatest in their sound offerings, while Highend Vine Street Car Stereo also had some bumping sound systems. Other booth favorites included: United Auto 166 DUBMAG APRIL 2012
Accessories, Evolution Performance, Image Audio, 215 Motoring, Point of View, Shades of Gray, Sound Of Tri-State, Tricked Out Cycles, Metro PCS and Elite Epoxy. Thanks to everybody who showed up to enjoy the Philly DUB Show Tour stop! But a huge shout out to our sponsors for making the stop possible: Monster Energy, Pirelli, Harley Davidson, UFC, Mobil 1, Kawasaki, “The DUB Magazine Project,” TIS, Dropstars, Monster Energy Edition Off-Road Wheels, MOTIV and Gear.
