lassic cars have a funny way of reigniting memories long forgotten. This issue is filled with them—many of the subjects of this issue confess their love for their vintage machines.

Up-and-coming lyricist from Maybach Music Group, Stalley, can be heard referencing his appreciation for old school rides throughout his musical catalog. His top choices of classics include Camaros, Caprices, Chevelles, Barracudas and Cutlass Supremes, with a ’68 Camaro and ’86 Monte Carlo sitting pretty in his garage. ORACLE Lighting/Advanced Automotive Concepts decided their 2010 Camaro needed its 1969 forefather to highlight the stark transformation of the old to the new. But that’s not the only transformed Camaro in our pages. For this month’s Factory Tuned, we showcase a decked-out 2010 Camaro HPE600 that owner Ricky Mason had been lusting after ever since he first laid his eyes on a 1969 Camaro SS as a kid. Another fan of classics is Clippers point guard Mo Williams, who has an impressive collection of classic American metal that include a ’64 Impala, ’69 Camaro, ’96 Impala and his 1972 Buick Centurion, which he bought back in his rookie year. He attributes his love for classic cars to his “old soul.”

For Ralph Holguin of RMD Group, owning pieces of history is more than just a walk through memory lane—it’s essential. His ’56 Big Window Ford F-100 is an ode to his dad, who owned a similar truck when Holguin was a child. The F-100 isn’t the only thing from days long gone in his garage; Holguin has his own vintage museum where he keeps classic Schwinn bikes and other goodies he’s always wanted but couldn’t afford until now.

Cars are also great for forging new experiences. Tyga’s gold Audi R8 and Drophead Phantom are testaments to his newfound success, something he’ll always be aware of whenever he drives them. Then there’s New Orleans Hornets small forward Trevor Ariza, who only gets behind the wheel of a new car once it’s customized to his own unique specifications.

INTERN Brian Aviles

Here’s to the cars that are worth remembering. Enjoy 78!

READER FEEDBACK

“JERSEY SHORE” INVASION

THE HUSTLE NEVER ENDS Man, Three 6 Mafia has been around forever, you don’t see that in the music industry nowadays. They helped put Memphis on the map. It’s good to see them still dropping hits. Their label needs to get their sh*t together ’cause I need some new Three 6 Mafia sounds in my life. Oh, and DJ Paul’s BBQ seasoning is the bomb.com! I use that sh*t every Sunday when I’m out BBQing. Big props to some hiphop greats!

more good tunes for all of us to enjoy like Juicy J and his Wiz Khalifa collabo and DJ Paul’s own mixtape. And thanks for pointing out how good DJ Paul’s sauce is. We gotta make sure to cop us some to try!

Malik B. What’s up with the “Jersey Shore” invasion? Ronnie’s the third jackass you’ve featured from the show, and I can really care less about what the gorilla guido is driving. I’d rather see the hotties on the show like JWOWW and Sammi on the cover, standing next to some sweet rides than those fools. Let me guess, Vinny is next up for a cover?

All we know is that those “Jersey Shore” dudes have some pretty fly rides, so don’t be hating, Paul. DUB is about all things car-related and they just so happen to be relevant in the scene. And thanks for the request to see the girls of the show in DUB’s pages…we wouldn’t mind making that happen!

We’re with you on needing some new Three 6 Mafia flava in our lives, Malik! It’s a shame what the industry can do to good music and acts and this is just one example of how messed up it can be. But don’t worry, Juicy J and DJ Paul aren’t leaving us with nothing and are working hard on some solo projects that include putting out

SUPERCROSS SUPERSTAR

LUXURY4PLAY I’ve always heard about Luxury4Play, but never really knew what it was until I came across the article on them in Issue 77. My initial thought was that it was a site just for rich peeps that had sick ass cars. But after reading about them, I decided to become a member to check it out and must say, it’s definitely inspiration to become rich! There are so many enviable rides on the site that I’m more motivated to one day own my dream car, a Lamborghini Gallardo. The site also has forums on some pretty cool and interesting topics, and I’m now more addicted to it than Facebook!

I’m not really into supercross, but, damn, Ryan Villopoto sounds like a fierce competitor! I would hate to be going up against him in a race. His die-hard, always-be-number-one mentality makes sense if you really want to win and always be on top. But then again, it doesn’t seem like he has much fun after reading his article. Why work hard if you can’t play hard? George L. Via Email

16 DUBMAG MAY / JUNE 2012

Ryan Villopoto is definitely a fierce competitor, George, but he’s the type to work hard now then play hard later. He knows he only has so many years to compete and isn’t wasting any time or chances in order to stay on top of his game. He figures he can have fun after he retires from the sport, which makes sense. For now, Villopoto has his eye on the prize and isn’t going to let anything distract him, not even time for fun.

Charlie Via email Our first thoughts were the same as yours, Charlie, about Luxury4Play. All we knew was that it was a place to scope out loads of hot rides and

didn’t know that it was open to all sorts of members. Ramin Arami really provided us great insight into what L4P really is and gave us a cool behind-the-scenes look at the goldRush Rally. It’s always good to get some motivation to do and get the things we really want out of life, so good luck working hard in making your dream ride become a reality!

T

here are things in life you can’t put a price on. For Ricky Mason, his Hennessey Camaro is definitely one of those things. As a kid, he vividly recalls watching drag races on the streets, with one particular driver racing a 1969 Camaro SS, which immediately became his dream car. “He never lost,” Mason remembers. “I told myself that one day when I could afford it I was going to buy one. But by the time I had saved enough money to buy it, the new 2010 Camaro was released. I did a lot of research comparing the two and that’s when I found out about Hennessey’s Camaro. When it came time to purchase the new car, I was able to get the 2010 Camaro plus the upgrades from Hennessey for less than a restored 1969 Camaro SS.” Mason had finally acquired his dream car, but it wasn’t fully complete until he upgraded the stock sound system. After searching for the right installer, he came across Jeff Moore and Sound Waves in D’lberville, Mississippi. “We knew after talking to Jeff that he would do quality work and provide the exact audio and visual results that we wanted. I knew I could trust him with my baby.”

Once Sound Waves captured Mason’s vision on paper, the installation was underway to transforming the Hennessey Camaro into a boisterous machine. For two months, Moore and his Sound Waves crew spent many late nights filled with work and Taco Bell to achieve Mason’s dream. The end result was a massive sound system powered by Rockford Fosgate equipment. The interior was customized with handmade tweeter pods for the A-pillars, custom illuminated plexiglass kick panels, custom door panels with LEDs, an LED Chevy logo that illuminates red, white and blue that can be seen through the 1-inch plexiglass subwoofer enclosure in the rear, and an American flag

airbrushed on the roof of the enclosure. The trunk lid houses a 10.4-inch TV with 5.25 Rockford Fosgate Power Coaxial speakers, two 10-inch subwoofers and two Rockford Fosgate PATRIOT airbrushed Power Amps in a fiberglass amp rack. The final product is even better than Mason ever imagined. “The people at Sound Waves are so talented and have such a vision that their work goes way beyond the initial designs that we were shown at the beginning. They take pride in their work and it comes across in every inch of what you see.” Primarily a show car with the occasional weekend cruises, Mason is more than satisfied with his dream car, but isn’t ruling out some enhancements later on. GOLD SOFAS, GOLD BOTTLES, GOLD WOMEN GOLD GRILLS, GOLD RINGS - WHY YOU TRIPPING? — “MONEY LIQUOR,” TYGA

N

ot everybody is lucky enough to possess the magical touch of success that’s known as the “Midas Touch.” The famous King Midas of Greek Mythology was blessed with (or possibly cursed with) the ability to turn anything he touched into gold. Such is the case with rising rap star Tyga. The young lyricist from Lil Wayne’s YMCMB posse has obtained the kind of success every aspiring rapper dreams of. But Tyga’s golden touch isn’t all about his career. An admirer of gold, Tyga has extended his Midas Touch from his music and career to his ride and enlisted the help of Roadstarr Motorsports to provide their golden dressings to his Audi R8. “I told them I wanted it gold with black wheels, but I didn’t know exactly what it would look like,” the 22-year-old L.A. rapper says. “It looks crazy though, man. This sh*t look fake, like a toy or something. That sh*t is crazy!” As Tyga’s personal street toy, the gold chrome ride isn’t just a way to stand out, but rather an extension of his personal style. “A car is the reflection of who the driver is. It says something about the style of the driver just like how your choice of beats or the way you dress says something for an artist,” he says when he first surveyed the recently painted ride at Roadstarr’s L.A. facility. “Gold is just something that’s powerful and solid when you see it. I’ve always been a fan of gold since I was younger because it represents who I am.” Even before his head-turning R8 went into the shop, Tyga already knew he wanted an R8 like no other, as referenced in his “Rack City” lyrics : I’m a motherf*cking star / Look at the paint on the car. 36 DUBMAG MAY / JUNE 2012

As a boy, Tyga (born Michael Ray NguyenStevenson) dreamed about the days he’d be able to afford his own Lamborghini. But when he finally did start bringing in the cash, he dismissed his yearnings for his childhood dream car and opted for something more refined. “I didn’t want one now that I can afford it, which is weird. But my style overall has changed now that I’m older. I’m more into class and style and prefer to have something different from the pack. Everybody has a Lamborghini these days. I liked that not a lot of people (those who can afford it at least) own Audi R8s. They’re just as fast as a Lamborghini, but have more style. And mine being gold just takes it to another level.” Transforming Tyga’s gold R8 was no easy task, but Hussein and Hassan Iddrissu of Roadstarr Motorsports were able to deliver a one-of-a-kind masterpiece. “Tyga is a nice kid,

and all us here at Roadstarr Motorsports wanted to make sure that we created the best marriage between this gold Audi R8 and this upcoming superstar, Tyga,” Hassan mentions. “We made sure everything about this gold Audi R8 represented this young man, his swag, his style and his love for life and youthfulness. We were all glad to be able to bring his dreams into reality.” Although Roadstarr Motorsports has done elaborate paint jobs on vehicles before, they’ve never dressed one up in gold and wanted to make sure the color was as close to looking like 24k of gold. They actually had to do about 60 samples in order to get the richness of gold they wanted, mentions Hassan. “The process of actually creating the gold effect is quite complicated and only a few in our industry are able to replicate this great quality in finish,” he adds. “We finished it off by adding a set of matte

black Savini Forged wheels size 20” up front and 21” in the rear and wrapped them with Nitto Invo tires. The whole team and staff at Roadstarr Motorsports were all excited and astonished with the degree of craftsmanship and meticulous care in making this timeless piece for Tyga.” While the gold R8 satisfies Tyga’s inner speed demon, it’s his Rolls-Royce Drophead Phantom that manifests the luxurious lifestyle he’s now been afforded after signing with Lil Wayne and his YMCMB label. But it wasn’t always on his list of dream cars. “The Phantom was unplanned. A friend had one and I was able to drive it for a few days and realized how awesome it was. I was like, ‘Damn, this sh*t is crazy and I need to get me one these joints ’cause I’ve been working too hard.’ But I think I’m good for now, though. Don’t think you need to have too many cars when you only got one ass.” More than satisfied with his car game (for now), he isn’t hating on those who have a love for fine rides and admits that Birdman’s garage is very enviable. “Hands down, the boss,

SEEING PEOPLE AROUND ME BE MOTIVATED TO PUSH THEIR TALENTS TO THE FULLEST INSPIRES ME TO PUSH HARDER. number one stunna, has amazing cars,” he says in admiration. “I rolled in my first Bugatti with him. He got all the cars, any car you could think of. Cars I didn’t think they made. That Bugatti is a crazy fast car, too. Wayne has a lot of cars, too. He’s not as flashy about it, but has a sick car game.” Tyga mentioned that Young Money Entertainment President Mack Maine also just purchased a Rolls-Royce Ghost and loves his new ride just as much as Tyga. Tyga’s hard work is paying off as the young rapper still continues to stay on the grind on his musical journey that has taken him from the streets of Los Angeles to the worldwide hip-hop stage. And he’s had lots of help from other hip-hop icons, something that continues to be motivation for his craft. “Seeing people around me be motivated to push their talents to the fullest inspires me to push harder. surrounded by a team of successful artists can sometimes have you caught up in their success. But that’s never happened to me, even being around Lil Wayne when I first was coming up. All I did was just take notes on everything he did and used it as my own.” But it took a couple of years of note taking for Tyga to sign with Lil Wayne and the YMCMB team (they first hooked up at the MTV VMA’s back in 2006), something that he didn’t mind. “I wasn’t ready actually,” he confesses. “I had to still find out who Tyga was, so I’m glad everything worked out the way it did in the end. And I couldn’t have asked for a better place. They really support creative artists and let you do what you want to do, which is really important.” Now confident with his skills, Tyga is creating his own buzz and awareness with fans, the music industry and more thanks to his chart-topping party anthem, “Rack City” off of his recent sophomore release, Careless World: Rise of the Last King. “I look at this album as my first album,” he reveals. “My first album, No

It says a lot and fans will go through every type of emotion on this joint ’cause I talk about everything from love to success and, of course, partying. There’s a song called ‘Black Crown’ on it that’s dedicated to my mom and it really describes where I’m at in my life right now and fans are going to hear that.” The album also features notable collaborations with Lil Wayne, Nicki Minaj, J. Cole, Robin Thicke and even Nas, which was something that almost didn’t happen. After sending him a track and never hearing back, Tyga wrote it off as a no go. But after the song ended up getting leaked, Nas hit him back up and gave him the green light on working on the project. “I really never expected him to do that and it really

means a lot to me. The timing had to be right and everything happens for a reason, which is why I continue to always push myself every day.” The rest of the country might recognize Tyga for his “Rack City” joint, but in L.A. it’s more about the “Lob City” remake for the L.A. Clippers. “I’m a big fan of Chris Paul, and he called me like, ‘Yo, the ‘Lob City’ joint is crazy.’ So I had to put it out. I recorded it and I dropped it. He called me that same day, so it was crazy. I did it for L.A. It’s fun. I go to the games and stuff.” But being from L.A., Tyga is well aware of the rivalry at the Staples Center and admits to being neutral. “I’m also a Kobe fan and love the Lakers, so it’s not like I go for one team or the other. I’m more a fan of the players than the team. But I really like the team the Clippers have right now.” The Comptonraised rapper does admit to trying to catch some basketball games for either team when in L.A.” When he’s not making music, hitting games or on tour, he confesses he loves to shop. While some rappers have sneaker obsessions, Tyga looks for “style and swag,” something that his Last Kings clothing line embodies. “I grew up with trendsetters and Last Kings is about being trendsetters in our culture. People want to be a part of something like back when Rocawear and Sean John first dropped. That’s what I’m trying to do with Last Kings. I’m helping fans feel part of this culture I’m growing and feel like royalty.” The collection features tees, snapback hats, hoodies and even varsity jackets, including some women’s items. Another business venture for the young Tyga is running his own record label, also called Last Kings. He’s currently pushing his new female MC, Honey Cocaine, and looks to establish a label as successful as Young Money Cash Money. The rising star from the YMCMB camp is finally reaping the benefits from years of the hustle and grind to get to this point in his career. And while he’s soaking it all in, he’s still grounded and humble. “I’m here, but I’m far from my peak,” he comments. “I’ve worked hard to get here and it’s been a great start. It’s what I wanted and how I pictured it. But I have a long road ahead of me.” 42 DUBMAG MAY / JUNE 2012

TREVOR ARIZA ON AND OFF THE COURT

WORDS: DEANNE DELUNA PHOTOS: MICHAEL VINCENT | WWW.MICHAELVINCENT.COM

I

t’s been seven years since Trevor Ariza became a professional basketball player and he still remembers draft day back in 2004 when the New York Knicks selected him in the second round. “It was surreal, and I was very excited,” the 26-year-old small forward for the New Orleans Hornets says. “I was very disappointed, though, that I went late. But I was excited to have the opportunity to accomplish one of my life long wishes. It’s one of the moments you wait for.” Never taking one moment for granted on the court, Ariza is quite the accomplished basketball player. Not only was he part of a storied basketball program at UCLA for a year, but he has also played alongside many All-Stars (including Kobe Bryant, Chris Paul and Dwight Howard) and holds a 2009 NBA Championship ring from his time with the L.A. Lakers. Despite all the success, Ariza is a very modest athlete, who hasn’t let the success affect his game or mind, allowing him to be Trevor Ariza on and off the court. “I just try to put everything in perspective, and I have no ego either,” he admits. “The success has allowed me to be able to play the sport that I love for the greatest fans in the world. It’s only changed the fact that I can attain more things, but I’m still the same person.” And some of those things he’s now able to “obtain” include a garage of fine vehicles, including a Range Rover, Mercedes-Benz S600, Porsche Cayenne and Cadillac Escalade. With his eye on the prize of another championship ring, Ariza took a few minutes from his busy NBA schedule to give us the low down on his accomplishments, the season and, of course, his rides!

MAY / JUNE 2012 DUBMAG 53

When did you realize your talents at basketball? I was 11 years old when I got on the court and realized it’s what I enjoyed doing, and I was pretty good at it. I actually played football before and that was my passion until I grew too much. Since I was tall and slim, I had to start playing hoops. As a kid you always dream of being in the NBA. I realized I had a gift at an early age, but it wasn’t always easy. I had to work hard to get to where I am. Who are your inspirations? My mom is definitely my inspiration. She’s always kept me grounded and going since I was a kid. You were able to stay for one season at UCLA. What did you learn while part of their basketball program? They have a lot of tradition and take pride in their school. The year I was there they named the basketball floor in Pauley Pavillion after John Wooden and his wife, Nell. It was a great experience being a part of such a culture. I learned a lot and was proud to be a part of a great program. What was it like playing for the Lakers and being apart of the 2009 NBA Championship team? Winning the NBA Championship in your city, where you have your family and friends and all of your greatest memories are, is one of the best feelings. It’s something you can’t describe. You work your entire life to get that ring and getting it in your hometown makes it even sweeter. 54 DUBMAG MAY / JUNE 2012

What did you learn while playing with guys like Kobe? The competitiveness. They play at a high level every single play whether it’s at practice or game time. The drive never stops when you reach the next level and win a championship, ’cause you just want another one. So far, how’s the season treating you in New Orleans? What’s been the highlight of this season thus far? Really, just coming together as a team. Going through a season like this, you really get close with your teammates. You get to see them at their worst. It brings us closer together because

we are all going through the struggle together and it builds character. What about the biggest highlight or achievement of your career thus far? Winning an NBA Championship title and getting a ring has to be the biggest achievement as of right now. That’s what you play for your entire career. Getting better every season as a player and pushing myself is another achievement I pride myself in. What prompted you to start your Trevor Ariza Foundation? I started the Trevor Ariza Foundation because I had asthma growing up as a kid and I wanted to

A lot of kids think they can’t follow their dreams or play sports because they have asthma, but I’ve played with it and always took care of myself and took precautions. My foundation also focuses on emphasizing the importance of education for our youth. It means a lot to me to be able to reach out to our youth especially in underprivileged communities to let them know that education is empowerment no matter what stage in life you are. I take a lot of time and really give back to the youth, so I hope I can change the minds or influence one more person growing up in tough communities like I did.

You were shot with your black Range Rover. Why did you want to get the car and fix it up the way you did? Well, red is my favorite color and I love black cars. I like to have my cars original and for them to represent my personality.

If you build your own team from past and present players who would they be and why would you choose them? I would have to pick, Penny Hardaway, Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen (he can do it all, lock up the perimeter), Kevin Garnett (plays with so much intensity) and Shaq (he is most dominant player ever). They all have or had the drive, the skill and the level of competitiveness.

What types of customizations do all your cars need to have and why? I gotta make sure that my rides all have the right rims with the red lip stripe on the them. I also like to listen

In your opinion, who are the toughest guys in the league to play against? Some of the toughest and most talented guys I’ve played against have to be Kobe, Kevin Durant and Carmelo. What city do you most look forward to playing in and why? Gotta say L.A. It’s a good feeling to play at home in front of family and friends. I also enjoy playing Miami. The atmosphere and vibe there is always good. When you’re not playing basketball, what are you usually doing? When I’m not playing basketball I like to spend time with my family during the season. I enjoy watching movies, playing video games. During the off-season I like to travel with my family. I enjoy traveling and learning about different cultures. 56 DUBMAG MAY / JUNE 2012

What types of rides best fit with your personality and why? A sedan and a sports car fit my personality. A sedan because it has a lot of space, and a sports car because it’s fast and they creep up on you. Get up on you real quick.

to music, so I have to upgrade my sound system to top level components and custom fitments. What was your dream ride as a kid and do you currently own it? If not, are you planning on getting it anytime soon? A Ferrari has been my dream ride. I plan on getting one sometime in the near future. Definitely one in this lifetime. Any future car purchases in the works? Maybe, maybe not. You gotta wait and see [laughs]. Who do you think has the sickest car game in the league and why? My teammate Z-Bo [Zach Randolph] has killer whips. They are nice!

ALL MY CARS MEAN SOMETHING DIFFERENT. THEY ALL HAVE A PIECE OF MY HEART.

T

he eye of the storm: this is where Mo Williams often finds himself. It is also a place where this point guard often thrives. Amidst the media whirlwind surrounding LeBron James’ last few years with the Cleveland Cavaliers, Mo was the team’s second leading scorer and helped guide them to two consecutive 60-win seasons, including the best record in the league in 2008-2009. Currently, Williams finds himself a part of a different kind of media frenzy; one centered around one of the most dynamic young teams in the league, the Los Angeles Clippers. As a prominent resident of the metropolis known as “Lob City,” Williams has once again proven that he can heat it up at a moment’s notice, providing the Clippers with a potent scoring punch off the bench and vying for this year’s Sixth Man of the Year award. MO’S 1972 BUICK CENTURION IS HIS PRIDE AND JOY SO WHEN HE DECIDED TO GIVE IT A FULL MAKEOVER, HE TOOK IT TO RKMC WHERE THEY TRANSFORMED IT INTO A MODERN DAY HOT ROD.

Williams has been a standout player wherever he has played the point, from the University of Alabama to his early days in the pros with the Utah Jazz and Milwaukee Bucks. But his competitive fire is often masked by his calm, cool and collected persona off the court. When DUB caught up with Mo at his secluded San Diego County residence, the 29-year-old point guard and Jackson, Mississippi native was reflecting on his burgeoning NBA career, which has taken him from his native South to the Midwest to the bright lights of L.A. He also talked about how his cars define him and mirror his character both on and off the court. How was life growing up in Mississippi, and when did you discover basketball? I grew up in Jackson’s inner city. My parents worked hard to make ends meet. I just feel blessed to have gotten drafted and retire my parents from working. I discovered basketball when I was nine. Before that, baseball was my passion. Who were your basketball heroes? My favorite player was Gary Payton. He could do it all. Score, pass, defend. I try to emulate him whenever I can.

What were your thoughts coming into the league and leaving home? I’d never been away from the South for a long period of time. I went to Utah one time and it was a shock. [There was] like 1% AfricanAmerican, but there’s a lot of good people out there. The organization really took care of me. From there it was off to Milwaukee and Cleveland. I could never get used to that snow. No disrespect to any other teams in the league, but the fan support in Cleveland is unbelievable. You’ve built up a great collection of classic American cars since coming into the league. Can you tell us more about them?

I have a ’64 Impala, a ’69 Camaro and a ’96 Impala. I also have a ’09 Challenger, which I feel is also going to be a collectible item in the future. But my 1972 Buick Centurion was the first antique, old school car I ever bought back in my rookie year. I thought it was the cleanest thing in the world until I started to educate myself and realized that it wasn’t up to par. Why does your Buick still hold special meaning for you? Well, a few years ago I had a ’69 Ford Mustang that I was getting built. As that $100,000+ job was coming to an end, I sent the old Buick down to the same shop in Dallas just to get some rims

put on. I didn’t think too much of her. Turns out the whole shop where I was getting my cars done caught on fire. The Mustang burned to pieces. But the Buick survived the fire. She got through the worst of things, and she still crunk up. So at that point, I decided to give it a full makeover and took it to RK Motors Charlotte (RKMC) Restoration shop in Mentor, Ohio. The Buick is my pride and joy. It’s a symbol of my successful NBA career, so I was very picky about who I’d let touch my car. After looking at their work on other vintage muscle cars, I knew the team at RK Motors Restoration would take good care of it. Where did your love for old school American cars come from? I love history, especially mob and mafia stories. I’ve always been intrigued by their stories. American cars are the same way. They have history. For example, the old Lincoln Continental that (President John F.) Kennedy rode in Dallas. That’s a piece of history. All my cars mean something different. They all have a piece of my heart. How did you first develop an interest in American history? I’m an old soul. I like to do old man things. I golf a lot and watch movies. I love movies. My favorites are Goodfellas, Scarface, and The Godfather. Even though it was organized crime, to hear about the loyalty and the sense of honor and respect is what grabbed my attention. What are some of your other favorite whips? I have my ’64 Impala that I purchased from 64 DUBMAG MAY / JUNE 2012

RKMC. I had them take the engine out and dropped in a LS3 Corvette motor inside it. That’s my baby. Everything that’s hidden is modern. Everything you can see from the outside is alloriginal. Last but not least is my ’09 Challenger with the 6.1 Hemi. Everything is stock except the rims and exhaust. It screams when I drive it. Your rides all seem to share that theme of being clean and fairly subtle on the exterior but having a lot of power under the hood. My cars fit my personality. They just cruise and go on their way for the most part, but they got it in them. If you want to go there, they can go. You seem like such a quiet, chill guy. How do you deal with being in the spotlight; first with LeBron, then with Blake Griffin, Chris Paul and the Clippers? I enjoy it. I just enjoy playing with young, hungry teams. Blake is going to be one of the best power forwards in this game when it’s all said and done. We got a nucleus of guys that can get the job done. What is your mindset when you have to flip the switch from being laid back and relaxed to it’s time to compete?

You just play with a chip on your shoulder. When I’m on the floor, it could be my night. I’m like my cars. If you pull up to the light on me and hit the gas a few times, I can go. We got a good team, but if someone’s hurt, someone’s sick, I got that in me to go out and have a great game. Just like my cars got it under the hood. So with all the success you have now coming from your humble beginnings, do you consciously try not to let it all change you? Well, everyone grows and evolves. This is where

some guys get in trouble. They want to stay down. They want to stay real. But you have to change and evolve as you get older. It’s not always a bad thing. Getting cocky and arrogant, that’s a part of someone’s character more than changing, and that’s not me. Is there anything else you want to share with your fans? I have The Mo Williams Foundation. Check out the website at www.mowilliams.org. We focus on helping inner city kids. We’re trying to make a difference in kids’ lives and we’d love and appreciate your support.

TEST DRIVE

THE FRESHEST RIDES: DRIVEN

2013 LEXUS GS350 F SPORT

U

nless you’ve been living in a cave for the last six months, there’s little doubt that you’ve seen the ubiquitous TV ads for the new Lexus GS, which the commercials would have us believe is a sophisticated metrosexual conveyance for racially-ambiguous, upwardly-mobile urban couples across the nation. There’s nothing like the power of marketing to reinvent an identity. The commercials are just part of Lexus’ massive campaign behind the new GS, and clearly the automaker is making a renewed effort to distill itself from the competition. In a press release, the automaker declares that the updated GS is “the first vehicle to wear the new

face of Lexus,” but don’t be surprised if you find yourself in a moment of déjà vu. With shades of styling borrowed from the LFA supercar and a faithful resemblance to its concept-car point of origin (the LF-Gh that debuted at the 2011 New York Auto Show), the redesigned GS doesn’t break as much new ground as the fanfare might imply. Regardless, the new car definitely strikes a sportier pose than its production predecessor, with a track nearly two inches wider than the prior GS, and a more aggressive front fascia dominated by chin vents and a trapezoidal grille. One hates to resort to a cliché like “all show and no go,” but to some degree, the GS drifts

WORDS: MIKE DALY PHOTOS: LEXUS

surprisingly close to the anti-metaphoric sheepin-wolf’s clothing. Case in point, as dynamically styled as the front end of the car is, the pizzazz drops off radically beyond the A-pillars to result in a pretty dreary rear end, save for a nicely sculpted sill molding under the rear doors. Likewise, the car’s standard 3.5-liter V6 packs 306 hp and 277 lb.-ft. of torque…respectable, but hardly off-the-charts impressive. Similarly competentbut-pedestrian numbers lie in the manufacturerquoted performance figures: 5.7 seconds from 0-60 mph, with a top speed of 142 mph on the track. With 3,795 lbs. of car to propel, the mid-size V6 could definitely benefit from forced induction of some kind (supercharging or turbocharging, perhaps?) to develop a little more pull. As it is, the GS 350 F Sport performance variant that I tested exhibited moments of hesitant throttle response, though when stood upon, the engine does display flashes of punch. Meanwhile, despite whichever drive mode is selected or gearshift enacted, the exhaust system rarely draws attention to itself, with a flat and barely perceptible sound that is more whir than classic exhaust note. Not necessarily what one would expect out of a car branded as a mid-size sports sedan. Lest the reader infer the impression that I absolutely hated the car, let me move on to the positives, which are considerable. As the television commercials suggest, the GS imbues exceptional elegance and luxury with its quiet leather-trimmed cabin and smooth ride quality. The heavenly driving experience is founded on a re-engineered suspension that delivers deft balance through city maneuvering, reminiscent of the finest products out of Bavaria. At the dead-center of the GS dashboard lies an almost MAY / JUNE 2012 DUBMAG 69

sanctified 12.3-inch display screen for various infotainment modes, including satellite radio, navigation, and numerous other menus, settings, and preferences, that should become an industry standard. Lexus claims the display is the industry’s first split-screen of such size, although I found myself regularly wishing it wasn’t as the computer is programmed to return to split-screen mode by default, and will put the navigation map back up within seconds of dedicated musical considerations. This questionable programming decision essentially relegates the 12.3-inch display into two 6-inch displays, leaving me to wonder, what’s the point of such a large screen if it is constantly transformed into two smaller ones?

In the display’s defense, not only is it large, but it features a dazzling color response that should be widely emulated by competitors. In tandem with the impressive screen, Lexus has devised a brand new hand-control interface dubbed the “Remote Touch” system. Evoking the experience of using a mouse and its accompanying hand-support rest, Remote Touch is a movable square pad located at comfortable arms length on the center console. Like the touch-sensitive buttons on some Blackberry phones, it can be moved to control a cursor on the screen that selects various windows in the menus, which unfortunately are laid out in a rather unintuitive way. Despite the frequently maddening illogic of the various screens and their options, the Remote Touch control interface 70 DUBMAG MAY / JUNE 2012

works rather well and definitely bears continued implementation in other models. The true lure of the GS 350 F Sport lies in its F Sport package, an option group that includes 19-inch five-spoke alloy wheels, a specially tuned adaptive variable suspension, variable gear ratio steering, 16-way adjustable sport seats, and modified body components for the front fascia and rear valances. The F Sport package’s variable gear ratio steering system delivers gliding freeway lane changes at speed, and unbelievable turning radius through slow corners and three-pointturns. The feature can be supplemented in these respects with an optional Dynamic Rear Steering feature, which variably turns the rear wheels in conjunction with, or opposite to, the front wheels

depending on speed. Make no mistake about it, this car may not be drop-dead fast, but it’s definitely light on its feet and noticeably balanced. The new GS also wows us with some neat theatrics, including the visuals of the various drive modes, which include Eco, Sport, and Sport+, in addition to a standard default mode. While the default mode and its average tuned throttle response and shift points reflect neutral colors on the dash panel, Eco mode and its gassaving re-map cast the hooded gauges in blue light. The center console-located drive select dial also summons Sport and Sport+ modes, each of which are accompanied by a special display on the right half of the center monitor. When Sport is selected, a graphic depicting a blueprint

of the car from front-quarter view shows the engine glowing red. When Sport+ is selected, the engine is joined by the shocks and the steering wheel. It’s a fun little demonstration that gives some indication of the improved feel and chassis communicativeness that these modes deliver. The shift points of the GS’ paddle-actuated six-speed sequential automatic transmission are not obviously adjusted in either of the sport modes, which is actually a good thing. Rather, the paddles can be tugged in any drive mode and the transmission will automatically switch to paddle control for reasonably smooth shifts and rev matching. Obviously this isn’t a dualclutch Bugatti, but for a luxurious sports sedan, the shift times are more than adequate, and only rarely exhibit any lurch or lag. Similarly, the handsomely stitched leather “shifter” can be popped to the left into a sequential mode that allows true, right-hand-controlled upshifts and downshifts—a much sportier experience than the paddles in many respects. Tuner enthusiasts will be glad to know that this summer, new officially licensed blue F Sport lowering springs will be available to adjust ride height and improve cornering. Strangely, though the F Sport features a sporty mesh grille and pimpin’ 19-inch wheels, it does not offer the lower fender-mounted fog lamps that are included in the base GS. If you can manage to install the fog lamps with the mesh grille on a lowered chassis, cue the salivation… Environmentally conscious buyers less keen on the sporting side of driving can take heart that the GS is also available in a hybrid version, the GS 450h, which reportedly achieves 34 mpg on the highway, comes standard with a premium option package and is even available with a Bambootrimmed steering wheel. There’s a couple of other tech touches in the GS worth mentioning, although I’m not qualified to explain how well they work because I couldn’t try them (apparently, I need to actually own the car to procure a password). The main one is the latest development of something called Lexus Enform, which is a series of downloadable apps for the GS that include Pandora (Internet radio), Open Table (dinner reservations), Bing, Yelp and 72 DUBMAG MAY / JUNE 2012

Facebook. Maybe younger, more tech-savvy generations find these kinds of frills fascinating, but I’m the type of driver that prefers my car to be more machine than computer, or at least 50/50. In that regard, the GS toes the line, for the most part, delivering a satisfying and supremely

STALLEY AMERICAN DREAMIN’

PHOTOS: KYLE DEAN REINFORD | WWW.KYLEDEANREINFORDPHOTOGRAPHY.COM

T

he American Dream is an ambiguous ethos, having a different meaning to each American. But at its core, the national mentality still measures one’s success by the amount of hard work put into their “dream.” Rapper Stalley (born Kyle Myricks) is currently in search of his “American Dream,” as he voices his journey on various tracks and mixtapes he’s been releasing in the past four years since turning his focus to music. Once a promising basketball star, an unexpected injury derailed the Ohio native’s first dream. But thankfully, a couple of friends helped him realize his path as a lyricist and urged him to take his music career seriously. In 2008, Stalley (short for his original nickname “Stallion”), hooked up with Ohio DJ Terry Urban on the mixtape release “Going Ape,” and got his first taste of touring while opening for Mos Def. His second effort, “MadStalley: The Autobiography” started to create a buzz around the rising star’s talent, but it was last year’s “Lincoln Way Nights” that really got people talking. Now, the new signee to Rick Ross’ Maybach Music Group and current Highsnobiety blogger is following up on his newfound path with his latest release “Savage Journey to the American Dream” in hopes of igniting fans with their inner American Dream at the same time. How do you define your music? Intelligent trunk music is the only way I can describe it. My music is good music, which is why I make it. I make music I want to hear because no one else makes the music I want to hear. No one are themselves nowadays and everybody is someone else. Everything in music is all made up now. People are coming out with corny music and corny raps…let’s be honest. Bad music is everywhere now—on the radio, blogs and in the streets. But what these artists do know how to do is talk about certain things that appeal to people even though it’s all made up. How has hailing from Massillon, Ohio influenced your sound? Everything I speak of is about Ohio and my upbringing, or what I’ve seen coming up in a small town. I want my fans to know that I’m an everyday dude who comes from a blue-collar city that has some instilled culture—[from] high school sports, steel factories, and the railroad and auto industries. But really, I just want people to see that they can relate to me and what I’m talking about in my music. Everyone knows someone or

98 DUBMAG MAY / JUNE 2012

has lived in this type of area, and has grown up and seen the kind of events I’ve seen in my life. Who do you look up to musically? My biggest musical influence is Nas. His music just really spoke to me and I’ve always been able to relate to what he talked about in his raps. Nas wrote about what’s true and I’ve always admired how he was able to describe his struggle and the things that he had seen throughout life. How did you get signed to Maybach Music Group? Ross had heard my music and appreciated what I was doing. He came up to me and thought I was a superstar and wanted to help me actually become that. I’m excited to have the platform that MMG provides and the opportunity to reach more people. It’s definitely a great step toward my ultimate goal. The best advice he’s given me is to just continue to do what I’m doing and keep working at being a great artist. What went into making “Savage Journey to the American Dream?” It sounds nothing like the last or any other project I’ve had in the past. I’m excited to get new music out to the fans who have listened to me from day one and those who are new to me and my music. This new project will show them who I am as a person, artist and a man, and I’m just excited to get that to the people. I want to continue to tell people to dream and keep putting out good vibes and energy. It’s considered a mixtape, but it’s really a free album. I consider them free albums because of the amount of energy and hard work I put into them. I make sure my music is classic and timeless, so it has the vibe of an album. Before you dropped the new mixtape, you released the “Songs by Me, Stalley” sessions, which was eight tracks that were provided to fans for free leading up to “Savage Journey to the American Dream.” Where did the idea for the special series come from? I spent a lot of time in the studio both writing and putting together the project and I had a lot of music just sitting there. I didn’t want to deprive my fans or let that music go to waste, so I figured why not treat them to special tracks in anticipation of the album so that they’re ready for when the project releases. It’s been a while since I put out new music and they’ve been patient with me and not pressuring me for new tracks, so I felt it was a good way to get them talking about me and the new album.

So what’s your personal take on the American Dream? I’m on a savage journey for it and it’s something I’m still struggling to define. When I was younger, my dream was to be a professional basketball player. But my dreams shifted because injuries prevented me from becoming the athlete I wanted to be. Now my goals are totally different. I’m still in pursuit of the American Dream, and one day I’ll define it, but right now I’m just doing me and hopefully, I can inspire others to take a deeper look at what they define as their American Dream and what it really means to them. What goes into making your music? I just turn on a beat and go with wherever it takes me. There’s really no one way to how I make music. I just write to a beat. I write about life, my emotions, all my relationships with people and so on. Every song doesn’t need to have a topic tied to it, but listeners will find meaning in my songs because what I write about are situations that are universal. I also talk a lot about cars because I love them and have a true appreciation for old school rides. How did that appreciation start? I got into cars at a young age and grew up around lots of older cousins and friends who used to build them. I remember waking up in the morning as a kid and seeing two to three different people under the hood of their cars, wrenching on the engine or fixing up their sound system. I’d go to the park to play basketball and then come back five hours later and they’d still be fixing their cars. I was amazed at how much time and devotion they used to spend on restoring and building their prized cars. The outcome was always beautiful with their candy paint jobs, new interiors and amazing systems. Then they’d go out and cruise the streets to show off their hard work. I also loved being able to listen to my favorite tunes while riding around the city, soaking up the energy around me. I love all the old school cars like the Camaros, Caprices, Chevelles, Barracudas and Cutlass Supremes. Those kinds of rides always inspire my music and lyrics and definitely bring back tons of good memories. Right now I have a ’68 Camaro and ’86 Monte Carlo that I’ve restored to make them as clean as possible. Although you’re still trying to define your American Dream, what would you ultimately like it to entail? I’m in music for the long haul. I hope to be the Bruce Springsteen of rap because I admire everything he stands for. Country music and rock was the first type of music I was exposed to, thanks to my grandmother, and he personifies everything Americana with his blue-collar, hardworking image even though he’s a rock star. I’d like to make music forever, living the American Dream and speaking for its people.

A

s the electronic music dance scene continues to blaze its path into the forefront of music, DJ/producer Treasure Fingers (or Ashley Jones) is carving out his own niche within the nu-disco segment. Already a well known name within the culture as a member of drum ’n bass group Evol Intent, it’s his Treasure Fingers persona that has captured the ears of notable acts like Monarchy, Theophilus London and more. A member of the eclectic roster of A-Trak’s label Fool’s Gold, Treasure Fingers is continuously busy with various remixes, tour dates and personal projects as he gears up for one insane summer in addition to hopes of dropping some much anticipated new shimmering discoinspired house tracks by the year’s end. Read on to find out why Treasure Fingers is leading the pack of the disco revival party!

TREASURE FINGERS PHOTOS: RYAN PURCELL / LEX HERNANDEZ

How did your transition from band member to DJ start? I grew up in a small town in the Midwest before moving to Atlanta, so after my band broke up (the drummer left for college and we couldn’t find anyone to fill in), I turned to DJ’ing. I then became interested in making electronic music because it was something I could do by myself without needing others to depend on. I ordered some turntables and a mixer and taught myself how to DJ. I’d go to parties and watch DJs play. I didn’t know anything about DJ’ing except that you had to match beats and cross fade a lot, but after lots of observational stints at parties and practicing on my own, I was comfortable enough with my skills after a year, and felt I was good enough to start playing in front of people. What was your first exposure to electronic music? First stuff I was exposed to was stuff like Goldie, Tricky and Portishead—left field electronic stuff since I came from a punk/hardcore rock background. Before that the only house music I would hear was commercial stuff from acts like Ace of Base, which I wasn’t exactly into. I was always into the weird stuff that had chopped off beats and brakes, crazy basslines and more, which lead me to discover filtery house and drum ’n base tunes. I’ve transitioned to playing nu-disco electronic music. The genre does have a familiar sound to it and it’s accessible to someone who isn’t deep into EDM, but for me, I really enjoy its melodies, catchy riffs, vocals and overall energy that it has. Before becoming Treasure Fingers, you were in the drum ’n bass group, Evol Intent. What’s happening with that project? We’re still together and doing live DJ shows here and there where at least two of us will show up and play together. I really didn’t make a conscious decision to do Treasure Fingers full-time and it was just something that sort of happened while in Evol Intent. Besides writing music for the group, I’d do special stuff on the side that involved more funk, house and disco and when the solo thing started to take over, it didn’t leave much room for other stuff. But the three of us actually just talked about doing a new album that’s probably going to be similar to the last one from 2008 and will have a mixture of drum and MAY / JUNE 2012 DUBMAG 101

bass and more left field, experimental dubstep stuff. But I’d never mix the two into my Treasure Fingers music. I cringe at that thought of doing that and believe it or not, I still get a lot of people who come up and ask me if I’m going to play any Evol Intent stuff in sets. Hailing from Atlanta where Southern Rap is dominant, does it influence your sound at all? I’ve always been into hip-hop, but more of the East and West coast sounds. But when I moved to Atlanta, I fully understood Southern hip-hop. I don’t really mix up hip-hop samples into my music, but I guess you can say that the bass and drums are sort of influential to my music. How did you end up signed to Fools Gold? That happened solely from a MySpace message directly from A-Trak. He had just messaged me about how he liked my music and was interested in signing me to his label. I’d obviously heard of Fools Gold because of their artists like Kid Sister and Kid Cudi. We then worked out a deal and I’ve been working with them on various things besides my own music. It’s like a big family there and everyone has their own sound and does their own thing and they’re fine with that. All the acts support each other, like I’ve produced some stuff for Kid Sister that wasn’t necessarily something I’d use for Treasure Fingers. But I also release stuff on Defected, which is more the big, traditional house label. If I make something that has a typical house vibe going on then Defected is a better label for the release, but if I do something more indie or disco sounding, then I release it on Fools Gold. How did your involvement with Scion AV start? I started working with Scion A/V by DJ’ing at some of their sponsored parties and tours. They later offered me some remix work for both, the Big Gipp and Roy Davis JR projects. Once I had “Rooftop Revival” finished, I pitched to them for their Scion A/V Video series, they went for it, produced the video and also wanted to get some remixes done and release it as a single. We don’t have anything else planned with Scion right now, but they’ve been wonderful to work with and we’ll get a new project on the books soon, hopefully. What goes into a Treasure Fingers track? Man, it varies, but ideally the best songs I’ve had start in my head ahead of time where I can visualize all of its parts, then following up with everything in the studio where it all flows and I can have a track ready in a few hours. But I have days where I wake up and go to the studio and mess with stuff for it to all come together. I’m defiantly a lone wolf type when it comes to making music, with most of my days spent by myself either at home or in the studio. But I also have a tight little group of producer friends that we share music and bounce ideas off each other. As far as a featured sound of mine on all my tracks, I don’t think I have one, but I’ve had people tell me I do. I’m not sure what it is, but I think it might be a combination of elements and the overall flow of the tracks. I always want to have a good groove behind the bassline and make sure the drums flow well together then put some sort of synth or vocal that sticks out on top. How do you approach your various remixes? Remixes are totally different to me because all I have to do is put my vision on someone else’s song. Usually I strip away everything and take elements that I like and reconstruct it in my own 102 DUBMAG MAY / JUNE 2012

eye. Remixes are easy because the hard part of creatively writing a song is over and you’re just putting your own flair to it. Collaborations are sort of the same, except either I start something and send it online to whoever I’m collaborating with or vice versa and then take it from there. But lately I’ve been picky on remixes I’ll do. If I can’t hear a good remix coming out of the song, then I’ll pass on it despite it still being a good song on its own. Out of all my remixes, my favorite is the one I did for Empire of the Sun’s “Walking On a Dream.” It’s the most popular one with fans and it just worked well all around since that song is so good and it was really easy to put my flair on it. Who would you love to do a collaboration with? I have an odd one and people think I’m crazy when I tell them, but I’d love to do something with Mariah Carey. Her vocals are amazing and I’ve been a fan of hers for a long time. I actually love R&B and taking her vocals and doing a big house record would result in an amazing collaboration I think. Are you a DJ that produces or a producer who DJs? I consider myself a producer foremost just because that’s what I did originally before I got into DJ’ing. I also definitely feel more comfortable producing rather than DJ’ing all the time. Don’t get me wrong, I still love DJ’ing because you get to test out what you’re working on in the studio, but I’m really more comfortable just being in a studio by myself. But being able to make music for a living is amazing. There are a lot of artists out there who are making a living off of music, but kind of hate what they do because they can’t make the music they would like. What sets Treasure Fingers apart from your peers? Hopefully I have a distinct sound to what I make, but I think that since I’ve DJ’d so long, I know how to balance it all out. Not to toot my own horn or anything, but I consider myself to be a good DJ. I know how to build a set, what combination of songs work well, I’m a solid producer and know how to seamlessly incorporate what I think is my own sound into everything and then translate that all into a live element when I play at clubs, festivals or raves.

What goes into your DJ sets? I play on two Pioneer CDJs with a Pioneer 800 mixer. I’m simple like that. They’re the trusty standard in DJ’ing and haven’t failed me yet. In terms of sets, I don’t play preplanned sets. I’m not sure what I’ll open with until about five minutes before I go on. But once that first song kicks in, something will ignite in my brain and the next four to five tracks will mentally just show up and I’ll know what direction I’ll take from there. If the crowd is with me then I’ll just go with it, but if I see that I’ve lost them a bit, I’ll figure out a song that will hook them back in. Usually, the crowd is with me and likes everything I play, but there are some weird markets like a Vegas hotel club, where the majority of the crowd are tourists. They’re not educated in dance music and only want to hear the commercial stuff so it’s harder to play the music I want to and I’ll have to throw in big tracks to keep them moving. For the most part, I don’t really have a problem with losing a crowd. Any advice to up and coming DJs/producers? First and foremost, just hone your craft and get the technical part down. Make sure you know how to mix everything properly and can make great sound quality tunes. After that, it’s all about mastering your own style so that you don’t get lost in the shuffle with all the other artists. What new projects are you working on? I’ve got a collaboration with Codes coming out during summer and hopefully another compilation project on Defected also dropping in summer. Other than that, I’m just doing shows and writing a bunch of tracks in hopes of dropping a new EP or LP soon. I’m just about making a sustainable career with my music where I don’t ever have to feel that I have to work. At some point, I’d also like to start some creative company that allows for fellow creative types to have a marketplace to fit our work through.

“I didn’t just want a custom truck…I wanted a one-ofa-kind custom truck that would be beyond amazing.” – Ralph Holguin

alph Holguin of RMD Group is no stranger to elaborate builds. The CEO and avid automotive enthusiast has been featured in DUB previously with his immaculate ’61 Chevy Impala called “Tiffany and Co.” that he named after one of his daughters. Addicted to the rush customizing can bring, Holguin has once again set out to create another beauty, this time opting for a ’56 Ford F-100 classic pickup truck. “I think like all men, you fall in love with trucks while growing up,” he says. “My dad had a Ford truck when I was younger, which I vividly remember. Even though this truck isn’t the same year, this build is in homage to him and the many memories I have with him.” With a ’56 Big Window Ford F-100 in mind, Holguin went off in search of his prized ride, which wasn’t exactly easy. “I actually came across one locally and attempted to buy it, but once the buyer saw how interested I was to fix it up, he didn’t want to sell it anymore. He decided to keep it and fix it up himself.” Holguin finally found the exact model he’d been looking for back in August 2011 and had his mind set on finishing it for the SEMA Show only three months later. But after realizing the extent of the build, decided he’d rather take his time to debut it at a later date. What started out as a small project ended up turning into Holguin’s biggest build to date. “I really wanted to make it very modern and clean, but at the same time still pay tribute to its era. It also needed to possess new technology and features, but not to a point where it was overdone. I didn’t just want a custom truck…I wanted a one-of-a-kind custom truck that would be beyond amazing.” MAY / JUNE 2012 DUBMAG 117

THE 1956 FORD F-100 IS BY FAR THE BEST VEHICLE RMD GARAGE HAS PUT TOGETHER, ACCORDING TO HOLGUIN, AND TOOK COUNTLESS HOURS OF MANPOWER TO GUARANTEE THAT ALL THE CUSTOM PARTS WOULD IMMACULATELY FIT ON THE CLASSIC PICKUP TRUCK.

After building his “Tiffany and Co.” Impala, Holguin knew he wanted to keep everything in-house and enlisted the artistic talents of his own crew at RMD Group. “This is by far the best vehicle we’ve put together. For the last build, we outsourced to a few different places and at the end of the day, it wasn’t finished the way we wanted it to really be. This time we were 100 percent in control of every aspect of the build, which really allowed us to exceed our goals. To begin the build, his artist Flip Samorano designed the rendering with Holguin’s help and guidance, while David Ortiz went to work on the body and custom fabrications and Felix Gomez started ordering parts. “Ortiz is a really gifted body guy. He learned everything from his father, who at 75, is still a builder in Mexico city. The chassis work was done in collaboration with a good friend at Mosco Garage. His attention to detail was a perfect fit for our team, not to mention his extensive automotive knowledge and more than 20 years of fabricating experience. It was a nobrainer for us to bring Mosco Lomas on board. I really wanted this particular build to showcase our in-house talents at RMD Group and RMD Garage to show others that we can really customize everything ourselves.” In-depth research was done to procure compatible parts, while countless hours of manpower guaranteed custom parts would immaculately fit on the classic pickup truck. The end result totally surpassed Holguin’s initial expectations and is appraised at around $248,000. As a superior example of an awardwinning modern show truck conversion, the build maintains its classic attributes from the ’50s, while demonstrating all the luxury items and comforts of a modern high-performance sport 118 DUBMAG MAY / JUNE 2012

pickup truck that include: a high performance 2012 Ford 5.0 Coyote Modular motor, 6-speed manual transmission, power front and rear disc brakes, power rack and pinion steering, air ride suspension system, a luxury red leather wrap-around upholstered interior (including a one-piece leather headliner and flooring with aluminum extrusions), power windows, solenoid operated doors as well as a sophisticated stateof-the-art keyless entry system. But Holguin’s favorite is the engine compartment and engine provided by Vaughn Gittin Jr. “My relationship with Vaughn Gittin

Jr. started a few years back when I had the opportunity to work with his team at various events, and during that time we became really good friends. He was very instrumental in helping me seek out the right drivetrain for the Ford. The whole engine compartment is actually really special and came out looking like an amazing art piece given the extent of all its customizations.” And because Holguin likes to name all of his cars, this special ’56 Ford F-100 show truck is named after his daughter Jaslene, who fell in love with it when he first brought it home. “As soon as she saw it, she asked me if that was her truck since she loved it so much.” Completely drivable (despite only being kept as a show truck), Holguin’s classic Ford truck made its grand entrance to the custom car world at the 2012 O’Reilly Grand Am National Roadster Show in Pomona this past January. There, Holguin got to see where it measured up against the competition and walked away more than satisfied and proud, winning Truck of the Year and Best of Class awards.

HOLGUIN’S FAVORITE IS THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT AND A HIGH PERFORMANCE 2012 FORD 5.0 COYOTE MODULAR MOTOR PROVIDED BY VAUGHN GITTIN JR.

Its second public viewing was at the Anaheim, CA DUB Show tour stop in March, where it won first place for both Best of Show and DUB Old School, as well as Best Shop Car. Holguin also plans on entering it in many other car shows throughout the year before gearing up for his next build that will be a ’62 Chevy Bel Air Bubbletop named Nadia. “We’re very excited to start our next project that will only bring our building skills to new heights. People are going to be blown away by what we’re going to be creating with each of our builds.” And when Holguin and his crew at RMD Group are finished with future builds, the RMD Garage will be where they’re kept. The special section of the warehouse was converted into Holguin’s personal “man cave” that houses his extensive collection of vintage finds, including cars, bicycles, motorcycles and even gas pumps! “The garage has items that I’ve always wanted growing up but couldn’t afford back then since I grew up in a rough neighborhood, where going to the store to buy a bike wasn’t the norm,” he says. “I’ve always been very passionate about the ’40s, ’50s and ’60s and the garage holds an array

His vintage bike collection is valued in the high thousands and there’s even one vintage gas pump that was appraised at being worth $10,000! Also sitting pretty in the garage is his ’67 Lincoln Continental named after his other daughter Jenny, as well as the ’56 Big Window Ford F-100 and ’61 Chevy Impala. Unlike his other custom rides, the Lincoln was left in original form. “It’s a beautiful automobile on its own and was in immaculate shape when I got it, so I left it alone. That’s a car you take out on special occasions.” Another special item in Holguin’s personal vintage museum is the 1947 flathead HarleyDavidson Police Special bike that his wife and 122 DUBMAG MAY / JUNE 2012

That specific model is very clean looking with its all-black appearance.” Despite being vintage treasures for Holguin, he thoroughly enjoys playing with all his items (except his motorcycles) and even takes out all his bikes on rides with his daughters. “Everything in the garage is meant to be enjoyed from time to time, and I have no problems taking out some of the vintage bikes with my daughters and going for a ride. And that’s including my past builds, the ’56 Ford F-100 and any other future creations.”

Tell us a little about yourself. I’m a mother first. I work hard and have an amazing family. I’m also always up for a good time. When did you first know you wanted to get tattoos? I’ve always loved tattoos and what they stand for. I remember being super young and my oldest sister would always get the cutest little tattoos. What was your first tattoo and where did you get it? My very first tattoo is a flaming heart on my lower back on my spine from Tattoo Gallery in La Puente, CA. How many tattoos do you have? I’ve never actually counted my tattoos, but I am fully sleeved and I have a few other random ones on my back legs and ribs. Do you have plans for more? Absolutely! Which tattoo is your favorite? My favorite tattoo is the portrait of my father. I never met him since my family lost him while my mother was pregnant with me. It’s my favorite because every time I’m around family, they see him and are reminded of a story about him, which I love hearing. What kind of vehicles do you like/drive? I like Phantoms, Bentleys and Range Rovers, but I drive a custom Chrysler 300 blacked-out with pink and black Asanti wheels and matching grille and embroidered Hello Kitty seats. What did you think of the ‘56 Ford F-100? That thing was a beauty and super clean! I loved the color and the wood truckbed was pretty fresh! What did you think of the RMD Garage? It’s an awesome place to take your car. It’s filled with old school cars and the raddest collections of Schwinn bicycles. They sure know what they’re doing over there and without a doubt, RMD can hook a car up and make you very happy!

ORACLE CAMAROS

WORDS: KRISTIE BERTUCCI PHOTOS: ROMAN RACELA

T

he 2009 SEMA Show proved to be the year of the Chevy Camaro as custom iterations flooded the Las Vegas Convention Center floor. It was after that show that the ORACLE Lighting/Advanced Automotive Concepts team knew they had to build their own. On their return to the Advanced Automotive Concepts’ headquarters in New Orleans, President Justin Hartenstein sought out a Camaro SS, which wasn’t easy to come by given the pre-order timeline was 4-6 months. He did, however find a base model V6, even though he was looking for a SS, and quickly began the Camaro’s transformation. “Since the base model wasn’t exactly what we wanted, we had to totally redesign the car to make 132 DUBMAG MAY / JUNE 2012

it into something that would be eye catching,” Hartenstein says. “Because it was a base model, we had that much more work in store for us to get the car up to par. We completely tore everything down and worked from the frame up. And since there wasn’t a lot of aftermarket parts around at the time, we had to fabricate most of it ourselves.” First order of business was customizing its interior, which they covered in two-tone “Inferno Orange” and black leathers from Katzkin. Next was the audio upgrade, which Advanced Audio Video in New Orleans took care of, while still incorporating some of the ORACLE lighting components. Continuing the orange theme, the team at Advanced Audio Video used orange LED

lighting strips to back-light plexiglass panels holding 3 sets of ARC Audio 6.5”components in the doors, kick-panels, and rear deck. “We developed the ORACLE Halo kit and foglight Halo kit in-shop and modeled it after what the side marker lights that were first featured on the 2008 Camaro Concept,” he adds. “The concept Camaro had some sleek, laser-like ones, while the production Camaro had some lame ones we didn’t like. We basically took that design and re-engineered it and we’ve gotten plenty of compliments on it from Camaro enthusiasts.” Another Advanced Automotive Concepts exclusive addition was the placement of the gas cap, which on the production model was placed to the side. Hartenstein and his team opted to place it where the concept had it, which was on the top of the fender. “We actually talked to GM about it and it turns out that they were going to go through with the same placement of the gas cap as the concept. But since they wanted to create a convertible version of the Camaro, that particular placement wouldn’t have worked out. We really worked on featuring things that weren’t on the production model so that it stood out from other Camaro builds. Normal guys really don’t notice these small changes, but hardcore Camaro fans really appreciate and enjoy the minor changes we did.” But Hartenstein didn’t only want the 2010 Camaro to look good. He wanted to create a beast on the streets. Since there were no turbo or supercharger kits available for the V6 Camaro at the

time, the team decided to commission Squires Turbo Systems (STS) to build a prototype remote mount turbo kit for their Camaro. According to Hartenstein, the result was more than 450 hp at 7psi of boost, which he says “would give any SS a run for its money!” This was the first ever fifth generation V6 Turbocharged Camaro to hit the streets, but STS later worked with Trifecta Performance to create a better tune and added an STS Methanol injection system. After the 2010 Camaro build was complete, Advanced Automotive Concepts wanted to take their skills one step further and decided to restore a 1969 Camaro in similar fashion. “The 2010 model was actually based off of the ’69

Camaro, so there are a lot of similarities between the two,” Hartenstein explains. “Classic cars always get people interested and so we wanted to display both of the cars together to show how they measure up to each other despite there being a 40-plus year difference.” They decided to change it up a bit, by dressing up the ’69 Camaro with “Synergy Green” accents and incorporating lots of modern touches like a big sound system and an iPad in the dash. “Even though it’s been really modernized, it still has that classic car charm that everybody loves,” Hartenstein points out. “Camaro fans really get a kick out of seeing both of the Camaros together

since it demonstrates the evolution of the Camaro through the years.” Both were shown off at the 2011 SEMA Show, but weren’t able to be displayed next to each other. The ’69 Camaro was shown off outside at the DUB EXPO! area, while the 2010 version was inside. “Although we really wanted to show them off side-by-side, people could still see that they went together. They both received a lot of attention, too, even though they reached two different demographics. Muscle car guys really loved the nostalgia vibes on the older Camaro, while the street guys loved the way the 2010 model looked.”

ack in March, DUB was invited to attend the official launch of Mister Cartoon’s Sanctiond Car Care brand. He opened the doors to his famous SA Studios compound in Downtown Los Angeles, CA, to provide attendees with an exclusive look at his legendary tattoo shop and personal car showroom, which housed several of his prized vehicles, as well as his “Sistine Chapel,” the infamous ice cream truck. The event started with guests being greeted with a lineup of lowriders, custom cars and exotics from his personal collection, D3 Cadillac and Platinum Motorsport. Cartoon then introduced guests to his new signature collection of car wash, polishes, waxes, spray detailers, interior cleaners and conditioners, and a trio of innovative tire shines. All were developed to exceed the stringent expectations of automotive painters and collectors, with each product a work of art in its own right, merging hand drawn package design with cutting-edge product formulation. Sanctiond specifically appeals to a culturally diverse population and fast growing segment of consumers, while also pioneering a unique emphasis on the subcultures that make up the Hispanic community. It is quickly being defined as the authentic car care brand birthed from Los Angeles, the epicenter of car culture. “Cars are extensions of our personalities. Our customers are committed to making their vehicles more than just their rides. Cars are part of who they are,” Cartoon explained. “I’m grateful I now have the ability to turn this passion into something everyone 146 DUBMAG MAY / JUNE 2012

can experience. By combining my love of cars, culture, and lifestyle, I’ve created a product I’m proud of.” Hands on demonstrations of some of the new products allowed guests to see the product in action. After a tour of the facility and Q&A session ended, more guests arrived to check out the festivities at a fully transformed warehouse next door that housed a small car show. On display was the Rockfod Fosgate Sound Lab experience and a few

CLEVELAND FEB 24 - MARCH 4 2012

D

UB was in on all the action at the Cleveland Auto Show that ran from Feb. 24-March 4, as the 2012 DUB Show made its debut appearance in the city. Ohio’s car culture welcomed us with open arms and a great turnout with loads of fans, local shops and car clubs that came out to support. The DUB Show Tour section was one of the busiest areas of the Cleveland Auto Show for the entire week we were there. UFC fighter Stipe Miocic was representing at the UFC booth and fans were able to snap pictures and take home autographs from the fierce competitor. Always a fan favorite, the Monster Energy Zone was the talk of the show with its world famous Monster Girls and tons of beverage samplings. The Pirelli Lounge featured all of their new tire styles in addition to all their beautiful Pirelli Girls. The Mobil 1 Performance Zone educated fans on why they’re the world’s leading synthetic motor oil brand as the Kawasaki Booth showcased some of the most kickass bikes around, including the Vulcan Vaquero and ZX10. Everybody was talking about all the new offerings at the TIS and Dropstars Wheels showcase, especially the Monster Energy Edition off-road wheels. Shout out to all those who brought out some great looking rides, including: A&R Customs, Big Boys Toys, Chrome, Finish Line, Midwest Customs, Nick Rovansek, Spade Kreations, Technicraft and Extreme Performance. Of course, none of it could have been possible without the support from our sponsors! Thank you Monster Energy, Pirelli, TIS, Dropstars, Mobil 1 and UFC for helping put on an amazing Tour stop in Cleveland!

ANAHEIM SUNDAY, MARCH 25, 2012

outhern California may be known to have some of the best weather in the country, but this wasn’t the case on Sunday, March 25th when the DUB Show Tour, aka Hurricane DUB, landed in Anaheim, CA. While the wet weather was already anticipated, the afternoon showers proved to be heavier than expected at Angel Stadium, especially after Fat Joe brought more downpour after singing “Make it Rain!” But even though the day’s festivities were cut short by the strong winds, many show goers endured the chaotic weather and remained at the show until the very end. The outdoor event had hundreds of customized cars, trucks, SUVs, bikes and more from numerous L.A. car clubs, including Swift, Nokturnal, Gzer Tribe Bike Club, Xplizit, Majestics, East LA Bikers and more, as well as various interactive booths from our sponsors. MMA fans got up close and personal with Mac Danzig at the UFC booth and then got to check out top contender Mark Munoz at the Toyo Tires booth, while Team No Limit Kawasaki performed one amazing run before having to call it quits due to the slick asphalt. But spectators were able to stop by the Kawasaki Booth to see some of the sickest bikes up close, including the Vulcan Vaquero and ZX10! The Monster Energy Zone was the place to enjoy free Monster Energy samples and scope out the gorgeous Monster Energy Girls. The Pirelli Lounge also had their fair share of beautiful models in addition to all their latest tire styles. The TIS and Dropstars Wheels Showcase was a huge hit since many wanted to see the new collection, including the exclusive new Monster Energy Edition off-road wheels. The Anaheim show also had some of the tastiest L.A. food trucks all in one place. As always, our Boost Mobile Concert series, Powered by LG was a huge hit with performances by W3 The Future, Finatticz, Menace, Wonder

Broz, Ranger$, Chi-Town Finest Breakers, Problem, TQ, Genasis, Mann, and Kia Shine. Unfortunately B.O.B and Mexican superstar Larry Hernandez didn’t get to rock the crowd due to the rain, but Fat Joe proved to be quite the closing act. He performed all his hip-hop classics, including the appropriate “Make It Rain” jam. Even though Larry Hernandez didn’t make it on stage, he did make it to the Larry Hernandez Collection booth to sign autographs, which created one of the longest autograph signing lines we’ve ever seen. Even after the show was called off, Larry stayed behind to finish signing autographs and take pictures with diehard fans in

the crazy weather. Game was even ready to make a special appearance, but had to head back to his car (which was on display). Despite the wet weather and powerful gusts, we’d like to thank all the fans, car clubs and exhibitors who came out to support us, rain or shine. We look forward to seeing many of the performers and celebrities from this show at our upcoming Los Angeles Convention Center show in August. Nothing could have been possible without our wonderful sponsors, including: Monster Energy, Boost Mobile, LG, Pirelli, UFC, Sony, Mobil 1, Kawasaki, “The DUB Magazine Project,” TIS, Dropstars, DUB Garage, Motiv, Gear and Power 106 FM.
