hen you’re destined to do great things, the universe tends to allow things to fall perfectly into place. Looking back, one may think everything happened for a reason. All of this month’s features are great examples of this. Some knew of their potential greatness right from the start, while others realized their talent and skills later in life. Mac Miller isn’t even old enough to order a pint, but he’s already a worldwide rap star living his dream. The Pittsburgh native was lucky enough to harness his talent at a much younger age and did everything in his power to turn his fantasies into real life happenings. He may have only started to take the first few steps of his life-long ascension to greatness, but the determined young superstar will definitely get there. MLB catcher Miguel Montero always had that spark of talent, but it wasn’t until a life-changing opportunity from the Arizona Diamondbacks that he realized his true potential. Now, he’s one of the sport’s top catchers and an integral part of the Diamondbacks’ clubhouse. He recently rewarded himself for all his hard work with a beautiful Ferrari 458 Italia. Vaughn Gittin Jr is a fierce drifter that doesn’t hold anything back on the track, which is probably why he’s racking up the championship trophies. Although he’s always been obsessed with everything carrelated, it took him some time to commit to drifting despite juggling it with a full-time job. When he did make the jump to become a pro, his whole life changed, and he’s now lucky enough to drift for a living, as well as launch his own special edition Ford Mustang RTR. Another huge name in motorsports is Travis Pastrana, the action sports poster boy who just so happens to be miraculously gifted in anything he sets his attention to. Having already tackled the motocross, supercross and rally racing worlds, his latest challenge is behind the wheel of his No.99 Boost Mobile Toyota Camry NASCAR beast. He had a less than satisfying NASCAR debut last year after he broke his ankle in an unfortunate motocross accident. But he’s back and ready to give it his all once again. Finally, there’s Mister Cartoon, better known for his tattooing artistry and exclusive collaborations with some of the world’s top brands. Once he discovered colored pencils, his destiny was set into motion and all he had to do was work hard enough to create his vast empire, which now includes a new car care line, Sanctiond. He shows us some of the rides that helped inspire his premium car care line, including the famed ice cream truck that he calls his “Sistine Chapel.” So there you have it. We dare you not to be full of inspiration after you close this issue. Enjoy 79!

READER FEEDBACK

HOT CARS + HOT GIRLS = WINNING!

MO MONEY, MO RIDES

You guys need to put more chicks on the cover! You’ll probably sell more magazines! The last one I remember seeing before Issue 78 was the cover with Amber Rose and that was a while back. Hot girls and hot cars go together like jeans and T-shirts - it’s a combination you can’t go wrong with! I was at the hurricane DUB stop in Anaheim and remember seeing that F-100 on display. Seeing it in person is even more impressive!

Mo Williams is the man! His classic car collection is literally a dream garage of mine. I guess I’m an old soul like him, too. There’s something about older cars that these newer models don’t have. Sure the newer ones look great, but classics never go out of style, and you can’t ever get tired of them since they bring back so many memories. I’m sure he’ll be adding a lot more to his collection to celebrate the emergence of the Lob City Clippers as one of the better teams in the league now. It’s about time, too!

H33T247 Via Email You’re right…hot girls and hot cars do make a great combo. We just might have to take you up on you’re recommendation and have more hot chicks next to our cover cars. Ralph Holguin has worked very hard to achieve the collection he currently has. Growing up with nothing to having his own man cave filled with vintage bikes and his dream cars is

Cedric M. Via Email all a result of his ability to overcome life’s hardships and really make something of himself. It goes to show that when you really want something out of life, all it takes is a dream and hard work to accomplish it!

THE GOLDEN CHARIOT

Older cars like the ones Mo Williams has do possess a quality that no new models can ever have and that’s nostalgia. Yeah, these new models will be considered classics many years in the future, but they probably

won’t be revered the same way we uphold classic cars from eras past. There’s nothing wrong with being an “old soul,” because that’s exactly the characteristic needed to appreciate such vintage rides! And regarding his collection...those were just a handful of the ones that we featured.

MAKIN’ IT RAIN I was one of the many who stood out in the pouring rain at the last DUB Show in Anaheim, watching Fat Joe do his thang. Man, that storm was crazy with those gusty winds and heavy downpour. It was cool to see that there are hardcore DUB fans that roughed it out and stayed until the very end, soaked and all! Too bad the storm killed it early ’cause I really was looking forward to checking out B.O.B. and Game! Can’t wait until the next L.A. stop in August! Carlos J. Via Email

I’m on the fence on Tyga’s gold Audi R8. It’s borderline tacky, but sometimes I think it’s dope. A car like that only really needs some wheels and tuning, especially with such an extreme makeover with the paint. I understand the desire to be different from everybody else, but that color sort of makes the R8 stand out for the wrong reasons. I’m not sure if I’d ever be that extreme with my car modifications, but to each their own, right? And that matte black addition to his drophead Phantom isn’t my taste either. Farhid M. Via Email

20 DUBMAG JULY / AUGUST 2012

When you’re a rising star like Tyga, the need to stand out amongst your peers is strong and that goes for your car collection, too. Not only does he have a unique style of rap, but like he said in the article, “a car is a reflection of who the driver is,” and Tyga is a flashy guy, with gold as his favorite color. You can’t hate on that. Besides, when you have enough cash as he does, you can easily change up your collection and the appearance of your rides in a heartbeat. So who knows, maybe he’ll grow tired of the color and opt to change it soon.

Yeah, that storm was insane! We couldn’t believe how many people actually stayed throughout the heavy down pour and that Fat Joe actually made it rain after he performed that song. We were a

FREE DUB GARAGE TOY! If we publish your letter! Write to intake@dubmagazine.com

bit disappointed that we had to end things early, but we appreciate all the car clubs, fans and our sponsors who made it a great show, nonetheless. Our L.A. stop is going to be bigger and better than ever, and we’ll definitely make it up to everybody who were inconvenienced by the rain.

ecause everybody enjoys a night out at the club, Pioneer Electronics decided it was time to bring it to you! Their exclusive MIXTRAX technology puts a new spin on one’s in-car music experience and was designed for music lovers and those nightlife lovers. The innovative proprietary technology combines Pioneer’s rich DJ heritage with their audio segment and creates a nonstop mix of an entire music library to create a club-like atmosphere. Music is taken from an iPhone/iPod or USB/ SD device and plays it back with added transitions and effects creating a virtual DJ inside select Pioneer products. The music collection is analyzed and various musical attributes, including tempo and beats per minute (BPM), are identified, which the software then tags and creates an assortment of playlists categorized in different genres and musical styles such as Beat, Chill and Thump. The software is so advanced that it then identifies the best transition points of each song that it seamlessly mixes into the next track, much like a DJ’s live performance. But that’s not all, since MIXTRAX includes illumination buttons (as well as the display of the in-car CD receivers) that pulsate and change color according to the music to create different light effects similar to what you’d experience at a party. To showcase the new MIXTRAX technology, a special demo vehicle was built by Pioneer, in collaboration with Five Axis, which debuted at the 2012 CES show. “As we started thinking about how to build a demo vehicle, we contemplated about how we really needed a rolling lounge or rolling nightclub, which was essentially the inspiration behind our MIXTRAX build,” describes Ted Cardenas, VP of Marketing, Car Electronics

Division. “We needed a large vehicle to give us that visual and sound impact so that basically led us on the path to find either a van, RV or big truck. We finally decided on the Toyota Sienna, aka The Swagger Wagon, for the base model and wanted to build something like an ultra lounge on wheels.” Not only did the “Swagger Wagon” provide enough interior room, but it also featured more aggressive exterior styling cues, with its sleek lines and factory body kit, than other models that were being considered, Cardenas adds. For the exterior, specially designed graphics by Anyone Collective were made and wrapped by Sticky Fingers Design, while the interior was fully gutted to create the club/ lounge-like atmosphere. An all white interior was created, with light effects you’d find in a dance club. “The lighting actually pulsates with the beat of the music,” Cardenas says. “We also installed a variety of Pioneer car equipment which includes five subwoofers, a multitude of amplifiers, an JULY / AUGUST 2012 DUBMAG 35

array of speakers and a MIXTRAX head unit that drives all the equipment installed in the rear of the vehicle.” There are two plush Five Axis custom designed chaise lounge chairs facing the rear of the vehicle for people to relax in and experience the sensory overload provided by the MIXTRAX system. Proper stance is completed with an AirRunner Suspension combined with a set of 20-inch FIVE:AD S5:F wheels wrapped in Yokohama S.drive 245/35R20 tires. Pioneer is no stranger to incorporating their DJ gear into some car builds, but this one stands above the rest. “All of the previous ones were more of a live DJ playing from equipment built into the car, whereas this one replicates that without the need for an actual physical DJ doing everything. It makes anyone the DJ now.” The entire build took three months to complete so that it would be ready in time for the 2012 CES show in Las Vegas. It was named one of the 10 Best Cars at the show and can now be seen at the 2012 DUB Show Tour stops. “The end result was a great success,” Cardenas says. “It sounds amazing and plays to the same levels you would find in a club, while providing that same sort of musical experience. The build really tells the story of MIXTRAX and what it is and crosses that gap between the nightclub and car experience.” The MIXTRAX technology is available in the following Pioneer products: DEH-P7400HD

CD Receiver; DEH-P8400BH CD Receiver; AVHP8400BH Audio Video Receiver; and via Pioneer’s AppRadio (SPH-DA01) iPhone Receiver. When used with the MIXTRAX iPhone App, it compares the tracks stored in the device’s music library with Pioneer’s list of analyzed music that’s

stored in its Internet services to identify musical traits. It then creates custom playlists with DJstyle effects and transitions for a nonstop mix of songs. The mix can then be played back and controlled via the Pioneer AppRadio.

t only 20 years old, Mac Miller is seriously living the dream…his dream to be exact. The rising MC from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania is causing all types of commotion in the hip-hop world. For the summer, he’s joined forces with fellow Pittsburgh rapper, Wiz Khalifa, for their “Under the Influence of Music Tour” and emerged victorious at this year’s MTV’s Woodie Awards back in March (which celebrates emerging musicians) by taking home the Woodie of the Year. These are some pretty big accomplishments for an artist who barely took his freestyling career seriously only five years ago, when he was 15. Growing up in a home that appreciated music, Mac Miller (born Malcolm McCormick) naturally drifted toward music, learning to play the piano when he was five, then picked up the drums and guitar when he was 10. “My dad plays guitar and my mom just loves music,” he tells. “She’s listens to everything from Aretha Franklin to the Talking Heads, Lauryn Hill, The Beatles… you name it, she listened to it.” But it wasn’t until he was a freshmen in high school that he began to take himself seriously as an MC, always freestyling any chance he got. “I’d freestyle for hours at a time,” he describes. “My first mixtape was at 15, too and it was f*cken hard, with me rhyming over beats for Tech N9ne, Alchemist, 9th Wonder beats and stuff.” While he can’t exactly pinpoint the moment when he realized he had a knack for spitting rhymes, he does suggest his discovery of rapper Big L’s music as an influential moment that helped direct him to his MC dreams. “I wanted to be as raw and rugged as a rapper as he was,” Miller points out. “My early sh*t is really raw if you listen to [the 2007 mixtape, But My Mackin Aint’ Easy]. If you pay close attention, you could tell that I had something in me, like, this is real talent even though it was my first joint.” Before transforming 40 DUBMAG JULY / AUGUST 2012

into the Mac Miller we know today, when he first emerged he used to go by the name EZ Mac. He was also actually part of the rap group, The Ill Spoken Word, with his friend Beedie, who was, then, four years older than him, but embraced the young MC’s talent. “Beedie was my homie’s older brother who was already established with his rhymes. He had the mic and the computer and would invite me over to rap with him. He was somebody that also took freestyling as serious as me, so we started performing together when I was 16 and formed the group. We were both just grinding hard and making raw ass hip-hop together.” Their mixtape release How High in 2008 garnered much attention from local fans, but since they were both solo artists at heart, the two had their “own journeys and different musical paths,” with Miller eventually changing his name to his current moniker and signing with Pittsburgh indie label, Rostrum Records, in 2010. “Being in a duo put a lot into perspective for me and I was grateful to have someone like 42 DUBMAG JULY / AUGUST 2012

Beedie be there with me when I first started rapping. I was able to get that positive feedback to what I was doing. It’s also kind of scary doing it on your own. I was only 15 when it all happened and really didn’t know much going in except that I really wanted to rap no matter what.” To help prepare him for the big leagues, Miller would participate in local rap cyphers with dudes who were in their 20s and 30s, who “would do nothing but rap and spit all day.” Being the young kid Miller was, he’d just sit back and observe, waiting until someone would notice he could rap. “And that’s where I’d go in and f*cken kill it,” he boasts. “I’m not gonna lie, that was like my platinum album then…going into cyphers and killing it. They’d be a number of dudes who’d go ’round, spitting their verses and then I’d go and I’d blow them away.” But Rostrum president Benjy Grinberg didn’t sign Miller overnight (despite meeting him while recording with Wiz Khalifa). It wasn’t until Miller started to work on his K.I.D.S. mixtape that Grinberg noticed a more matured Miller (and personal sound) that he knew Miller was worth the investment. But by that point, Miller’s talent had caught the

attention of several other labels, who also began to court the young MC. In the end, Miller decided to do the independent thing with the indie label instead of signing to one of the bigger names. “I still haven’t even looked into any other offers, but I know they’re there,” he acknowledges. “Really, I’m taking everything just one day at a time and right now I’m kicking it with my people. We’ll see when the time comes, though.” From then on, Miller continued to release a couple of more mixtapes (each to renowned success) before finally dropping his first LP, Blue Slide Park, in late-2011, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 with first week sales of 144,000 copies—the first independent album to do so in more than 15 years. While he geared up for a busy summer of touring, Miller made sure to leave fans with some new tunes, having recently released his latest mixtape, Macadelic, which was mostly recorded while out in L.A. “Working in Pittsburgh has this home feeling to it, but out in L.A. it’s different recording here and it sort of puts you out of your comfort zone. My music will definitely have a different vibe to it since I’m in a new

environment with all these new emotions. But no matter what, I’m always at home in the studio.” For an artist like Miller, being away from the studio too long causes a bit of anxiety, or “suffocation in [his] head,” as Miller puts it. Stating he has about 200 unreleased tracks at the moment, Miller likes to always be in the studio. “When I don’t record when I’m on tour, I go nuts and get crazy. Making music is the best therapy in the world. There’s so much bullsh*t that I have to go through everyday that the studio is the one place where none of it matters. When I’m in the studio it’s just me and the music…simplicity at its best.” With the new mixtape, Miller’s style is a bit darker than on his last release, something he says is a reflection of the emotions he goes through. “I was in a different place recording this mixtape, and it’s something that most people aren’t used to hearing from me. Usually, I’m this party-type guy that’s all about having fun. But

my real fans will know that there’s a part of me that goes deeper than that. I think it only shows that I’m growing as an artist and it’s being heard

in my music. I’m still growing and finding out what my real style is and what I’m supposed to do with music. But I’d say my style is becoming more and more like the emotions I go through at the time I’m making a certain track or mixtape. It’s a mirror of what’s happening in my life at that moment in time.” Miller’s young age and enormous talent translates into a successful career, by most standards, but he still has lots of time to come into his own and be that legendary rapper he always saw himself becoming. “I never really saw a reason why it wouldn’t happen for me,” he confidently explains. “My mentality has always been that I’m destined to make it and that I have the potential to be one of the best in music. And f*ck you for telling me otherwise. Everybody should think this way because if you tell yourself that you’re incapable of doing something, you’re not going to do it. No matter what you do in life, you should always look at life and know that you’re going to be the best at it. That someday people will write books about you. I look at my life like one day kids are going to take a whole college class on me. Everyone needs to think they’re going to be extraordinary, it’s what the world needs, and how I’m giving back to the world.”

Renowned in the world of tattoo culture for his legendary black and grey fine-line style, his skin art that graces the bodies of celebrity names like Dr. Dre, 50 Cent, Eminem, Travis Barker, Justin Timberlake, Beyoncè, Christina Aguilera, Nas, Cypress Hill , Carlos Boozer and a slew of other very impressive celebrity clients. As one of this generation’s most celebrated tattoo artists, Mister Cartoon has transcended industry boundaries to create a vast empire

After numerous requests, in which he gracefully turned down, Mister Cartoon was simply waiting for the right moment to make his DUB debut—that moment being the launch of his very own car care line, Sanctiond. “I knew not doing the features before would payoff later when I finally went through with my big automotive project, Sanctiond,” he confesses. “I wanted to really show the custom car community how much I love it and didn’t think I was good enough until now.” 54 DUBMAG JULY / AUGUST 2012

Tattooing may be his job (one that he loves), but all things automotive related is his passion. As a member of the legendary Lifestyle Car Club for the past 18 years, Mister Cartoon grew up going to car shows and used to airbrush cars for a living before picking up a tattoo machine. “If I won the lottery, I would just play with cars and design all day,” he reveals. “In figuring out how I wanted to be more involved in the car scene, I thought about how I’m obsessed with detailing my cars. I’m always going to the store and picking up various car care products and noticed there wasn’t anything really speaking

to me personally.” He then started designing various designs for his would-be product bottles and knew this would be his big contribution to car culture when he officially put everything for Sanctiond into motion two years ago. “That crazy spray bottle design started it all,” he explains. “I know people might be thinking, ‘Not another car care line,’ but, really, I’m not this 60-year-old hot rod guy that’s retired somewhere who are usually the ones all into these other lines. They’re not like me or my friends, who are young, have multiple cars in various styles and are all tatted up. We’re cool and there’s no

brand that conveyed that. I’m a car builder, too, so I know the effort that goes into building and maintaining them, from European luxury cars to old school rides.” The signature brand of premium products is a complete line that ranges from waxes, polishes, spray detailers, interior/exterior cleaners and tire dressings that each feature a uniquely designed bottle that makes them stand out from others on store shevles. “My product is made by professionals who really know their stuff, and I’ll put this product up to anything out there for a side-by-side comparison. That’s how confident

I am. It’s inspired by my love for cars, these Sanctiond products were designed to preserve them and amplify their beauty to the fullest.” Currently just a premium line of car care products, Mister Cartoon admits he plans on growing Sanctiond to include other accessories and items in the near future. “Sanctiond is more than just about car care products; it’s going to be a movement!” he asserts. “The website is already positioned to be more like a lifestyle site with exclusive video content on car builders and other cool guys. This is going to go beyond just products and really materialize into its own lifestyle.”

The Ice Cream Truck's murals are some of most intricate pieces of art ever to be seen on a vehicle that it's no wonder why Cartoon calls it his "Sistine Chapel."

To keep things OG, the 1948 Chevy Fleetmaster convertible is clean with original 15-inch wheels and Firestone white walls. Full interior, mild pinstripping, a stealth Rockford Fosgate sound system all combine to make its original appearance stand out. Lastly, the 1963 International Ice Cream truck, aka his “Sistine Chapel,” was rolled out for the cover. This one-of-a-kind rolling piece of art has been featured at select art installations and is well known in both the automotive and art worlds, but has never been fully featured. It was originally built back in the ’90s for a client, but due to various circumstances the ice cream truck was “sold and lost” for more than a decade. As luck would have it, Cartoon was made aware of its whereabouts, and he immediately went to purchase the unfinished vintage ice cream truck. To his surprise, it was in excellent condition where it had been stored. Its vast surface provided the multi-talented artist the opportunity to hand paint his own masterpiece with lettering, symbols, portraits and landscapes from the deepest parts of his subconscious—complete with a jack-in-the-box head that pops from its roof top. “It’s like my own version of Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory meets the ’hood. Even though it was initially built a while back, I’ve updated a few things and added a Rockford Fosgate audio system, some suede headlining, hand-molded dash, and a set of 72 spoke wire wheels. mods I want to do.” It was actually included in last year’s “Art in the Streets” exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, which was a show dedicated to the art of graffiti and its lifestyle. The show provided the accomplished tattoo artist a chance to show off his love for cars in addition to taking him back to his graffiti roots, which is where his story all starts. “My first tool was a spray can. I used to be a little vandal and

write on people’s homes and wasn’t thinking about the repercussions. It’s a selfish art in a way, but it allowed me to move on to bigger walls where I was eventually painting murals. By the time I was 16, I learned how to airbrush cars and started doing apparel, too. By 23, I was already working at different magazines as an illustrator and did a mural on Larry Flint’s limo.” Being heavily immersed in the art world, tattooing was a natural progression after he

“All that matters is that I’m remembered for being original, having my own look and touching lives, regardless of what medium was used.” noticed how some of his “homeboys” were getting crooked and shoddy tattoos. “The guys who had the good art had been to the joint and I didn’t want to go to that tattoo shop,” he says. “So I started to draw tattoo patterns and got into the whole vibe. I used to tattoo my homies in the kitchen with a handmade tattoo gun. When it came time for me to learn, it was difficult to gain knowledge with no university or institution to teach me. It was a huge handicap for me being a professional artist since everyone thought it was above the craft. But I paid my dues like everybody else, learned from my mistakes and was able to get to where I’m now, with my signature style.” After years on the grind and building his name, Cartoon credits his burst into international fame after he tattooed Eminem. From then on, he’s had a non-stop waiting list and his figure from tattoo artist evolved into a brand, with everybody knocking at his door for special collaborations. But he doesn’t just put his name on anything these days, mentioning how picky he is with whom he collaborates with these days. “The company has to be on the same path I’m on, and I really have to like their product, too,” he explains. “Man, I turn down so many things that really bring in big money, but it’s not just about the checks. It’s about the essence of what both companies are putting out

there, which is why a lot of the things I do are made in such limited quantities.” Naming Nike and Vans as two of his most beloved collaborations to date since he grew up wearing both shoe brands, it’s this new business venture with his car care line that the jack of all trades businessman/artist is hoping will open the doors to more car-related projects. “I’ve done a lot in my life, but I’d love to one day design an official production car of some sort. That would be a huge achievement.” Besides working with an official automaker, he also adds venturing out to work with other huge companies like Apple and Louis Vuitton as brands on his “wish list.” From one car lover to another, Mister Cartoon no doubt knows his stuff, which is what will make Sanctiond just as successful as all the other entries in his diversified business portfolio. He’s already mastered the ink world, perfected the formula on making the most coveted collaborations and will now make an impression in the car care industry. But in the end he doesn’t care about how he’s remembered in each segment. “All that matters is that I’m remembered for being original, having my own look and touching lives, regardless of what medium was used.”

to the playoffs, as well as support his team (or “family” as he calls them) with anything they need on or off the field. “I don’t think about things too much and just play hard no matter what. Because when you do that the rest just seems to follow suit. It’s going to be a good year for us and I’m mentally and physically prepared to make us a leading contender in the playoffs.” Montero has been more than just a catcher for the Diamondbacks, but an integral part of the team and its morale. He’s been described as being pretty vocal in the clubhouse and always having a great energy and vibe for keeping things relaxed, something he says is a necessity in the

aseball may be America’s pastime, but it’s what many Latin American countries thrive on (besides soccer, of course). Growing up in Caracas, Venezuela, baseball was a way of life for Arizona Diamondbacks catcher Miguel Montero. “Baseball is huge in Venezuela and it’s like the national sport similar to what football is here in the States, “ he describes. “I’ve been playing baseball since I could remember since it was all we ever did for fun growing up. I liked it a lot and would always make sure to practice as much as I could, but I never really thought I was good enough to play professionally.” That was until the Diamondbacks signed him in 2001 and gave him the opportunity of a lifetime. “They were the only team who saw my potential when I was 17, and I’m grateful for them. No one else was willing to give me the same opportunity. I’m so lucky to have had them sign me and to this day allows me to have fun out on the field as my job.” After a couple of years in

the minor leagues, Montero proved he was ready for the big leagues thanks to his ability to hit for average and power, hitting .307 with 43 home runs in 2005 and 2006. He finally made his major league debut on September 6, 2006 against the Florida Marlins, a day he’d never forget. “The minor leagues taught me a lot about the league and helped me perfect my skills so that I could transition to the big leagues,” he says. “I was only 18 and had a lot of maturing to do, but it was a great experience. But nothing compares to the day I made my MLB debut. Everything that I had worked hard for finally came together and my dreams were finally coming true. All the fans and the excitement was truly a memorable experience that I’ll never forget.” Since then, he’s made it a goal to be the best catcher to his ability and is widely regarded as one of the top offensive catchers in the game today. For this 2012 MLB season, Montero is looking to play as hard as ever to help get the Diamondbacks

game. “You have to always keep it fun or else you think about stuff too much and that can get you in trouble on the field. Yeah it’s a job, but you have to make it fun,” he admits. “I’m a pretty relaxed person, so I guess it just rubs off of me in the clubhouse. But I’m also a bit of a jokester and like to play around with the guys.” His relaxed demeanor, yet fun mentality is also reflected in his current stable, which includes a Range Rover, Lincoln Navigator and his most current toy, a Ferrari 458 Italia that was dressed up by MC Customs in Miami, FL. “The Navigator best reflects my style since it’s a pretty laid back car, but the Ferrari is something I’ve always wanted since I was a boy. It was my dream car and I never thought I could afford such a lavish purchase, but I figured I deserved it after working so hard all these years.” He again enlisted the aid of Jhulio Tadeo and MC Customs after they went above and beyond to customize his Navigator to his specifications. They were the only ones he

THE FRESHEST RIDES: DRIVEN

2012 MERCEDES-BENZ SLS AMG ROADSTER

WORDS: MIKE DALY PHOTOS: VIKTER FUENTEZ

T

here’s no denying that Mercedes-Benz has always been one of the “phattest” car companies around. But for recent decades of entertainers and athletes, the most popular rolling bling out of Stuttgart has generally been on the fat side. CLs, G-Wagons, and Maybachs, of course, have been the name of the game, whether it be the rap game, or a ball game (be it round or oblong). The less gargantuan, but sportier SL convertibles, on the other hand, have gotten little love since the days of “Magnum P.I.,” a lamentable reality that now figures to definitively change with the arrival of AMG’s new open-top supercar. Admittedly, the new SLS AMG Roadster that is the subject of this review is not exactly an SL convertible, but more properly the open-

top version of the recent SLS Gullwing supercar, which Mercedes understandably considers a separate entity in terms of model designation. The SLS Roadster does, nevertheless, share the same DNA as the SL-Class, as both are, at the very least, conceptually derived from the iconic 300 SL Gullwing of the 1950s, and the concurrent SLR racecar. The old school Gullwing was similarly joined by a companion 300 SL Roadster shortly after its debut, and that open-top car is the true antecedent of the jaw-dropping SLS AMG Roadster that Santa Claus piloted last winter during a series of Christmas-season television ads. No one will be surprised to learn that I have never driven a flying sleigh drawn by nine magical reindeer. I did, however, get a week behind the wheel of the SLS

Roadster, and it’s hard for me to believe that the mythical sleigh could possibly compare. Though it’s often difficult for me to find true deficiencies with the premium-segment cars I’m lucky enough to cover, the SLS Roadster is a particularly flawless example of automotive engineering. Patiently indulge me, if you will, while I list the car’s faults: 1. there’s a bit of a blindspot when the top is up (which Mercedes addresses with a standard-equipped blind-spot warning system); 2. it’s a little difficult to get in and out of during certain parking scenarios if the top is up; 3. the back-up camera display does not automatically activate in reverse unless the navi screen is already powered on. That’s it… Three issues—a pretty short list of very marginal negatives. It may be irresponsible of me to write, but the AMG-designed SLS Roadster is a damn-near perfect sports car, with prodigious acceleration and braking, effortless handling with connected steering, gorgeous exterior design, impressive build quality and an impeccable pedigree. And to boot, the top goes down. As with the SLS Gullwing, the heart of the Roadster lies in a new-generation naturallyaspirated 6.3-liter V8 that is designated the “M159.” Mercedes claims it is “one of the world’s most powerful naturally aspirated V8s in production,” and a demonstration of the car certainly does nothing to dispel that notion. Generating 563 horsepower and 479 lb.-ft. of torque, the M159 is mounted roughly a foot behind the front axle, improving the car’s overall balance. This placement, in combination with a rear-mounted 7-speed dual-clutch transaxle, contributes to a front-to-rear weight distribution of 47:53—an ideal ratio that clearly contributes to the car’s superior handling. A dry-sump lubrication system eliminates the need for a JULY / AUGUST 2012 DUBMAG 75

traditional oil pan, allowing Mercedes to place the engine unusually low for improved center of gravity. The result is a chassis that is physically situated for optimal handling even before one iota of suspension tuning or springing has been implemented, which both have, incidentally, been done in spades. With four different adjustable transmission modes and three different suspension settings available, the SLS AMG Roadster hits 60 mph in 3.7 seconds and peaks at an electronically limited 197 mph, attention-getting numbers that are no less impressive in person. Typical of Mercedes’ legendary build quality, the Roadster rumbles north of 100 mph with the sure-footedness of a tank, while effortlessly sliding through freeway connection ramps at 80 mph. Rumble is the key

word, here, as the exhaust system allows the M159’s eight cylinders to bellow with extreme zeal, snorting constantly and coughing emphatically when the accelerator is released. Most sports cars in this segment will show some balls when specifically summoned, usually with a baffle system or a sports exhaust of some kind that engages at a designated rpm. The SLS gives you the business at all times, regardless of settings, and there’s a welcome purity to that concept. There’s no leaving your driveway

76 DUBMAG JULY / AUGUST 2012

unnoticed in this car. Of course, when you ratchet up the transmission/engine control dial from Comfort to Sport, the motor takes on an even nastier tone, particularly so when the dial is twisted one more setting to Sport Plus. A further twist engages a manual, paddle-only mode, which features an awesome LED shift-prompter housed in the center instrument panel that provides a Formula 1-style shifting experience. Leave it in Sport Plus and

engage the Sport Handling mode with the press of a button and a Racing Start function is enabled that allows the car to optimally blast off with proper torque distribution minus any inefficient tire burnout—a great gizmo to try on the pristine surface of a track, but less ideal for imperfectly surfaced roads, as my fishtailing gravel-spew of a launch attempt attested. It should be noted that the SLS features a true F1-style dual-clutch configuration that aficionados of such cars will know well. For the uninitiated, one clutch engages odd-numbered gears while the second clutch engages even-numbered gears, leaving each clutch to independently prepare for whatever sequential gearshift might occur next, a system that has been proven in racing to deliver the

quickest automatic shifts available. Stock-in-trade for companies like Ferrari and Bugatti, the dualclutch set-up lends the SLS the kind of motorsports gravitas that eludes thinly disguised and inferior shifting systems found in some competitors. With the top down, the roadster offers a true nirvana of a driving experience, with unfettered visibility, a high-waisted enveloping windowsill that cocoons passengers, and a surprisingly effective Airscarf system that blows warm air onto occupants’ necks from a vent in the headrests. In combination with seat warmers and a strong climate control system, the Airscarf provides magical and comfortable drives with the top down in colder temperatures. Though the three-layer power soft top offers exceptional insulation from the outside environment when raised, taller drivers should 78 DUBMAG JULY / AUGUST 2012

beware. For quarterbacks and point guards, that is, the Roadster’s snug fit is like a batting glove, a comfortable fit that isn’t merely ideal for the job, but rather feels like an extension of oneself. Unfortunately, lineman and power forwards will likely not agree, as drivers much taller than 6’ 3” face an imminent close encounter with the soft top’s low ceiling. Though the SLS Roadster actually starts at less than $200K (and this is probably the only time I’ll ever suggest that such an MSRP is a relative bargain), the DUB crowd will be particularly interested to know that all sorts of carbon fiber trim packages are available to trick-out this

menacing speed machine to the max, and take the MSRP well above $220 large. My test car featured two such trim packages that cost $4,500 each, as well as a $5,400 carbon fiber engine compartment cover package that not only clarifies the car’s seriousness of intent, but makes the SLS almost as pretty to look at with the hood open. Throw in an optional 11-speaker, dual-subwoofer, 1,000-watt Bang & Olufsen sound system that was designed specifically for this car (another $6,400) and you have a Benz worthy of the flashiest spitters and long-ball hitters. And believe me, this one will leave those CLs and G-Wagons in the dust while turning way more heads.

W

hen a song reaches the masses, no one really stops to sit and think about all the people that worked on the track and instead focuses on the artist who dropped it. But it’s the beat makers, aka producers, that help make a dope track a hit. Dnyc3 (pronounced D-nice) is one such behind the scenes player in the music industry responsible for some of today’s hot tracks from the likes of Tyga, Problem and more. The rising 25-year-old (born Donte Blacksher) from Compton, CA has been producing music for more than 10 years. “I remember being 12 years old and freestyling all the time,” he recalls. “I loved everything about hip-hop and started out as a rapper actually. Just being involved in the music gave me a feeling I never felt before. Like whenever I heard Biggie or 2Pac, I’d get this amazing feeling that I just had to be apart of the music somehow.” Not much later, he soon discovered beat making after growing tired of rapping over others’ beats. But after doing both for a while, he realized how hard it was to make it as an artist due to the fierce competition in the industry 104 DUBMAG JULY / AUGUST 2012

and decided it was time to purely focus on his production. It wasn’t until he started to receive positive feedback on his music that he decided to turn his music-making hobby into a full-fledged career. “I didn’t really think anything of my music,” he confesses. “It wasn’t until people were digging my beats that I realized my music was being heard and actually being liked. That really motivated me to take it seriously and really push myself to get my name out there. I’d send my beats to different people and artists I knew in the industry and after all the good feedback was coming in, I knew that rapping wasn’t my future and gave it up for good.” Unlike other struggling producers who have to overcome many trials and tribulations to finally land that big break, Dnyc3 had a fairly easy route to success since he already had the right connections in the music industry. “It wasn’t hard to get the artists I knew to listen to my beats,” he says. “But when the jerk movement happened, that’s when I met a lot of different artists like YG and all those involved in the jerk movement. I also knew Tyga before he was big. My cousin

went to high school with him and would mess around freestyling with him and stuff.” But it wasn’t until Dnyc3 became a member of the West Coast production crew League of Starz that he really started to get his name around to bigger artists like Snoop, Too $hort and E-40. “My now manager Pun reached out to me on Twitter, telling me about how he was going to start a new movement with the League of Starz and if I’d like to be a part of it. He then went on to tell me how he’d be able to help me get my music to bigger artists. I was already doing everything myself to get my beats out there, so I figured it would save me the work and I could purely focus on my production. Since I joined, everything picked up for me and I’m now working with many different artists. But the best part is that they’re now reaching out to me.” Despite being part of a network of producers, Dnyc3 still prefers to make beats on his own, which he then later shares with the rest of the League of Starz crew for refinement and ideas. “There’s no real long creative process for me,” he admits. “I just start working and a beat comes out. All I need is a loud stereo and my production software and I can bang one out in no time. There’s nothing really special about it.” Dnyc3 may still be a newcomer to the industry, but he already has a reputable catalogue of tracks he’s produced. His most current hit song is Tyga’s “Faded” and “Bitch Betta Have My Money,” but other notable tracks include “Make Ya Girl” by The Ranger$, with upcoming projects including a mixtape for Problem, a new Kurupt single called “Hoodrat,” some more E-40 work, a track with Snoop and more songs for Tyga’s next mixtape. Thus far, Dnyc3’s best project was getting to work with Lil Wayne on Tyga’s “Faded” track. “When I took producing serious, one of my goals was to get Lil Wayne to rap over one of my beats ’cause he’s my No. 1 artist of all time and biggest inspiration.” He also credits The Neptunes, Dr. Dre, Rick Rock and many other Southern producers as inspiration because “heavy bass” is his favorite musical element to use. But just because he’s currently a hip-hop producer, doesn’t mean he doesn’t dabble in other genres. “I like a lot of different styles of music and listen to rock, rap, pop, R&B and more and even have a few different pop/dance beats I’d like to put out in the future.” Now that he’s worked with Lil Wayne, his next goal is to get some tracks sent to Jay-Z and Kanye as he continues to perfect his production skills with League of Starz and expand his catalogue of beats. “Of course, I want to get a platinum single and be known as a powerhouse producer,” he says of his future goals. “But, really, I just want to work with as many artists as I possibly can and help spread good music to the world. Whether it’s in hip-hop or some other genre I eventually start working in.”

He then landed an A&R gig as Rick Rubin’s “Techno Boy” at Def American Recordings, while still launching L.A. hotspots like The Downtown Standard Hotel at night. After the music industry started to shift, Richards decided it was time to return to his promoting roots and started the very first HARD Festival in 2007. Since then he’s created a massive brand in the EDM scene, while creating a name for himself within the DJ world as Destructo. He’s shared the stage with the likes of Rusko, Diplo, A-Trak, Fatboy Slim, Deadmau5, Skrillex, Steve Aoki and many more EDM heavy hitters.

Was it hard for you to make the transition from vinyl to digital? When I first started out as a digital DJ, I started on Ableton DJ equipment. I’ve since then switched to Pioneer CDJs, which is pretty fun. But vinyl is still the best, and I sometimes still do vinyl old school house vibe sets. But the bad thing is that I can’t play any of my new songs ’cause they’re not on records. Pioneer CDJ2000s is what I like to use because I don’t need to lug around all sorts of crap like CDs, cables, computers or anything except my little flash drive that holds all my music that I’m going to play. Did you always play electronic music? Pretty much. But before I got totally into techno, I did play some hip-hop stuff. I call what I play techno, even though it might not be the typical techno sound. I call it that because it’s essentially made with technology, but I just call my music the good kind. I guess if you had to put it in a genre, it would be house or disco or something like that. My theory is just to always keep it funky and if I do that, it’s always going to be good music. How did you become “Destructo?” I used to be the king of wild and would blow up sound systems when I first started. Some of the parties I did would start at 6am, so my goal was

PHOTOS: ERIK VOAK

to find the hardest techno I could find to keep people awake. Plus my DJ’ing skills at the time weren’t the best so my sets would be all over the place, and I’d even mix in a bit of metal here and there. I guess that all went hand in hand in how I ended up with “Destructo” as my DJ name. Now I sort of wish I picked a different name because people think I’m going to play a certain type of music, but then I get on the decks and I play something totally different than what my name implies. This one time, I got booked to do a party with will.i.am and the guys who booked me were too scared to put me close to his performance times so they made me play first. They thought I was going to play really hard music that wouldn’t blend with what will.i.am would be performing, but once I got on, I started paying all this funk and disco stuff. The crowd liked it so much that I was asked to play all the way up until his performance. The name can be misleading, but at the end of it all, my only goal as a DJ is to make people dance. How has the role of the DJ changed since first starting out? It’s completely changed. When I first started, it wasn’t about the DJ but more about the music. The DJ was in the back of a venue in a booth and it was more about the dance floor and getting the place cracking. Nowadays, DJs are now trying to one up each other and they’re treated like rockstars, are on the cover of magazines and are recognized by their fans anywhere they go. Back

When did your love affair for DJ’ing come about? In the early ’90s, I used to go to a lot of clubs and would always like the music. There was this one record I liked and didn’t know the name, so I called the record store and some DJ answered. I hummed him the song and then rolled down there to get the record. He then introduced me to some other records, which I also bought, but then I realized that I didn’t have any turntables. That’s when I went out and bought all the equipment to play them on. What came first, DJ’ing or promoting? They came at the same time I think. I started out as a promoter and the first club I ever promoted needed a DJ, so I just did it myself since I had those vinyl records lying around. I was basically selftaught, but didn’t really know what I was doing. Then I started to promote this one club and one of my friends came and asked for a trade. If I let him DJ at the club he’d show me what’s up. I played on vinyl for a long time, which was definitely not JULY / AUGUST 2012 DUBMAG 107

in the days, it was an underground thing and DJs weren’t worried about people checking them out and they only cared about their music. What event/moment really helped launch your DJ career to where it’s now? I can’t really pinpoint the exact moment and believe it’s a collection of things. For sure one of the biggest moments early in my career was when I played a show in Vegas in the late’90s and packed 2,000 people into a club with everybody going nuts. I also promoted a lot of good shows and was lucky enough to have myself on the bill. But I never wanted to be one of those guys who would promote myself playing rather than any of the other DJs just because I was the promoter. Even with my HARD events, I always like to open or be at the beginning of the lineup and help set the mood. Given you’ve refined your skills, will you ever headline a HARD event? You know, I don’t know. With HARD, I want to try and get away from performing and just DJ other events just because there is so much work to do, and I kind of feel that it’s unfair to the other DJs on the lineup. If they need something or if anything goes wrong that needs my attention, I’m not available because I’m on stage. The smaller HARD events I have no problem doing, but it’s those huge ones that I’m going to focus more on the event side of things instead of DJ’ing. Plus, I want to start playing more events like Coachella, where I go and have fun and don’t have to deal with all the bullsh*t. How did your HARD events originate? They started because after being in the record business for a long time, I realized no one was really buying CDs or music the traditional way and I still wanted to be a part of the industry in some way or another. I figured I’d try out producing events and sell tickets because no matter what, people still wanted to go to concerts. The name came about pretty randomly. For the first one, we had a really lame name for it and my friend [Steve] Aoki told me he’d play the event but asked if we could do something about the name. I asked him if he had any suggestions and he came up with “Hard On” for the name. I thought about it and it sounded like a porn site or something so I just went with “HARD” and the name stuck. There are so many EDM festivals these days, how does HARD stand out from the others? I do all the bookings myself and I just book the acts on what I like and what I think is cool. I don’t base it on selling tickets. Other people want to sell tickets and book the big names like Tiesto and Afrojack. Our way of doing it is a lot harder to get the numbers, but we’ve been successful. It’s also built on trust with the acts we book and our fans. People that come to our events are more open-minded and come because they’re fans of the music and not just on the bandwagon. I make sure it’s all about the music and the artistry of the people making it. I’d rather have a smaller event, but have everybody who’s there be true fans of the acts performing. Another thing is that the acts don’t just see me backstage running things, they see me performing on stage like them. It’s amazing to come off a set and then be given a high five from the likes of Skrillex because they see me as one of them. I understand their world better since I’m on the same boat as a performer. I know what it’s like to 108 DUBMAG JULY / AUGUST 2012

“IN THE END, I JUST WANT TO BE KNOWN FOR BEING THAT GUY WHO PROVIDED PEOPLE A GOOD TIME, WHETHER IT WAS ME DJ’ING OR PRODUCING AN EVENT…AND I THINK I’M DOING A GOOD JOB AT IT SO FAR!” show up at an event and have all the equipment set up the wrong way or whatever, and other event producers don’t know this. One of the most inspiring things to me as a DJ is to have my peers respect me and know me not just as a promoter, but as a DJ like them. What’s the future of HARD? It’s really evolved 100 million percent since I first started. In the beginning I had no idea what I was doing, but now I have got it down to a successful system and have built an amazing team that helps out with everything. We expanded it to include Holy Ship this year, an EDM cruise and we’ll have it again next year. We also expanded our summer L.A. festival to two days and will be venturing into Canada this year, in addition to continuing our HARD tour in the US. We’ll also be going to Australia as part of the Stereotonics festival. You recently released your first EP, Technology. What went into its creation? A lot of nights at the studio and a lot of years of listening to various types of music. I met these producers called OLIVER and they’re amazing. We connected right away and started working on random things, but it was never serious. Once the first song, “Technology,” started getting good reviews, we figured we should make an EP. I then made it a goal to make it to the studio at least once a week and really threw myself into the production. This was the first time I officially produced something even though I’ve dabbled in it over the years. I definitely have a vision of what I want my production to sound like and it always has to be something I’d personally play. I’ve been getting more into producing ever since I started really taking my DJ’ing seriously and am focused

on making the time to do a lot more of it. I really should have done it a long time ago. What do you like doing better: DJ’ing creating the HARD events or producing your own music and why? I think DJ’ing will always be my favorite because it’s so much fun to be in front of an audience. I really feel at home. The studio is second and it’s something I have to really work more on. I’m not at the level I want to be at. I have the ear, but can’t do it on my own and need help with the equipment. HARD is what I do and it’s real work. DJ’ing is how I escape work. Where does Gary Richards end and Destructo begin? Destructo begins when I have a gig, other than that I’m not walking around like Destructo. I’m just Gary who was born on New Year’s Eve. In the end, I just want to be known for being that guy who provided people a good time, whether it was me DJ’ing or producing an event…and I think I’m doing a good job at it so far!

TRAVIS PASTRANA NOT AFRAID TO FAIL

WORDS: KRISTIE BERTUCCI PHOTOS: BRANDON BURRELL

T

ravis Pastrana is the poster boy of action sports, excelling at everything he does— whether it’s motocross, supercross, freestyle motocross or rally racing. No matter what he does, Pastrana always seems to come out on top, making one wonder if he’s just one of those guys who’s naturally gifted at everything or if he’s perfected his skills over the years with lots of hard work and determination to add more achievements in his on-going list for his brag book. Actually, it’s neither. “I think the biggest quality I have is that I’m not afraid to fail or care if I look like an idiot trying something,” the 28-year-old Pastrana admits, as he lets out a small laugh. “If everyone is better than me at the track, then alright, game on. It’s okay because by the end, ‘I’ll beat all of you guys,’ is my mentality. A lot of the time it doesn’t happen, but being over enthusiastic and under prepared has been the motto of my life and so far it’s worked out fine.” It’s with that no fear attitude that Pastrana has been able to rack up trophies as the 2000 AMA Motocross 125cc Champion and the 2001 East Coast Supercross 125cc Champion, in addition to boasting 11 X Games gold medals for events like MotoX Freestyle, MotoX Best Trick, Speed and Style and Rally Car Racing. Not to mention various victories at rally car events since he started his rally racing career in 2003. The way his entire career panned out, it might seem that the overachieving Pastrana always planned to have a multi-action sports career, but it’s really just a result of his ambitious nature mixed in with a bit of ADHD.

“I’m not sure if I found action sports or if action sports found me,” he laughs. “All my uncles were into riding, jumping off stuff and just all about having fun with everything they did. I found out I was a daredevil at a very young age, which was a good thing for my career. As a kid, I was so ADHD and was always doing something. And since I liked every motorsport, it was just something that evolved over the years, but being involved in so many things was never something planned out. Whenever I was hurt because of motocross, I’d jump into a go-kart, which led to my interest in rally racing.” Growing up as the runt of his family, Pastrana admits that he was the least athletic and would actually get beat up a lot. “But every time I’d get knocked down, I’d get right back up. I think that’s an asset now because as an action sports athlete, when you get knocked down, you get back up fighting harder.” Because of his tremendous ability to “fight,” Pastrana’s competitive nature has now led him on a new career path as a NASCAR driver. Already familiar with what it feels like racing on four wheels because of his six-year stint in Rally America, he figured it was time to try his hand at what he considers to be “the most competitive

After a disappointing NASCAR debut last year, Pastrana looks forward to making a huge impression in this year’s season.

motorsport “ in the U.S. According to Pastrana, rally didn’t have the competitive edge he craves since it required you to race against the clock, with no “head-on” competition. “I wanted to go up against the best and see how I’d do,” he describes. “Many may think it seems so easy given there’s only two turns, but it’s really a complex sport where you have to always be on your mark, as well as your team and crew. Everyone has to work together since it’s a complex system.” Being a team player is still something Pastrana’s adjusting to, admitting how much he “hated team sports in X Games,” but learned to deal with it once he became involved in rally racing and gained a co-driver. Pastrana’s decision to pursue NASCAR came in 2011 when he partnered with NASCAR team owner Michael Waltrip to form Pastrana-Waltrip Racing. His debut race was the Toyota All-Star Showdown, where he finished sixth. “It was a great experience,” he describes. “I liked how I was able to get more time on the course since it’s usually you show up, get a couple of practice laps and then it’s time for the qualifying race. NASCAR actually thought I’d get bored with the sport, but damn, I was tense and sweating with the first race, and anything but bored. I had a hard grip on the steering wheel the entire time.”

After his first race, he then had plans to compete in the 2011 Nationwide Series, until he hit a personal roadblock. Amped up for his first season in NASCAR, everything went south when he broke his ankle at last year’s X Games, which put him out for the rest of the year. Although he’s sustained multiple injuries throughout his career, his broken ankle was one of his worst to date—not only physically, but also emotionally. “Last year was one of the hardest moments of my life. As part-owner of the racing team, I had a whole bunch of guys working for me who I had to let go because I wasn’t racing anymore. I messed everything up and let my sponsors and my crew down. That’s something I don’t ever want to do again. I was an idiot and choked under pressure and didn’t land that stupid 720 trick on the bike. But despite it all, everybody is still behind me and I’m grateful for that. You don’t get many second chances and I’m going to take it and run with it.” He’s back this year more focused than ever on becoming the best NASCAR driver he can be and going into each race looking to win despite having misgivings from some about his transition. “I’ve never been criticized so much in my life for switching to this sport. But what people don’t understand is that it’s all about the competition

for me and NASCAR is very competitive. I want to get to the top of that sport and it’s going to be a hell of a ride…I hope [laughs].” But his diehard fans have already jumped on his NASCAR bandwagon and now cheer him on at races, as they did at motocross and rally events—with NASCAR officials elated that he’s bringing in a totally new audience to the sport. Like in his other feats, getting to the top shouldn’t be hard for Pastrana, who admits that NASCAR has a lot of similarities to motocross, especially how one doesn’t have to worry about how much faster they’re going than everyone. “All you have to do is figure out a way to beat your competition to the finish line and that’s what I’m concentrating on.” But there is one issue with NASCAR that Pastrana is still wrapping his head around. It’s the comradery of the sport; something that he’s never experienced while competing in motocross. “I’m a bit confused by how nice everybody has been,” he laughs. “I think the other racers are being genuine, but maybe it’s until our first race when they push me up against the wall. You’re not usually as nice to your competition in motocross.” Pastrana is still enjoying how nice everyone has been (so far) and on April 27, 2012, he made his Nationwide series debut, finishing 22nd at the Richmond 250; not bad for someone still learning the ropes. He’s learning to speak the lingo with the team and adjusting to how to properly drive with precision in mind. Because he’s always “overconfident,” Pastrana knows he’s going to be a fierce competitor in NASCAR. “It’s going to be hard man, real hard,” he confesses, adding that 128 DUBMAG JULY / AUGUST 2012

Pastrana may have been a lone ranger while in motorcross, but he’s quickly adapting to being a team player with his NASCAR crew.

he’s used to being the reckless guy who crashes everything. “I have to really discipline myself and practice some restraint to get my precision driving down.” This season, he’s scheduled for seven Nationwide events and his performance will be watched closely as he pushes himself to be the best at yet another sport. He believes he can achieve top-10 finishes by next year and come in at first place by 2014, with the goal to eventually secure a spot in the Sprint Cup Series. And knowing how competitive he is, he’s not going to stop trying until he finally becomes NASCAR’s top racer. “I’m a competitor and a fighter, so I’m looking to have a long career in NASCAR. eet Vaughn Gittin Jr. One of the most intense motorsport drivers in the world! In the sport of drifting, Gittin reigns supreme with his pedal-to-the-metal aggressive driving style as he takes turns like no other and pushes the limits to his Monster Energy Falken Tire Ford Mustang RTR. The self-taught professional drifter from Annapolis, Maryland has built quite the reputation on the track, something he’s worked hard over the years to accomplish. While working a 9-5, he’d put all his free time into his drifting career, spending hours on self-promotion and practice to get to this point in his career. Now the 2010 Formula Drift champion has numerous accolades under his belt and continues to strive for more, while simultaneously committed to advancing the sport worldwide. Where does your love for all things carrelated begin? Ever since I could remember I loved cars. Growing up, my father was a car wholesaler and always had all types of cars coming and going, many of them sick hot rods and muscle cars. I got a gokart for my birthday when I was four. At my mom’s wedding when I was five, they had to pry Matchbox cars out of my hands while walking down the aisle. All I’ve ever thought and dreamed about were cars. They have always been a part of my life in some way or another. I never planned to be a competitive driver or anything; I think it was just the natural progression of my life and passion for cars that got me behind the wheel as a professional driver. How did you get into drifting? I used to always play around and do donuts and power slides in parking lots after I got my first rear wheel drive car when I was 18. Then I saw some videos of drifting in Japan and was blown away that there was a sport that allowed you to express yourself from the driver’s seat. I first did it for fun, but fell in love with it. Once I realized I was pretty good at it, I knew it was something I wanted to pursue professionally and started to chase the

dream. I did the best I could to teach myself and understand how the business end of the job worked and would go around and self-promote myself in the beginning. I’d make cold calls to companies and introduce myself, head out to events and races during the weekends while still holding down a 9-5 at an IT company and would just network as much as I could to get my name out there. I did all that from 2004-2007, when I left my IT job and made up my mind that I needed to make a commitment to the sport…and I haven’t looked back since. What’s your favorite part about the sport? The cool thing about drifting is that you can really show your style and personality from behind the wheel. People say I have this aggressive and crazy driving style, and I definitely like to drive hard and leave it all on the track, so it’s flattering when people see that. The Mustang is an extension of my body, and I like to get crazy in there and throw the car around as hard as it allows me. What’s your formula for success while drifting? Drifting started out as a hobby and something fun to do, but when it started to transition into competing professionally, I had to take it more seriously. I make sure to still have fun and

It takes the perfect balance of aggressiveness, consistency and teamwork to win championships. All the others were great wins, but winning an entire series championship provided me one of the most unbelievable feelings I’ve ever had. Formula Drift is the most competitive drifting series in the world and my victory spoke volumes for myself, my team and the Ford Mustang. Winning the 2005 USA vs Japan was also an incredible feat. thing to go out there and beat all the champions that are pioneers of the sport and guys that have been looked up to as the best drivers. It was also a huge thing for drifting in America since it showed the skill, passion and dedication that us American drivers have. I like to think it motivated and inspired a lot of other drivers. It was also an incredible win that I’ll never forget. What was your experience like last year when you won the World Drift Series in China? That was an amazing experience. China has a lot going on and drifting is huge over there. I was able to drift in a huge stadium that was used for the Beijing Olympics. It was pretty cool to test out the different style of tracks they have out there. I’m looking forward to going back this year and defending the title. So what’s your game plan for this year’s competition? Attack each event as an individual event and not look at it as a whole. You can get into a lot of trouble if you get ahead of yourself instead of just focusing on one at a time. That’s when you start second guessing yourself. My plan is to just stay cool, calm and collected and dump the clutch and let adrenaline take care of the rest. 142 DUBMAG JULY / AUGUST 2012

Aside from Gittin’s RTR-X, his other baby will be a production version called the Ford Mustang RTR. Check it out in the New Rides section.

What’s the most dangerous situation you’ve ever been in while drifting? It was at the 2008 World Championship and I started out going 110 mph and went into a turn too hard and smashed into the wall at like 80 mph. That was the hardest hit I’ve taken so far. But fortunately, my team built me a safe car that I was able to get out, then jump on the roof and scream to the fans and get towed off the track. Are you ever scared going into a race that an accident like that or worse will happen? It’s actually a good thing to be a bit scared because it means you’re doing something right. Sometimes when you go too hard, you can get a bit nervous, but then you just do it. I try not to think about it too much since every time you get into any car, it can be considered dangerous. But that’s just part of my job and if I thought about it too much I wouldn’t be the successful driver I am today. How did you acquire all your sponsors? Throughout my career, I’ve been fortunate to be able to work with some of the best in the business. We all work together as a team and it’s not just some deal where I put a sticker on my car and call it a day. We’re all like family. Having partners who support me and all my efforts is amazing. Falken Tire was my first sponsor, and we’ve been together for the past eight years. Even before I got into drifting, I knew of Falken and what they were doing and thought it would be cool to be a part of 144 DUBMAG JULY / AUGUST 2012

their team. They approached me after seeing me drift in 2003 when I made my first trip to California after making a name for myself in the East Coast. There was this big event at the Irwindale Speedway and they came up to me to compliment my driving. Then a few days later I got a call asking me if I wanted to join their team and was just floored by the offer. It’s been an amazing relationship since then. What have you yet to accomplish in the sport? Since I’ve already won a championship and a couple of key events, my future goal is just to keep being out there and being the best drifter I can be behind the wheel. I’m always trying to progress the sport in any way I can and want to be an ambassador for drifting all over the world so that the next generation can have the same opportunities I’ve been afforded. I’m just looking to really grow the popularity of it worldwide and want everyone to experience the fun lifestyle of drifting. Are you looking to try your hand at any other motorsports besides drifting? I do love motorsports in general and love just being behind the wheel of a vehicle. Drifting is my main priority right now, and I don’t see it as a stepping stone to anything else. But I’m not opposed to trying out the driver’s seat of something like rally or truck racing one of these days for fun. I’m only 31 right now, so I have at least another 10 years in the sport. I hope to be drifting as long as I possibly can, even if the next generation comes up and starts spanking me. What was your experience like in Ford Octane Academy with other drivers like Ken Block, Brian Deegan and Tanner Foust? It was and incredible experience. I handpicked eight contestants and put them through crazy challenges, testing their mental, physical and driving abilities. It was rewarding to work with my team and be able to teach them some things and then see them battle it out through all the competitions, seeing fire in their eyes as they went head-to-head. It was cool to see how they dealt with various trials and tribulations and then how they overcame them. They were able to see everything we as professional drivers have to deal with on a daily basis. It also made me realize that it takes a special person to do the job since it was so much more than just being behind the wheel of the car. What’s up with Drift Alliance? Drift Alliance is alive and well. It was created when a lot of us first came on the scene and were 146 DUBMAG JULY / AUGUST 2012

always traveling together and doing demos. But right now, our professional careers have all taken different paths so it’s not as easy to get together as much, but we are all still good friends and actually have some new projects in the works. Besides competing, what other things occupy your time? My Ford Mustang RTR line is my other baby. It’s basically my vision of a new generation of Mustangs and we’ve just launched the 2013 Mustang RTR. It’s my aftermarket styling and performance package for the Mustang that’s available at select Ford dealerships worldwide. I’ve been fortunate that the brand has taken off as well as it has. This isn’t just another

moneymaking scheme for me and is a project of passion. It takes a lot of hard work to design and generate the parts and appearance and I’ll continue to keep evolving it as long as I can. Right now I’m strictly focused on just Mustangs, but in the future I may do an RTR series for a different car or truck. What’s in your personal garage right now? I’ve acquired quite a few cars. I have multiple Mustangs, including a full carbon fiber one called RTR-C, a 1969 Mustang called the RTR-X, my daily driver 2013 Mustang RTR, a Ford F-150 and a F-450, as well as some bikes like a Supermoto and Suzuki SV1000 touring bike. I’m just getting my dream collection started though. FORD MUSTANG RTR WWW.MUSTANGRTR.COM

he 2012 DUB Show Tour took a bite out of the Big Apple’s car culture when we landed in New York City to display our goods inside the 2012 New York Auto Show at the Jacob Javits Center from April 13-15, 2012. This year was the busiest our area has ever seen, with the DUB section buzzing with fans all three days. The creative masterminds behind Killer Kreations displayed some of their finest art and amazing murals on numerous bikes and cars. But it was their infamous Pauly D bike that stole the show. Other shops that came out to support include: Action Tire with their fleet of show stoppers, Martino Concepts and their milliondollar inventory that had show goers drooling in envy and Xclusv Autosports showing off their custom treasures. Everyone filled up on DUB Edition Drinks at the Monster Energy booth, while Boost Mobile Powered by LG’s booth had some of the hottest ladies working their display, while presenting show goers with some cool giveaways. The Pirelli booth showcased their latest tire styles and their hot models! Sony killed it with their booth that touted various vehicles, including the Escalade that was converted into a moving boom box built by Martino Auto Concepts with the audio install done by Xclusv Autosports. The Harley-Davidson Custom Bike Shoot-Out had more than 18 bikes on display and all had everyone talking about their cool factor, while Pioneer showed off their

one-of-kind Swagger Wagon MIXTRAX mobile club. Soundstream was also on hand with one of the loudest vehicles in the room. Fans got to take pictures and get autographs from UFC fighter Rafael Natal inside HarleyDavidson’s packed booth. Donz Wheels, as always, showed us why they are one the premier wheel brands out of New York and came out hard with all their designs. The Mobil 1 Performance Zone educated those on why they’re the world’s leading synthetic motor oil brand, while the

Kawasaki booth included free giveaways and posters, while guests got to get up close and personal with their Vulcan Vaquero & ZX10 bikes. Finally, DJ Rush rocked the stage while Juelz Santana met with excited fans. We had a rocking show in NYC and would like to thank everyone who showed up to support, especially our wonderful sponsors: Monster Energy, Pirelli, Harley-Davidson, UFC, Sony, Mobil 1, Kawasaki, “The DUB Magazine Project,” TIS, Dropstars, DUB Garage, MOTIV and Gear.

he state of Texas was buzzing weeks before the 2012 DUB Show Tour landed in one of our favorite Southern cities, Dallas, on Sunday, May 20, 2012! And as predicted, the Dallas Convention Center was filled with some of the hottest rides in the state and beyond. It was our biggest event ever in Dallas with more than 25,000 in attendance! And the crowd wasn’t the only thing that came out in numbers, as the cars took up practically all the room in the Convention Center. We were full from wall-to-wall with more than 700 custom rides on display. It was definitely a record for our Dallas stops. The show was so big that even a few members from car clubs in Southern California (Nokturnal, Swift, Xplizit and Techniques) made the trip to compete with some of Texas’ finest. But no doubt, Dallas came out strong, making the competition pretty fierce for all the judges. The “Best Car Club” award went to Swift, who showed up with more than 70 rides, while “Best of Show” was given to the crazy and highly customized “Massive Destruction” Lincoln Navigator from Nokturnal Car Club. “Best Lowrider” was awarded to Juan P. Sifuentes from Brown Impressions Car Club, while Branded Customs took home “Best Retail Shop” for their show-stopping fleet of vehicles. After show-goers got their car fill, it was time to enjoy all the interactive displays and booths. There was never a dull moment at the Monster Energy Zone, which was packed all day with people wanting samples of the Monster Energy DUB Edition drink and pictures and autographs with the beautiful Monster Girls. The Boost Mobile booth was like a raging party with beautiful models, good music and lots of giveaways. But the Pirelli models also caught the attention of a lot of fans, giving their booth lots of traffic. There was massive Safe House giveaways at the DUB Garage booth, including posters from the intense action thriller flick. The “Custom Bike Shoot-Out” by Harley-Davidson featured some mean machines, while MMA enthusiasts got up close and personal with Johny “Big Rigg” Hendricks in Harley’s booth courtesy of UFC. Toyo Tires also had former Strikeforce women’s champion, Miesha Tate, signing autographs in their booth. Sony’s booth displayed all their latest audio gear, while Pioneer’s booth showed off their MIXTRAX van that’s like a club on wheels! Savini and Forgiato had their new wheel styles in their booths, while other vendors in attendance included Soundstream, Trendsetters, Scion Racing and more. Local radio station 97.9 The Beat was in the house and locked in an amazing lineup for

the Boost Mobile Concert Series. Getting the stage warmed up were N.O.4, DSG, Yung Nation, Meance, Enertia, Lil Keke, Z-Ro and Loverance. Texas spitter Paul Wall felt right at home in front of the Dallas crowd, while Travis Porter, Slim Thug, Kia Shine, Dorrough and Kirko Bangz hyped up the crowd with their hits. Baby Bash and Wale had all the ladies screaming, but it was Young Jeezy who stirred the crowd into a frenzy.

No doubt the 2012 Dallas stop of the DUB Show Tour was off the hook and we’d like to thank the fans, car clubs and exhibitors for participating in the show. But none of it would be possible without the help from our sponsors: Monster Energy, Boost Mobile, Pirelli, Safehouse, Harley-Davidson, UFC, Mobil1, Kawasaki, “The DUB Magazine Project,” TIS, Dropstars, DUB Garage, MOTIV and Gear.
