uxury sports cars and sedans are great and all and no doubt exotics are head turners, but nothing beats a truck. Not only are they capable of doing double duty for work and play, but with the right accessories, they’re easily transformed into “Best of Show” winners. But trucks aren’t the only off-roading machines we’re impressed by... Jeeps have become an all-around favorite for many. And because many of us here at DUB actually have trucks (and Jeeps) as daily drivers, we’re excited to fill these pages with loads of off-road and lifted models. Metal Mulisha founder and action sports superstar Brain Deegan has had his fair share of luxury cars and is totally over it. He’s now all about his off-road trucks, partly because of his new profession as an off-road truck racer in the Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series (LOORRS). His Ford Raptor is all he needs in life now to tackle dirt roads and keep his children happy with the included TVs. Following in The General’s footsteps is fellow Metal Mulisha member Ryan Hagy, who also used to be a pro FMX rider and now races trucks like Deegan. His daily driver is a Toyota Tundra that he maneuvers like his racing truck on daily drives to the office where he doubles as Metal Mulisha’s Director of Marketing. Female motocross legend Jessica Patterson isn’t your typical “girly” girl and prefers playing in dirt than playing dress up. When she’s not competing with her Rockstar Energy N-Fab Suzuki, she’s driving around in her, swagged-out 2012 Chevy Silverado. “Jersey Shore” star Vinny Guadagnino might have a Benz and Lambo in his garage at the moment, but he does confess that he wants a truck in the future, citing the Ford Raptor as a possible buy. In the meantime, he has nothing to complain about with the Lambo as his newest toy. Hennessey Performance is a highly reputable American tuner who is no stranger to tuning many of our favorite truck models from Ford, Chevy and Toyota, but they’ve also built an amazing exotic supercar that actually beats out Bugatti’s Veyron 0-200 mph time. They’ve also just recently released the Spyder version of their highly stylish and fast Venom GT (which Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler actually helped make possible!). Then there’s Lupe Fiasco, who totally impressed us with his in-depth automotive knowledge. His garage includes everything from vintage trucks, muscle and luxury rides and he even owns a Jeep Wrangler that’s made for dirt and dunes (and water with its custom snorkel). All his rides are highly customized thanks to his good pals at Platinum Motorsports. As always, this issue is packed with other great reads that will inspire your car game. So sit back and relax as you indulge in Issue 80...

MILLER TIME
NASCAR NEWBIE
Mac Miller is the sh*t! For being a White boy, that kid gots talent for sure. Not only does he have dope ass rhymes, but he makes phat beats. Hip-hop has come a long way and he’s definitely reppin’ hard for the new class of rappers. Can’t wait for him to lay down some new sh*t, ’cause I’m always rolling to his fly tunes!
I always knew Travis Pastrana had the balls to do crazy stunts, but didn’t think he had it in him after last year’s disappointing NASCAR season. Guess the dude really wants to be a top competitor in the sport and is trying hard to make sure he is one as described in his Issue 79 feature. Must be tough on Pastrana, knowing that NASCAR might not be his best sport, since he’s always the best at everything else he does. I’m a huge fan of his, but not sure his NASCAR stint will pan out for him.
D. Miller Via email Yup, he’s a great example of the evolution of hip-hop and its culturally diverse pool of rappers. We agree with you that he’s a prime artist in the new class of rappers and he’s only going to get better with time as he gets older. Like the feature said, he’s already recorded all kinds of tracks, so now he’s just choosing the right ones for his next album… so hang tight, because whatever he drops will be as hot as his last joint!
ROLLING ART
LeRoy Johnston Via email NASCAR is still new to Pastrana, Octavian, and we’re sure that he’ll be a worthy competitor in the coming years! That’s just how he is. Whatever he puts his mind to, he achieves it, which is a great example for all. He didn’t become an action sports champion or notable rally racer overnight, so it might be a while until he’s fully comfortable behind the wheel of his #99 Boost Mobile Toyota Camry…because once he is, he’ll be unstoppable!
DRIFTING KING Honestly, I didn’t know too much about drifting (other than what’s shown in that Fast and the Furious Tokyo Drift flick) until your Issue 79 Vaughn Gittin Jr. feature. It sounds like a really tough but fun sport! I know that customizing your ride can reflect your personality, but would have never thought you’d be able to see that in someone’s driving style. After reading the feature, I Googled a couple of his videos on YouTube and he really does have some flair when he drifts. I’m not a hardcore drifting fan now, but can appreciate the motorsport a bit more now.
Mister Cartoon has it made. There’s nothing that guy can’t do it seems. It’s like everything he touches turns into some sort of successful endeavor. Who would have thought that a Latino tattoo artist from Southern Cali would be an international icon, sought after by Fortune 500 companies. It was cool to read his story in your last issue ’cause I only really knew him for his ink and some of his Nike collabs. He seems like a nice guy despite the fame and fortune and it’s cool he still rides with his Lowrider club. His new Sanctiond line is surprisingly quality stuff, too. I’ve tested out a few of his products and am hooked now. Looks like all I’ll be using on my cars is Sanctiond products. Jaime Vasquez Los Alamitos, CA Mister Cartoon does have a very interesting success story, which only demonstrates that if you work hard to achieve what you want, then you’ll go just as far as he has. We’re sure he never thought being a tattoo artist would land him deals with companies like Nike or Vans, but he had the talent and the drive to create his own destiny. And like all his other business ventures, Sanctiond will be just as successful because he does have a quality product on his hands that also features some cool designs.
18 DUBMAG OCTOBER 2012
Kenny A. Via email Drifting is actually a very exciting motorsport, Kenny. It takes just as much skill and precision as NASCAR…maybe even more. But Gittin Jr. is the sport’s best and has perfected his drifting skills to where he can show a bit of his personality in his maneuvers on the course. It’s always great to see an athlete have a bit of fun in what they do and Gittin Jr. does just that with each and every race. Who knows, you actually just might become that diehard drifting fan, Kenny, because he’s helped turn us into one as well!

FACTORY TUNED AUDIO EXCELLENCE

O
ne Chandler, Arizona resident Alex Fregoso heard a demo vehicle packed with Rockford Fosgate equipment thump and boom at a local show, he immediately knew no other audio brand would do for his custom 2003 Ford F-250. The lifted truck already sported some minor modifications since it would become a fierce show car, but Fregoso wanted it to “knock” with bass that rattled your bones. After finding out that David Clark and his team at Sound Expression in Mesa, AZ were the shop behind the demo vehicle, Fregoso made sure that they gave the same audio love to his F-250 and more, requesting that only Rockford Fosgate products were used. “I had to guarantee him that it was going to pound,” Clark recalls. “We were going back and forth and I knew he was serious when he didn’t flinch at the price I quoted him for the install that would achieve his audio wishes.” And because of such high expectations (Fregoso didn’t want just any audio install), the custom build took about eight months to finish, with Clark and his team triple checking that his F-250 was the loudest it could possibly be. “He wanted such a huge audio system because he noticed that a lot of show rides had good looks on the outside, but didn’t have real audio systems or interiors,” Clark says. “And a lot of lifted trucks didn’t have much, so he wanted to make this one a show-stopping custom truck.” Using nothing but Rockford Fosgate’s best models, the final product exceeded Fregoso’s initial visions and became Clark’s loudest audio install to date. “Every time he’s out in it, he’ll text me how he’s been asked to lower the music by several cops who have stopped him about the 32 DUBMAG OCTOBER 2012
massive sound that blasts from his truck. Another time, he called me up at the shop and said he was in the neighborhood and asked if I could hear him. When I finally heard the music, I texted him and it turns out he was still four blocks out! I could clearly tell that it was a car audio system and could hear him coming from that distance already!” Obviously, regardless of how the truck looks, you won’t be able to miss this monster truck given it boasts 9,500 RMS Watts, with just the subs alone pushing 7,500 Watts! “He’s been told by people that they can ‘feel’ him coming just by the vibrations of the sound alone,” Clark details. “When people hear the legendary Rockford Sound they gather around it, drawing all the attention from other cars,” Fregoso adds. “They are also blown away by the execution of the install done by Sound Xpression. Even when you hear a big audio system, most of the time you go look at it and it’s just not finished very well.” He actually

first showed it at the Mesa Lowrider show in Mesa, AZ earlier this year where it took home 1st place for the “Best in Show Truck” category. Fregoso knew he wanted plexiglass to see the Rockford Fosgate subwoofers and custom door panels to house all the Rockford Fosgate components but was pretty blown away with the end result, Clark admits. “The Rockford system is more than what he was expecting and the installation makes him feel ‘untouchable’ out in the streets and the car shows he enters!”

BRIAN DEEGAN KEEPER OF THE FAITH WORDS: KRISTIE BERTUCCI PHOTOS: ROMAN RACELA
I
t takes a lot of faith to leave the familiar behind for new and uncharted territories, especially when you’re chasing a dream. The MerriamWebster dictionary defines faith as having “complete trust,” “something that is believed especially with strong conviction,” and “a firm belief in something for which there is no proof.” None of these definitions are easy to grasp which is what makes faith such a complex and abstract notion, yet something that is innate in us all. At 17, extreme action sports athlete Brian Deegan allowed his faith (and his father’s) in his motocross abilities to lead him from his hometown of Omaha, Nebraska to Southern California to pursue his dream of becoming a pro supercross rider. “After I graduated high school, I told my dad to give me one year to try and make it as a pro rider and if that plan didn’t work out,
38 DUBMAG OCTOBER 2012
then I’d come back home from California and go to college,” he recalls. That leap of faith has obviously paid off, making Deegan a household name within the action sports world. He is after all, the forefather of freestyle motocross, “The General” of the Metal Mulisha crew and the most decorated freestyle motocross rider in X Games history. Thanks to such unrelenting faith, Deegan went on to win the Los Angeles Coliseum AMA125cc supercross in 1997 as a privateer with no sponsors behind him, and make history by “ghost riding” his store-bought bike across the
finish line—astonishing the crowd, upsetting AMA officials and, basically, setting the stage for freestyle motocross and the future Mulisha crew. “That was my first big achievement, winning the race as a privateer,” he says. “I took out the best in the game and was so pumped that I just launched the bike and remember guys jumping over me, still trying to finish third and fourth. Everybody got mad at me for busting that ghost ride and I was fined, but I didn’t care because I was such a badass rebel.”
OCTOBER 2012 DUBMAG 39
Two years later, Deegan (with the help of other riders) made freestyle motocross an official X Games competition, and he’s since then taken home many gold medals. (He actually holds the elite distinction of being the only rider to compete in every Summer X Games competition since the games’ inception.) As a fierce competitor, Deegan has never settled for anything less than first place (or X Games gold), creating a notable reputation for being a top-rated action sports athlete and an all-time fan favorite. Since his first huge win, the 32-year-old rebel has garnered many more accolades over the years and isn’t even half way done being a fierce competitor. “I feel like I’m in the middle of my career with a lot more of those opportunities coming,” he explains. And by opportunities, Deegan means accomplishments. Already a celebrated and decorated motocross/supercross/freestyle motocross champion, he’s thrown in the towel as a pro competitor on two wheels for the chance to reign supreme in motorsports involving four wheels. “Dirt bikes had been my whole life,” he explains. “With dirt bikes, I feel like I’ve done it all already, like won numerous championships at X Games and stuff. So it’s sort of that ‘been there, done that’ mentality. Plus, after a few bad crashes and near death experiences, I thought I needed to get into something with a roll cage and do something safer, so I started racing trucks. But don’t get me wrong, I still love riding with my buddies, but it’s not about competing anymore. I’m now focused on trucks and racing cars.” In 2009, he ventured into short course offroad racing in the Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series’ (LOORRS) Pro Lite Unlimited class and took home the championship during his rookie season—cementing his name in off-road racing. But like any rookie, he had a rough start. “After Rockstar Energy gave me my first opportunity to race trucks, I sucked at it in the 40 DUBMAG OCTOBER 2012

I got silver, but then for X Games 17, I really went hard and was like, ‘I’m taking home gold!’ And I did. Rally is fun, but my heart is in truck racing. You can catch more air in the trucks on the jumps and there is way more contact in the sport. Rally takes more finesse and perfect driving and I like to just pin it and go crazy in the truck.” Besides his extreme action sports career, Deegan is also well known for his Metal Mulisha brand that has transformed over the years into a full blown lifestyle business. Apparel, shoes, bike/auto accessories and athlete sponsorship is what Metal Mulisha might entail, but at the heart of it all, it’s still about that original “rebel, badass” mentality that Deegan and his pals brought to the sport when they first started the crew. “The goal for Mulisha was to always do something that was different,” he says. “We wanted to set new trends in the sport and do it our way. We’re not scared to be different and that’s what Metal Mulisha is all about…we play by our own rules. Always have and always will.” Metal Mulisha might have been born in motocross, it’s now expanding to MMA, with various fighter sponsorships like the notorious

Diaz brothers, Nick and Nate, and more. “I’ve always been a fan of the sport and love training MMA style,” he says. “It’s really good cross training for me as an athlete so I usually have guys come out and we’ll train together. There’s really nothing more gnarly than getting into the Octagon with other guys just brawling and going at it!” Although he won’t be trying his hand at becoming a pro MMA fighter, he did get to throw blows with Dave Mirra as part of EllisMania 8 (Jason Ellis’ wacky star-studded fight card he hosts in Vegas) on September 17, 2011. “Man, that was an awesome experience!” he admits. “I literally trained for two months, three times a day and went all out for the boxing bout. I even got to train with Mike Tyson a bit. It was so crazy, but I really felt good for the fight. Both Mirra and I were all ripped and yoked-out, ready to battle it out like legit fighters. And like Deegan’s exploration for new sports to conquer (he’s even trying his hand at NASCAR), his ride game has changed tremendously throughout the years. He’s long done with his luxury car fascination, having already had Bimmers, Benzes and more. These days, Deegan’s ride of choice is anything that can handle dirt roads. Being sponsored by Ford has its perks since his Ford Raptor is his everyday ride, while his F-250 does all the dirty work when hauling his racing trucks to events. “Cars need to be about function now,” he says. “I’m not about cruising slow with big rims, and am more about driving fast in the dirt, jumping trucks now. So really, my rides need good suspensions for offroad use. My dream ride is a tough off-road truck with a good suspension that I can jump…and has a DVD player for the family thing.” 46 DUBMAG OCTOBER 2012

hen Brian Deegan , aka “The General,” created his Metal Mulisha crew, he wanted to build a family of likeminded people who not only possessed talent but also stood out from the crowd. One of those guys is Metal Mulisha member, FMX and off-road truck racer Ryan Hagy. Like Deegan, Hagy’s father supported his dream to become a rider at an early age and realized he wanted to pursue a pro riding career after meeting his neighbor Cameron Steele, who at the time was managing Deegan. “I think it’s every kid’s dream to ride motorcycles, and when I was 14, I was fortunate enough to be able to ride with Cameron and Deegan every weekend, which enabled me to progress faster than most.” By the time Hagy was 16, he was traveling all over the world thanks to his neighbor and experiencing the life of an up-and-coming rider. And as he rose up the motocross ranks, the determined Hagy finished high school while juggling a full54 DUBMAG OCTOBER 2012
time riding career. Since then, he’s competed in X Games both in the States and globally (his 2003 stint is one of his biggest accomplishments to date, he says) and has performed FMX jump demos all over the globe, while fully representing his Metal Mulisha affiliation. “Being a member is great!” he exclaims. “All the guys really stick together. Being a member of the crew has really created several opportunities for a lot of us to become successful. Brian is really a great guy. He’s supported my career not only on a bike or a truck, but also in the office at Metal Mulisha from day one! He has a reputation of being a hardass to most people, but that’s just because they’re not on the inside. Once you get to know him and he gets to know you, that’s not the case at all! I would not be where I am at today without Brian or Cameron Steele.” As a core member of the Metal Mulisha team since his teens, the 28-year-old pro and self-proclaimed “badass” is not only a great rider,

And the opportunity presented itself when I felt that I couldn’t progress as fast as the sport was progressing. Don’t get me wrong, it was a tough transition, but I am grateful that I made that choice when I did.” In his tenure as Director of Marketing, one of his greatest achievements is Metal Mulisha’s campaign from 2010 that was called “Poaching.” 56 DUBMAG OCTOBER 2012

We ended up winning the first ever ad campaign award from Transworld Magazine!” Because Hagy is a competitor by nature, and he might not compete on two wheels anymore, but he’s still off-roading and playing in the dirt… but with trucks. Having had an interest in them since 2007, thanks to General Tires, he was given an amazing opportunity to try his hand at offroad truck racing. Last year was his rookie year in the Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series (LOORRS) SuperLite class. For this year, he started in the Lites, but has moved up to the Pro Lite Unlimited division class mid-season and is now going up against his boss and mentor. “Deegan is racing for a championship and I’m just looking for experience this year, so I don’t have any intentions of getting in his way,” he confesses. “He’s a more experienced driver. It’s great to race with him because I’ve learned a lot from him, so my goal isn’t really to beat him. He’s not competition to me, but more like a coach, really.” So far the season is looking pretty good for Hagy and he’s looking to only better his skills as he progresses in the sport. And while his heart will always be in freestyle motocross, he’s really enjoying his time behind the wheel and loving offroad truck racing more than riding his bike (which he still does for fun since retiring back in 2010). Hagy has a full plate, but he’s not complaining because it only helps him better represent his Metal Mulisha crew. “My sport is work! If I was not driving or riding I would be there supporting, so I figured I would still be a participant! I still go to work on Mondays after a long weekend at the track. raditionally, girls aren’t supposed to like playing in dirt or riding dirt bikes. Instead, they’re supposed to do “girly things,” while leaving the dirtier fun to the boys. Jessica Patterson (aka JP$) said screw that and now she’s one of the leading figures in women’s motocross. No, wait…actually the 28-year-old is a “legend” in the sport (as referenced to in her ESPN bio) and well on her way to being a possible future inductee into the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame. She currently has 6 WMX titles and 141 amateur national titles on her accomplishment list and is only missing an X Games gold victory with her Rockstar N-Fab Suzuki. She’s determined to win and has consistently been the fastest athlete on the line, and she’s settling for nothing less for this 2012 season. Where does your motocross story begin? My dad used to ride a lot and race local stuff. I just grew up as a tomboy and had any kind of toy you could think of with a motor. Then I eventually talked my dad into getting me my own dirt bike. My dad met a guy at work and found out that they 62 DUBMAG OCTOBER 2012
raced motocross and they had invited us to a race. I became so amused with it all, and just loved it! I told my dad that it was what I wanted to do, so he told me that if I rode and got better after two years that he would take me racing. I think it was more of a test to see if it was just a phase or if I was serious about it. Well at least I know my mom was hoping it was going to be a phase [laughs]. Not even a year later, we were traveling all over for races. So when did you decide to go pro? As the years went by and I started to get better, I thought there was a good chance that I could become one of the girls that I looked up to. I raced the guys mostly, which I think has even helped me to this day be more aggressive and ride faster; I would often beat them. Back in 1999, when I was almost 16, I moved up to a bigger bike and had our biggest national of the year at Loretta Lynn’s Ranch, and I won it. A week later I did my first “Pro” race and won that. From there, the ball just kept rolling and it’s gotten me to where I am now.

the world. Of course, there are days when you want to be lazy or fall off the program, but then you have to think about those races or championships that you want to win so badly. What’s been the best (or most memorable) championship to date? I’m working on one right now [laughs]. But really it would be when I switched teams in 2010 because I think people really thought my winning days were over. In 2008 and 2009, I went through a lot of tough races and didn’t win many. Yamaha decided that they would be willing to take that chance with me and it paid off. They worked really hard with me and gave me everything I needed to win, and that’s what I did for them. Compared to the previous years, mentally I was strong and knew I had it all, which was such an awesome feeling. Having achieved so much in the sport, what’s left for you to accomplish? I have won a ton of races and championships, which for me never gets old. I would like to try a few more other races overseas and eventually win X Games.

What was the hardest part about learning the sport and becoming pro? Turning pro was all about just learning the tracks. From there it was about learning to be patient, knowing when to make good decisions about passing other riders and stuff. I was young, loved the taste of winning and all I knew was to leave it wide open and whatever happened, happened. Some of those decisions definitely weren’t the best because I would either crash or get hurt usually. But it’s all worked out since then!
beat me. So the kids would try to kill themselves trying to outrace me so their dads didn’t yell at them when they got back to the truck. What do you attribute your talent and skills to? Well, of course, I learned the basics from my dad. He took me riding after school and would help me as much as he could. I also rode with other people growing up that helped a ton like Ricky Carmichael and Earl May. Through the years I have had trainers to help step up my game and keep progressing. What’s your formula for success and winning championships? It’s a lot of hard work, dedication and practice. Training on and off the bike, no matter what, and pretty much just giving your life to it. I don’t mind it at all because it’s something I love and never would want to change it for
What’s been your hardest race to date? I’d say this year at Red Bud in Michigan during Fourth of July weekend. I was practicing on that Tuesday before the race, and Thursday I was flying out to go to Red Bud that weekend. I crashed during practice and knew immediately that something was wrong. I went to the doctors and found out that I had broken my hand pretty bad and needed surgery. I was in the points lead and didn’t want to throw all the hard work out of the window after everything had been going so awesome with my Rockstar Energy Suzuki team. After that weekend, we had a two-week break before the next race. The doctors said I could get plates and screws to fix, and if I could take the pain, I would be able to do the next race. I weighed things out, talked to the team, then decided to go ahead and fly out to race with my broken hand. That weekend was the longest for me. I was in so much pain it made me sick at the end of the day, but I wanted to try and ride to salvage points. I have such an awesome team and doctors behind me who did everything they could to keep me going that day. I ended up keeping the points lead and flew back home to Florida and had surgery that Monday.
What was it like at your first pro race? I had just turned 16 years old and it was in New York. I had never been there before, so I was a little nervous. I was pretty much the underdog even though I was winning a lot of amateur races. The girls that were used to racing those races were familiar with the track and were fast. I put two really good motos together and won the race. It was an amazing feeling! I loved it and wanted more. Was being a female in a male dominated sport a challenge? Yes! Especially when I was younger and starting out there wasn’t as many girls that raced like there is today. I think I pissed more dads off than anything [laughs]. They would be so mad when I would beat their boys that they would tell their sons they had to 64 DUBMAG OCTOBER 2012

Who is your biggest competition these days? Besides myself there is always a good group of girls that are hauling that I can never just count out. How do you mentally and physically prepare for each race? I work with my physical trainer four days a week. Then I work with my moto trainer twice a week during the season. Usually, when the season starts it’s more of maintaining than anything, but of course if a weekend didn’t go good or they see places that I need to work on, that’s what I’ll do during the week. Knowing you put in all the hard work and had good practice days makes you mentally strong. You’re considered a legend in the sport. How does that make you feel? Amazing and honored. I’m just glad I was able to get the support from day one and, still to this day, be able to live my dream. It just so happened that I became a skilled and successful rider. Because of it, I’m always trying to help out others along the way. How did you go about acquiring your sponsors? When you first start out it’s more of building your resume and doing good at all the races you go to. The more races, the better when you’re younger so that you learn how to race all kinds of tracks and riders. My parents took me racing 52 weekends out of the year, so that I would have every edge that I needed.
But you also have to prove your self at the “big national” races to get recognized. At the beginning of this year I had to switch things up again, so my boyfriend and I just walked into the front door of the Rockstar Energy Suzuki team and talked to the Manager Dave Gowland for a bit about a ride. I’ve known him for a while and he used to be my manager at another team when I was younger. He couldn’t believe I didn’t have a ride, so we talked for a while, worked some things out and 24 hours later I was on the team. It was pretty much the best decision I have made yet, I love the bikes, team and the whole operation.
ride. I’m all about having nice cars and taking care of them, and they mean more when you’ve earned them.
What’s been your craziest injury? I have broken both of my feet at the same time. It was horrible. At first the doctors weren’t sure how they were going to put them back together and they had to call a specialist in. I was in a wheel chair for 3.5 months, and then on crutches for another month. It really made me appreciate the small things like being able to walk!
What’s your dream ride? I want either a blacked-out Range Rover or a Bentley Mulsanne.
How do you get back on your bike after injuries? When I first get hurt sometimes it’s like I don’t even care, and I don’t mind having a break from it all. But then about a month or two out, I’m dying to get back on my bike. I think it’s just something in your blood and that you love so much that it will never go away.

So what’s in your garage right now, other than your Rockstar Suzuki? I have a 2010 Chevy Silverado (that I call “White Pony”) and a 2008 Outlaw motorhome. I have some on-road/off-road bikes and a bunch of dirt bikes, too. The White Pony is my favorite. I actually got the truck after winning my championship in 2010, and the company N-Fab made it all custom for me. It’s my baby.

Who do you look up to in the sport? Kevin Windham. He’s the “older” one in the sport for the guys right now, kind of like how I am for the girls. He still rides so well; he’s very smooth and just awesome all around and still continues to win races and amaze the younger crowd.

Any thoughts on what you’ll do after you retire? There’s no date set, but I’m still kind if thinking about what I would do. I definitley still want to be in the industry when I’m done and don’t want to just leave the sport. Maybe I’ll start training some kids and give back to the sport that has given me this awesome life. But yeah, I don’t know exactly yet...I really don’t like to think about that yet, either.

“E
very city we go to for the DUB Show tour, we’ve noticed more and more custom lifted trucks,” says John Ramos, DUB’s Director of Events & Promotions. “It’s been a huge industry for a long time. In the past two years, tire and wheel sales for the offroad market has seen a steady increase. Wheel companies and tire manufacturers are now focusing on off-road-specific wheels and tires due to the continuous growth in the market segment.” Coincidentally, John purchased his 2011 Ford F-250 a few months before the 2011 SEMA Show and with the encouragement of co-workers, he decided to do an extreme build instead of sticking to the mild mods he originally planned on doing. The goal then became to have it as the centerpiece display vehicle in the DUB Garage booth to showcase the new Monster Energy Edition off-road edition wheels in the TIS/ Dropstars Wheels lineup.
The Kelderman lift kit comes with a self-leveling air suspension and dual dampers with external reservoirs that can tackle any terrain.
With less than a month to take the F-250 from stock to a show-stopping lifted truck, John enlisted the help of Eric Valdes, Ramses Sanchez, Manuel Oros and Ryan Dobkin from the DUB Garage team to finish the build. With time as their biggest challenge, the team worked countless hours to put the truck together for SEMA. The foundation of the build was the lift, and John knew that the Kelderman kit was the one, even before he bought the truck. “I knew that was the suspension I wanted, but I didn’t think I’d be able to get it due to the short time constraints. Fortunately, the guys at Kelderman came through and were able to get the kit together quickly and shipped over to us.” Kelderman’s 8”-10” Air Suspension Lift was then powder coated white with chrome accents, providing a durable, yet show-worthy look, for the suspension. But before the lift was able to be completed, a completely one-off set of prototype wheels needed to be fitted. Each 22”x14” prototype Monster Energy Edition wheel took almost two days of machine time to be cut from solid billet aluminum and cost an estimated $5,000 per wheel! Once the prototype wheels were finished they were powder coated matte OCTOBER 2012 DUBMAG 71

black and then wrapped with an aggressive set of Toyo Open Country M/T tires size 40X15.50R22LT. After the lift was completed, a Borla Exhaust System and Bestop Powerboard side steps were bolted on while the color-matched exterior components from Rico at Duran’s Quality Paint were refitted. It was then driven directly to the
SEMA Show and arrived early in the morning before the start of the show, and became one of the most talked about trucks during the week. John’s rig is still an ongoing build with his latest additions being a Fab Fours Front Winch Bumper that was sprayed with color-matched Rhino Lining and Rhino Lining for the truck bed. His future plans include a full interior and in car entertainment system. Despite serving dual purposes as his daily driver and a promotional vehicle at DUB Events and car shows across Southern California, John has still been able to take it out wheelin’ on numerous occasions. “Man, we beat the sh*t out of it, even with the chrome suspension,” he describes. “It’s been to Stoddard Wells (near Barstow, CA), Azusa Canyon and even got to play in the mud out at Brian Deegan’s track when we went to go shoot him at the Metal Mulisha Compound in Temecula, CA. The truck was covered in mud and it took a hell of a long time to clean up, but the Kelderman suspension and Toyo Tires combination performed great with amazing ride quality.” Even though the gas mileage isn’t as great as he’d like it to be (it used to get 16 mpg, but now gets about 10 after all the customizations), John’s F-250 gets attention not just at shows, but even while out in the streets while with his family. “It really turns heads every time I drive it, and I get the ‘thumbs up’ on it everywhere I go!” 72 DUBMAG OCTOBER 2012

el Wade of Off Road Evolution, one of Southern California’s premier 4X4 outfitters, has built a very unique Jeep Wrangler. Mel wanted to prove that he could build a tough, reliable, streetable, cool-looking, raceready, daily driver Jeep from aftermarket parts ordered from a catalog (except for the safety roll cage). What he came up with was the EVO1 - a trail-ready and race-proven Jeep that participated in the grueling King of the Hammers race in 2011 and in 2012 as part of Nitto Tire’s off-road race team. This tough-as-nails Jeep comes with an

Its EVO Manufacturing 5-inch lift long arm suspension with King 2.0 coilovers and 2.5 bypass shocks give the EVO1 Jeep the suspension travel that allow the Nitto Mud Grapplers to traverse the roughest and most vertical terrain. “It’s a street-legal racing machine that looks cool in the city, but will blast through desert trails and go over anything in front of it!” Mel confidently exclaims.

PREMIUM GOODS FASHION X MUSIC X LIFE
PHOTOS: COURTESY OF MARS
L
amar “Mars” Edwards musical resume reads as if it were a Grammy-nomination list for best R&B and hip-hop categories. He’s worked with the biggest names in the game, helping them create some of their best work. The heavy-hitting list includes names such as Jay-Z, T.I., Rihanna, Game, Snoop, Lupe Fiasco, Chris Brown, Faith Evans, Kanye West and so many more. The producer, songwriter and artist has more than 10 years of experience in the industry and is barely reaching his true potential as he continues making music that’s meant to inspire and change the world. Who is Mars? A producer, songwriter and artist who does things differently than most people. I have a different outlook than others. When people go left, I tend to go right, which is how I got the name Mars. A friend used to always tell me how I’d do the opposite of what others were doing or wanted. So if someone in the studio wanted to speed up a beat, I’d want to slow it down. How did you get interested in music? I was born and raised around music. My father was a bishop, so I grew up participating in music for our church. While doing that, I noticed how music always provided me with these happy feelings that made me feel good. I always liked the way various beats would make me feel. As I got older, I understood how beats worked and played around making my own. I used to look at the back of records of certain beats I liked and realized that they were all from the same producer, J Dilla (R.I.P). He played a huge role in my career. He made music that was so real and soulful which really touched me. I realized then that music was supposed to make you feel good and not just be about selling records and making music. I dove into my music making and really concentrated on turning it into a career, which has led me to where I’m at now. How did you join 1500 or Nothin? We had a showcase with Bobby Valentino for him to get his record deal. After the show was over, we were asked how much we’d charge for our services, so right on the spot we just said, “$1,500 for everybody.” Then when asked about the name of the group, we came up with 1500 or Nothin right on the spot. The name stuck and that marked a major moment in our group’s history, as 98 DUBMAG OCTOBER 2012
OCTOBER 2012 DUBMAG 99
well as Bobby Valentino’s since he was able to get his deal. From there, we were officially a group. We do it all, from pop to hip-hop, R&B and gospel, too! Honestly, whatever feels good and whatever we’re interested in, we take on for projects. We’re now both producers and a group. How does your individual artist talents play into your production work? I’m mainly known as a producer, but I still consider myself an artist. I actually put out two solo mixtapes a while back when I was younger. They weren’t the best quality now that I think about it, but back then it was a huge thing for me. But they still contain good music and I had really good responses to them. The majority of my time is spent on production work, but it’s not like I take off one hat to put on the other. I’m always thinking in both producer and artist mode. It just changes when I’m working with a certain artist. That’s when I concentrate on music solely for them, then during breaks, I’ll play around with stuff for myself and the band 1500 or Nothin. So what’s happening with the band, 1500 or Nothin? We’re still very active making music for ourselves when we’re not producing for other people. We’re a live hip-hop band and actually did B.o.B’s track, “Nothin’ On You.” We’ve been Lupe Fiasco’s band for the last three years now and I’m currently the musical director for T.I. We’ve been touring and doing shows with him for a while. Even though we’ve gotten to the point where we don’t want to tour anymore so that we can work on our own stuff , we still do it for artists that we love working with like Snoop, Lupe and T.I. There’s also times when we work on individual projects for certain artists, too, so since we’re involved in so much stuff, it’s kind of hard to work on our own music. What are your most illustrious projects? One of my biggest records was for Chris Brown’s “Take You Down.” I’ve also executive produced Game’s R.E.D. album. But the first major artist who helped cement my name in the industry was Bobby Valentino, while Snoop was the first big artist to really brand us as a recognizable production group. Some of my favorite artists 100 DUBMAG OCTOBER 2012
to work with are Ludacris, Bruno Mars, Rihanna, Brittany Spears, Usher and Wiz Khalifa. My most memorable collaboration was working with Kanye West on “Stronger.” He called me up to play keys on it and I really learned a lot about his creativity and approach to music. It was just so crazy watching him create and how he articulates his thoughts and ideas in his tracks. Who would you love to work with in the future? There are a few artists who I haven’t worked with yet like Madonna, Missy Elliot, Faith Hill and other country acts. I think something like that would actually be pretty cool to intertwine hip-hop and country. I haven’t seen it done before. Kid Rock sort of tried it but it was more from a pop/rock standpoint. I think it would be interesting to have Faith Hill on a track with somebody like T.I. or Snoop and see where it would go musically. What projects are you currently working on? I’m working with T.I. and some things for Ludacris, Trae Tha Truth and Rihanna. We just finished some stuff for Faith Evans and her upcoming reality TV show, as well as the official 1500 or Nothin album. So it’s a very busy time for us. What’s the future hold for your production and artist career? I’m truly blessed to wake up and be living out my dream everyday. I get to make great music and make people feel good, so I like to think of it as I’m slowly but surely changing the world with every beat I make. I’d love to win a Grammy (I’ve been nominated), and just want to continue making music that’s positive and is filled with good vibes and messages. I’m trying to make music that provides positive messages as music did back in the day.

I’M BIG INTO CARS AND CAR CULTURE—FROM UNDERSTANDING, STUDYING, DRIVING AND RESEARCHING EVERYTHING IN THE AUTOMOTIVE WORLD. 112 DUBMAG OCTOBER 2012
“M
y biggest secret up until today was how deeply I’m into cars,” he replies when asked about what his fans may not already know about him. He’s been a prominent figure in hip-hop since he dropped his first solo album, Lupe Fiasco’s Food & Liquor, back in 2006, so he’s had more than his fair share of media scrutiny. “I’m big into cars and car culture—from understanding, studying, driving and researching everything in the automotive world.” The Grammy-award winning rapper no doubt has an accolade heavy career that can take up hours to analyze and discuss, but it’s the car questions that really has him poetically flowing. During our interview with 30-year-old ChiTown lyricist Lupe Fiasco (born Wasalu Muhammad Jaco), we were surprised that he was one of those enthusiasts whose eyes lit up as he talked about his first custom build (a Lowrider truck he visually imagined building from his dad’s old pickup). Like most, his love affair with cars began as a child, particularly with BMWs. “For some reason, I wanted to race BMWs. I don’t remember if I saw one in my Hot Wheels collection, but all I remember is how I loved their body and silhouette and really wanted to race them.” As he grew older and began to take rapping seriously, he began indulging in things he had seen as a kid like a “car that [he] always felt was OCTOBER 2012 DUBMAG 113
fresh riding down [his] block” or nostalgic stuff from his childhood. And like every gearhead, he has an affinity for racing, which lead him to a couple of speed demon-like toys. But currently, his main automotive fixation are race cars from the 1960s. “I can go and research these types of cars all day long,” he explains with a smile. “I’m researching specific cars and the histories behind them. And like everything, once you get so involved in it, you start to meet other people that are involved in it and build relationships with them. I’ve enjoyed talking to different builders about the cars, even if it’s not to buy or own a certain model, but more about the experience and knowledge that comes with knowing their in-depth history. I’ve had a lot of great experiences in the automotive world— from being invited to F1 races to going go kart racing in Australia and even Ferrari letting me run through the streets of Sydney with their fleet.”
Platinum Motorsport outfitted Lupe’s 2011 Chevy Camaro with a 700-hp twin-turbo set up, 20” Agetro F140 Wheels with Michelin Pilot Sport tires. It runs a 255/40R20 up front and a grippy pair of 345/30R20 in the rear to handle the extra horsepower and fill the widebody.
When asked what his current garage looked like, he listed them as if he was performing one of his acclaimed tracks. His descriptions were like prose, while his eyes glistened recalling every model and its details. “I got a Shelby Daytona Coupe replica, picked up a 1967 Austin Healey 3000 MK replica and I’m looking at a Series 1 Jag from the ’60s,” he says. “When I first moved to L.A., I bought an Audi A4 wagon before I stepped it up to a Ferrari 575M, then I got one of my first cars that I actually loved; a 2000 MercedesBenz SL 500 that I had the boys at Platinum [Motorsports] construct for me. After that, I went on a Ferrari craze and bought a 465 GTA, a 1986 412 which was super duper clean to a point where I never drove it at all and a 400i, which is a total 114 DUBMAG OCTOBER 2012
basket case of a Ferrari, but still a favorite car. There’s also a 1991 [Honda] NSX first generation that’s all black and kind of crazy.” Since he’s built a steady relationship with BMW, his daily drivers are usually Bimmer models his heart desires, while his current 2011 twin-turbo Camaro widebody (a gift from his manager Charles “Chilly” Patton), 2007 lifted Jeep Wrangler (complete with a snorkel) and his prized 1971 Chevy Cheyenne CT pickup he calls “Sling Shot” (in addition to his SL 500 Benz, his first official customized car) were all on display for us at Platinum Motorsports, his favorite shop that has become like a second home to him when he’s in L.A. “The Camaro is all about speed and power; the Benz is a personal favorite and all-around

speedster; the Jeep is for when I want to drive from the Pacific Ocean all the way to Bear Mountain; and my CT is just to look cool,” he describes as if it’s a lyric from one of his many rap songs, even though he adds that the truck has no A/C or working radio. With an extensive array of vehicles, he’s still looking to acquire a [Ferrari] F40 and is eyeing a “1965-ish” Jag XKE Series 1. But his ultimate goal is to create his own build.
Lupe’s prized ride is his 1971 Chevy Cheyenne CT pickup he calls “Sling Shot.” He picked it up in Oregon and drove it all the way back to Los Angeles.
“I want to take something that already exists and make something totally new out of it,” he says. “It’s really the same mindset that Carroll Shelby had, which was to take something European based that had great body lines, but give it some American muscle and reliability. I want to take something that exists already and is notoriously maintenance heavy and unreliable and throw in something like a Cobra motor and gut the entire car to replace everything, while 116 DUBMAG OCTOBER 2012

keeping its old bodyline shapes. I’ve got a couple of projects I’m finishing that will definitely make noise in the car world.” No doubt he’s probably turning to his homies Jack and George Keshishyan, who he considers to be like his brothers. “After I dropped off my first car [the SL], we built this tight relationship. I usually come up here and kick it all day. It’s like a club house: the swaggy boys clubhouse where we sit down and talk about cars and how we’re gonna take over the world.” But Lupe isn’t the only celebrity visiting the Keshishyan

brothers, as he details numerous run-ins with other celebrities like Ray J and the Kardashians. “I’ve met David Beckham because of this place,” he laughs. “But, really, I’m not about all the celebrities you meet up around here and am more about the dudes who work here and the regular Joes that come in from all walks of life. You have good guys here that you can just chill with.” While chilling with us at his home away from home, spitting verses on his obsession with automobiles, he also provided insight on his latest effort and fourth studio album, Lupe Fiasco’s Food & Liquor II: The Great American Rap Album Pt. 1.
“My musical endeavors are known for their lyricality, conceptual subject matter that makes Lupe Fiasco who he is and it’s poured into this record. I know it’s going to be well-received, but we’ll see what happens,” he modestly says.. “This album is specifically about America. I’m always telling stories through different characters and things in my records. Like [Lupe Fiasco’s] The Cool was about a zombie coming back to life and me telling his story and all of his influences. I’m good with that ’cause I’m a writer first then a rapper.” “For this one, I chose America as that character and tell different stories through the history of America, American food, American

society and more. Some of it is very controversial and terrible, while some of it is heartfelt and warming. To balance it out, there’s me just rapping and rambling to show my skills, so it’s an album that runs the gamut.” And in traditional Lupe Fiasco style, this album is not without its controversies. His “Lamborghini Angels” track was released with warnings that if you’re easily offended or thin skinned, then you shouldn’t listen to the song because of its controversial themes.. “A majority of people like to be challenged and listen to these sorts of tracks so to speak, but there are still those who are sensitive. And I’m not trying to

hurt anybody, but sometimes the truth hurts.” It’s these reasons that he feels his next few albums might be his last “hoorahs” in the commercial space before he goes back to something more artistic and not for commercial success. “I want to get back into it for the love of music and for making art; not for it to have to sell or be played on the radio. I want to make music just to make it,” he confesses. On a similar note, the accomplished artist also has his bucket list filled with traveling more, not for public consumption, but more for experiencing the world and its different cultures. He also
“My rule is that originals are just gonna be a basket case, especially cars from the 1960s, so I’ll just get a replica. They’re well built with modern parts, so you don’t have to worry about flying to another country just to get an alternator or something as you would for an original. You can just go to Pep Boys and pick something up for it. And you’ll never get an original since the
line is like 60 billionaires long, so I’d just rather go with a replica...” It’s a conversation that could last forever with Lupe Fiasco, which only further demonstrates why his car game is so impressive; not because of the rides he has, but because of the knowledge and enthusiasm he shares with like-minded gearheads like us.
His 2000 Mercedes-Benz SL 500 was his first car build with Platinum. It sports a matte grey exterior and custom Lamborghini diamond stitching on the seats.
wants to put together rallies that have drivers experiencing the world from four wheels. “I want to drive from Beijing, China all the way to Lisbon, Portugal and then drive from L.A. to the bottom of South America for the sake of experiencing the diverse cultures in a format that I love, which is driving. As soon as I can break away from music and being Lupe Fiasco, I want to be a bit more adventurous and experience the world from a different perspective.” But Lupe Fiasco’s musical journey isn’t over just yet, providing fans a sigh of relief. Barely dropping Pt. 1 of his Food & Liquor II: The Great American Rap, he’s slated to release Pt. 2 in the near future and admits to music and cars taking up the majority of his life. As he finishes up talking about his music, his eyes light up again as the talk returns to cars and his philosophies on buying replicas versus original models. 120 DUBMAG OCTOBER 2012

VINNY GUADAGNINO THE GUIDO LIFE
WORDS: KRISTIE BERTUCCI PHOTOS: STEVE SARGENTE | WWW.SASDESIGNSNY.COM
W
hile some might keep their addiction to MTV’s “Jersey Shore” a secret indulgence, we’re totally open to the fact that we watch it. And we’ll continue to watch it until MTV decides to pull the plug on the cultural phenomenon reality show that has changed our lives since it first aired back in 2009. We like it so much that we’ve already checked out several cast members’ garages and needed its youngest male housemate, Vinny Guadagnino’s ride, to make it complete! The Staten Island, NY native was barely 21 when the first season aired, coming into the house as something opposite than your typical “guido” despite his traditional Italian-American heritage and family. Before his tenure on one of the most popular shows on TV, Vinny was on his way to law school, working a couple of odd jobs here and there until a friend sent him over an online application for a “guido” casting call. He filled it out as a joke and got a call back. After a couple of interviews, he landed a role on the then mystery show MTV was producing. Over the course of the past six seasons, Vinny has been an integral part of the show’s culture, often being the more level-headed of all his housemates. But as we’ve all seen, he’s had his own share of drama, too! We talked with Vinny about his growing appreciation for rides, his experiences on the show and more! What’s your car game like? I actually was never that interested in them growing up ’cause I really couldn’t afford anything. My first car was an old ’90s Toyota Celica, and I used to drive my parents cars too. I didn’t grow up with a lot of money, so it was never something I was into. But as a young kid, I’d see all the rappers and their cars and would obviously like them, but it wasn’t something that was a huge interest to me. When the show came, I started to shop around for cars and actually started to get into them more and more. My first real car experience was test driving a Benz that I bought myself.
126 DUBMAG OCTOBER 2012
I’m still in the beginning phases of building my collection. Right now I have a Mercedes-Benz E550 and just purchased a Lamborghini Gallardo and bought my mother a Jeep for her birthday. Why the Benz? People have described to me that when you’re car buying, you’re either into the performance of the car or the style of it. Mercedes to me is more about style, while something like a BMW is more of a performance-based car. I’m not as much into performance or how it drives as I’m into its style. I went with the Benz since it offers the best of both worlds. When I was shopping around, I saw the 2012 E550 and fell in love with it. It’s a luxurious and sporty car, while still being practical and not too over the top. Are you planning on adding any modifications? Actually, I’m really a simple person and don’t even wear that much jewelry. And that’s the same way I feel about cars. I never really wanted to modify too much. I liked it the way it was, simple and classy. But after driving it for about a year, I wanted to make a change to it. So I added the black 19-inch Niche Sportiva wheels wrapped in Falken tires [225/35R19 front and 275/30R19 rear] to it and slightly modified it. I love it the way it is now. I’m a big fan of matte finishes and cars that have that. Maybe one day will get a murderedout car. My Benz is blue, so the black wheels and grille sort of gives it that look a bit. Black wheels are just dope and is the current style as opposed to that bling-bling chrome style that was out a couple of years ago. But I definitely feel less is more when it comes to everything, including cars. How did that recent Lamborghini Gallardo purchase come about? It’s the first white 2013 model in the country. I was actually looking
OCTOBER 2012 DUBMAG 127
at 2012 models and they were all gone, but the dealership called me up and told me they’ll have the first 2013 one in the States and I immediately said yes. I think a Lamborghini is everybody’s dream car. I definitely had some debates over the Ferrari or Lamborghini. I come from a very Italian family and they are solely Ferrari people, so I got some backlash from the Lamborghini…but it’s just more of my style to tell you the truth. There aren’t that many Ferraris that appeal to me that has that flash with speed. But the Lambo just has everything for me: the speed, flash and it’s just that car for me. I’m going to keep it simple, too. That car has enough flair as it is and I’ll probably just tint the windows. Any time you start to modify a car like that I think it starts to look crappy. It’s already customized enough for me. It’s definitely going to be my special occasion car, but at the same time it’s still sort of a practical car with its suspension system that allows it to be lifted up for low areas. In New York, there are a lot of potholes so that makes it better to drive the Gallardo around. What would you love to add later? If I continue making money, then I’ll definitely build my fleet. But I’m not one of those people who would have a collection of like 20 cars because I’m not that passionate about them. I like to have a balance of everything, and I’m probably just going to chill out for now because it is a huge expense and cars depreciate and aren’t investments. I have cars I really like right now and then eventually one day, I’ll keep adding to my collection with other stuff I really want if all goes well. I would like another exotic like a Ferrari, though. I’ll feel complete at that point like I have the best three cars on the road. But I’m also into trucks and my uncle just bought a Ford Raptor and they’re pretty sick trucks. I like trucks that are aggressive and can go off-roading and stuff, so I wouldn’t mind adding one of those in the mix. How does your car game measure up to that of your fellow male roommates? Pauly’s game is really up there and has been into cars his whole life, so his has quite a collection of bikes and cars. Ronnie is more of a BMW guy and likes those driver’s cars. And Mike already has a Lambo and a Ferrari, while I’m more quality not quantity person right now. 128 DUBMAG OCTOBER 2012
What was it like going into the show that first season? We all didn’t know what we were getting into. They didn’t supply a lot of information to us. We knew we were filming something at the Shore and then were told we’d film every day for a couple of months. After that we left and didn’t know what it was going to be or if it would even be a show. But it just took off from there. As the youngest on the show, what have you learned over the six seasons? I learned a lot. I’d never really had a real job before and then all of a sudden I had this whole career, with agents, managers and lawyers handling contracts for negotiations and employees that work for me. I never even had an apartment and I’ve now bought a house and I’m out shopping for expensive cars. It really matured me. I did a lot of things in a couple of years that takes people years to learn. Do you cringe at what you’ve done on past episodes? Yeah, a little bit. But most of the time you can’t regret it because it’s what you did in the moment and it can’t be erased. Some of the stuff I’ve done or what other cast members have done is
not as bad as what goes on in other people’s lives [laughs]. It is MTV at the end of the day, and it’s not like we’re committing crimes on the show or anything. But once in a while you might have a crazy moment where you’re like, “I did that.” Last season you had a rough time. What made you want to come back to the show after leaving? That season was particularly rough because we filmed two seasons back-to-back and filmed 24 hours a day, so 90 days of straight filming. But this last one [the sixth season] was really cool. Everyone is in a different place in their lives, and we’ve all kind of matured now. It was like a reunion and we all had fun so expect the typical shenanigans. How do you deal with all the drama and stress that comes with reality TV? It gets tough and I even wrote a book about it. I just try to chill myself out and think positively a lot and help other people. I have to do a lot of activities and stay active. I’m always at the gym and on the move being proactive. Pauly helps me out a lot; he’s like my brother and keeps me laughing. We talk everyday since we’re always on the road these days. It’s funny ’cause I never expected to be friends with somebody who looks like him but we ended up being like brothers. We
OCTOBER 2012 DUBMAG 129
get each other through it. He’s a really good kid who’s always happy and I need that since I’m kind of like a very quiet person sometimes. He’s always making me laugh, so it’s good we have that. What do you usually tell haters of the show? First I tell them that they can change the channel if they don’t like it. Also that I come from a good family, I graduated with a 3.9 GPA from college, I have a Lamborghini, I would like my son to be like me one day. We’re all good kids and come from good families and are just trying to make it. So if you’re going to hate on us for that, then you have your own problems. Do you still want to become a lawyer? Not anymore. Maybe I’ll go back to school one day and maybe get my Masters. But don’t want to be a practicing lawyer. I really never did and just wanted to go to law school just
for the education since it’s one of the highest degrees you can get. My career goals now center around trying to stay on TV and find my niche in entertainment. I’m a very artsy person, like hosting things and acting. If I can transition this show into another show that might be more hosting-based or even try for a sketched comedy or something scripted, which would be great. I’m just going to continue to take advantage of this opportunity for as long as I can. What are you currently working on? Right now I’m just chilling and next season coming out soon. I wrote my self-help book, Control the Crazy that actually hit the New York Times Bestseller List, which is good. I also might do some speaking events across the country and other than that, MTV has a bunch of shows that they have me come and host like “Hip Hop Squares” and stuff.

reosmith’s front man Steven Tyler may be a household name in the music industry, but many might not know that the rock star helped fuel Hennessey Performance to produce a convertible version of its exotic supercar, the Venom GT. While it was always a future endeavor for owner John Hennessey, it wasn’t until Tyler expressed interest in the American supercar while in Texas for the “American Idol” auditions last year. “The spyder exists because he asked for it,” Hennessey confesses. “We even added a special JL audio system to it given he’s a professional musician, which is now an upgrade option that we are offering customers. Steven’s been a huge help to our Venom GT program and we’re very grateful for his input.” To produce the convertible version, Hennessey and his team needed to adjust a few things on the current hardtop model. “The weight of the vehicle increased slightly, like about 30 lbs., which also required us to offer more horsepower to offset that additional weight,” Hennessey says. “We added one horsepower per one kilogram of weight so that came out to 2.2 pounds of weight, so we bumped up horsepower from 1,200 to 1,244, while still weighing only 2,343 pounds…that’s still very light.”
The Venom GT reaches 0-200 mph in only 15.3 seconds, while the Veyron reaches the same speed in 24.2 seconds, meaning it practically takes double the time for the Veyron to hit that mark! According to Hennessey, the Veyron is more the “luxurious, comfortable European-swanky-type” car, while his is more “American and designed for maximum performance.”
For Hennessey, the idea for the Venom GT supercar began four years ago after being invited by Road and Track magazine for a track shootout to find out which car could run from 0-200 mph in the shortest amount of time. He took one of his Venom 1,000 horsepower twin-turbo Vipers he had customized, which was four seconds faster than a Bugatti Veyron at the event. “As far as I know, we’re the only tuner or manufacturer to have raced against a Veyron and beat it in any contest,” he proudly confesses. “About a month after, I thought about what car OCTOBER 2012 DUBMAG 139
to build next that would be faster and lighter with more horsepower. I wanted to build a car that was lighter than the 3,500-lb. Viper we had in that competition.” From there, the idea to build a car around the cockpit of a Lotus emerged. The rest of the Venom GT was custom-built, with the focus on creating the lightest car possible while still pushing out maximum power. “I’ve driven a lot of fast cars but nothing compares to the performance and acceleration of the Venom GT,” he admits. “The Bugatti Veyron is about 4,300 lbs., so we’re almost 1,400 lbs. lighter.” Since both the Veyron and Venom GT possess amazing horsepower numbers, they’re often compared to each other. The Venom GT reaches 0-200 mph in a very impressive and jawdropping 15.3 seconds, while the Veyron reaches the same speed in 24.2 seconds, meaning it practically takes double the time for the Veyron to hit that mark! They both have the same 0-60 mph (2.5 seconds), but the Veyron’s AWD makes it heavier compared to the 2WD Venom GT, still giving Hennessey’s supercar that extra edge for being lighter. For Hennessey, he believes the two “complement” each other, with the Veyron being the “luxurious, comfortable European-swankytype” car, while his is more “American and designed for maximum performance.”

While it was always a future endeavor for owner John Hennessey, it wasn’t until Tyler expressed interest in the American supercar while in Texas for the “American Idol” auditions last year. His system is the first Venom GT Spyder built and the first to feature a custom JL Audio system.
“Really, having the Venom GT is like having your own roller coaster ride in your garage,” he admits. “You just need to find a long stretch of open highway to let it loose to get that G-force thrill experience you only get with an intense roller coaster.” Hennessey only plans on making 29 units of their $1.1 million supercar ($950,000 for the
hardtop version), which includes both hardtop and spyder form, and they’re barely on No. 8. “We still got about another five years of building our custom Venom GTs,” he says. Because he’s so busy making Venom GTs for clients, he has yet to find the time to make one for himself, but plans to do so before hitting 29. And as for the next evolution of the supercar,

Hennessey isn’t even thinking about it yet. “There may be a successor to the GT that we might make bigger and more comfortable and maybe with AWD, but I’m just happy building the car we currently have. I’m not entirely sure what we’ll do for an encore and we’ll blow up that bridge when we get there.”

ith an amazing Boost Mobile Concert Series Powered by LG lineup, some of the sickest cars in the region and lots of interactive booths, the Charlotte, NC DUB Show Tour stop was one of the best yet for the Queen City! Held at the Charlotte Convention Center on Saturday, June 23, 2012, every inch of the show floor was either occupied with booths, cars or tons of people. It was as if the entire city came out to celebrate car culture… DUB style! Shout out to all the car clubs that were in attendance and who brought out all their hot rides: Lowyalty, Nokturnal, Obsession, ST Clairs Finest and Xplizit. The show’s award for Best Car Club went to the guys from Nokturnal, who turned up in massive numbers. Thanks to all the shops that came out to support, with the Best Retail Shop awarded to the Rim Shop of Charlotte for having one awesome booth. While guests got their fill of all sorts of rides, they really enjoyed the Monster Energy Zone that boasted beautiful Monster Energy Girls and lots of free beverage sampling, while the TIS and Dropstars showcase had everybody desiring all the new wheel styles. Pirelli’s booth also had their own gorgeous models, who passed out loads of free stuff, as guests were schooled on the world’s leading synthetic motor oil at the Mobil 1 Performance Zone. The Kawasaki booth was just one of the many places to see some of the sickest bikes, including the Vulcan Vaquero & ZX10.

The booming Pioneer MIXTRAX club/van was a popular commodity, with everybody lining up to see the amazing custom creation. The night’s amazing Boost Mobile Concert Series Powered by LG was one of the best yet with more than 10 performances throughout the show. Fans were feeling the sets by Str8drop Gang, South, Menace, Majah, DJ Chuck T, N.O.4, Hillside Boyz, King Karter, BJ Cash, Mr. 704, Cezar & Reason. But the crowd’s excitement escalated
when KIA Shine got on the mic and they then went crazy when it was Yo Gotti’s and Rick Ross’ time to take over the stage and close down the festivities. This Charlotte stop was one of the best stops yet and we owe it all to our amazing fans and the support from all the car clubs and shops in attendance. he ATL got a huge dose of car culture when the 2012 DUB Show Tour rolled through the Southern city on Saturday, August 5. Held at the Georgia World Congress Center, the talk of the show was the amazing lineup for the Boost Mobile Concert Series powered by LG, due in part to the great promotions from HOT 107.9 FM provided us, as well as Snoop Dogg’s, aka Snoop Lion, and his hour-long, full-band performance. But as always, the cars were the center of attention. Sick rides were featured every which way you turned! Atlanta brought the heat with their car game! Producer Bangladesh had some of the dopest rides in the building, including his white Hybrid Fisker. T-Pain and his shop, Auto Extremes, rolled deep this year, taking home the award for “Best Celebrity Ride” with his Joker car, as well as the “Best Retail Shop” trophy! Savini and Tekken, Pioneer, and Butler Tire all had some hot whips, too! The Monster BMX team provided a jawdropping show with lots of crazy tricks, while the Monster Energy Zone was the place to chill out and grab some free drinks (and check out the hot Monster girls). The DUB Garage, TIS and Dropstars showcase was a packed booth as everyone wanted to check out the new wheel styles, while the Pirelli Lounge saw a huge amount of traffic with guests looking to feast their eyes on latest tire styles and sizes. Rapper Mykko Montana impressed all with his old school rides, while Mack Maine from YMCMB, popped in to check out the show! Deebo from the “Friday” movies was also seen riding around the show on his Monster bike. As soon as the Boost Mobile Concert Series powered by LG started, it was one of the most

packed areas of the show! Genasis, Menace, King Carter, Mr. 704, Pradigy GT, Mykko Montana, Str8drop Gang, Majah, Hillside Boyz and Kia Shine killed it on stage! Lil Scrappy and Ca$h Out followed up the opening acts with some banging hits that pumped the crowd. But it was B.o.B and Snoop’s performances that stole the show! It was the first time that Snoop performed after announcing that he’ll now perform under the moniker Snoop Lion, as well as his first time on stage at a DUB show! He even brought out members of Tha Dogg Pound Daz and Kurupt! His Uncle June Bug made an apperance on stage, too. You can imagine how pumped we were to have
such a musical icon play at one of our stops and “Hot-lanta” was the lucky city to experience it! We’d like to thank all the fans, car clubs, shops and vendors who helped make the Atlanta stop one of the best visits to date! But a special shout out goes to all our supportive sponsors who made the 2012 DUB Show Tour ATL stop possible: Monster Energy, Pirelli, Boost Mobile, UFC, Sony, Dodge Dart, Mobil 1, Kawasaki, “The DUB Magazine Project,” “DUB Latino” mun2, TIS, Dropstars, Monster Energy Edition Off-Road Wheels, DUB Garage, MOTIV Luxury Alloys and Gear.
