EDITOR’S NOTE ISSUE 83

W

e always enjoy revisiting influential artists and industry heavies. With the business we’re in, it’s important to build strong relationships and we always like to check in on those who continue to inspire us. T-Pain is no stranger to DUB and has graced our cover numerous times, DJ’d at our events and parties, and was recently featured on “The DUB Magazine Project” Season 2. Every time we’ve shown up, he’s been accompanied by one of his stunning rides. This time, he’s flossin’ his $2-million Bugatti Veyron, and still sings nothing but praise for his beloved Joker-themed 1972 Chevy Impala that was dressed up by his shop Auto Extremes. We’ve featured many of MC Customs’ four-wheeled creations in the past, but this time, we’re telling their story - as owner and president Jhulio Tadeo gives us the scoop on some of his most recent projects , including Juwan Howard’s Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4, K-Rod’s Lamborghini Murcièlago LP640 and more beauties we just can’t get enough of. But no matter how much we like re-visiting some of our friends, it’s always nice to establish new relationships with some of today’s hottest names. For this issue, we take a look at how up-and-coming artist Ca$h Out changed his life around. He gives us a crash course on how to drop hit singles and how to “cash out” on life (as he takes a spin in a Fisker Karma). Then there’s Rocko, who might be a veteran in the rap game as CEO of A1 Entertainment, but is now evolving his career as a lyricist with two huge new album releases this year. Despite being a newcomer behind the mic, he’s established quite a fleet with his Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead Coupe and 1972 Oldsmobile Cutlass (as well as a Maybach). This CEO-turned-artist is looking to own 2013 with new his music and fly rides! Also don’t forget to catch up on all your favorite departments because we’ve packed this issue with great reads, like our take on the stand out new cars from the 2013 NAIAS in Detroit. Enjoy 83!

SHOW AND GO

NOTHING ON B.o.B

Pauly D was really the only cast member of MTV’s “Jersey Shore” that had any real talent, so it’s dope to see that at least his career will go on now that the show is cancelled. Too bad you guys never shot the girls with their cars, because I would’ve loved to have seen JWOWW or Sammi Sweetheart on the cover! I might actually go and check out Pauly D’s set at Vanity in the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino next time to see how good he really is. The Kawasakis he got are perfect for cruising the strip...one for show and one for go!

I’m looking forward to hearing what B.o.B’s new sound is like after reading his piece in Issue 82. I’ve been a fan since his mixtape days and think he’s a rare commodity in today’s musical landscape. While others are chasing paper and fame, he’s out to make good music, which is what I’m all about. I’m also feeling his blacked-out Lamborghini Gallardo Spyder...that sh*t is stealthy!

Samuel P. Via Email Actually, Samuel, all the guys we featured had other endeavors in the works, so they might still have a chance at being in the limelight even though the show is over. You should definitely make it a goal to check out Pauly D’s set next time you’re in Vegas ’cause he’s a great DJ (why else would 50 Cent sign him to his label if he wasn’t good?). Not only will he make you dance the entire night, but his charismatic personality will have you rollin’ when he’s on the mic. And yes, he got the perfect set up with his DUB Edition Kawasaki ZX-10R from Killer Kreations and Kawasaki ZX-6R!

Zenith S. Via Email B.o.B is not only a great artist, but an awesome person, too, Zenith! We knew when we first had him at our DUB Show Tour back before he was big that he’d be someone huge in the industry. We’re also on the look out for his new projects and can’t wait to enjoy whatever music he drops next!

THE EAGLE WILL FLY AGAIN

HOUSE OF HOTROD DREAMS

Man, it sucked to see DeSean Jackson get hurt right before the end of last season. He’s a vital player for the Eagles, and I picked up your last issue because I saw him featured on an episode of “The DUB Magazine Project” last fall. His Bentley was pretty cool...I’ve never seen anyone put a system in one. I woulda matted-out the whole car, though...but that’s just me. Hopefully he has a speedy recovery so that he and the Eagles can contend next season! Nelson R. Philly, PA

Those three Chevy Bel Airs that were built by House of Hotrods in your last issue are seriously stunning. The restoration job they did makes them look like they are in mint condition with some tasteful modifications. I have so many classics I’d like to have, but I know one thing for sure...that I’ll be saving up my cash to get House of Hotrods to dress it up! BowtieSwgg55 Via Email Yeah, they do some impressive work there and those three Bel Airs are just a glimpse into what they can do. We’re actually going to be doing a more indepth feature on them in an upcoming issue soon, which will showcase more of their custom rides...so stay tuned!

18 DUBMAG MARCH/APRIL 2013

Yeah, injuries are the worst part of the game, Nelson. DeSean’s a fighter, and he’ll make sure to get better during the off-season so that he’s 100% on top of his game for next. And thanks for the compliment, Nelson! The team here loved working on DeSean’s Bentley because he knew what he wanted and it was a great experience for us. We hope we can work on more cars for him in the future.

DUB AUTONEWSWIRE AUTOMOTIVE NEWS

AUDI’S NEW AUTOMOTIVE LIGHTING TECHNOLOGY At the 2013 CES Show, Audi showed off a futuristic lighting display, featuring its “Laser Taillight,” OLED clusters and their distinctive “OLED swarm.” This new laser technology is actually a safety device that’s designed to make Audi vehicles more visible to drivers in foggy conditions. They project a distinctive triangular beam of light behind the car, it allows drivers to see exactly where the source of the beam is coming from so they can brake accordingly if needed. As the next step for Audi’s LED lighting, it uses less energy than traditional LED lighting and offers more possibilities, such as animated turn signals and complex 3D shapes. While there’s no official word on it being used in production, it just might show up on a future Audi model soon.

PORSCHE’S “FERRARI FIGHTER” 960 GETS DETAILED Automobile reports on the latest from the Porsche camp, along with this sexy rendering. They call it a “FeFi,” or Ferrari Fighter internally, and they mean it. It will be powered by a mid-mounted 3.9L 650hp quad-turbocharged boxer eight, connecting to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. This allows for a 0-60 mph time in about 2.5 seconds. To make it lightweight (about 3,000 pounds), the 960 is made from an aluminum-intensive

2013 HENNESSEY VENOM GT SETS NEW GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS Hennessey’s street-legal 2013 Venom GT supercar was able to accelerate from 0-186 mph in just 13.63 seconds, becoming the new record holder according to Guinness WORLD RECORDS. The time was actually an average of two runs made in opposite directions within one hour, which was then validated by a VBox 3i GPS-based data logging system. The first one had a time of 13.18 seconds with a 4 mph tailwind, while the second one was made in 14.08 seconds with a 6 mph headwind. Each of the runs were conducted at Ellington Airport (also used by NASA) located southeast of Houston, Texas, using the seventh production Venom GT that features: Michelin Pilot Sport Cup DOT-approved radial tires, 93-octane pump fuel, and a full interior replete with highend stereo, air conditioning, and bespoke leather/ Alcantara seats. Powering the speed demon is a 7.0-liter V-8 engine with twin Precision turbochargers, allowing it to push out 1,244 horsepower and 1,155 lb-ft of torque. Only 29 units will be built, with one-third of the production run already being sold so it’s not only the fastest accelerating production car in the world, it’s also one of the most exclusive. 20 DUBMAG MARCH/APRIL 2013

architecture that’s supported by steel, carbon fiber magnesium, titanium and other composite elements. The design should look like that of Porsche’s 918, but the underlying architecture is said to be shared with everything from the next Boxster to the Aventador’s successor. But unlike the 918, this model won’t see a limited run. Bad news is that it’s not expected until 2017. At least that gives you five years to save up...

Three indicators (blue, blue/red, red) on the amplifier’s top mount control boards monitor the exact point in which the ideal signal and power are being utilized. Once this occurs, the “blue/red” indicator tells the installer that optimum performance has been achieved, and so once set, it never has to be configured again. MSRP: $249.99

or the past 10 years, Five Axis and Pioneer have been creating exceptional show cars that are game changers. The relationship first started with the DJ xB that featured a plethora of Pioneer’s DJ and audio products, and that later spawned numerous collaborations, with many concepts built especially for CES shows. To mark their 10 years of work together, as well as feature Pioneer’s latest products at the 2013 CES show in Vegas, they’ve created a tech-inspired Lexus CT 200h show car, now the “Ultimate Connected Car.” At this year’s CES, Pioneer showed off their flagship AV products, as well as their new digital amplifiers perfectly built into the Five Axis creation, complete with a custom widebody exterior. The front end of the car highlights the AVH-X8500BHS receiver that features Mixtrax and smartphone connectivity, while the rear showcases Pioneer’s new digital PRS-D800 amplifiers that are small in footprint, but big on 34 DUBMAG MARCH/APRIL 2013

power and performance,” mentions Jaed Arzadon, Pioneer’s Manager of Corporate Communications. “We wanted to put as many amps in the rear without taking up too much space,” Arzadon continues. “And you can see that the way Five Axis positioned them makes them look as if they’re like a Transformer toy or something.” Five Axis did something that was not typical of an installation. According to Troy Sumitomo, owner of Five Axis, “people [at CES] were asking if Pioneer was going to offer the amp rack design to consumers.” The tastefully done build also sports a custom widebody kit with a satin aluminum exterior finish that’s similar to what you’d find on high-end electronics mixed with black chrome and orange accents. The interior was re-finished with Ultrasuede EcoDesign inserts/headliner and satin gunmetal accents. “The whole car has that techy look, with the exterior looking as if it’s an aluminum car,” Sumitomo describes. “People [at CES] thought this was a cool finish, touching it to see what it was.”

t’s always fun to revisit some of our favorite artists, and T-Pain is definitely one of them! Not only is he fun to hang with, but he’s always down to talk shop, so we were excited to see what the Nappy Boy Entertainment CEO added to his fleet of rides since we last touched base with him for his cover feature in Issue 66 back in 2010. Up first is his 2011 Mini Cooper Countryman John Cooper Works that’s ready for the track with standard high-performance tuning and parts, with its black and red paint scheme providing a sportier feel for the rapper. With lots of custom suede in its interior, it’s the system that really excites T-Pain. “I can’t live without the system,” he confesses. Up next on his driveway tour is his most extravagant purchase: a 2008 Bugatti Veyron. The $2-million dollar ride puts T-Pain in the exclusive Bugatti club with other artists like 40 DUBMAG MARCH/APRIL 2013

Birdman, Flo Rida and Lil Wayne. The decision to purchase one came after Lil Wayne let him take a test drive in his. “I tore his car up, though,” he laughs. “It’s my baby! The fastest I got her up to was 183 mph. Not on the road, though, but out in Miami on the track. After that I got super afraid and stopped pretty fast. It’s not great on brakes since it’s not made to stop; it’s made to go!” T-Pain continues to add that his Veyron has stopped traffic before, guessing that because seeing one on the road is not an everyday sight. While it’s still not his dream ride (that’s a car he can build from scratch), it’s still a huge accomplishment for the Tallahassee, FL born and bred artist. “It’s definitely one of the best cars I’ve owned,” he admits…and he’s owned plenty of rides over the years, from Lambos to old schools and everything else in between. “I never thought I’d own a $2-million dollar car, let alone even having $2-million dollars!”

“I NEVER THOUGHT I’D OWN A $2-MILLION DOLLAR CAR, LET ALONE EVEN HAVING $2-MILLION DOLLARS!” MARCH/APRIL 2013 DUBMAG 41

But having that money isn’t enough for T-Pain, who provides us a bit of insight on his hustler mentality and the thought process that went into justifying such an insane purchase. “If I want something, I don’t tally up what I have in my bank account,” he explains. “Like if I need $40,000 for a down payment on something, I make sure to make the money first instead of just looking to what I already have in my bank account. I make that extra money to get what I want since what I already have in there is for my family.” According to T-Pain, it took a year’s worth of doing shows to make all that extra cash for the Bugatti, and he wasn’t too excited to do a lot of them. After he introduced us to his latest obsession, he gave us the details behind his 2009 Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead that he calls “Raymond,” which sits on a set of 2Crave 26-inch wheels. “The reason I wanted this so bad is that

it’s literally the first Drophead Phantom that was made for North America,” he says. “The guy who bought it, Raymond, said he’d buy it for $2-mil at the auto show that it debuted at. His name is all over the place like inside the glove compartment and stuff. I left it there, but I added some one-off floor mats and rims, and left everything else as is because it’s a dope car on its own.” But Raymond isn’t the only Rolls-Royce that T-Pain is flaunting these days; he also owns a 2010 Rolls-Royce Ghost that sits on 22-inch Asanti AF165 color-matched wheels. It also features a custom system with two 12-inch RE Audio SX subwoofers, US Amps 3D amp and a fiberglass enclosure that houses a bottle of Louis XIV molded in. As a lover of all rides, T-Pain does enjoy vintage cars. However, he recently got rid of about 12 old schools due to the wear and tear he was putting on them. “After driving the Bugatti, you want to drive fast in all your other cars, too,

2 Chainz now owns), as well as many other top names in hip-hop like Ne-Yo, Chris Brown, Ciara and Keri Hilson, to name a few. As fate would have it, the rapper was introduced to them after getting denied at a nearby stereo shop. Auto Extremes was more than happy to open up its doors for T-Pain after they had closed on a Saturday to do some sound work on one of his previous cars. “This was right after his hit “I’m N Luv (Wit A Stripper)” was out, and we were excited to get the work done for him,” says coowner, Robert Robinson. Then in 2010, T-Pain decided to partner up with Robinson to help Auto Extremes become one of the most reputable shops in the South. “I’d be stupid not to team up with them,” T-Pain confesses. “I’m here to make something big happen for the shop.” While he loves all the work they’ve done on all of his cars, T-Pain does admit that it’s the modification of his ’72 Chevy “Joker” Impala that will always be his favorite.

so I started manhandling my old schools and they kept breaking down on me. I may have gotten out of the old school game, but I still dabble in it on occasion. You always have to have some sort of old school ride in your collection.” And to prove that he has no biases when it comes to cars, he shows us his unique 1996 Chevy Caprice “Monster Car” that isn’t as glamorous or fast as his other rides, but features loads of modifications that were done by the team at Auto Extremes in Atlanta (which he co-owns). “I kind of went overboard with customizing it,” he admits. “I added some rims with the Monster “M” centercaps, a slammed suspension, one-off interior… I’m still doing stuff to it, but it’s a slow project right now and not one of my main priorities.” Auto Extremes has personalized more than 40 of T-Pain’s rides (including his tour bus that

“I had something to do with that whole process,” he says. “I helped build that car with two hands and it was built from scratch. It started off as a tore-up Impala and became the masterpiece it is today. It took a whole year to build and is a huge achievement for me.” The car’s theme was actually birthed from a dream the rapper had, which fueled its intricate and realistic airbrushed murals of the Joker from the The Dark Knight. And despite looking like a finished masterpiece, T-Pain admits that he’ll never be finished with it. “To me, there’s always something that we can do to it to make it more perfect,” he explains. “It’s not just an amazing gift, but a curse to my life because I won’t stop working on it.” With all of its intricate modifications like the paint, audio and video system, numerous monitors, and more, the Joker Impala is also a key visualization for new customers of Auto Extremes. “They get to see how good we can customize cars,” T-Pain asserts. “All the work on the car is self-explanatory to the caliber of work we can do and how we can create something so magnificent from scratch.”

verybody deserves a second chance in life… just ask Epic Records recording artist Ca$h Out, (JohnMichael Hakeem Gibson) who is a firm believer. Not only was his life headed in the wrong direction (doing things people “wouldn’t agree with”), but in 2009, the young rapper was on trial for a gun charge. He’ll never forget the moment that changed his life forever… After being acquitted, the ATL rapper was approached by an African-American jury member who told him that he was given another chance and that he needed to do something with it. “Man, it was like somebody sending you an angel, because, you know, they’re not supposed to come up to you because it might look like you bribed them or something,” he tells. “I took heed to what he said, and that was the turning point of my life.” Once he won that case and was given those wise words, Ca$h Out sat back and began to 52 DUBMAG MARCH/APRIL 2013

strategize what was next, which he’d later find out would be music. With only three years in the rap game, he’s been able to land a major record deal after he impressed famed industry exec L.A. Reid and achieved chart-topping success with his hit single “Cashin’ Out,” which is a play on his moniker. According to the rapper, the term refers to “cashing out on getting your bills paid, cashing out on college, etc.” Ca$h Out started rapping after doing a verse on a friend’s track and hasn’t looked back since. “I tried it and I thought it sounded pretty good for my first rap and thought it came pretty easy to me. It definitely didn’t sound like no first time rapper, and that’s what enlightened me to want to be a rapper.” From there, he got the attention of indie record label Bases Loaded Records and started recording tracks. After his big Epic Records deal, he released his first mixtape, It’s

My Time, and closed out 2012 with his second mixtape, Keisha. This year, he’s looking to drop his first major effort, the Patience EP,” and looking to continue to “keep the mojo going” with more hit tracks. “I feel like LeBron when he got his championship, I had that No. 1 spot on the charts and it felt like I won that championship,” he describes. “That’s why I’m here, making these hits…to win it all.” With every project he works on, Ca$h Out is always looking to make it “mind blowing,” with raps about things he’s done, seen, wants and going to get infused with entertaining beats and fun lyrics. “I go in the booth and go hard every time, trying to make a hit single…that’s just me. I’m here to make the Epic and Bases Loaded Records teams happy and to keep going hard just being me by staying and standing in my own lane.” And to set himself apart so that he’s in his own lane, Ca$h Out makes sure to remember that he’s a hustler. “I’m never content with one thing,” he says. “I not only rap, but I can also

sing and have a couple of pop tracks. The door is open for me to make music to please all my supporters who like different stuff. You gotta be in this music business thinking about what doors music can open up for you so that you make it to the top.” He also notes that he’s looking to branch out into other aspects of entertainment, including movies. “I’ve always wanted to be in the forefront doing everything.” But the rising star admits that he’s still adjusting to the hectic schedule and limelight that his fast-track career has now thrown him into. “I’m still adapting to the life, man,” he laughs. ONE OF ONE WORDS: DEANNE DELUNNA PHOTOS: JASON RENE

I

n today’s musical climate, rappers usually follow a simple format: hustle hard, get noticed, sign a record deal, make hit singles and then, if they’re lucky, start a label—with the cycle continuing with their newly signed artists. But for out-of-the-box thinker and businessman Rocko (born Rodney Ramone Hill, Jr.), the opposite is true. As the owner of A1 Entertainment (formerly known as Rocky Road Records), his artistic endeavors as a rapper is a side gig to his fulltime job as a music mogul, which is something that will always come first in his life. But that doesn’t mean he doesn’t deserve respect for his talent because even though Rocko has only been spitting lyrics since 2006 (with only one album under his belt, 2008’s Self Made), he’s been able to acquire a hefty fan base despite his limited discography. “I just rap for the sport and still haven’t decided to be a rapper full-time,” he confesses. “It’s something I just like to do whenever I can. But I’m not out here trying to be in front of the camera every day. I’m not about all that.” While many are fascinated with the stardom that being a hip-hop artist possesses, it was being around his cousin’s studio that intrigued Rocko. After getting a hands-on education in the recording business from his time in the studio, he created his own imprint in 2002. But discovering new talent for a couple of years, Rocko felt he needed a challenge, which is what prompted him to pick up a mic. “I’m young and ambitious and anything I put my mind to, I do it,” he describes. “I like MARCH/APRIL 2013 DUBMAG 63

to challenge myself to try different things and that’s how I started rapping. One day, I just went into the studio and started to make my own music. The tracks turned out to be hits, which is what has now allowed me to actually make a career out of it.” With a drive that never stops, Rocko has been keeping busy these past few years not only growing his imprint and fostering new artists like ATL’s Future, but also working on new tracks for two new releases this year. While both are still pending some final touches, the first studio album that he’s dropping will be titled, Seeing Is Believing, which he describes will feature tracks that are filled with “substance.” “I’m rapping about things from my heart straight to your ears,” he says. “This album will showcase my everyday situation, trials and tribulations and everything that makes me who I am.” After he pours his heart out for his second studio LP, he plans on releasing his next album, One of One, by the end of this year. For

this effort, he’s added a few collaborations from various artists who he “highly respects” and will showcase his “skills” with an upbeat vibe. Being the busy bossman while juggling his rap career hasn’t always been easy, noting that he’s still trying to find a happy medium when handling both. “It’s a hard job to get the right balance because I’m the type of person to completely focus my energy into whatever I’m working on at the moment, so it feels like either one gets neglected when I’m not entirely concentrating on it,” he describes. “I have to really carve out time for both in my schedule to make sure they are both getting the attention they deserve. I’m still learning how to juggle it all and just taking it day-by-day to be the best I can be at both.” And if you ask him to choose his favorite…he’ll just laugh. “That’s a hard question and I’m not prepared to answer that,” he adds. “I love the business side of things and when it comes to my artistry, it’s like I love challenging myself to make records. 64 DUBMAG MARCH/APRIL 2013

The end result of people singing my records does something to my self-esteem; it’s a feeling that can’t be explained. It’s crazy to see people tune into my music and vibe to me as a person and not just a song. I feel this is why I’m still relevant as an artist.” According to Rocko, people buy into him because he’s not afraid to open up his personal feelings in his music, something that makes that connection more personal and allows his fans to identify with him. “I’m one of them and it shows. A lot of other rappers try to act hard and I’m the opposite of that. I’m still one of those rappers in the South that gives them substance and emotion in music.” Rocko is obviously an accomplished artist, and his garage definitely shows he’s one. With a Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead Coupe (sitting pretty on 24-inch Forgiato Enzo Wheels wrapped in Pirelli PZero Nero rubber) and Maybach sitting all too pretty in his garage, it’s hard not to envy such a luxurious (and expensive) collection (he

also has a variety of company cars that include Cadillacs and more). The Phantom Drophead Coupe was a dream car of his, but early on in his career he thought it was a bit foolish to spend so much on a car, regardless of the money you had… But he finally gave into his inner desires and decided to finally snatch up his dream ride about a year ago. Normally opting for an all-black fleet, Rocko decided to switch things up and go for a white version, because according to him, “they hold their value more and look better.” Another ride he boasts about is his 1972 Oldsmobile Cutlass that sits on 22-inch Budnik X Series Pentacle Wheels and wrapped in Pirelli

PZero Nero tires, which was done up (as well as the Phantom) by RPM Motorsports Atlanta. The old school is his choice of ride for when he’s in the mood to just cruise around the ATL. Because of his busy schedule, he doesn’t get to indulge in his rides as much as he’d like, but always makes time to give both his Rolls and Maybach some love when he’s home. “I probably drive the Rolls-Royce about four times a month,” he confesses, adding that the Maybach gets about six special rides. And both feature Rocko’s favorite interior accents: wood grain, leather and suede. “Those things really bring out the luxury of the car,” he admits. Fully content on his garage, right now Rocko is entirely focused on his music career at the moment and doesn’t foresee any new big automotive purchases any time soon. But what he does predict is two banging albums that his fans will love and appreciate, as well as the rest of the hip-hop world.

2013 NORTH AMERICAN INTERNATIONAL AUTO SHOW

WORDS: MIKE DALY

T

he North American International Auto Show rumbled through Detroit once again last January, setting the table for the calendar of major auto shows that follow. As expected in these lean times, new model introductions generally revolved more around considerations of MPG than HP, with manufacturers trying to lure buyers with the promise of better mileage and lower fuel costs. Despite the prevalence of such commendably sustainable thinking, a few of the more choice rides still managed to deliver the requisite sizzle that makes for any good auto show. Here’s a look at our picks of the most intriguing debuts to roll through NAIAS, both on the concept and production side…

CHEVROLET CORVETTE C7 STINGRAY

The long awaited arrival of the seventh-generation Corvette, the longest running sports car in history, does not disappoint. With a nod to Sideswipe (the Stingray concept from the 2009 Transformers sequel), the new ’Vette crosses Italian proportions with Japanese styling influences, while still looking unmistakably Corvette. The base 6.2-liter 450-hp V8 promises sub-4 second 0-60 mph launches, with forthcoming performance versions promising even quicker starts. The interior is significantly upgraded, but we’re not yet sold on the Camaro-derived rear-end. This is not your daddy’s Corvette. This current iteration of the Stingray will make any tech-savvy Millennial kid jump for joy. A computerized “rev matching”

transmission, cylinder deactivation for increased fuel economy, and active stability control are nice additions to the car’s Bluetooth connection and GPS navigation.

STYLE: 9 PERFORMANCE: 10 IN-CAR TECHNOLOGY: 7 FUEL EFFICIENCY: 7 PRICE: $50,000.00 (STARTING PRICE)

FORD ATLAS CONCEPT

This possible preview of the next-generation F-150 abounds in bold surfacing cues and aerodynamic tweaks. Active Grille and Wheel Shutters channel air for a purported gain of 2 mpg on the highway, supplementing the EcoBoost powertrain’s already-respectable fuel economy. New LED headlamps and a re-designed cargo box simultaneously champion form and function, making for a truck that cleans up as well as it works hard. It’s not a technology slouch either with its 360-degree camera, start-stop system (that self-cancels when a trailer is hitched), Dynamic Hitch Assist and Trailer Backup Assist that will back up the truck for you (no steering input from driver needed). Now just imagine it with a premium sound system and 22” wheels… STYLE: 7 PERFORMANCE: 7 IN-CAR TECHNOLOGY: 8 FUEL EFFICIENCY: 6 PRICE: N/A

HOT NEW VEHICLES AND CONCEPTS

CADILLAC ELR

The sweet looking Converj concept car that Cadillac trotted out in 2009 has finally found a real-world platform with this reworked chassis and powertrain based on the Chevy Volt. Those familiar with the Volt and its electric vehicle/ extended range architecture will know that means the gasoline engine in the ELR only serves as a supplementary generator for the electric powertrain, which can be plugged in at home for charging. Getting good gas mileage has never looked so stylish or felt so luxurious. The ELR’s CUE infotainment system combines a touchscreen LCD and haptic feedback with proximity sensors. In addition to touch input, the CUE system includes voice recognition technology that would allow the driver to interact with their mobile phone and stereo without taking their eyes off the road. STYLE: 8 PERFORMANCE: 5 IN-CAR TECHNOLOGY: 8 FUEL EFFICIENCY: 9 PRICE: $50,000.00+

MERCEDES-BENZ CLA

As if they didn’t manufacture a wide enough range of cars already, Mercedes introduced (but didn’t display) this new combination of the A-Class and the C-Class, based on the Concept Style Coupe shown last year. Think of it as the CLS version of the C-Class (ie. a four-door coupe), and perhaps the Mercedes that’s finally priced low enough for ordinary people to afford, while remaining attractive enough to actually be desirable (unlike the Euro-market hatchbacks that have been tried here before…remember that silly CLK?). A turbocharged 2-liter inline-4 pumps out 208 hp, and all-wheel-drive will be an available option, but is it enough to sway potential Evo buyers looking for style points? Forget about the standard Bluetooth connectivity for streaming music and hands-free calling!

AUDI RS7 SPORTBACK

Remember the RS treatment Audi gave the S5 last year? Bigger grille, beefed up engine… sound familiar? The boys at Ingolstadt have now performed the same makeover on the A7 “sportback,” giving the executive coupe/ sedan a 560-hp twin-turbocharged V8 and an electronically adjustable air suspension. The 4-liter motor puts out 553 lb.-ft. of torque, good for 0-60 mph in 3.9 seconds. Look out, M6 Grand Coupe! Although the RS7 let’s you escape anything with it’s blistering speed, it still stays connected to the world with its Audi Connect with Google Earth imagery and Wi-Fi connectivity for up to eight passenger devices!

STYLE: 8 PERFORMANCE: 6 IN-CAR TECHNOLOGY: 9 FUEL EFFICIENCY: 7 PRICE: $100,000.00

The CLA comes with mbrace2 - an advanced connected, in-vehicle services system that offers a range of features, including Concierge, remote access from a compatible smartphone, Internet access and a comprehensive cloud-based telematics system. STYLE: 8 PERFORMANCE: 6 IN-CAR TECHNOLOGY: 9 FUEL EFFICIENCY: 7 PRICE: $30,000.00 (STARTING PRICE)

HYUNDAI HCD-14 CONCEPT

This potential preview of the 2014 Genesis shows that Hyundai has been taking notes on the 4-door coupe-sedans that have become all the rage with the European manufacturers lately (CLS, Sportback, Gran Coupe, Rapide, et al…). Stylish surfacing, a fastback rear-end, and rear-wheel drive give the HCD-14 instant cred as a handsome premium saloon, and the concept interior and rear-hinged rear doors, though likely to never see the light of day, are nice touches. But let’s hope someone takes a pen to that grille, which, from some angles, looks like it was the recent recipient of a Cain Velasquez right cross. Expected to be carried over from current model Hyundai is the 5.0-liter V8 paired to an eightspeed automatic transmission. Apache helicopter pilots will be happy with the head-up display, hand gesture recognition and a system that’s able to track a driver’s eyes to select vehicle functions such as stereo and climate control.

STYLE: 8 PERFORMANCE: 8 IN-CAR TECHNOLOGY: 10 FUEL EFFICIENCY: 5 PRICE: N/A

ACURA NSX CONCEPT II

Getting a feeling of déjà vu? Yes, the nextgeneration NSX Concept was originally shown a year ago, and that imperfect revelation, complete with gaping grille, also made an appearance as Tony Stark’s whip of choice in last summer’s The Avengers. No offense to Iron Man, but this redesign significantly improves upon the flawed grille, and offers the first glimpse of the new NSX’s interior. The drivetrain proposed a year ago remains unchanged, a hybrid V6 powerplant mated to a dual-clutch gearbox. Technology worthy of Stark Industries, indeed…

DEAD SPACE 3 PUBLISHER: ELECTRONIC ARTS | DEVELOPER: VISCERAL GAMES | PLATFORM: XBOX 360, PLAYSTATION 3, PC WWW.DEADSPACE.COM The horror and suspense continues in the third installment of the Dead Space series. Set on the frozen planet Tau Volantis, the third-person shooter game follows the journey of Isaac Clarke, who is joined by merciless soldier John Carver, to chase a risky plan that promises to finally stop the Necromorphs. Together Clarke and Carver must explore Tau Volantis and track down the secret they hope will end the Necromorph plague forever, all while overcoming avalanches, treacherous ice-climbs, and the violent wilderness. Facing deadlier evolved enemies and brutal elements, the unlikely pair must work together to save mankind from the impending apocalypse. The game features a drop-in/drop-out co-op mode that unlocks additional story details and gameplay mechanics only when playing as the co-op character John Carver. The Bench weapon upgrade system from Dead Space and Dead Space 2 has been redesigned as a new upgrading system called the Weapons Bench, which allows players to construct new weapons from parts that Isaac collects throughout the game.

DEFIANCE PUBLISHER: TRION WORLDS | DEVELOPER: TRION WORLDS PLATFORM: XBOX 360, PLAYSTATION 3, PC WWW.DEFIANCE.COM Based on SyFy’s upcoming sci-fi show, Defiance takes place in the near future following a lengthy war that quite literally changed the Earth forever. When an alien race known as the Voltans arrive on Earth and request sanctuary after their own solar system was destroyed, years of negotiations prove fruitless. The refugees become invaders and begin to try to transform the planet, starting a catastrophic war. After unimaginable losses on both sides, a ceasefire began, and the two races are forced to live together on a radically altered Earth. The game combines the intense action of an “AAA” console shooter with the persistence, scale and customization of an MMO (massively multiplayer online game), while its TV counterpart weaves the rich tapestry of the world into a series with scope, characters and the drama of a classic sci-fi epic. And because the show and game exists together, each will influence each other and evolve together over time, with actions in both mediums driving the overall story of Defiance.

REMEMBER ME PUBLISHER: CAPCOM | DEVELOPER: DONTNOD ENTERTAINMENT | PLATFORM: XBOX 360, PLAYSTATION 3, PC Remember Me is a third-person action adventure where players take on the role of Nilin, a former elite memory hunter with the ability to break into people’s minds and steal or even alter their memories. The authorities, fearful of her knowledge and capabilities have arrested Nilin and wiped her memory clean. During the course of the story, Nilin will start remembering who she was and re-learning all the fighting moves that made her one of the world’s leading memory hunters. Remember Me features exploration, platforming, and melee combat, as well as introduces the mechanic of “memory remixing” that enters and rearranges a target’s memories to manipulate them. Players accomplish this by replaying a memory and modifying details to change the target’s recollection of the outcome. 94 DUBMAG MARCH/APRIL 2013

The 305’s Heavy Hitter WORDS: SEAN TUCKER PHOTOS: WILLIAM STERN

“WHEN YOU DO GOOD WORK, PEOPLE TALK ABOUT YOU.” That’s how Jhulio Tadeo explains it. And if you want to understand how to succeed in the custom car industry, Tadeo is your man. Tadeo is the owner and President of Miami’s MC Customs – a shop that has designed and built an entire SEMA Show hall’s worth of custom cars over the last two decades. His clients have included some of Major League Baseball’s biggest stars, legendary names in Miami Heat basketball, and strangers who drive by you in rides that make you turn your head and drop your jaw. It all started, Tadeo says, with fourth- and fifth-generation Honda Civics. In the early ’90s, MC Customs was Miami Chassis and Alignment – the shop other shops called when they had a problem they couldn’t solve. “Those old Civics...,” Tadeo tells, “Everybody used to slam ’em. And we were the only shop in town that could align them.” MC Customs was taking work from every custom shop in Miami, and what started as alignments became more. “Most custom shops didn’t have a body shop back then,” he explains. “So we were doing a lot of work for other shops. We were doing the bodywork, we were fabricating. And at the end of the day, if we were doing the work for other shops, why not do it for ourselves?” MARCH/APRIL 2013 DUBMAG 113

The McLaren MP4-12C is a beast on 20-inch Savini SV39-M carbon fiber laced monoblock wheels, and the roof, and rear diffuser in 3M carbon fiber wrap.

These days, though, the guys at MC Customs don’t make their name with Japanese subcompacts. They work on some of the most exotic cars in the world, finding ways to improve on performance the world’s best engineers thought was good enough, and turning them into unique works of style and art. Often, the clients are ballplayers. That started, Tadeo mentions, with Miami Marlins all-star third baseman Placido Polanco. “He recommended us to people around the league,” Tadeo explains. “And little by little, they started spreading the word.” High-profile clients, though, don’t tend to come with heavy demands. They trust MC Customs’ creative engineers with big decisions about their powerful cars. “I have guys – my biggest client ever is [MLB pitcher] Carlos Silva – guys like him let me do what I want to do,”

Tadeo says. “They give me an idea and we take off from there.” Other heavy-hitter names in Tadeo’s smartphone includes Yankees Robinson Cano and “King” Felix Hernandez, who never hesitate to pick up the phone whenever their new rides need some dressing up. And giving Tadeo and his team license to create can produce some amazing cars. Take for example Juwan Howard’s Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4. 114 DUBMAG MARCH/APRIL 2013

MARCH/APRIL 2013 DUBMAG 115

The 690-horsepower Lamborghini Aventador is a beast of a car, going from a standstill to 62 mph in a Formula 1-like 2.9 seconds, then back to zero in a ridiculous 100 feet. It tops out at 217 mph, and features the lowest, meanest bodywork ever to come out of Sant’Agata Bolognese. There’s just one problem with it…if you’re a six-foot nine-inch NBA champion – you don’t fit in it; which is why Miami Heat’s Juwan Howard went to Tadeo. “Juwan brought it so we could retrofit the seat, the steering column, and the paddle shifters so he could fit into the car,” Tadeo says. But the project didn’t end there. By the time he was done with it, Howard’s Bull was a vicious matte black, with new Vellano Forged VKK wheels finished with orange accents and Pirelli

P Zero Nero tires, deep tint, and a custom black and orange interior. “Was it intimidating, dealing with one of the first Aventadors in the country?” Tadeo was asked. “No, bro, we loved it. I’m doing another one now for [Washington Redskins Lineman] Trent Williams.” Yet, Tadeo is used to dealing with some of the world’s most exotic cars, though. On this months’ cover, next to the Aventador, you’ll see a McLaren MP4-12C that’s been given the MC Customs touch. There aren’t many of those in the U.S., and the owner of this one didn’t want his name used – but Tadeo tells us his team put the 205-mph beast on 20-inch Savini SV39-M carbon fiber

MC Customs fixed up a badass yellow Jeep Wrangler that sits on 26-inch Savini SV-9 wheels and has exterior trim that feature Classic Trim WTP in matte yellow carbon fiber. laced monoblock wheels, and the roof, and rear diffuser in 3M carbon fiber wrap. Then there’s K-Rod’s Lamborghini Murcièlago LP 640… Sometimes, the challenge isn’t just the car. It’s the pressure of the time constraints. Around the league, four-time MLB all-star Francisco Rodriguez, aka K-Rod, is known for his saves record and his sick white Murcièlago. Tadeo can take credit for the second thing, but, he says, it wasn’t an easy project. “He only gave us two weeks to build that car,” he says.

“We had to work around the clock to get it done.” The LP features a full-custom sound system, a gorgeous matte white pearl paint (it’s not a color Lambo offered on the Murcièlago, but the new Aventador comes in a suspiciously similar coat – we think they noticed), and bearing a custom K-Rod logo. But, visit MC Customs’ website this month, though, and you won’t find a celebrity’s car featured. Instead, you’ll see a badass yellow four-door Jeep Wrangler. “That’s not a ballplayer,” Tadeo says, “It’s for a local guy.”

K-Rod’s Lamborghini Murcièlago LP 640 features a full-custom sound system, a gorgeous matte white pearl paint and has a custom K-Rod logo.

The Wrangler features a matte yellow paint job that grabs your attention. It’s subtly contrasted by 26-inch Savini SV-9 wheels and exterior trim that feature Classic Trim WTP in matte yellow carbon fiber. A crazy sound system with ARC Audio amps and JL Audio subwoofers and a completely custom interior that also features Classic Trim WTP matte yellow carbon fiber complete the build. “We developed a matte yellow black carbon fiber paint finish just for that car,” Tadeo confirms. “It took 4 to 5 months to build that

car. The sound system alone was a $20,000 job.” Tadeo estimates that, all told, the customer put around $70,000 into the Jeep. They work on custom projects that most custom shops can only dream about – but then, work like that was once a dream for MC Customs, too. A combination of sharp business skills, solid relationships that earn clients’ trust, and a few lucky breaks have carried these guys a long way from their days of doing wheel alignments on old Civics.

Juwan Howard’s Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4 was not only customized to fit his sixfoot nine-inch stature, but was also dressed in matte black, with new Vellano Forged VKK wheels finished with orange accents and Pirelli P Zero Nero tires, deep tint, and a custom black and orange interior.

programs produced from storied tuners like Brabus, Mansory and Lorisinser. “There’s a lot of positive feedback on our kits, with the majority of compliments pointing out that they look as nice as those from other reputable and high-end manufacturers,” Karen Aleksanian adds. Some highlights include the custom panoramic roof glass, which Artur says has never been done before; the custom carbon fiber hood with its two-tone finish; and the leather “Melon” plus Alcantara gray finish within the interior. Currently, “The Copper Edition” is touring the world as an example of AKA Europort’s tuning packages and overall work. They’re also in the design stages of a third-generation G-Class body kit, as well as in production for their own carbon fiber hoods for the G-Class.

2006 HARLEY-DAVIDSON SOFTAIL DELUXE WORDS: D. REAL PHOTOS: RICH C.

I

t took a lot of thinking and persuasion for bike enthusiast Jesus Rendon to finally give into his dreams of owning a bike. “Even though I always wanted a bike, I debated whether I should get one for safety reasons,” he admits. When he finally gave in, he opted for a sportbike, which turned him into a speed demon. Realizing he was pushing the bike’s limits too far, Rendon decided he needed something that would fulfill his need for openroad cravings in a more laid back manner. “I wanted a bike that had both power and style, but one that I’d also enjoy cruising with.” That’s when he chose his 2006 Harley-Davidson Softail Deluxe.

As a professional mechanic at a Southern California car dealership, Rendon soon got the customizing itch after wanting to stand out from other Softail Deluxe owners. The first makeover wasn’t too drastic, just a simple paint job and some parts upgrades. Still not content with the outcome, Rendon decided to go all out with murals, engraving and more, with the end result making everyone green with envy…literally. Nicknamed “Eyecandy,” its bright green hue laced with seductive murals of beautiful women, in addition to the intricate Damask pattern engraved on all of its chrome parts, will immediately grab anyone’s attention. Although, completely rideable, Rendon keeps “Eyecandy” in pristine condition and show-ready, which has resulted in numerous awards at various shows in Southern Cali, including last year’s Anaheim and L.A. Monster Energy DUB Show tour stops. All the work was done in his garage on weekends or whenever he had spare time from work, using a repair manual to help guide him on MARCH/APRIL 2013 DUBMAG 143

his first modification journey. “I figured if I could wrench on cars at work, I’d be able to tackle a bike, too,” he confirms. With the help of his twin brother Ruben, who laid down the paint in the garage, the murals by Edgar Rodriguez and the engraving by Miguel Chavez, this garage-built Softail Deluxe looks as if it took years to plan out. However, Rendon mentions that he never initially intended to modify it. “I never really thought about customizing it this far, but after taking it to a few bike shows, I wanted it to really stand out from the competition.” And by the looks of it, he’s definitely made it stand out. At the moment, he’s totally content with how his Harley has turned out and isn’t looking to change it up or do anything drastic to it, mentioning that he’s thinking about switching up the seat, but hasn’t found a style that he likes yet. So far, his favorite alteration is the bike’s beautifully mastered engraving that Rendon almost didn’t do. “I was hesitant to get it engraved, but after going to shows and seeing a lot of the top bikes with it, I changed my mind

and went for a pattern that was unique and not really used out there.” Currently, Rendon has two Harley-Davidsons; this one and his 2006 Sportster that he’s left untouched. Rendon doesn’t restrict Eyecandy to only car shows and lets her rip out on the open road a few times a month. “When I got this bike, I vowed to make sure it would be ridden, regardless of what was done to it.” Looking toward the future, Rendon is focused on expanding his customizing skills and start on a new build…this time with an old school ride!

PHILADELPHIA AUTO SHOW JAN 19 - 27, 2013

O

ur 2013 DUB Show Tour kicked off during the Philadelphia Auto Show back in January. From Saturday, Jan. 19 through Sunday, Jan. 27, our show within a show was held at the Philadelphia Convention Center and provided thousands of attendees a unique look at some of the wildest customs the region has to offer. This year’s show opened with a bang, thanks to record breaking attendance for our first day there. The Harley-Davidson booth was packed from opening to close, as was everyone’s all-time favorite, Monster Energy’s booth. We’re thinking it had to be all the free samples of the new DUB Edition Monster flavors that were passed out or maybe the lovely Monster Energy Girls and Harley-Davidson girls? Car Effex brought out some of Philly’s best cars from Eagles players such as Michael Vick, Trent Cole, Jason Babin and Jeremy Maclin, as well as 76ers player Thaddeus Young’s Nissan Armada. Imagine Audio had some of the hardest hitting cars in the show, and brought out Eagles player Mike Paterson’s tricked-out Denali. Of course, it wouldn’t be a Philly show without the Killer Kreations crew showing off their latest masterpieces. Street Dreamz from Maryland made the drive out to the show to display some sick whips that sat nice and pretty with our 2013 DUB Edition Toyota Avalon in the DUB Garage booth. And when it comes to Ford Mustangs, the specialists at Evolution Performance came out with some beastly Mustangs that were pushing some major horsepower. The audio experts at Sounds of Tri-State showed a huge collection of custom cars and also featured Pioneer’s Mixtrax Toyota Sienna as well. We’d like to give a huge thank you shout out to all our sponsors for the show, including: Monster Energy, Harley-Davidson, UFC, “The DUB Magazine Project,” “DUB Latino” mun2, TIS, Dropstars, Monster Energy Edition Off-Road Wheels, DUB Garage, MOTIV and Gear.
