EDITOR’S NOTE ISSUE 84
N
othing beats cruising in the streets with your lowered ride on big rims and stiff suspension, but taking the unbeaten path with pieces of dirt and rocks flying behind you at high speeds in your 4x4 is an entirely different thing everyone needs to experience at least once. A customized ride doesn’t always have to have a candy paint job, chrome wheels or be slammed to the ground, so we’re excited to introduce you to our special off-road issue. Upgrade your Jeep, truck or SUV to sustain any environment with some of the items we’ve packed into Fresh, including new off-road wheels and tires. Then, make your way to Factory Tuned to see how Pioneer provided the ultimate system fit for a Jeep Wrangler and all of its desert expeditions. For those new to the off-roading scene, we’ve provided you with a small guide to some of the best off-roading events and races, including the SCORE Baja 500 & 1000, GRIFFIN King of the Hammers, LOORRS and more. Expand your off-roading knowledge with a few of the scene’s most prominent racers like Jim Riley, Ryan Beat and Nitto Tires’ sponsored racers. There’s also a special New Rides section that features Jeep’s and Mopar’s latest collection that was shown off at the annual Moab Easter Jeep Safari expedition in Utah. Read up on Baja 500 & 1000 and Monster Energy athlete BJ Baldwin and what it takes to be an off-road truck racer and details his Monster Energy trophy truck that was recently showcased in a viral video jumping over a Nissan GT-R in the desert. We’ve also provided two extreme off-roading truck builds that will blow your mind! The first is the A.R.E. x Level 7 Toyota Tundra that’s built to be the perfect vehicle you’d want if you needed to get out of town quickly. The other is Addictive Desert Designs’ Ford Raptor that shows off their new Venom package, along with other subtle, yet impressive, mods. And even though Yo Gotti’s all-white Jeep Wrangler isn’t made for the dunes, it’s still a pretty noteworthy 4x4 that’s part of his lavish collection of whips. The King of Memphis is rolling deep in the South as he continuously drops his signature tracks. While it’s not a big and burly 4x4, we’re still proud to finally debut our 2013 DUB Edition Toyota Avalon in print - sporting a ton of impressive modifications that stunned the Toyota executives and the DUB Show goers at the recent Los Angeles DUB Show. Hopefully after reading this issue, you’ll be inspired to snag up and customize your very own 4x4 (or at least have a new appreciation for the off-roading scene). Enjoy 84.

FROM APPS TO AUTOS
INSTAGRAM LOVE
T-Pain has come a long way from his app days…and his Bugatti is proof of his evolution. I still have his “I Am T-Pain” app that I use whenever I want to kid around and Auto-Tune my voice. It’s always great to see such a humble and talented person like T-Pain come up. He’s unique and original, something rare in today’s music realm. I’m looking forward to new music from him, and enjoyed getting a peek into his awesome garage. That Bugatti is seriously sick and his Rolls-Royce drophead has a cool story, too!
I’m an Instagram addict and admit that I stalk @dubmagazine to look for inspiration for my own customizations and to check out all the hot women you guys feature! I also always tag you guys whenever I take pics of my own fly rides, so I can’t wait to (hopefully) see my picture featured in your new Instagram section of the magazine. It’s now become my favorite in the magazine!
Todd W. Lincoln, NE T-Pain’s success is highly deserved. He’s a down-to-earth dude who really loves music and his fans, which is apparent in his work. He’s one of our favorite artists to work with and we’re always excited to see what new beauties he adds to his garage. He’s always had a dope car game, but has taken it to the next level with his Bugatti that not only makes him a part of hip-hop’s elite, but one of DUB’s finest!
MadLuv4Dub Via Email Thanks for the love on our new section! We thought it would be cool to showcase our fans in action, giving readers like you the appreciation you deserve for being such devoted car culture enthusiasts and DUB devotees. Just make sure to always tag (@DUBMAGZINE) and use the hashtags #DUBMAGAZINE, #DUBSHOW or #DUBEDITION. Some lucky fans will even win some special DUB swag!
EYE CANDY AT THE 2013 NAIAS
MIAMI’S FINEST
The new rides that debuted at the 2013 NAIAS in Detroit were pretty insane. Being a truck guy, my favorite was the Ford Atlas Concept. If it really is the next-gen F-150, I’m totally giving in and upgrading my current F-150 for it. But the Acura NSX Concept II was also a ride that deserves to make it to production. The New Rides section is always a favorite so keep introducing me to more fine rides in the future!
Jhulio Tadeo of MC Customs in Miami, FL makes sweet rides even sweeter! His customization jobs as seen in Issue 83 were jaw dropping! Meeting Miami Marlins All-Star third baseman Placido Polanco was a huge score for Tadeo and really paved the way for success within the celebrity modification scene. It’s amazing to see how the various transformations of these high-end cars can really make it seem like a whole new vehicle. If I ever had such an expensive exotic, Tadeo and his team would probably be the only men I’d trust, too. Latrell A. Orlando, FL All it takes is that one lucky break, which is what Polanco provided for MC Customs. But even before then, Tadeo and his crew were hustling hard to churn out quality customizations and that is what really defines their success. Well that and the fact that they’re not scared to make an already envious ride that much more stunning. And if you ever finally get your dream car, call MC Customs to trick it out for you!
22 DUBMAG MAY/JUNE 2013
Cars4Life89 Via Email The annual NAIAS (aka Detroit Auto Show) is one of our favorite shows. Not only is it the first one of the year, but it’s usually also the one that has all the new concepts and debuts for many of the year’s new models. With so many introductions it’s hard to feature all of them, so we usually pick out a few of our favorites or noteworthy rides to feature in our New Rides section. Thanks for also sharing your love for the section and we’ll make sure to keep loading it up with lots of newsworthy vehicles for ya!

HERMÉS X HYUNDAI EQUUS LIMITED EDITION CONCEPT Hyundai may specialize in affordable, fuelefficient rides, but they’re now showing of their luxurious side with an Equus concept vehicle designed in collaboration with luxury fashion house Hermès. WORLD SPEED RECORD DRAMA ENDS WHERE IT STARTED The Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Super Sport lost the “World’s Fastest Production Car” title for a few weeks when the Hennessey Venom GT put up a speed nearly as fast as the Bugatti’s old record, then pointed out that the exact Veyron that set the record was never on sale to the public, and thus not a production car. The Guinness Book of World Records agreed – the record-setting Veyron Super Sport had a speed limiter disabled that Bugatti won’t disable for customers – and stripped the award. But they wouldn’t give it to Hennessey, either, since the rules require that 50 street-legal examples of a car have been sold before it can be considered a production car, and Hennessey has only built seven Venoms. So the record reverted to

the old holder – the SSC Ultimate Aero R at 256.18 set back in September 2007. Bugatti wanted the title back. But they couldn’t win it with a high-speed run….at least not without selling 50 Veyrons with the limiter removed. So they appealed to Guinness, and Guinness altered the rulebook. The organization now states that, “a change to the speed limiter does not alter the fundamental design of the car or its engine.” That puts the record back at 267.857 mph – 2.1 mph faster than the Venom GT has run. Will that settle it? Hopefully not. Hennessey engineers believe their car has a 275 mph run in it, if they can find a test track long enough to let it hit top speed – on their last run, the driver claimed he never hit full speed before he ran out of runway. And, with Guinness’ rules, they’ll have to build, and sell, several more cars to make the list.

ormer undisputed Heavyweight Champion of the World, Mike Tyson, provided DUB a glimpse into his impressive garage back in Issue 2, the early days of DUB Magazine. The boxing titan was featured with his droptop 2000 Bentley Continental SC and the super rare 1996 Jaguar XJ220. It was Jaguar’s first production supercar and was once its fastest model made (and fastest model made production car in the world until the McLaren F1 was made). In 1996, only 50 XJ220s were built, with the first 30 being race cars and the last 20 road versions. Tyson paid more than $800,000 for his rare Jag that boasts a 3.5-liter twinturbo V6 aluminum engine that allows it to hit a top track speed of 220 mph and accelerate from 0-60 mph in 3.6 seconds. Originally, the Jag was going to be made with a V12 engine, but production took too long and was too expensive. His Bentley Continental SC cost him more than $350,000, which sports a turbo 6.75-liter V8 that can reach speeds as high as 155 mph and go from 0-60 mph in 6.1 seconds. The high-performance thoroughbred with its bold and striking style features distinctive glass roof system, with the roof panels made of advanced, high-strength glass. Its interior features detailed touches, such as a sparkling chromed gear level and engine start button, as well as two-color upholstery. MAY/JUNE 2013 DUBMAG 41

hen creating their all-new 2013 Avalon, Toyota provided themselves with one simple rule: If you’re going to make something, it better be good. Toyota’s premium mid-size flagship car has been in production since 1995 and has seen three previous iterations, but none compare to this year’s new model. Toyota designers wanted to be radical yet have the new Avalon be born from the purest expression and encompass all that they love about driving. The result is what Toyota’s U.S. Senior Vice President of Automotive Operations, Bob Carter, believes is “the most beautiful car [he’s] seen in 20 years with Toyota,” as stated at its first unveiling at the 2012 New York Auto Show. The 2013 Avalon is characterized as being a new era in Toyota design, which is dedicated to creating more exciting vehicles. “The Avalon needed to be a car that represents the future of Toyota,” says Randy Stephens, the Avalon’s chief engineer. “A car that draws people in not just because it’s the next Avalon, but because the consumers have never seen anything like this.” Deciding early on that the next-gen Avalon needed to be a car that had presence, Stephens and the rest of his team provided the vehicle with some dramatic character lines that weren’t overly done, translating to a sportier and sleeker exterior. “It’s bold, aggressive and a little bit different than your conservative Toyota,” mentions Gregg Benkendorfer, National Brand Manager for Avalon. “When the president [of Toyota] saw the rendering he was like, “I wouldn’t change a thing on that. It’s the most beautiful car I think I’ve seen Toyota build.” With a total of four different grades or models that range from the standard XLE to Limited (as well as three hybrid grades or

models), the 2013 Avalon is powered by a 3.5-liter V6 powertrain with 268 hp at 6,200 rpm and 248 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,700 rpm. Acceleration of the Avalon is respectable with a 0-60mph time of under 7 seconds.* The Avalon’s Sport Mode creates a more engaging driving experience by enhancing the Electric Power Steering effort and giving a more direct, responsive steering feel. It also adjusts throttle response to help increase the sensation of the engine’s torque response during acceleration. Thanks to its available paddle shifters, drivers can experience a more exhilarating driving experience (if they choose), all with a quick tap
of the finger. The new Avalon Limited’s rear valance houses stainless steel, chrome-tipped dual exhaust outlets integrated into the body, decreasing noise emission, while increasing fuel economy and driving performance. Because of its overall appearance and performance package, the 2013 Toyota Avalon Limited was a perfect base vehicle for the DUB Garage team. “The first time I saw it, I thought of luxury, so that’s a good step in the right direction,” admitted Myles Kovacs, DUB’s president and co-founder. “I knew we could change the fascia a bit, give it a more aggressive stance and do other subtle changes that we do at DUB to take it over the top.” After the initial evaluation and input from the team, DUB submitted their version of a DUB Edition Toyota Avalon. “When I showed the rendering from DUB around the office, they were like, ‘We have to build this car,’” explains Benkendorfer. “I love the 22” rims, and the exterior is so stunning.” 48 DUBMAG MAY/JUNE 2013
MAY/JUNE 2013 FEBRUARY 2013 DUBMAG DUBMAG 49 17
With only a three week build time to transform a 2013 Toyota Avalon Limited to a DUB Edition ride, the DUB Garage team was hard at work providing the exterior with appearance enhancements, which included tinted tail lights, a custom brilliant black mix paint job, custom T-Rex mesh grille and a fully custom DUB Edition body kit. To provide it with a more aggressive disposition, the factory suspension was replaced with an adjustable coilover system and lowered on a set of one-off 22” TIS Modular Wheels in a matte black and brushed finish wrapped in Nitto Invo tires. “I was excited about getting involved with DUB,” Stephens confesses. “It was like a dream come true. I was blown away when I first saw it, and couldn’t believe the integration of the original lines with DUB products in the design. The whole philosophy was a perfect match. The paint enhances the lines of the vehicle, which is just an unexpected surprise. I personally love the grille
on the front. The lower grille of the stock Avalon is bold and a statement of the car, and in the DUB Edition it was kept in the same location but changed and it enhances what’s already there.” But the customizations didn’t end there… The seats were refitted with black leather and Ultrasuede diamond inserts, the headliner was also replaced with black Ultrasuede, custom door panels wrapped in leather and Ultrasuede with matching painted accents and two 7” headrest monitors. The DUB Garage team didn’t have to do very much to the infotainment system since the 2013 Toyota Avalon Limited already came equipped with plenty of extras for the Limited trim level like a backup camera, as well as with a Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross-Traffic Alert and an Entune Multimedia System. And since JBL car audio is a partner of Toyota, it only made sense to add a few of their aftermarket products to the already robust sound system of the Avalon. “The feeling I get when I see the car is that I want to get in there and drive it right away to see how it performs and what it feels like on the road,” Stephens confesses. “It’s more than we could have hoped for and it’s an amazing transformation.” 50 DUBMAG MAY/JUNE 2013

KING OF MEMPHIS

uring taping for Season 2 of MTV’s “The DUB Magazine Project,” Southern rapper Yo Gotti (born Mario Mims) graciously provided us with a tour of his hometown in Memphis, Tennessee in his white-on-white open-top Jeep Wrangler. By origin, it’s an offroad vehicle, but Yo Gotti isn’t about to hit up any sand dunes soon, instead opting for open-air cruising in his customized 4x4.
No King of Memphis would be complete without a heavyweight timepiece.
While getting a personalized tour of where the rapper grew up to the lavish home he now lives in, numerous fans hollered at Gotti, telling him how much they love his music, with him acknowledging their praise from behind the steering wheel of his Jeep. “When I’m at home, I don’t’ feel like a rapper, I feel like a regular person, you know what I’m saying?” he says, after acknowledging some attention from a neighboring SUV at a stoplight, 60 DUBMAG MAY/JUNE 2013

who rolled down the window to tell him that his music is “hot.” Along the route, he had a few more fan encounters, a nod to why he was crowned the “King of Memphis.” “The streets gave me that,” he confesses. “I’m not really big on titles like that, but when I used to be out and about around the city before I made it big, people came out and would tell me that I represent for Memphis.” Thanks to his talent and hustle, Yo Gotti has become more than a Memphis hero but a Southern staple in rap music, something he’s still pretty humble about to this day, despite all his success. But Gotti wasn’t always as dedicated to his rap game, confessing that he didn’t take it serious in the beginning. But after getting inspired by old school rappers and watching “Yo, MTV Raps,” he’s now 100 percent devoted to perfecting his craft with each track he releases. “Everything has to make sense and be perfect before I put it out,” he admits about how he puts his records together. Other than making music, Gotti gets pumped for every performance and believes that the two go hand in hand. “Ain’t nothing like performing and seeing the reactions to your music and noticing how fans sing along. 62 DUBMAG MAY/JUNE 2013
It’s a special feeling to know that something you created is now a part of their lifestyle.” And when he’s not out making music or traveling, Yo Gotti can usually be found chilling in Memphis, where he keeps a very lavish garage of all-white rides. “White is the movement,” he says. “It’s my favorite color and I started this when everybody was on their black-on-black campaign. But I’ve never been like everybody else, so I didn’t want my rides black and opted for white instead.” The only ride in his garage that isn’t white is his mint green ’67 Firebird and that’s only because it’s a cherished classic that sports original details. “If it wasn’t its original color, I would have slapped some white paint over it,” he laughs. Besides his white Jeep Wrangler, Gotti also owns a Porsche Panamera, Porsche 911, an Oldsmobile Cutlass and his newest baby, a RollsRoyce Ghost. “My Porsche 911 is classy in white but its red guts give it character,” he describes.
“It definitely satisfies my need for speed and I can take off any moment in that thing. Then I go from my two-door 911 to the four-door Porsche Panamera when it’s family time. That’s one of my favorite cars at the moment.” His Cutlass was blue when he first bought it, but he stripped it down, both inside and out, to create a perfect all-white old school. It took six months and about $95K to get it to his exact specifications, which include a white leather interior with red accents, a massive sound system, newly built chromed-out engine and a fresh paint job. The Wrangler is his summer vehicle that he likes to hit the Memphis streets in. According to Gotti, it’s the “perfect vehicle to have when the weather gets warm.” And because everyone knows about his all-white fleet, Gotti gets noticed in whatever car he’s driving in by his Memphis fans. “I feel I’m a representation of my

city, so I have to go hard in everything I do and that includes my rides,” he says. “Everything I do for the area is positive. Like, I came from nothing and now I’m something and showing them and motivating them to do the same.” And his best advice to all his Memphis fans is simple because it’s something he makes sure to remember every day he wakes up. “You have to live life to the fullest. If you want something, you have to go out and get it. You shouldn’t believe that things will just come to you because that’s not reality. You have to make your dreams come true and remember anything is possible. Just look at me!”

And, as always, all of So. Cal’s greatest car clubs came out to represent, including Swift, Nokturnal, Xplizit, German Folk, and loads of Lowrider clubs like Lifestyle, SouthSide, Imperials and Elite. ponsored by Boost Mobile and Monster Energy Drink, the main stage boasted a bombastic barrage of low-end beats kicked off by the Bay Area’s very own Clyde Carson. Performing tracks in support of his most recent mixtape effort, S.T.S.A. [Something To Speak About], the hype of the afternoon got off to an early start as the opening notes of “Slow Down” blared through the speakers. Stepping onstage shortly after, hometown prospect Kid Ink delivered a half hour of R&B soaked hip-hop that managed to smooth out the vibe, all while retaining the room’s energy. Among the more flammable selections “Bad Ass” and “Time Of Your Life” brought out the camera phones. Hot on the heels of his F*ck Em, We Ball 212 mixtape release, Grand Hustle trailblazer B.o.B. brought a dose of Decatur, GA to Los Angeles, CA. Signature Southern draw in tow, the 24-year-old looked almost militant onstage, complete in his all-black outfit and solider-esque black boots. Collaborating with pop staples the likes of Bruno Mars and Hayley Williams of Paramore, B.o.B. also churned out street anthems with Juicy J and T.I. His live set played out in much the same way. Harnessing a healthy combination of radio likability with trunk rattling bangers. As the afternoon wound down, the energy continued to ratchet up (pun very much intended). Los Angeles’ very own Tyga, has come a long way since “Rack City” and his 45-minute stage show got so hot, there was literally flames onstage, as a small monitor fire broke out midway through his set, yet there was no break in the action. Pulling girls onstage and delving into “Faded”, “I Do It For The Ratchets,” and “Make It Nasty,” Tyga performed a greatest hits compilation of current club anthems designed precisely to cause sex appeal to spill out onto the dance floor. NITTO TRAIL GRAPPLER M/T
Tackle your favorite local trail or everyday urban work route with the AT-771. On rock, dirt, gravel, mud or asphalt, the AT-771’s unique tread pattern and sidewall lug design provide excellent allterrain traction, while decreasing pattern noise with multi-pitch noise reduction technology. To further improve off-road prowess, the AT-771 has a stiff but conformable carcass, with several key reinforcements for better stability and handling.
The Trail Grappler M/T blends off-road performance of the Mud Grappler with the onroad comfort of the Terra Grappler to create a tire that is both aggressive and quiet. For off-road performance, the 3-ply sidewall and thick rubber construction increase puncture resistance. On the tread surface, the blocks provide additional biting edges that command lateral stability and enhance forward traction. For on-road comfort, Nitto’s engineers used advanced sound analysis equipment to reduce noise levels commonly associated with off-road tires.

2012 JEEP WRANGLER JK UNLIMITED PHOTOS: ROMAN RACELA
P
ioneer Electronics wanted a unique vehicle for the 2012 SEMA Show in Las Vegas, NV and chose a Jeep Wrangler JK Unlimited to showcase a few of their exciting new products. Luckily, one of the guys at DUB Magazine had one already in the works. What started as a slow build project to create an off-road worthy beast with refined street manners turned into a mad scramble to build a demo car to beat the SEMA deadline. DUB’s own Roman Racela led the project and employed the help of the DUB Garage team for the custom audio system; Street Image Performance for the installation of the BDS Suspension, Fab Fours bumpers and Magnaflow exhaust system; and American Overland Expedition for installs on accessories, gears and more suspension work. As a team, they quickly transformed it into a demo car for Pioneer Electronics just in time for opening

day of the 2012 SEMA Show. Pioneer’s AVHX5500BHS 2-DIN MIXTRAX Multimedia DVD Receiver was chosen for the off-road build, along with three pairs of Pioneer TS-A1605C 6.5” component speakers, three Pioneer TS-W260S4 10” Champion series subwoofers, two Pioneer GM-D8604 1,200W 4-Channel amps and one Pioneer GM-D8604 1,600W mono amp. The DUB Garage team opted to coat the custom sub enclosure, component speaker pods and amp rack for the system in Line-X to provide both protection from the elements as well as texture that complements the build visually. According to Andy Canaza, DUB Garage’s master fabricator, the custom sub enclosure isn’t a typical square shape, but oval, since the team felt it stood out more. “We didn’t want your typical square box that everybody builds,” he says. “We wanted to make everything stand out and thought an oval shape would make a bigger impact visually. While it was harder to build, the finished product really pops.” The face of the box also features a fiberglass insert, which adds to the flair of the custom enclosure, as well as features Pioneer’s 3D logo. The entire system retails for about $3,000, adds Paul Chongkolnun, Pioneer’s Senior Brand Marketing Specialist. “There’s about $8,000 in installation and labor, so the total price of the build is around $11,000. He also adds that the sub enclosure is fit for a Jeep because it’s durable, loud and ready to “take on anything you throw at it,” while the GM-D series amps are powerfully efficient and also matches the entire build. Since the show, the Jeep has seen some serious off-road destinations which tested the vehicle’s performance capabilities and mobile audio’s high fidelity. “It was really fun driving it
through rugged terrain and it was surprising to discover how everything in the Jeep complemented each other,” Racela admits. “The BDS Suspension with Fox Shox handled anything Death Valley threw at it, and Falken’s 36” WildPeak A/T tires gave me confidence to push the Jeep faster without worrying about getting a flat tire, while the Fab Fours body armor made me feel safe against any obstacles. But the Pioneer sound system puts this Jeep over the top. I was blasting some Queens of The Stone Age through its three 10-inch subwoofers and six pairs of speakers and they sort of injected adrenaline in my veins that pressed me to drive faster with little fear of the consequences. You know it’s a pretty powerful sound system when it drowns out the loud growl of the Magnaflow off-road exhaust!”

ince most of our readers are into big tires and wheels, let us introduce you to a different variety of big tires and wheels. The off-road truck scene has seen a steady increase in popularity for the past few years and has now invaded our ranks. Here are some events to satisfy your appetite for dirt-devouring rides and why you should go check out these events, live!
1. GENERAL TIRE MINT 400 WWW.THEMINT400.COM
The Mint 400 is an annual endurance rally near Las Vegas, Nevada. This event is currently the largest off-road race in the world with more than 300 hundred race teams. The Mint 400 begins with vehicle inspections at the Fremont Street district of Downtown Las Vegas, which is then followed by the race around a 100-mile race loop in the scorching Nevada desert. This event has attracted some of the most well known names in motorsports racing, such as Parnelli Jones, Al Unser and Rick Mears, as well as off-road champions Mickey Thompson, Ivan Stewart and Walker Evans, to name a few. TV star and Rolex 24-Hours of Daytona veteran Patrick Dempsey won his race class this year. The Mint 400 - Photo: Mad Media
2. SCORE BAJA 500 & 1000
WWW.SCORE-INTERNATIONAL.COM The SCORE Baja 500 and Baja 1000 are off-road races that take place on Mexico’s Baja California Peninsula. Both rallies are part of the SCORE Championship Desert Racing Series. Various types of vehicles are allowed to compete on the same course, which include large bore motorcycles, Baja Bugs, buggies, trucks, and custom fabricated race vehicles. Notable race entrants include late silverscreen great and racer Paul Newman, who competed in 2004 at age 80; legendary actor Steve McQueen; TV star Patrick Dempsey; NASCAR’s Robby Gordon and Jimmie Johnson; X Games superstar and NASCAR driver Travis Pastrana; CART/IndyCar’s Parnelli Jones, Rick Mears, Johnny Unser and Jimmy Vasser; Rally’s Rod Millen, offroad racing champions Larry Ragland, Walker Evans, Ivan Stewart and Mickey Thompson. 3. GRIFFIN KING OF THE HAMMERS WWW.ULTRA4RACING.COM
The GRIFFIN King of the Hammers (KOH) is a desert endurance race that started in 2007 and has gained popularity year after year. This annual event held in Johnson Valley’s Means Dry Lake bed in Southern California turns this barren desert into a party oasis every February. The race vehicles used at KOH are known as Ultra4 vehicles, which are capable of speeds over 100 mph for desert sections, but still have ultra low gear ratios for technical rock crawling. Racers cover 165 miles of brutal off-road terrain around a 60-mile race loop that includes a rock course.

Riley does everything in life in a big way, and off-road racing is no exception to the rule for the Ladera Ranch, CA native. Riley was introduced to racing by Cameron Steele, who welcomed him into his racing family and helped fuel his love for the sport. By day two, the sport was in his blood. He started racing Trophylite professionally three years ago under Team Azunia, and it wasn’t long after that when he won his first race, taking home first in Trophylite in the 2010 BITD Vegas to Reno race with General Tire teammate Rick L. Johnson. He then followed that up with his first place win in Class 7-2 at the Baja 1000, which was the first time in Baja history that a Trophylite Truck won in that class. That same year, he went on to place at the 2010 Henderson 250 and SNORE Midnight Special.

yan Beat’s determination, tenacity and work ethic makes him a top contender in the Lucas Oil Off-Road Racing Series (LOORRS), having bridged the gap between motorcycles and race trucks quickly. The 26-yearold California native is a third generation driver that races for Hart and Huntington Off-Road. With more than 12 amateur championships and five years spent racing AMA Supercross, Beat transitioned over to racing a Trophy Kart at the Trophy Kart World Champions after sustaining an intense injury from racing motorcycles. He finished third that day, and eventually went on to eight wins and 10 podiums the following year before moving on to the LOORRS Series. To date, Beat has had a young, but successful career in short-course racing. In just two years, he posted numerous podium finishes as well as his first career LOORRS win at Wildwest Motorsports Park in Reno, Nevada last fall. Moving from two wheels to four wheels seems to agree with Beat but it’s certainly not a task that comes easy to many. Especially when

I FEEL [THE SPORT] IS THE BEST KEPT SECRET IN MOTORSPORTS…”

“BALLISTIC” BJ BALDWIN
OFF-ROAD RACING’S CHAMP WORDS: KRISTIE BERTUCCI PHOTOS: JOHN PANGILINAN / ACTION SHOTS BY BRYAN MOORE
F
or off-road enthusiasts, unpaved roads provide an exciting adventure filled with dirt roads, twists and turns, sand dunes and so much more. It’s a chance to test the limits of their 4x4 vehicles, as well as run free on the open road. Now imagine the thrill of it all, yet only 100 times better… That’s what off-road racer “Ballistic” BJ Baldwin experiences each time he suits up for a race or goes out for a practice run in one of his prerunner rigs. “I feel that off road racing is the best kept secret in motorsports,” he confesses. “I’ve been in different kinds of race cars, rally cars, drift cars, and even stock cars. Nothing is even close to being as cool as riding in a trophy truck. You don’t know how amazing it is until you’ve gone
for a ride. It’s incredible how fast these vehicles can go even on the roughest terrain imaginable.” As a young kid, he started following several forms of racing, but took a particular interest with long distance off-road racing after watching the Baja 1000 on TV and then began following the off-road sport religiously. Looking up to legends in the sport like Ivan Stewart, Larry Ragland, Robby Gordon and Rob MacCachren, Baldwin first started out racing off-road buggies before making the jump to the premier Trophy Truck division—the most elite and fastest vehicles in off-road racing. But the transition wasn’t the easiest for the passionate off-roading competitor. “The best way to describe it is like being a pro snowboarder and then trying to be a pro skier,”
he describes. “It’s basically the same surface, but things are very different. It took some time for me to learn, but I had a great mentor help me through the transition, racing icon Larry Ragland. He taught me about maintaining speed through corners, car control and making the truck go faster without hurting it mechanically.” Thanks to Ragland’s help, Baldwin was able to win his first Championship and hasn’t looked back since, winning countless races throughout the duration of his career, not to mention numerous sponsors like Monster Energy and Toyo Tires. He recently filmed a sick video where his Monster Energy trophy truck actually jumped a Nissan GT-R in the desert. The viral video showcases the massive truck tackling the MAY/JUNE 2013 DUBMAG 159
difficult sands of the Mojave Desert at speeds over 140 mph before jumping the sports car. Capable of 850 bhp, the trophy truck was entirely designed on a computer before it was built. “The good part about off-road racing is that everybody has a different theory about what’s going to work,” he says. “You get all types of different configurations with trophy trucks that have different suspensions, engine
and transmission layouts, and even different drivetrains.” But Baldwin only spends minimal time in his precious trophy truck since it’s only together about 20 days out of the year since after each race it’s completely disassembled and inspected. It gets a rebuilt motor, rebuilt transmission, rebuilt shocks and has all the wiring and the suspension checked for cracks or faults. It’s then assembled from the ground up before every single race. 160 DUBMAG MAY/JUNE 2013
Capable of 850 bhp, the trophy truck was entirely designed on a computer before it was built.
To practice his strategy come race day, Baldwin uses his prerunners, either a Chevy Silverado or ’79 Chevy Blazer, which are similar to a trophy truck but have a steel cab and amenities like air conditioning, working doors and windows, and a radio. “We basically take the vehicles out and go around the track a few times leading up to a race and input our course notes on the onboard computer, which are later downloaded to the onboard computer in the actual trophy truck,” he
says. “This helps significantly in a desert race that is 500 or 1,000 miles when you never see the same turn twice. We only get one shot at executing every corner perfectly. Good notes also help us avoid danger.” But when he’s not in his prerunners or trophy truck, Baldwin can be seen around Las Vegas, NV driving either his 2010 Dodge 3500 Crew Cab or cruising in his Nissan GT-R. “I call the Dodge my ‘Trophy Diesel’ because it really looks like a
MAY/JUNE 2013 DUBMAG 161
trophy truck and has the same livery as my race vehicle,” he says. “It has huge 39” Toyo tires on it, and a custom Carli suspension. It’s usually my main truck since it gets 25 mpg, which is really good considering the gas prices.” While he may opt for his truck more than often, he still gives his Nissan GT-R equal love and admires the way it drives. “It’s as if it’s stapled to the ground. It handles like a real road race car,
stops very quickly and it accelerates violently,” Baldwin admits. Adding that he’s a pretty aggressive driver overall a couple times a year he gets busted for it. “I can get away with it except for maybe twice a year,” he laughs. “Las Vegas is not nearly as saturated with traffic enforcement police officers as other cities. Having a few friends in law enforcement never hurts.” And to pacify his innate race mentality, Baldwin invested in some performance modifications to get the GT-R up to par with a custom tune, custom exhaust, bigger fuel pump and high performance fuel injectors. “I love all cars but the cool thing about the GT-R is that with just a few modifications it and it can easily outperform other super cars that cost 5 times as much.” he boasts. “The performance of a slightly modified GT-R is much greater than that of a Lamborghini Aventador or any Ferrari.” Baldwin also mentions that it’s a forgiving car that isn’t difficult to drive, even for novices. “I’ve had a Mustang with 1,000 hp and other fast cars that I wouldn’t let anybody drive because they’re difficult to maneuver and you really have to be a driver to be able to control it, especially aggressively. But with the GT-R, you can pretty much drive like a fool and you wouldn’t lose control because of its on-board computers and stability systems.” According to him the GT-R is very well engineered and it’s one of the fastest, best handling vehicles he’s driven. But in the end, nothing beats the adrenaline rush off-road racing, hours of precision driving on the roughest terrain as he racks up more championships.

f the apocalypse ever happened or if AMC’s “Walking Dead” became a reality with flesheating zombies preying on helpless survivors, then the A.R.E. x Level 7 Toyota Tundra is the vehicle you’d want to have at your disposal. Built by JR Posadas, the rugged off-road beast is made to sustain and tackle any environment and overcome practically any obstacle in its way.
Posadas used his military background as a starting point when designing the Tundra and wanted to create something that had never been done before, while still building a functional vehicle. The massive truck (with a 7” BDS lift with ICON Vehicle Dynamic shocks) even looks menacing with its grey paint scheme and limoblack tinted windows, while sitting on a set of 37” Nitto Mud Grappler Extreme Terrain tires with oneoff KMC XD Series wheels with OMF bead lock. The custom Expedition One front and rear bumpers can withstand just about anything, while the Level 7-built roof and tire racks can carry any extra supplies needed to haul ass from a dangerous zone. Its biohazard images make it known that it means business, while its bulletproof exterior 172 DUBMAG MAY/JUNE 2013

will keep all its occupants safe from any barrage of gunshots. Inside, the truck includes suede headliners, interior LED lights and a custom center console that even has its own safe. “Even though it’s meant to be a crazy build, I really don’t believe in zombies or the whole doomsday thing,” Posadas confesses, adding the truck’s following consists of numerous zombie and doomsday preppers despite the original purpose of his creation. “We get requests to go on doomsday talk shows, but we aren’t serious about it. The main function of the truck isn’t about doomsday prepping. It’s the vehicle you’d want if you needed to get out of town really fast and with lots of ammo.” Besides the exterior modifications, Posadas also added loads of personal touches that include custom weapon boxes in the rear that can hold an array of guns, ammo and more. He even built a custom space for his Bushido sword, an old warrior style he admires. “It’s a ninja way of being a warrior that focuses on respect, honor and not having to destroy everything in your path,” he details. “A lot of cops look at the truck and recognize the sword, but if you don’t have that trained background, you wouldn’t know what it stands for.” But Posadas doesn’t always fully showcase the truck’s capabilities, stating he only dresses it up with all of the weapons and accessories on selected occasions, such as its debut at the 2012 SEMA Show and photo shoots. “It’s only driven on special occasions. It’s a headache when driving it through LAX because the airport cops love going through the truck. We have to literally take out everything because of the checkpoints.” The Level 7 Tundra actually features more than a dozen modifications and customizations, with many built by Posadas himself. He also enlisted the help of several sponsors, including A.R.E. “Because he knew about various military tactics, he was able to translate that experience in his build in order to make a unique vehicle,” notes Jose Reyna from A.R.E. “I knew he had a 174 DUBMAG MAY/JUNE 2013

lot of motivation and wanted to make something that would make people’s jaws drop, which is what made me want to work with him.” The company offered their Z Series truck cap for the build, which is designed to give trucks a sport utility look. The Z Series fiberglass truck cap features an all-glass rear door and is color-matched to the Tundra. They also supplied a bed slide to make it easier to reach equipment inside without needing to climb in. All Posadas has to do is push a button to access anything housed in the back. “We also supplied him with a bed rug and a Hellwig sway bar since he had so much equipment in the back that the ride needed to be stabilized,” Reyna says. “We have a great partnership with ReadyLift and helped Posadas get that from them. All of our products are special orders and everything was carefully installed on this truck. We paid extra attention to
details and made sure everything was reinforced because we wanted to make sure the shell stood up to whatever challenge it would be used for.” Despite looking complete, Posadas isn’t done with the Level 7 build and hopes to add a few more modifications before this year’s SEMA Show. He’ll be adding metal mesh over the windows, integrating solar panels on top of truck so they won’t be seen and accompanying that with a power pack so that the vehicle can run electricity even if the car’s not running. Besides the Toyota Tundra, Posadas is looking to expand his Level 7 company to include more functional 4x4 builds in the future, including a “Chevy practical off-road type” and a Porsche of some kind (he can’t disclose too much information on those projects yet) and hopes to create more unique vehicles that will serve its function “if you needed to be somewhere quick.”

A
s a company derived from the pure love of off-road excursions, Addictive Desert Designs (A.D.D.) for the past eight years has built unique, custom applications that are meant to be durable and provide added protection. What started out in an Arizona garage has now flourished into a top off-road accessories company that can build anything from a unique bolt-on bumper to a complete race truck. To debut their latest Venom bumper kits, A.D.D. enlisted a 2012 Ford F-150 SVT Raptor Supercrew truck from one of its loyal customers to showcase at the 2012 SEMA Show. And because the Ford F-150 was the 2012 SEMA Show Hottest Truck, A.D.D.’s model was one of the show’s most talked about builds for its subtle, yet impressive, modifications. Having already done two previous builds for their customer, the client wanted more performance, wheel travel and good looks, while allowing A.D.D. to have free reign over the modifications. “We just keep pushing the envelope with every build,” says Jason Cobb, A.D.D.’s sales manager. “And this one in particular was meant to show off our new Venom bumper line for SEMA. With a Raptor, off-road performance is a must so we concentrated heavily on its off-roading capabilities and how the new line would fit into that.” The Venom line consists of color-matched front and rear bumpers, chase rack and side steps, with the line featuring an aggressive race look to them while still providing functional protection. “You can see the difference between the Venom line and others we have because this one is simple and clean,” Cobb says. “Everything flows with the Raptor’s body lines, with some people even mistaking the truck as stock. This line is more subtle than others we offer.” While many associate off-roading trucks with lifts, A.D.D. is more about performance and like to keep their trucks low to the ground for better handling, so they started with their long travel suspension kit (including front A-arm kit and tie-rod kit) in the front and added King 3.0 shocks. “The cool thing about the shocks is that they’re from King’s Black Series, so the reservoir is black instead of the normal aluminum color, and instead of their trademark blue on their rod ends, these are color matched to the wheels with green; the same thing with the Eibach Custom Dual Rate springs,” Cobb details.
The entire Raptor features a custom matte white wrap, and a SCT Performance Programmer, Airaid Performance Intake System and MBRP Black Series exhaust to enhance performance numbers. Other modifications include: A.D.D. custom projector headlamps, Recon rear blackedout headlights and custom powder-coated valve corners. To provide ultimate off-road handling on any terrain, General Tire Grabber AT “Red Letter” Race tires were added, while a set of Fuel custom wheels with color-matched OMF custom bead locks help round out exterior modifications. The interior features a MTX sound system, a custom
DVD system in the headrests and plush Italian leather on the seats with white racing stripes. Although it may look like a basic truck to the naked eye, there is really nothing basic about A.D.D.’s Ford Raptor, which is exactly why everyone at SEMA was talking about it. “There’s no crazy graphics on it or anything that really makes it stand out other than all the Monster Green accents on it, but the fact that it wasn’t overdone is what people absolutely loved about it,” Cobb describes. “They couldn’t believe it was a Raptor and that it had the amount of wheel travel that it has based off its stance because it sits so low.” And compared to A.D.D.’s other truck that was displayed at SEMA, which had more graphics and was a bit more “cluttered,” the white Raptor was the build that people were admiring more, Cobb adds. JEEP WRANGLER STITCH
Lightweight performance is the name of the game for the Jeep Wrangler Stitch. Based on the 2013 Wrangler Rubicon, Jeep designers shaved weight wherever possible to bring the curb weight down to just 3,000 lbs. The audio system, all the heating and air conditioning units, rear seats, doors and some body panels were removed. Front seats were replaced with 2013 SRT Viper seats, a custom carbon fiber version of the Jeep Wrangler 10th Anniversary Rubicon replaced the original and a lightweight chrome-moly roll cage replaced the standard unit. The highlight of the build, though, is the transparent silver architectural fabric that hides the removed panels at some angles, while making them visible at others giving the Stitch a futuristic look and feel.
