EDITOR’S NOTE ISSUE 85
I
t’s the height of summer so it’s time to relax with another issue of your favorite car mag…
If you’re in the mood to party, get pumped with DJ Steve Akoi’s feature where he talks about his love for his new Audi A8 and what it was like customizing his one-off Scion FR-S that features its own DJ sound system. He’s gearing up to release his second electronic dance music album and has a new residency in Sin City that’s a must if you’re ever in Las Vegas. But Sean Kingston also has new musical tunes for summer with “Beat It,” which features his best pal Chris Brown and Wiz Khalifa. It’s one of summer’s top jams, which is exactly what the talented young artist hopes for as he jumps back in the saddle after two years of being out of the industry. He’s ready to get back into the limelight and is currently enjoying a solid fleet, including a Bentley Mulsanne, Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Roadster and more! For those who prefer classic customs (and classic beauty), feast your eyes on two SouthSide Car Club masterpieces: a 1956 Chevy Bel Air convertible and 1957 Bel Air hardtop and the beautiful ladies posing with them. Both Bel Airs have been customized to look like they just rolled out from the dealership, but feature some modern updates that provide some finishing flair. Sexy Suzanne Stokes and Jessica Burciaga only help to round out the killer package. We also caught up with TJ Lavin and Divine 1 Customs to showcase TJ’s latest whip, his 1951 Ford Shoebox, which he calls “Forgiven.” It’s equal parts nostalgia and badass with its detailed WWII bomber theme. And if you can’t get enough of classics, check out Surf City Garage’s amazing vintage collection and read up on how House of Hotrods & Classics is one of the best shops in the nation to restore your own classic custom. Crack a cold one and lay back with this jam-packed issue – enjoy 85!

DUB EDITION AVALON
THROWBACK TYSON Talk about old school! That Throwback feature on Mike Tyson from Issue 2 brings back memories. I remember scoping out that issue from a friend and thinking to myself how Tyson had some sick rides. Of course, now those rides aren’t as impressive as other car collections that have since been featured in DUB, but back then, that was serious car game. Too bad he had to sell his rides, especially that Jag, when he went bankrupt. Frankie W. Via email
Wow! I would never have given the Toyota Avalon a second look before I saw it on your cover for Issue 84. The DUB Garage team turned it into a sleek and stylish ride that I wouldn’t mind driving. It’s no doubt a neck breaker on them custom 22” TIS Modular Wheels, which gives it that extra luxurious look. I’m not in the market for a new ride just yet, but if I were, the 2013 DUB Edition Toyota Avalon is a serious contender! Samson D. Via email Thanks for all the love on our DUB Edition Avalon, Samson! We pride ourselves in building rides we’d love to drive and made sure the 2013 Avalon was built to our specifications. We wanted to make a bold statement and think we did with the final outcome. Even Toyota executives couldn’t stop praising the work we did and that means a lot. But we also have plenty of other DUB Edition custom vehicles by Rockledge at various dealerships nationwide, so when you’re in the market for a new ride, make sure to check out our DUB Edition options!
BALLISTIC BJ BALDWIN The RECOIL video of BJ Baldwin flying over a Nissan GT-R in the desert in his trophy truck is insane! I must have seen it a dozen times now because it’s so awesome. I’m not really into off-road racing sports, but after reading his feature in your last issue, I did a bit of research and realized how badass the sport is. I think I’m going to have to follow Baldwin’s career a bit closer now. Phil Q. Via email Believe it or not, off-road racing is a very entertaining sport, Phil. It’s filled with action and speed and what makes it even better is that it’s all done in the craziest terrains possible! Driving on asphalt is one thing, but maneuvering off-road through rocks, sand, dirt and more is a totally different story. It takes talent and huge balls to really control a vehicle in these types of environments, not to mention being able to hit incredible speeds and race others for long periods of time. But BJ is one of the best and does it with some serious flair!
26 DUBMAG JULY/AUGUST 2013
There’s no denying that the once Undisputed Heavyweight Champion of the World has great taste in rides. He must have felt pretty horrible to part ways with such a fine collection, especially the super rare Jaguar XJ220. That supercar is a collectible that’s probably worth a whole lot more than the $800,000 he originally paid for it back in the day. Make sure to check out the new Throwback feature in future issues of DUB because we’ll be profiling some of our old school favorites.
DOOMSDAY TOYOTA TUNDRA I’m not really into the whole doomsday hype, but that A.R.E. x Level 7 Toyota Tundra is beyond insane! I’ve never seen a civilian vehicle that equipped before. That’s something that the SWAT team should be riding around in. All I know is that if sh*t ever went down, that’s one truck you’d want to be in. If he decides to customize trucks like that for others, I’d probably be down to have my truck done up like his! HvyHD85 Via email The loaded Toyota Tundra is seriously a beast! It’s one of those rides that can handle anything you throw at it, which is probably why so many doomsday fanatics are interested in the build. With so many features, it’s hard to pick out our favorite, but his custom Bushido sword holder is pretty cool. And even though it looks like a finished project, the owner is still adding more mods to it. We can just imagine what it’s going to look like when it’s completely done!

DUB AUTONEWSWIRE AUTOMOTIVE NEWS
2014 GM OWNERS RECEIVE NEW BENEFITS General Motors will provide 2014 model owners a number of benefits to improve customer satisfaction. First, they’ll receive five years of free access to RemoteLink Key Fob Services that will allow OnStar-equipped vehicles to remotely lock/unlock doors, activate the horn/lights and start the vehicle – even if they don’t pay for OnStar services. All the functions are accessible through a RemoteLink Mobile smartphone app that works with 36 different GM models. GM also will provide certain 2014 Buick, Chevrolet and GMC models free scheduled maintenance for two years or 24,000 miles (whichever comes first), with the plan covering four service visits that deal with oil changes and tire rotations.
FORD’S NEWEST ENGINE – THREE CYLINDERS, 52 POUNDS We know. We usually get excited by the big engines. Still, we can’t help but get a little worked up over this – the smallest engine for sale on the American market in many years. So small, in fact, that Ford sent it through airport security in a carry-on bag, with a couple of T-shirts, an iPad and some extra room. Next year’s Ford Fiesta will be available with a 1.0-liter, three-cylinder engine making about 123 hp. Yes, one liter. Its three cylinders have approximately the capacity of a small soda bottle. It weighs all of 52 pounds, and yes, the block fits into the little clear bins you’re supposed to put your shoes in before you get on the plane. It uses a single turbocharger and fuel injection to get a respectable 41 hp per cylinder, and actually has the highest power output per pound of any Ford engine. Right now it seems like a curiosity, but in Europe, three cylinder models can be had from Audi, BMW, Mini and Volkswagen. With stricter fleet-wide fuel economy regulations set to kick in in 2015, it’s only a matter of time before they’re offered for sale in the U.S. market — maybe even for sale in auto parts stores in little duffel bags for easy carrying. -Sean Tucker
PORSCHE 911 50TH ANNIVERSARY LIMITED EDITION The Porsche 911 turns 50 this year. Porsche plans to celebrate with a limited edition that recalls the first 911, unveiled where that car made its first appearance — the Frankfurt Motor Show. It’s a visual throwback – painted in a dark graphite grey or a light geyser grey like the original, sitting on custom 20-inch wheels that resemble the Fuchs set on its 1963 ancestor. Inside, instruments have green lettering and white needles like the classic, and the leather seats feature a fabric insert patterned after the 1960s interiors. In performance terms, though, it’s a bit of a step up from the original. The 50th anniversary edition carries the same 3.8-liter flat-six as the Carrera S, boosted to 430 hp (compared to 128 hp in the 1963 model). It sits in the body of the AWD version (it’s wider), but it’s RWD. Porsche says it’ll do 0-60 mph in 4.2 seconds with the seven-speed stick, or 3.8 seconds with the paddle-shifted, dual-clutch PDK auto. Only 1,963 will be built (get it?) and they’ll run about $124K in the US. -Sean Tucker

Built in the USA, they utilize race proven, rugged and precise digital stepper motor drives for smooth pointer readings and heightened resistance to shock and vibration. The Rally-Nav Red LED digital display includes standards like odometer and trip, in addition to providing useful satellite signal information, such as compass, heading and coordinates for navigation, an hourmeter for tracking vehicle maintenance, GPS date and time, and peak speed recall for tracking a sector best, corner entry speed, or perhaps just for the next time your teen or buddy borrow the keys. s an avid car builder, Joe Molina was already itching for his next creation as soon as he finished his ’73 Chevy C10 pickup truck. He immediately knew that the 1964 Cadillac Coupe de Ville (what would later be nicknamed “Ruby”) was the one when he laid eyes on it and decided to build it for his girlfriend, Morgan Bailey. Putting in his hard earned cash from working at a local Dodge dealership in Peoria, AZ, Molina put numerous man hours to finish the extensive build that took eight months to complete. As a member of a local car club, Severed Ties Custom Car and Truck Club Molina trusted his years of automotive knowledge and did most of the work, but also enlisted help from family and fellow club members. When contemplating the build, Molina knew it needed to feature three things: paint, interior and a banging sound system. Choosing the vibrant red was a no brainer for Molina since
the classic Caddy was already a head-turning ride and just needed a bit more glitz to really become an award-winning old school. To turn heads, he chose Ruby Slippers from the Vibrance Collection of PPG paints. For the interior, Molina wanted the Cadillac to keep its classic vibes while featuring a modern look and opted for a cabin that was completely re-upholstered with lots of chrome accents around the updated dash and a one-off center console. For the sound system, Molina chose to go with Rockford Fosgate products after a fellow club member suggested the audio manufacturer. He used a set of their POWER T2652-S 6.5” component speakers in each of the front kick panels and added a matching set for the rear deck, with all of them running off of a POWER T800-4ad 800W 4-channel amplifier. The trunk houses three POWER T0D212 12” subwoofers that runs on a POWER T1500-1bdCP 1,500W JULY/AUGUST 2013 DUBMAG 39
mono amplifier that’s vented through the rear deck to get all that heart-pounding bass up front. The iconic Rockford “diamond R” logo was then set into the trunk lid interior by JR from Coast to Coast Trophies. An Alpine INA-W900 double-din receiver rounds out the audio upgrades. Molina was blown away by the sound quality of the system since it was his first build with Rockford Fosgate, taking special note of the power output from the amplifiers. “It’s just amazing,” he describes. “I’m used to dealing with a way larger amount of gear to get this kind of sound. The whole team at Rockford Fosgate has been great and made me feel real comfortable.” Now that Ruby is all dressed up, Molina started to place the old school in several car shows and it’s been racking up numerous show wins. And he also admits that he’ll be using nothing else but Rockford Fosgate audio products on future builds he already has in the works.

ow Wow has long since dropped the Lil’ in his rapper moniker, but when we first caught up with the MC for Issue 5 back in 2000, he was fresh to the mic under the tutelage of producer and rapper extraordinaire Jermaine Dupri, alongside fellow rapper R.O.C. Despite being way too young to drive at the time, Bow Wow flaunted his love for some of JD’s (then) impressive fleet of rides. JD showed off a number of rides, including a Ferrari F355 Spyder, Ferrari 456M, Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon, Mercedes-Benz S-Class 500 and Bentley Continental. The Ferrari 456M sits on 18”HRE 547 rims, while the F355 Spyder features 18” x 8.5” front and 19” x 8.5” rear HRE 545 wheels. JD equipped his 2000 S-Class 500 Benz with 20” FAB design Type 6 rims. His 1999 Bentley Continental is fully represented by its trademark grille and the addition of multi-piece chrome 20” BRABUS Monoblock V and retrofitted fenders to accommodate the (then) huge wheels.
While the G-Wagon that JD drives is far from the ruggedness of the military version, you can bet that it will get him out of the worst of conditions in style.

hen DJ/producer Steve Aoki needs to test out new material for his albums, he makes sure to bump his latest tracks in his 2012 Audi A8 L W12 quattro, which is why he opted for the best sound system the dealership offered. “The car is an important tool for me to make sure the music is right before I put it out to the public,” he says when we caught up with him in L.A. during one of his breaks before his touring schedule got super busy.
“I made sure my Audi had the Bang & Olufsen audio system. That sh*t bangs. It has all the bass you need to really hear the song and that’s what I like to hear in my tracks.” Currently, he’s testing out new jams for his second album Neon Future, due out later this year. Growing up with a father who loved cars and had his own collection, Aoki naturally obtained that appreciation for fine rides, but never became overly obsessed. Despite having driven Ferraris and other exotic vehicles from his father’s collection, Aoki’s tastes are a bit more conservative with the Audi A8 as the most expensive ride he’s afforded himself, despite having such a successful music career. 48 DUBMAG JULY/AUGUST 2013

Aoki’s 2012 Audi A8 L W12 quattro sits on 22”x9.5” Avant Garde M310 wheels wrapped in 265/30R22 Nitto INVO tires.
“I spoiled myself with the A8,” he admits. “It’s the best car I’ve ever driven thus far. It has awesome performance and styling and outperforms other cars like it.” Before his A8, Aoki drove around the City of Angels in a BMW, but really took a liking to Audi when they hooked him up with a new car they were testing out a while back. “I was racing through L.A. and doing every trick in the book to see how the car would perform and it really surprised me. I immediately knew that I’d get an Audi next.” Besides the high-end sound system, Aoki’s opted to throw on a set of 22x9.5 Avant Garde M310 wheels wrapped in 265/30R22 Nitto INVO tires, which he says adds to the overall performance of the ride. “It’s the only tires I’ll use on my cars,” he admits. And despite his wild and crazy DJ/performer persona, where’s he vividly animated behind his turntables, Aoki’s actually a pretty chill person when he’s not in the public eye, which is reflected by his choice in vehicles. I live multiple lives,” he describes. “I’m pretty wild on stage, but off, I’m a pretty Zen-like dude. The Audi is more Zen and all about performance and sleekness. It’s kind of a mysterious car.”

Although he’s overly satisfied with his A8, Aoki has his eye on a Tesla next, since he’s a fan of fast hybrid supercars. “It’s one of those dream fantasy cars and I love the innovations the company is making as they continue to build electric speed demons,” he says, adding that he also owns a Prius and is really into environmentally friendly rides. But until he gets his Tesla, Aoki will enjoy his one-off Scion FR-S that he collaborated on with Scion and MV Designz to build. Taking six months to create, Aoki’s bespoke FR-S is an audiophile’s dream ride with more than $50,000 worth of work and stereo equipment from Pioneer, including a set of turntables in the rear. “The car is made for the DJ,” he says. “It’s incredible and I don’t think there’s anything like it on the market or has the technology Scion has put into it. The system really bumps and the overall sound is amazing. It’s like a party-mobile.” “The back opens up to reveal a DJ system complete with club-like lights, a hook up for a smog machine and GoPro HERO3 cameras to record all the action. “What I want to do is go on a road trip to Vegas and just pull over somewhere and do a flash mob on Twitter, telling everyone that I’m going to throw a free live party from the back of my Scion FR-S.” Aoki’s newest residency in Sin City is at the MGM Grand Hotel & Casino for his Neon Future nightclub experience that he does once a month inside the new Hakkasan club. The move ends his residency at the Wynn Las Vegas, where he aided in the launch of their Surrender nightclub as musical director in 2010 (and began the DJ-residency craze that has since taken over Las Vegas). 52 DUBMAG JULY/AUGUST 2013

Named after his next album, the Aoki takeover features a “really interesting vibe” that provides nightclub goers a different experience from any other clubs they have been to. “I worked with the dancers on the choreography to make sure everything was just right and helped developed all the visual aspects to really create this awesome show.” He’s also headlining daytime parties at Wet Republic that plays on the theme of his latest #Aokify iPhone app that allows users to customize their photos with wacky stickers picked out by Aoki himself. As one of the world’s most sought after EDM DJs and producers, Aoki’s life has been pretty non-stop for the last couple of years, with last year alone racking up more than 300 international shows. But this year, he’s decreased that number to finish his follow-up album to last year’s Wonderland (that earned him his first Grammy nomination for “Best Dance/ Electronica Album), Neon Future, which is nearly finished except for his chosen vocal collaborations. Even though it’s still made for the dance floors, Aoki describes it as his most emotional work yet, citing how he’s been extremely inspired in that last year and placed that all into this new album. While he’s placing the finishing touches on his album, Aoki will be off doing what he does best as he travels the world, providing the masses with his dope beats and wild stage presence, all the while capturing his adventures via his iconic “Aoki Jump.” Despite what many may think, his jumps are 100% Photoshop free, citing his great photographer for capturing his unique jumps he takes all across the globe to chronicle his journeys. “It all started when planking was cool,” he details. “I used to plank across the world and number each one. Then when the trend started to die out, I needed something new to put my stamp on all the cool places I was traveling to, so I started to jump. I travel with a photographer and videographer everywhere I go because I’m obsessed with documenting that specific moment of my life. Now I’m obsessed with finding interesting places to do my signature jump.” PHOTO: COURTESY OF JUSTIN DE SOUZA

For the album, Kingston decided to take a different approach when it came to producers and went with young names new to the industry instead of his usual roster of top-notch producers like RedOne or Stargate (although J.R. Rotem, who discovered him and produced his past two albums, is still the executive producer on this one). “Since I’ve been out in L.A., I’ve met a lot of up-and-coming producers who have a great sound to them. Sometimes it’s not about working with the biggest names in the game, but about working with the young guy bringing heat. We’ve created a great body of work with this album.” But Kingston does have some of hip-hop’s hottest names as guest appearances, including collaborations with 2 Chainz, Busta Rhymes and T.I. After the album drops, Kingston is looking at a busy summer filled with non-stop shows, radio promos and more, which will take him away from Kingston’s Bentley Mulsanne is a comfy vehicle that fits his large stature and sits on 24” Estrella Aries wheels wrapped in Nitto NT420 285/30R24 tires.

Kingston is currently flaunting a Mercedes-Benz G63, Lamborghini Aventador, Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Roadster and Bentley Mulsanne on the streets of Los Angeles, opting for the matte-white Bentley as his daily driver. He traded his Maybach for the Bentley because he wanted something that provided a bit more comfort for his frame– a go-to trait for most of his rides. “I’m a big guy at 6’3” 280 lbs., so I need room,” he says. “I like to be able to recline and relax, especially if there’s traffic (like there always is in L.A.). But even though it’s a big car, it’s still prestigious and real luxurious, which is my preferred style in cars.” He admits that he wanted a Mulsanne after T.I. got his and saw Drake flashing his while out at L.A. nightlife hotspot Greystone Manor. 62 DUBMAG JULY/AUGUST 2013

that market and made sure we aligned with venues and brands that were hot. I saw the power of that kind of marketing (which translated to selling the building for the highest price ever for an apartment building in Chicago) and that led me to realize that in today’s world, the consumer can sense genuine coolness whether the product is actually cool or not. I already had a music festival and arena football team and really wanted to grow those elements in the entertainment sphere and show consumers that we understand and have a finger on the pulse of all the hottest things out right now. What would you say is your personal secret to success? There are a lot of people who are great visionaries who have great ideas and the thing that I see has out of college. We then started to do a bit of property management and then we started to build apartments and that grew into building a high-rise in Chicago called EnV. From there, I learned about parties and promotions because I marketed the building in a very unconventional way. That high-rise actually won the “High-Rise of the Year” in 2010 in the midst of the recession. We got into several businesses from there. I’ve always been entrepreneurial and now our core business is in 17 states and more than 50 cities. We’re the 34th largest operator of apartments in the country. But we’ve also recently gotten into entertainment ventures, such as owning an arena football team in San Antonio Texas, hosting an EDM music festival in Chicago called Wavefront and opening up several restaurants, as well as getting into the publication business. How did the EnV Group of your business begin? When I finally got the high-rise in Chicago and knew I’d be in that market, I decided I wanted to promote it differently and really use the power of social media to get the “cool” people in tune with what I was doing. I’ve had several business transactions where I’ve had to will it across the finish line anytime, even when I was weak. For example, for our high-rise in Chicago, I had to go out and get a $75 million loan to finance the $100 million highrise in December 2008, which was when the credit markets were all crashing. I went through 126 banks; you either have to be certifiably crazy or be convinced that something will happen. The bank that finally said yes got paid back handsomely. So how do you define success? A lot of the extra business things I do is not just for the money but because I’m passionate about them all. I love creating new things and not following in everybody’s footsteps. I define success by living my own vision until the end without any regrets. It’s all about the drive and willingness to never quit. Do you have any inspirations? I like visionaries who aren’t scared to take risks. Interestingly enough, I hated Mark Cuban since I’m a San Antonio Spurs fan because he would sit across from me at games and I’d think, “Man, this guy is always making an ass out of himself.” But now that I own my own arena football team and saw clips of how I react at games, I realized that Cuban is just a competitor and not doing it to show off or anything. I have a lot of respect for him as a businessman and entrepreneur because he’s all heart and wants his team to just win. I’m a military historian guy so the other person I admire is General Patton because he made bold moves and risks and backed them up with performance. I’m a visionary naturally and those two are a combination of who I am.
So where does your interest in cars begin? I’ve always been a car guy ever since I was 15 and owned my first car, which was a red Jeep Wrangler. Fixing up cars and customizing how I want them has been a passion of mine for a while. For me, it’s not about owning a $500K or $30K vehicle; it’s more about having that relationship or bond with the vehicle and customizing it to your personal specifications. I can be having the worst day ever, but when I get into a special car and drive down the highway, and then hear it humming exactly the way I like puts me at peace. Either you get that or you don’t, and if you don’t, then we can’t even talk. For me, a car has to look sexy. I don’t care what it is, but it has to have a real snap of sex appeal. Whether it’s a Lamborghini or truck, it has to have some aspect that makes it sexy for me. I’ve had everything from a Ford Expedition jacked up with big wheels and fender flares to my last car, which was a Lamborghini Aventador, which I didn’t have to do a whole lot to. You currently have a Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon and a Maseratti Quattroporte. Can you describe why each one of those rides is so special to you? The G-Wagon is dressed in a beautiful matte black with white interior with black piping. It’s an amazing vehicle that can be a family car while still being super fast in terms of performance. It’s a practical vehicle with lots of speed. The same thing goes for the Maseratti. I like vehicles that are versatile from a standpoint 74 DUBMAG JULY/AUGUST 2013
Lynd’s Maseratti Quattroporte is fitted with 22” Savini SV30C brushed and matte black wheels.
where you can carry multiple passengers without sacrificing speed. I have to usually drive a lot of people around, whether I’m taking clients to see a building or taking them out to lunch. You can’t really do that in a two-seater [Lamborghini] Aventador. I like bigger cars, but don’t want to sacrifice performance and that’s what I get with both the G-Wagon and Quattroporte. As a passionate car enthusiast, you’ve probably had a lot of different cars coming in and out of your garage. But out of all of them, which is your absolute favorite? I’ve had it all. But my Bentley Continental Supersports is my favorite to date even though it was only a two-door coupe. It was super fast and the interior details were like a piece of jewelry. I gave it to the ex-wife and I regret it. But I did get a different Bentley recently, the Mulsanne. It’s a bigger four-door Bentley and I got it in a matte black paint scheme and opted for a gloss black where all the chrome pieces were. The inside sports a white interior with black piping and I added a set of powdered-coated black wheels to it. It’s really just a beautiful vehicle. Since you’ve had so many vehicles, do you have a dream car still? You know, I like just too many cars, but I’m thinking a Bugatti is probably the dream car because it’s like a Bentley Super Sport on steroids from a performance perspective. But it’s still a very beautiful car that looks as if it’s a fine painting or a luxurious piece of jewelry. Who knows when I’ll get it though? I’m always one
real estate venture away from a windfall at any time. But because of my enthusiasm for cars, I’m the type of guy who prefers a small house with a large garage filled with cars rather than a big house with a two-car garage. Do you have any top customizations that you add to all your cars? I always have to add a new set of wheels. To me, the wheels are something that can set the car apart from others on the road like it, without having to drastically change the paint or something of that nature. I like custom wheels and tires that can help boost performance and the look of the car. That’s always my go-to move when customizing. From there, the stereo is next. I’m a huge music lover given the fact that I have an EDM festival and I love that scene. I always want to hear electronic music at its peak performance so having a jamming stereo system is a must. Then, if I feel that the car needs it, I’ll do a custom interior or add performance-based things. Do you have any advice to aspiring businessmen? Don’t ever pass up an opportunity for a paid education or learn from every opportunity. I say that because I’ve done a million jobs in my life, and I have never in my career wasted an opportunity to throw 100% of my brain power and effort behind whatever I was doing. I learned, watched and paid attention to every single aspect of the task at hand and learned from those experiences. You never know when you’re going to use that knowledge again.

he Miami, Florida stop of the Toyota Avalon Presents the Monster Energy DUB Show Fueled by Nitto was the car enthusiasts’ destination on Saturday, May 18, 2013. Thousands of Floridians flocked to the Miami Beach Convention Center and were greeted by a fleet of the hottest cars and bikes from that corner of the country. Car culture in Miami is as hot and thick as Florida’s humid weather. Diehard automotive fans were suddenly flanked by countless exotic cars and warmly greeted by equally exotic-looking women as soon as they entered the convention center.
The best South Florida speed shops and customizers came out in full force. WTW Car Accessories had the largest display at the show with 40 showcars packed nicely in their booth. The Auto Firm showcased a star-studded fleet of vehicles from “Real Housewives Miami” reality star Cristina Rice’s Porsche Panamera, Pittsburg Pirate outfielder Starling Marte’s Range Rover Sport, Colombian dancer Beto “Zumba” Perez’s Fisker Karma and Ray J’s Rolls-Royce Ghost. MC Customs brought a bunch of wicked rides nastier than LeBron’s menacing dunks. We suppose you can call their booth the “Bulls & Pony Show” with the number of Lamborghinis and Ferraris on display, which coincidentally brought them “Best Vehicle of Show” and “Best Booth of Show” awards. Cartel Customs created a South Beach-themed booth, complete with painted sidewalks, buildings, palm trees and cars parked along “Ocean Drive.” Wheel companies were not to be outdone by their friends at shops in South Florida. Diesel Wheels had a smörgåsbord approach to their booth with Lowriders, lifted trucks and everything in between that seemed to satisfy everybody’s automotive palate. American

Force Wheels invaded the show with their army of big trucks! Forgiato showcased their newest wheel designs on immaculate cars from Exclusive Motoring. Savini Forged made the cross-country trek from Southern California and teamed up with their local distributor Elite Wheel Warehouse, boasting their latest rims on a variety of rides, including a Mercedes-Benz CLS, Ford Mustang BOSS, BMW 750i and Bentley GT. Lexani Wheels also made the arduous trip from the West Coast to show their newest products and to join the festivities in South Beach. Customizer of the two-wheeled vehicle variety House of Thunder weren’t quiet about their eye-catching custom Harley-Davidson motorcycles on display. DUB Garage dealer, Elite Roads, had some nice cars sitting on TIS and
Dropstars Wheels. Pro Auto Sound had music blasting all day showing off their customizing talents and at one point were so loud that they interrupted 2 Chainz’ live performance. Fans and guests were also treated to a stellar concert with performances by Chi-Town’s Finest, Y.D., Lantana, Cap 1, French Montana and 2 Chainz. A pit stop at the Monster Energy Lounge was a must to complete the car show and concert experience. The famous Monster Energy Girls took pictures and signed their limited edition poster books and were also able to recharge with free samples of DUB Edition Baller’s Blend and Mad Dog Energy Punch. DUB would like to thank all the guests, car clubs and vendors that helped make the Miami tour stop a memorable one! TOM CLANCY’S SPLINTER CELL: BLACKLIST PUBLISHER: UBISOFT | DEVELOPER: UBISOFT TORONTO | PLATFORMS: XBOX 360, PLAYSTATION 3, WII U, PC WWW.SPLINTERCELL.UBI.COM
Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell series continues with Blacklist, which follows the events of the last game, Conviction, where the fictional President of the United States orders the corrupt Third Echelon terminated and then forms the Fourth Echelon, a team of elite operatives drawn from different agencies that’s commanded by former Third Echelon agent Sam Fisher. While the third Echelon shuts down and the Fourth Echelon activates, a group of terrorists initiate a terror ultimatum called “The Blacklist,” a deadly countdown of escalating terrorist attacks on U.S. assets. Fisher and his crew must hunt these terrorists down and stop the Blacklist countdown before it reaches zero. Blacklist introduces a new gameplay mechanic called killing in motion, allowing the player to highlight targets and take them out in quick succession, with a new fluidity while on the run. The
game is set in a third-person perspective so the protagonist and the objects around him are visible. There will be voice integration with Xbox 360’s Kinect peripheral, which will allow gamers to say things to distract enemies and then attack. The game will also allow players to use the Kinect sensor to control the protagonist by yourself instead of using the Xbox 360 Controller.
GRAND THEFT AUTO V PUBLISHER: ROCKSTAR GAMES | DEVELOPER: ROCKSTAR NORTH | PLATFORMS: XBOX 360, PLAYSTATION 3 WWW.ROCKSTARGAMES.COM
The 15th game in the series is set in the fictional Los Santos in the state of San Andreas. According to Rockstar, the game is supposed to be their biggest open world game yet and will concentrate on the “pursuit of the almighty dollar.” Visitors to the greater metropolis of Los Santos and the countryside of Blaine County will encounter faded celebrities, meth heads, party people, violent gangs, hikers, bikers and every other manner of colorful characters. It will feature three playable protagonists – Michael, a career criminal turned wealthy suburban dad; Franklin, the gangbanger looking to leave the life behind by taking a repo job; and Trevor, a drug dealing violent lunatic. During story missions, players can switch between the main protagonists as they work together to accomplish various missions. Outside of missions, players can swap between the characters and explore the game’s open world, which includes a fully-fledged ecosystem where the camera zooms out to a “Google Earth-style” perspective when switching characters and then drops in wherever the chosen character is. The game will also feature more vehicles than any other Grand Theft Auto to date, including a ride array of cars, trucks, bikes, planes, helicopters and more.

“MOST CAR PEOPLE DON’T TAKE IT TO THIS LEVEL, BUT THIS CAR TOOK AN EXORBITANT AMOUNT OF THOUGHT PROCESS AND LOTS OF DETAIL TO GET IT TO WHERE IT’S AT NOW.” – MISHA MUNOZ OF DIVINE 1 CUSTOMS

hile some builds have an end goal in mind, others are completely random with the outcome a surprise to all. Such was the case for Misha Munoz from Divine 1 Customs in Las Vegas, NV when it came time to build T.J. Lavin’s one-off 1951 Ford Shoebox Deluxe. Munoz had already worked with Lavin on past builds and had often talked about creating an old Shoebox-type vehicle, but never discussed the theme until a year after finding the base car in an old barn in Bakersfield, CA. The car was in pretty bad shape, rusted with a horrible chop job and bad body work, describes Munoz, but they both knew it would suffice for the future build. About six months after getting the car and throwing around ideas, the pro BMX rider was seriously injured while out on the Dew Tour, which put the project on hold. When the conversation about the car started up again, Lavin knew he
wanted some sort of WWII bomber plane theme for his custom creation, but left the critical details and decisions to the hands of Munoz and his crew. Once Divine 1 Customs painted it olive drab green and chopped the roof, Munoz realized he was in for quite an extensive build. What was meant to be just a normal build turned into a 2012 SEMA Show project vehicle after KICKER got involved and wanted to sponsor the sound system. “It was all business once KICKER provided us with a deadline,” Munoz details. Laboring night and day to make the deadline, the vehicle was finally ready for its grand debut after about eight months. The finished product was a hit at SEMA, with everyone talking about the vintage ride. With a newly chopped roof, sheet metal and bodywork, shaved keyholes, custom handles and modified trunk and wipers, the Shoebox grabs attention

with its olive drab green paint scheme an intricate airbrushed pin-up girl and lettering that makes the vehicle look as if it’s a bomber plane on four wheels. The number 76 represents Lavin’s birth year, while the bombs symbolize his daughter’s birth date and the pin-up girl is a tribute to his wife. Getting it to where it’s practically kissing the ground, Divine 1 Customs used air ride compressors and air valves that Munoz hid in old ammo boxes and added bullet-style toggle switches that activate the four corners. Inside, there are handcrafted aluminum door panels with rivets that match the aircraft carrier seats. An old army surplus tent was then used as the cushion covers and for rear deck material. And to provide an authentic bomber feel, Munoz added bomberstyle gauges that resemble an early bomber cockpit. KICKER provided the stereo components, while Munoz built a custom bomb-themed subwoofer enclosure that houses the four 10” subwoofers that sit behind the custom aluminum bomber-style seats. “The build was definitely the most intense build we’ve ever done,” Munoz admits. “Most car people don’t take it to this level, but this car took

an exorbitant amount of thought process and lots of detail to get it to where it’s at now.” Besides Munoz and his Divine 1 Customs crew, Lavin is more than happy with the finished result. “The car went through a few different phases of the build, but once I found the theme Divine 1 went nuts,” Lavin comments. “I couldn’t be more pleased with the result. My wife on the side as a pin-up, my daughter’s birthday as the bombs, and my birthday year on the back is rad, too!” But Lavin wasn’t the only one impressed with the vehicle; everyone at SEMA couldn’t stop taking photos of the unique classic. “Everyone was blown away with just how much work had been done on the car,” Munoz says. “Even one of the directors of the SEMA Show told me that it’s the only car that’s made him stop in his tracks and come back day after day to look at it over again. He heard about the car during roll in and had to come shake hands with me. This dude sees more cars than I do and I build them for a living, so it was a huge honor to be told that.”

outhern California’s SouthSide Car Club is considered one of the scene’s best Lowrider clubs, known for their clean, period-correct vehicles that embody a sense of nostalgia. Only allowing 1956-1965 Chevys in the club, all of the club’s cars feature the most sought after and hardto-find Chevy accessories, which can sometimes make the build difficult and expensive. But to SouthSide’s car club members, it’s worth the time and money since the outcome is nothing less than beauty on four wheels. For member Chuy, customization has been in his blood since he was 16 years old. Now 43, the veteran builder was actually approached by SouthSide members to join the club after seeing his attention-grabbing vehicles at past car shows.

A club member for the past four years now, Chuy has built practically everything under the sun and has outdone himself with his slick ’56 Bel Air convertible that took 18 months to restore. When he finished his ’63 Chevy Bel Air convertible, he needed a new base for his next masterpiece and found the ’56 Bel Air convertible on eBay. After shipping it out from Colorado, Chuy went straight to work on his latest customization, despite it already being in good condition.
Chuy spruced up the original colors on the car, added hydraulics, power windows, power seats and more, but kept the Bel Air looking as as original as possible. However, he admits that the biggest challenge to restoring a vehicle to it’s original condition is finding the parts and the patience needed to restore these cars since they require in-depth details to make them just right. Currently, the ’56 Bel Air is completely restored, but Chuy is thinking of adding air conditioning to it in the near future. 136 DUBMAG JULY/AUGUST 2013

What made you want to become a model? Growing up in the sunshine state of Florida and seeing all the beautiful girls on the beaches and in the magazines put thoughts in my head. It really inspired me and made me realize that I could become a model someday. And I secretly hoped to pursue that goal. How did you first get into the industry? I started modeling when I was a little girl for local clothing stores and newspapers in Naples, FL. I then went to a modeling school when I was about 13. I have always loved the business, and when they ask you in school what you want to be, I would say I wanted to be a model and an actress. I knew I wouldn’t have much of a modeling career in Naples or the Everglades, so I decided to send out my photos and resume to some talent and modeling agencies in Miami to see what would happen. I was contacted by more than 20 agencies and they were all calling me to go on casting calls. And luckily, I was fortunate enough to book my very first casting for a Ruffles commercial. I think early success really helped push me to keep going and to pursue my dreams. How did you go about becoming a Playmate Model? I started modeling and booking commercials in Miami when I was about 17 or 18. It was a very exciting time. I went to the Playboy Millennium Search Bus in Miami. I wore a fishnet bikini with butterfly patches on the nipples and I think I caught their attention! I was so happy when they called me back and asked me to go to Chicago to do a test shoot. Then when Hef personally approved my shoot, I started my playmate pictorial shoot. And I went to LA when my issue hit the newsstands to do PR and promotion as Playboy’s “Playmate of the Month” in February 2000. Getting on that Playboy bus was one of the best decisions I made! What did that feel like? I’ve always thought Playboy is a classy magazine! And I believe that it is a form of art, and it is a personal expression. Marilyn Monroe set the bar as the first centerfold. I feel very honored to be in that company. Overall, I remember it just feeling like it was the right fit for me and my career. It was my calling; I was very excited about it, but I was also still a bit nervous in a way. Everything was moving so quickly and happening so suddenly. What other notable modeling gigs have you done? I have done commercials in Venezuela and Costa Rica, and Heineken Beer spots in the Dominican Republic. I also did a lot of international commercials and print work, and loved the opportunity to work all over the world. That’s what I want to continue doing now. I’ve been featured on many magazine covers and in many different magazines and catalogs for anything and everything. I am very excited about launching my acting career. My first lead role in an independent film called Off Hollywood, which is currently wrapping up. It should debut sometime in the next year. What’s left for you to achieve in the modeling business? I am currently focused on my business career and modeling jobs that come my way. I feel that my experience has led me to where I am now in my consulting business, Twist Consulting, which is
very exciting. I’m launching a lingerie line and creating a new nightclub in Chicago and Vegas. What are your favorite characteristics about yourself? I would have to say being positive, caring and giving with all my heart. I just like to be happy and I like being a little ray of sunshine for everyone; it makes them feel better and that makes me happy. What’s the best part about being a model? What about the worst? The best part is the clothes! And, of course, all of the cool people you meet. I’ve always loved traveling, so getting to go to so many new places is really exciting, and I’m looking forward to more traveling this year. Honestly, I’ve had such great experiences that I can’t think of anything that’s not 100 percent positive! You’re also a businesswoman, how did you go about getting your foot in the door? I have a very unique set of life experiences that took me all over the world. I have seen and done more than most people will do in two life times! Thankfully, I’ve got a lot of energy! My unique perspective creates the real value behind Twist Consulting. My clients see the benefit of utilizing a very creative brain that has experienced many cultures and industries, especially my career in entertainment and modeling. Lately, I have been applying my ideas to many different businesses. I’m promoting nightlife, premium alcohol brands, lingerie, TV production and music. I look at the business model and the consumer in a very different way, and it usually leads to some very fresh ideas. For example, with the Palms’ nightlife venue, I came up with the idea of a more interactive club experience that would include the patrons into the programming through costumes, roving magicians and sexy shows. I find the current format of expensive DJ’s bottle service and sparklers flat boring. I am a big fan of the music and love the DJ’s, but I think it is time to add in some more interactive fun amenities as well.

scar Nuñez is no stranger to building beautiful custom classics. A while back, we showcased his ’56 Chevy Bel Air that he dubbed “Timeless,” which featured a Rolex watch in the dash that signified the car’s timeless presence. Now he’s back on the scene with an impressive ’57 Bel Air that’s also a SouthSide beauty.
For the past 20 years, Nuñez has been rebuilding and restoring classic ’56-’64 Chevys and his latest build showcases the perfection of his talents. Taking about a year to build, the process was quite simple for the veteran customizer who was used to scouring for original parts for the classic. “Whatever it originally came with was how I wanted it,” he says, mentioning that the car wasn’t in bad condition when he first acquired it. “I wanted it to look as if it had just rolled out from the dealership.” JULY/AUGUST 2013 DUBMAG 149
Built to be used recreationally, Nuñez didn’t go over the top with modifications and kept it clean and simple, a requirement for all SouthSide vehicles. Instead, he opted for a few upgrades like hydraulics, electronic lights in the interior and an updated stereo system. Compared to past restorations, this one was easy to complete, with some of the work done by Nuñez himself. “I find it more rewarding to work on a car yourself than taking it to the shop and letting them do it all,” he explains. “Sometimes they do what they want to it without any say so from the owner, which isn’t what I want with my customizations.” Although Nuñez could get his money back and then some if he sold the ’57 Bel Air, he’s opting to keep it and plans to make it his “special occasions” ride.

How did you get into modeling? I started modeling eight years ago. I first got into it by sending my pictures to Stuff and Maxim magazines.
So what’s your dream car? This Bel Air actually. I love classic cars so much and believe it or not, this is my mom’s favorite car, too!
What’s been your most memorable modeling gig to date? My most memorable modeling job was definitely my first job in New York. It was my first time on a plane and my first time experiencing it all. New York is now one of my favorite places.
What did you think of Bel Air? I thought it was absolutely beautiful and wished I could have taken it out for a ride. I loved the seats, how comfortable and roomy it is inside and, of course, the color.
Besides modeling, are you working on any side projects? Actually a few months ago, I started my own online clothing boutique with my best friend called Sailor and Saint. It’s going amazing so far and I’m really excited about that. Check it out at www.sailorandsaint.com!
What traits do you look for in a guy? I love a man who is ambitious, strong, can make me laugh and has a good personality. I really love a man who can make me smile for no reason. Any turn-offs? Laziness is a big turn-off to me or someone who tries to tell me what to do.
What’s your idea of a romantic date? I think anything my boyfriend plans without me knowing anything about it is romantic. Someone going out of their way for you to make you happy is very romantic, no matter what it is - dinners, beaches, movies, Disneyland… How’s it feel to be considered a sex symbol? I love it sometimes, but most of the time I don’t consider myself one at all! [Laughs] I’m way to goofy, but it’s nice to know some people think I’m a sex symbol. What do you think is your best characteristic? I’d like to think I’m very caring, would do anything for my family and sometimes a little funny.

ustomization shops are a dime a dozen these days, but what truly separates the best from the rest is the quality of work and attention to detail that the shop puts into each and every vehicle that enters their shop. In Mansfield, TX (a suburb of Fort Worth), House of Hotrods & Classics is the crème de la crème, churning out dream cars for all their customers. The one-stop shop started by owner Mark Eddins is known for helping create some of the finest customizations, whether it’s a hotrod, classic or newer model vehicle. But the now popular shop wasn’t always open to the public, first created as a place for Eddins’ personal creations after having numerous disappointing experiences at other places in the area. Taking matters into his own hands, House of Hotrods & Classics began with a few hired hands working on all the owner’s cars before word spread like wildfire about the quality and work that the personal shop was pushing out. The 9-acre shop is known to do it all, but specializes in hotrods and classics, providing all the exact details needed to restore such old school toys. “We have lots of restomods where we do engine swaps and lots of full restorations,” says Beau Harrison, the shop’s lead technician. At any time, there are about 35-40 vehicles in the shop, waiting their turn to be beautified, with the duration of builds varying between a few months

Expect your vehicle to get the VIP treatment, whether you’re dishing out loads of cash or just looking to enhance a few things thanks to the skilled artisans, master technicians and master craftsman who have years of experience. “Our guys can handle it all, from old school cars to newer rides,” Harrison says. “Even though we have so many cars at the shop at any given time, these guys make sure to take their time on each car so that everything is done right.” Besides their top-quality and award-winning custom cars, expect nothing but optimal customer service as soon as you walk through their doors. Designers guide customers along their journey to create their dream car and present them with a solid plan to getting it done. Clients are also involved in every step of the process, from parts to paint, bodywork to custom accessories. “We work with any budget and try to accommodate our customers’ wishes when building the cars,” Harrison explains. “We’ll provide guidelines and renderings so the customer can visually get a sense of how everything will look once it’s done.”

And unlike other customization shops, House of Hotrods & Classics prides themselves on being “every man’s shop” since they don’t just cater to big spenders. “We’re more than happy to work on small jobs for the average Joes who live here locally. We don’t do $200K jobs everyday, but when we do, we make sure to appreciate those jobs, while also appreciating the little guys who keep us afloat each day.” Constantly on the grind with customers’ builds, Harrison admits that the shop would like to one day create a one-off contender for the annual Detroit Autorama’s Ridler Award competition, which promotes creativity, engineering and workmanship. “That’s our dream,” he confesses. “That’s the highest award you can get. im Miller, founder of Surf City Garage Enthusiast Grade Detailing Products, has been a car guy all of his life. It all started in 1958 when he was a young boy and his dad brought home a Chevy Sidestep pickup truck, which Tim still owns today. As a teen in Southern California, he watched his older brother work on and race his ’62 Pontiac Grand Prix on weekends and dreamt of having his own car when he was old enough. When he turned 16 in 1970 and with money saved up from working summers, Tim bought his first car, a ’67 Pontiac GTO 4-speed with a 400 cubic-inch motor. Like Tim with his dad’s ‘58 Chevy as a child
his older brother, he raced every weekend at local Southern California tracks, such as Orange County International, Irwindale, Carlsbad and the infamous Lions Drag Strip. Miller’s passion for muscle cars never faded and grew by leaps and bounds since his teenage years. Now, with a collection of more than 100 of the finest vintage muscle cars that ever came out of Detroit, the Surf City Garage fleet of American Muscle is one of the biggest and best in the country. “We have more than 100 vintage muscle cars that we personally maintain, including some of the hottest ones from the ’50s, ’60s and ’70s. Cars like Camaros, Shelbys, Cudas and…well, you name it…if Detroit built it to go fast, we’ve got it,” he explains. 170 DUBMAG JULY/AUGUST 2013

All of the cars in his collection never just stay inside the Surf City Garage facility in Huntington Beach, California. They are actually driven on the road periodically because Miller believes that nothing looks and feels better than driving one his cars on the streets. But when you do step into Surf City Garage, you are transported back in time. A Flying A gas station, just like how you would see it in the ’50s, is housed inside the building. There’s a 22-foot long neon Buick dealership sign, a neon Pontiac dealership sign, an original Chevrolet Super Service sign, a Shelby Showroom, a Corvette Corner, a Chevrolet Way, a MOPAR Alley, a Pontiac Row and more. His car collection includes a red and white ’58 Corvette (the first car that he restored), a ’68 Shelby GT500, his wife’s

’54 Polo White Corvette, a turquoise and white ’66 Chevy Bel Air hardtop and an ivory Cameo ’67 GTO Coupe, to name a few. Although it looks like a museum inside because of the amount of memorabilia, vintage motorcycles, cars and trucks from the
’50s through ’70s, Surf City Garage is really a garage with a complete restoration shop where craftsmen and mechanics maintain the collection and restore new acquisitions. When you have more than 100 vintage muscle cars, the work never stops!

or bike builder Joey Hensley of Back Yard Baggers in Winston Salem, NC, modifying bikes with the wow factor is what he does best. Having been building Harleys for only three years , Hensley has already perfected the formula to an award-winning bike, as proven by his No. 25 custom transformation of a stock HarleyDavidson Electra Glide into a show-stopping trophy winner. Built about a year ago, Hensley wanted a color combination that was both over the top and would really catch people’s attention and decided on a powder-coated lime green with black and silver leafing. But the conversation starter is the No. 25 on the gas tank. “Everyone who sees the bike walks over to know what the number stands for,” Hensley says. “A lot of people thought it was the size of the wheel, but it’s really the day my son was born.” Another highlight of the bike that adds to its wow factor is its suicide shifters, which replace traditional shifters. “It’s one of my favorite
features on the bike,” he admits. “Most people usually see you pulling the clutch with your hands and using your foot to shift it, but when they see me riding it, they see that I have to pull the clutch on the lever that sticks out from the left side. They call it a suicide shift because it’s like you’re trying to commit suicide because it’s dangerous to ride like that.” Hensley’s other favorite attribute of the bike is its custom air ride system that he’s well known for in the scene. “I have a custom air ride that I’ve built on these bikes that I’ve pretty much mastered,” he explains. “With other air ride systems, you have to wait a while until the bike lifts up once you hit the switches, but my bike immediately jumps off the ground so there’s no waiting. It gets a lot of attention from people when I have to go and ride it somewhere.” Since it’s won numerous awards at shows, Hensley has decided that the bike needed to undergo a transformation and is currently working on revamping the entire bike.
