hen you’re the talk of SEMA, you’re going to be gracing our pages – that’s how it works. The first time we saw LB Performance’s Ferrari 458 Italia and Nissan R35 GT-R preSEMA teaser pics on Instagram, you had to pick our jaws up off the floor. Their aggressive widebodies coupled with slammed suspensions were winning formulas. We knew we had to get the full story from the man himself, Mr. Wataru Kato and his Liberty Walk/LB Performance tuning house and LTMW who helped make the two builds possible. We’re far from finished. Move over to our big event recaps. The 2013 SEMA Show is always an integral part in the automotive universe and our DUB LIVE! exhibit is always expected to deliver. TS DESIGNS Topo and his TS Designs crew are the sh*t! I’ve been a fan of Topo’s work for years now and am always amazed with the cars he widens out. That guy isn’t afraid to cut up anything and that widebody Corvette and Lambo he did for SEMA are crazy sick! I’d be scared to chop up such fine rides like that, but if you’re called the “Widebody King,” it obviously comes natural to you. I’m looking to hit up Topo to chop up my next ride when I can afford it! Edgar P.

It surprised us, too, to find out that Ne-Yo was a part of a car club. You usually don’t hear about celebrities as car club members too often, which is why we made sure to catch up with our favorite crooner to get the 411 on his unique car club. His Compound Low Life Car Club looks like a great group of people with some nice rides. If we lived in the ATL, we’d be trying to become members, too!

It seems Juicy J is everywhere in the music scene! I’m an old school Three Six Mafia fan and now my kids are jamming to his music thanks to his collaborations with the likes of Katy Perry, Justin Bieber and Miley Cyrus. His decision to become a solo artist has really paid off! But if I was him, I’d have a flashier garage than his with all that money flowing in. His Rolls-Royce Ghost is cool and all, but a rapper of his caliber should be rolling more rides IMO.

STATE OF NATE I still remember Nate’s first feature in DUB when he had his massive Hummer H2. He’s definitely come a long way from the H2 and has a pretty dope garage. I like how he made both the Cadillac and Porsche his own by changing the exterior. It adds a bit of his outgoing personality to his collection. I’m a huge Knicks fan so he used to be a favorite player of mine and I’ve always admired his work ethic and still cheered for him when he moved to different teams. Hopefully, you’ve got a couple million dollars sitting around, unused. You see, the builder of the world’s fastest street-legal car has a problem. You’re not buying their cars. When Bugatti designed the Veyron, they planned to build just 300 of the cars. That worked out fine. They sold them all. But along the way, they decided there was demand for a topless version of the 250-plus-mph two-seater, and built another 150 Veyrons in convertible trim. Those haven’t sold as well. In fact, the Volkswagen-owned company still has 40 of the cars - or about $85 million worth - left to sell. They won’t design the Veyron’s replacement, they say, until all of these are spoken for. So if you’re holding out for the

Veyron’s replacement, they need you to step up and buy one of these first. To help move the last of the Veyrons, Bugatti has launched a new “Dynamic Drive Experience” tour. They’ll be bringing the Veyron droptop to a number of closed airport runways around the United States, allowing potential buyers to open

up the throttle and see what going over 200 mph with the top down feels like. So, come on, cheapskates. Open up your checkbooks. We want to see what Bugatti engineers can do next, and they won’t show us until you stop hoarding your millions.

SURFING SILVER ARROW Mercedes-Benz took their sponsorship of big wave rider Garrett McNamara to the next level by creating the “Silver Arrow of the Seas.” An AMGinspired surfboard to help Garrett conquer the massive wave breaks at Nazaré North Canyon in the north of Portugal. Ad agency BBDO Portugal thought that since Mercedes-Benz officially supports McNamara with vehicles on the road, they should also provide him with official vehicles in the ocean. The surfboard features a telemetry system: a transmitter inside Garrett’s wetsuit measures his surfing performance. The board was created specifically for McNamara’s trademark riding style and tailored for catching big waves.

THE OFF-ROAD DRAGON The Indian auto market is quickly booming, with affordable 4x4s in high demand. Longtime Indian automaker Mahindra is a staple in the market and designer Makrand Patil has designed a new SUV concept to showcase how the brand needs to evolve. The Mahindra Komodo 4×4 Concept is 20 | DUB MAGAZINE 2014

meant for the wild just like the Komodo Dragon that it’s named for says Patil in a prior interview. He also mentions that it took four months to complete the project with his friend, Valery Dimov. The SUV is supposed to be the perfect SUV for the Indian terrain and can be used anywhere.

he Mercedes-Benz Sprinter is more than just a van to All Star Customs – it’s a luxurious executive vehicle, and their latest conversion reflects what they think a Viera Sprinter should look like and how it should function. Taking expertise from its founders (Ruben Karapetian of All Star Tire, Raul Becerril of All Star Customs, 310 Motoring, Next Motorsports, & 405 Motorsports, and Andrei Karapetian of LA Connection in Russia), the shop chose the Sprinter as the base model for their build because it provides desirable features that customizers look for, says Raul Becerril, VP and system design engineer of All Star Customs. “It’s a flexible platform that comes in three different sizes, has a turbo diesel engine, has the longest passenger/cargo van made and has high safety ratings,” Karapetian says. Already a favorite among their international customers, All Star Customs intends to make it popular among its American clientele. “Throughout our experiences with our international customers, we’ve taken mental notes and have come to a consensus among our team what the absolute necessities are when building the ultimate Sprinter van,” he explains. What they’ve compiled among top picks include: highquality leather, comfortable seating arrangements, safety, function, Wi-Fi, Apple products, a huge sound system, fridge and bar. “These are features 42 | DUB MAGAZINE 2014

that the Sprinter customer comes to expect, but it was our idea to take it a step further with design and function and we believe that we’ve surpassed what we’ve first envisioned.” First, safety was a huge concern. Karapetian details that when adding larger wheel and tire packages, proper load rating is the first qualifying feature for the products they use. To help accommodate for this, they’ve created their custom body kit with full replacement front and rear bumpers that provide extra room for properly load rated 20” wheels and tires. Style was the next concern for the All Star Customs crew. “Our body kit – which has full replacement side steps – also had to incorporate Mercedes-Benz elements of style and lines in it. So we’ve included the S-Class front LED lights and rear exhaust tips to our kit. And by adding

the Asanti 20 x 9 monoblock forged wheels, the customer rides in style both inside and out.” Finally, the various features/functions of the Sprinter needed to be carefully thought out. “It’s the first thing a customer notices when they step inside of one,” Becerril says. “A huge interior highlight is the touchscreen operating system, which we use to control mostly everything in the vehicle – from the lighting, air conditioning and TV to the sound system, partition and intercom – that allows us to diagnose a problem a customer is having even though their Sprinter is not physically present at the shop. They’ve also incorporated a biometric safe, a huge request from customers who like to “stash” away goods, which is an All Star Customs exclusive. “With the touch of the owner’s fingerprint, he can access his most valuable items.”

Audiophile-caliber sound is one of their Sprinter vans’ highlights, All Star Customs installs nothing but the best. Since the vehicle is most likely going to be used for traveling long distances, the electronics that were chosen were done so with reliability in mind and ones that would work well under the harshest conditions. The heart of the system is a Kenwood DNX570HD Multimedia DVD receiver with navigation and Bluetooth, which is connected to a 5.1 digital sound processor that’s controlled by an Intel Pentium i7 on-board computer. Dynaudio Estoec 362 three-way component system speakers were installed in the front and rear of the Sprinter, which are powered by JL Audio XD400/4 4-channel Class-D full-range amp and JL Audio XD600/1 monoblock subwoofer amp. To provide heavy boom, two 12” JL Audio W6v3-D4 subwoofer drivers were added. “The result is a rich, smooth high-fidelity sound capable of achieving the perfect sound for the end user for when they’re listening to their favorite music or watching movies,” Becerril comments. For even more comfort, the custom Sprinter van features four captain chairs, with each perforated seat using high-quality leathers. They also feature temperature controls and a massage system. “The most comfortable seats are the last two, which we call our ‘first class’ recliner seats,” he says. “When these individual seats layout out into a bed, you lose minimal luggage space.” But the full bar is Becerril’s favorite feature. It hides five refillable liquor bottles inside the side panels and offers a no-spill experience for passengers. As All Star Customs’ perfect demo display vehicle, the Sprinter allows them to fully experience how the end product will sound and look once they place their own order. As the shop’s biggest build to date, they’ve already started looking into future customizations of the next generation Viera Sprinter that will “definitely exceed any previous fabrication” of theirs.

omewhere in the hills of Orange County, CA, Nyjah Huston’s cars are methodically parked on the driveway outside of his newly purchased home. Aside from being able to afford “dope cars,” Huston is heavy into the automotive world. When it comes to performance cars (especially exotics and rally style cars), he knows his sh*t. His attention to detail and desire for perfection are as evident in his skating as they are in his cars. “I like going on canyon runs, especially in the Audi. It’s so fun and it handles the road well,” he says, adding that his skateboarding and driving styles are both “fast but precise.” At 19, Huston is in the position of power - on a skateboard and behind the wheel. With consistent contest wins under his belt, Huston has modestly DUB MAGAZINE 2014 | 49

made his way to the top of the skateboarding totem pole. And with those contest wins, came sponsors. Currently, Monster Energy, DC Shoes, Asphalt Yacht Club and Element Skateboards are in his corner. While still looking up to veteran skaters like P-Rod, and Chris Cole, Huston has already far exceeded their contest winnings (in reference to prize money). Today’s mainstream skateboarding contests allow skaters to earn six figures at a time. “Street Skating has taken over throughout the past few years, especially with contests like Street League starting up. Rob Dyrdek has created the best courses out there,” he says. Huston is arguably the best street skateboarder in the world and one of the most progressive athletes of our time. In 2013, Huston was awarded an ESPY for “Best Male Action Sports Athlete”, and later he launched a series of shoes with DC. As his accolades continue to build, so does his car collection. After getting his drivers license in 2011, he purchased his first car - a Mercedes-Benz CLS 63 AMG. “Ever since I first saw the car, I absolutely loved it. I always wanted it to be my first car.” To make it stand out, Huston enlisted the help of Shoreline Motoring who dressed the white Benz with matte black and red accents. They also added

red side view mirrors and red seatbelts inside. A set of 20” Vossen VVS-CV4 wheels with a custom black finish was fitted with Pirelli P Zero Nero tires, in addition to a suspension-lowering module, custom valve exhaust system, Wald front bumper, carbon fiber rear diffusers and an integrated radar system. They also upgraded the brake calipers. Huston’s CLS 63 AMG was such a head turner that it was ranked #2 on Complex Magazine’s “The 15 Best Celebrity Cars of February 2013”. “After I drove it for a few months, I realized that I didn’t want my friends to get it all dirty so I bought a Chevy Tahoe,” he reveals. This is his “skate homie car” that Huston can drive everyone around in. Murdered-out with an “epic” sound system added, the Tahoe (purchased from Absolut Motor Cars in Orange County, CA) is the vehicle that he doesn’t have to “care about so much.” Huston’s latest car purchase is an Audi R8, which he describes as his “dream car” and “the best looking car in the world.” Even just talking about the fast, badass R8 makes Huston’s face

glow each time he mentions it. “I’m so stoked I was able to get it in stick shift since you can really feel the power and have so much fun with it,” he says with a grin. Since no car is complete without some proper aftermarket upgrades, Huston again employed the help of Shoreline Motoring. They fitted the R8 with 20” Niche Forged Stuttgart wheels and a grippy set of Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires, KW Variant 3 coilovers for improved handling, a carbon lip spoiler and a Tubi Style exhaust system. But he wasn’t finished there. A few weeks after our shoot with him, he had the crew at Elevated Auto Concepts flip the look of the R8 with a custom satin black wrap and carbon fiber hood wrap. “Huston is a total car guy and was very involved in the upgrades in all the rides we worked on for him,” says Paul Roberts, owner of Shoreline Motoring. “We’ve been working Huston’s CLS 63 AMG was his first car and was tastefully modified by the Shoreline Motoring crew. with him for a few years now (since he first got his license). His knowledge of cars is pretty impressive. He’s always excited about the upgrades we talk about and even more excited to come pick up his cars once they’re finished.” But buying cool four-wheeled toys isn’t just what Huston is doing with all his contest winnings. As a family man and role model for kids around the world, Huston is very handson with his fans. Unlike most athletes of his caliber, Huston often practices his sport in public domains, frequenting popular skate parks to skateboard with his fans. He’s also a leader in the skate community, giving back to the youth regularly. He’ll often show up to skate parks unannounced and gift all of the local kids. And as part of his ritual, this last holiday season he gifted Element skateboards to hundreds of skaters at various parks in Southern California. More recently, Huston and his mother Kelle launched a non-profit organization called Let It Flow, which provides clean water solutions to countries around the world. Let It Flow was inspired by the Huston family’s own experiences of living without clean running water and now look to help the unfortunate millions of people that live every day without access to clean water. When he’s not contributing to the greater good of society, Huston occupies his time perfecting his skate skills and his cars. He is a sports car fanatic with a need for speed. As an emerging car collector, Huston buys his cars instead of leasing them as many often do. “It is my dream to one day have a warehouse full of whatever car I want.” Despite his big dreams, Huston still remains humble and unimaginably down to earth. Once his skating career comes to an end, Huston plays around with the idea of transitioning into rally car racing. “Going through different terrains like snow and dirt sounds so fun. Some years down the road I’ll definitely want to start learning how to do that and hopefully transition from skating to rally car racing.” But for now, Huston will continue being the best at street skateboarding as an official team member of Asphalt Yacht Club (AYC) – a club founded by pro-skaters and good friends of Huston’s, Stefan Janoski and Stevie Williams. Together, they’ve created an A-list skate collective and launched a clothing line. “I am so excited this is the first time I’ve been apart of something new like (this) Asphalt Yacht Club.”

rench Montana knows that the finer things in life come on four wheels. His garage is proof that luxury reigns supreme and is a testament of the rapperâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s hustle throughout the years. Flossing in luxury is a norm for the Moroccan-born, New York raised lyricist (born Karim Kharbouch) who often posts pictures of private jets, envious rides and even his pet animal menagerie on his Instagram feed (he has a pet monkey named Julius Ceasor and two baby tigers). Sitting pretty in his garage are: 2012 Rolls-Royce Ghost, 2013 Maserati GranTurismo, 2014 Rolls-Royce Wraith, 2014 Range Rover, 2013 Ferrari California and 2013 Audi A8L.

“I grew up loving that flashy life,” he reveals. “Just basically always loved fine European cars. I guess I followed in my father’s footsteps of appreciating luxury machines.” Even his first ride screamed luxury. Where most 16 year olds get family hand-me-down vehicles, French’s first vehicle was a Range Rover HSE. “I was hustling hard and grabbed $20,000 in cash and went to a crooked dealership and bought a black Range. I didn’t even have my license. I was stupid and drove it like that for awhile.” It’s that hustler mentality that helped the (then aspiring rapper) come up with his series of street-flavored DVD mixtapes called French’s 2013 Ferrari California rolled off the production line as a beauty and French wanted to keep it that way.

“Cocaine City,” which featured his own tracks and interviews with major artists and fellow up-andcomers. The series ran for eight years (from 20022010), which later became a top-selling “street DVD” and exposed French to various record labels before he signed to Bad Boy Records in 2011. Then, his first major purchase after signing a joint venture deal with P. Diddy’s Bad Boy Records and Rick Ross’ Maybach Music Group (this was finalized in 2012, with both Diddy and Rick Ross executive producers on his debut album) was his white Rolls-Royce Ghost in 2011. “That ride was my baby,” he details, also mentioning that it was used in his “Coke Boys 3 Intro” video. “Right now, it’s my favorite car. Even though it’s a luxury car it drives like a regular car. Like, with Lambos and Bugattis, you got to be on 60 | DUB MAGAZINE 2014

the right road for those types of rides, especially in New York where there are a lot of potholes around the city. My Ghost drives great on them and I take it everywhere.” Completely satisfied with his current collection, French admits his next big purchase just might be the Bugatti he’s had his eye on. “It’s the most expensive glorified car ever,” he says. “Of course I’d want one. It’s luxury at its finest. You get one when you’ve made it; it’s a statement car.” Enjoying his rides stock (he says he likes to keep them “classy”), French will upgrade a car’s sound system since it’s where he usually likes to test out new music. It’s where he made sure every track on his 2013 debut album, Excuse My French, sounded perfect and will test out new singles for his sophomore effort, Mac & Cheese 4, which is due out later this year. And as the head of his record label, Coke Boys, his in-car studio sessions will come in handy when listening to tunes from his fellow Coke Boy members: Chinx Drugz, Flip, Cheeze and Lil Durk. And if he’s in the mood for a bit of personalization, he’ll hit up his boys at Platinum 62 | DUB MAGAZINE 2014

It’s dressed in a full Hofele Tuning SR8 Edition body kit and sits on 22” Agetro F10 3-piece wheels wrapped in 295/25R22 Falken tires. They also added a ride-height adjustable air suspension, all-black powder coated body moldings and trim and ECU power tuning. “I love everything they do,” he says. “George Keyshishian and the whole Platinum Motorsport Crew obviously have the best cars around and everybody in the industry copies them. If you want fly rides, you know you have to take it to Platinum so they can transform it into something even better to floss.”

he 2013 SEMA Show saw some of the best customs that have hit the aftermarket automotive scene in years! Held in Las Vegas, Nevada at the Las Vegas Convention Center, SEMA is the most anticipated aftermarket expo in the world for tuners, customizers and manufacturers, with this year’s event showcasing extreme customs from every car genre – from exotics to American muscle, off-roading Jeeps and lifted trucks – this automotive menagerie featured a little something for everyone. Attendance numbers saw a huge increase for both visitors and exhibitors from past years, with a captivating buzz around Sin City during SEMA Show Week that went from November 5-8. The DUB Show Tour made Sin City its last stop for 2013 with the DUB LIVE! exhibit at SEMA Show. The massive, outdoor area in front of the convention center’s South Hall saw non-stop traffic, as everyone wanted to check out what kind of rides we were flossing. We had it all – from custom cars, trucks, SUVs, exotics, Lowriders, bikes and more – the DUB LIVE! area was home to all sorts of interactive booths, too. The centerpiece of DUB LIVE! was the Harley-Davidson display with their Rebel One custom truck in the middle surrounded by hogs that attendees could sit on and feel what it’s like to be on a Harley-Davidson bike. As always, we had plenty of hard hitting custom rides from Platinum Motorsport on display, including their carbon-fiber dressed Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Roadster, Nicky Diamond’s Starke Kollectiv Range Rover, Hamann Range Rover Mystere and Aventador. Forgiato’s custom widebody 2014 Chevy Corvette Stingray built by Widebody King Topo and his TS Designs team was one of the vehicles at DUB LIVE! getting massive attention. Its teal color scheme, lowered stance and Oakland Booty rear end stood out among all the eye candy at our exhibit. We shouldn’t fail to mention Liberty Walk’s sexy Ferrari 458 Italia and Japanese supercar Nissan GT-R while we’re talking about widebody customs. Just like the widebody Corvette Stingray at DUB LIVE!, people just couldn’t stop falling into a trance upon seeing the Ferrari 458 in Nitto Tire’s booth and at the Nissan GT-R in the Toyo Tires display. Off-road inspired rigs had a strong presence at last year’s expo with the Jeep Wrangler JK, the refreshed 2014 Toyota Tundra and the redesigned 2014 Chevy/GM full-size trucks as popular vehicles to lift, modify and make ready for blazing through rugged terrain. Their popularity even inspired Toyo Tires to hang BJ Baldwin’s trophy truck above their booth to make it look like it was jumping over the Liberty Walk Nissan GT-R.

he 2014 DUB Show Tour kicked off inside the North American International Auto Show from January 18-26. A show within a show, even the chilly weather outside couldn’t keep fans from checking out the latest and greatest rides that DUB had to offer as our showcase saw non-stop traffic during the show! Luxury rides were in full effect inside Rucci Wheels’ booth, who displayed a Rolls-Royce Phantom, Maybach and Bentley along with their new wheel display. Tommy Z Designs brought out their custom Chevy Camaro and sky-high GMC

Sierra 2500 sporting TIS 535 Wheels, while Victory Racing displayed an old-school convertible Chevy Camaro SS that dropped jaws. Icon Auto Center represented with a Fisker, old school classic and 2014 Jeep SRT8 that awed the crowd. A.R.E. Accessories represented with their Chevy Silverado “Wounded Warrior Project” truck that was featured in the premiere issue of LFTD&LVLD and provided insightful info on the organization and its mission to help our country’s veterans. Harley-Davidson’s H-D Jumpstart was a crowd favorite, and our DUB Developed by Meguiar’s display got great feedback from showgoers (they loved the smell)! t the beginning of every new year, motor heads get to enjoy all the latest and greatest the automotive industry has to offer with the numerous automotive shows. America has NAIAS (aka the Detroit Auto Show), SEMA and both the Los Angeles and New York Auto Shows where the newest concepts and models debut to the public. And then there’s the Tokyo Auto Salon in Japan that also enjoys its fair share of public debuts along with highlights of what’s trending in tuning culture. Sadly, many of what’s showcased at the Makuhari Messe Convention Center never make it to American shores, but at least we have pictures! Crowded with auto enthusiasts and journalists from around the world, the 32nd annual Tokyo Auto Salon saw custom beauties from world renowned tuners like Liberty Walk, 86/BRZ and more, with this year seeing a lot of widebody styling kits that were made popular by Kei Miura of TRA Kyoto. But as the world’s third largest tuning and customizing show behind SEMA and Germany’s Essen Motorshow, the Tokyo Auto Salon also features various wheel companies showing off their latest offerings. Leading wheel companies like Work Wheels, Rays Engineering/Volk Racing and BBS, in addition to Forgiato and Lexani from the U.S. displayed their latest wheel styles and technologies.

he second leg of the 2014 DUB Show Tour landed in Philadelphia, PA from February 8-16 inside of the Philadelphia Auto Show. The Pennsylvania Convention Center was the place to keep warm from the cold temps outside since it was jam-packed with the hottest customs around! The show saw massive crowds from the day we opened until the final minutes on closing day, which shows how much Philly loves DUB! The Monster Energy Girls might have been the booth’s eye-candy, but it was the delicious DUB Edition Monster Energy drinks that had everyone talking. TIS and Dropstars also showcased their newest styles in Monster’s booth. Pioneer and Sound of Tri-State both had busy displays that featured new products, while Imagine Audio packed their booth with a few rides from Mike Peterson from the NY Giants. Car Effex brought out a nice lineup of rides from Eagles players (like Trent Cole’s lifted Chevy Silverado) and even brought out Mike Vick to say hi. Philly’s own Killer Kreations was in the house showcasing new projects that were dressed up in custom paint jobs. Tricked Out Cycles filled their booth with custom bikes and old schools. D’Antonio Automotive brought the heat with their fleet of rides that ranged from classic rides like their 1969 Dodge Charger R/T and 1969 Chevy Camaro SS to extoic supercars like their 2009 Ferrari F430 Scuderia and SRT Viper. Designer Wraps showed off their camo-wrapped Audi R8 along with hot eye-catching vehicles, while Kelly Motor Cars displayed lots of exotics. n the summer of 2004, a few days after Shaq’s shocking trade from the Los Angeles Lakers to the Miami Heat, we had the chance to catch up with the former NBA superstar to talk about and photograph his latest rides at the time – a 2004 Rolls-Royce Phantom and full-blown custom 2003 Hummer H2. Despite the trade, he arrived to the shoot wearing his trademark smile and larger than life fun loving persona and still rocking a Los Angeles jersey with pride. Shaq’s 2004 Phantom featured custombuilt 24” Superman Wheels from Blingz Beverly Hills, with the $39K set of wheels wrapped in

305/35R24 BFGoodrich KDW tires. Already a sight of beauty, the Phantom didn’t need much else. But the H2 saw numerous transformations before it was just right. Dressed in his trademark Dark Maroon custom paint, it features a Strut Grille that gives it an aggressive yet classy look, finely tuned suspension that lowered the H2 5” for a sportier stance and a fully custom exhaust for the performance and head-turning roar. Minor accents that add to the overall custom look include: billet door handles with both the Superman logo and #34 laser-etched into it and fully one-off Superman fuel doors by Pro-Fit. For the wheel set up, Shaq requested a set of 26” Asanti AF127 chrome wheels with custom-engraved Superman “S” logos on each of the five spokes, with the wheels wrapped in 305/20R26 Kumho tires. Inside, Shaq wanted a custom signature #34 basketball shift knob and an upgraded sound system that “banged”. But the real highlight was the built-in Microsoft touchscreen on-board computer with integrated wireless mouse mounted on the center console - truly the definition of a Big Baller!

aute couture designer Yves Saint Laurent once said, “Fashions fade, but style is eternal.” It’s a quote that fashionistas live by, but it can easily be applied to the car customization industry that sees as many trends as the catwalks. With new fads introduced each year, it’s easy to get caught up with the latest and greatest trend. But one look at Liberty Walk’s Ferrari 458 Italia or Nissan R35 GT-R and you know that their aggressively lowered ride heights and wider body lines are more than a trend; it’s a statement of legacy in the customization history books. Liberty Walk is synonymous with today’s JDM scene (otherwise known as the Japanese Domestic Market) and is quickly becoming a household name in the States thanks to their awe-inspiring, drool-worthy, menacing 458 Italia and GT-R that were the talk of the 2013 SEMA Show. The tuning house actually began with humble beginnings, churning out custom Suzukis, Dodge Chargers, Chrysler 300Cs and Nissan Skylines, but has since evolved their tastes to include more exotic vehicles, placing their widebody expertise on the Lamborghini and BMW M3 platforms. The story behind Liberty Walk began when Kato, the company’s founder, encountered his first modified car that was owned by a friend in a car club back in 1983. Highly impressed by the lowered ride, Kato was inspired to build his own ride, a Nissan Skyline. With little money to spend on parts, Kato and 10 of his closest friends made it a routine to work on the Skyline every night until it was finished. After he received his first offer for his bespoke Skyline, Kato knew he wanted to make it his profession. Then back in April 2005, Kato and his partner bought their first shop space that had just enough room to allow them to work on three cars at a time. “We didn’t have much funds at the beginning, but we started by modifying BMW DUB MAGAZINE 2014 | 113

3-Series models for about $1,500-$3,000,” Kato explains via email. “The name ‘Liberty Walk’ stems from one of my pet peeves. I’ve always been a guy who acts on his beliefs. I wanted to associate the brand’s name with this belief; to create my own way that would liberate me from any oppressions.” Paving his own path within the JDM world, Liberty Walk grew to become one of Japan’s most notable tuning houses. Under their LB Performance brand name, their custom body kits are a favorite among enthusiasts worldwide. Having already created awe-inspiring kits for

Lamborghini, it was a natural progression for him to set his eyes on a Ferrari. “I always choose a car according to what I’m passionate about when creating aerodynamic parts,” he says. “That way, I can confidently describe them as the fruit of my work and passion.” The GT-R pays homage to Kato’s Japanese heritage and his early customization beginnings when he first worked on Skylines. For every vehicle he touches, Kato relies on his imagination along with instinct, visualizing how each finished product will look. “I always try to create parts that accentuate and respect the beauty I find in something that I like,” he says. For the 458, I tried to find balance between my work and the smooth curves of the Ferrari’s base design. Recently, it seems that the focus of

customization has really shifted from respecting the authenticity of each model to seeking more radical aesthetic changes, but I still like to respect the original body when modifying a vehicle. As for the GT-R, my main goal was to reemphasize the power of the vehicle through its exterior styling.” Both kits include rear quarter flares, front fenders, rear bumper with diffuser, rear spoiler, with the option to add a front lip and SRV side skirts (as seen in the pictures). The design of both kits is fairly similar with the major difference being the spoilers; The Ferrari flaunts a duckbill tail spoiler perched on top of its engine cover, while the GT-R’s JGTC-style (Japanese Grand Touring Championship) spoiler is a bit more aggressive and sportier.

With both cars set to debut at SEMA, Kato enlisted the help of Long Tran of LTMW in El Monte, CA to turn his automotive dreams into a reality. Kato’s own Nissan R35 GT-R was flown in from Japan specifically for the build, while a stock U.S.-spec Ferrari 458 Italia was purchased locally and delivered to LTMW just a couple of weeks before the show. LTMW first became an official LB Performance distributor after Tran saw a rendering of their custom widebody BMW M3 online. After a few conversations with Kato, Tran was given the opportunity to install their M3 kit on Kato’s 2008 BMW M3 a mere two weeks before MFest (an annual gathering of BMW enthusiasts). With Kato a satisfied customer, LTMW was now Liberty Walk’s go-to shop in the U.S. “Their [kits] are very interesting and they’re not for everyone,” Tran comments. “The quality on all their kits are top-notch and I’ve never worked on aftermarket kits that fit so well.” According to Tran, after working on the M3, the Ferrari and Nissan GT-R were a breeze, despite the limited time constraints. “I was convinced that [LTMW] was the right match because of [Tran’s] passion for cars, quick turnaround and, most of all, responsibility when working with [high-end] vehicles,” Kato describes. To provide the vehicles’ ferocious looks, LTMW had to carefully cut away the fenders and quarter panels – something that not everyone is comfortable about doing. Although an automotive purists’ nightmare, Tran and the team at LTMW weren’t afraid to cut up the $100K-plus rides, but made sure all the panels were lined up, lines were drawn and clearances were checked before any tools touched the cars. To drop the Ferrari, Liberty Walk springs were fitted to the factory suspension, while a set of custom-built 20x9 front and 20x12 rear Rotiform LVS wheels were wrapped in Nitto INVO 245/30R20 front and 295/30R20 rear tires to fill the arches. To improve braking power, massive 16-pot CSD calipers were fitted to the Italia. An Armytirx titanium and stainless catback valvetronic exhaust system was mated to iPE rear muffler tips to provide visual, aural and performance improvements. 118 | DUB MAGAZINE 2014

The Nissan GT-R was slammed to the ground using a CSD adjustable suspension, while a set of 20x11 front and 20x12 rear Forgiato Maglia wheels surrounded by a grippy set of competition Toyo Proxes R888s in 285/35R20 up front and 315/20R20 on the rears. The Ferrari 458 Italia was showcased in Nitto’s booth, while the GT-R debuted in Toyo’s at the 2013 SEMA Show with both rides garnering huge attention from the press and attendees from all over the world. Both booths saw massive

worth continuing trying to break the U.S. market since it was costing me so much money [laughs].” Obviously, Kato’s patience and persistence has paid off as American audiences are finally taking notice of his work and ability to take even already perfect rides to new heights. Although, impressed with American car culture, Kato doesn’t have plans to bring his Liberty Walk tuning house to the States. “I’d rather remain on my home ground in Japan,” he says. “There are already lots of great

crowds each day at the show, as show-goers couldn’t get enough of the transformed rides. “Everyone loved the finished products,” Tran says. “We had a lot of compliments on a job well done.” But this wasn’t Kato’s first SEMA rodeo, whose first time was six years ago when he was barely introducing himself to the American market. “I remember my first time there as if it were yesterday. I showcased a green Lamborghini with a custom air suspension that slammed it to the ground. DUB Magazine was kind enough to exhibit my car in their booth. Even though it was well received, I didn’t receive any U.S. orders for quite a few years after that. I wasn’t sure if it was

customizers in the U.S. My main goal is to keep introducing and spreading the art of Japanese car customization. Keeping that in mind, I don’t necessarily wish to take my shop there if it means I have to be all about the business. I want to enjoy working on cars and that’s what I’m currently doing. That’s the bottom line for me.” With new body kits always in mind, Kato wouldn’t reveal what his next three custom cars will be, but did mention that he’ll release them later this year. “Be on the lookout for something from us maybe in August,” he confesses. “But... no matter what we release, we will always put our 100% into it!”

ustomizing usually starts off with a vision and builds from there, but that wasn’t the case for Benjamin Pulido (aka Benji) and his 2014 Toyota Tundra. As an avid Tundra fan, he knew he wanted it lifted as soon as he picked up the newly redesigned model. What had started out as a simple project soon turned into a complete build six weeks before the 2013 SEMA Show – where it was showcased as one of the first custom and lifted 2014 Toyota Tundras in the world. But Benji is no stranger to customizing, having previously owned a show-ready 2008 Tundra that sat on 28” wheels, was covered in silver leafing and flaunted an exotic interior. However, for his new Tundra, he was looking for a more “practical” truck – something that he’d be able to cruise in on the weekends or take off-roading. 124 | DUB MAGAZINE 2014

“I picked it up on a Wednesday and the following day it was in the shop for its suspension work,” he explains. “I knew I wanted it lifted, but it came out higher than expected. Then after posting pictures on Instagram, I started to receive offers from [aftermarket] companies, asking if I wanted to use their products on the truck. The build was certainly bigger than I ever expected.” Originally opting for a 6” lift, Benji doubled-up going with a 12” Bulletproof suspension lift, along with Bulletproof coilovers and shocks, to provide the Tundra with a more “aggressive stance.” “It’s high, and it looks mean,” he describes. Benji paired the lift with a fresh set of 22” X 12” TIS Monster Energy Edition 535 wheels and fitted it with an aggressive set of 37x13.50R22 Nitto Mud Grapplers. Bushwacker Pocket Style fender flares set it apart from other 2014 Tundras on the road, while a Rigid Industries prototype grille was sent over to be used on the Tundra for the first time. “Since the 2014 Tundra was so new, not a lot of aftermarket parts were available for the truck,” Benji says. “A lot of the stuff that was sent to me for the build had to be customized to fit the truck since it wasn’t primarily built for the 2014 model.” Rigid Industries also sent over two 50” LED bars to completely light paths for nighttime trail runs. An A.R.E Accessories LS II Tonneau cover allows Benji to carry equipment in the back without worrying about it being stolen, while AMP Research steps help him and his family get in and out of the sky-high Tundra. A Gravel Empire roof rack and custom-painted headlights round out the exterior modifications. DUB MAGAZINE 2014 | 125

More than happy with the outcome on the exterior, it’s the inside that really impressed Benji. “The Ultrasuede interior is my favorite customization,” he reveals. “When I bought the Tundra, it had a stock interior – nothing fancy but now it really pops with the all-black upgrade that was done by by Alea Leather and installed by California Upholstery.” For better performance on-and off-road, a K&N cold air intake, Bullydog performance tuner, Dough Thorley short tube headers and Metal Mulisha exhaust system by Gibson Performance Exhaust all add usable power to the 5.7L V8’s capabilities. 126 | DUB MAGAZINE 2014

Besides its grand debut at the 2013 SEMA Show where it turned heads and had show-goers talking, the Tundra made its rounds at the LA Auto Show and has been showcased at a couple of the Monster Energy Supercross events. Aside from the shows, Benji has also had the chance to take it off the pavement to the recent King of the Hammers in Johnson Valley, Glamis and Burro Canyon. “I’ve taken it out several times and it handles better on the dirt than on pavement,” he confesses. ”It’s a beast and I’m glad I ended up going all out on this build. It was all worth it in the end!”

club’s current president (he’s been a member for the past three years). “It was founded by guys who were in different car clubs who came together to create one better club.” Back in 2009, the club first started out with six members from Orange County, CA and has grown to more than 350 members worldwide. With chapters in California, Arizona, Texas, New Mexico, Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina, West Virginia, New York, Illinois, Tennessee, Oklahoma, Wisconsin, Michigan and Missouri, Resendiz and his head council (made up of members from the regional So. Silva, handles the club’s Midwest and East Coast chapters with their everyday needs like recruits, local car shows and more. And since he owns his own shop, Silva also consults with members regarding any upgrades. Because of the club’s success in the States and its growth on social media, Xplizit was able to reach past American shores to have chapters in Japan, Mexico and Brazil, with more countries gaining interest every year. “People follow us on Facebook, YouTube, Twitter and Instagram and see the type of cars we rep and want to be a part of our culture. They contact us to see how they can expand the club. Japan was our first non-USA chapter and it’s run by Ryuichi Tamura.” Potential members either inquire about membership or a recruiter member from one of

the chapters may approach the potential member and extend an invitation to sit in on a meeting. If the potential member “meshes” well with the rest of the club, that person is then offered membership if they can meet all requirements, such as attending meetings, paying club dues, and making all mandatory events like car shows and photo shoots. “We also have a list of rules for members and council members to follow,” Resendiz explains. “These rules are written for the best interest of the club. The rules vary from the way we act in public, to how we dress at events and even how

we’re supposed to interact with other clubs and car enthusiasts. And, of course, there are rules on how we should take care of our show rides.” And all rides are welcomed into the club, just as long as they all have their own unique twist. “It doesn’t matter what type of vehicle or year the car is,” he says. “We just want them to be cool and different from all the rest. The club was founded because the original members wanted to be different from other clubs and this is something we always try to do with our rides.” But the cars aren’t the only aspect to Xplizit’s notoriety; it’s their family atmosphere that really impresses new members. “Xplizit was founded on the basis of family, something the

original members didn’t think other clubs had. We all support each other and our club is based on respect and most of all loyalty.” As Xplizit grows its membership and chapters overseas, the club has also upped their car game, landing numerous magazine covers, music video cameos for their rides and more. “We even have our own Xplizit songs and music videos,” Resendiz adds. “We see only more expansion in our future as our club grows to be the biggest in the scene!” 146 | DUB MAGAZINE 2014
