he Jeep JL was a highly anticipated vehicle and 2018 finally saw its release. The JL improves on the JK in a number of ways and manufacturers have made sure to come out with new and improved aftermarket parts for this updated iteration of the most popular 4x4 on the market. This issue is devoted to the Jeep JL with a special buyer’s guide. We’ve also got a few amazing Jeep JK builds for you to feast your eyes on! Blake Boatwright’s wife Victoria knew she needed her own Jeep after she saw his completed BIGLRG JK in the previous issue. She set out to make an equally special Wrangler she’d be able to floss on her own and created SYREN with Blake’s help of course. Roman Racela knows a thing or two about how to customize a Wrangler after being in the

industry for decades. His Silver Panda Jeep may look like a show-ready vehicle, but it’s a more than capable off-road Jeep that he has taken out on various photo safari adventures. Janessa and Calvin Chapleau are known for their eye-catching builds and this time, Janessa took the reigns on her own Jeep build, coming up with #saTISfied. What started out as a standard JK quickly turned into a SEMA-worthy build after being offered a spot at the biggest automotive aftermarket show in the world. Scott Kangas of Cambered Customs took a workhorse farm Jeep that he found for sale and transformed it into a showstopping custom rig, giving it the Cinderella treatment! It not only looks ready to perform, but does so since his main objective was to supercharge it and breathe new life into the 2007 JK.

Aside from those Jeeps, we have a trio of trucks that are pretty badass, too! Chase O’Krinsky of Premier Offroad & Performance in Katy, TX, knows too well the work, time and commitment needed to build the “best ride” around. He created his dream in Premier 2.0 to be bigger and badder than other customs he’s seen. Chris Pate of Level 7 truck club is showcasing two massive Duallies that were inspired by his son! Taking on comic book character themes, he created some superhero rigs that showed his own vision of transforming regular trucks into massive and moving works of art! The past 6 or 7 months flew. Building a true SEMA truck, was no small task. It has been a goal of mine for years to attend SEMA, and showcase the quality and creativity I could bring to the industry. It was more difficult than I intended. Almost every weekend, weeknight, and holiday I’ve spent on this build since April. Now here we are in Vegas with a project I feel, although never finished, is holding its own with top builders in the country for its class. Having a vehicle in SEMA with the amount of positivity we’ve received is something only a small amount of people can say they’ve done. I’m living proof if you set your mind to something you can achieve and exceed it. This truck was built in my three bay 1600sq ft shop around our hectic business. SUPER SWAMPER TSL BOGGERS

ew tires come out all the time, but there’s something special about the new Interco Super Swamper TSL Boggers. They took notice of a trend in the industry where Boggers are being used by truck builders for both “trailer queens” and “show truck” drivers. With this in mind, Interco decided to add to this growing movement by developing fitments specifically for today’s larger wheels and taller lifts. For those not familiar with these types of tires, they were originally developed for the professional Mud Bogger and these tires can easily be modified and custom grooved for cut, open, and pro stock classes. Although the Bogger was developed primarily for off-road use, they are amazingly well-mannered on the pavement and are a D.O.T.-approved and street-legal tire. Their aggressive styling features a directional tread pattern with the patented TSL (three-stage lug) design coupled with their ability to be used safely and comfortably on the street, as well as offroad have made them a fan favorite among the custom-truck building crowd. 40

hat happens when you take an 18-year-old kid and put him in control of his own destiny? You get Scott Kangas of Fort Smith, Arkansas. At 18, he joined the Army National Guard right out of high school. Although he was never deployed, he spent three years in Fort Jackson, South Carolina, and Fort Chaffee, Arkansas. With automotive customization in his blood, he continued to build trucks while serving, and started selling lifestyle apparel and audio accessories to supplement his income. From there, Scott started building trucks in his garage, which led to opening his first shop Cambered Customs in Fort Smith, Arkansas. The market evolved over the years from lowered trucks to lifted trucks and off-road vehicles, and Scott and Cambered Customs adjusted accordingly.

Scott’s friend Kevin informed him about a farm Jeep for sale on a nearby ranch in Arkansas. Scott made the trip at the request of his wife Ashley (who has always had a thing for Jeeps) and the rest was history. “It was in pretty bad shape when I bought it,” Scott describes. “It was drivable, but was pretty ugly to look at.” The first step was improving the motor, and with only 77,000 miles it was still fresh and had plenty of life left. So the Cambered team supercharged the 3.8L V6.

The next step was adding the Fab Fours products as the team cut the fenders to fit the rock rails. Once the body armor and panels were fitted, they prepped for paint. Scott called his friend Brian White and Jason Wilson from White’s Towing and Collision to handle the Kandy Lime Green Metallic exterior. The undercarriage was painted gloss black to accentuate the green even more. From there, the suspension was upgraded using a long arm suspension kit from Skyjacker, which features Fox coilovers. The control arms were painted green and the rest of the suspension was coated in black to match the frame. The stock axles were tossed and Teraflex full-float Super 60s were installed, which was accented with some green on the logos.

Inside the Wrangler, Scott went for the wow factor by trying to remain subtle and clean, but going over the top at the same time. He chose Alea Leather to make a statement utilizing black Nappa grain leather with carbon fiber bolsters and lime green stitching. The Cambered Customs logo was embossed on the seat headrests. The last step was adding grommets in the seat backs with seat heaters for those cold days in Arkansas. Sound dampener was added to the floor and then topped with BedTred from BedRug. The center strips on the dashboard were painted green to break up the otherwise solid black interior. A Lock’er Down Security console safe was added for security when parked. Scott wishes to thank his beautiful wife Ashley for insisting that he purchase the Jeep and supporting him during the process. A special thanks go to their two daughters Nevaeh and Zoey for providing him with the motivation to never give up and make them proud with every step. hen you’re the wife of a car customizer, sometimes you take a back seat to long hours wrenching on rigs, the dreaded SEMA crunch and all the weekend shows your spouse attends for marketing. But the perks are well worth it! Instead of getting flowers, jewelry or fancy dinners, you’re shown love and admiration with your very own dedicated build! After Blake Boatwright’s wife Victoria saw his BIGLRG build, she knew he had to build her a special SEMA rig she’d be able to floss on the regular. “Once we decided to build another Jeep, we went through all her ideas and chose what we thought would stand out,” Blake explains. “From the tear down to the intricate small details, she was hands-on the entire build. She wanted to put together a better Jeep than I did, and I must say that all the ideas she gave turned it into an amazing build!” As soon the decision for the build was made, the two got to work planning the look and modifications. To commemorate the Jeep build, they decided on the name SYREN, which was a perfect description given how the Jeep draws you in for its beauty and captivates you to get up close to see all the small details. Blake linked up with ECD Customs for something that popped, while his good friend Josh at Precision Powder Coating set off the suspension with Disco Teal. Like his previous build, Blake ran into some challenges with the powder coating color, but Josh made

SHE WANTED TO PUT TOGETHER A BETTER JEEP THAN I DID, AND I MUST SAY THAT ALL THE IDEAS SHE GAVE TURNED IT INTO AN AMAZING BUILD!” sure to get it the exact shade Blake envisioned. “My goal for the SYREN was to make it unlike anything in the Jeep game right now,” Victoria asserts. “I would always tease Blake that I was going to build a better Jeep than he did. One of my main requests was for the colors to stand out and be unique. I wanted them to be something you didn’t see on every Jeep. It took days to find exactly what we had envisioned but it was totally worth it. I couldn’t be happier with how it turned out.” SYREN sits on a BDS 6.5” suspension that provided the ride quality needed to be a daily driver for Victoria. The suspension allowed them to run TIS Forged 26x16 wheels wrapped

in 42x15.50R26 Fury Offroad Tires. “With these huge tires, I wanted to make sure she would have good stopping power, so our friends at Wilwood set us up with a full big brake kit. Even though the axles are sparkling from all the flake in the powder, they are housing the best in the industry – Yukon gears and axles!” Dallas Car Wraps wrapped the Jeep with the ECD Customs design that was printed on Avery vinyl, while HID Projectors made sure that they had a set of their best headlights to light the way. VPR 4x4 bumpers house some RIGID Industries lights, with a rugged VPR Razer rack accentuating SYREN’s unique styling. Open the Jeep’s doors and see a Roadwire leather 59

interior complementing the exterior. But, one of Victoria’s favorite features is the locker down safe in the console where she can secure valuables when she’s out and about. “From the wheels to the Monster Hooks, no detail was overlooked on this build,” Blake exclaims. While Blake loved how his BIGLRG turned out, it’s SYREN that’s his masterpiece thus far. He’s even received feedback from others admitting that it’s a step up from his rig. “Everyone has been very supportive of this build. From all the positive comments to the groups of people filming and taking pictures at SEMA, everyone seems to love it. The attention it’s been getting is unreal.” “I love getting to see people’s reactions when a little, 5-foot girl steps out of this monster,” Victoria admits. “They are completely shocked!” The sentimental value of his BIGLRG build will never be forgotten, but the overall look of this one takes the win in his book! For Blake, SYREN isn’t just special because it’s for the love of his life, but also because he actually built this one. “Between countless hours with my step-dad getting the suspension perfect to having my good buddy Luis make sure all the lights were hooked up and done right, I’ve put in hundreds of hours in this. But it was all worth it when I saw how happy it made Victoria when it was done. I’m proud of how much time she also has in the build and how involved she was.”

hat happens when a daily driven Jeep gets a bit more detail than anticipated? It becomes a show-stopping custom, of course! That’s exactly what happened for Janessa and Calvin Chapleau. Known for some of the hottest builds in the Jeep and truck scene, Calvin knows how infectious project vehicles are, but his wife got a taste of his customizing dilemma when she just couldn’t stop adding more and more details to her Wrangler. #saTISified was never supposed to come to fruition, but she’s now glad everything worked out the way it was supposed to.

“Our plan was to take a year off from our builds until we heard there was a spot waiting for us at SEMA in the TIS Wheels booth,” Janessa explains. Not one to give up such a coveted opportunity, the Chapleaus set out to create something truly unique. Opting for a purple color scheme (their two daughter’s favorite color), they wanted to pay homage to the wheel company that supported them throughout the past few years, adding “TIS” into the build’s moniker. Once it was decided to show it off at SEMA, they began their initial design process on their living room couch while sipping coffee. “We made a list of everything we wanted to see on the Jeep. We then sent all our ideas to Chase Carroll at Innov8 Design Lab,” she describes. “He then sent back the perfect rendering, which really got us excited about the build. It was exactly as we had imagined!” With only a few months to the big debut, the Chapleaus went right to work to get everything finished on time. Opting for products from companies they worked with in the past, the couple made sure to stay loyal to their sponsors of previous builds. “Let’s just say our friends make some pretty wicked products – so why wouldn’t we want to run them?!”

The 28x16 TIS Forged wheels wrapped inside 40x15.50R28 Tri Ace Tires puts a smile on Janessa’s face every time she looks at them, while the “wicked” Boost Bars Grille that their Canadian friends, Becca and Reid, designed for them was pure love the moment she saw it. Making the build “lit” is lighting from BAMF Led Offroad Lighting, while her train horn set up from Horn Blasters makes the Jeep “loud as hell.” “I love seeing everyone doing some kind of dance when we hit the button,” she admits. “The louder, the better!” According to Janessa, the ride quality of the Skyjacker long-arm suspension rides like a dream. The final highlight for her is the 12 Volt Villains custom license plate covers that slide up and down over her real license plate, stamped with #saTISfied on top.

“The public loved it,” she exclaims over the final product that debuted at the 2018 SEMA show. “The way it sat and the color combo are perfect. The lavender accents really make it and it’s the exact purple I wanted. “Mael Lauzon from Kap Collision in Kapuskasing, Ontario, Canada, worked his magic on getting all of the pieces to match. He sure knows how to lay some serious paint.” So much for this jeep being her year-round vehicle since her new “baby” sits in the garage while her and Calvin sit and admire it. “She’s just waiting for nicer weather or until the next show.” Now the couple has two show vehicles, so their two girls don’t have to argue over the front seat anymore. “It would never measure up to my husband’s build from last year [RYDinOldSkool],” she admits. “But this is my first build and I love it - I’m completely saTISfied!” A HUGE THANKS to Stephanie Desbiens, Nic Desbiens, Josh Walton, Riley Smith, Mike Vachon and the main man Alain Murray of OK Tire in Kapuskasing, Ontario, Canada, for all the long hours and sleepless nights you put into my Jeep to make it come to life! oman Racela is a veteran in the aftermarket industry having worked for a couple of major tire manufacturers as, well as on LFTD & LVLD’s staff for several years. He knows a thing or two (or more) about what makes a vehicle stand out. “I wanted to build a Jeep that catches people’s attention both on and off the road,” he explains. “It’s the best of both worlds. My Jeep can hold its own at a show when it’s cleaned and detailed. It’s actually been a feature vehicle twice at the SEMA Show, a resident showroom Jeep for a month at 4 Wheel Parts in Redondo Beach and a booth vehicle at several local shows in Southern California.” But it wasn’t enough for it just to be a show queen as he needed the Jeep to be able to get him to remote vantage points all over the Southwest. “It needed to tackle anything nature throws at it

since I’m a zealous landscape photographer that spends a lot of time outdoors with my camera.” Thus, Silver Panda was born, named after its silver and black color scheme that came about in 2016. According to Roman, no one was really using the textured vinyl back then and he loved it so much that he decided to keep it once the build was finally completed. Although he’s a huge fan of the iconic Toyota 4Runner, he went with a Jeep Wrangler after his previous 4Runner had to be retired after putting more than 400K miles on it. “The Jeep Wrangler fits the bill and is probably the King of the Hill when it comes to American off-road culture. Additionally, the aftermarket support for the Jeep Wrangler platform is unmatched by any in the lifted light truck/SUV category. The Wrangler can be modded in more than 1 million different ways,” he details.

He found a 2014 Jeep Rubicon with less than 8K miles on it and thought the price was right and decided to take it home. The original idea was to just put a 4” suspension lift, change the front and rear bumpers, add a winch and keep the stock wheels but add some 35” tall tires. But that mentality didn’t last long and he got bit by the modifying bug after stalking online Jeep forums. “I’d spend hours on the different forums and kept finding cool things to do to the Jeep. That’s when I discovered that Jeep really stands for ‘Just Empty Every Pocket’. The idea to just build a functional rig to take me to scenic locations for photography morphed into building one that looked badass on the trails and in the

showroom. I think I accomplished that with the Silver Panda JK.” Roman had three guiding principles when it came to choosing parts: functionality, reliability, and aesthetics. “If the product works well, is bulletproof and looks badass, then I wanted it on my rig,” he admits. The massive 24x12 Desert Tec Forged Punisher wheels and 40X15.50R24 Nitto Trail Grappler tires give the rig an imposing presence on the trail and at shows. “It doesn’t matter where my Jeep is at, the wheel and tire combo is what stands out!” The armor on Silver Panda is function and form with the Fab Fours FMJ kit being matched with the Metalcloak Hardline aluminum fenders, a Warn ZEON 10S

winch, and Rugged Ridge Vented Hood. The 6.5” BDS Suspension lift kit with Fox 2.0 shocks perform superbly providing the drivability he needs on- and off-road. The entire build took about a year’s worth of time, money, and support from build partners, but he admits it’s really a never-ending project. “People appreciate that my rig doesn’t look exactly like a mall crawler despite the 24” wheels. They see some scrapes and bruises on the wrap and armor that tell them it’s not just parked at Fashion Island in Newport Beach, CA. Jeep enthusiasts out on the trails are also surprised to see a highly modified JK aesthetically fixed up the way it is out on dirt roads.”

very custom truck owner wants to have the best ride possible and puts 110% into making that happen. Chase O’Krinsky of Premier Offroad & Performance in Katy, TX, knows too well the work, time and commitment needed to build the “best ride” around. For his latest project, he wanted something that straddled the line of a show truck and daily driver, coming up with Premier 2.0. Chase was set on the current body style Ford F-250 as the base vehicle and dressed it to the nines with a black and purple color scheme that he finished up with chrome accents to make it pop. “F-250s have always been my favorite truck,” he explains. “Once I sold my previous 2016 F-250, I had to build another. But this time, I swore I’d go all out!”

The initial design was to create something “big and bad,” as this was Chase’s dream truck that he’s been planning for the past four years now. With the chance to finally make his dream build a reality, he was ready to hit the ground running. He knew everything he wanted to include when it came down to the parts and mods and wasted no time on getting everything done. From start to finish, the frame-off truck build took seven months to complete, but it was all worth it in the end. The biggest “had to have” modification on his build was the 32” Plan B lift. “I’ve been following them on Instagram for awhile and have seen their kits and what they are capable of doing,” he admits. “It can do anything and everything else a smaller truck would be able to do. That’s very impressive for the size of the truck,” he details. To match the massive lift, Chase also wanted his wheel and tire set up to stand out. After finding out that TIS Forged

wheels would be including a set of 28s to their lineup, he knew right away he needed them on Premier 2.0. From there, he managed to get a rare set of Interco’s new 44” tall TSL Boggers, which fit with the Plan B lift perfectly. Rounding out the exterior, Chase also added J-Fab/Plan B front and rear bumpers, a bespoke Royalty Core grille, and headlights and mirrors done by Bullseye Retros in Austin, TX. For performance, he went with a 5” Rudy’s Performance fully polished exhaust system, No Limit Fabrication polished cold air intake and EzLynk Tuner with PPEI tuning. Inside sports a suede headliner, gloss black accents and a Lock’er Down Extreme center console vault with electronic keypad. Since Chase’s goal was to create a huge eyecatching truck that made jaws drop, he more than completed his mission. “I get a lot of, ‘This thing is huge’ or ‘It’s a lot bigger in person than in pictures’ responses when it’s in public,” he admits. “I’m

very happy with how everything turned out. Some things will change here and there, but it’s only to improve on its appeal.” Now Premier 2.0 will be used as a display for the shop, sitting out front as it catches people’s attention.

With the Juggernaut build underway, Chris was already brainstorming his next big masterpiece, which he was certain was going to be another Dually. When Trent mentioned he now wanted a green truck, Chris also had the idea and desire to incorporate fog machines into a build and decided it was time to try his hand at his biggest project to date. To pair his Juggernaut with another superhero, Chris figured the Green Lantern was perfect given Trent’s choice of color and started planning his new build even before Juggernaut was finished. But Chris was more than capable of doing both, given his history in the industry. He started a nationwide truck club called Level 7 a few years back and had a “pretty sweet” Toyota Tacoma land the cover of our magazine. “I grew the club to be a very prestigious club with trucks I felt were nicer than my own. There was no way I could feel confident being the president of a truck club without having what I felt being one of the biggest and baddest trucks around. I had to set the example and standard for the direction I was taking my club, which is why I first decided on a Dually.” For the Juggernaut, he shopped around for a few different Duallys and ended up going with the Ford F-350 Lariat. But for the Green Lantern, he was intent on building a Chevy. “Every big show I went to with the Juggernaut I’d have to compete with hundreds of Super Dutys. I love a good competition and the Juggernaut raked in quite a few trophies, but I saw the builds that were winning the Chevy categories and felt like someone needed to raise the bar.”

Both builds were built pretty close to the initial design portrayed in the renderings and feature a number of highlights. The F-350 features a custom grille by Royalty Core that incorporates the comic book character’s iconic helmet. The Snug Top camper shell with the SBC rack built on top just adds to a lifted Dually’s massiveness, which is what Chris wanted to achieve for a build dubbed the Juggernaut. For Green Lantern, Royalty Core provided another custom grille, which included special lights that Chris requested. The Green Lantern emblem is incorporated throughout the entire build, from the grille, bumpers, skid plates and more. “The biggest highlight of the Green Lantern build for me are the fog machines,” Chris admits. “It’s something that has never been done before and for being the first ones to do it, with the help of Atlas Vehicle Dynamics, I think we did a hell of a job!” Both builds turned out to be heavy-hitters in the show scene, with admirers praising both. “This is funny because it’s the same for both builds. When I built the Juggernaut people would come up to me and say, ‘I’m not a Ford fan, but damn, man, this thing is nice!’ With the Green Lantern it’s, ‘I’m not a Chevy fan but…’ I guess I need to build a Ram next and keep it going!” Chris loved the Juggernaut build and it’s still his girlfriend Alexis’ favorite of the two. But for him, he feels like he never got to fully appreciate the build because he was already too excited for the Green Lantern Chevy. “Both builds came out great and are something I’m truly proud of.” Both the Juggernaut and Green Lantern were built with the intentions of being show queens. While the Juggernaut has a new home, the Green Lantern is gearing up to steal the shows in 2019. But every once in a while he drives them, especially when his kids Trent and Caroline request it. “My kids are the coolest kids in school now!”

EMA is the automotive highlight or the year for our industry with so much time and effort spent in preparing for the show. Our presence with the DUB LIVE! area has continued to evolve over the years and has featured a variety of custom rides from every niche. With the inception of LFTD&LVLD, the number of custom Jeeps and trucks has dominated the area. As one of the most frequented areas of the show, our display didn’t disappoint! We saw a lot of new trends at the show, including many new aftermarket parts and accessories for the Jeep JL, which will only continue to grow in the coming years. However, the JK platform was as popular as ever with more custom examples displayed throughout the show. On the truck side, the most popular rig was the custom Ford F-250s that were everywhere with full-blown custom suspensions that needed to be outfitted with bigger and taller wheels and tires. From 26s to 30s to 44” tall tires, bigger and bolder will be something we’ll be seeing in the New Year. Accessorized truck beds were also the norm, with their over-the-top tonneaus, racks and shells. For this year’s SEMA we also partnered up with Amsoil for the LFTDxLVLD Best Truck Of Show and Best Jeep of Show awards! The awards went to Chris Varner for this over the top grabber blue 2010 Wrangler with an LS3 swap engine on 24” Dropstars Forged wheels and the hottest truck was Tim and Robbie’s “Ligma” Ford F-250 on 30x16 American Force Wheels and Fury Tires which was arguably the most talked about vehicle of the show. You’ll see both the Jeep and the Ford F-250 in upcoming features of LFTD&LVLD. 112
