EDITOR’S NOTES
S
ISSUE 20
how season is officially here and that means warmer weather and some of the hottest rigs you’ve ever laid eyes on. We’ve packed this Issue with loads of show queens and weekend warriors so that you’re inspired to create your own that’s ready for the summer or next show season!
Though Nissan doesn’t have a long history of producing full-size trucks, the Titan is a pretty stout pickup and deserves more attention. When Nissan was looking for an influential builder to customize one, BMS was the perfect shop to make the Titan come to life and show the possibilities for customization.
Brian’s Motorsports (BMS) is a well known name in the game and this Issue features three of his amazing builds. He has also built a few personal vehicles and recently decided to build this ’17 Ford F-250 Super Duty for a past SEMA Show, which has dubbed him the “King of Hustle.”
When a build “goes Hollywood,” it usually means someone makes it to the big time, which is exactly what Michael “Hollywood Mike” Rivera wanted to do with his lifted OBS Ford F-350 Dually. He went to Tweety’s Truck and Tire and made a cover-worthy ride that’s over the top!
Social media can bring a lot of attention to a build - even before it’s shown off anywhere. Thus was the case for Cade Smith as he was able to fund the entire build of this 2017 F-250 by working his Instagram account very strategically thanks to sponsors and the crew at BMS.
Tim Dunaway builds vehicles that demand your attention. So much so that he has taken 13 of them to SEMA in the past three years. For his most recent truck build, Tim decided it was time to add a little flavor to the mix with his 2018 Ford F-250 Platinum Edition which raised the bar in
the truck scene and definitely changes the game. Also at SEMA, he was awarded the LFTD & LVLD Best Truck presented by Amsoil! Kenny Hauk is like Midas of the customizing industry. Everything he touches turns to cover feature gold, which is probably why his name is synonymous with some of the baddest builds around - and we have two of them! The “The Loco Hauk” and “Hauk .45” are masterpieces that have the most intricate details we’ve seen on Jeeps! We also have coverage from the 2019 Lone Star Throwdown, which has grown to become one of the most highly anticipated trucks shows in the nation! So dig in and make sure you enjoy all the features in this Issue outside, drinking a cold one and soaking in all the eye candy!

The step pads are made up of a polyethylene tread that is overlaid by a stainless steel plate. BAJA DESIGNS ONX6 HYBRID LASER/LED LIGHT BAR AND XL LASER 760.560.2252 | BAJADESIGNS.COM /BAJADESIGNSOFFICIAL @BAJADESIGNSOFFICIAL
Baja Designs has released two new lighting products: the OnX6 Hybrid Laser/LED Light Bar and XL Laser. They’re both the first products from a new laser light range by Baja Designs, which is the only manufacturer industry-wide to offer this technology. The OnX6 Hybrid Laser/LED Light Bar takes advantage of the strengths of both LEDs and Laser diodes, covering all the bases with a single light bar that illuminates all of the primary lighting zones (near, mid-range, and long distance). The Baja 1000 is considered the toughest and most grueling of all offroad races, and the Baja Designs XL Laser and OnX6 Hybrid Laser/LED Light Bar – available for the first time this year – proved to be more than worthy of the challenge. $999.95

RUGGED RIDGE LED THIRD BRAKE LIGHT RING FOR THE 2018-2019 JEEP WRANGLER JL 770.614.6101 | RUGGEDRIDGE.COM /RUGGEDRIDGE | @RUGGEDRIDGE
Rugged Ridge’s new LED Third Brake Light Ring for the Wrangler JL addresses a common issue that plagues lifted Jeeps. When a Jeep is lifted above factory ride height and a larger diameter wheel and tire is used on the rear of the vehicle, the third brake light is moved upward, out of the normal field of vision. It is often obstructed by the spare tire itself, making it virtually useless. Many times the third brake light is removed altogether, creating a potentially serious safety concern. The LED Third Brake Light Ring mounts directly behind the spare tire on 2018-2019 Wrangler JL models, positioning it at a lower height for optimum visibility. Equipped with 93 Bright Red DIP LED’s around its perimeter, light output from the LED Ring projects through the wheel’s openings, creating a brilliant, attention-grabbing display that is impossible to ignore. Each LED Brake Light Ring is IP68 waterproof-rated for dependable performance in all weather conditions and is constructed from a rugged thermoplastic to save weight. The mounting plate is impervious to most chemicals and is pre-drilled, making it compatible with the JL lug patterns as well as factory rearview camera equipment. $77.76 21

FEDERAL TIRE RELEASES NEW XPLORA MTS
W
hat do you get when you cross an ultra-high performance tire and mud-terrain tire? The all-new Federal Tire Xplora MTS! Just two years ago, this innovative tire was just a concept, but thanks to the positive reaction to the futuristic-looking tire with wide, unidirectional grooves, Federal knew it needed to release it to the masses. The Xplora MTS will be available in 20”, 22” and 24” sizes, with 17” and 18” diameters will be coming later this year. Also, a 26” will be introduced in the middle of 2020. The Xplora MTS features V-shaped grooves, which provide tire rigidity and to protect against chips and cuts, was well as a striking armor-like appearance that catch the eye. The tire also has massive tire blocks that provide steering and traction control for added stability, safety and performance. Its wide, grooves reduce hydroplaning on wet roads, and provide added comfort and reduced noise (also aided by its linear shoulder blocks). According to Chairman Jamie Ma, the market “has been very conventional with M/T,” except for the new Xplora MTS, which is meant for consumers who want the looks of an off-road tire without having to hit the trails. Since the Xplora
28
MTS isn’t meant for heavy off-road duty, it’s best for Jeep and lifted light truck enthusiasts who have a desire for aggressive rubber that pound the pavement with ease. We had the chance to check out the new Xplora MTS and definitely agree that their MTS provides an excellent street ride that’s surprisingly quiet. An aggressive look, combined with a smooth and quiet street ride makes the Xplora MTS a solid option for your next mall crawling adventure.

MOBILE TOYS, INC. FORD F-250 POWERED BY KENWOOD
WORDS: KRISTIE REAL | PHOTOS: JORDAN COLE
C
hris Pate needed a looker when it came to creating a truck for his shop MobileToys, Inc. in Texas – something that would grab people’s attention while serving as a work horse for daily duties and for towing their enclosed trailer which is used to pick up customers’ classic cars for interior builds. As a shop that specializes in custom audio, video, security and performance for all sorts of motor needs, Chris and his team has work on a variety of automobiles, including trucks, cars, motor homes, UTVs, boats and more.
32
The 2016 Ford F-250 was the perfect choice given its towing capabilities and abundance of aftermarket parts, making the entire build seamless and easy. Calling her “Big Red,” Chris wanted everything on the F-250 color-matched in Ruby Red metallic paint. With a direct approach in mind, everything started with a lot of CAD drawings, he admits. Surprisingly, this was his first lifted truck build, so he made sure to partner with notable companies for the critical parts. With thorough
knowledge of mobile electronics, Chris knew he had to work with one of the best in the game and went with a Kenwood system. “They were looking for a great show truck and we were lucky enough to be picked,” he details. The Kenwood Excelon DNX995S head unit, with its 6.75” touchscreen display, features a bevy of impressive features that make long tows enjoyable for any driver. Then there’s four Excelon XR-1703HR midbass drivers installed in custom front door locations and one set of Kenwood XR-1603HR components installed in
custom side panels. Two Kenwood Excelon XRW10F subs, installed in a MTI Acoustics Stage 2 enclosure, make any tune more enjoyable. Custom Katzkin Dark Chocolate leather installed by MTI Acoustics and color matched interior paint by Anything Painted give the cabin a luxury look and feel. Mobile Toys, Inc. added custom front door panels and upper Sail panels in the Katzkin leather for the finishing touches.
33
With the audio system and interior on point, it needed to look as good as it sounded. An 8” BDS 4-link suspension system with PMF traction bars and FOX 2.0 shocks were chosen while a set of 22x12 American Force Nightmare FP wheels were paired 35X13.50R22 Toyo Open Country M/T tires. Performance is ramped up thanks to a MBRP 4” slim exhaust and S&B cold air intake. A Rough Country front grill with 20” LED bars and Plashlight rock lights accent the wheel wheels. AMP Research PowerSteps were installed for easy in and out access. Big Red was ready for the public and was shown off at MERA KnowledgeFest 2018 which is a three-day event put on by the Mobile Electronics Association. Now, the Mobile Toys, Inc. demo and tow pig is putting in daily work at the shop. “As my first lifted truck, I don’t really have a comparison. But compared to the ones we’ve built for clients, it’s my favorite!”

TIM DUNAWAY’S 2018 FORD F-250 PLATINUM EDITION WORDS: EDDIE MALONEY | PHOTOS: BRIAN McGEE
S
ince 1967, the SEMA Show has brought together aftermarket manufacturers, original equipment manufacturers (OEM), media, car dealers, specialty equipment distributors, installers, retailers and restoration specialists. Currently the SEMA Show is held annually in Las Vegas, NV, and has seen numbers reaching nearly 162,000 attendees. Stepping on the show floor can be intimidating, and many visitors never truly get to see it all. With hundreds of featured vehicles on display, it’s sometimes hard to comprehend what goes into building a “SEMA quality” vehicle. Over the past few years, the lifted truck and off-road scene has taken the market by storm, with hundreds of lifted trucks built for the annual gathering. Needless to say, with so much “bling” in one spot, it can be a bit difficult to stand out.
37
But that doesn’t seem the case for Tim Dunaway, who builds vehicles that demand your attention. Hailing from a small town due north of Houston called The Woodlands, Tim’s rides are in such demand that he has taken 13 of them to SEMA in the past three years. “I envision how I want my builds to look; they can’t look ordinary. I want them to be remembered,” he asserts. With that many quality builds, it’s hard to overlook Tim’s vision, which is why his builds have graced the covers of numerous publications over the years.
For the 2018 Show, Tim decided it was time to add a little flavor to the mix. He picked up a new 2018 Ford F-250 Platinum Edition from Planet Ford of Spring, Texas, just a few months shy of the SEMA Show. “I have built many trucks over the years, and with how hot the scene has been, I knew I had to build one that was different,” he admits. So immediately after the purchase, Tim got in touch with Robbie Bryant of KEG Media and discussed the design and management of the entire build. Robbie put Tim in touch Rob Pique of Plan B Fabrication and soon the build was about to come to fruition. Shortly after the truck arrived in central Florida, the infamous “SEMA crunch” began. The Plan B crew wasted no time starting the build

with a custom radius arm setup and installed SORD coil over shocks. The steering system was converted to include heim joints and a high steer crossover setup for added stability. Plan B also went a step further and installed a dual steering stabilizer setup on the front axle, along with a 1.75” custom-built front sway bar kit with full frame cross members on the front and rear. The entire suspension utilizes a double overlay setup, with mirror stainless steel finishes. The finishing touches to this custom setup were a set of massive American Force 30x16 Nemesis wheels wrapped in a new set of FURY Off Road 42x16.50R30 Country M/T tires that were also to debut at the show.
39
After the stance was complete, Tim was on the hunt for a local shop near Plan B to work on the rest of the mods to complete the build in time for SEMA. Aftering hearing rave reviews about Ultimate Auto in Orlando, FL, he called on owner Joe Labon for his services. At this point, Tim’s brand-new Ford was in several hundred pieces at two different shops. But thanks to two amazing crews, Tim was able to get it all done in time and loved the result. Ultimate Auto hooked up the Ford with a custom BASF Grabber Blue Pearl and a new widebody exterior, with custom Alea Leather

interior and the cleanest sound system money can buy. Words cannot fully explain the massive amount of detail that went into this build and it was completed in time for the big show. Even before Tim’s F-250 arrived at SEMA Show it had garnered a tremendous amount of attention via social media and became the talk of the show once it was positioned at the American Force display. Amongst the many awesome trucks that were showcased it was unanimous that he was awarded the LFTD & LVLD Best Truck of Show Presented by AMSOIL!

GOING HOLLYW 1997 FORD F-350 DUALLY
WORDS | PHOTOS: PHIL GORDON
“G
oing Hollywood” is usually a phrase given when someone makes it to the big time. Known for the bright lights and lavish lifestyles, Hollywood is the Mecca for success and fame, but it can also be an aura that changes the way you look at things, and makes everything just a little bit sweeter. Michael Rivera from Odessa, Texas, grew up on the Western edge of Texas in Fort Stockton, but ventured to Odessa with his family. While his two older brothers were heavily involved in the automotive lifestyle, Michael focused on working on an oil rig.
IT WAS LIKE I WAS IN A DIFFERENT WORLD OUT THERE, IT WAS THE VERY BEST OF THE BEST.” But around that time, he noticed that the lifted truck scene was just getting started and that everyone at the oil fields had lifted trucks that were being utilized for work. It was there that he met Eden Gonzalez, who had all the connections in the truck scene and helped him get started with his own customizing journey. After he began picking Eden’s brain on what he wanted to do, he was introduced to Cesar Olivas known in the community as “Tweety” and owner of Tweety’s Truck and Tire, a shop responsible for some of the baddest trucks in the Texas area. With his newfound interested, Michael inquired about a build of his own and got the ball rolling.
44
WOOD
Michael purchased a Dodge 3500 welding rig and had it lifted modestly, but his love for the utility truck wore off and it was time for something better. He then went out and bought a new Dodge Mega Cab, but it still wasn’t big enough. Finally, he chose a brand new 2017 Ford pickup and a 1997 Ford F-350 as a two-for-one buy. Despite loving the Dodge brand, Michael couldn’t resist having both a new Ford body style and OBS at the same time. The trucks, 20 years apart, became like brothers and he carefully
added custom parts to each given they were now special members of his family. But Michael saw something extra special in the OBS and knew it was destined for something greater. Michael took the classic Ford to Tweety’s to add a Rough Country lift that was powder coated Lollipop Red with Fox shocks. The build wasn’t intricate by any means, but looked good for Michael at the time. About seven months later, Michael went to the SEMA Show in Las Vegas where his vision changed. “It was like I was in a different world out there,” Michael adds. “It was the very best of the best, and I wanted to be there with them.” Once he arrived back home, he wasted no time making plans to change the OBS.
45
Because he knew he needed to step up his game if he ever wanted to turn heads at SEMA, Michael contacted RYD MotorSports in Vancouver, BC, because of their reputation of building some of the best rigs around. The builders at RYD manufactured a 14 lift for the front and back, along with the 4-link setup they custom built in house. Some 2008 Super Duty axles were fabricated and 3.0 triple bypass bags over King Shocks with full high steer and dual steering stabilizers were built and sent to Michael to install. Tweety’s was enlisted to mount the new massive lift with the adjustable heights. When it came time to add some exterior additions, Michael opted for Bodyguard Bumpers front and back with Royal Hooks and lights from Outlaw LED. Originally, he chose a brown and gold paint scheme and dubbed the build Gold $chlager. But then changed the colors and had Lozoya Graphics and Painting coat the entire OBS in Blue Dove that set off the new gold lift components. However, Gold $chlager was already what everyone was calling the truck so he kept it. The good people at Hornblasters added a set of train horns powder coated in Dove Blue and gold to match. To help Michael getting in and out of the newly raised Ford, AMP power side-steps were mounted and painted to match.

Michael’s next step was refreshing the vintage interior. We all know that the interior is the most used portion of any vehicle and where we spend most of the time, so it needed to be upgraded and updated. Michael found a small shop in Dallas and had them add white leather bucket electric seats from a 2010 Ford truck and add blue piping, while fiberglass blue accents were added to the door panels. Even the seat belts were dyed blue to match the new interior color scheme. The rear bench seat was removed and replaced with bucket seats for added space. Blue carpeting was added throughout the entire cabin to bring together the cohesive look. Once completed, Michael took the freshlybuilt Ford classic OBS to the 2018 SEMA show and was able to fulfill his dream to be among the elite. Michael wishes to thank his beautiful wife Ashley and their little boy Michael Peyton for their support and patience watching him fulfill his dream. A special thanks to his two older brothers and his parents for instilling in him the dedication and fortitude to keep pushing forward when it
seemed impossible. He also sends a big thanks to Eden Gonzalez and Tweety from Tweety’s Tire for always being there to help and to construct one of the best OBS Fords on the planet. It took three trucks and great connections for Michael to reach Hollywood status, and now “Hollywood Mike” has set the bar in the OBS game.

THIS TITAN XD DARES TO BE BOLD
I
t’s always refreshing to see something different and this Nissan Titan XD really takes a walk on the wild side. Though there are many options in trucks to build, the custom scene is dominated by Chevys and Fords. Be it brand loyalty or the influence of others, most don’t try something different. Yes, aftermarket parts may be harder to find for trucks like this, but the results stand out from the rest. Though Nissan doesn’t have a long history of producing full-size trucks, the Titan is a pretty stout pickup. A few years ago, the company redesigned it and offered the XD version, which was beefed up yet still not quite capable as a three-quarter-ton truck. However, the XD does come with a Cummins V8 turbo-diesel engine. That in itself makes it pretty tempting for anyone to switch teams.
50
51
In order to help create some buzz around the Titan XD, Nissan was looking for an influential builder to customize one. Through a dealer contact in Nashville, TN, the folks at Nissan heard about Brian’s Motorsports (BMS) and the work that the shop is capable of producing on a regular basis. After meeting with owner, Brian Hayes, a deal was made to have the truck done up for the upcoming SEMA Show. If you have checked out the all BMS-built trucks featured in this magazine, you would know that the shop worked on two other vehicles that were destined for SEMA at the same time. BMS already had a full load, but the opportunity to work with a large automaker is one you don’t pass up. Soon enough, a truck arrived at the shop, but it was not the one you see here. Apparently, they sent one with a two-tone paint job, but BMS requested to have one in a single color. After the mix up was settled, BMS was sent this black Titan and it was off to work.
52
53
Though the plans for this truck were finalized in early summer, parts did not show up until fall as they were still being designed. Since the defining part of this truck is the lift, it was critical to get it as soon as possible. The Bulletproof Suspension system arrived a mere few weeks before the show. It was still in a prototype stage and there were no instructions. Because the staff at BMS are professionals, they were able to work out the kinks with the 12” kit. You may also notice that the exterior is a bit different than factory versions. The biggest change was with the fenders as these flared versions came from McNeil Racing. Making them function was not an easy task since they only came with the outer shells. BMS had to then spend countless hours fabricating inner front fenders to make it all work together. Afterwards, the exterior was dressed up with Bodyguard bumpers and a Go Rhino Sport Bar 2.0, with retractable bar for the LED lighting.

With the truck together, the body along with the new fenders, was painted black by John Hall. One thing you may notice is that the truck has only two colors and the secondary chocolate candy was added with various powder coated pieces that match a factory color found in the interior. The finishing touch was the one-off KMC 24x14 two-piece forged version of the XD838 wheels, and they were wrapped in 40” Nitto Trail Grappler M/T tires. BMS finished this truck just in time for it to be loaded up and headed to the big show, where it made a debut in the KMC Wheels booth. This Titan XD has a distinctive look and proves that these trucks are a great alternative for anyone looking to own something a bit different.

BMS REIGNS SUPREME WITH DETERMINATION AND HARD WORK WORDS: FUELISH MEDIA | PHOTOS: BRIAN McGEE
I
f you really want to take the world by storm and make something of yourself, you better know how to hustle. Many people want to have it all, but fail to commit to all the hard work it takes to build a name people will recognize. Striving to make it big means sacrificing time and really giving it your all. Brian Hayes knows this all too well given he’s built his business, Brian’s Motorsports (BMS), from the ground up over the years. Based out of Hendersonville, TN, this shop specializes in lifts and is the region’s largest of its kind. The 10,000-square-foot facility has 15 employees wrenching on a daily basis. Turning dreams into reality is BMS’ specialty and the crew is dedicated to creating nothing but the best rides around.
57
Building up a business like this takes time and does not come overnight. In 1999, Brian started out with humble beginnings by selling wheels and tires in his backyard. Back then 20” wheels were the hottest trend in custom vehicles, and Brian was purchasing tires in a bulk of two hundred at a time. Early on, Brian made sure to always take care of his customers the best he could and network with other businesses. For him, these things are the key to his success. Two decades later, Brian’s business has transformed into a massive production. He has also built a few personal vehicles and recently decided to build this ’17 Ford F-250 Super Duty for a past SEMA Show. Since Brian’s shop specializes in lifted trucks, he figured he would go all out on this personal ride. He ordered up a 10”-12” adjustable Kelderman front and rear lift kit to get things going. This suspension system uses a Hadley management kit to control the airbags, which gives this truck up to a 16” lift. 58
SEMA builds are generally rushed and this truck was no different as parts were still being developed during the months before the show. The 28x16 GRID Off-Road GF11 wheels were one of those pieces still getting some final touches. Running behind on time, they were dropped off to him at the airport with Southwest Airlines and then an Uber driver picked them up and delivered them to BMS. With all the parts together, Mr. Speed Coatings then powder coated them and the wheels were then wrapped in 42- tall Fury Country Hunter MT tires. The exterior was upgraded with bumpers from VPR 4x4 and a grille from Gravel Empire. Then, a host of LED lighting was added to help with nighttime visibility. For some extra performance, a 4 catback exhaust system from MBRP was added. Once finished, the truck made a strong debut at the show. Brian has worked hard to get where he is now in life and all his efforts have paid off and allowed him to create one badass daily driver.

AN F-250 BUILT FROM THE SPOILS OF SOCIAL MEDIA WORDS: FUELISH MEDIA | PHOTOS: BRIAN McGEE
W
e are living in a different age as the fabric we live by is changing rapidly. It’s happening so fast that there is a clear difference between generations. Though the digital age might seem as if it’s been here forever, it’s still in its infancy. To older folks this is nothing to take seriously. It’s all Millennials know and they are using these new tools as a means to live by. The digital era can have a large influence on the world and make all the difference in your personal life.
62
Cade Smith is living proof of this, as he was able to fund the entire build of this 2017 F-250 by working his Instagram account very strategically. It may sound like a fairy tale, but it’s the complete truth. This type of success on a digital platform doesn’t come overnight and takes a lot of work. Just about everyone is on Instagram, but most use it for entertainment purposes while others like Cade dedicate numerous hours each day to build a page for the sake of gaining a large audience.
63
So how does one go about generating a large footprint in the digital space? Well, Cade’s story began when he was 14 and launched his page, @dieseltrucking just for fun. Determined to build it up, he plugged away while gaining big numbers. After getting about 120K followers, Cade had to ask his parents to start a PayPal account in order for him to accept payment from those wanting to advertise on his page. Fast forward a few years and Cade’s page now has over 1,000,000 followers. With big numbers, he is able to bring in a steady cash flow with his work on social media.
64
Cade was previously not big on custom trucks and had no one influencing him when he started his venture. Once things got serious, he had offers for sponsorships and figured he might as well help his partners by building trucks. This doesn’t mean these truck builds were free; there are always costs involved when taking on a project like this. The F-250 is Cade’s fourth truck and was his first SEMA build. With a rendering from Keg Media on hand, the truck was taken to Brian’s Motorsports (BMS) for the Kelderman lift to fit
the 24x16 Specialty Forged wheels with 40” Toyo Open Country M/T tires. The truck also features Fusion bumpers, a custom Gravel Empire grille, Royal Hooks and a grip of LED lighting. Once completed, the truck rolled into the Las Vegas Convention Center where it sat for a week in the Toyo Tires Tread Pass. With this build, Cade proved that legitimate actions can happen through social media efforts and it is nothing to scoff at.

enny Hauk is like Midas of the customizing industry. Everything he touches turns to customizing gold, which is probably why his name is synonymous with some of the baddest and most unique around. Always one to outdo himself, Kenny is always pushing his personal limits when it comes to annual builds. For these projects, Kenny wanted to show the awesome power of steam and, of course, draw a crowd wherever he showed the massive beast. The Loco Hauk Steam Jeep looks like something out of a movie, with a faux locomotive exterior that perfectly defines the saying “hell on wheels.” Weighing in at a hefty six tons, this Wrangler is almost unrecognizable! “The Loco Hauk name is fitting not just because of the locomotive influence, but also because it’s ‘loco’ or completely crazy!” Kenny describes. Known for reworking Jeeps into bespoke masterpieces, Kenny knew the Loco needed way more space to fit the boiler, reservoir and blower system, which is one of the main reasons he decided to build a 6x6 Wrangler (a talent he has plenty of experience in). “It’s the most insane thing we could come up with,” he admits.
69
Besides the longer wheelbase, the matte black and brass details definitely catch the eyes and perfectly fit the inspiration gathered from the golden age of steam-powered machines. Thanks to numerous partnerships throughout the years, Kenny had lots of products to choose from when it came time to build something truly unique, which is a sight to behold in person. Witnessing this machine is a serious experience as you hear its burner ignite and catch a shimmer of heat above its massive 1,000-PSI boiler with 55-gallon water tank. Then a black coil of smoke starts to rise from the back of the rig, while small wisps of steam also rise from the hood. The whole experience is similar to watching a freight train lurch to life – the exact experience Kenny was going for when he first conjured up this behemoth.
“The Loco needed to feel like it was created in a parallel universe where steam powered vehicles were the norm. Lots of attention was given to the way steam was released from the Jeep. The visual of steam rings puffing out of the front wheel wells and seeing the flames inside the boiler through the glass HAUK letters in the back were all carefully planned to draw attention to its unique source of power.” The final product is very close to the initial design rendering, Kenny admits. The 100ci V4 steam engine was built on a design by Charles Keen for the Keen Streamliner 2 automobile back in the 1960s. Capable of 120 to 140 horsepower, Loco also generates about 2,500 ft.-lb. of torque, allowing it to go between 50 to 60 mph. Its standard 16-gallon fuel cell has been converted to run on kerosene, which is what heats the boiler when burned. A custom 4” BDS 4-link suspension with FOX shocks smooths the ride while a set of GRID GD1s wrapped in 41.5x13.50R17 Pit Bull Rockers complete its stance. Loco benefits from a River Raider full body 3/16th steel armor exterior, modified Star Fabricating hardtop, Vision-X 48V locomotive lights, Seven Pipe oil reservoir grille, Warn 12-S Zeon Winch and Auburn Gear Max lock locker. 70
But Kenny’s favorite parts are the massive vintage steam gauge located in the center of the dash, the vintage steam whistles and the seven pipe oil reservoir grille. “I also love the one Keen steam engine that came out of the Tom Kimmel steam museum for the project. The challenges of making a functional steam-powered Jeep could fill an entire book! But Tom Kimmel and the entire modern steam community helped us overcome every obstacle we faced! The Loco is seriously an attraction everywhere it goes and is the most universally loved vehicle Kenny’s built to date. “It’s undoubtedly a Hauk build and fits nicely into our ultra-detailed, over-the-top lineup!” he exclaims.

But the Loco was just one of his latest builds, with his Willys Hauk .45 truck that’s just as impressive. This one was meant to be a fun daily driver that mixed hot rodding, off-roading and the wild west. It was named after the Colt .45, which is an iconic hand gun that many consider “won the west.” “The Hauk .45 needed to feel like it came straight from the old west. It needed to look right at home in an old Western town being driven by Billy the Kid,” Kenny details. “The Willys truck had some great lines and became the body of choice.” After mocking up the build, he and his team decided to both chop and stretch Willys cab to turn it into a dually. He also took to tons of old photos from this era and western movies for inspiration, which is what led him to creating the saloon-door shaped rear coil over mounts, longhorn steer hood emblem and the holster door panels.
72
73
But the Hauk .45 has details on top of it’s details! The mind-blowing engraving by Hernan from Engrave-it are one of Kenny’s favorites, noting that he was honored to have his work all over the truck. Another cool feature is that the glass is actually reclaimed chicken wire glass from an old building that the pros at RT11 Glass installed. Wood work by Ben Messler brought the wood bed and wood floor interior to life. It also features a complicated multiple layer paint scheme which is hardened steel mixed with aged leather for a unique look. “That was achieved by multiple layers of blue and brown air brushing, topped with layers of transparent candy root beer paint and a matte clear paint,” he explains.
74
75
Currently, the Hauk .45 is ripping around the streets of Abu Dhabi with its new owner, but it was chosen as one of the Top 7 Trucks of SEMA in the 2016 Battle of the Builder’s competition. “It was always a crowd favorite at both hot rod and off-road events.” While these two builds are undoubtedly some of the best from Hauk Designs, Kenny keeps raising the bar for himself and his crew – and he always exceeds himself in the end. Kenny and his team are now filming the second season of “Hauk Machines.” Catch up on the first season on Amazon Prime! or customizing shops like All Out Offroad in Houston, Texas, car builds are more than show queens and billboards on four wheels. Instead, their builds show off the talent of the individuals behind the scenes and showcase new products (bespoke and manufactured) worldwide. All Out Offroad owner Chance Kamp is no stranger to impressive vehicles, with his own fleet of luxuries and trucks for daily use. Jeeps were just becoming popular in the region at the time of the build, so Chance knew he needed expand his customizing skills to attract more Jeep-loving clients. “I know with each fresh trend and style I need to stay relevant,” Chance admits. “It was time to purchase my first Jeep to customize.” Chance and his partner Bryan Denhart went to Finnegan Jeep in Houston and picked out a then new 2017 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sport in Chance’s favorite color red. Immediately after bringing the Wrangler back to the All Out Offroad headquarters, the black top and everything else that could be removed from the body and interior was taken out and color-matched to the bright red exterior color. A DV8 Avenger hood was added to replace the standard factory version, and VPR front and rear bumpers were installed, along with a tire carrier in the rear. For a more aggressive look, Chance opted for Poison Spyder aluminum standard-width front and rear flares that were color-matched and mounted on the Jeep. The front and rear inner fenders were then custombuilt and painted to match.
78
79
For the next six months, the Jeep was completely gutted, including its suspension, brakes and interior. The standard braking system was replaced with Baer’s 13.5” front pro brake system with slotted and cross drilled rotors. Six-piston red calipers with custom mounting brackets were added on the rear, while Baer’s 12” SS4 complete brake system was installed for the front. To lift the Jeep off of its basic stance, Michael Benedict added the Rubicon Express 5.5” coilover extreme duty 4-link long arm lift. Each suspension component was coated in the matching fire red to match the rest of the JK. A dual ATS steering stabilizer kit was chosen, along with sway bars and a custom drive shaft. Now that the body and lift were done to Chance’s liking, it was time to turn up the motor to give the Wrangler a little “giddy-up.” A complete Borla S-type stainless steel exhaust system was installed from the motor back, and a Superchip Flashpaq performance tuner programmer helps add more horsepower. Finally, a K&N cold air intake was put into place for a cleaner flow. Everything under the hood was coated in red to blend into the truck’s color theme.
80
Inside the Jeep, the stock interior was completely gutted and Alea Leather was also added in the exterior color scheme. All interior plastics were given extra attention to seamlessly blend in with the red interior accents. As anyone that owns a Jeep knows, the acoustics are amazing and Chance wanted to make them even better by having the stock head unit removed and replaced with an Alpine DVD unit. Hertz speakers were lined throughout the cabin for superior sounds. Under the rear seats, he strategically placed two JL Audio 10TW3 flat subwoofers powered by two JL Audio amplifiers built into enclosed cases underneath the front seats. The guys over at American Force Wheels helped with the matching 24” Rook wheels powder coated red and black, then fitted them inside Nitto Trail Grapplers. With everything almost complete, Chance and his team added the finishing touches by mounting a Warn ZEON 10-S Platinum winch with Factor 55 shackle up front. AMI Demon hooks were painted to match and installed on the bumpers. DV8 Offroad Rock Rail power steps were affixed
for an easier time getting in and out of the Wrangler. The lighting system was upgraded with JW Speaker headlights and custom-painted tail lights in the rear. Rigid rock lights were mounted underneath to make sure the undercarriage and work done to the suspension didn’t go unnoticed. Chance and his team at All Out Offroad were able to rebuild the Jeep from the ground up in just under six full months inside their Richmond, Texas location showing how quickly their team can work. With five different All Out Offroad locations and growing, Chance certainly has the right pedigree to success. His 2017 Jeep Wrangler was first purchased to prove that he could build an impressive 4x4 in the age of Jeeps, but the project quickly turned into one of his go-to vehicles, which he enjoys cruising in any time he gets. He wishes to thank his entire team at All Out and his partner, Bryan Denhart, for all the help and making his life easier on a day-to-day basis!

THE NATION’S LARGEST TRUCK SHOW
T
hey say everything is bigger in Texas, and in our experience, the expression is very true. This especially goes for the truck scene, as there is a large number of stunning examples of them from this region of the country. Texas also happens to have a strong oil and agriculture industry, which explains the abundance of trucks. Where there are more trucks, there are more custom versions of them to follow. With all these vehicles roaming around Texas, there was a need for a place to showcase them all. The Houston area has the strongest concentration of enthusiasts in the state, and in the past there was a truck show just about every weekend throughout the year. However, none were held at a large enough venue to really thrive. A number of years back, Todd “Radar” Hendrex and Lonnie Thompson saw the need for a better show and came up with the idea of the Lone Star Throwdown (LST), which was first held in 2012 at the same place it is now - the Montgomery County Fairgrounds in Conroe, TX. Of course, the initial show was nothing like it is now as there were just a few hundred trucks in attendance. Along the way truck enthusiasts of all kinds began to flock to LST and some things changed along the way. As the crowds grew, the masses flooded through the gates and local roadways. After a few mishaps, Lonnie and Radar decided that the show would be limited to 2,000 vehicles and all must be pre-registered ahead of time. With each passing year, the LST experience has only gotten better in our opinion. As of late, this show has dominated as many builders have made it “the place to debut a vehicle.” With a nice line of custom billet awards made by Philbuilt Designs, people flock from all over the country to get a piece of the action. Besides the few “Best of” trophies given out, only the top one hundred vehicles take home some bragging rights. With only 5% of vehicles earning awards, you could say the competition is stiff. With severe winter storms happening all over the country, Conroe was to see some rainfall in the forecast. Though the looming weather threatened to put a halt to the show (held on February 22-24, 2019), it couldn’t rain on this parade. Luckily, the majority of the downfall happened early on and the only real issue was with muddy sections of the grounds. With a good wipe down on trucks, the show went on to prove it is still the largest of its kind. We can’t wait until next year and see what shows up. If you plan on attending next year’s event, you can get the latest information at lonestarthrowdown.com or their Instagram page, @lonestarthrowdown. Just make sure to plan your trip in advance, as it will sell out for vehicle registrations and nearby hotels get booked quickly.
