he weather is officially warmer and that means weekend car shows, trips and more fun under the sun! If you haven’t gotten your ride ready to show off now that the weather’s nicer what are you waiting for?! If it’s inspiration you need, we’ve got plenty in this Issue’s pages... Edward Ho’s Toyota Tundra was something he had been wanting to build for quite a while. After seeing various Tundras dressed up at past SEMA Shows, he knew he needed to try his hand at his own. The result was his unique Chase Truck Tundra that’s definitely one of the best on the scene. Eric Gosselin of ECD is no stranger to wrapping tons of show-worthy rigs so when it came to do his, he had to come correct. He chose a unique wrap inspired by Jordan 5 Retros accented with red and went to work creating his very own Desert Max.
With Jeep bringing back it’s iconic truck, Taylor Sprayberry wanted to emphasize the legendary Jeep pickup by turning an old J10 into a modern legend. With vintage looks and up-to-date amenities, his J10 he calls “KAOS” will get you excited for the upcoming Jeep Gladiator!
Christopher Varner knows that life’s too short to care about the haters and created the big blue Papasmurf Jeep Wrangler with the help of his admiring daughter. While some might not approve of the bold Jeep, Christoper isn’t one to seek approval or follow the norm!
Building a truck that stands out from the crowd takes a bit of creativity and imagination. Chad “Cantcolor” Carothers is a person that is always finding new ways to express his visions and his Great White Chevy Silverado perfectly embodies that trait.
Michael Garza would flip through truck magazines as a kid and now he’s been fortunate enough to have his own in one! His Xcalibur Ford F-250 Super Duty might be his first, but it certainly won’t be his last.
When Eden Gonzales needed the ultimate toy hauler, he built The Commander - a dieselpowered Hummer H2 that’s anything but ordinary. Big, bagged and dressed in bold camo, his H2 is hard to miss and definitely commands your attention!

T
he Jeep J10 is a storied vehicle – one that diehard Jeep fans admire for its rugged capabilities in a coveted truck form. The pickup truck was made by AMC spanning from 1974 to 1983 and featured in a variety of trim options, including the Honcho, Golden Eagle and 10-4 packages. It was touted as Jeep’s “performance truck” until its final days. Getting your hands on one isn’t that hard these days, thanks to the Internet and social media. When it came down to choosing the base vehicle for a build, Taylor Sprayberry knew it had to be the J10 after he heard rumors of Jeep introducing another modernized pickup truck (which has now been named the Gladiator and was first unveiled at the 2018 LA Auto Show). “I thought it would be cool to emphasize the legendary Jeep pickup in honor of the new Gladiator JT,” he admits.

Originally, the thought process behind the build was to nix the truck bed and instead have “more of a tube-style chassis back half,” Taylor explains. But like any customizer who knows how things really go down, initial designs always changed. “Although this would have been an extremely cool aspect of the build, I decided to keep it a little more along the lines of its traditional appearance by keeping the bed on it.” However, he did shorten the bed and chassis by nearly two feet, which gave it a distinct look. But one thing that didn’t change was the fact that Taylor wanted the J10 to have a modern MOPAR color scheme, considering it was an old-school Jeep. Desiring something that stood out, he went with a HEMI Orange Pearl as the main color, and Transparent Copper by Prismatic Powders for the accent color. “It’s not something you see paired with orange too often, but I thought the contrast between the two colors would work perfectly!” 36

And he was right! The final result draws the eyes thanks to the unique color combo, in addition to its various mods, such as the Jeep JL bumpers and sliders, link suspension with 14” coilovers and filled body lines. Taylor enlisted the help of his dad, and the two were quite busy doing all the work themselves, including the suspension fabrication, paint and body work in four month’s time. “This build was something I truly value due to the fact that we taught ourselves how to do everything, and that my father and I completed the build together in our own garage.” Naming his creation “KAOS,” Taylor put more than $30,000 into his build that consisted of a total of three trucks to piece it all together. The J10 was officially unveiled at the 2017 Lifted Truck Nationals, but was slightly reworked to feature Bodyguard Bumpers for last year’s SEMA Show. “Everyone loved seeing another piece of history resurrected from the dead being displayed amongst all the newer model vehicles. The Jeep J10 is not an average build that you see everyday at shows, so people are always enthused by seeing something out of the box.”
As the public eagerly awaits the production of the new Gladiator truck, they can feast their eyes at its predecessor whenever Taylor showcases it at events, with the occasional joy ride here and there. “I’m beyond pleased with the outcome of the build, but it will never be truly done,” he admits. “I’m always looking at ways to improve the build and achieve ultimate functionality.

hen it comes to customizing, you can’t be afraid of your vision. You can’t care about what the haters will say. After all, you can’t build the rig of your dreams based on other people’s perceptions. You have to do you and do it well! You can’t please everyone, right?! Christopher Varner of Varnbilt Motorsports knows this all too well. As a seasoned builder, he’s always customized his rides to his own liking or that of his customers wishes. Life’s too short to want to please everyone, so when it came time to create a custom Jeep like no other, he went with his gut and transformed a 2010 Jeep Wrangler into Papasmurf, which his nine-year-old daughter absolutely adores. “You either love it or hate it,” he mentions. “Most hardcore Jeep guys tend to hate it,” he explains. “That’s because it’s not your normal 3” spring lift on 35s. We don’t follow the basic trends, we like to set them!”

WE DON’T FOLLOW THE BASIC TRENDS, WE LIKE TO SET THEM!” – CHRISTOPHER VARNER Since his oldest daughter loves Jeeps, Christopher wanted a ride they both could work on together. “My daughter kept telling me she wanted to build a blue Jeep and I had to jump at the opportunity to make her dreams come true.” Since he works for a large car dealer in New Jersey, he was able to get his hands on a mint condition JK with a blown engine to use as the base. “I knew this was the Jeep for the frame-off project we’d be able to work on together, adding an awesome LS3.” After getting a few renderings from Truck Guru Designs, Christopher and his daughter went right to work to create Papasmurf! Having maintained and solidified relationships with brands thanks to his previous builds, he was able to work with all the companies he initially wanted, acquiring parts and accessories that would work well for a show Jeep that was actually driven. “Since I live by the beach, I make sure all my customs feature materials (heim joints, bolts, etc.) that will hold up to the sea salt and humidity we see here on the East Coast.” 43
But before any of the exterior, interior or suspension could be done, the motor needed some fine tuning so that he’d be able to work the suspension around the powerful V8. Christopher built a 6.2-liter LS3 that gives 525 horsepower to power Papasmurf. With the engine complete, he moved on to the custom 16” 4-link lift built by Exit74 Fab, which also includes a custom cradle/axle truss, 2016 Ford F-350 Dana 60 front differential and a F-350 Sterling 10.5” rear differential, Fabtech Dirtlogic 2.4 Resi 14” travel coilovers, PSC hydro assist steering and Drivelines Plus front and rear driveshafts. A set of 24x14 Dropstars Forged F60BM wheels wrapped in massive 19.5/44-24 Super Swamper TSL Boggers complete the stance. For the exterior, Papasmurf needed to be able to stand out at the beach or at a show. “We sprayed it with Raptor Liner. It’s a mixed Grabber Blue, which is a factory color from the 2018 Ford Mustangs.”

Christopher also teamed up with BodyGuard to add their front and rear bumpers, fender flares, rock sliders and inner fenders. The American Fastbacks hard top and hood gives it a distinct look, while the DBCustom “Varnbilt” grille, Cliffride LED hoodcowl and JCR rear corner guards with 4” LED tails, Royal Hooks billet handles and shackles and Infinterule security locking pins round out exterior accessories. The Ace slanted tire carrier, Rhino adjustable drop hitch and Warn wireless winch with synthetic rope all add to the JK’s capabilities, while the BAMF LED Offroad Lighting provides the light needed for night cruises by the beach. The interior is adorned with Roadwire black leather that’s double-diamond stitched with blue suede inserts. A 2017 JK dash swap and blue suede personalized steering wheel completes the interior mods. “This build stands up pretty tall to my past builds given every part was custommade and the only thing we reused was the body and the stock frame,” he admits.

Getting everything perfect took a “whole lot of dollars” and about six months, which paid off since it won LFTDxLVLD’s Best Jeep presented by Amsoil at the 2018 SEMA Show. EDEN GONZALES’ DIESEL-POWERED H2 TOY HAULER
W
ell versed in taking builds to new levels, Eden Gonzales of Ground N’ Pound Motorsports and Team Billet certainly knows how to get more out of his vehicles. His Hummer H2 was built to be the ultimate toy hauler. For many years, Eden has had a yearning for a vehicle that could haul his buddies while also trailering his side-by-sides to local mud or rock crawling parks. He figured that the military-inspired H2 could be beefed up to handle these requirements.
To get things moving, Eden commissioned Strictly Custom Designs to draft a rendering of how the entire build would look. To gauge the excitement for the upcoming build, the rendering was posted on social media and received great praise. However, due to another truck being a priority, Eden had to revisit his H2 rendering. Luckily for him, Ultimate Air Ride came across the social media rendering and expressed their interest in creating this beast. But there was one caveat: Eden didn’t have an actual vehicle yet.

A big requirement Eden had for his H2 build was for it to be able to haul a fully loaded trailer. His thoughts were that if the H2 was powered by a diesel engine, he would get the power he wanted plus better reliability. After searching the web for the SUV, he came across an H2 that already had an LBZ Duramax diesel swap performed. After checking it out, Eden made the trek from Midland, TX, to purchase the H2 in Utah, and then had the SUV delivered to Ultimate Air Ride in Prescott, AZ.
Suspension was the first to get swapped, and the Ultimate Air Ride crew went with a Dana 60 front axle and a Chevy 2500 HD rear axle. Then, they built the 18” suspension that uses front and rear four-links, along with a set of airbags that are controlled by an AccuAir management system. Once done, the team only had a month left before its scheduled debut at SEMA where it would represent Forgiato Wheels. Eden then picked up the H2 in Prescott and took it back to his shop in Midland to prep it for the finish work. This included the custom bumpers made by Fusion Bumpers. Then, everything was blown-apart to get either painted by Bustillo’s Auto Kolor or covered in Prismatic Powders by Hamer Custom Powder Coat. Afterward, ECD Customs wrapped the body in white vinyl with a fluorescent urban camo design to match Eden’s side-by-side vehicles.

The truck was assembled over a spare set of wheels and transported to Vegas for the big show. The plan was to take the new 42” Fury Offroad Country Hunter M/T tires and receive the 28x16 Forgiato Certo-T wheels in Vegas to swap everything out just before the show. Well, it all arrived on time, but the bolt pattern on the wheels didn’t match up with the lugs on the new axles. This is where things got interesting as a set of adapters were shipped last-minute and the wheels were installed just hours before the show started. Fortunately, it all worked out, and Eden now has a vehicle that can haul seven people and pull a heavy load whenever he wants. f you follow the lifted truck scene, then you already know that the name ECD is synonymous with some of the hottest builds. In the past four years, ECD has wrapped about 20-30 showworthy vehicles that have all been featured at SEMA, with a few also gracing the cover of this magazine. Owned by Eric Gosselin, ECD specializes in vehicle wrap designs and installation. Given he works on some of the best builds around, Eric is no stranger to his own SEMA-worthy vehicles (three in total). For the 2017 SEMA Show, Eric showcased his 2015 Silverado 2500HD named “Desert Max.” “The camouflage theme was an up-andcoming trend in the clothing industry, but then I saw a pair of Jordan 5 Retros accented with red. I knew at that point I wanted to mirror my truck after that design,” he explains. The vision was set in stone and Eric shipped his truck to his friends at Eighty80 in Bluffdale, Utah, for the build. While there, the Silverado was given a full makeover, complete with interior, suspension, audio, and the wrap in a matter of weeks. “TCS Suspension graciously overnighted us parts to help get this build finished in time,” Eric adds. The custom 4-link with 20” lift suspension was an intricate build complete with quite a few mods to get that perfect stance. TCS Suspension added coil over shock hoops, Fox 2.0 Steering Stabilizer shocks, laser cut ABS Tone Rings, Dynatrac FreeSpin kit with Warn hubs, Hellwig front sway bar and a bit more. A set of 28x16 American Force Alta wheels wrapped in Fury 42x15.50R28 tires completed the build.

In terms of looks, Eric needed to up the ante and bring his initial vision to life. A Roll n Lock tonneau cover gives the truck a standout look, while the real focal point is the ECD Matte Camo wrap installed by Chuck Courty. Plain An Simple by Design custom-painted headlights match the red wheels and interior, while OLB fog/under lights make it glow at night. Other exterior mods include AMP Research PowerSteps, a Boost Bars custom ECD grille, RECON tail/third brake lights, Klearz clear lenses and Hornblaster 244 Nightmare Edition. The Chevy needed to perform just as good as it looks, which is why Eric added a Bully Dog Air Intake, PPEI Tune and MBRP 5” stainless steel exhaust. Stopping power is provided by R1 Concepts rotors and pads.
The last-minute thrashing was well worth it since Desert Max was featured in the American Force booth at the 2017 SEMA Show. But SEMA wasn’t the last stop for Desert Max as it was campaigned all across North America, receiving many accolades. ECD has become so heavily involved in the aftermarket industry that Eric is in the midst of opening up a second location near Salt Lake City, Utah. “I love the Salt Lake area, and it puts me about five hours away from Las Vegas.” But don’t think that he’ll close his Ontario, Canada-based shop anytime soon! The expansion is great news for ECD as they look for an increased amount of representation throughout North America. EDWARD HO’S 2012 TOYOTA TUNDRA CREWMAX 4X4
T
he moment Edward Ho saw a few iconic Toyota Tundras dressed to the nines in the DUB Live! section at SEMA a few years ago, he was instantly hooked on the idea of building his own Tundra that would take home awards and garner attention like the ones he had seen. Despite starting out as his daily driver (with the occasional mountain trip to indulge in some snowboarding), Edward knew it was destined for so much more! But since the truck still needed to function as his primary vehicle, he needed to go with a look that suited hitting the show circuit on the weekends, but still wasn’t over-the-top flashy for his kids’ morning school drop-off line. “It basically has to be suitable for all my daily routines and weekend activities,” he admits. He initially chose the Tundra for its 4x4 capabilities to handle various terrains. Calling the build “Chase Truck Tundra,” Edward was inspired by the infamous King of the Hammers event, which he attended a few times. “I saw these well-equipped support vehicles for the race trucks, and loved all the gear, equipment and rugged capability on them. I worked closely with Evil Manufacturing in La Habra, CA, to get the right look and feel of the truck.”

The Avery Dennison Brushed Aluminum textured vinyl wrap makes the Tundra stand out from the rest, due to the fact that it’s never been seen on a truck before. “From far away, it looks like a matte gray, but close up, you can really see the texture,” he notes. “This definitely gave the truck a look that entertained spectators at events.” The initial design process took a while, but that was because Edward needed it to be different from all the amazing Tundra builds on the scene already. With the help of other vehicle customizers, he was able to come up with a look that was going to turn heads. “I got a lot of recommendations from members in
the Level 7 Truck Club and other Toyota Tundra groups. I kept wanting to change the look of it throughout the process, which was hard,” he notes, admitting that he had to stop looking for inspiration and just start building. But in the end, he chose products that could hold up against various conditions and terrains. Evil Manufacturing built a one-off chase rack that could hold two 37” tires and still have room for extra accessories. Edward also chose to have full-size spare tires mounted on the sides in order to keep the truck’s bed open for a Transfer Flow 40-gallon auxiliary fuel tank, a Viair air compressor tank and an auxiliary battery by Odyssey Battery.

As his first truck build (despite knowing his way around cars), Edward spent a lot of sleepless nights to finish it and made sure everything turned out as he first dreamed of. “I had this image of the truck, and it finally became a reality. But it didn’t happen overnight. It took a lot of time and commitments to make this build happen. It’s fun to drive, and to have at shows and events.” When it was finally unveiled, Edward received the same reactions he gave other builds of this stature and basked

in all the compliments and attention. “The best responses are when I’m at a stop light, and people give me the thumbs up, shouting, ‘Nice,’ or ‘Bad ass truck!’” As Edward thoroughly enjoys his Tundra, he’s already looking for inspiration for the next truck!

E
ntering the custom truck world isn’t something you do overnight. It usually takes several years to find your own style and figure out what kind of things you like. For a lot of us gear heads, we find out as a child that we are interested in custom vehicles, and it only gets worse as we get older. As a kid, Michael Garza from Knoxville, Tennessee, used to flip though all his brothers’ truck magazines and fell in love with custom trucks. Once he was old enough to get his own truck, he immediately started customizing it.
Fast forward about 20 years, he is now a project manager for a construction firm, so most of his time is tied up between work and family time. But he still manages to set time aside for his custom truck hobby and was actually able to turn it into a side job with his own shop, Xcalibur Motorsports. Now he’s able to work on his and other people’s trucks in his spare time. Having owned numerous trucks in his life, Michael has become drawn to Ford Super Dutys, and Excursions and has built and sold about a dozen of them throughout the years. His most
recent one is a 2017 Ford F-250 Super Duty Crew Cab 4x4. Knowing he had to go above and beyond his past builds to make this one stand out, he stepped up his game when he picked this one up from the dealership and began tearing it apart to debut it at SEMA 2017 in only five month’s time. In order to make this thing as tall as possible, he teamed up with Plan B and J-Fab to handle the custom 22” lift kit complete with FOA coilovers. Wicked Customs fabricated the custom mount of the Hornblasters horns stuffed under the rear of the bed as well. 71
Once all the components were test fitted and everyone was happy how it all fit, everything was torn back down to get the Prismatic Powders Illusion Orange sprayed on pretty much everything they could take off from under the truck. With the current trends, it’s a must to have the flashiest undercarriage possible, and with Michael’s love for the Tennessee Vols (his hometown college football team), the colors stood out for sure. A set of 24x14 Gear Forged F71 wheels were wrapped with 42x14.50R24 Interco Sniper tires to plant all that suspension work firmly on the ground. With the stance and height established on this beast, it was time to make the body just as flashy. To do this, Michael added a fiberglass RK Sport hood, a custom Royalty Core grille, as well as front and rear Fusion Bumpers. Rigid Industries LED lights are tucked in all the bumper holes to provide extra illumination while the Infinite Rule Security lock pins keep the Monster Hooks secure to the bumpers. The headlights were blown apart for some color-matched paint and Klearz Manufacturing lenses. Billy Robertson at Assassin Motorsports in Louisville, TN, handled all the paint work to tie it all together. To cover the bed and keep the 40-gallon Transfer Flow auxiliary fuel tank out of the elements, Michael added an Undercover Bed Cover. To continue the theme in the interior, black and orange Roadwire Leather was installed. Precision Window Tint Seats N Stuff handled the custom sub box that houses four 8” subs and audio install with a slew of Kicker Audio equipment all powered by a couple XS Power batteries. A Lock’Er Down console safe and Husky Liner floor mats also completes the interior modifications. Under the hood, Michael added an EZ Lynk Programmer PPEI custom programming and a billet lifetime oil filter by Hobb Filters. Gasses also now exit through the 5” JAMO Performance exhaust. With this truck done, debuted at SEMA and now in a magazine, we guess you could say that Michael finally reached his goals on the build. Now we can sit back and watch to see what Michael and Xcalibur Motorsports come out with next. 72

uilding a truck that stands out from the crowd takes a bit of creativity and imagination. Many people copy styles from others, and the results are never groundbreaking. One thing we’ve learned is that originality is a big factor in the impact that your ride has on others. However, doing so in a tasteful fashion is also a must. Having an imagination like no other, Chad “Cantcolor” Carothers is a person that is always finding new ways to express his visions. Leaving the East Coast after high school, he landed in SoCal in pursuit of his art. Chad’s style quickly gained a huge following through action sports, fashion and custom-painted footwear. While the demand for his custom kicks has recently grown to consume a large portion of his career, his need to create continues to grow, spawning ideas for badass rides that transpire into reality.

Chad has owned many different custom vehicles ranging from race-inspired BMWs to classic American iron. Lately, trucks have been the popular subject matter as he previously finished a supercharged ’14 Silverado that was lowered on a custom coilover suspension with 26” billet wheels. After completing this sportminded pickup, Chad decided to build a similar truck with a twist. This time around it would be a lifted version of the truck, which would make him feel like he was riding a great white shark through the sea of cars on the road. Dubbed Sharknado, the project started when Chad purchased this ’17 Silverado 1500 Z71 4x4 from a local dealership. He wasted no time in customizing it and immediately tore apart the interior, which would later receive some of his unique artwork. In the meantime, the 24x12 one-off KMC XD forged monoblock wheels were formed and became a big part of the build. 78

Just look closely at the photos to notice that these brushed wheels were then handpainted before getting powder coated in candy red by the team at New Year Metal Finishing in Santa Ana, CA. They are also wrapped in Atturo Trail Blade XT urban all-terrain tires that were laser etched with matching design on the sidewalls. Allowing these new rollers to fit, the truck was made taller with a custom lift that utilizes Rough Country parts and Fox 2.5 remote reservoir coilover shocks, most of which were hand-painted as well.
Adding performance to combat the slowing effects of the large tires, the engine was boosted with an Edelbrock E-Force supercharger and K&N Blackhawk intake. Next, the exterior was covered in a flat white wrap before the bed was coated in a red bedliner that now features his custom art and aluminum center strips. Finishing things off, many pieces of the interior were painted red or white with matching artwork. The seats were reupholstered in Roadwire leather covers to continue the red theme. The focal point of the interior is the headliner, which was covered in a white canvas and showcases a complete mural of Chad’s art. The end result is an urban beast that’s a true rolling masterpiece unlike any other.

W
ith more than 5,000 spectators and over 800 vehicles, Texas Hold ’Em has become one of the largest shows in Texas in only their second year. The Pasadena Fairgrounds located in Pasadena, Texas, was filled with not only cars, trucks and utility vehicles, it was also ravished by cold temperature, wind and mud. However, the inclement obstacles didn’t halt the enthusiasm and support from car and truck clubs throughout the Lone Star state. Jose Rubio, the show promoter and member of Team Billet wants to thank everyone that came out to show their support and enjoy the weekend and also sends a special thanks to Karlos Cruz, Joey Coomer, Luis Villareal and Fabian Villareal for all their help and support. With events like Beer Chug, Car and Truck burnout contest, live music throughout the day and a bikini contest, Texas Hold ’Em has set itself up as one of the best shows of the year! With American Force Wheels as the lead sponsor and showcasing their latest products inside the arena, it allowed the spectators to escape the cold weather and see their vehicles up close and also check out their latest offerings. The device is a wearable smartphone with a 4” 960x192 screen that’s enclosed in a metal band you wear on your wrist. The 500mAH battery doesn’t take long to charge, while the built-in heart rate monitor comes in handy when you’re exercising.
