EDITOR’S NOTES
W
hether customizing is a hobby or your profession, the name of the game is all about being as creative as possible to make your project get noticed regardless if it’s at a show, on the road or the trails. For this Issue, we’ve gathered a few of the most creative builds we’ve seen to not only inspire you, but also show you what’s possible with some hard work and perseverance. Uprooted is a modern Silverado that takes on traditional form. Building a new model truck isn’t an easy task given the amount of unknowns and the limitations aftermarket parts. Although not a dealbreaker, a build of this caliber does take some skill and finesse. Denver Carter knew what he was getting into with his 2019 Chevy Silverado High Country and turned his rig into a head turning truck that commands a double take.
ISSUE 22
The Nissan Titan XD doesn’t usually come to mind when customizing a truck. But just because they’re rare doesn’t mean they’re not an optimal base vehicle. Jarrod Muck of Cali Customs in Oklahoma knows the importance of great builds and wanted to fabricate something that was both different and could speak volumes of the shop’s work.
is a tribute to their very first show truck that sparked their love for customizing.
Fab Four’s Daylighter was meant to be a true off-road rig with some extra flair. With the only job to perform big on the trails, the crew over at Fab Fours made sure to build a functional offroad machine with some added good looks.
ToBig4U is literally on the extreme side of the spectrum and resembles a monster truck more than a show rig. But regardless of its boldness, the 3rd gen Toyota 4Runner is something that demands stares whether on the road or at events with his massiveness!
Complete Customs has built more than 70 different SEMA projects and for 2018 they wanted something special to celebrate 10 years at the biggest automotive aftermarket show on the planet. Their 10th SEMA Anniversary Tundra
Lacey Blair’s #Ruined is a big middle finger to those who think customizing ruins a vehicle. Her Cadillac Escalade ESV is anything but ruined and is one of the hottest luxury SUVs we’ve laid eyes on!
We were also on hand at two great enthusiast events and have some inspirational photos on two of the scene’s hottest shows - New Jersey Jeep Invasion and the Daytona Truck Meet!

THE NEW YOKOHAMA GEOLANDAR X-AT
W
e were recently invited on an exclusive driving experience with the new Yokohama Geolandar X-AT, which is the seventh model in the Geolandar family of adventure tires making it one of the most diverse lineups in the industry. It’s also the third in the Geolandar X-series line of “in-between” and “extreme” offerings, according to Fardad Niknam, Yokohama’s Senior Director of Marketing and Planning. The other two are the X-CV for luxury sport crossovers and their flagship off-road, rockcrawling X-MT mud terrain. A quick, but focused, product briefing with Mr. Niknam prior to the ride-and-drive delivered on four main aspects of the X-AT: DURABILITY thanks to improved puncture resistance because of GEO-SHIELD technology. The tire features multiple sidewall piles, a high turn-up carcass and a full nylon cap while being lighter than some competitors. LONG TREAD LIFE is a lock with Yokohama’s new high-density HD2 compound. It’s made of a special triple-polymer blend engineered for reliable long tread life and impressive cutand chip-resistance. An elliptical contact area provides balanced performance of off-road traction with long even wear. The X-AT is backed by a 45,000-mile limited treadwear warranty and their 30-day money back guarantee.
32
A QUIET, comfortable ride is guaranteed due to the zig-zag grooves that interrupt airflow to limit unwanted sound. Additionally, the tread features are staggered in a five block sequence that add to the reduction in pattern and road noise. GRIPPING OFF-ROAD TRACTION is achieved by aggressive, large shoulder blocks that are varied in length to create a biting edge and promote mud- and stone-ejection. Also, the angular offset center block clusters provide extra strength and
grip. Sipes and narrow grooves are combined on each tread block to provide traction on wet, snow and slick rock surfaces. The X-AT will also include load-range F-sizes for heaving carry capacities, plus a dual sidewall (named Mesa and Summit ) design, giving owners the option of picking a look to match their vehicle. With an initial 27 size offerings – from 15” to 22” diameters and up to 37” tall, the X-AT will be available starting July 1st.
The varying terrain in the Mojave Desert (just south of Las Vegas) was our test track, and who better to trail boss the course other than the owner of The Mint 400, Matt Martelli. Matt lead our caravan of Ford Raptors and a Jeep JL south of the city where we were able to sample the X-ATs on-road manners. Quiet is an understatement, granted the tires were new and we were in a new Ford Raptor. Nothing scientific was done to audibly test road noise other than shutting off the radio, and eventually lowering the windows to see if we could detect anything. The subtle notes from the exhaust drowned out anything we could hear from the tires - they were that quiet.
After about 10 miles, we made it off-pavement to test its capabilities through varying terrain of fire roads, rocky washes, sand and silt as well as through slow and technical portions of the The Mint 400 course, where the X-ATs footing would be challenged. Midway through the drive, we were lucky enough to do a few high-speed passes through an empty Jean Dry Lake bed. Unsurprisingly, the X-ATs performed as expected and traction was never in question and inspired confidence through sketchy situations. As consumer demand continues to grow for an off-road tire that performs better than an allterrain, and almost as good as mud-terrain, the Geolandar X-AT fulfills that void. The extreme all-terrain tire redefines the term rugged, offering pickup trucks, Jeeps, and SUV owners a tire with excellent off-road performance that doesn’t sacrifice on-road comfort, making it a great performance upgrade for dual purpose daily work and weekend adventure rigs.

OUR IDEA OF A SHOW TRUCK AND SEMA BUILD IS WHAT YOU WOULD TYPICALLY SEE WITH THE CUSTOM CROWD – DETAILS GALORE AND ABSURD ATTENTION TO EVEN THE SMALLEST THINGS.”
A
s owner of Cali Customs in Oklahoma, Jarrod Muck knows the importance of great builds. Not only do they show off the skills and talents of your team, but they also help carve out a name for yourself within the industry. To show what his crew at Cali Customs was capable of, Jarrod was on a mission to fabricate something that spoke volumes of the kind of hard work that his team prides themselves on. “Our main goal was to build a truly detailed truck, from top to bottom, which was different on every level than what’s currently seen on most lifted trucks,” he describes. “We didn’t want to create some stock frame that’s full of holes and was just powder coated to look nice. Our idea of a show truck and SEMA build is what you would typically see with the custom crowd – details galore and absurd attention to even the smallest things.”
37
While the project didn’t come to fruition until recently, it really started as a conversation between Jarrod and one of his good friends, Jimbo Taylor. When they found the right time to do it, they both agreed to go all in and finally made good on that promise in 2017. Because everyone was already building Fords, Chevys and Ram trucks, Jarrod decided to go a different route to achieve his goal of standing out among a sea of other custom trucks when he would showcase the rig at SEMA. The Titan XD was the perfect blank canvas to achieve this goal and Jimbo pulled the trigger on the purchase. Although the truck needed to be strictly for show, it also needed to be 100% driveable, so all of its mods and parts needed to look good and function. 38
39
“At the time, you didn’t see many trucks with a copper suspension, and the factory Nissan Blue was so beautiful to begin with, we saved quite a bit of time avoiding a total repaint,” Jarrod admits about the start of the build. Once the color scheme was set, it was time to sit down with Robbie at Keg Media to get the ball rolling on the rest of the work. “The final product was about 98% the same to the initial rendering, aside from the drop cradle,” he mentions. “We knew what products to use based on the current popular trends and what we sell on a daily basis at our shop.”
With everything in motion, Jarrod started with the suspension first, given it’s one of the highlights for the Titan. “My right hand man Brad Gaines came up with the suspension design and made it all happen.” Using Currie Johnny joints and 1-1/4 QA1 heims on all steering components and track bars, Brad created a set up that could take a beating off-road (of course, if you weren’t worried about the intensive paint work, Jarrod adds). While working on the suspension Brad filled in 116 holes while also adding a custom transmission mount and two other custom crossmembers for added rigidity. Then, it’s all 40
suspended using Fox Racing 2.5 coilovers and 2.5 triple bypasses at all four corners. According to Jarrod, other notable frame mods include the train horn mount for the eight Hornblaster horns that are neatly hidden (including all the mounting hardware and air lines, with the twin ARB compressors hidden between the cab and bed). Once the welding was done, the cab and drivetrain were then removed before heading off to get the body worked on, smoothed and painted (along with the F-250 front end and rear axles).

The Nissan features eighty-six rock lights underneath it and in the grille to highlight all the beautiful fabrication and paint. “We spent an absurd amount of time planning the location of the lights and wiring to make it all tie into the factory harness for an incredibly clean install. “We also had custom limit straps made with pockets sewn into them to hide the ABS wires and brake lines.” While the outside is stunning, the interior was crafted with the same amount of detail and attention. Sadly, it often gets overlooked, but Jarrod still gets excited talking about the interior details. “We stripped the cab down to nothing, but a dash!” he exclaims. “We then added Stinger sound damping to the floor, roof and doors and got to work creating something one-of-a-kind. A Rockford Fosgate audio system makes the Titan boom with bass, while a custom enclosure matches the black leather and blue Katzkin suede of the seats. Blue accent lighting sets the mood inside and even the steering wheel, door panel armrest and center console were all re-stitched with matching copper thread from Katzkin for a unifying look.” When the build was done, Jarrod was incredibly proud of his team and their effort to really give their all to build this caliber of truck. “It was everything we hoped it would be and was such
a fun truck to drive.” Although responses of the build varied, the most asked question was about why a Titan as the base vehicle. Jarrod’s common response was simply, “To be different.” But the rig was a crowd pleaser overall, and the blue and copper color combo was a hit. “Everyone definitely appreciated the level of detail put into it,” Jarrod says. The truck was taken to local shows before it was sold at Barrett Jackson, with all of its profits donated to Camp Kanakuk by owner Jimbo Taylor.

2015 CADILLAC ESCALADE ESV WORDS | PHOTOS: PHIL GORDON

R
uined is usually a term that people utter when they don’t understand the custom truck scene. It’s often considered “ruined” when you modify a vehicle from stock to achieve a custom look. But when you’re customizing your vehicle to make it more personal and appealing to your own preferences, it’s anything but ruined. Being a woman in the truck scene isn’t easy. “It takes a lot to be taken seriously when you’re a girl,” Lacey Blair describes. “It’s almost like I have to work twice as hard for that respect.” But working hard is something Lacey has done her whole life, owning both Town & Country Salon and LB Motorsports in Potosi, Missouri. As an entrepreneur, Lacey strives every day to elevate her brand and make the right money moves. One of the companies that Lacey works for is Monat Global (a premium hair product line), and after hitting a certain mark in the company, you’re offered a very specific vehicle - a white Cadillac. They usually push you to get a sedan, but Lacey has always been more of a truck girl. She wanted the perfect SUV, and the largest vehicle that Cadillac makes, so she found a 2015 Cadillac Escalade ESV at an Iowa dealership and made all the arrangements to bring it home. “I remember the first night I had the Escalade. I did a burnout leaving the dealership.”
45
Things got a bit more intense in the following weeks and months, with Lacey completely focused on the build. She began ordering parts and the waiting game began for everything to come in. While she was waiting, she decided to add her company logo on the Cadillac, as Vinyl Images in St. Louis dressed the Caddy with her LB logo in light purple and chrome. The next step was the custom grille that was handcrafted by Boost Bars and installed by Richard Lee at Breton Creek Customs. The Cadillac was put on jack stands and the factory undercoating was stripped and re-painted black by Richard Lee, JC Hires and Lacey.
46
47
A 15” Full Throttle Suspension lift was delivered next, and Zach Pennock used his expertise to powder coat the entire lift and suspension components in Prismatic Powders Misty Lilac. Kannan’s Auto Body painted the axles and suspension overlays in Pearl White. Once Richard Lee, Don Wimberly, Zach Pennock and JC Hires installed the lift on the Escalade, bringing the SUV sky high for Lacey, Amp Research steps were mounted so she could get in and out of the truck. A spare tire delete plate was custom cut by Denver Counts at DSP Motorsports, and Zach added the powdercoating to blend into the undercarriage color. Heartland Fab welded traction bars to prevent axle wrap and wheel hop. Under the hood, Lacey wanted the lifted Cadillac to have some muscle. Even though the Escalade comes with a powerful 6.2L V8, she wanted more. And what Lacey wants, she makes sure she gets. A 2.3 Whipple Supercharger kit was ordered and given the Misty Lilac powder coating treatment and installed by Don Wimberly, along with a Gibson Performance exhaust and Speed Engineering long tube headers. As one of her many hats, Lacey does work for Hostile Wheels at numerous events throughout the country, so when it came time to outfit her new “ruined” Cadillac, it made sense to pick out the wheels that she always wanted. A set of 26” Hostile Punishers wrapped in 44” Interco Boggers were mounted by Richard Lee and Don Wimberly. Thanks to her hard work, she’s now driving around in her dream ride, dressed to impressed!

A MODERN 2019 SILVERADO THAT TAKES ON TRADITIONAL FORM
T
imes are definitely changing and the truck scene is no different. Back in the day, lifting a truck took more work than it usually does today. Going to extreme heights was not an easy task and required expert fabrication. In the last decade, we have witnessed an increase in offerings from many suspension companies that remove any complications to creating a big truck. Though these kits help many people achieve their goals, they aren’t the best solution, as both form and capabilities can be compromised as a result. Taking things back to the roots of four wheelin’ is Denver Carter’s ’19 Chevy Silverado High Country. Chevrolet claims that this is their most advanced truck to date, but Denver thought there was room for improvement. Tearing into a new truck is not something to take lightly, and Denver had confidence in his shop’s team at Truks N’ Stuff of LaGrange, GA. When approached by Hammerhead Armor about building a ’19 Silverado for the upcoming SEMA Show, Denver decided that this was an opportunity to not pass up and purchased the 4x4 to make it all happen.
53
It may be a cliché, but creating this truck before the ’18 SEMA Show was a large undertaking. Building a beast from the latest model meant that there were many unknowns that needed to be handled in a short amount of time despite the desire to have a completed ’19 Chevy unlike any other - but it was worth it in the end. Denver got the truck a mere 40 days before the show and made a few calls to all the big name suspension companies and quickly found that there were no parts available yet, as they were all in development stages on them.
Since Denver’s team consists of true enthusiasts that are experienced in fabricating off-road suspension, he decided to take the plunge by creating a fully custom system for this truck. Getting the jump on the build, Denver picked up a set of 1-ton axles from a 2006 Ford Super Duty to improve the truck’s functions. From there, the team used DOM tubing and joints from RuffStuff Specialties to create the front and rear four-link systems that utilize a set of F-O-A coil-over shocks. To make the front straight axle swap work, a hydraulic power steering pump and gear box from a ’08 Chevy HD were retrofitted. Converting the steering system threw off the factory ECU, which had to be reconfigured in order to get the truck out of its safety mode. 54
Conveniently secure all of your locks with just one key, your ignition key!
AS EASY AS IGNITION KEY
55
With the truck up and functioning again, it was now time to improve on the styling. The first thing on the list were the 26x16 TIS Forged 544 BM wheels that are wrapped in 42” Fury Offroad M/T tires. The Silverado was then beefed up with a set of bumpers from Hammerhead Armor and a grille from Boost-Bars. The finishing touch was the t flat gray vinyl by S4L Wraps. Though it was a struggle to make this truck happen, it made it to the show and in grand fashion. Denver and his team not only completed a build with Chevy’s latest pickup, they created a unique ride that will be remembered for its originality and stance that pays homage to traditional off-road trucks.

COMPLETE CUSTOMS 10TH ANNIVERSARY TOYOTA TUNDRA WORDS: KRISTIE REAL | PHOTOS: DALE MARTIN
58
I
n 2018, Complete Customs celebrated their 10th year representing at SEMA, with a special edition Toyota Tundra to mark the momentous occasion (despite having more than 70 different customs debut at the show throughout the years). In 2008, owner Shaun Freilich, was attending college in Odessa, TX, and had been working with a local shop. They had done a few small projects for him in 2008 and with the release of the new Toyota Tundra, the shop owner asked Shaun if he wanted to build one for SEMA. “This was my first introduction to the show,” Shaun admits. From there, he learned the ins and outs of building a show-worthy vehicle, including reaching out to several companies to sponsor the build. His first call was to Roland Trudell, founder of RBP, who took Shaun under his wing
and played a significant part in getting the Tundra going. The second call was to Thomas Fitcher of N-Fab, who also guided him in the right direction. Learning from two heavy-hitters in the industry fueled Shaun’s customizing addiction and the rest is history. Once everything was complete, he made sure to personally track down both men to thank them for everything they had done for him throughout the process. Over the next few years, he kept in touch with both, and their inspiration was one of the driving forces behind Shaun’s decision to open his own custom shop in 2011. In the past seven years, Complete Customs has had a strong presence at the largest automotive aftermarket show in the world, which has helped put the shop on the customizing map.
59
So when planning began for the 2018 show, he knew he needed to build a 2018 Tundra as a reminder of how far he had come over the last 10 years. “Once I started the design phase of the build, I knew I had to work with all the same companies that I worked with 10 years ago,” he explains. “I got in contact with RBP, Bulletproof Suspension, KC HiLites, Nitto and a few others and was blown away how everyone quickly responded yes!” To give the build a fresh look, Shaun also reached out to a few top brands like Alea Leather, Linkswell, Retrax, Yakima, AMP Research and more.
60
61
Once he got the concept locked in with Innov8 Design Lab, he pledged to go above and beyond to really make the 10th Anniversary memorable. The original Tundra from 2008 had a matching speed boat, so Shaun needed to top that. His good friend Rob Wallach (owner of Excessive Carts in Prosper, TX) had been wanting to collaborate with him on a golf cart build, so Shaun thought it was time to follow through. “We both knew we wanted a custom lifted suspension, so I quickly involved another good friend of mine Chris Moos, the owner of Mooscraft. They built the air ride suspension using parts from Air Lift Performance.” Once the suspension on the golf cart was done, it was returned to Excessive Carts, where their team worked three days straight to complete the golf cart in time for its grand debut. For the Toyota, they went old school and opted to use the original white with blue accents. While the first rendering did have blue graphics on it, Shaun later decided to remove the graphics for a simple and clean look that Complete Customs is known for. To give the Tundra a noticeable stance, Shaun was able to use the first Bulletproof rear cantilever suspension for a Tundra that’s perfect for daily driving while still being a head turner at shows. Because Complete Customs are pros when it comes to SEMA builds, they were able to complete the Tundra in just three weeks – with a lot of late nights, though. “I’m thankful to have an amazing team!” Unlike other builds that always have something go wrong right before the big debut, Shaun was also lucky enough to have everything run pretty smoothly during those three weeks, as if the customizing gods approved of his 10th SEMA Anniversary Tundra! The finished duo has been a huge hit with the public. “The Tundra is obviously a head turner, but when I have the Tundra and the golf cart together, the public goes crazy!” Shaun details. “I couldn’t be happier with the final product and everything turned out just as planned.” Now, Shaun uses the Tundra and golf cart for marketing purposes and then he’ll soon be changing up the Tundra once more for the 2019 SEMA Show.

ETHAN MULLANI AND CREW BUILT THE WORLD’S “LARGEST” TOYOTA 4RUNNER WORDS: EDDIE MALONEY | PHOTOS: DALE MARTIN
W
e’ve seen lots of extreme builds over the years, but “wow” is the one word that comes to mind when we saw Ethan Mullani’s 1996 Toyota 4Runner. Done by Allout Offroad, a build of this magnitude was not going to be easy. That’s why Ethan, who hails from Richmond, Texas, made sure to mention that the Toyota was, “built, and not bought.” One of the challenges when trying to accomplish a project of this magnitude is the lack of parts. “They didn’t make parts for what we were trying to do,” he describes. “Thus, we had to spend thousands of hours brainstorming and fabricating to make sure this thing would work!” But it was all about the truck, first and foremost, and many hands came together to make the magic happen. Arguably, the most difficult part of the build was the frame and suspension fabrication. Most lifted builds do away with the 4-wheel drive system, but not TOBIG4U. Ethan insisted it remained working, which only complicated matters more. With precise measurements and tolerances only seen on aircraft, a 42-degree angled front drive shaft was created to keep the integrity of the truck’s front wheel drive system in working order.
66

Because of the caliber of the project, this wasn’t something that was done in a few months. It actually took a little over two years to complete, with countless man hours, time and patience. Given how labor intensive this build was, there was no doubt that it was going to be showcased at the biggest automotive aftermarket show in the world - SEMA! And you couldn’t miss it as it was front and center at the American Force Wheels booth. Or, you might have been one of many who actually mistook it for a bonafide monster truck. Ethan has had many builds under his belt, but none as challenging or as memorable as this one. “It takes a team to build something on this scale of detail. Thanks to my friends and sponsors for making the ‘World’s largest 4Runner possible.’” When they said it couldn’t be done, Ethan and his team made it happen. We are pretty convinced Ethan and co. have something even crazier up their sleeves for their next project! 68

2017 FORD F-350 SINGLE CAB WORDS: KRISTIE REAL | PHOTOS: DALE MARTIN

WE LOVE WHEELING, NORMALLY IN JEEPS AND BUGGIES, BUT DOING IT IN A SINGLE CAB 1-TON WOULD BE A CROWD PLEASER!”
S
ometimes you just want a real off-road rig and something that’ll perform up to your standards on the trails. Fab Fours CEO Greg Higgs is known for creating some of the most extreme and aggressive show rigs, but as an avid off-road enthusiast, he’s also big on building functional off-road machines. For DayLighter, the Ford’s only duty was to handle the trails like a boss. “We wanted a rig to off-road,” he details. “We knew that 44” boggers on homemade bead-locks was not a formula for a smooth commuter... but we have never been into the show truck game, either. We love wheeling, normally in Jeeps and buggies, but doing it in a single cab 1-ton would be a crowd pleaser!”
73
From the beginning they imagined an early ’90s-inspired lifted truck, so the vision started with a row of iconic KC HiLiTES lights across the top, thus the name DayLighter was born. While some of their builds are meant to unleash the haters of the Internet, DayLighter was not intended for this. “This was a man’s truck, so we went murdered-out for the exterior,” Greg admits. “We knew the truck would get our GRUMPER and VI-Cowl setup. And for the single-cab body, we figured the Ford was the best looking! She was bought from the dealer new just for this build.” 74
75
Working with their vast network of manufacturers, Greg and his team went to work on creating the ultimate man’s truck. As Fab Four’s first “stacked” truck, they stacked the suspension with their “no lift 40’” system in order to fit the massive tires with a relatively low height. “For 44s, she’s still very low,” he details. “Nobody can look at the Ford without smiling – nobody.” While much of the build was seamless, they did run into a bit of trouble adding the front locker and fabricated sliders. But since the rest was bolt-on Fab Fours products, they were able to knock it out in just a few days. As their Easter Jeep Safari crunch build, they had their hands full trying to get it ready to go out and play with the other full-size trucks that crash the Jeep event. Considered one of their best builds, Greg admits that the Ford does well for what it is when it comes to actually wheeling. “But we prefer tackling nasty hard trails, so it ended up in between.” The team actually needed to bend the front housing given the extremely heavy wheel and tire combo with the crazy wheel offset, which was annoying, according to Greg. “We had to straighten the axle then gusset it all up.” Although Greg loved how DayLighter turned out, they had to flip it to breathe life into another rig, but it’s still a favorite for the team.

DANESON FLAVORED TOOTHPICKS DANESON.COM
When it comes to toothpicks, flavor isn’t something you associate with them. But some people actually have a fixation with toothpicks, using them to kick smoking or have some type of oral fixation and need to gnaw on something. That’s where Daneson Flavored Toothpicks come in handy. Made from Northern White Birch, these toothpicks feature flavoring blends that are made using natural extracts and essential oils. You can choose from a two-pack that features spicy Cinna Mint that’s a bit sweet and has a touch of peppermint notes with honeysuckle thrown in, and Mint. No.9 that has a fun and fresh blend of mint varieties. There’s even an option for a two-pack with an alcohol twist! And with every tree that’s made into toothpicks, they’ll plant one hundred trees in its place. $14.00+

Charging the battery pack only takes six hours via a standard outlet and all speed and battery info is displayed on a digital dash. Other features include disc brakes for stopping power, an adjustable suspension for a smooth ride and racks to carry loads up to 365lbs. $7,500

EARTH TRAVELER TEARDROP TRAILERS EARTHTRAVLERTEARDROPTRAILERS.COM
Earth Traveler Teardrop trailers are different and better at the same time. Different because they’re hand-built and custom-made using sustainable and more affordable materials and better because they’re super lightweight. The company offers its T300 teardrop trailer and its more expensive than the carbon fiber-based T250LX (which has a pop-up roof on the front and pop-out walls on the sides), but both feature tons of desirable amenities. The T300 is about 300 pounds, while the T250LX is about 250 lbs., which makes them light enough to even be pulled by electric cars, some electric bikes and other eco-friendly rides! $7,500+
