EDITOR’S NOTES

B

igger, better and bolder are words customizers constantly use to describe their latest builds. And, boy, do we have tons of rigs that live up to those words in this latest issue. At this time last year, the new Jeep JL was the vehicle to build for SEMA. With high demand for aftermarket parts but with low supply, builders were in a pinch and had to call in favors to jump ahead of the line, fabricate their own parts or to even secure prototypes for use on their JLs. Fortunately, two builds from opposite ends of the build spectrum caught our eye, and we were able to feature the creations of Matt Hwang and Joey Maximus. Matt wanted to incorporate all of his hobbies into one build and wanted to challenge himself at the

ISSUE 23

same time. He took inspiration from a previous build we featured and decided on a functional, daily driven approach to create what he calls The Buckshot. Joey of Maximum Altitude in San Antonio is an industry vet and it shows in his over-the-top JL build which he calls The Beast! While JLs were the new kid on the block at the show, Chad Bowman put everything on the line to create a Jeep JKU that lived up to his high expectations. His All In Jeep is at the pinnacle of custom-show Jeeps and is a must see to believe. Imagination is everything in the customizing world and Randall Robertson of Rtech Fabrications used every ounce of imagination he had to bring his vintage vision to life. The Ponderosa Chevy Crew Cab Dually is a truck with a little bit of this and a little bit of that, with old

school looks and modern appeal. It’s truly one of a kind. Extreme Off-Road out of Katy, Texas, is an industry leader when it comes to putting together big badass trucks which is why their services have been in heavy demand. They now have a facility that rivals fancy dealerships and the shop’s Project Supreme Extreme is the perfect marketing tool for their new flagship facility. We also have coverage of some of the summer’s hottest shows - NJ Truck Invasion and the always popular Texas Heatwave which celebrated 30 years. So the next time you’re looking to go bigger, better and bolder, make sure to use these builds as inspiration!

@LFTDXLVLD

Renderings play an important role in vehicle builds and serve as the blueprint in creating one’s masterpiece. They were once simple mock ups in the past, but they’ve now evolved into exact renditions of what the final product will be. Check out a few of these badass renderings we found for SEMA 2019 and give them a follow. We’ll then post the completed builds in the next issue!

SKYJACKER 2.5”, 3.5”, AND 4.5” SUSPENSION SYSTEMS FOR THE 2020 JEEP GLADIATOR 318.388.0816 | SKYJACKER.COM |

/SKYJACKERSUSPENSIONS |

@SKYJACKER

Skyjacker Suspensions has released its new suspension family for the 2020 Jeep Gladiator Truck. Skyjacker now has 2.5”, 3.5”, and 4.5” full suspension systems for all 3 available lift heights. These suspension systems are equipped with our Dual Rate-Long Travel coil springs. The Dual Rate-Long Travel coils are both Dual Rate & Long Travel in 1 unique coil spring design. The Dual Rate allows for an exceptional highway ride as the coils travel in the 1st lighter spring rate during light suspension movement while the 2nd higher rate only engages during coil compression for consistent control & stability during heavy off-road suspension movement. Long Travel allows the top stack of the coils to expand as the terrain changes. This allows for maximum suspension droop which keeps the tires in contact with the ground much longer and keeps the coil springs from being displaced from their upper coil bucket. 24

tanding tall, like no other, this Jeep JKU is in a league of its own. Though we’ve featured many customized Jeeps, this particular one really stands out from the rest. At a quick glance, anyone can see that this is not your average lifted vehicle. The details, both inside and out, are quite unique, really setting off the JK.

point, Chad decided he needed to go bigger than the last time. Though he was successful, he really wanted to make a name for himself by going “all in.” Going further than he’d ever gone before, the next build would be on a level of its own.

So how does a vehicle like this come to fruition? Well, it all started a few years back when Chad Bowman decided to have a little fun with a Toyota Tundra. After posting about the truck on Instagram, Shaun Lewis of SR Designs hit him up about finishing it and offered him a spot in the Bully Dog booth at the upcoming SEMA Show. After finishing the Tundra as planned, Chad made good on the deal and solidified himself as a builder. Getting bit with the customizing bug during his first time around, Chad was hooked on creating badass vehicles that get noticed. From that

39

Chad set his sights on a 2017 Jeep and walked into a local dealership to pick up a basic version. Since he was going to completely tear into it, the only options he was interested in were door locks and power windows. When asked about warranties, Chad said he wouldn’t need any as nothing was going to be left untouched. Building a vehicle like this Jeep JKU involves a bit of risk, especially for Chad as he took a perfectly good vehicle and completely disassembled it. 40

It was a calculated risk as he knew some talented people from a few shops that could handle the tall order. JP Auto Styles was the first stop for Chad where the interior and audio system were done up. The plan was to take care of the inside first as it would be more difficult to do after the Jeep was lifted. With the interior gutted at JP Auto Styles, all the panels were smoothed and painted white by Wrap It Up Hydrographics. A Smittybilt SRC cage was added that was also hydrodipped by Wrap It Up Hydrographics along with a few other key pieces as well. JP then added an iPad on the dash, made a huge overhead sound bar and a rear stereo box to house the Audio Legion USA speakers and amps. Topping it off, All-Kine Upholstery wrapped the seats in leather to match the purple and white theme.

With the interior complete, Chad drove the Jeep to Resurrected Fab for a full custom 20” suspension lift. The factory axles were ditched for bigger ones from a 2006 Ford F-250. They were then stiffened up with custom trusses that match with the All In theme. Holding the axles in place is a set of custom traction bars that are mounted to a cradle in the center. Fox 2.5 coilover shocks with remote reservoirs keep the ride smooth, while a set of sway bars keep the Jeep level when it goes around curves. Again, nothing was left untouched as the frame was painted and all the suspension pieces were powder coated by Unforgettable Customs. Setting it all off is the ginormous 28” Rolling Big Power (RBP) Horizon wheels with 44” Tri Ace tires.

42

43

The final segment was the exterior, which has been dramatically changed from its original state. Starting with the fenders, the stock versions were removed in lieu of a set from Fab Fours, along with door skins, mirror guards and a ViCowl windshield protector. Then, the inner fenders received covers from Skull Krushers for extra style. New beefier bumpers from CrawlTek were added and were dressed with hooks from Royal Hooks. A more pronounced hood from DV8 Offroad replaced the plain factory version. Then, a roof rack from Razerrack was attached with lighting from Twisted Pro. The finishing touches include custom exhaust tips by AOW Welding, an Oracle Vector grille and RBP steps. This Jeep was a huge undertaking and took well over a year to complete. It was a tight race to get it to the 2018 SEMA Show but with a lot of help, Chad was able to make the deadline. He took a gamble on this Jeep JKU and it paid off as he had the tallest and sickest one at the show. With that being said, it was all worth it, even with the many struggles Chad endured along the way. 44

hen you’re promoting your new facility, you’re going to need something bold, big and badass to get people’s attention. Jordan O’Krinsky of Extreme Offroad & Performance wanted something to serve as a rolling billboard for the shop, while still functioning as a daily driver. Together with his brother, Austin, and his dad, Michael, as well as his shop team, Project Supreme Extreme was manifested. “I wanted something that was extraordinary that caught people’s attention,” Jordan admits. The theme for the build was based off the SUPREME clothing brand. Like the brand, Extreme has blown up in the customization world in a short period of time with today’s generation, according to Jordan. Thus a vibrant red and white color scheme was chosen and a Ford F-250 Lariat Edition was the perfect foundation. While some would have preferred a Platinum or King Ranch, Jordan knew the price tag only reflected some added badging that wouldn’t really add to the truck’s overall transformation. “I wanted those extra funds in order to achieve the minor

details that a lot of builders fail to do and skip because of the added costs! I chose not to skip on these core details in order to stand above the rest in my industry! To choose to take risks in a build with such elaborate and bright colors is something people tend to stay away from, but for me I chose to take that risk and it surpassed my expectations completely.” When choosing the right products for the build, Jordan decided to completely change it up on how they themed their past projects and came up with an entirely new style that they hadn’t done before. “From the already great companies I have worked with in the past, to the new ones I had my sights on, I wanted something special and was goal driven to see this special project through until it hit the ground rolling to SEMA 2018!”

49

Jordan decided to take the cab off the frame and fill in the factory frame holes for that smooth finish to start with. As they continued this process, the crew knew that the 20” Stage 4 Ultimate AirRide suspension had particular specifications that didn’t require a lot of the factory parts. So they removed the rear leaf spring brackets, as well as the front radius arm brackets , and even went as far as designing a custom plate where the old spare tire used to exist in order to mount and display all the intriguing components that made the functionality of the air suspension come to life. He also powder coated the axles and installed AFE Power front/ rear diff covers in addition to AFE Power’s transmission pan and engine oil pan for that special touch. With the one-off Extreme frame complete, a set of 28x16 Specialty Forged wheels wrapped in 42” Fury tires with True Spike lug nuts finishes off the towering stance. Air Ride Equipped with AirLift Performance 3H/3P setup with Flo Airride dual billet tanks, dual Flo Airride compressors, accompanied by Hornblasters Shocker Horns were added, while performance upgrades include a PPEI EZ LYNK AutoAgent 2 with a switch on the fly, FLO~PRO diesel stainless exhaust, AFE Power cold air intake, EGR and DPF delete, and Mishimoto hot and cold side Intercooler piping.

50

51

Finishing the exterior include an Extreme grille designed by RoyaltyCore, custom red AMP Research Power Steps, Main Event emblems, Extreme side vent badges, Morimoto XB LED headlights and Recon LED tail lights that were all done by plainANsimple. Jordan also has a Ram air hood from RK Sport, Retrax Powertrax PRO MX, Bedrug full liner, and a Bedside with added railing and storage compartments. Plus, the Ford has Bodyguard A2L front and rear bumpers with HEISE LED light bars and undercarriage rock lights by METRA Electronics. The bumpers feature front/rear Monster Hooks shackles accompanied with InfiniteRule Security Locking pins for added safety. “We faced minor challenges in rerouting the factory wire harnesses to hide all the wires, properly running all air lines, as well as putting the pieces like a puzzle back together after tearing apart a new Ford F-250 into a million pieces! In order to overcome these issues, the crew had to really plan out where everything would go and properly label every part that was disassembled and reassembled onto the truck.

52

53

As a build that would normally take six months, the crew finished it in half the time to be able to meet their deadline. “The final product was amazing as it shows in the amount of time and work we put into it,” Jordan admits. “I was always taught that you only get out what you put in, and me and my team at Extreme Off road & Performance Inc. fully accomplished everything we wanted with the elaborate ideas we added to this build and to be able to put the Extreme name on it.” As one of their most comprehensive builds to date, the responses they’ve received for their hard work was nothing short of great. Everyone that has seen the truck in person has been blown away by the quality of the build, along with the attention to detail that really draws viewers in as they take notice of all the intricate accents. “We at Extreme Off road & Performance stand by our work and we feel proud, accomplished, and honored to be able to build something so great that it puts a smile on people’s faces!” Project Supreme Extreme has been showcased at SEMA and the LA Autoshow and will continue to be shown at various events in Texas. “This build definitely has its features that stands above the rest of the past builds we’ve completed at Extreme Off road & Performance Inc., including its crazy suspension work and details underneath!” GEAR: 2018 FORD SUPER DUTY F-250 LARIAT OWNER: JORDAN O’KRINSKY

hen your services are constantly in-demand, all the exposure and requests can be a blessing and a curse. Obviously, it’s a blessing because you’re always busy, but a curse because now you’re so busy that you have to start turning away business because you don’t have the facility or resources to keep up with the demand. The O’Krinsky family knew this dilemma all too well after their shop, Extreme Offroad & Performance, in Katy, Texas, became famous and sought after for their level of customization and detail in the custom lifted truck scene.

N O’KRINSKY “POPS” AND AUSTI JORDAN, MICHAEL

56

When the decision was finally made to start the facility upgrade, brothers Austin and Jordan, along with their father Michael O’Krinsky, had to find a new place that had everything their old one didn’t. “We all combined our ideas and discussed how we could change the aftermarket industry again and that’s when we came up with our final product in our new facility!” Jordan mentions. “We wanted our business to not only be luxurious with our new modern style and well organized shop, but also have it be a home that current and future clients will continue to stop by making it an inviting environment! All three of us wanted that same goal in making our new facility a home for everyone who walks through our doors with a look of amazement on their faces to see what a shop could really be like!” Looking for a building with a great street view and layout wasn’t any easy task and the search was long and tedious. It couldn’t be just any open space given they wanted to create a vibe that was similar to a luxury car dealership, allowing customers to view a wide range of products and more the moment they stepped inside. But after looking for what felt like forever (but was actually three months), they finally found the perfect spot – a building that Jordan feels just “fell into our laps like it was just waiting for us all along!”

57

Once the new facility was found, it was time for the hard work and dedication to begin. But since that’s what Extreme Off road & Performance are known for, it was just like a SEMA crunch for the crew, with the long hours needed to make it a smooth transition. While a lot of the old heavy machinery made its way to the new shop, they were also excited to add loads of new things to help them branch out and off er more to their clientele. “We are now working on the old school muscle cars, as well as exotic cars to add to the already long list of services we off er, which includes motor work, vehicle wraps, paint protection film (PPF), a car audio division expansion, body kits, and much more! We are also constantly staying ahead with new equipment and technology that we obtain from

SEMA to increase production and stay ahead of our schedules!” They’ve also added more skilled and knowledgeable employees with niche skill sets to excel at all their new off erings. As they settle into the new facility and ramp up their business to another level, the O’Krinskys are still continuing to provide great customer service to all their clients, and pursue new clients to off er everything under one roof making them truly a one-stop-shop for anyone’s vehicles needs!

hen anyone can lift a truck or Jeep these days, only a few can truly make them drive and steer like perfection. Joey Maximus Gonzales of Maximum Altitude isn’t about creating builds just for show, given that function is what he and his team thrives on. So for his own Jeep build, function was of utmost importance. “I wanted to have the biggest, baddest and only JLU Jeep that would drive and perform on-and-off road like it should,” Joey mentions. “Something that would definitely grab your attention, even if you didn’t like lifted vehicles.”

I WANTED TO HAVE THE BIGGEST, BADDEST AND ONLY JLU JEEP THAT WOULD DRIVE AND PERFORM ON-AND-OFF ROAD LIKE IT SHOULD.” Joey’s JL Beast was already thought up before he even got the Jeep and Michael from Strictly Customs Design created the rendering with Joey’s vision and the project officially began. “I wanted the Jeep to be a full build and not just another cookie-cutter, bolt-on kit,” he admits. So he called his buddy Mark Hansen, owner of Road Armor, and mentioned he was building the “biggest and baddest JLU in the nation” and needed some extra flair. Mark was on board and provided him with their new bumpers, body armor, fender flares, rock sliders and billet tow shackles to give it clearance for articulation as well as an extremely aggressive look. 61

The suspension is where the craftsmanship really shines, sporting some 2004 F-350 Dually diff erentials welded in Artec Industries full axle trusses, along with arm mounts. They also installed Yukon 5:38 gears covered with aFe diff erential covers and custom-built all of their steering using DOM tubing and heims. Roam Off Road hooked them up with their one-off long arms, while Rebel Off road took care of them with their coilover conversion kit. 62

Joey also called King Shocks and had them specifically build coilovers that would accommodate the 44x19.50R26 Interco Boggers. To get this beast moving down the road, they installed a Prodigy Turbo system and paired it with stainless Magnaflow exhaust giving the JL the power to move the 44s handily while Inland Driveshaft built them some custom drive shafts and a modified transfer case yoke to handle the additional power. “That Prodigy Turbo install was really nice, but being a new body style and computer system, the Beast was having a hard time recognizing the tune files,” Joey explains. “So the owner of Prodigy came down for a day and helped us tune it perfectly. Most Jeeps have a hard time doing 70mph, but our Beast’s sweet spot is 85mph!” The Jeep was a huge hit with the public and judges at shows, taking home numerous “Best Of” trophies. “We’ve been reposted more than 2,500 times on social media,” he boasts. “The final build came out exceptionally well and one of the top 10 builds we’ve ever done (and we’ve done plenty over the past 25 years).” 64

magination is everything! Without it, we wouldn’t have the great technologies that make our lives more enjoyable. Of course, the automotive world thrives on this, too, as vehicles are consistently getting better with each and every year. However, there are a few that prefer styles from the past, only updated with today’s convenient amenities. It’s people like this who use their imaginations to conjure up new visions of how the classics would look and perform if they were built now. Randall Robertson of Rtech Fabrications in Coeur d’Alene, ID, is one such person that dreams of what could have been. He, like many of us, is a fan of classic vehicles and loves to retrofit them with modern features, such as air conditioning, a larger seating capacity, diesel engines and increased towing capabilities. These are all things that we take for granted in our modern rides, and adapting a classic truck to have all these pieces makes for the ultimate pickup.

69

Not only does Randall like to add these elements to classic trucks, but he also likes to reimagine them as well. For those that may not be in the know, General Motors didn’t produce a crew cab dually until two body styles after the first generation of C/K trucks. There were also a few companies that converted these old trucks into crew cabs for various utility purposes, but none were actually from GM. Several people have used these cabs to make trucks like this, but none have done exactly what Randall has accomplished. He noticed a few things he could improve on and decided to build his own version of the ’66 C/K pickup he first envisioned. Randall then named his new build The Ponderosa, as it reminded him of good times during his childhood at the Ponderosa Ranch theme park near Tahoe, NV. Turning dreams into reality, the truck started with a ’72 C30 motorhome frame that received some new crossmembers for the suspension components. Giving this truck a solid foundation is a Dana 60 front axle and Dana 70 rear axle with a locking diff erential. The front was equipped with custom disc brakes while 13” drums went on the rear. Handling the duties of the suspension is a set of Skyjacker leaf springs combined with Bilstein reservoir shocks. Reinforcing the rear is a custom set of traction bars.

The Ponderosa gets its distinctive look in part with the custom-made crew cab that Randall created by salvaging parts from donor ’64-’66 Chevy trucks. Rtech uses as much original steel as possible since they believe nothing else compares. Once the cab was stretched, a pair of front doors were used and modified to fit the final vision. For the rear of the truck, Randall used an original 8’ bed and utilized a set of stepside fenders and modified them to make dually bedsides. The wood bed floor was then created using Bedwood & Parts strips and planks. Up front, the clip is all original but was smoothed out along with the rest of the truck. Continuing with the theme, a custom utilitystyle rear bumper was made and bolted on the back end. 37” tall Nitto Trail Grappler M/Ts paired with 20” American Force Canon wheels complete Ponderosa’s modern stance. 70

71

The intention of building The Ponderosa was to not only make a beefy looking truck but to also improve its functions. To help increase power capabilities, Randall rebuilt a 5.9L 12-valve Cummins diesel engine and added a Comp Cams camshaft along with a few other mods. A K&N filter breathes air into the Borg-Warner K27 turbo and Rtech water-to-air intercooler. This was backed up with a NV500 five-speed manual transmission that sends the 550hp and 1,300tq to the axles via a NP205 transfer case and custom driveshafts. After the truck was mocked up, it was torn down for the chassis to get powder coated and the body to be painted in the original light green color. Giving this truck a bulkier look is a set of six American Force Cannon 20 wheels with 37 Nitto Trail Grappler tires. On the inside, original buddy bucket seats frames were secured up front while a bench seat was used in the rear. The springs were removed and foam was added before they were reupholstered in reproduction materials. For some extra styling, an original hood was chopped down to create a trick lid for the center console. Finishing it all off, custom door panels and a headliner was created to match the rest of the interior. From top to bottom this truck is completely badass. It is done so well that you would have thought GM had originally made one of these trucks back in the day. Now that this K30 is completed, it stands as an example of what Rtech is capable of producing and Randall is not stopping here. He has a bunch of other creations in the works, so keep on the lookout for more wild trucks like this in the future!

any enthusiasts dream of making it to SEMA, but not all succeed. Matt Hwang of So. Cal has always been a car enthusiast and a quality build was a dream of his. But Matt wanted to do more than just a run-ofthe-mill and decided to create something that would also incorporate his other hobbies, which include camping and outdoor target shooting. “A badass off-road vehicle has always fit into that equation,” he admits. “I was inspired by

Roman Racela’s Silver Panda Jeep JK that was featured previously in LFTD x LVLD and that set the wheels in motion for me. Jeep just came out with the all-new JL chassis over the JK, so it was the opportune moment to start a build on the new platform. I reached out to Roman to assist me with the build process and he obliged to help me. We decided on a design concept to guide us, then carefully selected the parts, came up with a wheel design, and spent many late nights wrenching at the shop.”

77

With only two months before SEMA, the build team (which consisted of fellow enthusiasts) wanted to explore the potential of the new JL chassis and build a balanced vehicle with equal parts off-road and street. But with the added challenge of the platform being so new, parts were not as easy to come by with many manufacturers still in the development stage. Matt knew he wanted something that would get people talking at the show, but also needed it to maintain its rugged functionality so he turned to tried and true companies to secure parts he knew would fit the bill. “We decided to go with something subtle and clean since we wanted the quality of the build to attract the attention versus loud and gaudy candy-paint colors,” he says. The crew dubbed it The Buckshot mainly because of the team’s combined affinity for firearms and their build partners at DTF Off-Road wheels that custom-fabricated a set of wheels with a design that resembled the spread of buckshot from a shotgun. “The wheels are definitely the jewelry of the vehicle and stylistically sets us apart from the rest,” Matt admits. 78

The combination of lighting from Rigid Industries, APS, and Quake LED illuminates the night and provides clarity and visibility during all conditions. All the electronics and electrical power distribution are controlled by the sPOD Bantam touchscreen controller. For the exterior, armor protection is by WARN and Kargo Master Safari which kept the rig battle-ready at all times. Tint by DUB IR and plush leather seats by Roadwire Leather Interiors kept the interior of the cab insanely comfortable for being an offroad vehicle.

The coilover suspension lift from Skyjacker combined with the DTF Off-Road wheels and Yokohama Geolandar X-MT tires were meticulously put together to provide the proper stance and functionality he wanted. “The coilovers make everything sit precisely how it should as well as providing a silky-smooth ride quality while keeping you as planted as possible,” he admits. “Roman and I had a chance to wheel the Buckshot through Death Valley, CA, last spring and the suspension easily soaked up all the washboard roads and obstacles that were thrown at us. It performed phenomenally while

both crawling over rough terrain and doing 80mph+ on dirt roads. The X-MTs were also amazing and they had my full confidence when I pushed them through sketchy terrain. Not only did the Yokohamas perform like a champ on dirt, but also excelled on pavement. We couldn’t believe we were driving on mud tires because they were so quiet.” The Jeep was unveiled at SEMA 2018 in the DUB LIVE! outdoor pavilion and was definitely a show stopper. From seasoned builders to industry professionals, everyone was impressed by the JL build. “Many admired the craftsmanship of the wheels and the custom parts that we fabbed for this build. Both builders and enthusiasts appreciated that with all the modifications and customization on the Buckshot, it still looked relatable as a vehicle that could be driven daily on the streets and taken to high country backroads on weekends.”
