EDITOR’S NOTES

C

ustomizing is a year-round job, although builds usually shift into high gear two to three months before SEMA Show. But there are those few that like to live dangerously on the edge and start their projects weeks before the biggest aftermarket and auto stage in the world. To help you get a head start on your big SEMA Show dreams, we’ve included vehicle features in this issue that will surely kill any procrastination bug you may be experiencing with your build, hoping it all comes together just in time for the big debut in the fall. The mighty Zeus is king of the Greek pantheon and reigns supreme, which is why Chad Riffle named his 2019 GMC Sierra 3500HD Denali after the god of sky, thunder and lightning. The truck needed to be a work and family rig, so he made sure to create something that had the best of both worlds. This black and yellow Denali is made for the gods! Randall Cote sought out to have the boldest Silverado around and chose the most alluring

ISSUE 25

Satin Ocean Shimmer Blue finish to make it really standout. But to have his dreams become reality wasn’t always easy. He had to overcome challenges to see his build completed the way he envisioned. Chris Tryon’s friends may call him “basic,” touting Pumpkin Spice lattes from Starbucks everywhere he goes in the fall. As a lover of all things orange, his Toyota Tundra is anything but basic! What do you do when you want a Mega Cab, but don’t like Dodge trucks? You follow in Gerry Davis’ footsteps and create one using a Ford F-250 Platinum! He converted the truck to look like his dream rig and dressed it up with tons of other mods to create his DTF Ford! Everybody knows that a Jeep can do it all, which is exactly the reason why K.C. Scott decided on purchasing and building a Rubicon. As his first lifted vehicle and SEMA build, he made sure to go big to impress and show he’s more than capable of hanging with the big boys in the big leagues of customizing.

Skyjacker Suspensions is known for their hardworking and quality products and we caught up with its president Lonnie McCurry Jr., to give us his thoughts on the new Jeep Gladiator JT and what he and the crew at Skyjacker had developed for it. In case you haven’t heard, we have a new publication called Adventure Rigs for those who like to take off and conquer the unknown with their trucks, Jeeps, SUVs, and 4WD vans. We’ve given readers a little taste of what the magazine provides with a feature on Garrett Wong’s 2016 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van 4x4 that’s made for the trails and more. We also have the rundown on what went down at the 2019 Turkey Drag car and truck show that took place at Wind Point Park in Lone Oak, Texas.

/BOLTLOCK |

@BOLTLOCK

BOLT Lock, a company who uses the ignition keys of vehicles to unlock their patented, award-winning locks, has met this transition to keyless entry and keyless starts by announcing that their products use the valet key which comes with the electronic key fobs. The “Breakthrough One-Key Lock Technology” innovated by BOLT Lock utilizes a vehicle’s ignition key to open every lock produced by the company. Upon the first insertion and rotation of the key in the specially crafted tumblers inside every lock, the key is permanently memorized. Truck and SUV owners utilize BOLT locks with great frequency, so the company is informing customers that its technology works with the valet keys of the key fob vehicles to ensure that anything these vehicle owners secure with their BOLT locks can remain protected.

2019 GMC SIERRA 3500HD DENALI 36

T

o mod or not to mod, is something that crosses many a family man’s mind when purchasing a new ride. Chad Riffle was in this exact situation when he purchased his 2019 GMC Sierra 3500HD Denali. It’s an awesome combination of a work truck and family vehicle in its stock form, but after careful consideration, he decided he wanted to have the best of both worlds and his headturning, black and yellow, custom work and family truck - he calls Zeus - was born. The bold colorway of Zeus combined with the stance of the dually provided by BK Fab absolutely commands attention. “To be honest, we were just hanging out and listening to the radio when the song ‘Black and Yellow’ by Whiz Khalifa came on,” Chad details. “We knew then that was the color scheme to follow. I haven’t seen many trucks with those colors before and wanted something to really stand out.” To ensure the build up of Zeus was handled properly, Chad enlisted Chris Payne, aka the Truck Guru, to come on board as the build manager. From there, Chris helped them out with the best options for the GM, using his experience and expertise and Chad’s various requests to achieve the overall vision. “The BK Fab suspension with King shocks, Fury Tires and my KICKER sound system are the highlights on the truck that I’m most appreciative for. They really make the truck in my opinion.” But the amount of detail put into the truck was also the talk of the show when Zeus made its presence known at this past 2019 SEMA Show.

37

Like most builds, Chad did experience a few snags throughout the process. Getting in some of the major parts on time, such as the wheels and steps, was a major battle. “We stayed in contact with the manufacturers on a daily basis to ensure everything would still come on time,” he details. “It required tons of hard work, long hours and sleepless nights, but we were able to overcome all obstacles to create a badass truck in time for its unveiling.” 38

39

According to Chad, the amount of hard work and time shows on the finished product, and demonstrates how no corners were cut to get it looking its very best. “There are people constantly taking video and asking for pictures when they see it,” he admits. “It’s a pretty awesome experience just driving it.” For him, it’s also amazing how the truck was done by five guys who have never worked together before, making the final product something they are all very proud of.

2017 FORD F-250 PLATINUM SUPER DUTY

“WE HAD A PRETTY GOOD IDEA OF WHAT WE WANTED, BUT IN THE END, WE JUST REALLY HAD TO CHANGE THE TEAL FRAME AND AXLES FOR WHITE ONES...”

44

G

erry Davis had always wanted a Mega Cab, but was never a fan of Dodge trucks. Since he still couldn’t shake his dreams of building one, he decided to be different and create his dream rig using a Ford F-250 Platinum. When he got the green-light from Jimmy at Elite Customs, the road to SEMA officially began. Gerry only had two requirements when it came to the truck: it had to still be “drivable” and it had to have teal in its color scheme per the request of his wife. To make sure that the teal really popped, he decided on a white truck that helped the Ford retain its clean and classic look. “We had a pretty good idea of what we wanted, but in the end, we just really had to change the teal frame and axles for white ones – which wasn’t a radical change,” he mentions.

45

When it came down to the rest of the modifications and accessories, Gerry made sure he went into it informed and researched every company and offering, finally deciding on what made sense for the overall function and aesthetic of the build. His favorite mods include Morimoto headlights and wheels because “no one has them yet,” and of course the cab conversion (a way to get him his dream ride without having to actually buy a Dodge). But spacing out the Super Duty was a bit of a challenge, he mentions, given the team started out at 10” then went to 12” before ending up with 15” total - a bit more than anticipated, but the end result didn’t disappoint. All that trouble was worth it, and after 10 months of labor and more than 150K in parts and work, the truck was finally finished. Gerry christened the Ford Daddy’s Trust Fund, given the amount of funds to create it, but calls it DTF for short. 46

In the performance category, Gerry wanted to boost the power, adding a few upgrades to up the ante. Additions like a FLO~PRO exhaust, PPEI custom tuning and EZ Lynks all increase the power when using it as a daily driver. Its good looks come via accessories that include: a RK Sports hood, Road Armor Identity front and rear bumpers, Gravel Empire grille and AMP Research Power Steps, to name a few. Lighting is provided Twisted Pro All-Terrain and recovery gear includes a Rhino Hitch and Monster Hooks, while the interior is as clean as the outside with matching Alea leather. At first glance, it’s modest compared to most SEMA builds, but upon closer inspection its details stand out and the craftsmanship shows. DTF was well-received when it debuted at SEMA. “I love every inch of it,” Gerry admits, adding that he loves driving it because of all the attention it gets him. He also loves how the truck has been a family affair, with his wife and kids lending a hand whenever they could to help Gerry’s vision come to life.

2018 JEEP WRANGLER RUBICON

Y

ou can do it all with a Jeep. One minute you’re taking to the trails and handling any terrain like a boss, the next you’re coasting down the highway, with the top off and the wind in your hair. This appeal is what attracts many to owning a Wrangler, including K.C. Scott, Jr. As a custom car enthusiast, who has old schools, cars and trucks, this was his first lifted vehicle on his resume in addition to displaying at SEMA for the first time. His inspiration came from past creations by Rebel Off Road in Laguna Hills, CA. K.C. wanted something that stood out and looked really aggressive and thanks to the Jeep’s versatility, he decided to nickname it “DOiTALL THE JL” that also coincides with his own “DOiTALL” brand. “I

52

had a vision of what I wanted, and I truly stuck with it,” he details. “I was asked to do different things and go with other designs, but I stood firm on my vision and what I wanted my build to look like.” Before even starting anything, the color red was chosen for his soon-to-be show-stopping creation. It so happens to also be his favorite color and the team colors of the Portland Trail Blazers, which was reminiscent of his hometown of Portland, Oregon. To gain a better perspective of what he wanted for the end result, K.C. did his homework. He watched hours of videos on YouTube and scoped out various IG and FB profiles dedicated to Jeeps to get the inspiration needed to finally head to the dealer and purchase a Rubicon.

53

Along the way, K.C. received insight from friends with experience in the Jeep community such as his buddy Marco (IG @spikedjeep), who helped K.C. choose products he wouldn’t have otherwise considered. For suspension, he chose the popular Rebel Off Road Recon Coilover Kit, with the all-black King shocks being one of his favorite mods. Another highlight is the KC HiLites Pro 6 Gravity LED light bar and pods given they have the iconic old school look that he loves. Then there are the massive 19.5/4428 TSL Boggers wrapped around custom 28x16 deep dish forged Dropstars wheels that turn it into a monster Jeep.

54

55

K.C. couldn’t be happier with how it all turned out and was proud of himself for turning a simple idea into reality. Plus, the response from others has also been great. “People from around the world are constantly asking me about the specifics of the Jeep. I’ve had people driving next to me in traffic, asking if I’d pull over to take pics of it.” With all the love you can also expect some haters on the Jeep that call it a “show queen” or think it’s ruined, but K.C. doesn’t let it get to him. “It’s my money, my Jeep, my vision,” he asserts. “That’s what Jeeps are for - to express yourself and what you like. I love the Jeep community as a whole as I have been welcomed into the community with open arms.” K.C. drives his Jeep almost daily and doesn’t plan on garaging it any time soon. He’ll also take it on the show circuit to display his vision to the world and hopefully take home some trophies at the same time.

WORDS | PHOTOS: BRANDON BURRELL

W

hen it comes to anything pumpkin spice, most people associate it with fall, when the leaves change color, the weather gets cooler, lattes, candles or “basic” girls. But many also associate the term with the color Orange. The bold hue is one of those colors that if done right on a vehicle, it can really stand out. Chris Tryon from Asheville, North Carolina, is an orange fanatic and when he saw that Toyota released the new “Inferno” color for the 2015 Tundra TRD Pro, he immediately started searching for one because he needed to see it in person. And when we say Chris is an orange fanatic, let’s just say everything he does has orange involved in it. His wallet, key chain, accent colors on any clothing and even his pocket knife is orange. While at a car show in Texas, he stopped at a local Toyota dealership that just so happened to have a couple of new Inferno-colored trucks and instantly fell in love with it. Once back home, he went to his local dealership, (with most likely a pumpkin spice coffee in hand) and ordered the exact truck he wanted: an Inferno 2015 Toyota Tundra TRD Pro Crewmax 4WD. He originally

ordered this truck to replace his daily driven tow pig, and had no plans to build it to the level it is here in the magazine. He drove the stock Tundra for only a couple of months before the itch to customize it changed his original plans. Having been enamored with custom vehicles since he was a teenager, Chris knew he was going all in. He once dove in deep and heavily modified his 1990 Honda Accord that he still owns to this day and is retired in his garage in show-ready condition. Prior to his Tundra, Chris helped a few good friends build their lifted SEMA trucks, so he saw first hand how big the lifted scene was and knew adding some basic mods to his truck would make a difference but would only be the beginning of the process. Being that the Tundra was his daily, Chris decided that a subtle lift would be more than enough for his build. Once a project vehicle is planned, a name is usually added to it - be it by theme, color or the concept behind it. Since Chris is one of those guys that always has a cup of coffee with him, his friends constantly ride him about it, saying “he’s basic.” Coupled with the truck’s color, the name “Pumpkin Spice Tundra” was a natural fit. 61

Chris and his friends teamed up with Mike Mashburn and his crew at Rimz One in Mooresville, North Carolina, to install the 7” BDS lift kit, with Fox coilovers in the front, Fox shocks in the rear, Ekstrom Design steering kit and rear shackles, and a set of AMP Research power steps. This look worked for a while and served its purpose. During that time, a few more upgrades were done, such as installing the Transfer Flow 46-gallon direct replacement fuel tank to cut back on gas stops while towing vehicles to car shows. Tundra’s are known for having poor fuel economy, so that combined with the taller tires called for the the larger gas tank. Air Lift helper bags and a Hellwig rear sway bar were also added to help with the towing capabilities, and the stock spare under the truck was pulled out and replaced with a Hornblasters Shocker XL train horn and a Viair Onboard air system. At this point, Chris realized that his truck was about halfway done for what it would take to get the truck shown at the SEMA Show. The plan was made, companies were contacted and a spot for SEMA was secured with Dropstars Wheels. Now all that was left was to finish the truck. Knowing he wanted to update the trucks interior and add a pretty massive audio installation, he gave Shawn Arnold a call at Ultimate Audio in Lexington, South Carolina, to schedule some shop time for him and his crew to work their magic. Before they tore into the interior, Chris had Classic Soft Trim in Charlotte, North Carolina, install the Roadwire Leather seats in black leather with orange stitching. With the seats done, Shawn had his team build custom door panels to each house 62

two 6.5” Memphis Audio M-Class components for a total of eight mids and eight tweeters. They also built a custom hybrid center console that is half stock and half a sub enclosure for two 10” Memphis Audio Bass Reference subs. Under the rear seat they fabricated an amp rack for four Memphis Audio amplifiers and two XS Power batteries. All of the audio is controlled with a Kenwood DNX893S head unit. While the interior was apart, they also did a custom grey suede and black leather headliner and wrapped the door panels, console, amp rack, and part of the dash in black vinyl and grey suede all with orange stitching to tie it together. Other interior upgrades consist of an ESP Truck trailer brake controller mount and a full set of Husky Liner floor mats.

For the exterior, Chris ordered a set of Fusion front and rear bumpers, with OLB lights in both, and added a set of Bushwacker pocket style fender flares. They were all color-matched with Rhino Linings spray on liner. The stock grille was swapped for one from DB Customz while the headlights were sent to plainANsimple to have them color matched, and the Klearz Manufacturing clear lenses and Diode Dynamics lights installed. They also converted them to projector lights with HID bulbs. Smoked taillights and a third brake light add the finishing touches to the lighting. Rimz One handled the A.R.E. Z-Series camper shell install. Rhino Rack roof racks were installed on both the cab and shell giving Pumpkin Spice added utility. The cab also has their Pioneer Platform

and the shell has the Pioneer Tray. Both roof racks hold a total of four 18” Diode Dynamics LED light bars, which have become known as his “hey girl” lights. Lighting up the sidewalk while cruising with them just to yell “hey girl” always makes his cruising more fun. A set of AVS Vent Visors were fitted to the windows and a Gen-Y Hitch held secure with Bolt Lock pins round out the exterior upgrades. Moving into the bed, Ultimate Audio built a custom bar to house four Memphis Audio 6.5” tower speakers facing the rear for audio while at car shows. A Bedrug was installed as well as a set of Undercover Swing Cases to provide storage.

63

For the performance upgrades to the stock V8, an Airaid intake, Gibson cat-back exhaust and a Hypertech Interceptor Programmer help the truck breathe better, while the Hypertech Speedometer Calibrator makes sure the speedometer is accurate with the larger tires. Chris also added a sPOD controller under the hood to manage all the electrical accessories like lighting, train horns and the onboard air compressor. Stopping power comes courtesy of a full Neo Motorsports big brake kit that consists of 6-piston calipers and larger rotors. The final touch for Chris’ cross-country journey from North Carolina to Las Vegas was the new wheels. He opted for 22x14 Dropstars Wheels 652BM wheels and mated them to 37x12.50R22 Nitto Ridge Grapplers. But knowing a stock, out-of-the-box set of wheels wouldn’t do, he had Rimz One custom paint them to match the truck. The day after the wheels were mounted, Chris hooked up a trailer and loaded Kristin Justus’ WRX, which was also to be on display at SEMA, and drove the Tundra on the almost 5,000-mile round trip to the show. He noted that the lifted Tundra, trailered the WRX as if it was stock and it was an easy drive to Las Vegas and back. Currently, Chris enjoys his Pumpkin Spice Tundra, taking it to as many car and truck shows as time allows. This build was and is definitely a head turner and far from basic, unlike those Pumpkin Spice lattes.

hen building a vehicle, you always have to think about the end use in order to formulate its design and function. For Randall Cote, there was no doubt that his Silverado needed to be a daily driver and work horse, pulling trailers and handling heavy loads, which is why the first modification he placed on was a 4-link rear lift kit with air bags. While the suspension was an easy choice, the color wasn’t as simple.

66

“Picking colors is always hard since you always want to be different and there are so many different colors to choose from,” he details. Ultimately, he went with a blue from 3M called Satin Ocean Shimmer Blue, which didn’t have any paint code or powder coat to match. To fix this problem, the body shop that did the work spent hours trying to match it. The paint process ended up being the most challenging part of the truck build, but it was all worth it when it was all said and done.

Randall wanted to make sure everything complemented each other when it came down to the mods and felt that the initial design was a bit stressful. The first rendering did differ from the final build, with one notable change being the 30" wheels that were really supposed to be 26", and the 44" tires that were initially 40". Plus, Randall ended up painting the wheels to color match the truck instead of doing polished. The wheels are his favorite addition and apparently he was beaten only by a month or two to be the first in Canada to run 30" wheels. “I’m still the first to run a set of RBP 30” wheels,” he admits. The other big highlight for Randall are the 44" tires on a 12" lift, complementing the large offset. “We ended up at the last minute adding a Fab Fours open fender system to be able to run the bigger tires,” he says. “I had planned on running a sled deck in the box of the truck and after having it in there we realized it didn’t complement the truck properly, so we went with the UnderCover fiberglass box cover.”

67

As Randall’s first big build, it by far surpasses all his other trucks and gave him the most headaches. “This was a big challenge for me, but it won’t be my last.” According to him, building a truck in Canada proved to be its own challenge given all the part companies are out of the U.S. The exchange rate from USD to CAD, plus all the border duty fees, made the build more expensive. “The parts were even held up at the border for a few days at customs, which definitely affected the timeline of the build.” Spending the entire summer and fall getting ready for its 2019 SEMA deput, it was all worth the trouble when the crowd saw how massive and clean the Chevy turned out. “I’m super happy with it and the color came out exactly how I wanted it to. I love how it makes people look and stare, and up here in Canada, a build like this is very far and few in between, so you get noticed everywhere,” he admits. Randall plans to take the truck around to a few more shows over the winter months and into the summer. “I have done some small things over the Christmas holidays such as a fundraiser called Stuff The Box, where we use the vehicles to attract people from the city to come see the trucks and bring a small gift to throw in the box of the truck which we donate to the less fortunate children for Christmas. Now, it will slowly be transitioned into my daily driver over the course of 2020, and more than likely pull our next SEMA 2020 vehicle down to Vegas for us!”

PHOTOS: DALE MARTIN | ACTION PHOTOS COURTESY OF SKYJACKER SUSPENSIONS

I

t’s hard to believe that Skyjacker Suspensions started in the backyard of Lonnie and Nell McCurry’s home in West Monroe, LA. As one of the leaders in the suspension business, Skyjacker has roots in racing and mud digging, with Lonnie building a career out of his favorite hobby. The very first product they ever released was for a Ford Bronco. Now, almost 50 years later, the company is known for having solid parts to outfit the most popular trucks and Jeeps in use today. Skyjacker is also truly a family affair, with several family members at the helm. But one thing is for sure, Skyjacker Suspensions is still fueled by the love of the sport that Lonnie had all those years back. We had an opportunity to catch up with his son, Lonnie McCurry Jr., who shares the same passion as his father and now leads Skyjacker as its president. He gives us his thoughts about the new Gladiator JT and what he and the crew at Skyjacker had developed for it.

73

FIRST IMPRESSIONS I have been very interested in a Jeep Gladiator as a personal daily driver for quite some time, so I enjoyed following all the spy photos and any prelaunch information available. I even went to the Los Angeles Auto Show in 2018 to see the first models unveiled and found myself investigating and admiring its uniqueness. While I heard Jeep would keep the iconic ability to remove the top and doors, I was surprised how good that actually looks on a pickup truck when I first saw it! From the underside, the rear is completely different than its Wrangler sibling, yet not simply a Ram truck rear, either. The most important factor was that Jeep maintained solid axles, which is key for affordable aftermarket modifications. When I finally picked mine up and after some test driving and a fair workout, the Gladiator was notably comfortable and nimble, especially for a truck. Many times I had to remind myself that I did find the rear to be a less flexible (less suspension droop) than a JL, but again impressive for a stock truck.

At 6’1” the interior room is ample for me, and seats (Jeep leather option) are very comfortable. All the interior controls, buttons and switches were all in good reach and weather resistant. I have since spent some long days on the highway and on the trail. I was comfortable all day in both situations with good placement of the armrests and console. The only thing I would prefer is a bigger horsepower option, but don’t mistake that as a complaint because partnered with the smooth 8-speed transmission, the Gladiator is not really underpowered. But who doesn’t want more power? The Gladiator is an overall winner! On the first weekend, I loaded up some lawn equipment and my son said, “How cool is it to do truck things with a Jeep!” I’ve had that feeling many times since.

74

RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT At Skyjacker, we build suspensions for adventures, daily driving and everything in between. The Gladiator is quite possibly the best vehicle ever built to fit this lifestyle. After having reviewed both the JT and the JL in their stock form, we found the rear-wheel travel to be less than the JL. Since the Gladiator needed to retain “truck” functionality, we worked hard designing special rear coils to allow for offroad articulation but also control loads from hauling or towing. We did that with a 2-stage Variable rate design: the first stage has some tightly wound coils that can expand offroad to allow for extended suspension droop; the second stage is a variable rate that increases through the suspension travel to slow it down as approaching the bump stops.

We now offer 2.5”, 3.5” and 4.5” lifts focused on all new coil springs that further enhance the multipurpose uses of this vehicle. While we did develop some metal coil spacers, we don’t feel those really mess with the possibilities this Gladiator has to offer. We designed new front coils for the Gladiator (not just using JL coils), and utilize 8 new rear coils. Our lifts are specific for Rubicon and non-Rubicon models so no one is guessing which lift to use or how much lift will be gained. We use specific shock absorbers that are valved-matched to our coil spring rates for these Gladiators. My personal favorite for the JT is the M95 Monotube shocks, with matching dual steering damper kit for larger tires. I use the same suspension we sell and every time I’m behind the wheel it’s about testing and finding ways to improve. That is something my dad taught me and one of the reasons Skyjacker is now 45 years strong. Other than local Louisiana testing, I have already wheeled the JT on the Ultimate Adventure for a week in Alaska, then on the JT Experience from New York through the New England area ending in Maine, and I’m currently on the JT & JL Experience. Needless to say, I’ve traveled many miles in it and through diverse terrain. I also have Easter Jeep Safari marked on the calendar and 2020 is open to a lot of possibilities.

Aside from the suspension, I’ve added a few goodies to the Gladiator, including Ultimate 60 axles from Dana with ARB lockers; 40” Milestar Patagonia M/T tires on 17” Raceline beadlock wheels; bumpers, fenders and rockers from Fab Fours; a Warn Zeon 10-S winch; hydraulic steering from PSC; and aluminum skid plates underneath from Artec Industries. I also added Rigid lighting mods, such as their Adapt light bar, fog lights, and cowl mounted Pro Dually lights. For comms I have Rugged Radios, a DiamondBack bed cover to keep my gear dry, elements-free and safe. And earlier, I mentioned I wish there were more options for power, so I added more in the form of a Hellcat motor swap package by America’s Most Wanted 4x4. You’re never really finished building and personalizing a Jeep, and that’s just part of the fun and versatility. These modifications have given me a footing to build upon for anything I want this Gladiator to do and because of that, I could not be happier!

2016 MERCEDES -BENZ SPRINTER 4X4 144 HIGH ROOF OWNER/WORDS: GARRET WONG // PHOTOS: GLASSY VISUALS //

@ URBN_ESCAPE

[ MY ROOTS ] Growing up in LA, I was immersed in all styles of automotive culture and as a kid I was drawn to the import and sport compact scene. The street racing days were becoming hard to do as local racetracks were closing down. Oh, and the speeding tickets racked up quickly. I was introduced to the off-road scene by my good friend that started with him convincing our group of friends who didn’t own trucks to buy quads. This then led to the most expensive toy I’ve purchased as I needed to buy a truck to play in the dirt. The rest was history and I became hooked on going off-road and exploring. I’ve had a 2005 F150, 2007 Tacoma, and 2009 Polaris RZR S in the past. My first off-road rig was the F-150 that I used to haul the quads. I’m like a kid that can’t leave anything stock. I quickly researched what modifications I could do to personalize it. Back in 2005, it was all about huge lifts and tires so I put a 12” lift with Weld Wheels, 38” tires and a full audio system. I took it off-roading and sunk the truck in the mud frame-deep at Azusa OHV here in California. Thank goodness my buddy was able to pull me out. It was a fun truck but I quickly realized it was the most impractical build for the dirt.

I moved on to a Tacoma that I could take offroad and haul motorcycles to the trails and track. Some friends at the track had Sprinter vans and I became interested in their rig setups. At that time, I was looking for something that was more flexible and modular than a pickup truck. With its spacious cargo area and optional factory 4 wheel drive, the Sprinter van was a great candidate to upfit for my purposes. I wanted to build a van that could take my toys to the dirt, go on family road trips, and camping with friends. More of a rugged van build out instead of the normal RV-style builds.

[ DETAIL ORIENTED ] I’m obsessed with researching the various options for parts and I’m a firm believer in you get what you pay for. Do it right the first time instead of wasting money and time on cheaper and inferior options, even if it means taking longer to build. On this project, I tried to cover the basics and keep everything more modular. Being overprepared rather than underprepared almost became my battle cry and I didn’t want to become that guy who held up the the group on the trails because I cut some corners. I tried to do some of the basics of the van build like sound deadening but building a Sprinter is nothing like building a truck. There’s a lot more that goes into outfitting a Sprinter because it starts life as an empty 4-wheel drive cargo van. Building this van the correct way once with everything I needed to allow me to get to new locations I’d like to explore was a top priority. It took me three years of research and talking to other Sprinter van owners and upfitters to finalize my build list.

[ THE BUILD OUT ] I started with the interior and had Tint Evo apply nano ceramic window film from DUB IR as the massive windows let in so much heat and it made a tremendous difference in thermal regulation! Next on the checklist was sending the Sprinter to Jermiah at Luxe CC in Torrance, California, who has a ton of experience working on Sprinters, while not gouging customers with out-of-this-world pricing. He was a huge help and together we refined my build list. We added and took off items from the list based on his experience with other builds. They installed the insulation and sound deadening using Second Skin and 3M Thinsulate on the roof, side walls, doors and under flooring. A full modular interior kit from Adventure Wagon was also installed and includes bracing throughout the interior for a reliable mounting system, new walls, ceiling, and Maxair ceiling fan while incorporating L Track anchor points throughout. The L Track also works with Adventure Wagon quick release/ adjustable height MOAB bed, which I opted for. Once the foundation was laid, we then addressed storage. I went with the 2 Adventure Wagon Mule overhead lockers for quick access and no rattling while driving. A custom TruckVault drawer system was installed that span the full length of the cargo area with two drawers that came out at the rear of the van. A shorter drawer also came out to the side door, fully utilizing all space underneath the cargo floor. The TruckVault system allows me to safely and securely store valuable items in the van.

EXTERIOR: Full wrap with Hexis Matte paint protection film, DUB iR ceramic window tint, Line-X lower section and bumpers by Line-X of South LA, Terrawagen fender flares and snorkel, Custom Roof Rack

LIGHTING AND MOUNTS: KC HiLiTES Pro6 light bar, KC HiLiTES 4 DOT Gravity G4 fog lights, KC HiLiTES Pro6 lights in-grille, KC HiLiTES 2 C Series area lights RECOVERY GEAR: Warn Zeon Platinum 12-S winch, Warn Epic fairlead, Warn Epic shackles

Hexis BodyFence Matte paint protection film was installed by Impressive Wrap in El Monte, California, to protect the paint from chips and scratches. This gave the Sprinter an “armor” of protection and subtly changed the look of the factory pebble grey color; just giving it a matte look. I then had it finished by Line-X of South Los Angeles by spraying the lower section of the van to shield it from whatever the tires fling up. From there, I took the Sprinter up to CA Tuned in Sacramento, California, to have their Vader front bumper installed, keeping a clean factorylike look while cradling a Warn Zeon Platinum 12-S winch, Epic Fairlead, and Epic Shackles, and KC 4” Gravity fog lights. By the time this was added, a rear swing out bumper from Backwoods Adventure Mods was waiting at Luxe CC to be installed to hold a spare tire and cabinet, which holds my generator, Yankum rope, and other small recovery gear. We also added a TrakPak which mounts to a spare tire to hold my Action Trax recovery boards, shovel, and axe. With a wheelbase this long, I decided to swap out the ugly stock wheels with some tough looking Black Rhino Arsenal wheels and 35x12.50R18 Yokohama Geolandar X-AT tires to give a nice quiet ride on paved roads while also being able to have added traction to explore unbeaten paths. I had a Van Compass 2” Striker lift installed to make sure I have the clearance when going off pavement and making this a real off-road beast. We also installed Van Compass front sway bar quick disconnects and completed the rest of the armor from Van Compass, which included rock sliders and full skid plates under the engine, transfer case, rear differential, and fuel tank. I went with Terrawagen big fender flares as well as a snorkel and pre-filter kit to help keep the engine breathing clean air out on the trails. With the majority of the heavy mods complete, it was time to weigh the van and send it down to Agile Offroad in San Diego, California, to install their signature RIP (Ride Improvement Package) kit, which consists of coil assist and secondary Fox shocks for the front and Fox Adjustable shocks and new leaf spring pack for the rear. The RIP kit is built so the spring rates and shock valving

is setup to the van’s actual weight to maximize ride comfort and stability. We then reached out to Ward at Long Range America to see if they had a fuel tank solution for me. Ward informed us they had just confirmed a fitment and after a 30-minute conversation, the order was placed and a few days later Luxe swapped out the stock 24-gallon fuel tank for the Long Range Automotive 45-gallon tank. Proper lighting is essential for a build like this and I couldn’t find a simple way to mount lights on the van. I decided to have a custom roof rack made by Ed and Yen at Mobile Weld Specialists. I’ve known Ed for a long time and love his craftsmanship and they fabricated a sturdy roof rack with provisions for mounting LED lights. I’ve always loved the round classic lights from KC HiLiTES, so I ordered the Gravity Pro6 50” combo pattern light bar and 2” C series area lights to be mounted all around the rack. I wired up the KCs using Seaview cable glands for a watertight seal to run wires through the roof. A ladder from Van Compass to gain access to the roof seamlessly mounted to the rack above and to the sliders below for a clean, easy install. 98

[ THE SHAKE DOWN AND FAMILY TRIP ] Once I was comfortable with the build, I headed out to Joshua Tree to do some shake down wheeling and to be honest, I was kind of nervous not knowing what the van would really be able to handle. To my surprise, the Sprinter was more capable than I thought. The trip was a great weekend since I was able to take my family with me on its maiden ride. As I got more comfortable with the rig, I found a hill with loose rocks and wanted to see if I could make it up. It was steeper than I had anticipated but luckily I aired down and was able to get the extra traction needed to make it up and over. No battle scars on the trails with the most difficult thing being me getting used to the size of the van and weight on the dirt. It’s definitely not like wheeling in my old Tacoma!

GEAR STORAGE AND ORGANIZATION: Adventure Wagon interior conversion kit, Adventure Wagon Moab bed, Adventure Wagon Mule over head bags, TruckVault custom drawer system, Front Runner Wolf packs, Pelican 50ST Cooler, Pelican Air Case

For trip planning, I search a lot on the Internet, forums, YouTube, and talk to others at local meet ups. My friend just told me about a GPS navigation app called Off-Road, which inspires me and gives me the confidence to go explore a lot more. I love the off-road community as everyone is so helpful and friendly and it’s truly a family-and friends-driven lifestyle. I’m planning to take my family and experience the Mojave trail for our first multi-day camping trip with the Sprinter and there’s a growing list of places to go and so much to see.

ELECTRONICS, COMMUNICATION, AND MOUNTS: Maxxfan Deluxe 7500 ventilation fan, Espar Diesel heater, Switch Pros custom mounted by Luxe CC, Adventure Wagon Dual battery tray
