EDITOR’S NOTES

I

t’s hard to believe that one year ago, life as we knew it completely changed. It’s been a challenging year for everyone - individuals and businesses alike. While we all adjusted to the “new normal,” some of us used that extra time at home to hone in on some personal projects, including a few builds. While many look to newer models for their fix, some prefer classic vehicles from yesteryears. It’s these vehicles that really impress, given the time and work needed to bring them back to their former glory and then some. Not to mention the patience and money required to find new parts and one-off fabrication to restore these classics into modern beauties. We’ve got quite a few old-school trucks for your viewing pleasure! Dalton Lovejoy and his fiance Maddie Heater made the most of it and wrenched on Maddie’s 1979 Jeep Cherokee Chief. As their first build as a couple, Dalton made sure to dress it up to her specifications and created a rig with total beach vibes. The duo made waves at the 2020 Jeep Beach last fall and have now found their new hobby as a couple. Victor Valdivia has made off-road parts his fulltime career as an employee of Transamerican

ISSUE 28

Auto Parts/4WP, so it’s only natural that he also builds his unique rides. His latest is a 1990 Chevy Suburban that’s reminiscent of his childhood, and a build that catches your attention thanks to its red Joker theme on the crisp white exterior. One of Victor’s main goals for the ‘Burban was for it to perform, and now he takes it everywhere - from off-road shows to camping trips. LFTD & LVLD veteran Calvin Chapleau is no stranger to these pages, and he did his fair amount of wrenching during the pandemic to create RYDin Old Skool v.2.0. The Cencal-style truck is a 1996 Ford F-350 that boasts all the fixings and more. With the style of the Ford’s body lines a favorite and a mission to create something different from the norm, he teamed up with RYD Motorsport to create the perfect frame and suspension for another elaborate and impressive build; that again raises the bar! Michael Loya’s “Wasted Wages” 1997 Ford F-250 7.3L is his first OBS truck build and first SEMA Show vehicle. Working with Truck Guru, aka Cris Payne, he made sure his dream truck was transformed into a head-turning and massive lifted truck. The result was the most intricate build he’s ever done and is now being used as a marketing tool for his business out in Texas.

For Robert Mcintosh, OBS trucks are a passion and he’s always been into old body Power Strokes. The first one he had was the same color as his latest build - a 1997 Ford F-250 that he’ll never sell. After locating a truck in reasonably good condition, he began fixing it up on his own in his driveway. To help market his tire shop, Carlos Cortez of Llantero Tire Service sought to create a show queen with his 1971 Chevy K10. It took a solid three months to dress up this K10, including a set of wheels he designed himself with the help of Intro Wheels. With a few additional modifications, Carlos didn’t want anything overthe-top and kept it simple to retain the classic look of the storied Chevy. As things slowly open up and life gets back on track, our favorite car and truck shows are back. In fact, the fan-favorite Lonestar Throwdown returned in February to celebrate its 10th anniversary. Check out our coverage on page 74! We hope these builds we’ve featured inspired you, and don’t be afraid to get your hands on a classic ride you’ve always wanted. With a bit of time and patience, you’ll be able to do the same! Enjoy Issue 28!

1979 JEEP CHEROKEE CHIEF

WE BOTH ALWAYS SAY THAT WE WANT SOMETHING NO ONE ELSE HAS AND THIS IS DEFINITELY THAT.” - MADDIE HEATER

D

alton Lovejoy and Maddie Heater are customization couple goals. The duo are fans of lifted trucks and enjoy tackling projects together. Dalton even proposed to Maddie at a Daytona Truck Meet, popping the big question at one of the biggest lifted truck shows in the country. They aren’t strangers to the custom truck scene, and Dalton has several builds under his belt, including his famous 1969 crew cab Dodge and 1963 GMC panel van. While Maddie has always just been along for the ride with Dalton’s past builds, for this 1979 Jeep Cherokee Chief, it was time for her to take the lead for her own project.

28

“Dalton has given me a passion and love for customizing,” she explains. “We both always say that we want something no one else has and this is definitely that. I have always been the shotgun rider, but we decided it was time for me to have something of my own to drive around.” Since Dalton usually builds a personal rig every year for Hostile Wheels’ booth at SEMA, he figured that Maddie would finally get her dream Jeep.

“I always said I wanted a Jeep or a Bronco and I finally got my Jeep,” Maddie admits. “I love trucks, but I gravitate towards Jeep more. We honestly weren’t looking for anything. But our friend found the Jeep Cherokee Chief for sale on Facebook Marketplace, and I was in love after seeing it.” For Maddie, the build could have gone one of two ways: either an off-road, “badass” monster or a beach rig. “The two themes obviously don’t go together, and I chose the beach rig because it’s something you don’t see every day.”

29

Once she chose the beach theme, she wanted to incorporate an aqua and copper color scheme, but Dalton wasn’t convinced it would look good. According to Maddie, they went to SEMA and saw another build with copper accents, which helped Dalton finally visualize the hue combo. With the color scheme and theme in place, it was time to get to work on Maddie’s dream ride. Since she loved the ruggedness of a Jeep and the droptop factor of the Bronco, they decided to cut off the top to get the best of both worlds. To add to the beach theme, Maddie also wanted to incorporate some tropical vibes to the Chief, which can be seen via palm tree leaves on various places on the Jeep, including the interior and frame. “Something significant to our bigger builds is a full custom-cut frame,” Dalton explains. “My fiancée had to design her tropical leaf frame three times for it to be perfect in every aspect, structurally and design-wise. We both had the idea of putting LEDs in the frame and trusses to really showcase the detailed work.” Dalton’s a diesel guy at heart, but Maddie felt an LS motor would fit the build better and went with that. She also chose the custom seat belts from Seatbelt Planet and all the accent colors. “I had the idea for the sound system and iPad dash, so we could hear the music over that loud motor.”

30

31

Usually, Dalton is known for favoring patina when it comes to his builds’ exterior, but Maddie wanted to go with actual paint. “Maddie pushed me out of my comfort zone with this one,” he laughs. As their first build with actual paint, finding someone to do the bodywork and paint was a time-consuming task that paid dividends in the end. While the project was a fun undertaking for both of them, it wasn’t without its challenges. Since they started building it at the beginning of the pandemic last year with Dudes Fab Shop, a lot of the parts were either delayed or postponed. After it was all said and done, they named it “The Wiki” and unveiled it at the Daytona Truck Meet where they also got engaged and took home their first “Best In Show” award. But taking a classic Jeep and truly customizing it does come with its share of haters. “At the end of the day, I build it for Maddie, so as long as she’s happy that’s all that matters. At the very least, the Jeep was saved and not rotting away to never be seen again.” Despite building a project with so much sentiment, the couple plans to sell “The Wiki” and move on to the next project as a duo and create other epic builds.

ichael Loya’s journey wouldn’t be possible without the introduction by his buddy Clayton Marx. Together, the two would wrench on vehicles, using the hobby as an artistic expression. Unfortunately, Clayton passed away two years ago and the hobby is now Michael’s way to still connect to his departed friend. “I have him to thank for starting this madness that now flows through my blood,” he casually laughs. “It was just a hobby we did together, and as we got older the builds just continued to get bigger and better with each vehicle.” Growing up in Texas, Michael also grew up being an avid outdoor enthusiast, so when he wasn’t busy fixing up trucks, he was either out hunting

36

or fishing, the 29-year-old admits. Today, he’s still a huge truck enthusiast, but with a bigger bank account (to fund his projects) as the owner of a meat market in Midland, Texas, called Tall City Meat Market. While his previous builds were fairly simple, Michael really stepped out of his comfort zone for his OBS truck build with a 1997 Ford F-250 as the base vehicle. It has been a lifelong dream of his to build a SEMA Show vehicle and felt this was the perfect time to finally go for it.

37

“This was my first build that was of this caliber,” he describes. “By that, I mean a full frame-off custom build to represent the sponsors that were directed my way by Cris Payne with Truck Guru. He reached out to me through mutual friends that knew I had the truck Cris was looking for.” For the base vehicle, it was a total coincidence that it was a Ford. “I really did not choose the vehicle, it chose me,” Michael explains. Once the green light was given by all parties involved, it was time to build something that was completely out of the ordinary. “I knew right from the start that it was going to be a build that would either be loved or hated. I wanted a big, lifted old school truck. Lowered trucks aren’t my style, but I still appreciate the hard work put into any build.” The specific look he had in mind for everything was to transform it from being old school to new school, given he feels it’s important that these trucks stay present in today’s modern world. “After all, they are the foundation of how today’s modern trucks look and function.” With Truck Guru as his main marketing director, Michael was introduced to a plethora of companies that would help make his vision a reality.

38

39

To get the truck the proper elevation, RYD in Ontario, Canada, was commissioned to build the suspension, which consists of 26” of lift with front and rear 4-link coil overs. The 26x16 Fittipaldi OffRoad wheels wrapped inside Interco TSL 44/18.50R26 tires set off its gigantic stance. They chose to keep the exterior mainly original, but with front and rear Fusion bumpers added along with a custom two-tone wrap by Avery Wraps. The suspension and frame were powder coated using Prismatic Powders, while MW Customs rock lights and MisSouth LED headlights and tail lights modernize the lighting of “Wasted Wages”.

For performance, the Ford features CTS programming, 62MM Turbo, a custom automatic transmission, front and rear 4.88 Yukon gears, and 5” MBRP exhaust for a serious growl. Inside sports a custom interior by Josh Upholstery in Midland, TX, while the JL Audio system provides showoff quality sounds. As Michael’s first SEMA build, he does admit feeling the pressure of the dreaded “SEMA crunch” all builders understand. “We built this truck from start to finish in one week, working with crews day and night - mostly done by Da Drop Shop in Midland, TX. As the most intricate build he’s ever done, Michael’s goal was to have the best OBS on the streets and the result was definitely what he got! “The reaction we received at SEMA 2019 is hard to describe,” he confesses. “Some loved it and others loved to hate it, which is exactly what I expected and initially wanted.” After the big show, the truck was primarily used as a marketing tool for his Tall City Meat Market, but Micheal is looking for its next owner as he looks to the future. “I already have a new project in mind and it’s going to be a 1991 Dodge W350 extended cab dually 4x4 5-speed build that will be unveiled at the SEMA Show later this year.”

1990 CHEVY SUBURBAN WORDS: KRISTIE REAL | PHOTOS: BRIAN McGEE

A

s an employee of Transamerican Auto Parts/4WP, Victor Valdivia has made off-road parts his career. When he’s not providing off-road enthusiasts exceptional service and extensive knowledge on aftermarket accessories, he’s busy creating his own automotive masterpieces. Automotive culture has always been in his blood. As a kid, he grew up with a dad and brothers that were all heavy into customizing their cars and trucks. “I was around everything from hot rod builds to Lowriders with custom paint jobs and everything in between,” he explains. “I remember working during summers with my dad at the body shop when I was like 11 years old. By the time I was 13, I was already doing full paint jobs on my own.” The first real project that he worked on himself was a 1955 Chevy step side pickup truck that his dad gave him and since then, he’s built about six of his own (not including the others he’s lent his expertise on). “I’ve been fortunate enough to have my hands on many big projects in the industry as well as building multiple vehicles for SEMA, too,” he explains. While he vividly recalls his past builds, it’s this Chevy Suburban that holds a special place on his list. He had a Suburban when he was younger, with a huge lift and big tires, and wanted to build a similar one. But this time, its goal was to blaze new trails and go off-roading (despite original intentions of making it into a daily driver). When he found a clean 1990 Suburban for sale, it was too good of a blank canvas to pass up.

45

“It was just going to be something I’d use for work and then on the weekends to go camping with the family, but after a few additions, it went completely south and turned into this crazy build,” he laughs. “I had envisioned something way cooler and something no one had seen when it came to these older trucks.” It’s a situation many builders find themselves in and once you hit that point, there’s no turning back!

When that decision was made, he linked up with his good friend at Atlas Spring for their 14” custom front and rear leaf springs and GRID Offroad for some 26x14 GF3s and continued to reach out to others for more and more parts to add for the Suburban. There was no plan set in action or real rendering. Instead, Victor just started with the suspension and axles and then just went a bit crazy with everything else. “I just chose the mods and accessories as I went along with the build, honestly.” Calling it “Why So Serious?” for its Joker theme, it went perfectly with his non- nonchalant attitude towards customizing which is a big contrast to other builds that are meticulously planned and executed.

46

The exterior sports custom front and rear bumpers as well as a tire carrier, while recovery includes a Smittybilt winch with Monster Hooks shackles out front and back. Lighting consists of Seward Off-Road accessories like four of their 50” light bars and LED headlamps. For accessories, Victor went with AMP Research steps, Fab Fours roof rack, dual Smittybilt air tanks, and their tracks.

The rest of the build was a breeze, and he was lucky that no real big challenges came up. “The only issue I had was trying to get the T4 Turbo setup working correctly,” Victor details. “In comparison to other big trucks that I’ve done, this one outweighs them all by a lot!” When it was all said and done, the Suburban was unveiled at the Pomona Off-Road Expo to admiring eyes who liked the Joker motif and eye-catching red wheels. “Everything I put into this beast was meant to perform. I take it everywhere – camping, off-road shows, you name it!”

hen it comes to truck trends, nothing is probably more polarizing than the Cencal style. For those who aren’t familiar with this style, Cencals are trucks with a huge lift, big wheels and lower profile tires. The trucks usually feature powder-coated or chromed suspension components and some sagging out back. They’re purpose-built for the street and shows. Haters can’t get over the small tires and big wheels combo, while others criticize the older body style of trucks used. The trend originated in Central California, hence the Cencal name, and has slowly trickled out to the rest of the nation. While it’s either a love it or hate it look, for Canadian Calvin Chapleau, it’s absolute love, and his recent build – a 1996 Ford F-350 – proves it. “The OBS (Old Body Style) scene has become more popular as the years go on,” he admits. “I feel it will continue to grow, and it’s not going to die out any time soon.” According to Calvin, it’s busier as he’s messaged daily with interest in the old school trucks (junks, as some would say). “My builds have been inspiring to many, and people have become very motivated to build more old school vehicles.”

53

Besides his own builds as inspo, Calvin attributes social media and the Internet for the spike in interest in the scene. “The older trucks draw more interest than newer vehicles.” He also notes that more and more enthusiasts are interested in the OBS game since the vehicles look so different from what’s currently out there, adding how everything else that’s out there is “boring and the same.” Since the last time we touched base with Calvin (LFTD & LVLD Issue 15), he’s been busy grinding and pushing out more Cencal OBS projects – here and in Canada. “Teaming up with TIS wheels and Dropstars wheels have been a big part of my game since 2016.” For this current Ford F-350 build, he wanted something that would always be popular no matter “how long the game continues and changes.” For him, the truck is the “OG of custom frames, and he’s had a vision of the build in his head ever since he was a kid. Just recently, he felt compelled to turn that dream into reality. “This style of truck and its body lines are two of my very favorites,” he describes. “I wanted something that would be different than the ones I have witnessed at other shows.” Because this build was so unique, he needed the best and searched for companies that would fit his original vision. He also teamed up with RYD Motorsports to create a game plan for the oneoff frame and fully fabricated 24” suspension.

54

Cencal trucks are elaborate AF, and this one is no different. You name it, and this truck has undergone it – from polishing and finishing to powder coating and everything in between. The white with red accents was perfected by Kap Collision (Kapuskasing, Ontario, Canada) and meant to be simple and subtle with just a dash of flash. Adorning the truck are BAMFled Off Road Lighting accessories and Outlaw LEDs. Accessories include Hornblasters, four XS Power Batteries, and a Boost Bars grille, to name a few. Performance is just as important as looks for Calvin, so he added a custom-built transmission, K&N intake, MBRP exhaust, and SCT Programmer with a custom tune for added power. Inside, he went with RoadWire leather interiors and a Rockford Fosgate audio system.

55

A build of this caliber is usually not without a few challenges, but Calvin got lucky. He noted that the companies he chose to work with were on top of everything and were able to provide him with exactly what was needed and on time. “This made the process so much easier and less stressful for me.” According to Calvin, this build is on a whole other level for him. “Everything on the truck was either custom-built or bought brand new. I feel it far exceeds my expectations. It will be difficult to top this build.” But like the true customizer he is, he’ll use this build as motivation to go bigger and better with whatever is next! “I’ll continue to build in the same category, but with a twist to be different from the others. As he currently basks in the glory of building one of his dream rigs, he’s already working on what’s next. “I don’t want to say too much, but we are coming in red hot with our 1992 Dodge Cummins soon!”

henever you go into a customization project of any magnitude, you first have to stop and ask yourself what you want out of the build. After all, you’re putting a lot of time, money and effort to take an ordinary vehicle and transform it into something more. Carlos Cortez of Llantero Tire Service in El Monte, CA, knew right from the start his truck needed to be a show queen. And by a show queen, he meant something that was unique and head-turning – a build that would impress at shows and on the streets. With a special interest in customizing old school trucks, he knew it needed to be a classic, but still cool in modern times and not something that’s been done before. After searching for the right base vehicle, he opted for the classic Chevy K10. “I wanted to be one of the first ones to build one,” he admits, opting for a red color scheme that would impress and showcase his favorite color. “My initial vision was pretty simple. I just wanted the truck to have a big lift and big, wide wheels, and the final product was exactly what I initially wanted.”

61

Since he has his own shop, Carlos already knew who’s who in the aftermarket accessory market and knew what products and additions were needed for the K10 build. “Intro wheels is one of the main companies I sell wheels for at my shop.” But he didn’t get to just choose from one of their many unique wheel designs and actually got to design his own. “I personally went to Intro and took them a couple of ideas that I had in mind. Then we came up with my final wheel design.” Other additions to the K10 truck include a 385 Stroker Crate motor, 37x13.50R26 RBP Repulsor tires, and a 9” front, 6” rear Superlift suspension with Fox Shocks. Other than that, Carlos didn’t want to get too crazy and wanted to keep the classic look of the truck as original as possible. After three months of solid focus on the Chevy, it was all dressed up to his specifications and debuted at the California Truck Invasion in San Bernardino, CA. “I felt the response was good,” he admits when asked what the reaction was to his truck. “I had my own booth there for the shop and it drew in a lot of people who wanted to check out the Chevy. I couldn’t be happier with how it all turned out.”

f you’re not a true custom car fan at heart, you’d probably look at a highly customized ride and think it’s simply a waste of funds. While that may be true to outsiders, for the die-hard fans of this automotive culture, a custom truck is a piece of rolling art that the owner enjoys and gets to share with others at shows or cruising on the streets. Nobody knows this better than Robert Mcintosh, owner of a rebuilt single cab Ford truck that’s a modern throwback with its massive suspension and meticulous details. Robert is a union boilermaker by trade, but an OBS builder by hobby. Just check out his Instagram page (@rob_mac_ ) for a brief history lesson on his passion for late-model Ford trucks. “I’ve always been into old body Power Strokes,” he admits. “The first one I bought was the same color as this one. If it has a motor, I’m ‘bout it,” admitting that he’s lost track as to how many he’s built over the years. Robert, of course, needed to keep this one “old school” and began wrenching on it in his driveway with very little help.

“I wanted it to look like it was built in 1997, so staying on leaf springs was the goal,” he explains. Robert found the truck in fairly good condition, but it wasn’t without a few snags. When he first bought it, it had a motor thud that was cracking back through the intake. It turns out, someone swapped a rocker arm ball out of a 6.0 and it wasn’t letting the valve open up all the way. To remedy this problem, Robert pulled the motor and built it from top to bottom to his spec. The F-250 turned heads at the 2021 Lone Star Throwdown in Conroe, TX, and now continues to be a social media star. Because of its sentimental value, Robert knows one thing is for sure - that he’s never selling it. “I’m too attached to it because it reminds me of my first regular cab old body truck that was the exact same color scheme.”

LONESTAR THROWDOWN 2021

C

ovid might have put a pause on 2020, but 2021 is coming back to life! While many of us spent those quarantine days dreaming of when life would resume or go back to normal, others were taking advantage of that extra time to wrench on their rides and perfect them for the biggest truck gathering of the year - the 2021 Lonestar Throwdown.

Aside from being one of the first outdoor shows since the pandemic hit, the LST 2021 was special for another reason as it was their 10 year anniversary, which is quite an accomplishment! Held in the city of Conroe, TX, (just outside of Houston) at the Lone Star Expo Center, the show is considered as the start of the custom truck show season and does not disappoint in terms of eye candy and more. While builders love featuring their blood, sweat, and tears, enthusiasts love feasting their eyes on some of the hottest new custom trucks, Jeeps and SUVs on the scene. The 2021 Lonestar Throwdown didn’t disappoint and showed how much pent up enthusiasm there is for the show scene. It was a great kickoff to the 2021 event season and a good indicator of what’s to come. Next stop Daytona Truck Meet! 72
